Abstract:
Translating legal texts is considered as the most difficult translation task as it needs accurate and correct translation, and even minor errors can result in lawsuits and legal exposure. This paper aims at finding out the translation problems and formulating the strategies best applicable in translating legal texts from bahasa Indonesia into English. This is a descriptive study using a document analysis as the method. The data were 15 legal texts having been translated from bahasa Indonesia into English by semi-professional translators. In analysing the data, the document analysis was carried out by skimming, reading, and interpreting the translated legal texts. The results of data analysis reveal three general problems in translating legal texts done by the semi-professional translators, including finding the right equivalent, translator’s insufficient knowledge of English legal language and source text decoding. To overcome such problems, four strategies are proposed: (i) utilizing online resources, (ii) finding the proposition of the legal sentence, (iii) using a description technique, and (iv) employing functional approach to translation. It is concluded that translating legal texts requires translator’s good knowledge of applicable laws and language competence in both the source language and target language.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to identify techniques of translation that are applied in translating cultural words in The Da Vinci Code novel from English into Bahasa Indonesia and interpreting the reason of the translator in applying those techniques. This study uses descriptive and qualitative approach. The cultural words found in the novel were collected in tables and categorized based on five types of culture that are proposed by Newmark. Result of the study shows that there are 171 cultural terms and there are six Molina and Albir’s techniques of translation applied by the translator, those are transposition with 23 occurrences, pure borrowing with 118 occurrences, naturalized borrowing with 10 occurrences, calque with seven occurrences, established equivalence with four occurrences, and discursive creation with nine occurrences. Pure borowing is the technique applied most by the translator. This was done by the translator in order that information conveyed by the author of the original novel could be accepted by the target readers accurately.

Abstract:
The presented article is aimed at elaborating the problem of translating sacred texts in the contemporary linguistic paradigm. The main objective of the paper consists in investigating sacred texts as the object of translation studied in accordance with the communicative and translational aspects. The results of the carried-out research have proved that there exist common strategies and techniques of interpreting and rendering religious texts. The practical value of the research lies in the fact that the conclusions may be applied in the translation activity. The urgency of this paper arises from the need for global synergetic all-sided review of sacred texts as a mental phenomenon in general and in contemporary translation studies. The object of the work is a sacred text viewed in the aspect of its translatability. The subject is the unique nature of sacred texts with their immanent features (coherence, cohesion and intertextuality). The immediate tasks of the article have been predetermined by the above-mentioned objective and include respectively: the disclosure of the specifics of sacred text; the outline of the typologically common strategies and tactics of translating sacred texts. The methodology of this research involved the inductive and deductive methods, the method of contrastive analysis and ethnic methodological conversation analysis. In the course of the research it has been concluded and experimentally and statistically proved that there exist common strategies and tactics of translating sacred texts into different languages. It has also been postulated that the pragmatic and the expressive potential of sacred texts is preserved and rendered in translation. The perspective is seen in reviewing this issue in different Germanic and Slavic languages. The further research in the matter of possible cooperation of philosophers and translators in the study of the sacred texts also seems promising.

Rehearsing a new contemporary notated piano score often requires the performer to dedicate a large amount of time to translating the notation: tasks may include interpreting new symbols, or old symbols in new contexts, learning new extended techniques, and learning the link between symbol and physical gesture. Huisman et al's article details an experiment that studies the use of various types of music editions and their effect on the practice and performance of contemporary piano music scores. This commentary considers the following issues when discussing the interpretation of unfamiliar piano scores: 1) issues in reading notation that arise from performance practice challenges, 2) cultivating an interpretive platform, and 3) embodiment in the rehearsal of a new, contemporary score.

Codes of ethics in translating and interpreting have become increasingly examined in recent literature, as practitioners in ever-widening fields of practice see such codes as essential in underpinning their professionalism. While such codes in various professions set standards for their association’s membership, codes in some sectors of translating and interpreting often have a wider function, detailing ground rules and techniques for practice and serving as educational documents, for users of services as much as for practitioners. The code of ethics developed by the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators [AUSIT] has been often cited in international literature as a broad, comprehensive generic code for professional practice. When this code was recently rewritten by its association, the wider functions of the code, as well as core considerations of practitioners’ role, conduct and autonomy were extensively debated. This article examines the issues that arose in rewriting the AUSIT code, drawing on international comparisons of how other codes have defined their central tenets.

The paper proposes a hierarchical approach to differentiating between the concepts of translation strategy, translation tactic and translation technique in the context of simultaneous interpreting. Strategy as the most general category is related to and conditioned by the communicative situation at large; tactics correlate with verbal cognitive processes; techniques facilitate appropriate transformation of language and discourse form.

Abstract:
Although post-editing of machine translation (PEMT) has been much discussed and spoken among students in higher education institutions, little empirical evidence has been reported regarding the students’ real practices in their academic life. To fill this practical gap, this article explores the students’ experiences in dealing with PEMT in a Theoretical Foundation of Translating and Interpreting (TFTI) course. This exploration elaborates practical insights into how the students initially started practicing translation through PEMT in their actual day-to-day practices. Fifty-eight English students studying in an undergraduate program in a prominent public university in Indonesia voluntarily participated in this qualitative case study. Data were collected from students’ focused-group discussion (FGD), survey questionnaire, in-depth interviews, and students’ documents and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings showed that post-editing process provides the students with experiences in building their text knowledge to enable them to have high awareness and sensitivity to the academic texts. In addition, in PEMT practices, the students’ experiences were explored through the implementation of translation methods and techniques expected to build their awareness in PEMT with regard to language structure and language function. These experiences have given some empirical inputs for the lecturers to design relevant tasks and apply various translating practices for students’ more meaningful learning.

The neurological mechanisms involved in translating and interpreting are one of the chief known unknowns in translation studies. Translation studies has explored many facets of the processes and products of translation and interpreting, ranging from the linguistic aspects to the textual aspects, from the politics of translation to implications from cognitive science, but little is known about the production and reception of translation at the level of the individual brain and the level of molecular biology.1 Much of this terra incognita will be explored and illuminated by neuroscience in the coming quarter century, and significant discoveries pertaining to language processing in translation will be made during the coming decade, linking observable behaviors at the macro level with knowledge of what happens in the production and reception of translation at the micro level of the neuron and the neuronal pathways of the brain. In the past two decades powerful new techniques for observing brain function in healthy living individuals have been devised. To a large extent neuroscience has become a rapidly developing field because of new technologies that make it possible to monitor the brain as it actually works, to document neural pathways, and even to track the activity of specific neurons. This article focuses on discoveries in neuroscience pertaining to perception, memory, and brain plasticity that have already achieved consensus in the field and that have durable implications for the ways we will think about translation in the future.

This research was conducted with the aim of describing the functions of legend of lake sarangan stories in Sarangan Village, Kec. Plaosan Kab. East Java Magetan. This research includes qualitative research based on naturalistic approaches. The research data is based on the results of interviews with informants. Data is collected by observation, recording, interviewing and recording methods. Data analysis was carried out in five stages, namely (1) transcribing oral data in written form, (2) summarizing and translating, (3) interpreting. Analysis of the data used in this study is content analysis techniques (conten analysis). The content analysis technique is used in analyzing the function of folklore in the Sarangan lake. The results of the study show that there are functions that include (1) entertainment, (2) institutions of cultural institutions, (3) education, (4) social order, (5) group solidarity, (6) social criticism, (7) pleasant divorce from reality, and (8) potential weapons in society.

AbstractSeveral recent reviews have suggested that cognitive rehabilitation may hold promise in the treatment of memory deficits experienced by patients with mild cognitive impairment. In contrast to the previous reviews that mainly focused on outcome, the current review examines key methodological challenges that are critical for designing and interpreting research studies and translating results into clinical practice. Using methodological details from 36 studies, we first examine diagnostic variability and how the use of cutoffs may bias samples toward more severely impaired patients. Second, the strengths and limitations of several common rehabilitative techniques are discussed. Half of the reviewed studies used a multi-technique approach that precludes the causal attribution between any specific technique and subsequent improvement. Third, there is a clear need to examine the dose-response relationship since this information was strikingly absent from most studies. Fourth, outcome measures varied widely and frequently depended on neuropsychological tests with little theoretical justification or ecological relevance. Fifth, we discuss how the variability in each of these other four areas complicates efforts to examine training generalization. Overall, future studies should place greater emphasis on ecologically relevant treatment approaches and outcome measures and we propose a hierarchical model that may aid in this pursuit. In this study, the problem is what kind of slang words that were used in the movie and what strategy that is used for translating slang words into Indonesian. The data in this article is classified based on the theories of Allan and Burridge (2006) classification of slang, which classified slang into five categories: fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, acronym, and clipping.Translation strategy by Mona Baker was used to determine the strategies used for translating slang words, which include similar meanings and forms, similar meanings but dissimilar forms, paraphrase, and omission. This article is potentially intended to extend awareness of the techniques used by the subtitlers in interpreting the slang expressions in the subtitles of the film. and give information about what kind of slang that was used in this movie. Because the data was in the form of words or written language with the object subtitles that occur in the movie and are pronounced by the characters, this study used a qualitative method. This study employs a variety of methods to analyze data relevant to the problem at hand, with the first problem employing Allan and Burridge theory and the second employing Mona Baker theory. Abstract:
This study analyzed students’ difficulties in translating idiomatic expression sentences at the sixth semester of English department of IAIN Langsa. It further discussed factors that trigger the problems. The research applied qualitative content analysis approach and the subject was 10 students of the sixth-semester of English education department, IAIN Langsa. Data collecting techniques were tests and interviews. The findings showed that the learners experienced several difficulties in translating idiomatic expressions included lexical knowledge, cultural differences, and stylistic barrier. These were due to the difficulty in finding the closest equivalent source language and the difficulty in finding meaning that matches the meaning of the idiomatic expressions. The factors that generated those difficulties included students' lack of knowledge of idiomatic expressions, cultural differences between English and Indonesian, students rarely used them in speaking or writing in everyday life, and the difficulty in interpreting idiomatic expressions. However, this study contributed to encourage both lecturers and students to emphasize vocabulary enhancement and language expressions, especially idioms, and to practice them in writing and speaking both in and outside of the classroom.

One crucial thing in environmental learning is how gender-based media is not yet used optimally to improve concept understanding in the classroom. Students will not develop pro-environmental concerns and behavior if they do not understand pollution and environmental issue. This study aims to prove the influence of learning media and gender on understanding environmental pollution concepts in a Secondary High School in Jakarta, Indonesia. The method used is an experiment with a 2 x 2 factorial design. The sample is taken based on the stratified random sampling technique that consists of 40 students with 20 males and 20 females from two Senior High Schools in Jakarta, Indonesia. The instrument used in this study was 32 multiple choice questions to measure students' understanding, consisting of translating, interpreting, and extrapolating dimensions. The data analysis interpretation shows an interaction effect between learning media and gender on understanding the environmental pollution concept. Therefore, this study recommends that teachers use various media such as caricatures and comics that are proven usable to accommodate gender differences and enhance conceptual understanding in the classroom.

Recent advances in the understanding of turbofan noise generation and suppression in aircraft engines are reviewed with particular emphasis on NASA research. The review addresses each link in the chain of physical processes which connect unsteady flow interactions with fan blades to far field noise. Mechanism identification and description, duct propagation, radiation, and acoustic suppression are discussed. Recent advances in the experimental technique of fan inflow control assure that inflight generation mechanisms are not masked by extraneous sources in static tests. Rotor blade surface pressure and wake velocity measurements aid the determination of the types and strengths of the generation mechanisms. Approaches to predicting or measuring acoustic mode content, optimizing treatment impedance to maximize attenuation, translating impedance into porous wall structure, and interpreting far field directivity patterns are illustrated by comparisons of analytical and experimental results. A persistent theme of the review is the interdependence of source and acoustic treatment design to minimize far field noise. Areas requiring further research are discussed and the relevance of aircraft turbofan results to quieting other turbomachinery installations is addressed.

The purpose of this study is to suggest some effective ways of training interpreters and to share the experience of Tashkent state university of Uzbek Language and Literature named after Alisher Navoi with the same purpose of interpreter training. More specifically, it deals with theoretical views of different scholars about simultaneous interpreting to understand what actions the process of simultaneous interpreting involves and what skills a person is required to have in order to carry out this task. Training simultaneous interpreting is very complicated and complex task because it involves a great number of objectives to be realized. The concern of our investigation is the methods of teaching interpreting, the ways to make interpreter training i more effective and efficient. The reason why we undertook this research is that even though a lot have been done in this field of study by many scholars of the world, the problems specific to training interpreters in such language pair as Uzbek- English has still remained untouched. The article shares experiences of university staff about linguistic competency of interpreters, their aptitude to work in stressful settings, deep and well-structured background knowledge, ability to anticipate the words to be used in phrases, and their ability to apply various techniques that help them in interpreting task as their career. After the establishment of Tashkent state University of Uzbek Language and Literature named after Alisher Navai in 2016, professor Sh.S. Sirojiddinov, its rector, and specialists interpreters training took the course towards developing special programs targeting at holding the conference for training interpreters becoming qualified in translating from Uzbek into English and vice versa. The President of Uzbekistan Sh. Mirziyoyev considered this program as one of the priority tasks demanded for the administration and staff of university administrators and staff. The decision was motivated by the shortage of highly qualified interpreters who can interpret from Uzbek into English and from English into Uzbek during international conferences and forums.

My aim is to have a closer look at the benefits of a cognitive linguistic approach to scientific discourse, its metaphorical terms and their translation. This area of research has emerged over recent decades. What role do metaphors play in science and terminology? Why do metaphors appear in scientific terms? The reasons are cognitive. My approach is based on the findings of cognitive linguistics about the significance of metaphor in thought and language, and my own translation and interpreting experience. Metaphor has been recognised as a basic technique of reasoning that is also manifest in terminology, which is an important area of meaning construction. Theoretical conclusions are drawn, applying the tenets of Cognitive Linguistics, translation theory, semantic and stylistic analyses of the empirical material, which I have chosen from my own archive of metaphorical terminology and my glossaries of simultaneous conference interpreting. Translation of metaphorical scientific terminology falls within the realm of Applied Linguistics, which is an interdisciplinary field, drawing on a number of disciplines apart from linguistics. Over the last decade, the treatment of patients with advanced non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has become reliant on tissue and/or blood biomarkers to help guide treatment decisions. There are now multiple biomarker-defined patient subgroups, with evidence showing that treatment with targeted therapies has superior clinical outcomes when compared with traditional cytotoxic chemotherapy. However, rapid change in the field of precision oncology brings with it the challenge of translating recommendations into clinical practice. In this review, we discuss the major guidelines recommending biomarker testing in NSCLC, as well the logistical challenges to applying these guidelines to patients with NSCLC both in the United States and worldwide. The techniques commonly used for biomarker testing will be discussed, both for tissue- and blood-based biomarkers. Finally, we discuss the challenge of interpreting the results of biomarker testing and using these results to guide treatment decisions.

<p>Sight translation is the oral translation of a written text and is a mixture of translation and interpreting. Sight translation is a widely-used activity in translation training programs. Yet, this mode of translation has rarely been applied as a reading instruction technique in Iranian EFL instruction context in spite of the growing interest in using sight translation in language teaching and learning. This study aims at investigating the effect of sight translation on the reading comprehension ability of Iranian undergraduate EFL students. This is a quasi-experimental study involving treatment. To this end, four reading comprehension classes involving 70 learners were divided into two groups, with the experimental one receiving reading instruction with sight translation exercises and the control group receiving reading instruction without sight translation exercises. The posttest results revealed that the experimental group performing sight translation exercises in classroom outperformed the control group who had not engaged in sight translation. This study has implications for ELT instructors and learners in an Iranian context as they can use sight translation exercises as an effective technique for improving the reading comprehension ability of their learners.</p>

This article presents the Byzantine book of epigrams on Prometheus, found at the end of Prometheus Bound in a considerable part of Aeschylean manuscripts. It offers a critical edition, translation, analysis, commentary, and demonstrates John Tzetzes’ authorship. The detailed reading of the text aims at showing the presence of theatrical effects which characterise these poems, as well as illustrating the author’s poetic technique and interpreting his reproach to Aeschylus. By doing so we will touch upon broader issues, such as the interpretation of Prometheus from a Byzantine perspective and the authorship of the A-commentary on Aeschylus, the most popular among mediaeval students.

The purpose of this study is to find a picture of the involvement of Indigenous Peoples of Tabi Mamta in the process of environmental impact assessment (EIA) in Tabi Mamta customary territory. The method and type of research used is non-ethnographic qualitative research with data collection techniques using limited observation techniques. Data and information in the field will be analyzed using constructivism paradigm. The paradigm of constructivism is based on an interpretive understanding called hermeneutics (hermeneuien) in the sense of interpreting, giving understanding, translating data and information obtained in the research location as a result of social reality. The results of this study indicate that the customary community of Tabi Mamta is a unit of customary community that still has territorial customary territory, has a customary leadership structure, still visible relationship of kinship, cultural values as well as customary norms and sanctions, and has environmental wisdom in maintaining existence Natural resources. In the socio-cultural system of customary communities there are components such as customary stratification, permissiveness, communication, reciprocity, past history, cultural values, customary norms and sanctions, religious and customary leadership. Components in the socio-cultural system of indigenous and tribal peoples play a role in the EIA process in the Tabi Mamta customary area especially in the environmental feasibility decision making process. The components of custom stratification, cultural values and customary norms play a role in the EIA process. In customary stratification there is uncustomary structure in the ondoafi, Iram and Tribal Leadership. Components in a sociual cultural system is a unity resulting from interaction between individuals and groups to prevent environmental damage and disturbance of natural resources. The functioning of urban space in games is often passive, since the city acts as an object of observation, a scenery for the player’s actions. In the Disco Elysium game, the city receives its voice, soul, and will, which the player can observe by activating the “Shivers” skill. This study analyzes how the “Shivers” skill encodes the actual space of the city and what functions it performs for the player. We used the theoretical frame of K. Lynch and identified five patterns of encoding paths, boundaries, nodes, landmarks, and time. Each of these patterns symbolically rethinks the actual space, translating it into the virtual language of artistic techniques. The analysis revealed that the use of a unifying interface for displaying mental chains, including the “Shivers” skill, shifts the focus from interpreting the visual appearance of space to drawing an analogy between the symbolic recoding of this space and the cognitive architecture of the protagonist. Thus the analogy is transformed into a “conciliatory contrast”. There is no need for a total renewal of space while a combination of conflicting qualities preserves, maintaining the essence of each of them.

AbstractFast ice flow on the Antarctic continent constitutes much of the mass loss from the ice sheet. However, geophysical methods struggle to constrain ice flow history at depth, or separate the signatures of topography, ice dynamics and basal conditions on layer structure. We develop and demonstrate a methodology to compare layer signatures in multiple airborne radar transects in order to characterize ice flow at depth, or improve coverage of existing radar surveys. We apply this technique to generate synthetic, along-flow radargrams and compare different deformation regimes to observed radargram structure. Specifically, we investigate flow around the central sticky spot of Whillans Ice Stream, West Antarctica. Our study suggests that present-day velocity flowlines are insufficient to characterize flow at depth as expressed in layer geometry, and streaklines provide a better characterization of flow around a basal sticky spot. For Whillans Ice Stream, this suggests that ice flow wraps around the central sticky spot, supported by idealized flow simulations. While tracking isochrone translation and rotation across survey lines is complex, we demonstrate that our approach to combine radargram interpretation and modeling can reveal critical details of past ice flow.

Over the centuries, interaction between people of different linguistic backgrounds has thriven on the process of translating and interpreting. Wherever people have lived, these language-based activities have continued to promote communication among them, the barrier which the multiplicity of language has caused notwithstanding. This paper takes a look at translating and interpreting within the context of their origin, status, audience, modus operandi, etc. Whereas translating involves the process of writing on paper and is based on a given text, interpreting takes place orally and is not based on any written text. Whereas translating allows for the documentation and preservation of material in a written form for future readers, interpreting takes place on the spot. Whereas translating calls for an audience of readers, interpreting calls for an audience of listeners. The paper argues that though approached differently, the overall aim of translating and interpreting is to build a linguistic bridge among people and nations; to reduce the communication gap among them. It concludes that in spite of the operational variations their singular aim has always been semantics – the search for meaning between different linguistic parties in different settings. The psycholinguistic model serves as methodology.

Buruda is an oral literary work as a regional cultural asset that is relatively important in the community life of Gorontalo. This research is conducted as an effort to preserve and maintain oral literature as part of the Gorontalo regional folklore. The research is aimed at describing the structure and function of buruda oral literature in the community life of Gorontalo. Moreover, this research applies a qualitative descriptive method, while the data collection technique is done by observation technique through recording and note taking, as well as interview technique that is carried out on informants such as traditional leaders and community leaders. The primary data of this research are buruda verses that have been translated into the Indonesian Language. Then, the data are analyzed structurally to discuss content and form. After that, interpreting, describing, and translating the functions of buruda oral literature are carried out. The research finding revealed that the structures of buruda oral literature are in the form of verse that consisted of ten parts as follows: (1) contains an expression of the feelings of people who are in love; (2) warning of the danger of lust; (3) praise to the prophet Muhammad shallalahu ‘alaihi wa sallam; (4) the birth of the Prophet Muhammad shallalahu ‘alaihi wa sallam as the light and guide to the right way; (5) the miracle owned by the Prophet Muhammad shallalahu ‘alaihi wa sallam; (6) the glory of the Qur’an contains instructions for human salvation in the world and the hereafter; (7) the truth of isra and mi'raj experienced by Muhammad shallalahu ‘alaihi wa sallam; (8) the challenges of the struggle of the Prophet Muhammad shallalahu ‘alaihi wa sallam in spreading the message of Islamic treatises; (9) the importance of avoiding sin and immorality because of ashamed to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala; (10) the power of prayer and the importance of bermunajat (praying wholeheartedly) asking for mercy and compassion from Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. Furthermore, the function of buruda oral literature in the community life of Gorontalo contains moral messages in the form of a religious function, ethical function, and cultural function.

Curriculum unpacking, defined as the process of interpreting the intended curriculum into classroom instruction, is important in the overall success of the school curriculum. As a critical process that serves as a bridge between the intended curriculum and classroom instruction, however, there is a paucity of research about it. Hence, this study aimed to describe the curriculum unpacking practices of a teacher. It entailed a qualitative research design specifically a case study to look closely into the single context of a purposively selected kindergarten teacher in a public school. The main data gathering techniques used were key informant interview and document review. The data obtained were subjected to thematic analysis. The result of the study revealed that the participant follows a generally linear process in unpacking the curriculum as noted in the compliance to the minimum standards of the intended curriculum, main consideration of the learner while translating the intended curriculum into instruction as mandated in the law, and alignment of the curriculum and instructional components. However, qualitative probes uncovered possible errors such as misinterpretation of the developmentally appropriate principle espoused by the intended curriculum and discrepancy between the curriculum standards and instructional activities. The implications in practice are discussed in the study.

Misconception is students’ misunderstanding in interpreting a concept within scientific theory. Amongst the biological topics that often cause misconceptions is protein synthesis. Protein synthesis is considered as a topic with complex concepts. This research aims to describe the students’ misconceptions profile in protein synthesis topic and describe the causing factors of students’ misconception in protein synthesis topic. This research is descriptive quantitative using four-tier diagnostic test instrument which consisting of 4 tiers, 1st tier is the question with 5 possible answers, 2nd tier is the level of confidence of the answer, 3rd tier is the 5 possible reasons, and 4th tier is the level of confidence of the reason. This research was conducted during the Covid-19 pandemic, which made it impossible to meet directly, so the data was collected online via google form and google meet. The study subjects were 34 students of grade XII MIPA-4 SMA Negeri 1 Gresik. Results showed that 32.37% misconceptions occurred in the protein synthesis topic. The highest misconception was in the concept of RNA characteristics, with the percentage of 65%. Factors that cause misconceptions were the students’ lack of interest in protein synthesis topic, the teacher were too fast in explaining the information, limited selection of learning methods during Covid-19 pandemic, and the information in the textbook was incomplete and difficult to understand. Implementation testing of models, methods, or learning media can be done to reduce students' misconceptions in protein synthesis topic, especially in the concept of RNA characteristic, DNA replication, and translation process.

The study compares their oral realizations and translations in connection with the various modes of construction of otherness, which can either be a dual opposition between the expected and effective values, with participles and some adjectives, or a gradient between the two values with adjectives. In the case of dual opposition, ungradable adjectives tend to be translated using positive adjectives and there is clear acoustic prominence on the prefix, as in the case of special focus. “Constructed negation” in translation is illustrated by sans + (aucun) NOUN or the suffix -able, and corresponds to greater duration of the prefix. In other cases, the base is acoustically prominent, but translation techniques vary, although four techniques account for 80% of the entries, even if translator styles differ considerably.

Con ello se dibuja un perfil del estudiante que ha puesto de relieve aspectos interesantes. La toma de conciencia de estos aspectos por parte del profesorado y del propio alumnado puede servir, indudablemente, para mejorar en algunos aspectos de la enseñanza de la traducción literaria. A number of papers dealing with the way in which translation is taught at Spanish Universities have been published in recent years. Those papers tried to find out the opinion of students about the education they received by using questionnaires. The same technique was used in papers aiming at following the professional trajectories of Translation and Interpreting graduates, as well as showing the situation of professional translators. The present paper intends to bring the focus to the teaching of Literary Translation at University. 119 Translation and Interpreting students of the Faculty of Translation and Documentation of the University of Salamanca, in Spain, filled a questionnaire aimed at finding out their ideas and expectations about the teaching of Literary Translation, as well as about the profession of literary translator. The results made it possible to get an approximation to the opinions of students on these matters. Some interesting aspects appeared during this research. The fact that both professors and students become aware of these aspects could help improve the teaching of Literary Translation.

This is a descriptive qualitative research that explores about non-person deixis words in surah Al-Baqarah translated by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, which concern in context reference meaning of pragmatics analysis. The data of this research was taken from 222 verses that consist of non-person deixis. The technique of collecting data is document analysis that uses pragmatics analysis approach. The technique of analyzing data is by managing, reading the script, classifying the data, describing, and interpreting. Then checklist for instrument was built of Levinsons theory. The result of this research presents that 1) there are four types of non-person deixis used in surah Al-Baqarah translated by Abdullah Yusuf Ali namely place deixis, time deixis, social deixis, and discourse deixis. 2) There are 452 references of non-person deixis used in surah Al-Baqarah translated by Abdullah Yusuf Ali (the detail in chapter IV of this research). 3) There are context reference meaning in every deictic word in surah Al-Baqarah translated by Abdullah Yusuf Ali that analyzed. AbstractA series of analytical solutions are presented for viscous compacting flow past a rigid impermeable sphere. The sphere is surrounded by a two-phase medium consisting of a viscously deformable solid matrix skeleton through which a low-viscosity liquid melt can percolate. The flow of the two-phase medium is described by McKenzie’s compaction equations, which combine Darcy flow of the liquid melt with Stokes flow of the solid matrix. The analytical solutions are found using an extension of the Papkovich–Neuber technique for Stokes flow. Solutions are presented for the three components of linear flow past a sphere: translation, rotation and straining flow. Faxén laws for the force, torque and stresslet on a rigid sphere in an arbitrary compacting flow are derived. The analytical solutions provide instantaneous solutions to the compaction equations in a uniform medium, but can also be used to numerically calculate an approximate evolution of the porosity over time whilst the porosity variations remain small. These solutions will be useful for interpreting the results of deformation experiments on partially molten rocks.

A common method of tracking humeral motion involves securing a thermoplastic cuff to the humerus with an electromagnetic sensor attached. The data on the accuracy of this technique are limited. This study addressed two questions: (a) How similar are surface and bone-fixed measurements of 3-D humeral rotations? (b) How similar are surface and bone-fixed measurements of 3-D humeral translations? Electromagnetic motion sensors were secured to a bone-fixed external humeral fixator, a surface humeral cuff, and the skin over the sternum and scapular acromion process. The 3-D data were collected during successive slow velocity (10–20°/second) repetitions of humeral active-assisted scapular plane abduction, sagittal plane flexion, and internal/external rotation with the arm adducted. Root mean square errors of surface measures compared to bone-fixed angular and translational values were calculated, and paired t-tests were computed between the two methods. Root mean square errors for humeral rotations ranged from 1° (1%) for humeral elevation during scapular plane abduction to 7.5° (9%) for humeral internal/external rotation. Peak errors were under-representations of 5.7° for internal/external rotation during scapular plane abduction and 15.6° for internal rotation with the arm adducted at the side. Average translation errors ranged from 0.1 to 2.1 mm. Data from this study suggest that dynamic measurement of humeral motion with a surface humeral cuff sensor can be performed for certain slow velocity motions with root mean square errors less than 8°. Caution is called for when interpreting internal/external rotation values, which were underrepresented. Results may vary with one’s age, weight, or general physical condition, with different velocities of movement, or with different movements.

Abstract This paper aims to examine the perspective of fidelity vs. freedom, from the study of the Portuguese translation of Lu Xun’s essays, produced by third year students of the Portuguese-Chinese Translation and Interpreting course of the Leiria Polytechnic Institute, Portugal, during their study in 2014 at the School of Languages and Translation of the Macao Polytechnic Institute. Their translations were published in Estudio dos Três Sabores.During the whole translation process, the inexperienced young translators tried to put into practice translation techniques – considering various possibilities, making revisions and writing self-reflections, while confronting fidelity to the source text with the freedom afforded by cultural and linguistic differences. By analysing the various solutions found by these translators, this paper attempts to point out the dilemma of translation and to bring a new perspective in terms of fidelity and freedom in translation.

Simultaneous interpreting is a complex task where the interpreter is routinely involved in comprehending, translating and producing language at the same time. This study assessed two components that are likely to be major sources of complexity in SI: The simultaneity of comprehension and production, and transformation of the input. Furthermore, within the transformation component, we tried to separate reformulation from language-switching. We compared repeating sentences (shadowing), reformulating sentences in the same language (paraphrasing), and translating sentences (interpreting) of auditorily presented sentences, in a simultaneous and a delayed condition. Output performance and ear–voice span suggest that both the simultaneity of comprehension and production and the transformation component affect performance but that especially the combination of these components results in a marked drop in performance. General lower recall following a simultaneous condition than after a delayed condition suggests that articulation of speech may interfere with memory in SI.

SummaryProfessional interpretation and translation are key issues in the improvement of public health and patient safety in an area of increased migration and multicultural healthcare system needs. Patient safety requires clear and reliable communication to avoid errors in diagnosis, treatment, and neglect of informed consent. Due to the range of languages to be covered, telephone and video interpretation (VI) can be expected to face up to the demands for trained interpreters available on short notice and in more remote healthcare sites.In a pilot project, we implemented a new up to date model video interpretation unit and used a mixed methods approach integrating quantitative and qualitative data in assessing barriers encountered prior to the use of the pilot system and satisfaction with the use of video interpretation in a number of clinical settings, including inpatient and outpatient units, in Austria. Of all respondents (n = 144) 71% reported frequently encountering language barriers, only 37% reported the use of professional interpreters, 81% reported using siblings, parents or other non-professional interpreters, while a considerable percentage (66%) reported using gestures or drawings to communicate, resulting in very low overall satisfaction rate (only 12%) with the prior situation.In the qualitative study the users observed rapid availability, data protection compliance, ability to see the interpreter despite physical distance, absence of potential external influence resulting from personal relationships, user-friendly nature of the technique, legal certainty, absence of the requirement for personal presence, and cost savings as key benefits in the use of the new technology. Of the users of the system 88% (n = 58) rated it as very good (72%) or good (16%).

This article analyzes evidence of translating and interpreting activities (indiscriminately referred to as yi (譯), which also denotes translators or interpreters in classical Chinese) in first-century China between the Latter Han (25–220 AD) Chinese administration and non-Han Chinese minority tribes along the then Southwestern frontier (modern Yunnan and Sichuan provinces). The importance of this archival record to the historical study of translation and interpreting is two-fold. First, it contains crucial details pertinent to translating and interpreting activities in China in antiquity. Second, it documents concepts of yi synchronically, as perceived by three main participants in the interpreting events: the emperor, the frontier inspector, and the frontier clerk cum interpreter. The presentation of what they actually wrote, said, and did in the first-century interpreting setting in China, with close reference to standard histories, objectively depicts the meanings of yi as perceived by these figures at the time.

As corpus-based translation studies continues to expand, researchers have employed data analytic techniques from neighbouring disciplines, such as corpus linguistics, to explore a wider variety of research questions. The field has evolved from early frequency-based approaches to corpus-based translation studies to now include more advanced statistical analyses to understand the complex web of variables encapsulated by the translation process. Big data analytic techniques that originated in data analytics and related quantitative fields could be usefully applied to research questions in translation and interpreting studies. To assess their applicability, this article first outlines what distinguishes big data from general corpora in translation and interpreting studies, identifying how data volume, variety, and velocity are applicable properties to be considered in corpus-based translation and interpreting studies research. Then, the article presents three types of big data analysis techniques, namely crosslingual and multilingual data analysis, sentiment analysis, and visual analysis. These analyses are presented in conjunction with potential research areas that would benefit from these complementary analytical approaches. The article concludes with a discussion of the implications of big data analytics in corpus translation studies, while charting the trajectory of a more quantitative, corpus-based approach to translation studies.

Interpretation plays a role of a paramount significance in sending and receiving messages between people all over the world. It is of vital significance in the international conferences, symposiums and workshops where the meaning must be transferred and exchanged among the participants. In fact, proverbs are considered as one of the most important elements which are used in speech and need to be exchanged among nations around the globe. However, interpreters usually encounter some challenges in interpreting proverbs from English to Arabic or vice versa due to the cultural differences between Arabic and English as well as the lack of equivalents for some proverbs. This study investigates the techniques of interpreting the English proverbs from English to Arabic. The data of this study are collected from two basic well-known dictionaries, namely, the Lamps of Experience: a Collection of English Proverbs by Ba’alabaki (1980) and a Dictionary of Proverbs: English – Arabic by Kilani and Ashour (1991). The analysis of data reveals that many useful techniques can be used for the interpretation of proverbs. Such techniques are highlighted and graded based on their own priorities. The present study provides recommendations for interpreters, translators, researchers which might improve the quality of interpretation and translation of proverbs from English to Arabic or vice versa.
