Abstract:
Philosophical translation between "linguistic violence" and translative hermeneutics. Translational considerations from the perspective of the translation(s) of Jean-Paul Sartre's L'être et le néant The establishment of translatology as a scientific discipline is a late phenomenon to which not only linguistics but also the philosophy of language has contributed significantly. Although the considerations of Schleiermacher, Ricoeur, Derrida, Balibar, Cassin and other philosophers are very stimulating for the examination of the translation problematics, they do not offer a particular translation theory of philosophical texts. Most of their works are of little help in practice when it comes to translating a complicated philosophical text. That is why I will take in this paper the opposite path and start from my own experience as a translator of philosophical literature into Bulgarian and, more concretely, from my translation of Jean-Paul Sartre's L'être et le néant. On the base of this key work of contemporary philosophy and its translations into different languages, I will address the difficulties and the specifics of philosophical translation, discuss various translation methods, and argue several theses, which could serve as impulses for a further development of translation theory and translation practice in the field of philosophy.

Abstract:
In the development of humanities in Indonesia, particularly literature, hermeneutics can be regarded as a relatively new approach. There are still a few literary studies involving solely this approach. Similarly, it has been difficult to find Indonesian written works, particularly books, that specifically discuss hermeneutics except those that are translation works. A book entitled Hermeneutika Sastra Barat dan Timur written by Abdul Hadi W.M. is one of the efforts to fill the gap in hermeneutic discourse in the approach of literary study in Indonesia.

Abstract:
Sargon Boulus (1944–2007) is widely acclaimed as one of the pioneers of modern Arabic poetry. The trajectories of his life and work make him an appealing subject through which one may explore the dialogues his work initiated, and the horizons that it opened, between Arabic literature and world poetry. His work and the way it has been largely ignored or (mis)read can even highlight some of the problematics and limitations of the category of “world” literature and its institutional networks and asymmetries. The recent publication of his anthology of selected translations from world literature and collected interviews is an opportunity to study his work as a translator more seriously. This essay takes stock of his contributions and traces his curious affinity with the Chinese poet Tu Fu (712–770). It concludes by reading two of his late poems and links them to his own ethics and politics of translation and writing.

Abstract:
This paper discusses different approaches to the translation of Qur’anic metaphor, as one of the semantic problematic areas in translating the Qur’an, with a view to recommending principled criteria for translating Qur’anic metaphor. An attempt has been made to analyze, compare and assess six different approaches to the translation of Qur’anic metaphor and a blueprint is provided. The six selected translations are those by Sale (first published in1734), Ali (first published in 1937), Arberry (first published in 1955), Dawood (first published in 1956), Khatib (first published in 1986) and Khān–Hilālī (1996 edition). These translatons represent different orientations in translating the Muslim’s holy Book. Moreover, their translations are regularly reprinted.

Abstract:
AbstractThese remarks take up the reflexive problematics of Being and Nothingness and related texts from a metalogical perspective. A mutually illuminating translation is posited between, on the one hand, Sartre’s theory of pure reflection, the linchpin of the works of Sartre’s early period and the site of their greatest difficulties, and, on the other hand, the quasi-formalism of diagonalization, the engine of the classical theorems of Cantor, Godel, Tarski, Turing, etc. Surprisingly, the dialectic of mathematical logic from its inception through the discovery of the diagonal theorems can be recognized as a particularly clear instance of the drama of reflection according to Sartre, especially in the positing and overcoming of its proper valueideal, viz. the synthesis of consistency and completeness. Conversely, this translation solves a number of systematic problems about pure reflection’s relations to accessory reflection, phenomenological reflection, pre-reflective self-consciousness, conversion, and value. Negative foundations, the metaphysical position emerging from this translation between existential philosophy and metalogic, concurs by different paths with Badiou’s Being and Event in rejecting both ontotheological foundationalisms and constructivist antifoundationalisms.

Antonova, Anna. "Three Faces of the Monster: Interpreting Disability and Creating Meaning in Translations of Alice Munro’s “Child’s Play”." TranscUlturAl: A Journal of Translation and Cultural Studies 11, no. 1 (August 6, 2019): 85–103. http://dx.doi.org/10.21992/tc29400.

Full text
Abstract:
This article addresses the problematics of creating meaning in literary translation by comparing three versions of Alice Munro’s short story “Child’s Play” translated into German, Ukrainian, and Russian. Proceeding from a fluid and unstable source text that represents the conflict of socially perpetuated normative thinking and non-conforming “monstrous” bodies marked by intellectual disability, the translators renegotiate the meaning of embodied otherness and its stigmatization in society in unique ways that reflect their personal perspectives on translation and individual agendas in their translation projects. Munro’s focus on the relationship between a special needs girl and the narrator responsible for her death exposes the society’s deeply ingrained aversion, fear, and hate against people with intellectual disabilities. These prejudiced views find their expression in equating “special” bodies with passive objects, repulsive animal-like creatures, and wild monsters. However, this metaphorical language reflects first and foremost on the narrator, whose hateful speech, breaking through the surface of her seemingly impartial account, unmasks the true faces of the victim and the perpetrator. Each translator ascribes a different meaning to Munro’s deliberately ambiguous narrative: while the German version accentuates the original’s insistence on complexity and uncertainty, the Ukrainian translation increases intensity of the protagonist’s emotional involvement bringing her hatred and disgust to the extreme to make a point about social marginalization of the vulnerable other. The Russian text, conversely, rationalizes the narrator’s actions and turns her tale into a deeply tragic personal confession to align it with a typical plotline of the Russian literary tradition. Overall, three target-language versions of the story add new dimensions to the original text and further destabilize it by consolidating their preferred readings in their treatment of the socially constructed opposition between “monstrous” and “normal”.

The article compares “cultural transfer” and “dialogue of cultures” as socio-cultural realities in two "border" civilizations of planetary scale – Latin America and Russia. The author develops and illustrates the thesis that identity of subjects of intercultural interaction is a necessary precondition and the key to cultural transfer. The focus is on the problematics of the dialogue of cultures. According to the author, the basic reason for all difficulties to put into practice the ideal of dialogue consists in what W. O. Quine described as the problem of "radical translation", that is, of understanding texts created within another culture based on essentially different views about the universe and life.

Abstract:
Margaret Atwood’s masterful linguistic creativity exceeds the limits of ordinary discourse. Her elliptical language contributes to interpretative gaps, while the ambiguity and openness of her texts intentionally deceive the reader. The translator of Atwood’s texts therefore faces the challenge of identifying the rich interpretative potential of the original, as well as of preserving it in the target language. Witnessing the rise of artificial intelligence, a natural question arises whether a human translator could ever be replaced by a machine in translating such challenging texts. This article aims to contribute to the ongoing debate on literary machine translation by examining the translations of Atwood’s “Life Stories” generated by two neural machine translation (NMT) systems and comparing them to those produced by translation students. We deliberately chose a literary text where the aesthetic value depends mostly on the author’s personal style, and which we had presumed would be problematic to translate.

Abstract:
Translation of the Qur’an is still a problematic issue for each translator in the Islamic theology, because the Quran has numerous Islamic terms/words that hold multiple or double meanings, which cause problems in translation. These problems are due to the dissimilar translations of puns (tawriyah) and the misinterpretations between the intended meanings of puns with their inherent notions, which could result in a certain amount of ambiguity. and end up translating in superficial sense. This research deals with the challenges of translating the meanings of puns (tawriyah) from the Quran into English. The research corpus is based on several verses (Ayat) selected from the Holy Quran. The objectives of the study are to determine the types of English puns in the Quranic text to identify causes for misunderstanding the meanings of puns in the Holy Quran from Arabic into English. Keywords: The Holy Quran, puns misunderstanding, delabastita strategies, reasons for misinterpreting the Quran.

Al-Ma'ni, Musallam. "The problematics of technical translation into Arabic : the case of the Royal Air Force of Oman." Thesis, University of Salford, 2000. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26535/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the scope and intricacies of technical translation in Oman, in general, and its Royal Air Force (RAFO), in particular. The Study, which is the first of its kind in Oman, focuses on a specific category of Omani translators: technical translators currently working in RAFO with experience ranging from 3 to 10 years. To capture the reality of translation in Oman and to provide a corpus for this study, samples of translations rendered by the subject translators are examined and analysed. To achieve such objectives, six chapters make up the thesis: Chapter 1 sets both the motivations and the assumptions which underly the thesis. Chapter 2 selectively reviews some translation approaches within the sphere of translation studies. Chapter 3 is devoted to the study of technical translation and explores the scope of this type of translation. Chapter 4 examines the development of translation in the Arab world and focuses on the way it spread in the past and its current situation. Chapter 5 specifically takes the translation movement in RAFO as the case study. The chapter starts with a description of translation in Oman and RAFO and then moves to data collection, processing and analysis. Technical texts have been categorized, to our knowledge for the first time in the literature of technical translation, to three main groups according to the degree of their technicality: 1) Local Technical Texts (LTT), 2) Common Technical Texts (CTT), and 3) Highly Technical Texts (HTT). Chapter 6 concludes the thesis and provides some recommendations as well as suggestions for further research. The results of data analysis indicate that although technical translation plays a vital role in the development of the nation, there is still a lack of an overall strategy towards the organization of this profession at various levels. RAFO has endeavoured to introduce a programme that would produce qualified translators capable of dealing with texts of different degrees of technicality. Data analysis shows that the translators face little problems in handling texts from a linguistic point of view. However, the source of their problems is technical terminology for which there are neither specialists translators nor adequate Arabic dictionaries available. The fact that Oman still lacks a body and special dictionaries devoted to technico-scientific terms places obstacles for translating. It further hinders the standardization of terminology and causes confusion for translators as to which terms they may choose. It follows, therefore, that these and other results can be interpreted as reflecting support for the establishment of a body that would supervise and organize all translation activities in Oman such as a language academy. There is also a need for a nation-wide policy towards arabicisation, translation and dissemination of scientific and technical terms. A pan-Arab policy remains an ultimate goal.

Abstract:
In my essay I have focused on the most common difficulties in translation from danish to swedish. My research is based on interviews with ten translators and a few linguists. In addition, I have read some theoretical texts about language history and translation studies. The results are unanimous and show that the most translation faults arise because of the translators difficulties in separating two very similar languages. My research in danish/swedish translation is the first of its kind.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Translation is not just about the transmission of information; no, translations build bridges between worlds, between cultures, and between people. However, all this can only be done successfully if the translator understands the essential information of a source text and succeeds in translating it into another language. The medium of film is taking centre stage in the happenings of our globalized world. It directly and indirectly reflects ways of life, mentalities and language habits of a specific cultural region. Although the diffusion and production of movies is no longer bound by national borders, the problem remains that the audience of the recipient country must be given an understanding of the language and culture of each country of origin. In an effort to solve this problem, subtitling and synchronization are used. But is it even possible to transfer cultural and linguistic phenomena adequately and equivalently, to at least make them understandable, or are there cultural specifics that do not transcend their country's borders? This question is the central issue of the dissertation. The study focuses on BIENVENUE CHEZ LES CH’TIS (Dany Boon, 2008) and BENVENUTI AL SUD (Luca Miniero, 2010). These two movies represent different fragments of French and Italian culture. They address the north-south divide or domestic prejudice between different regions. It remains to be explored to what extent these can be transmitted and made clear to a foreign-language audience. From a linguistic point of view, the reproduction of dialect along with its connotation is notable, especially as misunderstandings arising from the dialect often serve as the basis of the movies' humorous sequences

Danowski, Grzegorz. "Translation and the problematics of textual integrity : a comparative analysis of two English renderings of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Dnevnik pisatelia." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/14102.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper is a comparative analysis of selections from the two English translations of Fyodor Dostoevsky's “Дневник писателя (1873-1881)” — The Diary of a Writer (Boris Brasol, 1949) and A Writer's Diary (Kenneth Lantz, 1993). The selections include the short stories "The Meek One" and "Bobok," the fictional epistle "A Half-Letter from a 'Certain Person,'" the semifictional sketch "A Hundred-Year-Old Woman," as well as two feullietons: "What Does the Word 'Striutsky' Mean" and "The History of the Verb 'Stushevatsia.'" While elements of reader response theory and recent translation studies scholarship provided a basic theoretical framework for this discussion, the latter shaped itself mainly as a comparison of the three primary texts: the Russian and the two English translations. This approach made it possible to amass a considerable database of textual detail upon which to draw for pronouncements regarding the difficulties that may potentially accompany translation from Russian into English in general, as well as the difficulties that seem to originate in the peculiarities of Dostoevsky's style. Although an effort has been made throughout to avoid a purely qualitative comparison of the two translations, this analysis frequently favours Lantz's translation as more accurate and flexible in its approach. Rather than constituting the ultimate object of the present study, whenever made, qualitative judgements provide points of departure for inquiry into the nature of the translator's task—one that often involves the ability and willingness to accept the untranslatable. By considering some parts of “Дневник” in relation to their English translations, this paper demonstrates that the most important aspect of the work is its "one-ness." Although clearly a combination of genres, it is also a separate genre in its own right. As this analysis proves, the formal paradox inherent in the Diary's very design has until recently puzzled, discouraged, and challenged both literary critics and translators. Together with Brasol's and Lantz's translations, this paper is offered as an effort aimed at promoting a better understanding of the Diary within the context of Dostoevsky's other literary and philosophical output.

The master thesis treats about the multi awarded roman Le dernier des nôtres. This roman is the second written by the French novelist and journalist Adélaïde de Clermont-Tonnerre. The purpose of this thesis is the translation of some chapters of this roman into Czech language. On the following pages, we will focus on analyzing and professionally comment our way of translating. We will study the different elements composing the translation and the cultural specificities we had to consider while translating. Not less important was the general approach of theoretical translation processes and methodology, but also the problematics that could be faced by a translator. Theoretical chapters give a better understanding of translation discipline.

Abstract:
This thesis Issues of translation of the novel Chronos of Taras Antypovych focuses on the indication and analysis of various difficult lexical phenomena in the science-fiction novel of contemporary Ukrainian writer Taras Antypovych. Among the specific features of his novel we could name such as almost complete absence of facts, plenty of neologisms, a lot of self-described names, and frequent mixing of different functional styles. The first part of work deals with the characteristic and detailed analysis of the novel Chronos, the second part is both theoretical and practical one that could be considered as the central part of the work. Such phenomena as neologisms, slang and argot, language games, vulgarisms, own names, "surzhik", phraseological units, interjections, and the words derived from them are considered here as one that may appear problematic in the translation from Ukrainian into Czech. The theoretical explanation is accompanied by examples from the text of the novel which I translated into Czech and supported with comments. The main aim of the work was to clarify the translation process and to present one or more solutions to the problems indicated above. Abstract:
The diploma thesis offers an analysis of a unique set of texts. The analysis explores the language devices used in the composition of the texts. The set of texts includes a short story Groza by Vladimir Nabokov and its translations. The short story was originally written in Russian, and then translated by the author into English. There exist two Czech translations, one from Russian, one from English. The thesis presents a theoretical framework for the analysis. It is composed of two parts. The first one summarizes the most frequent translation related changes in meaning. The second one compares Nabokov's theory and practice of translation. The theoretical framework is applied to the comparison of the target-language texts with the source-language texts, as well as to the comparison of the two translations from different source-language texts. Comparison of the results of the analysis with the hypotheses stated in the Introduction affirms the movement of the meaning towards stylistic neutrality and shows the influence of the source-language upon the target-language. On the other hand it rejects the statement that Nabokov as a self-translator wanted to preserve the literary qualities of the text, being ready to sacrifice its language qualities. Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Davis’s translation and rewriting of Flaubert’s work in her translation of Madame Bovary and in her ‘Ten Stories from Flaubert’. The first half of the chapter analyses her translation of Madame Bovary, asking how it is positioned through Davis’s paratextual materials. As the retranslation of a multiply translated novel, Davis positions her translation as a translation of the style of the novel, against earlier translations. While Madame Bovary is a conventional translation, Davis’s ‘Ten Stories from Flaubert’ problematizes the distinction between writing and translation, as the stories are based on translated extracts from Flaubert’s letters. As such, they are read with both Davis and Flaubert in mind; this doubleness recalls found objects that are both everyday objects and presented as artistic works.

Abstract:
This article explores the different philological and methodological strategies of three Italian translations of El Burlador de Sevilla y Convidado de piedra, a particularly complex and rich text. The comparative analysis will focus on a number of sequences that are significant both for interpretation of the original text and the different translation options that may arise. Issues related to the title’s translation, onomastics, neologisms, proverbs and problematic places, will be addressed. Such issues call for metalinguistic reflections that can be extremely useful when we decide to make one of the products of the aurei ingegni travel to Italy.

Abstract:
The year 1974, the 500th anniversary of Ariosto’s birth, inaugurated an unprecedented upsurge of interest in the Orlando Furioso both in Italy and in English-speaking countries. In the UK Peter Brand published the first post-war English monograph on the poet. The same year also saw the publication of Guido Waldman’s prose translation of the poem for Oxford University Press, while Barbara Reynolds’ two-volume verse translation for Penguin appeared in 1973 and 1977. This chapter asks what sort of Furioso do British readers encounter in these two twentieth-century translations? There is as yet no substantial comparison of these two versions, so this essay attempts to fill that gap by sampling the renderings of some problematic erotic episodes from Ariosto’s epic. What emerges is a range of translation errors, omissions and euphemisms but also some intelligent, felicitous solutions that combine intertextual allusions to British culture, the British imaginary and its literary traditions.

Abstract:
WinniethePooh, a literary work published by Alan Alexander Milne in 1926, has been appreciated by readers worldwide for nearly a century. The story about a little bear and his companions was first bellowed in book version, then became one of Disney’s best and unforgettable adaptations. The text proves rather difficult to translate, for Milne demonstrated great creativity, particularly in naming his characters and various places. It is rife with many ambiguous expressions, neologisms, onomatopoeias, and intentional language errors. The name of the eponymous bear, for instance, WinniethePooh, well illustrates the difficulty in translation, for Winnie, a reportedly diminutive form of Winifred, is allegedly a female name, whereas the bear is referred to as male. The Pooh part has also proven problematic in translation. The following article is an attempt at analyzing selected proper names in two Polish translations of the story. In 1938, Irena Tuwim published a translation entitled Kubuś Puchatek, which Polish readers immediately fell in love with. In 1986, Monika Adamczyk-Garbowska published her translation, Fredzia PhiPhi. It attracted a deluge of negative com-ments and contemptuous reactions with many readers expressing dislike for Fredzia PhiPhi, viewing it as a crime against the lauded first translation – which, as it happens, contains many mistakes and strays far from the original text.

Abstract:
Translation evaluation remains problematic, with industry marking errors with points-off systems while teachers use points-off and rubrics. Many rubrics are not adequately operationalized. Needed is an error category and severity system sufficiently differentiated for useful feedback and streamlined to enable feedback to large numbers. The American Translators Association (ATA) Flowchart for Error Point Decisions and Framework for Standardized Error Marking has been adapted for the classroom. This chapter provides statistics on errors and severities marked in two groups: 63 translations by German>English graduate students marked by the author and 17 examinations from the 2006 ATA Certification Examination marked by ATA graders. The predominant categories assigned to students are Punctuation, Usage, Mistranslation, Addition, and Misunderstanding, while ATA papers show Misunderstanding, Omission, Terminology, Literalness, Ambiguity, Grammar, and Style. Misunderstanding rated as the most serious error for both. Transfer errors are more frequently marked and more severely rated than grammar or language errors.

Abstract:
High Intensity Therapeutic Ultrasound (HITU) is an emerging field that shows considerable promise for noninvasively performing medical procedures such as tumor and fibroid ablation, clot destruction, vessel cauterization. Owing to the potential of sensor damage by the intense acoustic field, traditional methods of pre-clinical testing ultrasound devices, such as hydrophone scanning, are problematic with HITU devices. New techniques for performing pre-clinical testing of HITU devices are desirable in order to expedite commercialization. This paper discusses two methods currently being developed for noninvasively determining the intensity fields produced by HITU transducers.

Full text
Abstract:
In dynamic systems, motion transfer due to frictional effects could result in quasi-harmonic oscillations and stick-slip, with potentially undesirable effects. The track-following motion of a read/write (RW) head-assembly transfers frictional forced onto the translating tape. This, in turn, has the potential to introduce unwanted dynamic motion into the system, and to affect the track following operation. In extreme cases the tape could stick onto the head-assembly, which could then create the potential for sudden release (slip) of the tape, if the restoring forces exceed the static friction forces. Due to longitudinal tape motion, stick is only a possibility during start-stop operations. However, with increasingly smoother tape, the effects of friction induced vibration (FrIV) could become problematic for the next generation of tape drives.

In ASME 2012 31st International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2012-83608.

Abstract:
Full scale measurements of wave impact loads and their statistics in real sea states are desirable for validation of numerical simulations and for application to marine engineering design problems. Measuring and/or estimating wave forces on flat plates are especially problematic due to statistics of large waves in a given sea state, the intermittent statistics of wave breaking, the sensitivity of the loading relative to the phase of the incoming wave and scaling issues when translating from model scale data to full-scale. To increase our understanding of wave hydrodynamic pressures on a flat plate, an instrumented plate was deployed from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography’s research pier. The instrumented plate is exposed to a wide range of wave conditions with Hs ranging from 3–4 m in the winter and with Hs in the 1–2 m range in the summer. The instrumented flat plate is composed of three discrete modules containing 6 pressure gages. Data are being collected over a extended period, nominally 12 months, to characterize extreme value distributions due to wave impact loading.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In flexible manufacturing systems, straight line motions are often required in part handling, assembly, cutting, sealing, or welding operations. Rather than using a high performance industrial robot to execute the path directly, employment of a less precise robot outfitted with an end-of-arm tool comprising an exact straight line mechanism could be more effective in both performance and in cost. Exact straight line mechanisms with pin connections are easy to manufacture and assemble, in comparison to those realized by translational joints where alignment of linear axes or surface could be problematic. Such an issue becomes even more difficult when relatively large stroke and/or high precision of straight line motion is required. In this paper, a study of the kinematic characteristics of a special class of exact straight line mechanisms, Hart’s Inversor Type III, with emphasis toward dimension synthesis, is presented. An analytical approach for sizing the link lengths with respect to a desirable straight line stroke constraint is developed and illustrated with examples. Also presented are stiffness and mechanical advantage characteristics for additional design considerations.

"Performing Clinical Exams at Specific Joint Positions May Help Identify Injured Regions of the Glenohumeral Capsule Following Anterior Dislocation." In ASME 2012 Summer Bioengineering Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/sbc2012-80142.

Full text
Abstract:
The anteroinferior glenohumeral capsule (anterior band of the inferior glenohumeral ligament (AB-IGHL), axillary pouch) limits anterior translation, particularly in positions of external rotation. [1, 2] Permanent tissue deformation that occurs as a result of dislocation contributes to anterior instability, but, the extent and effects of this injury are difficult to evaluate as the deformation cannot be seen using diagnostic imaging. Clinical exams are used to identify the appropriate location of tissue damage and current arthroscopic procedures allow for selective tightening of localized capsule regions; however, identifying the specific location for optimal treatment of each patient is challenging. Although the reliability of clinical exams has been shown to change with joint position [3] a standardized procedure has yet to be established. This lack of standardization is particularly problematic since capsule function is highly dependent upon joint position [4–7], and could be responsible for failed repairs attributed to plication of the wrong capsular region [8]. Understanding the relationship between the location of tissue damage and changes in capsule function following anterior dislocation could aid clinicians in diagnosing and treating anterior instability. Therefore, the objective of this work was to compare strain distributions in the anteroinferior capsule before and after anterior dislocation in order to identify joint positions at which clinical exams would be capable of detecting damage (nonrecoverable strain) in specific locations.
