Anderson, Leah Leone. Borges’s Creative Infidelities. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781501398315.

Full text
Abstract:
Using comparative analyses of source and target texts, Leone Anderson examines Jorge Luis Borges’s residual presence in his Spanish-language translations of works by James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and William Faulkner. Argentine writer and critic Jorge Luis Borges did not see translation as an inferior form of artistic production to be defined primarily in terms of loss or unfaithfulness, but rather as a vast and rich source for literary innovation and aesthetic inquiry. Borges’s Creative Infidelities: Translating Joyce, Woolf and Faulkner explores what this view may have implied for his translations of Anglophone Modernist fiction: the last two pages of James Joyce’s Ulysses; Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own and Orlando; and William Faulkner’s If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem [The Wild Palms]. Through full-length, manual comparisons of the English and Spanish texts, this book reveals the ways Borges inscribed his tastes, values and judgments–both about the individual works and about Modernist literature in general–onto his translations and how in doing so, he altered the identities of their characters, the ethical and rhetorical positioning of their narrators, their plots and even their genres. This book is driven by storytelling: the stories of each texts’ origin and reception in English; of how they ended up in Borges’s hands and of his translation processes; of how, through his translations, the texts’ narratives were made to tell new stories; and of the extraordinary legacies of Borges’s Spanish translations of Joyce, Woolf and Faulkner.

Guy, Adam. The nouveau roman and Writing in Britain After Modernism. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198850007.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book shows the centrality of the nouveau roman to the literary culture of postwar Britain. Emerging in the mid–late 1950s in France, the nouveau roman grouped together a range of writers committed to innovation in the novel, such as Michel Butor, Marguerite Duras, Robert Pinget, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Nathalie Sarraute, and Claude Simon. Transferred to a different national context, the nouveau roman became a focal point for debates in Britain about realism, modernism, and the end of empire. The nouveau roman and the Novel in Britain After Modernism draws on extensive research into archival and periodical sources in order to tell the story of the nouveau roman’s dissemination and reception in Britain. It also looks at postwar writers working in Britain so as to gauge the impact of the nouveau roman in novels of the 1960s and 1970s. Whether in translations of Nathalie Sarraute’s writing by Maria Jolas (one of the founders of the interwar little magazine transition), or in the conservative critiques of the nouveau roman levelled by the circle around C. P. Snow, the question of the legacies of European high modernism is always in view. But equally, for writers like Brian W. Aldiss, Christine Brooke-Rose, Eva Figes, B. S. Johnson, Alan Sheridan, Muriel Spark, and Denis Williams, the nouveau roman also provided the source of aesthetic innovations that could exceed the modernist account of the new. This book uncovers a neglected history of the postwar British literary field, with continuing relevance for contemporary innovative writing.

Abstract:
In the second half of the 19th century, European interest in research in western Asia increasingly expanded to the areas inhabited by the Kurds. From the modern perspective, these studies contributed not only to the study of still little-known regions, but also to the introduction of Kurdish Studies. Initially the focus of the research was almost entirely dictated by British, Russian and French colonial interests, which have been subjected to a critical reappraisal over the last three decades in accordance with post-colonial approaches and their importance redefined. It is for precisely this reason that those study trips which did not have a colonial background or did not pursue economic or power-political interests are particularly valuable. And that is also why nowadays autonomous and independently organised research, like that undertaken by Josef Wünsch (1842–1907), who worked in Prague and Vienna, can be seen as pioneering. Wünsch pursued universal research interests and produced both ethnographic and cartographic documentation. He drew up detailed cartographic material for the “Kurdish regions” and created a museum collection of everyday items. The results of his research on Mesopotamia were published in journals in Vienna and Prague, but he never produced a complete overview of his two years of research. Nowadays Wünsch's legacy is divided between various Austrian and Czech institutions. By bringing together the various partial legacies, in this collective volume all published and unpublished results of Josef Wünsch’s research will be edited, reports in Czech incorporated through commentated translations and then a critical re-evaluation undertaken. All of this will be preceded by an introductory chapter on Austrian contributions to the development of Kurdish Studies from the late 19th century on.
