Abstract:
Chinese and Vietnamese have the same isolated language; that is, the words are not delimited by spaces. In machine translation, word segmentation is often done first when translating from Chinese or Vietnamese into different languages (typically English) and vice versa. However, it is a matter for consideration that words may or may not be segmented when translating between two languages in which spaces are not used between words, such as Chinese and Vietnamese. Since Chinese-Vietnamese is a low-resource language pair, the sparse data problem is evident in the translation system of this language pair. Therefore, while translating, whether it should be segmented or not becomes more important. In this paper, we propose a new method for translating Chinese to Vietnamese based on a combination of the advantages of character level and word level translation. In addition, a hybrid approach that combines statistics and rules is used to translate on the word level. And at the character level, a statistical translation is used. The experimental results showed that our method improved the performance of machine translation over that of character or word level translation.

Abstract:
Translation of English passive constructions into Vietnamese has been of interest to scholars and researchers worldwide. However, not much research has been done into translation equivalence of the English passives in Vietnamese. This paper aims to explore into the translation equivalence of English passive constructions in Vietnamese in literary discourse. To reach this aim, data were collected from classic works of American and English literature and their translations in Vietnamese. The data were further analysed and classified, applying Widdowson’s (1979) trichotomy of translation equivalence. The research findings show five strategies for translating the English passives into Vietnamese with this order of frequency: activization, passivization, ergativization, adjectivalization, and copularization, and the translation equivalence includes both structural and semantic. The paper also attempts to explain the reasons behind the preference of activization strategy.

It also compares these with their modern Mandarin Chinese translations. Based on the results, the article analyzes the methods of translating Vietnamese pronominal nouns into Mandarin Chinese and proposes recommendations and solutions based on translation options presented by Mona Baker.

Analyzing strategies in the English-Vietnamese translation is an important language component to be learned by English language learners, especially in the English-Vietnamese (E-V) translation of foreign affairs texts. In Investigating the typical strategies employed in translating diplomatic documents from English into Vietnamese, the study provides effective ways for conveying the meaning of diplomatic texts from English into Vietnamese. The primary data for analysis in this study are mostly sourced from the English diplomatic documents of Dong Nai Department of External Relations, which are classified into four categories. Additionally, the Vietnamese-translated versions of these writings are also included. The underlying framework for interpreting the data is based on the fundamental principle of equivalence, which involves the use of translation procedures by learners. The translation process involves various strategies that can be categorized into different types in the study. In addition, the common errors made by learners in their tasks are examined in the field of the grammatical structures of E-V translations of foreign affairs texts as translation strategies, and some recommendations of appropriate diplomatic text translation strategies for learners are also proposed in the paper.

Abstract:
The article for the first time explores the translation of the ‟evangelical text” of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel ‟Crime and Punishment” into Vietnamese. The ‟evangelical text” refers to the New Testament quotations, for the first time both in the writer’s work and in the Russian literature of the 19th century as a whole, widely used by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Threeauthoritative translations by Trương Định Cư (1972), Lý Quốc Sinh (1973), Cao Xuân Hạo (1982-1983) are involved. The translation of the Bible into Vietnamese used by translators and involved in the liturgical practice of the Vietnamese Orthodox Church, has been revealed. On the basis of a continuous text sample of the «evangelical text» three translations were compared with the original and reverse translations, followed by an analytical commentary. The subject of the article is a monologue of «drunken» Semyon Marmeladov in the tavern (p. 1, ch. 2), saturated with New Testament quotations, and an evangelical scene about raised Lazarus (p. 4, ch. 4). It is concluded that when translating the «evangelical text» of the novel, the Vietnamese translators experienced serious difficulties due to ignorance of Russian Orthodoxy, which is still perceived in Vietnam to this day as a kind of exotic. Some specific refinements to existing translations are proposed.

This study examines some most common strategies for the Vietnamese translation of English passive voice such as “The use of markers ‘được’/‘bị’”, “Change to active”, “Paraphrasing” in order to find out the frequency and the rules for the use of those strategies by collecting and analyzing the data from the English and Vietnamese versions of a novel named “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” and a book named “A Brief History of Time”. And the findings of this study disapproves the view that Vietnamese active sentences are the dominant choice for translating English passive voice since its results indicate that English It-clefts or English agentless passive sentences where the agent of the action is unclear or concerned with generalization rather than specific individuals have a high tendency of being translated into active structures in Vietnamese while using a marker like 'được' or 'bị' and subject-less active sentences are the primary ways for translating other kinds of English agentless passive sentences into Vietnamese. Besides, the results of the research also indicate that the use of markers 'được'/'bị' is frequently applied to translate agent-included passives, but the position of the agent in Vietnamese sentences varies according to its features.

This paper is an attempt to raise translators’ awareness about English collocations and their significance in translation. It lends supports from the Lexical Approach initiated by Michael Lewis [9-11] and discusses the significance of lexical collocations in English. The paper then adopts Baker's approach [1] to translation equivalence and equivalence above word level to address the issue of lexical collocations in translation with contrastive view. It presents some difficulties translating English marked collocations, culture-specific and register-specific collocations into Vietnamese and offers their suggested equivalents in Vietnamese as possible solutions to deal with these difficulties.

The article discusses typical semantic and pragmatic implementations of the particle "already" and the means of the Vietnamese language used in practice to convey the corresponding meanings. The relevance of the research is determined by its involvement in the problems of translating Russian particles as communicative and pragmatic signs into foreign languages. The object of the study is the particle "already". The subject of the research is syntagmatic, semantic and pragmatic features of this lexeme, as well as ways and means of translating statements from "already" into Vietnamese. The research material was M. A. Bulgakov's novel "The Master and Margarita" and the text of its translation into Vietnamese. The purpose of the work is to establish the range of types of use of the particle "already" presented in the text of the work under consideration, as well as to determine the features of ways to translate statements with this particle into Vietnamese. The paper uses a descriptive method, as well as elements of comparative and quantitative analysis. The novelty of the study is determined by the fact that for the first time the question of the functioning of the particle "already" and its Vietnamese analogues is considered on the material of the named novel by M. A. Bulgakov. It is established that when translating statements with the particle "already", a number of relevant Vietnamese words and service combinations are used, of which the most popular means of direct translation is đã, with non-predicative components, transmitting an assessment according to the parameters ‘much’, ‘little’, ‘long’, ‘late’, and with predicative components, the values are ‘change in the situation’, ‘expectation’ and ‘earlier than expected'. It is shown that the specifics of the semantic and functional capabilities of the Russian "already" and the service units of the Vietnamese language do not always allow for an adequate translation, and therefore they cannot be considered completely equivalent. The results of the study can be taken into account both in the study of other Russian particles, including in the comparative aspect, and in lexicographic practice.

The research was conducted to investigate the use of the three most common classifiers cái, con, người, and figure out the patterns of how to use them when English noun phrases are translated into Vietnamese. To do this, a corpus has been built from the two bestselling literary works The Great Gatsby and Tuesday with Morrie in the English version accompanied by the Vietnamese translated version. The data collected were analyzed in terms of counting numbers of occurrences, calculating percentages and frequency to conclude what classifier among the three is the most frequently used. The findings of this research can be summarized as follow: first, cái is a classifier for inanimate objects, whereas con and người are used with animate ones; however, there is one exception that emerges during the research, which is the classifier con followed by inanimate nouns. Second, from a typical structure of CL + N, formulae are given for the translation of each classifier in specific cases. Finally, double and triple classifiers are chronologically formed by these three classifiers with suggested formulae for Vietnamese translation. The findings aim to support Vietnamese learners using classifiers correctly when translating English noun phrases into Vietnamese noun phrases.

Pragmatic markers, considered as one of the best-known sources of troubles in translation, have received considerable attention from researchers. This study therefore, offers a contrastive analysis of “well” and “so” occurring in an extract of the film Finding Nemo and their translation in the Vietnamese dubbed and subtitled versions. The occurrences of "well and "so" in the data were analyzed according to a functional classification framework and compared with their translation equivalents by contrastive analysis (CA) to find out the translation strategies applied and to evaluate translation effectiveness. The findings reveal that "well" tendsto be omitted more often than "so" in the Vietnamese translations while "so" appears to be the easier item whose functions are usually well captured by single-word equivalents. The study also shows how carefulanalysis may help the translators achieve effective and natural translation. Implications for EFL teaching and translating tasks as well as suggestions for further research are also discussed.

The translation of idioms poses significant challenges, particularly when cultural nuances and linguistic intricacies are involved. As an important cultural element of every language, idioms related to animals are not only one of the most interesting linguistic phenomena but also of largest concern among language translators regardless of the language pair translated. This paper explores the obstacles encountered in translating English-Vietnamese idioms containing animal elements, and equivalent translation strategies in addressing these hurdles. By examining the cultural, semantic, and syntactic disparities between the source and target languages, this study identifies the complexities inherent in rendering idiomatic expressions accurately. Additionally, the paper delves into four translation strategies, proposed by Baker (1992): (i) Using an idiom of similar meaning and form; (ii) Using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form; (iii) Translating by paraphrase; and (iv) Translating by omission, in overcoming the challenges posed by idiomatic expressions with animal elements. Through a comprehensive analysis of real-world examples in English and Vietnamese idioms, this research provides insights into the complexities of idiomatic translation and offers practical recommendations for translators seeking to improve the accuracy and cultural relevance of translated content.

In Vietnamese, rồi can help translators choose appropriate English tenses to translate Vietnamese sentences into English. With this study, the researcher wants to indicate the influence of rồi in four Vietnamese works’ sentences on their translators’ selection for appropriate English tenses to have semantically equivalent translations. The study refers to six tenses of simple present (a), simple past (b), present perfect (c), past perfect (d), simple future (e), and near future (f). These sentences were translated into English with (a) if rồi denotes the emphasis on the reality of the event. (b), (c), and (d) are preferred when rồi implies the event that happened in the past. However, using (e) and (f) is not dependent upon the occurrence of rồi because this word does need combination with other words or phrases to denote the meaning of the future. Therefore, understanding the influence of rồi in Vietnamese in different contexts helps Vietnamese people learning English know how to choose the appropriate English tenses when translating Vietnamese sentences containing it into English.

Apostrophes have a particular meaning in the system of speech styles of any language and, to a certain extent, they determine the communicative process. This article focuses on contrasting between forms of apostrophe in Russian and Vietnamese. On the basis of the identified similarities and differences as well as examples from translated literary works, the article analyzes the characteristics of translating different forms of Russian addressing into Vietnamese, taking into account the communicative situations and the features of expressions to address in the Vietnamese language. It concludes that transcription / transliteration is the most common way of translating Russian apostrophes into Vietnamese.

The study aimed to analyze the translation learning needs of English major students at Hung Vuong Universityand inform some implications of pedagogy to address their needs. To this end, 75 Vietnamese students, who at the time of the study were studying English as their major, were subjected to a survey questionnaire to identify their problems, abilities, practices and needs in learning translations. Findings showed that students have a strong need to improve their language proficiency, translation strategies, training in translating different text types and have more extra practice in translation. Results were discussed and some implications were presented.

Exploring the shift in meanings of translating prepositions from English to Vietnamese, the study, besides analyzing the cases of the changes in meanings of prepositions, aims to discuss a general variety of meanings of English prepositions. The methods of analysis and synthesis of theories from the available data on prepositions as well as the methods of classifying and systematizing prepositions were applied to English-Vietnamese translation. From the collected data, this study has revealed 6 cases of the shift in meanings of prepositions and the characteristics of multiple meanings of prepositions. In the course of translation, contextual meanings are used in order to convey the meanings appropriately in the Vietnamese style. The research paper can make some contribution to the teaching of translation and make it a reference material for English learners.

The process of translating nomenclature concepts is quite complicated, which prompts the translator to find realias in their native language. Accurate translation and finding proper equivalents require standardization and unification of the systems of nomenclature concepts of military terms in the original and target languages. An attempt is made to standardize and explain the rules of utilization and translation of the system of military ranks based on their semantic peculiarities in the Russian and Vietnamese languages. The author makes brief notes on the translation of military ranks and spoken forms of military greetings. Despite the sufficient coverage of the topic of semantic peculiarities of terminology, it retains relevant. The question of translating military ranks along with other nomenclature terms in the Vietnamese language, raises some questions. The author provides a general overview of the system of military ranks, determines similarities and differences, and attempts to develop a unified approach towards translation of these nomenclature concepts in the original and target languages. The article employs the comparative and descriptive methods of research. The acquired results demonstrate that the question of translation equivalence should be explored only through comparative analysis. The presented materials can be applied in lexicography and translation practice.

The data generated by this method is a statistic showing the frequency of each translation strategy applied. From studying the application of CSI translation strategies, the article have been explored to find out the handling of cultural issues in translation, whether the translators are able to convey culture-specific items from the original to the translation English, and methods to optimize CSI translation. This article takes the case of the Vietnamese Cao Dai religion to examine how Asian religious leaders and translators, in a context of colonial modernity, invested a European language with their own cosmologies and discourses, building both a national identity and an alternative spiritual universalism. Studies of translation in colonial contexts have tended to focus on the processes and impact of translating European texts and ideas into the languages of the colonized. This article discusses the inverse process, examining how Caodai textual production used French spiritist language and tropes to occult its Chinese roots, translating Daoist cosmology into a universalist and anti-colonial spiritual discourse rooted in Vietnamese nationalism. These shifts are examined through a close examination of translingual practices in the production and translation of the core esoteric scripture of Caodaism, theĐại Thừa Chơn Giáo 大乘真教(The True Teachings of the Great Vehicle), rendered in its 1950 Vietnamese-French edition asThe Bible of the Great Cycle of Esotericism.This study demonstrates how colonial religious institutions and networks of circulation in Asia stimulate the emergence of new movements and textual practices that mimic, invert, jumble, and transcend the cosmologies of both the Chinese imperium and the European colonial regime.

As the author has observed, "can" and its English alternative modal verbs like "could", "may" or "might" are usually translated into Vietnamese under a general word: "có thể". However, those words do express not only the subject's ability or probability of happening of an event but also other meanings such as permission or general characteristics (Thomson and Martinet, 1986; Alexander, 1990; Eastwood, 1994). The question is that how we can grasp the tendencies of translating the modal verb "can" and its alternatives in specific situations into Vietnamese and vice versa without causing ambiguities or negative effects on target readers. The Bahnar, a minority ethnic group in Vietnam with ancient roots, hold a language of deep cultural and historical significance. The government is prioritizing the preservation and dissemination of Bahnar language through online availability and cross-generational communication. Recent AI advances, including Neural Machine Translation (NMT), have transformed translation with improved accuracy and fluency, fostering language revitalization through learning, communication, and documentation. In particular, NMT enhances accessibility for Bahnar language speakers, making information and content more available. However, translating Vietnamese to Bahnar language faces practical hurdles due to resource limitations, particularly in the case of Bahnar language as an extremely low-resource language. These challenges encompass data scarcity, vocabulary constraints, and a lack of fine-tuning data. To address these, we propose transfer learning from selected pre-trained models to optimize translation quality and computational efficiency, capitalizing on linguistic similarities between Vietnamese and Bahnar language. Concurrently, we apply tailored augmentation strategies to adapt machine translation for the Vietnamese-Bahnar language context. Our approach is validated through superior results on bilingual Vietnamese-Bahnar language datasets when compared to baseline models. By tackling translation challenges, we help revitalize Bahnar language, ensuring information flows freely and the language thrives.

Being colonized by France, Cocochina (the South of Vietnam) was the region where Western literature was introduced into earlier than the North. Truong Minh Ky was considered the first translator of Western literature in Vietnam. His earliest works of translation appeared in 1884. By the early 20th century, introduced to Vietnamese readers were Western literary works not only of French origin but also of British, American and Russian origins; not only poetry, prose but also drama. In the late 19th century, many writers such as Truong Vinh Ky, Huynh Tinh Cua were interested in Chinese literature. In the first decade of the 20th century, a wide variety of Chinese novels were translated into Vietnamese, forming a strong movement of translating "truyen Tau” (Chinese fictions). The remarkable characteristics of the translation of Western literature in Cochinchina were as follows - The newspapers and magazines in “Quoc Ngu” (Vietnamese language written in Latin characters) where the first works of translation were published played very important role. - The translators were greatly diverse, coming from different social and cultural backgrounds. - More translation was made on prose. Novels of martial arts, historical stories, novels of heroic deeds attracted the attention of the translators and the publishers. Therefore, they were translated much more than romance novels were, because of their compatibility with popular audience. - By translating the works of Western literature, the writers tried to express new concepts of humanism, such as women rights, or gender issues. Translated literature in Cocochina in the late 19th and early 20th centuries reflects a paradox: Western influences started to leave their marks but the Chinese influence was still strongly engraved. However, this was a remarkable step in the journey of modernization of national literature. Through these early translated works, new literary genres were introduced and Vietnamese readers gradually became familiar with them. Translation experiences were the first steps for Cocochina writers to achieve thorough understanding, to learn Western writing techniques and styles, which helped them become the pioneers of new literature in Vietnam.

It is clear from my account that in translating An Introduction to Functional Grammar, Second Edition, the translator may experience many daunting problems, among which the problems of translating technical terms and long and heavily loaded nominal groups seem to be the toughest. It is also clear from my account that systemic functional linguistics is highly relevant to translation theory and translation practice. It can stand to benefit the translator from analysis of the source text, to discussion of translation problems, to explanation for establishment of points of equivalence between the choices in the target text and those in the source text, and to synthesis of the target text.

English Language programs that seek to offer learners adequate English skills and translate strategies to conduct in multilingual environments include translation and interpretation. However, translating effectively is not a simple task because English language skills are not the only factor to consider; other factors also play a role. Owing to their poor language proficiency and comprehension of translation methods, many HUFI English-majored students have no experience with translation and interpretation. Therefore, this paper looked at how HUFI English-majored students approach translation and interpretation tasks and how successful those translated versions are in relation to the original Vietnamese documents. The results showed many incorrect translated items caused by “word-by-word” translation or meta-phrase technique and the influence of the Vietnamese language on two translated texts and talks from ten participants. Teachers of translation and interpretation subjects and students will get advice on improving the curriculum and teaching methods.

The experimental result of this paper will be the basis for word segmentation improvement in future research which increase machine translation performance. We surveyed on two experiments: word segmentation (WS) and word un-segmentation (WUS) on the corpus of 8,000 and 12,000 sentence pairs. Confusion due to ambiguity in tenses and aspects while translating from English into Vietnamese is still a common problem to translators. There are several causes to this problem, but the main cause is the difference in viewing tense and aspect notions in the two languages by researchers or scholars. The existence of tense and aspect identities in English clauses or sentences is a matter of fact whereas in Vietnamese they are the topic of controversy among linguists and educators. This article investigates some of the linguistic means that were employed to translate English tenses and aspects in narrative mode into Vietnamese by three well-known translators, namely Mặc Đỗ, Hoàng Cường and Trịnh Lữ. The results of the study prove the fact that though tenses and aspects are not always recognized in the Vietnamese language, they can be translated from the English language via the use of temporal adverbials, aspectual markers or situation types of Vietnamese verbs.

No validated instrument is available for assessing the evidence-based practice capacity of Vietnamese health professionals. This study aimed to translate and validate the Health Sciences Evidence-Based Practice questionnaire (HS-EBP) from English to Vietnamese and ascertain its psychometric properties. Data were collected from two obstetric hospitals in Vietnam. Participants: A total of 343 midwives were randomly selected. The HS-EBP questionnaire was translated by a group of bilingual experts into Vietnamese (HS-EBP-V). Content validity was assessed by two experts. Internal consistency and test–retest reliabilities were assessed using Cronbach’s α and intraclass correlation (ICC), respectively. Construct validity was assessed using the contrasted groups approach. As a result, the content validity index of the HS-EBP-V reached 1.0. For the individual subscales, Cronbach’s α was 0.92–0.97 and ICC was between 0.45 and 0.66. The validity of the contrasted-groups approach showed discrimination by a significant difference in the subscale scores among diploma holders compared with bachelor’s degree holders (p < 0.001). The validation of the HS-EBP questionnaire indicated satisfactory psychometric properties. The results indicate that the HS-EBP is a reliable and valid instrument which assesses the competencies of as well as facilitators of and barriers to the five steps of EBP among midwives. The HS-EBP-V was deemed a reliable and validated tool for assessing the competency and application of EBP among Vietnamese healthcare professionals.

Legal translation, also defined as the rendering of legal texts from the source language (SL) into the target language (Cao, 2007), is deemed as one of the most rigorous translation fields due to the distinctive, culture-specific and culture-sensitive features of legal language in different law areas (Alcaraz & Hughes, 2014). Undeniably, such wide divergence has imposed great difficulties on learners and practitioners, which attracted attention from educators and scholars for the last decade. Yet, there still exists a limited number of research on this issue. Therefore, the focal aim of the present study is to investigate relevant major factors of English-majored learners’ obstacles in the process of translating legal texts between English and Vietnamese at Hanoi Law University. A mixed-method study with the utilization of survey-questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and classroom observation was employed to collect data. The results revealed the main challenges concerning linguistic aspects of legal English language, the non-equivalent legal systems and cultures, and the students’ legal background knowledge. Such findings are expected to be beneficial for both teachers and learners when it comes to learning and teaching legal translation.

Thus, this study was conducted to investigate Vietnamese English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) students’ habits of dictionary consultation in ESP translation. The data were collected during a three-week period among 75 third-year EFL students from three classes at University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS), Vietnam National University (VNU) by a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods (i.e. survey questionnaires with a combination of close-ended and open-ended questions). The research highlighted the students’ positive attitudes towards dictionary use together with a high level of its frequency in translating ESP texts, their definite preference for dictionary applications for mobile phones and bilingual dictionaries as well as their prioritized lookups such as equivalents, examples, equivalent usage, and word definitions. In addition, it revealed that the students were confident in their capability of exploiting the dictionaries in ESP translation and thus had little desire for teachers’ assistance and guidance.</em></p>

AbstractAlthough there are now several instruments available to measure social capital in a quantitative manner, very few of them have been validated, and no published study has examined respondents' interpretation of the meaning of the questions. This article represents one of the first attempts to measure the validity of a quantitative social capital instrument. Young Lives is a study that includes quantitative measures of caregivers' social capital using the Short Adapted Social Capital Assessment Tool (Short A-SCAT). Vietnamese respondents' interpretations of questions on social capital were compared to the original intended meaning of the questions and to fieldworkers' interpretations. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with two interpreters who were involved in translating the original questionnaire from English to Vietnamese, two supervisors and six interviewers. In-depth interviews were conducted with 24 female caregivers similar to the original respondents. Key concepts in social capital, like trust and sense of belonging, were interpreted similarly by all actors. Support was perceived narrowly by caregivers (limited to money and goods). Most problems arose from changes originating from translation from English to Vietnamese and by the changing nature of local political structures and how one refers to them. Overall validity appeared fairly high with a "correct interpretation" rate of 77 percent. There is now a valid tool for quickly and cheaply assessing social capital in a quantitative manner in Vietnam.

This study examines the Conceptual Metaphor Theory from an innovative perspective: translatability and translation strategy. The experiment recruited 239 undergraduate students of different translation training to evaluate the translatability of twelve sentences of different metaphor types before translating them into Vietnamese. Additionally, this study examines how students deal with metaphorical mapping images as well as grammatical and lexical refining attempts. The factorial ANOVA results (p=.02) indicate that the effect of metaphor types on translatability levels is conditional on translation training levels, despite the fact that the main effect is on metaphor types, not translation skill. Besides, twelve in-depth strategies to deal with the source sentences are identified, establishing a new model for metaphorical translation strategy. Chi-square analysis reveals associations between translation training levels and strategies (p<.01); and between metaphor types and strategies (p<.01). This study argues for the possibility that translation could be considered among conceptual metaphor's cognitive mechanisms.

Cytochrome P450 enzymes play an important role in phase I drug metabolism, accounting for approximately 75% of the enzymatic processes. We investigated the allele and phenotypic distributions of five important CYP genes (CYP2B6, CYP3A5, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2D6) in the Vietnamese population by using Stargazer and the PharmCAT tool to call star alleles and translating them into phenotypes based on the available dataset of PharmGKB. We compared our computational analysis of the Vietnamese distributions with those of East Asia, Europe, America and other super populations, as well as with previous experimental research. The allele frequencies and phenotypic distributions of the five important CYP genes in the Vietnamese population are similar to those in East Asia while significantly different from other populations. In silico analysis also provided consistent results with previous experimental studies. In addition, the resultant data from our research contributes to the database of genetic variations in pharmacogenetics and constructs the fundamentals for future basic and applied research.

This research utilizes the Metaphor Identification Procedure of the Pragglejaz Group (2007), in conjunction with descriptive approaches, statistical analysis, and classification strategies, to scrutinize the conceptual metaphor "Media is Fire" and its underlying metaphors. A total of 193 metaphorical expressions from media discourse are examined (113 in Vietnamese and 80 in English), revealing three primary cognitive models: "Media is Heat," " The ability to transmit the energy of Media is the ability to transmit energy of Fire," and "Media is Burning," along with the mapping mechanism from the source domain to the target domain. Furthermore, this research emphasizes the similarities and differences in the conceptualization of fire-related metaphors between the two languages. The findings of this study offer valuable insights for teaching, learning, and translating conceptual metaphors, thereby enhancing cross-cultural communication skills for Vietnamese English learners."

Forms of communication that were thought to be one-way, such as television and book, becoming interactive along with the growth of digital, mobile devices, Internet, computers. Developed technology and updated media have created more chances for interactive communication throughout social classes, media, disciplines, cultures, places and also times. Pedagogically, writing has been increasingly perceived as inherently social and interactive. It involves more than just creating, organizing, translating ideas into texts. Basically, each act of writing is an interactive phase, ideally manifesting as intertextuality, with a particular academic establishment or discipline represented by its specific foundations, problems, and precursors. For those motivations, we have researched the application of interactive viewpoints into teaching Vietnamese writing for foreign students. Within this, we clarify the concept of interactive writing, propose techniques for teaching, criteria for assessing the interactive Vietnamese writing skills of foreign students, to apply in the teaching process and in testing and assessing activities. The results also have the prospects for developing interactive Vietnamese writing textbooks for foreigners as well as criteria for assessing the interactive Vietnamese writing competency tests.

End-to-end neural machine translation does not require us to have specialized knowledge of investigated language pairs in building an effective system. On the other hand, feature engineering proves to be vital in other artificial intelligence fields, such as speech recognition and computer vision. Inspired by works in those fields, in this paper, we propose a novel feature-based translation model by modifying the state-of-the-art transformer model. Specifically, the encoder of the modified transformer model takes input combinations of linguistic features comprising of lemma, dependency label, part-of-speech tag, and morphological label instead of source words. The experiment results for the Russian-Vietnamese language pair show that the proposed feature-based transformer model improves over the strongest baseline transformer translation model by impressive 4.83 BLEU. In addition, experiment analysis reveals that human judgment on the translation results strongly confirms machine judgment. Our model could be useful in building translation systems translating from a highly inflectional language into a noninflectional language.

Введение. Несмотря на то, что вьетнамская литература в целом не получила широкого международного признания, некоторые произведения писателей Вьетнама широко известны читателям по всему миру. Одним из таких общепризнанных литературных произведений является сказочная повесть То Хоая «Dế mèn phiêu lưu ký», переведенная на множество языков, в том числе на русский и английский. Цель – выявление особенностей перевода сказки То Хоая «Dế mèn phiêu lưu ký» на русский и английский языки. Материал и методы. Материалами исследования послужил оригинальный текст сказочной повести То Хоая «Dế mèn phiêu lưu ký» и его русско- и англоязычный переводы. В качестве методов исследования применялись общенаучные методы анализа, синтеза и обобщения, а также частнонаучные методы описания и сопоставления, наряду с методом стилистического анализа текста. Результаты и обсуждение. Переводы сказочной повести «Dế mèn phiêu lưu ký» на русский и английский языки могут служить иллюстрацией зависимости конечного результата перевода художественного текста от задач, решаемых переводчиками. Сопоставительный анализ ряда аспектов русской и английской версий исходного текста (перевод имен собственных, описание персонажей, передача элементов национальной культуры и быта, воспроизведение фольклорной составляющей) позволяет говорить о том, что русский переводчик при помощи ряда приемов персонифицирует персонажей, распространяет их описания, иногда домысливая за автором детали портретов и ситуаций. Тенденция к амплификации текста нарушается лишь в случае «подцензурных» фрагментов, смягченных с учетом его адресата. Еще одним решением переводчика является бережный перенос в русский текст, а иногда и намеренное усиление вьетнамского национального колорита, обусловленного вкраплениями в текст повести фольклорных фрагментов и безэквива лентной лексики. Английский перевод, в отличие от русского, строго следует за оригиналом и иногда излишне схематичен. Заключение. Сравнение русской и английских версий сказочной повести То Хоая «Dế mèn phiêu lưu ký» свидетельствует о принципиально различных стратегиях русского и английского переводчиков. Автор английского перевода строго следует за вьетнамским текстом или несколько его упрощает, доместицирует элементы национальной культуры. Русский переводчик нередко прибегает к амплификациям оригинала и подчеркивает вьетнамский колорит сказочной повести. Introduction. Though not being widely known abroad, Vietnamese literature managed to produce some texts enjoying vast popularity all around the world. One of such international masterpieces is “Dế mèn phiêu lưu ký” by To Hoai, which has been regarded as a classic children’s novel through seven decades. Up to now, “Dế mèn phiêu lưu ký” has been translated into more than 40 world languages including Russian and English. The book’s plot revolves around the adventures of a cricket in a world of animals and people, metaphorically introducing the ideas of good and evil, war and peace, ideals and life’s purpose in an insightful way. Aim and objectives. The purpose of the research is to analyze specific features of Russian and English versions of “Dế mèn phiêu lưu ký” by To Hoai. Material and methods. The research is based on 3 text sources: the Vietnamese original text of “Dế mèn phiêu lưu ký” by To Hoai, and its two versions: “Приключения кузнечика Мена” (transl. M. N. Tkachiov) and “Adventures of a Cricket” (transl. Dang Te Binh). The methods applied are general scientific (observation and description) and linguistic (text analysis, comparative analysis). Results and discussion. English and Russian versions of “Dế mèn phiêu lưu ký” may serve as an example of interdependence of the result of translation process and translator’s aims and objectives. Comparison of several aspects of the Russian and the English versions of the literary text (translation of proper names, description techniques, rendering of realia, transferring of folklore element) makes evident different translation techniques while translating the Vietnamese source text into the two languages. While the Russian interpreter emphasizes human features in animal characters and mainly amplifies description, having in mind younger audience, Dang Te Binh sticks to the Vietnamese original. One more distinctive feature widening the gap between the Russian and the English versions is visible intention of the Russian interpreter to emphasize Vietnamese flavor of the original text by deliberate foreignization of realia, preserving and even amplifying inserts of folk material. In this aspect, the English version, too, closely follows the Vietnamese text. Conclusion. Сomparative analysis of the two versions of To Hoai’s “Dế mèn phiêu lưu ký” shows two polar strategies of the Russian and the English interpreters. While Dang Te Binh’s version tends to stick to the source text and (in several utter cases) even simplifies it, the Russian interpreter chooses to amplify the Vietnamese text and underlines its ethnic affiliation.

The empirical study presented in this article aims to determine some of the linguistic and cultural elements that can influence the production process and the reception of humour and to verify the applicability of the General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH) to humorous literary translation. 60 Vietnamese and 60 Italian participants had to read and rate the level of humorousness of excerpts taken from the Vietnamese novel Số Đỏ (Vũ Trọng Phụng, 1936) and its correspondent Italian translation (Il gioco indiscreto di Xuan, 2012). By comparing their feedback, it was possible to observe that one is more likely to appreciate humour when one is not part of the categories subject to ridicule/irony/satire; and that a direct contact with the original language and culture constitutes an important role in humour understanding and appreciating. Also, a comparison between the rating that the Italian participants assigned to the official Italian translation and an alternative version allowed us to analyze the role of Language Knowledge Resource (GTVH). According to the Italian participants, although the two versions of the translation, which share the first five levels of Knowledge Resources, were remarkably similar (as predicted by the GTVH), they were dissimilar in terms of humour and in readers' preferences. I therefore argue that, although the GTVH is a useful tool for analyzing and verifying the similarity between the source and target text, it has proved to be impractical and not always reliable if we want to use it as a parameter of the translation of literary humorous texts.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate syntactic and semantic features of English idioms. The data of this study were 6,500 English idioms collected from Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, the eighth edition (OALD8) and described quantitatively and qualitatively. The data were analyzed and presented with statistics, percentages, and content analysis. The findings demonstrated syntactic and semantic features of English idioms. Syntactically, English idioms were categorized into nominal, verbal, adjectival, adverbial, prepositional, conjunctional and interjectional idioms. Semantically, the findings showed the meanings of idiomatic variants, idioms used as slang, humorous idioms, idioms with proper names, idioms used in various fields, idioms used formally and informally, and so forth. The results of this study are beneficial to teachers of English, foreign language students as well as translators who have difficulty in identifying English idioms and translating them into Vietnamese. In addition, the study gives some implications for teaching and learning English idioms in Vietnamese contexts.

Background Migrants are underrepresented in population health surveys. Offering translated survey instruments has been shown to increase migrant representation. While ‘team translation’ represents current best practice, there are relatively few published examples describing how it has been implemented. The purpose of this paper is to document the process, results and lessons from a project to translate an English-language sexual health and blood-borne virus survey into Khmer, Karen, Vietnamese and Traditional Chinese. Methods The approach to translation was based on the TRAPD (Translation, Review, Adjudication, Pretesting, and Documentation) model. The English-language survey was sent to two accredited, independent translators. At least one bilingual person was chosen to review and compare the translations and preferred translations were selected through consensus. Agreed translations were pretested with small samples of individuals fluent in the survey language and further revisions made. Results Of the 51 survey questions, only nine resulted in identical independent translations in at least one language. Material differences between the translations related to: (1) the translation of technical terms and medical terminology (e.g. HIV); (2) variations in dialect; and (3) differences in cultural understandings of survey concepts (e.g. committed relationships). Conclusion Survey translation is time-consuming and costly and, as a result, deviations from TRAPD ‘best practice’ occurred. It is not possible to determine whether closer adherence to TRAPD ‘best practice’ would have improved the quality of the resulting translations. However, our study does demonstrate that even adaptations of the TRAPD method can identify issues that may not have been apparent had non-team-based or single-round translation approaches been adopted. Given the dearth of clear empirical evidence about the most accurate and feasible method of undertaking translations, we encourage future researchers to follow our example of making translation data publicly available to enhance transparency and enable critical appraisal.

This article examines the strategy of literary spatialization employed by colonial subjects to imaginatively engage with colonial civilizing projects. It analyzes twelve adventure stories written between the 1910s and 1920s by colonial Vietnamese reformed scholars, whose lives were impacted by the pan-Asian reform movements that swept Japan, China, and Vietnam between the 1860s and 1900s. They reflected their experiences with Enlightened civilization as they were pushing for vernacularization and modernization through translating the Chinese transculturation of Japanese texts into Latin-basedquốc ngữscript while constructing a national literature. Adventure tales and travelogues were considered suitable for aspiring writers to translatively imitate Western literature as presented in Chinese translation of Japanese texts. The authors negotiated with the French version of Enlightened Civilization by employing two East Asian literary tropes: the dangerous but exciting Rivers-and-Lakes World, where the protagonist ventures to search forvăn minh, and the peaceful and other-worldly Peach Blossom Spring utopia, where the true qualities ofvăn minhare realized. These stories reveal colonial subjects’ admiration for and anxiety regarding the Frenchmission civilisatrice, and their literary efforts to imagine a Vietnamesevăn minhthat would both impress and surpass the original models.

The aim of this study is to adapt the nature of science questionnaire C form to Turkish in a valid and reliable manner. The questionnaire was developed by Abd-El Khalick (1998) and further amendments on the questionnaire were made by Lederman, Abd-El-Khalick, Bell, and Schwartz (2002). The process of adaptation of the questionnaire was carried out in five steps. These are: translating from English to Turkish, back translation from Turkish into English, the implementation of both Turkish and English versions with preservice science teachers, carrying out the pilot research and then the actual research. The items 1 and 4, 6, 7, and 8 after validity and reliability study were revisited and each question was separated into two and indicated as a and b (e.g. 1-a and 1-b). The questionnaire is frequently used in the nature of science research and it was previously adapted to German, Portuguese, Thai, Swedish, Vietnamese and Korean. It is hoped that the Turkish adaptation will contribute to the studies in nature of science in Turkey.
