Khan, Areeg Ismail Ahmed Abdulla. "Novel translational strategies to treat cardiac injury and dysfunction." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2014. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/8445.

Abstract:
There is ample evidence of the crucial role of PI3K/Akt dependent signalling in cardiac function, cellular growth and cell apoptosis. The PI3K/Akt pathway mediates cardioprotective effects in experimental models of cardiovascular disease. For example, activation of this pathway ameliorates the sepsis-induced cardiac dysfunction, whereas its activation in myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) limits cardiac injury. This thesis investigates the role of two drugs, which activate the PI3K/Aktpathway, namely the haematopoietic cytokine erythropoietin and the anti-malarial drug artesunate, in a mouse animal model of experimental sepsis-induced cardiac dysfunction and in a rat model of regional myocardial I/R injury, respectively. Using a clinically relevant model of caecal ligation and puncture in mice, I demonstrated that aged (8 months) C57BL/6 mice (receiving fluid resuscitation and antibiotic therapy) developed significant cardiac dysfunction (within 24 h), while younger mice (2 months) did not. Erythropoietin attenuated the impaired systolic contractility (in vivo and ex vivo) caused by endotoxaemia (lipopolysacchride 9 mg kg-1; young mice) and sepsis (aged mice). These beneficial effects were associated with activation of Akt and endothelial nitric oxide synthase survival pathways and inhibition of the glycogen synthase kinase 3β, nuclear factor-κB and interleukin 1β pro-inflammatory pathways, secondary to activation of the β-common receptor. A single bolus administration of artesunate at the start of reperfusion in a rat model of myocardial I/R significantly attenuated the infarct size. This effect was mediated via activation of pro-survival pathways (PI3K/Akt and ERK 1/2 and STAT-3) and inhibition of the glycogen synthase kinase 3β and nuclear factor-κB pro-inflammatory pathways. Thus, in this thesis I have demonstrated that pharmacological activation of the PI3K/Akt pathway by erythropoietin and artesunate in sepsis and myocardial I/R, respectively, plays a vital role in the amelioration of cardiac dysfunction and injury.

Quinn, Bridget A. "Novel Therapeutic Strategies for Pancreatic Cancer." VCU Scholars Compass, 2014. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/4671.

Full text
Abstract:
Pancreatic cancer is a devastating disease that leaves patients with a very poor prognosis and few therapeutic options. Many of the treatment options available are the same that have been used for almost 2 decades. There is a dire need for both novel treatments for this disease as well as novel strategies of treatment. This body of work will introduce and provide evidence in support of a novel combination therapy for pancreatic cancer treatment, a novel strategy of modifying currently used chemotherapeutics for pancreatic cancer therapy, and a novel transgenic preclinical mouse model of pancreatic cancer. Sabutoclax, an antagonist of the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 proteins, and Minocycline, a commonly used antibiotic, show potent synergy when used in combination in both pancreatic cancer cells and in multiple immune-deficient and immune-competent mouse models of pancreatic cancer. Sabutoclax alone is capable of inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in cells and its cytotoxicity is enhanced significantly when combined with Minocycline. This combination results in the loss of Stat3 activation both in vitro and in vivo, which is essential for its toxicity. It also inhibits tumor growth and prolongs survival in the KPC transgenic mouse model of pancreatic cancer. Also presented here are studies that demonstrate efficacy in vivo of modified versions of Gemcitabine and Paclitaxel. These drugs are linked to a peptide that shows specificity for the EphA2 receptor, which is overexpressed on the surface of pancreatic cancer cells and only minimally on normal cells. This peptide results in increased cellular uptake of drug, as it is bypassing its normal mechanism of entry. These normal mechanisms are often dysregulated in cancer, leading to decreased uptake and drug resistance. The use of these modified drugs show significantly increased tumor growth inhibition as compared to the parent drug alone. Finally, we provide data on the characterization of a novel transgenic mouse model of pancreatic cancer. This model, the Pan Met View (PMV) mouse, combines the commonly used KPC transgenic mouse model of pancreatic cancer and a mouse that expresses a Luciferase reporter gene under the control of the cancer-specific promoter, CCN1. Our data shows that double transgenic PMV mice can now be used to follow primary tumor and metastasis development in real time by Bioluminescent imaging (BLI) through disease progression and potentially therapy. This strategy will enhance the use of genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMS) to study cancer initiation and progression with potential to non-invasively monitor therapy. These chapters present novel and exciting data that have the potential to open multiple avenues of translational study and result in significant advances in pancreatic cancer therapy.

Huang, Riliu. "A Skopos theory-based Study of Translation Strategies of Traditional Chinese Medicine Terms: A Case Study of Shāng Hán Lùn." Thesis, University of Sydney, 2020. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/23027.

Full text
Abstract:
After thousands of years of medical practice, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has developed into a unique medical theoretical system. As a result of the deepening exchanges between China and foreign countries and the extensive spread of TCM therapies and health culture, an increasing number of people are longing to develop a deeper understanding of TCM. TCM is imbued with Chinese cultural and historical elements, and its nomenclature and treatment methods are very different from Western medicine. Due to the lack of systematic theoretical guidance, translators resort to varying translation strategies, leading to inconsistency and confusion in TCM terminology translation. Therefore, in TCM terminology translation, special effort should be made to ensure target readers can comprehend the medical utility and meaning of TCM terms under the condition that the cultural connotations contained therein are well preserved. Skopos theory enables translators to consider purposes of translation, cultural environment, and feelings of target readers, breaking through the language paradigm in translation. By referring to Skopos theory and TCM translation principles, this study aims to develop a target-reader oriented TCM terminology translation method and concludes that translation methods and strategies can be flexibly selected according to the purposes of translation. To ensure the accuracy of TCM terminology translation and facilitate the acceptance and understanding of target readers, a domestication translation strategy is recommended for TCM terms that have counterparts in Western medicine; and for those that contain unique Chinese medical ideas or traditional Chinese cultural concepts and philosophical thoughts, a foreignization translation strategy should be adopted to retain their underlying cultural uniqueness.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis has been to analyze German light verb constructions with the light verb leisten and their translations into Swedish. From the identified types containing a nominalization + leisten as parts of a light verb construction, three construction types were examined more closely, namely Beitrag leisten, Arbeit leisten and Hilfe leisten. These light verb constructions showed a higher representation in the material and were hence selected for a further in-depth study. As for the translations into Swedish, three main translation strategies were identified: word-for-word translations, full-verb replacements, and paraphrases/omissions.  The results show that paraphrasing is the preferred strategy, although the result is quite even between all the strategies. The results also show that each of the three constructions preferred one each of the three translation strategies, which opens for further studies in this area. One explanation for this is, relating to the semantic meaning of the nouns and to their flexible characteristics into Swedish, that nouns with a narrower semantic meaning are more inclined to be translated word-for-word, but also depending on whether the nominalization has a function as a direct object in the sentence, is modified by an adjective, or is merely part of a predicative.

Sanders, Eric Jay. "A Comparative Analysis of the Roles, Strategies and Tactics Used by Scholar-Practitioners in Organization Development and Medical Translational Research to Simultaneously Create Research Knowledge and Help Clients Achieve Results." Abstract:

This is a grounded theory study of how scholar-practitioners simultaneously help clients generate results and create new knowledge. Through a set of 41 interviews, it examines the roles of scholar-practitioners in organization development and medical translational research, compares the strategies and tactics they use in each field, and considers how they renew themselves professionally and personally. It shows how these professionals perform varying combinations of three roles: research, teaching and applied field work. They have developed different work habits, ways of thinking and even ways of being than their colleagues who focus on just one of those areas in either field, and have a set of personal characteristics including being agile/adaptive, collaborative, holistic, passionate and wise, which empower their use of self in helping their clients or patients. It shows how strategies and tactics are employed in the translation of theory to practice and vice versa, which had not been done previously, and develops a new Knowledge-Results Circular Flow Model to connect all the aspects of their work with their clients to generate client-determined results and new knowledge in an ongoing iterative process. Last, but not least, it shows that scholar-practitioners in these two fields are much more similar than different, and can learn from each other to strengthen both the knowledge they generate via their research, and the client/patient results that are the focus of their work.

Abstract:
Recently, the tendencies in the translation science have changed and the interest has been shifted towards the empirical investigations of the process of the translation. A wide span of research works was enhanced by the belief that the processes, which take place in the translator’s head while he or she is translating, are as important as the perception of translation as the final product of the translated text in relation to the source text. The translated text can provide a comparably incomplete and misleading assumptions about the process of translation, i. e. ignoring and eliminating both problems and successful strategies of the translation. Insofar as it is not possible to directly observe the human mind at work, a number of attempts have been made at indirectly accessing the translator’s mind. One such attempt, which has been steadily gaining ground in translation research, has been to ask the translators themselves to reveal their mental processes in real time while carrying out a translation task. Such a method of data collection is known as ‘thinking aloud’. Starting from 1980 Think Aloud Protocols (TAPs) have become a major instrument in process-oriented translation studies. The major early concern of researchers was the analysis of translation strategies using TAPs. Translation strategies range from a subject’s realization of a translation problem to its solution or to the subject’s realization of its insolubility for him or her. In this research, the... Abstract:
The following product–oriented study deals with translational norms operating in indirect translation of Hebrew literature into Swedish. The research was conducted as a contrastive study of Extra–linguistic Cultural References (ECR) based on Toury’s (1995/2012) coupled pairs and supplemented with Pedersen’s typology (2011). The material consisted of 3 x 136 coupled pairs excerpted from a collection of short stories written by an Israeli high–prestige writer Amos Oz and translated into Swedish through English. Both translations were carried out by high–prestige translators. The results suggest that indirect literary translation follows the adequacy norm in accordance with the hypothesis on high–prestige translation (Lindqvist 2002). The hypothesis on acceptancy norms operating in indirect translation is rejected.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses the use of symbolic elements and metaphors in Edith Wharton’s novel Ethan Forme and analyzes the problems related to rendering them into Lithuanian. Edith Wharton (1862-1937) is a famous turn of the century American writer whose works describe the life of the American nation in the period between the end of the Civil War and the beginning of the First World War. Ethan Frome (1911) describes a poor farmer of New-England village whose marital entrapment and desperate love for his wife’s cousin Mattie eventually lead him to committing suicide which does not kill him but leaves him crippled for the whole life. The study is based on the following two translation theories: the theory suggested by Hasan Ghazala (2003) which is applied to the analysis of translation of metaphors in the novel, and the theory designed by Jean Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet (1958) used in the analysis of translation of symbols. The present thesis is divided into five main parts and has one appendix. Part one introduces the main topic and aims, provides the main biographical facts about the author and critical view on the novel. Part two presents the socio-historical and biographical context for Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome. Part three reveals the issues of theoretical background and theoretical approaches to the main concepts of a symbol and metaphor. Here, the working definition of symbol is provided referring to Edgar V. Roberts and Henry E. Jacobs (1989), Clarence Hugh Holman (198... [to full text]
Priede pateikiama romano „Itenas Fromas“ siužeto santrauka.

Abstract:
Translation process of fiction is a complex activity. In order to get a translated product with the same effect and value as of the original different competences of a translator are necessary, including intercultural awareness. Different cultures have different experiences of life. Therefore, whenever a cultural gap appears a translator has to decide how to deal with it while translating. The study seeks to answer what possible ways for translating CSIs exist and which of them were applied while translating the novel “The World According to Garp” by John Irving.
Grožinės literatūros vertimas – sudėtingas procesas. Tam, kad vertimas atitiktų originalo vertę, vertėjui būtinas tarpkultūrinis sąmoningumas. Skirtingos kultūros turi skirtingą gyvenimo patirtį. Todėl vertėjas turi nuspręsti kaip elgtis esant kultūriniam atotrūkiui. Darbe aptariama kultūrinių realijų samprata bei analizuojamos vertimo strategijos, taikytos verčiant Džono Irvingo romaną „Pasaulis pagal Garpą”.

Abstract:
The Master of Arts thesis “Translation of Culture-Specific Drink and Food Items in “Blackberry Wine” by Joanne Harris” presents the analysis of translation strategies applied in translating cultural realia, namely drink and food references in Milda Dyke’s Lithuanian translation of "Blackberry Wine", as well as a short analysis of the translation strategies and their function. The consideration of different translation strategies that were proposed by prominent scholars, such as Mona Baker (1992), Javier-Franco Aixelá and Eirlys E.Davies (2003) in translation studies, and the analysis of the strategies employed by the translator Milda Dyke translating the novel "Blackberry Wine" into Lithuanian are discussed in this thesis. Theoretical aspects are applied in the analytical part, taking into account the most frequent strategies employed for the translation of culture-specific drink and food entities by the translator and the comment on these choices exhibits peculiar cultural aspects. Futhermore, the ways how to handle problems related to the translation of culture-specific drink and food items from English into Lithuanian are analyzed and presented in the analytical part. This paper investigates the two major groups of cultural references, specifically the names of food and drink items, which frequently cause rather complex and sometimes controversial issues while translating literary works. The translation of culture-specific drink and food entities involve the employment of... [to full text]
Be to, analizuojama vertėjos Mildos Dyke vartojamos vertimo strategijos į lietuvių kalbą. Teoriniai aspektai analizuojami praktinėje darbo dalyje, atsižvelgiant į dažniausiai vartojamų vertimo strategijų pritaikymą verčiant kultūrinius gėrimų ir valgių pavadinimus bei pastarųjų būdingas savybes verčiant į tikslinę kalbą. Praktinėje dalyje pateikiami vertimo sunkumai ir jų sprendimo būdai pritaikyti verčiant kultūrines realijas. Abstract:
The Master Thesis “Translation Strategies Used in Translating Tess Gerritsen’s Medical Thrillers: Paulina Kruglinskienė’s Translation of the Novel The Surgeon and Jonas Čeponis’ Translation of the Novel Life Support” analyses two novels written by Tess Gerritsen (The Surgeon and Life Support) and their Lithuanian translations by Paulina Kruglinskienė and Jonas Čeponis. The following hypothesis was raised: translation by using an equivalent item and low localization strategy are the most popular and useful translation strategies in translating medical terminology. The aim of this paper is to find out what translation strategies are the most popular while translating medical terminology in Paulina Kruglinskienė’s and Jonas Čeponis’ translations of Tess Gerritsen’s medical thrillers. These particular translators were chosen for this analysis due to the following reasons: they are the main translators of Tess Gerritsen’s novels into the Lithuanian language (both have transated six novels each), what is more, they both have medical background as well as long experience in translation. The purpose of this paper is to find out whether Paulina Kruglinskienė and Jonas Čeponis use similar translation strategies while translating medical terms into the Lithuanian language and how these strategies influence the quality of translation. The theoretical part analyses various aspects related with the translation of Tess Gerritsen’s medical thrillers: genre theory, features of thriller... [to full text]
The aim of this thesis is to compare two Lithuanian translations of A Clockwork Orange in respect of its main stylistic component the Russian “Nadsat”, to examine the intercultural translation problems arising in this translation and strategies invoked by the translators, and make decisions about the quality of the target texts. To reach this aim, descriptive and comparative methods as well as quantitative analysis are applied. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the cultural aspect in translation and translators’ role in dealing with intercultural translation problems. Further, it discusses macro and micro approach to translation, i.e. various strategies for solving intercultural translation problems, giving most attention to borrowings and slang and the difficulties they pose in translation. Moreover, softening and compensation are also presented as the most effective strategies for solving such problems. The analysis begins with the discussion of macro and micro level of problems arising in the “Nadsat” translation. Then, the strategies used by the translators are examined on the grounds of the foreignization and domestication strategies (Venuti), seven micro strategies suggested by Davies, and softening and compensation. The analysis also includes a comparison of quantity and density of borrowings and slang in the ST, TT1 and TT2 as well as of softening and compensation. Moreover, the appendices (A, B and C) include glossaries of borrowings and slang from all... [to full text]
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South African author Linda Rode‘s book In die Nimmer-Immer Bos (2009a) and Elsa Silke‘s English translation thereof In the Never-Ever Wood (2009b) have won a number of prizes in South Africa, which is evidence both of the quality of the anthology and its translation, as well as of the continued significance of the folktale genre in today‘s fast-paced, modern society. People continue to make sense of the world through telling stories and, although the stories told today might be marked by life in the 21st century, our ancestors‘ stories are still appreciated by many. Although Rode‘s tales are not unlike other folktales, her collection differs in that it is a mosaic of cultures and their folklore spanning the globe, a book that appeals to the whole family, and to young readers and listeners in particular. Through a practical translation into German of selected tales from Silke‘s English version of Rode‘s book, the present thesis investigates ways and means of translating folktales for children. A functional approach was suggested, taking into account the European audience as well as the original intention of the author. As such, the author‘s style was naturalised and an attempt was made to replicate it in the target language, whereas culture-specific items relevant to the setting of the individual tales were retained. Hans J. Vermeer‘s skopos theory, as enhanced by Christiane Nord, as well as Lawrence Venuti‘s concepts of foreignisation and domestication were discussed, amongst other relevant theories. Many of the challenges discussed in the annotations to the practical translation typically occur in the translation of literature for children, and the study thus hopes to make a contribution to research on the translation of literature for children. Interviews conducted for the purpose of the present study furthermore proved the positive impact of good cooperation between the people involved in a translation project on the final translation product. The resulting translation, meant to impart knowledge and pleasure to the audience, furthermore serves as a translation sample that is intended to entice German publishers to commission a translation of Rode‘s anthology for the German book market.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the Lithuanian translations of English noun phrases in the popular journalism magazine ''Business & Exhibitions''. The corpus of data of noun phrases was collected from the articles found in seven issues of the magazine published in 2006 and 2007. The analysis is based on the definitions of translation strategies put forward by by Eirlys E. Davies. The aim of the study is to find the most common noun phrase types and translation strategies used for their rendering into Lithuanian in order to test the hypothesis that noun phrases can be used as a device to manipulate the audience that reads articles in magazines of popular journalism. Tables and figures presented in the thesis show the frequency of noun phrases and the employed translation strategies in percent. The interpretation of the statistics allows us to test the validity of the hypothesis.
Šis darbas nagrinėja angliškų daiktavardžių grupių vertimą į lietuvių kalbą populiariosios spaudos žurnale „Verslas ir parodos“. Daiktavardžių grupėms surinkti iš verslo žurnalo straipsnių buvo išanalizuoti septyni žurnalo numeriai, publikuoti 2006 - 2007 metais. Vertimo strategijų analizė pagrįsta Eirlys E. Davies pasiūlytų apibrėžimų pagrindu. Šios analizės tikslas – surasti labiausiai paplitusias tam tikros sintaksinės struktūros daiktavardžių grupes ir joms versti naudojamas vertimo strategijas, kad būtų patikrinta hipotezė, jog tam tikra daiktavardžių grupės struktūra gali būti naudojama kaip populiariosios spaudos skaitytojų manipuliacinė priemonė. Lentelės bei grafikai, vaizduojantys daiktavardžių grupių ir vertimo strategijų vartosenos dažnumą procentais, parodo tikrinamos hipotezės rezultatus.

Abstract:
Research within translation characterises cultural references as being problematic for translators, meaning they must choose between different translation strategies as to how to transfer these references into the translated text. These strategies are often described in general terms according to how closely oriented they are to the target-culture or source-culture, known as domestication or foreignisation. Translation of literature into English is minimal in world terms and there is seemingly a lack of statistically comparable data concerning the translation of cultural references. This study investigates and compares translation strategies of words denoting cultural references in two translations of the 1998 Swedish Nordic Noir novel Sprängaren by Liza Marklund. The methodology in the study is based on descriptive translation studies, and a categorisation model for types of cultural references is used, as well as an adapted taxonomy model for evaluating translation strategies. Issues addressed are: what types of strategies are used; whether strategies change between translations; how the second translation stands in relation to the retranslation hypothesis and whether any general translation norms are apparent. Results show that a wide variety of translation strategies are used for different types of cultural references, with subtle differences in strategies used in each translation. However, both translations appear to be more domestication-oriented with little overall movement towards to the source culture, as the retranslation hypothesis suggests.

Abstract:
The aim of this MA thesis is to analyze culture-specific items and their translation strategies in Vytautas Petrukaitis‘ Lithuanian translation of Mario Puzo’s famous novel The Godfather (1969) and in Lithuanian subtitles of the film The Godfather (1972) directed by Francis Ford Coppola. In 1969 Vytautas Petrukaitis translated Puzo’s novel The Godfather into the Lithuanian language; in 2009 Coppola’s film with Lithuanian subtitles appeared on Lithuanian screen and in DVD. Both the novel The Godfather and the subtitles of the film The Godfather include a large number of culture-specific items. The analysis of culture-specific items follows the categorization of culture-specific items suggested by Jurgita Mikutytė; the discussion of translation strategies applied in translation of culture-specific items from English into Lithuanian is based on the classification of translation strategies as proposed by Eirlys E. Davies. The thesis is comprised of the introduction, four sections, the conclusion, two appendices, and a list of references. Part One introduces the subject of culture-specific items and presents their classification and translation strategies. Part Two of the paper discusses the aspects of audiovisual translation and its two main forms; namely, dubbing and subtitling. Part Three is devoted to the issue of adaptation; thus, the relationship between two different mediums, literature and film, is discussed. Part Four, which is composed of two sub-sections, analyses... [to full text]
Pirmasis poskyris analizuoja kultūrines realijas romane, o antrasis poskyris – filmo subtitruose. Abstract:
This study analyses translation strategies applied for translation of cultural realia. Besides, the problems of cultural 'vulnerability' and preservation of cultural identity are emphasized. Therefore, the concepts of culture and cultural identity are defined. Analysing translation strategies applied for translation of Lithuanian cultural realia two translations of Kristijonas Donelaitis' "Metai" ("The Seasons") are contrasted, juxtoposing the examples of cultural realia. The results of the analysis reveal that the strategies of generalisation and description/explanation are employed for the translation of the majority of cultural realia. The most suitable translation strategies for cultural realia should be determined by a variety of factors: the type of the text, the type of realia, its significance in the context, the degree of acceptance of unusual collocations in receiving culture, the model reader and his/her world knowledge, and desired effect.

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this essay was to examine what methods might be used in translation from English to Swedish of two informative newspaper articles about current events, which took place in 2010 and 2011, viz. the publishing of secret documents on the Internet by JulianAssange and WikiLeaks. The study is based on Lakoff and Johnson’s theories on metaphorical concepts, presented in their work Metaphors We Live By (1980/2003), and the focus of the translation study is on metaphors and metonomy. The texts contain a large number of metaphors. Almost 100 of those have been listed in an Appendix, attached to this paper, and a great many of these metaphors were analysed. The special metaphor types of metonomy and personification were studied separately, as well as together with the rest of the metaphors. The theoretical model used was Vinay and Darbelnet’s theories of direct and oblique translation, comprising the following seven strategies: literal translation, borrowing, calque, transposition, modulation, equivalence and adaptation. Other theorists, whose professional expertise and experience proved useful in this work, were Munday, Newmark and Ingo. Parallel texts, monolingual dictionaries and the Internet were also most valuable in the translation process. Choosing the appropriate and correct vocabulary and expression in the target language was not always an easy task, and certain words and passages translated were revised on several occasions. As for the translation strategies used, equivalence was the most interesting one, and transposition should perhaps have been used to a larger extent. Literal translation was probably used most of them all.

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is the translation strategies used to translate culture specific items in the Lithuanian and English versions of Peter Mayle’s book A Year in Provence. Peter Mayle (b. 1939) is a famous British author, known for his educational books for children and travel writing. A Year in Provence is a book about a British couple who decides to settle in a small village of Ménerbes in France. New people and places offer many adventures while trying to know better the French culture and cuisine. The Lithuanian translation of the book was done by the translator Ina Jakaitė (2008). At first, this thesis analyses the concept of cultural adaptation and explanations of the concept of the culture itself. Translation strategies for culture specific items (CSIs) are also discussed in the present paper. Furthermore, some methods of the translation by different scholars are introduced. Translation strategies for culture specific items in the paper are proposed and discussed according to the approach discussed by the famous scholar Eirlys E. Davies. Translation strategies (preservation, addition, omission, globalization, localization, transformation and creation) are used in analyzing and discussing the translation of proper nouns and food items in the book A Year in Provence. The section of proper names is divided into two categories: proper names ( the first names and surnames) and geographical names (names of cities, names of towns, names of streets, names of cafés and... Abstract:
This thesis analyses the translation strategies for culture-specific items (CSIs) in the translations by four different Lithuanian translators of four British and Canadian novels for young people, "Alone at Ninety Foot" (2001) by Katherine Holubitsky, "Hit and Run" (2003) by Norah McClintock, "Double Act" (1996) by Jacqueline Wilson and "The Borrowers" (1952) by Mary Norton. All these novels have a great variety of culture-specific items, often reflecting the lives of children and adolescents and issues that are important to them. The analysis of translation of culture-specific items is based on the strategies suggested by Eirlys E. Davies, while the categories of culture-specific items that are chosen for deeper discussion are those of a higher importance for the characters or themes of the novel. Statistical analysis of the strategies helps to form a clearer picture of the strategic choices preferred by each of the four Lithuanian translators. The present work is divided into five sections and has two appendices. Section One introduces the purpose of the work and provides some information about the object of analysis: the translation of cultural references in four British and Canadian novels for young people. Section Two explains the terminology used for the analysis of the translation of culture-specific items. Section Three is divided into eight sub-sections: 3.1, 3.3, 3.5 and 3.7 discuss the importance of some categories of culture-specific items in each novel, while... [to full text]

The present study conducted to investigate the different strategies applied by two Japanese translators translating H.P. Lovecraft's neologisms. The neologisms for the study were collected from Clore's (2009) lexicon and analysed based on Newmark's (1988) twelve types of neologisms. Each neologism was then compared to its Japanese equivalent found in the Japanese translations of Lovecraft's collective work. The neologisms were analysed and categorised based on Newmark's (1988) eleven proposed strategies. Seven of Newmark’s (1988) eleven strategies were found and "Naturalisation" was the most frequently applied strategy.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the way in which characters’ speech in the well-known American writer Katherine Paterson’s two novels for children, The Great Gilly Hopkins (1978) and The Same Stuff as Stars (2002), is translated by Romualda Zagorskienė and Renata Valotkienė, respectively in 1989 and 2005. The aim of this analysis is to consider and compare how Zagorskienė and Valotkienė deal with lexico-grammatical features that are hard to translate: grammatically deviant forms, colloquial forms, dialect and, especially, kinds of vocabulary that mark each character’s sociolect, such as the use of swearwords or name-calling. Further, the thesis looks at the effects of the strategies they choose on the presentation of characters and their relationships in the novels. The hypothesis that a number of lexico-grammatical features of characters’ speech will be standardized in translation has been raised, as this is suggested by current theoretical and practical research in translation studies. Thus, at first several relevant theoretical issues, based in particular on Gillian Lane-Mercier and Tiina Puurtinen’s theoretical research on the translation of tenor in fictional dialogues and literary sociolects, as well as what are known as the universals of translation are presented. In the thesis, the analysis of Zagorskienė and Valotkienė’s strategies is divided into two major parts. First, in Section 3, a detailed analysis of Zagorskienė and Valotkienė’s strategies for translating swearwords... [to full text]
Šiame darbe nagrinėjamos veikėjų kalbos vertimo strategijos įžymios amerikiečių rašytojos Ketrinos Paterson knygų vaikams „Smarkuolė Gilė Hopkins“ (The Great Gilly Hopkins, 1978 m.) ir „Kaip ir žvaigždės“ (The Same Stuff as Stars, 2002 m.) lietuviškuose vertimuose. „Smarkuolę Gilę Hopkins“ 1989 m. į lietuvių kalbą išvertė vertėja Romualda Zagorskienė, o „Kaip ir žvaigždes“ – 2005 m. vertėja Renata Valotkienė. Darbo tikslas – išanalizuoti R. Zagorskienės ir R. Abstract:
In this thesis I aim to improve phrase-based statistical machine translation (PBSMT) in a number of ways by the use of text harmonization strategies. PBSMT systems are built by training statistical models on large corpora of human translations. This architecture generally performs well for languages with similar structure. If the languages are different for example with respect to word order or morphological complexity, however, the standard methods do not tend to work well. I address this problem through text harmonization, by making texts more similar before training and applying a PBSMT system. I investigate how text harmonization can be used to improve PBSMT with a focus on four areas: compounding, definiteness, word order, and unknown words. For the first three areas, the focus is on linguistic differences between languages, which I address by applying transformation rules, using either rule-based or machine learning-based techniques, to the source or target data. For the last area, unknown words, I harmonize the translation input to the training data by replacing unknown words with known alternatives. I show that translation into languages with closed compounds can be improved by splitting and merging compounds. I develop new merging algorithms that outperform previously suggested algorithms and show how part-of-speech tags can be used to improve the order of compound parts. Scandinavian definite noun phrases are identified as a problem forPBSMT in translation into Scandinavian languages and I propose a preprocessing approach that addresses this problem and gives large improvements over a baseline. Several previous proposals for how to handle differences in reordering exist; I propose two types of extensions, iterating reordering and word alignment and using automatically induced word classes, which allow these methods to be used for less-resourced languages. Finally I identify several ways of replacing unknown words in the translation input, most notably a spell checking-inspired algorithm, which can be trained using character-based PBSMT techniques. Overall I present several approaches for extending PBSMT by the use of pre- and postprocessing techniques for text harmonization, and show experimentally that these methods work. Text harmonization methods are an efficient way to improve statistical machine translation within the phrase-based approach, without resorting to more complex models.

Abstract:
This study explores the cultural dimension of translating children's and adolescent literature. Framed within the theories of cultural studies, translation studies, Baktinian dialogism, and reader response theories, this study is three-fold: (1) a content analysis is conducted to identify the cultural and linguistic shifts in the translated books and the strategies utilized by the translators for making those shifts, (2) the responses of the source-text (ST) and the target-text (TT) readers are compared; (3) the potential relationship between the translation strategies and the reader responses are inferred based on the findings from (1) and (2). The expected findings are: (1) adept use of various translation strategies helps the TT readers recognize themes as similar as the ST readers; (2) some interventions may create deviating responses in the TT readers as compared with the ST readers; (3) some unique responses by either the ST or the TT readers may be as a direct result of cultural differences more than the translation strategies. The implication section provides recommendations to publishers, translators, educators, parents, teacher educators, and researchers, and suggestions for further research.

Abstract:
The paper analyzes the translation of discourse markers from English into Lithuanian. Discourse markers are words or word combinations, who contribute little to the propositional meaning of an utterance but serve a variety of important conversational functions guiding interlocutors towards the intended interpretation of an utterance. The aim of the research is to prove the polyfunctional nature of discourse markers and the significance of rendering their meanings in translation from English into Lithuanian. The paper reviews the basic theoretical orientations within which discourse markers are analyzed and presents the list of defining and non-defining properties of discourse markers. Correct interpretation of discourse markers depend on the conversational function they serve in a particular situation rather than on lexical meaning of an item, therefore the functions of the discourse markers selected for the analysis (you know, I mean, well, okay, so, like, now) are reviewed as well. The empirical part is based on the analysis of the translation of discourse markers in two novels: John Irving’s 'A Widow for One Year' and Melvin Burgess’ 'Doing it'.
Kadangi teisinga diskurso žymeklių interpretacija priklauso ne nuo leksinės lingvistinio vieneto reikšmės, bet nuo jo atliekamos funkcijos, darbe taip pat aprašomos analizei pasirinktų žymeklių (you know, I mean, well, okay, so, like, now) funkcijos. Empirinė dalis pagrįsta diskurso žymeklių vertimu dvejuose romanuose: John Irving "A Widow for One Year" ir Melvin Burgess "Doing it".

Full text
Abstract:
Since the transfer of a message between two cultures very frequently takes place through the medium of a written text qua communicative event, it would seem useful to attempt to ascertain whether there is any kind of pattern in the use of strategies for the effective interlingual transfer of this message. Awareness of potentially successful strategies, within the constraints of context, text type, intended TL function and TL reader profile will enhance quality and cost-effectiveness (time, effort, financial costs) in the production of the target text. Through contrastive analysis of pairs of advertising texts, SL and TL, French and English, this study will attempt to identify the nature of some recurring choices made by different translators in the attempt to recreate ST information in the TL in such a manner as to reproduce as closely as possible the informative, persuasive and affective functions of the text as advertising material. Whilst recurrence may be seen to be significant in terms of illustrating tendencies with regard to the solution of problems of translation, this would not necessarily be taken as confirmation of the existence of pre-determined or prescriptive rules. These tendencies could, however, be taken as a guide to potential solutions to certain kinds of context-bound and text-type specific problem. Analysis of translated text-pairs taken from the field of advertising should produce examples of constraints posed by the need to select the content, tone and form of the Target Text, in order to ensure maximum efficacy of persuasive effect and to ensure the desired outcome, as determined by the Source Text function. When evaluating the success of a translated advertising text, constraints could be defined in terms of the culture-specific references or assumptions on which a Source Text may build in order to achieve its intended communicative function within the target community.

Jawad, Hisham Ali. "Repetition in Arabic literary discourse : patterns, shifts and translation strategies." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/24738.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis has three goals: to identify patterns of repetition in the Arab writers Taha Hussein’s and Muhammad al-Muwaylihi’s texts, their shift in the English translations, and to establish the translation strategies used in this area. The empirical base material for this study consists of a three-part autobiography (al-Ayyaam, ‘The Days’) and a narrative fiction (Hadiith ‘Isaa ibn Hishaam, ‘Isa ibn Hisham’s Tale’). As a first step Taha Hussein and Muhammad al-Muwaylihi along with their texts are presented and criteria for selecting research material discussed. Secondly, the notion of repetition is explored from the perspective of linguistic and cultural norms, and issues related to the norm theories discussed. Lastly, a comparative analysis is carried out in five chapters to see how instances of repetition are rendered in the English translations. The findings show that Arabic texts utilise repetitive patterns for text-building and rhetorical purposes. These patterns are manifested, on all levels, in phonological, morphological and lexical repetition, lexical doublets paraphrase, parallelism and chiasmus. A stereoscopic type of lexical doublet cements textual cohesion and coherence by signalling complex meaning that goes beyond the confines of the doublet. Patterns of repetition are shifted in the English translations and various translation strategies are applied, the most common being grammatical transposition and reduction. A statistical assessment of the translation of lexical doublets in three samples is done. The samples are about 2500 words each and randomly selected from the autobiography’s three parts. The figures suggest that one translator (Part One) adopts a source text-oriented strategy versus a shifting strategy preferred by the other two. This is a useful indicator of the direction of the translations, towards either adequacy or acceptability.

Abstract:
The present study deals with the work and practice of three Scandinavian translators, namely Kjell Olaf Jensen (Norwegian), Marianne Öjerskog (Swedish) and Agnete Dorph Stjernfelt (Danish). The main question of the thesis is what strategies the translators use when translating culture-specific elements from French and English. Theoretically the thesis positions itself within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies and draws upon system theories as well as Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of culture. The method consists of a source text – target text analysis, using a somewhat modified version of Pedersen’s (2007) method identifying seven translation strategies, namely (1) retention, (2) specification, (3) direct translation, (4) generalization, (5) substitution, (6) omission and (7) official equivalent. In this thesis the three former and the official equivalent are categorized as “adequate”, whereas generalization, substitution and omission are categorized as “acceptable” using Toury’s (2012) terminology. Six different types of culture-specific elements are investigated, namely (1) titles, address and professional titles, (2) currencies, (3) weights and measures, (4) literature and music, (5) education, and (6) names. In addition to this analysis, interviews with the three translators were carried out. Results show that there are both similarities and dissimilarities in the translators’ choices of translation strategies. It also turns out that the strategies used to a great extent depend on the culture-specific element in question and hardly ever on the source language. Results also suggest that the higher the translators’ amount of accumulated total capital, the more likely it is that they adopt a heterodoxic translation strategy. Jensen and Stjernfelt are more often positioned at one of the two extremes of the adequacy–acceptability axis than is the case for Öjerskog. Moreover, results from the interviews and the text analyses show that there are a number of norms that govern the translators’ practices. The translatorial practice is to manoeuver in a field governed by norms in order to produce the best possible target texts – target texts that are true to the original and conform to domestic literary standards.

Abstract:
Acknowledging the difficulties of achieving effective strategic management in practice, this thesis investigates how formal strategies quite often succeed in conditioning organisational actions even in firms such as professional service firms, which may lack effective measures for coercing action and which often depend on distributed decision-making. The fundamental question posed in this investigation is: what are the social processes that make strategies work? This thesis addresses that question by contributing to our understanding of strategy realisation as a continuing process of translating formal strategies into ‘strategies-in-practice’, i.e. the situated performance of strategies through choices, actions, and practices pertaining to the selection and accomplishment of concrete assignments. The thesis investigates this translation process in three small professional service firms, in which the responsibility for enacting the strategies lies with autonomous practitioners, making centralised strategy realisation difficult. Searching for integration rather than further fragmentation of different strands of strategy research, the thesis make use of Porterian activity systems theory, Giddens’ structuration theory, Wittgensteinian theory of rule-following, Searlean theory of intentionality, and the strategy-as-practice approach, in order to understand the translation process as the intentional structuration of practice. The thesis reports two main contributions, the first addressing a gap in strategy re-search, the second contradicting prevailing theories. The first contribution is an outline of a theory of strategy translation: how formal strategies are translated into strategies-in-practice, coping with insoluble strategic dilemmas, and achieving maintenance of strategic position and strategies-in-practice under pressure for unwanted change. Good strategies-in-practice are as much about managing dilemmas as about eliminating them. Second, in contrast to prevailing strategic positioning theory and generic strategies, this study documents the potential benefits of straddling strategically distinct services within a single activity system, in terms of: learning opportunities; work variation; better opportunities for attracting, developing, and retaining talented people; the possibilities of capitalising on client relationships; and the dynamics of routinisation of once-novel services.

Abstract:

This study deals with difficulties of different nature encountered in the process of translating a tourist booklet on Dover Castle, published by English Heritage. The study focuses on grammatical aspects as the translation of the passive and attributive adjectives, and lexical aspects as the translation of terminology and cultural words and expressions. The analysis is based on Peter Newmark's translation theory and translation strategies. Passives and adjectives have been divided into groups based on the translation models and strategies used, and the focus is on changes in the grammatical structure. Most passives were rendered as passives in Swedish by the use of s-passives, which involves a change in the grammatical structure. Most adjectives in the source text were translated by the use of a corresponding adjective in the target language, with no change in the grammatical structure. However, some adjectives were translated using for example a prepositional phrase or a compound noun.

The analysis on terminology and cultural aspects focuses on what translation strategies have been used and problems that may occur concerning such aspects. Most source language terms were translated by the use of corresponding target language terms found in dictionaries or parallel texts. Some of the terms were transferred into the target text in their source text form, with an added explanation.

The cultural aspects consisted mainly of names, which were dealt with in different ways. Some were transferred using the source language form, and in some cases conventionalised Swedish forms were used. The main aim of the translation has been to render the text as natural as possible in Swedish, and the main aim of the analysis has been to discuss certain aspects of difficulty that occurred in the translation process.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2007.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study has been a long journey to pursue the art and craft involved in a translation process. The indisputably differing natures of the languages at stake have been prominent in the translator's psychological frame throughout the process. The acknowledgement of the differing natures of languages often means knowing exactly what has to be transferred and in which manner it has to be transferred without compromising the demands of any of the languages at stake. The latter also speaks to the preservation of the message of the ST in the TL in the process of transition. The translation of Molope's Dancing in the Dust has given good ground for the exploration of the processes involved in a literary translation. Although the status of Molope's novel in the publishing market appears to be relatively new, there are some good grounds to declare it as fairly translatable. It has been noted in the study that there has been a desire to consult her existing literatures with an intention to evaluate her dominant style of writing, or any of her translated works so that it becomes easier to determine the translatability of this novel. However, this only proved to be an unsuccessful business in the sense that this novel is the first of her works, ever. Nevertheless, it has been stated simultaneously in this study that the expressiveness of Mol ope's novel, especially in rooting out the main events of the 197 6 Soweto Uprisings, ultimately convinced the translator that this art is worthy to be translated. The acknowledgement (by some legends) ofMolope's potential to probe into the main events of the struggle during that era has been another area the translator could rely on. This attempt has been done albeit Molope's sometimes poignant style of writing (much of this has been said in the study), which sought to pose some problematic areas. As has been declared in the hypothesis section, translatability is possible if the process of translation commences on a ST analysis, whereby problematic areas (or areas of interest thereof) are identified with an intention to select a suitable translation strategy. Suffice then to say that an attempt to answer the translatability question of this novel has been made in the chapter of annotation. Assembling a chapter of annotation is itself an attempt to demonstrate the translator's creativity in manoeuvring the ST material in order to produce what she assumes will suit the target readers. The discussion of well-established translation literatures in Chapter 2 serves to give background to the random choice of particular translation strategies at particular points in time. Therefore, the literature which forms Chapter 2 of this study serves to substantiate both what appears in the chapter of annotation and the entire product thereof.

Abstract Title: How to translate cultural references Language: French Author: Helena Forsell University/Department/Year: Linnaeus University/School of Language and Literature/2014 The main focus of this paper has been to find out which difficulties the translator comes across when trying to find cultural references that will apply in the target text. Since the original text treats a cultural aspect concerning the French gastronomic meal, the aim has also been to find out whether a deeply human trait, such as eating a meal in the company of others, produces translation problems despite a fairly common ground between French and Swedish culture. The source text used in this study is Convention pour la Sauvegarde du Patrimoine culturel immatériel, Dossier de Candidature n◦00437, which was published in 2010 and translated into Swedish in 2014. The main translation strategies used are adaptation, equivalence, addition and omission. Keywords: Cultural adaptation, translation strategies, reference, metonymy.

This paper sets out to investigate how different kinds of adaption strategies can work in synergy to overcome culturally prompted translation difficulties. The strategies used were analysed in the translation of a text from a tourist guide containing references to local phenomena. It was found that the different strategies combine when overcoming the translation difficulties, but that not all of them turn out useful. It is suggested that source texts that are bound to a physical location as regards contents are likely to be culturally adaptable intranslation mainly by means of addition, omission and generalization.

Abstract:
This thesis describes the textual strategies used in the translation into English of fictional dialogue, with particular reference to a content area as yet unexplored in Translation Studies: Japanese comic-books and animated cartoons. It does this by means of comparative case studies of the textual procedures used in different translations of Japanese source-texts. The comparisons are of target texts, and are sometimes interlingual in nature (English vs. French) and sometimes intralingual (English vs. English). The analytic approach is stylistic, focusing on the narrative functions of setting and character. The accumulation of case studies reported in the thesis provides new information about conventions of translating fictional dialogue into English. The findings are that, unlike their French counterparts, none of the English translations investigated in this thesis makes use of intermediate translation. English translations assimilates character voice more strongly than French translations, and the same trend emerges with regard to military and scientific register. However, no overall interlingual difference emerges clearly with regard to the translation of culture-specific items. The thesis also provides new information about specific modes in the translation of fictional dialogue (dubbing, subtitling and comic-book translation). English comic-book translations domesticate character voice strongly, adding vulgarity, as well as substituting and autonomously creating English dialects. English dubs transform indices of character by inserting jokes, vulgar language and stereotypical foreign expressions. However in the two cases where English dubs could be compared intralingually, the more recent translations adapt the Japanese dialogue less than the earlier versions. The conventions of comic-book translations and dubbing differ in these respects from contemporary prescriptions of literary translation theory. Subtitles are less domesticating than dubs or comic books. Although subtitling sometimes neutralises stylistic features of Japanese dialogue, analysis of recent subtitles shows a number of compensatory procedures can be used to create corresponding indices of character in the target text.

Rasul, Sabir Hasan. "Procedures and strategies in English-Kurdish translation of written media discourse." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/9628/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present research explores translation procedures and strategies employed in current English-Kurdish translation of written media discourse. It is located within Toury’s (1995/2012) framework of Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS). The research sets out to contribute to Translation Studies, specifically the study of journalism translation. Despite the fact that translation has been an inseparable part of media and journalism activities for decades, if not centuries, the systematic study of media translation is as recent as the turn of the new millennium. This study focuses on English-Kurdish translation of written media discourse, which has remained largely under-researched. The study precisely sets out to identify the patterns of translation procedures and the overall translation strategies prevalent in Kurdish translations of English journalistic texts. To do so, a composite model is formulated based on an integration of three influential taxonomies of translation procedures proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (1958/1995), Newmark (1988) and Dickins, Hervey and Higgins (2002). The model is applied to a set of 45 journalistic texts translated from English into Kurdish, which altogether make a corpus of approximately 75,000 words. A comparative analysis of ST-TT coupled pairs is carried out to identify patterns of translation procedures at the linguistic as well as cultural level. To look at the findings from a different perspective, a research questionnaire is also conducted with English-Kurdish translators working in the Kurdish media. Based on the patterns of translation procedures, the overall transition strategies are then determined. Analysis in Chapters 6, 7 and 8 leads to the conclusion that literal translation, borrowing and omission are the most frequent translation procedures at the linguistic level, and cultural borrowing, cultural redomestication and calque are the most frequent at the cultural level, keeping in mind that the notion of cultural redomestication constitutes the present study’s major contribution to Translation Studies. As for the overall strategies, semantic translation is the predominant orientation of the linguistic aspect of the translation, while foreignization is the predominate orientation of the cultural aspect of the translation.

Abstract:
Examining linguistic and pragmatic aspects of the translation of Japanese empathy and politeness in contemporary novels reveals that socio-cultural meaning is often neutralised. From an educational perspective, examples for intercultural language teaching and learning, universal and culturally specific values, and the attribution of meaning in collectivist and individualist societies can be examined. Implications for the viability of a universal approach to translation are discussed in relation to values that are specific to Japanese culture.

Abstract: Translator's production of meanings is not random, but as a social constituted subject, translator chooses his ways for producing texts that are suitable to the contextualization given to the translated text in target culture. This contextualization may be seen as the parameters the purposes for the text in target culture, translation's audience and the context in which its readers may be inserted which underlie translator's strategic choices. The discussion about translation contextualization is relevant in translator's activity as the specificities of each text ask for adjustments in translator's strategies in order to the target text could be considered suitable and admissible in the target culture for a specific target audience. The present work seeks to show that translation contextualization determine the strategies usage so that the target text can be in accordance to the established parameters. It also aims to analyze the different possible readings that could be related to the use of one or another strategy. To do it, Gulliver's Travels specific translations into Brazilian Portuguese were selected for the analysis. It's believed that this kind of reflection is relevant to translator's teaching as in his professional life texts will be differently contextualized and the development of strategies for text production may lead the reader to different readings, which are also translator's responsibility
