Abstract:
The differences between the Arabic and English linguistic systems and legal cultures have long been a fundamental challenge in legal translation. Examining how the dissimilarities between the Saudi and English legal cultures affect the Arabic-English legal translation has received little attention from researchers. Therefore, this critical analysis aims to examine the Arabic-English translation of 12 Saudi legal articles to identify the linguistic and cultural factors involved in the translation process. Since research that addresses the difficulties and challenges of translating the legal discourse is of undeniable significance and studies that examined the Saudi legal discourse and its translation are scarce; therefore, this study attempts to contribute to the literature by analyzing several Saudi Legal Articles and their English translations to define the challenges of translating legal terms from Arabic into English. The study adopted Šarčević’s (2000) functional equivalence framework to study the Saudi Legal Articles and their official English translations. This framework was selected because it is well suited to examine the equivalent level of the legal terms and their translations, which is the main objective of this study. This study attempts to analyze different legal terms that characterize the selected Saudi legal articles and their official English translations. The investigated legal terms include religious, culture-specific, archaic, and doublets. This study revealed that translating Arabic religious and culture-specific terms and doublets is challenging, whereas translating Arabic archaic words is much easier.

Abstract:
This study is an attempt to shed light on the issue of translating English auxiliary verbs in declarative sentences into Arabic. It aims to identify the students’ problems in translating English auxiliary verbs into Arabic. In addition, it aims to examine the extent to which the translation courses taught at the faculty affect students' translations. To achieve these aims, the researchers use a test of translation for data collection. The test includes 20 statements including auxiliary verbs. The sample is 40 English Foreign language (EFL) students at the Faculty of Arts, al-Asmariya Islamic University, Zliten. The results of this research show that the students committed different types of errors in translating English auxiliaries into Arabic such as wrong equivalents in translation and omitting the equivalence. Furthermore, the results of the study reveal that the percentage of the correct and acceptable translations of the group who have not studied any translation courses and the percentage of the other group who have studied one or more translation courses are approximately the same. In words, the translation courses do not affect the student’s proficiency in translation.

Abstract:
This article examines problems arising from biliterate performances in English and Chinese in the context of the sociolinguistics of Singapore. The questions asked include: What are the ramifications of translating Chinese literature carrying anglophobic themes into English? How might translation displace anglophobic readings from Chinese literary works? What kind of identity discourse do self-translation practices engender? The article examines three cases of cross-linguistic practice as biliterate modalities in Singapore, with an eye on the identity discourse emanating from the translational space between English and Chinese in each case. In the first case, it is argued that the English translation of a Chinese poem with an anglophobic stance triggers an ironic self-reflexivity on the part of the target text reader and has the potential to exacerbate the cultural anxiety faced by the Chinese-speaking Self in the source text. The second case presents an example where the anglophobic interpretation of a Chinese play can potentially be ‘unread’ through the homogenization of code-switching through translation. In the final case of a self-translating playwright, it is found that English-Chinese and Chinese-English translations establish an asymmetric symbiosis whereby translation creates an interliminal space in which a hybrid identity discourse is negotiated. The three cases illustrate the tensions and paradoxes residing in the translational space between English and Chinese in Singapore, pointing to the problematic of interand cross-cultural communication in the multilingual state.

Abstract:
This study examines the English and Spanish translations of metaphors in Xi Jinping: The Governance of China (I-III) within the theoretical framework of Translator Behavior Criticism. In the description of the translators’ behavioral tendencies and diachronic changes, differences are identified between the English and Spanish translating teams with regards to their philosophy of translation, which leads to an analysis of the social motivations of the translators’ behaviors within the field of political discourse translation in China. The following findings have been derived: 1) The Spanish translation is faithful to the form of expression of the ST, which suggests a translators’ behavioral tendency towards the “truth-seeking” principle. The English translation is freer since it upholds a semantic rather than formal equivalence to the ST, suggesting that the English translating team is more oriented towards the “utility-attaining” principle than their Spanish counterparts. 2) Observed from a diachronic perspective, the English translating team always maintained a balance between the two above-mentioned principles in translating the metaphors and their “truth-seeking” and “utility-attaining” behaviors were both enhanced in their translation of the third volume. The Spanish translating team always tilted towards the “truth-seeking” principle, demonstrating just a slight increase of “utility-attaining” behavior throughout their translation of the three volumes. 3) There is an evident difference between the English and Spanish translating teams regarding their “philosophy of faithfulness”. A “semantic” faithfulness with pragmatic concerns advocated by the former team is becoming the mainstream norm governing the current field of political discourse translation in China.

Translating short stories presents unique challenges and complexities that demand careful examination and analysis. This study explores the intricacies of translating this literary form by examining the strategies employed by translators to overcome obstacles. This study focuses on the short story "Cat in the Rain" by Ernest Hemingway and three Arabic translations, analyzing the approaches employed by translators. By investigating techniques such as domestication, adaptation, and literal translation, this study identifies the strengths and limitations of each approach and provides insights into how translators tackle the unique challenges of short story translation. The study found that the different Arabic translations used different translation strategies. These strategies include word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, adaptation translation, free translation, and idiomatic translation.

Nowdays, there are many translation problems although software application to assist translation are available. The objectives of this research were to identify types of error in translation, students’ difficulties in translating text, and factors which influence students’ error in translating in English department of State Institute for Islamic Studies Bengkulu. This research used descriptive quantitative method. The results of this research showed that students’ difficulties in translating English text, were elliptical errors (67.29%), idioms (87.5%), and textual meaning (73.54). The difficulties of students in translating were lack of vocabulary (87,50%), difficult translating Islamic texts (75,00%), literary works (66,66%), and grammatical issues (62,50%). Then, the factors affected students’ error in translation were ignorance of ellipsis; unable to identify ellipsis, idiom, and lexical meaning; lack of strategy in translating ellipsis, idiom, and lexical meaning; translating words per word; most students lack a strong background on the content of the text. It was concluded that the students got three types of error in transalation, four points difficulties in translation, and six factors which influence the students’ error in translation.Keywords: Translation, difficulties, and English text

Abstract Ambiguity in translation is highly prevalent, and has consequences for second-language learning and for bilingual lexical processing. To better understand this phenomenon, the current study compared the determinants of translation ambiguity across four sets of translation norms from English to Spanish, Dutch, German and Hebrew. The number of translations an English word received was correlated across these different languages, and was also correlated with the number of senses the word has in English, demonstrating that translation ambiguity is partially determined by within-language semantic ambiguity. For semantically-ambiguous English words, the probability of the different translations in Spanish and Hebrew was predicted by the meaning-dominance structure in English, beyond the influence of other lexical and semantic factors, for bilinguals translating from their L1, and translating from their L2. These findings are consistent with models postulating direct access to meaning from L2 words for moderately-proficient bilinguals.

Translation, according to the German functional approach to Translation Studies, is a purpose-driven interaction that involves many players. Translating children’s stories is no exception. Using her personal experience of translating Mr. Wolf’s Hotline, a book comprising 47 Chinese children’s stories by Wang Yizhen, a contemporary Chinese writer , in light of the Skopos and text-type theories of functional approach in particular, the author has outlined the strategies and methods adopted in her translations in terms of language, structure and culture. With child readers in mind during the translation process, the translator has used rhetorical devices, onomatopoeic words, modal particles, and also changed some of the sentence structures of the stories, such as from indirect sentences into direct quotations, and from declarative sentences into questions. In terms of culture, three aspects, namely, the culture-loaded images, the names of the characters and nursery rhymes are singled out for detailed analyses. Though marginalized, ‘children’s literature is more complex than it seems, even more complex’ (Hunt 2010: 1), and translation of children’s literature is definitely challenging. This paper outlines the strategies and methods the author has adopted in translating some children's stories from Chinese to English.

The theoretical significance lies in the fact that the article makes a certain contribution to the development of theoretical and practical aspects of translating humanitarian texts in the scientific style. The research aimed to address the following specific tasks, namely, to consider ways to achieve equivalence and adequacy in the translation of scientific texts in the humanities. An equally important task was to show and analyze translation transformations, in particular the methods of translating metonymies, abbreviations, metaphors, and phraseological units. It was noted that the difficulty in translation was caused by non-equivalent words, terms, and phrases, for which it was necessary to find a counterpart in the target language or at least to convey the meaning of the word so that the foreign reader could understand what was being said. The exact genre of the text was explained by the fact that, at first glance, the text is not a scientific one. It is noteworthy, that firstly, it is a text in the field of foreign language teaching, and secondly, it contains stylistic techniques, metaphors, metonymies, and phraseological units that are not typical of the scientific style of the Ukrainian language. In English, this is permitted. There is a problem with choosing the most appropriate translation technique for conveying the stylistic, lexical, and grammatical features of the text. The analysis of translation in the humanities has led to the following conclusions. Professional translation requires a good knowledge of the field of activity in which the translation is to be performed. Equally important is the knowledge of the source language and the ability to express one's thoughts competently in the target language. Moreover, when translating humanitarian texts, adequate, descriptive, metonymic, metaphorical, antonymic, and substitutional translations are often used. Accuracy, brevity, conciseness, clarity, literary quality, and equivalence are the main requirements for translating scientific humanitarian texts.

Translating the Qur’anic heart words into English has always been a strenuous and immense challenging task. Being the most rhetorical text, the Quranic heart words operate with clear-cut intent and cannot be replaced by what may be reflected as the corresponding word. The recent research paper mainly studies the (un)translatability phenomenon and the dilemma of translating the Qur’anic heart words into English in Sūrat Al-tawbah(Repentance) and investigates their rendition losses The key significance of this study is how the translators had attempted to attain cultural equivalence when rendering implied meaning and hidden meaning of Quranic heart words into English in Sūrat Al-tawbah. The main question of this study is: what is the phenomenon of (un)translatability dilemma of translating the Qur’anic heart words into English in Sūrat Al-tawbah? Moreover, three selected English translations of the Holy Qur’an are used by the researcher to accomplish this purpose: Marmaduke Pickthall’s (1996), Muhammad Muhsin Khan’s, Muhammad Taqiudin Al Hilali’s (1996), and M. A. S Abdul Haleem’s (2004). Furthermore, the research purports to identify the apt translation procedures and methods manipulated in translating these intended words. The study evinces that persistent, existing challenges and untranslatability dilemma, and translation loss were found. The study also reveals that translation of untranslatable Qur’anic heart words into English may cause translation losses which is a common occurrence and prevalent in the English translation of the Holy Quran in general and Sūrat Al-tawbah in particular.

This study is about how to formulate the translation technique applied by the translator in translating Mandailing Folklore Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English, to identify the translation technique used in translating Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English, and to know the quality of translation in translating Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English. The purpose of this study were to (1) formulate the translation technique that was applied by the translator in translating Mandailing Folklore Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English, (2) identify the translation technique that was used in translating Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English, and (3) know how the quality of translation in translating Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English. The research findings are as follows. First, this study found that in translating the text Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English discovered the existence of two techniques, namely single translation technique 9,1% and dual translation technique 90,9%. Second, the results showed that from 22 data consists of 50% data is an accurate translation and 50% less accurate translation. Meanwhile, 77.3% were acceptable and 22.7% less acceptable. From the aspect of its readability, 86.4% had high readability and 13.6% had medium readability. From the results of this research of 22 data sources analyzed, it was identified that the quality of the translation is accurate, acceptable and has a high degree of readability.

Translation of idioms and proverbs presents distinctive challenges due to their cultural and linguistic specificity, requiring strategies that go beyond literal translation to convey their intended meaning accurately. This study explores the translation strategies and challenges encountered in translating Maithili idioms and proverbs into English. Drawing from the Longman Dictionary of English Idioms and Larson's definition of idioms, present article highlights the significance of idiomatic expressions in preserving cultural shades and emotional connotations. Through an analysis of idiomatic expressions from Maithili literature and their English translations, the study examines the methods employed in translating these cultural artifacts. Utilizing Baker's framework, the article discusses various translation techniques and emphasizes the importance of context in conveying the essence of idiomatic expressions. The findings underscore the complexities involved in translating idioms, urging translators to prioritize conveying meaning over literal interpretation and to provide additional context when direct equivalence is lacking.

The use of digital tools in the learning process is common. Google Translate is used as an online translation tool to help the process of translating English texts. This research aims to discover the English Tadris Study Program students’ perception regarding using Google Translate to translate English texts at State Islamic University Datokarama Palu. The formulation of the problem is “How do the English Tadris Study Program students perceive the use of Google translate in translating English texts at State Islamic University Datokarama Palu?”. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with 20 English Tadris Study Program batch 2020 students as research informants. The results showed that some students used Google Translate to translate English texts. The existence of Google Translate can help students with translation. Besides that, Google Translate helps students understand English texts. Some positive perceptions conveyed by the students from the results of the interview were about the use of Google translate, including easy access, help in knowing the pronunciation of a word, increasing vocabulary, and saving time in translating. However, there is a negative perception about using Google Translate, namely the accuracy of the translation results. The students argue that the translation results from Google Translate provide inaccurate translations, so it is recommended that translation results be rechecked using other translation media.

The objective behind this paper is to analyze the English-Dogri parallel corpus translation. Machine translation is the translation from one language into another language. Machine translation is the biggest application of the Natural Language Processing (NLP). Moses is statistical machine translation system allow to train translation models for any language pair. We have developed translation system using Statistical based approach which helps in translating English to Dogri and vice versa. The parallel corpus consists of 98,973 sentences. The system gives accuracy of 80% in translating English to Dogri and the system gives accuracy of 87% in translating Dogri to English system.

Ideology is a major issue in Translation Studies. With a case study of the Chinese translations of English news headlines concerning the South China Sea disputes on the website of www.ftchinese.com, this paper attempts to provide insights into the translation of ideologies in news in the Chinese context. In the theoretical framework of critical discourse analysis, the ideological factors underlying the disparity between the English news headlines and their Chinese translations are explored. The three-dimensional model of analysis put forward by Fairclough is modified and adopted in this paper as the basic steps of analysis: firstly, describe the differences between the original and their translations; secondly, associate them with the social reality; finally, account for those differences. In addition, to demonstrate how translators maneuvered to reach a compromise with the antagonistic ideologies which may set difficulties either for the news to win the acceptance of Chinese online readers or pass the Chinese government censorship, this paper offers an analysis of the translation strategies adopted in those Chinese translations, such as substitution, omission as well as the more subtle strategies, including changes of modality and actor. It is found that in the Chinese translations of the English news headlines, translators’ priority is on producing translations suitable to target readers and censors' ideology, rather than linguistic equivalents. Therefore, translating ideology-loaded texts adds a new way to understand translation and ideological explorations in Translation Studies have great potentials.

The credits for translation courses offered at the study program of English Language Teaching at a university level in Indonesia are very limited, which is not sufficient to teach and facilitate practices for all techniques of translation. Therefore, the students should only be taught techniques frequently used in translation from English to Indonesian. This research was to analyze translation techniques commonly used in translating from English to Indonesian. The data were collected from Colors magazine, an in-flight magazine for Garuda Indonesia. The magazine comes in two languages. The sentences were extracted, and translated sentences in Indonesian were compared to the original version in English. The research results showed that the most frequently used techniques in translating from English into Indonesian are amplification (23.36%), reduction (15.20%), transposition (12.32%), borrowing (12%), modulation (11.68%), and literal translation (10.08%). Therefore, it is recommended that lecturers teaching students majoring English Language Teaching provide them with those techniques of translations with practices, feedbacks and explicit instruction for revisions.

The relevance of the research is based on the need for an in-depth study of effective ways, techniques and methods of translating English-language news texts into Ukrainian, in particular news texts of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), which is due not only to Ukraine’s membership in the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, but also to globalization and the intensive development of international relations, which in turn affect the increasing interest of modern Ukrainian readers in foreign news texts. In addition, the relevance of the topic is due to the increased attention of linguists to modern media discourse, which also includes news discourse, and the peculiarities of its translation. The aim of the work is to analyze the specifics of translating English-language news texts into Ukrainian based on the material of OSCE news texts. To achieve this goal, the following research methods were used: comparative and comparable methods for determining the features and problems of translating English-language news texts into Ukrainian; the method of systematization and the method of complex translation analysis for analyzing and systematizing the tools used in translating English-language news texts into Ukrainian, and also using the continuous sampling method to search for basic research materials. As a result of a comparative analysis of the original English-language news texts with their translations into Ukrainian, the regularities of applying specific translation strategy, as well as the corresponding translation transformations that are necessary to achieve an adequate translation of the English-language news text were determined. The study also analyzed the problem of finding an equivalent when translating news texts.

Chinese is a verb-dominated language, while English is a noun-dominated language. In Chinese-English translation, Translators must deal with Chinese verbs based on the characteristics of English. Through analyzing the subtitle of Aerial China: Jiangxi, it found that translators have used different translation strategies to translate Chinese verbs into English. Objectives: This paper aims to study the main challenges associated with translating idioms between English and Arabic, as well as the strategies used by Algerian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners to overcome difficulties in translating idioms from one language to another. Methods: A translation test consisting of 18 sentences, 9 in English and 9 in Arabic, collected from Benson (1985), Mahmoud (1994), and Usama (1998), and As-Safi (2016), was administered to thirty Algerian postgraduate EFL students at Oran University in Algeria. Based on the translations provided in these sources, the accuracy of collocation translation was evaluated, and translation strategies were identified and entered into the Excel program, where frequencies and percentages were calculated. Results: The participants’ overall performance was unsatisfactory, with 11,85% accurate equivalent renditions of collocations from Arabic to English, and 27,03% from English to Arabic. Collocations displaying the "Adjective + Noun" pattern were particularly problematic for the participants. This can be attributed to a lack of knowledge of adjectives in the target language (TL) and their semantic differences, as evident in their excessive use of near-synonymous adjectives. Translating collocations from English to Arabic proved to be more challenging for them than translating collocations from Arabic to English. To compensate for their lack of familiarity with collocations, the EFL learners used the strategies of literal translation, synonymy, reduction, deletion, paraphrasing, and over-generalization. Conclusions: These findings call for integrating English collocations in the school curricula in Algeria, the development of suitable instructional materials and programs for teaching collocations and prioritizing the teaching of collocations or word combinations in classrooms.

Abstract This paper proposes a model that addresses students’ common errors in English-Arabic-English translation. My study documents an attempt to develop a new interconnectedness between students’ errors and translation theories that may improve their performance when translating different genres. Consistent and repeated errors produced by tens of students working on the same texts were compiled and analyzed. The errors showed lack of knowledge of genre structure, functional analysis, appropriate intervention as well as lack of understanding of the wider context upon which appropriate decisions can be made. The methodology expounded in this study involves describing and categorizing students’ errors. It suggests solutions grounded in translation theory and proposes comparisons with professional translations. This methodology proved to be very successful during my teaching experience at the Lebanese University.1 The model solution developed in this study draws on genre analysis, text-typology, text-functionality, register analysis, and equivalence. The application of the model solution minimized students’ errors to a large extent and enabled them to provide accurate descriptions of different translation strategies and critically assess professional translations.

Proverbs are witty, pithy, and epigrammatic expressions. They are idiosyncratic, being based on a specific culture. As cultural translation is difficult, translation of proverbs is not easy. Yet, translation practices on such genre have been appearing. In such a scenario, some such practices are found in the domain of Nepali into English translations. In this background, the present study aims at reviewing the available models for translating proverbs and recommending one, which can be used for translating Nepali proverbs into English. To achieve the objectives, I collected twenty proverbs purposively from Lall (1991) and Sharma (2000), primarily because I could deal only with twenty in a short period and limited space. By way of qualitative analysis and interpretation and by testing Wilson's (2009) model, I have concluded that the model is applicable for the purpose.

The comparisons and analyses expose problems in translating traditional Chinese literary theories into English, but it also gives us some insights. We find that some characteristics of the text, such as the critical terms, the figurative use of language, and the numerous quotes and illusions, impose lots of challenges to the translating. We also find that a comparative study of Chinese and Western poetics in many ways is helpful to the translation of the texts of traditional Chinese literary theories.

The research is aimed at studying the linguistic aspects of translating multimodal comic narratives, particularly English language comics, into Ukrainian in order to preserve theircomic potential and effective communication with the audience. Having analyzed numerous approaches to the translation of comic speech, the authors identify key factors that influence the preservation of the pragmatic effect and emotional sphere of the original. Additionally, they focus on the main linguistic and stylistic tools used in multimodal comic narratives, analyze various approaches to the translation of multimodal comic narratives, determine the impact of applied linguistic and parasemic tools on the perception of emotional and informative effect, and explore the specifics in translating various genres of comics. There was employed a combined methodological approach, which includes the analysis of linguistic and stylistic aspects of multimodal comic narratives, a comparative analysis of translations, as well as experimental studies on the audience’s perception of the emotional and informative effect. Overall, the article helps deepen the understanding of the translation process and approaches to preserving the emotional and informative effect in comics, contributing to further research and practical application in the field of stylistics and translation studies.

This paper examines the difficulties involved in translating culture-bound compliments from spoken Jordanian Arabic into English in different cultural interactions. The study specifically looks into a number of compliments in Arabic and discusses their translation into English. To achieve this goal, a test was designed by the researchers to examine the translation of 10 compliments that are not familiar to the English language and culture, and these translations were examined with the help of a few native English-speaking colleagues to check their acceptability in stylistic terms. The sample of subjects included 20 female BA students at the University of Jordan; all of them are in their third year. The findings reveal that the participants adopted the techniques of literal translation, paraphrase, addition, and omission when translating culture-bound compliments. They also encountered difficulties relating to grammar, lexical choice, and collocation.

This study aims to compare and discuss the Chinese-English translations of Huniu’s (虎妞) personalized language in four different English translations of the Chinese novel Luotuo Xiangzi, supported by Nida’s theory of “functional equivalence” and with a demonstration of the features of Huniu’s personalized language that lead to difficulties in translation as a framework for the analysis. The analysis reveals that, when translating Huniu’s personalized language, the translators adopted various translation methods, including euphemism, literal translation, deletion, and free translation. The findings indicate that the use of euphemisms as a translation strategy does not support maintaining the character’s language features and style when translating the swear words used by the character. Proactive changes in the tone of the speech of the character in translation impacts the reproduction of that character’s personality and image. In addition, Huniu’s language style of the Beijing dialect is difficult to maintain in translation. These findings serve as a reference for the Chinese-English translation of a character’s personalized language in novels to facilitate the dissemination of Chinese literature around the world.

Several platforms, such as Netflix, offer subtitles of different works and movies in several languages, including Arabic and English. In this study, the researchers discuss the strategies used to overcome the challenges subtitlers face when translating Egyptian idiomatic expressions and proverbs into English. A parallel corpus of four movies, namely تيتا رهيبة My horrible grandma, عسل أسود Bittersweet, الباشا تلميذ The Student cop, and عمارة يعقوبيان Yacoubian Building, was compiled from scratch. The idiomatic expressions and proverbs were identified and analyzed according to Baker's taxonomies (Baker, 1992). The translation strategy of "paraphrasing" was the most frequently used in translating proverbs. In rendering idiomatic expressions, the subtitlers mostly resorted to the strategy of "translating by paraphrasing using unrelated words to deal with the non-equivalent expression". "Mistranslation" was detected in some cases, most likely due to the lack of the target culture knowledge and not finding appropriate equivalents. The subtitlers sometimes used literal translation, which distorted the meaning and resulted in unnatural translations. The results also revealed that some expressions that were repeatedly used in the movies were translated differently according to the context. This study can be beneficial to translators and translation students, especially those interested in subtitling movies and translating proverbs and idiomatic expressions.

Objectives: This study aims at evaluating the accuracy and acceptability of Reverso, a translation tool particularly used by Arabic-speaking university students who major in English, when translating religious texts from Arabic into English. Methods: To achieve the objectives of the study, the translations of the antonyms in Surat al-Raʕd (Thunder) as suggested by Reverso were located, studied and analyzed from a semantic perspective. These translations were checked against two translations of the Holy Quran, namely: Yosef Ali’s and Hilali-Khan’s. Ibn Kathir’s Exegesis in Arabic was also used to check the common meaning of the verses where the words appeared. In addition, two Arabic-Arabic dictionaries (Əlwɑsi:t and əlmɑʕæni:) and one English dictionary (Cambridge Online Free Dictionary) were consulted. Results: Reverso may work well in translating single words but fails in translating sentences that have antonyms. In addition, Reverso database lacks many religious terms, particularly those used in the Holy Quran. Conclusions: The study found that Reverso is not a guaranteed tool for translating religious texts. The findings of the study may be of value for translators who use this application in Islamic discourse.

The present study aimed to provide a contrastive analysis of two English translations of the famous Arabic poem known in English as “Let days do what they will” by Mohammad ibn Idris al-Shafi’i. The two English translations were produced by two different translation scholars in the language pair Arabic and English. The analysis focused on how the translators dealt with the most important features of poetry when translating the Arabic poem into English. Such features included form, meaning, sound and imagery. The findings revealed some similarities and differences in both translations with reference to the above-mentioned features. It is recommended that more research be conducted on either Arabic-English translation of poetry or English-Arabic translation of poetry as this kind of research seems to be relatively scarce.

The study seeks to identify the common difficulties and ambiguities that arise when translating prepositions from English into Arabic and to provide suggestions for improving the precision and understandability of this process. Data are collected from a wide range of online translations carried out by translators with varying degrees of training and proficiency. The findings of a study have highlighted the importance of considering the intricate details of the target language and its cultural background while translating prepositions. The study suggests that linguistic and cultural variations can lead to difficulties when translating idiomatic statements that contain prepositions. Prepositional idioms, which are commonly used in informal English, can be particularly challenging to translate accurately in other languages. The study suggests that language proficiency alone is insufficient for accurate translation. Translators must also take into account cultural and emotional nuances while translating prepositions to ensure that the intended meaning is conveyed accurately.

Abstract Research focused on the cognitive processes surrounding bilingual language representation has revealed the important role that translation ambiguity plays in how languages are stored in memory (Tokowicz & Kroll, 2007). In addition, translation of emotionally related information has been shown to be challenging because a direct translation does not always exist (Basnight-Brown & Altarriba, 2014). The focus of the current study was to explore the processing of ambiguous words for translations that differ in orthography. In Experiment 1, Chinese-English bilinguals translated concrete and abstract words that differed in the number of translations across languages. In Experiment 2, emotion words were introduced into the context, in order to examine differences in emotion translation across languages. The results revealed that words with a single translation were produced faster and more accurately than words that had multiple translations. Finally, translation of emotional stimuli was faster when translating Chinese words as compared to English words.

Gender, Consensus, and the Translation of Gisèle Pineau's L'espérance-macadam — This article uses an experiment in translating Guadeloupean writer Gisèle Pineau's novel L'espérance-macadam via consensus as a point of departure for analyzing the broader context of translating the French Caribbean for an English-speaking public. Previous efforts at translating recent French Caribbean fiction have focused on the challenge of representing the linguistic spectrum specific to the franco- and creolophone Caribbean. Here, it is suggested that Pineau's particular choices in inflecting French with Creole represent women in important ways, and that an awareness of this gendering of language is germane to translation into English. It is also acknowledged that desires on the part of English-speaking translators are not necessarily innocent but that an awareness of gender and local specificities can contribute to the consensus process entailed in publishing translations and should be part of ongoing debates concerning the French Caribbean in general.

We have looked into some samples of translations, selected from well known English translations of the Holy Quran and critically examined them. There were some errors in those translations, due to linguistic factors, owing to the differences between the Arabic and the English Language systems. Some errors were due to the cultural background of the translator which intentionally or unintentionally has affected the translation. Many samples were discussed and suggestions for corrections were made. Then further recommendations were given to be used as guidelines for similar future attempts. We concluded that the simulation of old words in drafting a translation does not fit with the English language as a target language. The close-reading of the translations is accompanied by a short outline of Leśmian’s existence in English language along with an attempt to answer the question of whether translating his poetic language is at all possible or is Leśmian’s work an evident proof (as many critics say) of the phenomenon known as untranslatability.

Abstract:
This study investigated the use of U-Dictionary and Google Translate in translating English Speech into the Indonesian language. This study aimed to test whether U-Dictionary outperforms Google Translate in translating English Speech into Indonesian. The true experimental design was applied to examine the result of the translation from U-Dictionary and Google Translate. Two raters assessed the translation result from U-Dictionary and Google Translate using a translation scoring rubric (In the "Equal Variances Assumed" section, the two-tailed significance value is 0.000, which is less than 0.05). The result showed that U-Dictionary didn’t outperform Google Translate in translating English Speech into Indonesian. On the contrary, Google Translate outperformed U-Dictionary Google Translate in translating English Speech into the Indonesian language. Here, the source language is English and the target language is Indonesian language. The result strongly suggests that Google Translate app is more effective than U-Dictionary in translating English to Indonesian in relating topics such as biography, daily life, and culture of certain community. The further research is expected to investigate the efficacy of Google Translate towards U-Dictionary in different scope of discourse like economic, politic, law, and etc. Moreover, the future research may compare among Machine Translation (MT) or among translation apps.

The main purpose of this research is to find out Google Translate errors when translating bachelor's paper abstracts from Indonesian to English. Six abstracts of Non-English major undergraduate student papers from diverse faculties Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Kesehatan Siti Khadijah Palembang were chosen at random. Following that, the data is compared for each sentence segment, as well as any words or phrases with problems are investigated. The result shows that the primary errors of abstract translations include lexicosemantic, tense, preposition, word order, distribution, and use of verb group, as well as active and passive voice errors. Abstract translation outcomes deviate significantly from expectations. Both translating English writings into Indonesian and Indonesian texts into English takes advanced translation abilities. Regarding translation, several factors should be considered; they include the linguistic system utilized for both languages and the cultural understanding of the two languages. In the case of scientific writing translation, involve a translator in improving the quality of translation. In terms of academics, it is recommended that further research be done on comparable challenges in abstract translation, but with more variety from diverse sources.

Knowledge of academic English vocabulary is essential for upper secondary L2 English learners preparing for university studies, yet previous research suggests students in Scandinavian settings may need support to acquire this lexis (Edgarsson, 2017; Henriksen & Danelund, 2015). The abundance of Graeco-Latin cognates between European languages and academic English has been shown to lessen the learning burden of academic English vocabulary for speakers of Romance languages (Cobb, 2000; Petrescu et al., 2017). However, less research has been conducted for speakers of Scandinavian languages who also have appropriate translations of Germanic origin for this vocabulary. Interestingly, previous studies have indicated that proficient Norwegian-speaking students taking tertiary studies made extensive use of Graeco-Latin cognates when translating academic English vocabulary, but research has yet to expand this investigation to upper secondary students and across proficiency levels. Therefore, the current study investigated if Norwegian-speaking students (N= 132) in their first year of upper secondary education produced Graeco-Latin cognates when translating academic English. Findings showed extensive use of L1 Latinate cognate forms to translate the English target words. However, less proficient learners had significantly fewer cognate translations and significantly more untranslated target words than more proficient learners. Findings suggest that in-class instruction raising awareness of Graeco-Latin cognates in academic English may be worthwhile, especially for less-proficient learners. The aim of the study is to find out the type of translation method that the college students use most in translating a text from English into Indonesia, and challenges that the college students face in translating the material. The subject of this research takes place in one College in Cimahi. The participants of this study are 10 college students who will translate a text from English into Indonesian. The college students translation method in translating a text from English into Indonesian are the research object. The data collection techniques used in this study involved doing the test, and interview. This research reveals that (1) the students use Literal translation as the method in translating a descriptive text as the most used translation method is Literal Translation that reached 69.4% as there are 125 sentences that are indicated as the Literal Translation Method out of 180 sentences of total. (2) The challenges of students that face in translating a descriptive text goes to the lack of vocabulary.

Abstract:
Translation is a task which involves different aspects of linguistics. Producing equivalent degree of markedness is one of linguistic competences which should be owned by the translators. This ability has a contribution in maintaining the thematic structure and the propositional meaning through the translation process. The present study is a descriptive analytical corpus-based aimed to analyze (1) the translation of English marked structures, those are passive, it-cleft, existential and pseudo-cleft into Indonesian, and (2) the ways presenting the thematic structures in the target language. The development of English marked sentences involves thematization process, therefore analyzing the ways in translating these marked sentences and transferring the thematic structures to their Indonesian counterparts are interesting to be conducted. The corpus found in an English book entitled The Intelligent Investor and its Indonesian translation. The corpus is a parallel data consists of 191 marked English sentences and their Indonesian translations. Comparative analysis conducted to the data showed that 78.5% of the marked English sentences were translated into marked sentences in Indonesian. Translating the marked English sentences into Indonesian marked sentences supported the process of preserving the information.

Translating text is look like an easy work, but it is a complicated job. A translation text may not have different meaning from the source text to the target language of the text. Translating text from Indonesia to English should not change the sense of language since our culture is different from abroad culture. Translating text from Indonesia to English is more difficult than from English to Indonesia. Since, English has grammar where grammar should not be error. Then, translator also should pay attention to word choice of English. The purposes of carrying this research are to know students’ ability in translating text and common errors made by students in translating text from English to Indonesia at English education students of UPI YPTK Padang in 2019/2020 academic year. This research was descriptive one. The sample of this research was 30 students of English study program of UPI YPTK Padang. The data were collected by using test. The result of the test showed that students had different ability in translating text. In general, students’ ability in translating text was categorized good.

Idioms, the crystallization of language, are always rich in cultural connotation and national flavor. Translating idioms is quite a difficult task because only a few English idioms have equivalents in Chinese idioms due to linguistic, especially cultural differences. Explanational translation, literal translation, free translation, compensatory translation, borrowing, integrated approach, are six translation tactics in translating English idioms into Chinese. This paper aims to propose the explanational translation approach, one of important and indispensable tactics to Chinese translation of English idioms based on Eugene A. Nida’s view on translation and culture. In order to keep the flavor of the original English idioms as well as to cater for the Chinese readers, each tactics should be reasonably employed in the process of translating. It is worth discussing on the application of explanational translation approach to English idioms so as to better use explanational translation tactic in translation, hoping to cast some enlightenment on further research in this field.

The research is conducted to find out what types of errors the students do most in translating English into Indonesian and Indonesian into English in order to improve the quality of the teaching for Private University Students. The description of the data is made by the writer based on the errors the students made in translation. The errors are articles, plural words, pronoun, noun phrases, gerund, participles, tenses, and word choices. The methodology used in this research is a qualitative research using the students’ translation from English into Indonesian and Indonesian into English. The research found the most error made by the students in translation is word choices 33.18 % or 154 errors in translating English into Indonesian and tenses 48.73% or 135 errors in translating Indonesian into English. The least error found in the students’ translation was gerund 0.64% or 3 errors in English into Indonesian and 0.72% or 2 errors Indonesian into English

The aims of this study are (1) to describe the translation method adopted by the translator in translating the exposition text, (2) to formulate the translation techniques applied in translating the expository text in the order of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences into Indonesian from English by applying translation procedures according to Molina and Albir (2002). This research uses a descriptive – qualitative approach with a case study design that is oriented towards the translation product. The data sources in this study are the document and exposition text “When Being Overweight Is a Health Problem” which was reviewed by Mary L. Gavin, MD and reviewed in 2018 as the object of the study, and the results of the translation from English which are summarized in this research data are in the form of words, phrases, clauses and sentences of expository texts and their translations. Research data was collected by document analysis and analyzed by interactive analysis method. The research findings are as follows, first, seven translation methods are applied in translating expository texts, namely the word-for-word method, the faithful method, the semantic method, the adaptation method, the independent method, the idiomatic method, and the communicative method. Second, eight translation techniques are applied in translating expository texts, namely literal techniques, pure borrowing, natural borrowing, calque, transposition, modulation, omission and addition. Based on the frequency of use, the literal technique ranks first, followed by natural borrowing, pure borrowing, transposition, calque, modulation, omission, and addition techniques. Theoretically, literal, pure borrowing, natural borrowing, and calque techniques are oriented to the source language while transposition, modulation, omission, and addition techniques are oriented to the target language. The translation is an activity that increases students' awareness of the similarities and differences between the grammatical structure of the source language and the target language. Reveals that for a good translation to achieve or meet certain factors such as accuracy, readability, and acceptability. The difference in grammatical structure between the source language and the target language often results in some changes in meaning during the translation process. This research find out the student’s ability in English translation and also the accuracy, readability, and acceptability of the results of abstract translations. Method in this research was descriptive qualitative research with total number of population 80 student’s abstract translations. The results of research on students' ability to translate from Indonesian into English in terms of accuracy is the total score 16.2, readability total score 17.4, and acceptability is 17.4%. the percentage of the mean score 95.6% with very excellent category. From the analysis of students' abilities in translating from Indonesia to English, the authors found that 80 students who translated abstracts achieved a very good level/excellent. In general, the author concludes that the ability of undergraduate nursing study program students in the 2020/2021 academic year in translating Indonesian into English was very good.
