Abstract:
The Koran of the Philomaths is a fascinating adventure led by brilliant patriotic students, mainly Polish. They spent several years in Lithuania at the beginning of the 19th century, writing the first Polish translation of the Koran using the Latin alphabet. Numerous articles were devoted to this Koran, as well as several books on the Tatars of Northern Europe. However, those papers emphasize the political patriotic goals behind that translation. This long article, based on a doctoral thesis at the Sorbonne, follows another path and demonstrates that the translation of the Philomaths was first a scientific and literary project motivated by the great interest in Orientalism shown by the Philomaths. To support this, the first part of the article is dedicated to demonstrating the importance of the Orientalist movement in Poland and Vilnius in general, and among several members of the Philomaths and the Philarets. The question of rehabilitation of Polish Orientalists who lived in Russia in the 19th century is also included. The second part of this research addresses essential questions about the Koran of the Philomaths, such as who the real authors are, their sources, their level of Arabic and their work methodology. Some of these practical questions have never been addressed. This article also focuses on what happened to the manuscript of the Philomaths after their condemnation in 1823. It is true that the first printed Polish translation of Buczacki in Warsaw in 1858 is linked to that of the Philomaths. Nevertheless, the article firmly rejects the accusations of usurpation, which are very popular today. Finally, this research shows the lesser-known contribution of other important authors, such as Andrzej Potocki and Albert de Biberstein Kazimirski.

ABSTRACT: The translation of the Holy Qur'an has not ceased to cause ink to flow. Since the first drafts of the French translations of the Celestial Book of the Islamic Religion by Du Ryer, Antoine Galland, Savary or Kazimirski, translations made by Muslims have multiplied. That of the eminent Indian scholar Mohammed Hamidullah has been a landmark. It was taken up and revised by the King Fahd Complex for the printing of the Holy Qur'an in the holy city of Medina, cradle of Islam. This amended version, which proposed to focus on the dogmatic dimension of the text and to rid it of all deviations from pure monotheism, was intended to provide a well-known product, but this was not always the case, either at the ideological level or at the level of translation faithful to the original text. We took a sample of this revised translation, in the form of the Qur’anic Sura No. 22 Al-Hajj to carry out a comparative study between hamidullah’s version and the revised Saudi version, King Fahd Complex for the printing of the Holy Qur'an, in order to see at close what this latest version brings to that of the Indian scholar and in what way it wrongs him, while referring to three other famous Koranic translations, including that, the latest, of our gifted colleague, Dr. Nebil Radhouane, to make the distinction.

Abstract:
The article is about an analysis of translation of idioms in the novel by Conan Doyle entitled A Study in Scarlet. Translating idioms is often problematic for a translator because idioms are specific to a single language and rarely have the equivalent in other languages. Therefore, this study was conducted to find out the types of idioms used in the English version of the novel, to find out the strategies used by the translator of the Indonesian version of the novel in translating the English idioms, and to find out the accuracy, acceptability and readability of the translation of the idioms in the novel. In analysing the idioms and their translation, qualitative method was used, and the theories by Fernando (1996), Baker (2011) and Nababan, Nuraini, and Sumardiono (2012) were also used. The finding of the analysis shows that from 60 idioms found, semi-idiom is the type of idioms which is frequently found in the novel (31 idioms or 52%). Besides, it is revealed that translating the idioms by paraphrasing is the strategy which is mostly used by the translator in translating the idioms (38 idioms or 63%). In addition, it is revealed that the translation of idioms in the novel is accurate and acceptable although it is less readable. So, the quality of translation of idioms in the novel is good although it can be still improved. Keywords: accuracy, acceptability and readability of translation, idiom, translation, translation strategies

Abstract:
The article considers peculiar features found in Kazakh translation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective short story «The Red-Headed League» done in 2011. Since the translator K.Karamanuly interpreted the works of Conan Doyle from Russian into Kazakh, the article considers the original in comparison with the translation of two languages. The analysis of the translations under study clearly shows various approaches to conveying the content of the fiction works, aimed at adapting the detective stories to the Kazakh environment. The article explains the reasons for the existence of the different approaches and peculiarities in the Kazakh translation. The paper provides a successive analysis of how the key elements of Conan Doyle’s poetics – from the story title to the image of the narrator, characteristics of the main heroes, as well as space-time settings of the story – are delivered into the Kazakh language.

This article examines cases where translators are confronted with messagesm whose meaning is obscured by a simple cipher. Russian translators had to overcome certain difficulties while translating certain passages in the works of British (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie) and American (Edgar Allan Poe, Dan Brown) fiction writers. Substitution code (―The Gold-Bug‖, ―The Adventure of the Dancing Men‖), anagrams (―The da Vinci Code‖), as well as different kinds of text steganography (―The Gloria Scott‖, ―The Four Suspects‖) can be used to encrypt the information. Each case is illustrated with two examples. The translator has to depict not only the very process of deciphering a message, but also render its cryptic nature with the means of a target language (Russian). We show, that in half of the cases it is a mere translation of the deciphered text. It is a simpler way, because there is no need to create an analogue thereof. The grand purpose, however, remains unachieved. In two instances there were multiple translations of the same text (6 of ―The Gold-Bug‖ by E.A Poe and 9 of ―The Four Suspects‖ by A. Christie). This phenomenon can be explained not only by the popularity of the stories, but by the relatively small circulation of certain editions. We have undertaken a comparative analysis of these translations and have revealed discrepancies, concerning more and less significant translation units and, in some cases minor errors.

Abstract:
This paper reflects on the key issues of literary translation approaches suggested by Mykola Dmytrenko, an outstanding Ukrainian prose translator. Despite the vast research made by Ukrainian and foreign scholars regarding the translation (A. Bennet, S. Bassnet, M. Strykha) little is known about the contribution made by Ukrainian translators to the promotion of the Ukrainian literature on the international arena. Mykola Dmytrenko’s original arguments coming from value-based interview questions reveal the nature of translating process in terms of cultural transfer with a special emphasis on the literary standards and the distinctive nature of translation paradigm. As many translation theorists and researchers claim, there has been an accepted recognition of the fact that the use of the strategies and techniques of contemporary linguistics shift away to cultural studies. This article attempts to outline the scope of translation as a process by syndicating various extralinguistic phenomena as they occur in Mykola Dmytrenko’s translation project. Firstly, his translation programme embraces the issues of self with their close relation to the problems of cultural identity and the ones connected with tracing the target text within its new sociocultural context. Secondly, Mykola Dmytrenko’s translations provide his exceptional position in developing general principles through which he adequately clarifies the algorithm of choosing literary texts for translation and sheds light on the author selection as well as the ways literary translation networks function in a number of respects. Furthermore, the translator aims his works to be viewed in a broader context of building up the relations with the author of the original on the equal basis so that the target reader would feel he deals with the original text, not with the translation. With this purpose, Mykola Dmytrenko claims that he not only aspires to getting Ukrainian readers acquainted with the masterpieces of world literature, but also aims to develop the ability of cultivating their deductive skills as well as sharpening observation and forming the power of imagination. These explicate the reasons for the translator’s selection of literary texts by A. C. Doyle («A Scandal in Bohemia», «The Red-headed League», «A Case of Identity», «Boscombe Valley Mystery», «Thе Five Orange Pips», etc.). All these have been illustrated by the examples from A. Conan Doyle’s collection of detective stories «The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes» («The Reigate Puzzle»). So, the translator’s pragmatic view comes to be both from an inborn talent and a professional skill to produce the target text of the highest quality.

Abstract:
Abstract: For many years, it is believed that a good translator should be invisible in conducting his or her work. The more transparent and invisible the translator is, the better the quality of translation becomes. However, many experts argued that it is actually impossible for the translators to translate without leaving their thumbprints behind. Thus, the notion of translator style appeared. Studying and exploring the topic of translator style would provide more corroborative support on the view that translators are not merely a mirror of the original author; in fact, they are creative individuals with distinct linguistic characteristics and behaviors, and that translation is not inferior to writing. The objective of this study is to analyze the style of two Indonesian translators of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “A Scandal in Bohemia.” Moreover, this research also aims to enrich the literature of translator style in the Indonesian context since there are only a few studies about this particular topic in the Indonesian context. This research is qualitative in nature and utilized both corpus-assisted methodology and manual text analysis to gain the data. The findings show that the two Indonesian translators had fundamental differences in their translation. Translator A’s style in translating is more oriented to target text and target readers whereas Translators B are more inclined to adhere to the style of the original author and the source text. Abstract:
Japanese comics or manga have caught the world’s attention in recent years. It conveys stories through words and images in a specific order resulting in beautiful works. Now, manga is translated into various languages in the world, including Indonesian. The following study entailed a comparative analysis of the manga Meitantei Conan into Indonesia, primarily concentrating on: the format, for example, the arrangement of pages, lettering, and typography, what was translated what was not. In translating Japanese manga into Indonesian, it was found that there were similarities (retained elements) and differences (adjusted elements). We can found similarities between the original Japanese version and the Indonesian translated version of manga in the writing composition on the chapter title and onomatopoeia. Besides, there are also similarities in cultural terms because the translator maintains terms in Japanese as a translation strategy. The main difference between Original Japanese comics and the Indonesian translated version is the binding system of using, the type of font, and the use of Indonesian cultural elements so that the dialogue of the story characters is more communicative and easy to understand.

Abstract:
The project behind the research is to prepare the conditions for achieving a translation (written and published) of the Quran in the Comorian language. Such a translation has never been produced so far. To meet the needs of the Comorian language, this translation should not be built from scratch by the translator, but reflect the tradition of tafsiri, traditional genre which consists in orally explaining the Koranic text then translating it. This type of translation is done in koranic schools (madrasa), as well as in public meetings, held especially in mosques during the month of Ramadan. It derives from the traditional Arabic tafsîr or commentary, whose classic works are known and used as guides by teachers in the Comoros. The thesis includes a corpus of oral performance of these sessions of commentary -translation, transcribed and translated in French first literal then ordinary translation. The study analyzes the differences between translation and commentary (two concepts that are expressed in Comorian by the same word tafsiri), exposure methods used by teachers, issues of lexicon (loans, layers) and morpho-syntax and style (tendency to build a layer religious language specific to the exercise of tafsiri). It concludes with proposing to prefer a translation based on functional equivalence. The study contains a sketch of Arabic-Comorian and Comorian-Arabic lexicon of the Koran

Abstract:
According to Islamic tradition, one of the core characteristics of the Quran is that it is a polysemic text par excellence (ḥammāl dhū wujūh, bearer of several faces). To say that the Quranic text is polysemic implies that its various exegeses are as many possible readings of it, which implies in turn that its translations are also as many readings that complete each other. The accumulation of translations is thus another expression of the polysemy of the original text, even if the diversity of these translations does not match that of the exegeses. The thesis deals with the analysis of the Surah of Al-Ḥajj and it is based on two research axes:I. a study of the polysemy of the original text (Surah of Al-Ḥajj).II. A study of the polysemy of the final text (18 French translations) to show how translation reduces and/or modifies polysemy. The corpus of translations (18 translations) covers all the periods of the history of the translation of the Koran from 1647 until 2010 in order to see the evolution of the translation of the Koranic text.As a closed space that evolves independently from exegesis to more literality, the translations meet and complement each other, reflecting in their diversity with slight modification a large part of the polysemy united and concentrated in the original text but sporadic, sparse and Dispersed in the translations

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis presents Albert de Biberstein Kazimirski (1808–1887) through three prisms: the Polish exiled, the orientalist and the diplomat. The investigation is based on a multitude of sources gathered throughout ten countries in Europe. Kazimirski was a Polish patriot actor of the Uprising of 1830-31. He studied oriental languages in Poland, Germany and France. Dragoman of the French Embassy in Iran in 1839-40, he had a respectable career for thirty-six years of at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a Persian interpreter and an unofficial liaison officer with the Hôtel Lambert. He stood out during the Crimean War and the 1857 Peace Treaty between England and Persia. He was nominated as an officer of the Légion d’honneur and was consulted by the Czartoryski Princes. Author of the most popular French translation of the Koran and of the first Arabic -French dictionary, he has been considered as a prominent Arabist until today. However, he first was a Persian specialist, even if he always failed to obtain a chair at the Collège de France and at the École des langues orientales. The discovery of the life and work of this man is associated with the exploration of certain little-known aspects of the relations between the Eastern and Western parts of the world in the 19th century. Thus, this research offers the first comprehensive study of the Polish linguists of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs worldwide during the 19th century. In addition, a new synthesis of the history and specificities of Polish Orientalism in Europe is presented, allowing Kazimirski to be fully appreciated as a jewel of Franco-Polish Orientalism

The Coran in FrenchAndré Du Ryer (1580-1672), first translator of L'Alcoran de Mahomet (1647)The translation of a religious text has always been a matter of great difficulty. Hence, when it comes to Coran, it is all the more delicate mainly because it is considered as untranslatable. Its French translation in the 17th century, from Arabic, by André Du Ryer was an innovative and pioneering act when the only known translations in the West were the Latin ones. However, various prejudices on Islam prevented an objective understanding of this religion. Despite the fact that Du Ryer started his translation with a critical view of Islam, he highlighted the intellectual and spiritual values that Christians might draw from the reading of the Coran. His Alcoran de Mahomet represents a real hiatus with what had been left from the Middle age. Thanks to his project and his translation choices, André Du Ryer triggered dialogue by making the French of the classical times at the service of a complex and mysterious text which had to be known. Nevertheless, his work remains deeply tinged with humanitarian ideals.Through the concrete analysis of the linguistic methods of translation used by Du Ryer, this research aims to determine the translator’s motivations. The objective is also to show the new hidden image of Muslims, Islam, its prophet and its holy book. Finally, this study questions the neglect of this first translation of the Coran while it was a landmark in what was to become Orientalism

Abstract:
Starch is a highly disperse material with broad distributions of molecular sizes and geometries. Its dissolution in aqueous media is difficult to achieve and it tends to form aggregates through both inter- and intra-molecular interactions. Asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) is a suitable technique for the separation of such macromolecular and colloidal systems. A major advantage of AF4 is the direct correlation of translational diffusion coefficients with retention time and experimental parameters. In this article, the hydrodynamic and diffusive mobility of normal corn starch dissolved in 0.035 M KSCN was investigated by systematically varying the cross flow rates (applied forces); the translational diffusion coeffcients for normal corn starch in aqueous medium were found to range between 9.9 x 10-9 cm2/s and ~2.5 x 10-7 cm2/s with varying Fcr rates. Diffusion coefficient ranges shifted to higher diffusion co-efficient values at higher cross flow rates (applied forces). This behaviour, which may be attributed to the increased retention of very large starch molecules/particles at high Fcr rates, is further confirmed by the decrease in apparent molar mass and mass recovery values.

Abstract:
This thesis falls within the framework of the Language Toolkit project, born from the collaboration between the Romagna Chamber of Commerce and the Department of Interpretation and Translation of Forlì. This project allows students to put into practice what they have learned over the course of their studies by carrying out internships in local companies. Thanks to the collaboration with Cora Seeds Srl, the candidate localized part of the website www.coraseeds.com from Italian into Russian. The work is composed of four chapters. The first chapter briefly contextualizes the thesis project, introducing the company and describing the work to be carried out by the candidate. Furthermore, it analyzes the main points relating to the internationalization of companies, with particular focus to the linguistic and cultural skills necessary for this process. The second chapter is a theoretical study on the topic of localization. It includes a brief historical overview of its evolution, an analysis of the GILT model, and a presentation of the various types of localization with particular attention to that of websites. It then proceeds to illustrate the phases and the professional figures usually involved in the localization process and the software available to them. The third chapter is dedicated to the concepts of specialized languages and terminology. Moreover, the terminological work carried out in preparation for the translation work is presented in this section. The fourth and final chapter focuses on the actual translation work. The first part is dedicated to the analysis of the entire site, with particular attention to the text to be localized. Thereafter follows a commentary on the translation, where the types of intervention adopted during the translation phase are explained through concrete examples extrapolated directly from the source and the target texts.

Abstract:
Эта магистерская диссертация посвящена исследованию и сопоставлению переводческих трансформаций в рамках теорий Ж.-П. Вине и Ж. Дарбельне и Л. С. Бархударова с целью выявления особенностей каждой из них на фоне друг друга. Материалом сопоставительного анализа послужили монологи доктора Уотсона в первой главе рассказа А. К. Дойла «Скандал в Богемии».
This master’s thesis studies and compares translation transformations within the theories of J.-P. Vinay, J. Darbelnet and L. S. Barkhudarov in order to find out some of the peculiarities of said theories compared to one another. The analysis is based on comparing the translation of Dr. Watson’s monologues in the first chapter of the short story «A Scandal in Bohemia» by A. C. Doyle with the English source text.

Abstract:
With the chapter on Conan the Barbarian, the focus of this study shifts away from the inter-translation of this earlier medievalism towards the establishment of the mythopoeic visions that dominate medievalist discourse today. Robert E. Howard’s pulp-fiction heroes were born out of his experiences in the flint-hard mining towns of Depression-era Texas and out of his desire, perhaps, to escape them. This chapter will contextualize that work within a greater analysis of fantasy literature, focusing in particular on the inter-relationship of Howard’s creations with those of J. R. R. Tolkien, and with the genesis of new and immersive fan experiences that included comic conventions, costume-play and fantasy role-playing games.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the methodology of building up quantitative structure—property/activity relationships (QSPRs/QSARs)—by means of the CORAL software is described. The Monte Carlo method is the basis of this approach. Simplified Molecular Input-Line Entry System (SMILES) is used as the representation of the molecular structure. The conversion of SMILES into the molecular graph is available for QSPR/QSAR analysis using the CORAL software. The model for an endpoint is a mathematical function of the correlation weights for various features of the molecular structure. Hybrid models that are based on features extracted from both SMILES and a graph also can be built up by the CORAL software. The conceptually new ideas collected and revealed through the CORAL software are: (1) any QSPR/QSAR model is a random event; and (2) optimal descriptor can be a translator of eclectic information into an endpoint prediction.

Abstract:
The Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program facilitated my scientific growth in terms of the questions I can address; the tools, approaches, techniques and data to which I have access; and the diversity of intellectual and disciplinary expertise that I can tap. As a consequence, I am asking questions that cut across much larger spatial and especially temporal scales, and my research projects are more interdisciplinary, complex, and integrated. My ability to mentor students at all levels has been transformed by the variety of resources and opportunities afforded by the LTER program. One consequence is that these students are better prepared to become engaged globally. My role in the LTER program has required me to communicate scientific issues and findings to a broad audience. I have become more interested in the translation of science findings to public policy and practices to help conserve key functions of threatened ecosystems. My involvement with the LTER program has enabled me to forge a much larger circle of national and international collaborators to address questions that require a network of similar sites. The LTER construct has enabled me to broaden the scope of my research by expanding the interdisciplinary nature of my collaborations and the diversity of tools at my disposal. My involvement with the LTER program began in 2000 when I joined the Santa Barbara Coastal (SBC) site as an associate investigator, and it expanded in 2004 to include being the principal investigator of the newly established Moorea Coral Reef (MCR) site. I am privileged to continue to serve as principal investigator of MCR and as an associate investigator at SBC. My research interests center on ecological processes and feedbacks that drive the dynamics of populations and communities. Prior to my involvement in the LTER program, I conducted my research projects either alone or with a small group of like-minded collaborators to address such issues as regulation of (marine) animals with open populations or the effect of indirect interactions on coexistence of species (Figure 28.1). These projects taught me some of the limitations of “small science,” particularly when exacerbated by a lack of relevant long-term data.

Abstract:
The work of the American writer of the first half of the 19th century, Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849), has been studied and studied for about two hundred years, it was so deep, in many ways innovative. It is he who is considered the ancestor of the detective genre. However, in China, the first detective work translated into Chinese was not the works of Edgar Allan Poe, but of a later writer — Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930). The first translation of the story by E. A. Poe was made in 1905 by the writer and translator Zhou Zuoren. A surge of interest in the work of Edgar Allan Poe occurred in the 20–30s of the 20th century, both individual stories and entire collections of his works are published one after another. In the 40s, the interest of readers and publishers in the works of E. A. Poe gradually decreases. One of the most popular stories were The Tell-Tale Heart, which was published in different translations, and The Gold Bug.

Abstract:
The mathematical and numerical modeling of twin-screw polymer extruders is examined with respect to accuracy of results and validity of the simulation. A numerical model is developed incorporating the translation region, which is similar to a single-screw extruder channel, and the intermeshing, or nip, region. The numerical modeling is carried out for steady and time-dependent operation, considering various polymeric materials like polyethylene and corn meal. A range of design parameters and operating conditions are considered. The results are evaluated in terms of the expected physical behavior of the system and compared with experimental results available in the literature to determine the accuracy of the predictions. In many cases, only qualitative comparisons are possible since the operating conditions and design parameters are not explicitly known. However, the basic trends are as expected and good quantitative comparisons with experimental data is used to validate the model. Validated numerical models can extend the domain of relevant inputs for process design and optimization.

Abstract Laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) was used to measure velocity distributions in a table-top, co-rotating, self-wiping, twin-screw extruder having a Plexiglas barrel. Velocity measurements were made in the translational region of a 14 mm pitch forward conveying screw element. Axial (along the screw axis) and tangential (normal to the axis) velocity components were measured using a Newtonian (heavy corn syrup) and a pseudoplastic (CMC solution) fluid. The variation of velocity with screw rotation was similar for both fluids. The tangential velocity component for both fluids was higher closer to the screw flights and smaller in the middle of the screw channel. The axial velocity component was close to zero near the screw flights. Maximum values of the axial component were measured in the middle of the of the screw channel.
