Abstract This essay revisits some familiar diplomatic encounters between European nations and China in the decades around 1800. It proceeds from a theoretical distinction between diplomacy within an international society and diplomacy between international societies. The set of ideas, principles, and institutions of diplomatic interaction within an international society may be summarily termed its diplomatic culture. Diplomacy between international societies lacks a shared diplomatic culture, involving instead negotiations between different diplomatic cultures. The European embassies to China around 1800 epitomize diplomacy between international societies. The essay examines in some detail the attempts on both sides to make sense of the diplomatic exchange, in which they were engaged: translating documents, documenting actions, and interpreting the events by poetic means. All these attempts turned out to entrench differences rather than induce agreements. This predicament was to be resolved only by violence.

The theme of this paper concerns the main aspects of translating a linguistically and culturally hybrid text, using the example of two Dubravka Ugrešić’s books (1949–2023), Karaoke culture and Europe in Sepia. The author addresses contemporary themes in a globalised and increasingly virtual world, while constantly revisiting the Soviet and Yugoslav communist past through her personal experiences. Existing between languages and interpreting such a diverse literary world requires a profound understanding of historical, linguistic, and cultural contexts, as well as translation strategies aimed at bridging the inevitable spatiotemporal gap that arises between the two versions of the text. The main research questions are: what are the criteria for including or excluding different elements of heterolinguism/ plurilingualism in a translated text? By what linguistic means is it domesticated in a culturally and linguistically hybrid text?

According to the World Health Organization, nowadays, more than 300,000 practitioners in about 100,000 Chinese medicine clinics in over one hundred countries worldwide practice traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Beyond its flourishing application, TCM attracts the growing attention of anthropologists. If International scholars have shown how, in China, the Western biomedical model highly influence both the academic teaching and the practice of TCM, specific studies within Europe, especially in Italy, are still lacking today. Based on an analysis of how TCM is practiced in the city of Milan, my aim is to scrutinize the relation between TCM and biomedicine and, broadly, between modernity and tradition. Through an ethnography conducted in Milan between November 2020 and May 2021, I explore the diverse ways of translating the knowledges and interpreting the practices by local TCM doctors. By means of interviews and observations of medical practices of ten different practitioners, my research led me to identify three dissimilar categories in relation to TCM practitioners in Milan: the “Purists”, the “Integrators” and the “Hybridizers”. Within this contribution, I focus on their similarities and differences, showing how TCM assumes the shape of a hybrid and localized practice.

Introduction: This systematic literature review analyzed published evidence on IgA nephropathy (IgAN), focusing on US epidemiology, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and economic burden of illness. Methods: Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, Embase®, MEDLINE®, Cochrane, and Econlit (January 2010 to June 2020) were searched, along with relevant congresses (2017-2020). Results: Of 123 epidemiologic studies selected for data extraction, 24 reported IgAN diagnosis rates ranging from 6.3% to 29.7% among adult and pediatric patients undergoing renal biopsy, with all reported US rates <15%. No US studies reported IgAN prevalence. A meta-analysis of US studies calculated an annual incidence of 1.29/100 000 people, translating to an annual US incidence of 4236 adults and children. Relative to Europe, the United States had more patients diagnosed with IgAN in later chronic kidney disease stages. US rates of transition to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) ranged from 12.5% to 23% during 3-3.9 years of observation, rising to 53% during 19 years of observation. Across 8 studies reporting HRQoL, pain and fatigue were the most reported symptoms, and patients consistently ranked kidney function and mortality as the most important treatment outcomes. Patients with glomerulopathy reported worse mental health than healthy controls or hemodialysis patients; proteinuria was significantly associated with poorer HRQoL and depression. Conclusion: While economic evidence in IgAN remains sparse, management of ESRD is a major cost driver. IgAN is a rare disease where disease progression causes increasing patient burden, underscoring the need for therapies that prevent kidney function decline and HRQoL deterioration while reducing mortality.

She participated in the movement of mothers of political prisoners as well. But she became more famous in Iran for her lyrical poetry written in a traditional form of ghazal and not for her political activities. The aim of the article is to make the analyses of Simin Behbahani’s poetry and to consider the problems of its translation into different European languages. Such problems can be explained by the different ways of poetry in the eastern and western cultures: 1) the problem of keeping the metrics of ghazal; 2) the problem of keeping the sense of ghazal. Ghazal as the form originated in the Arabic literature was spread through the Near and Middle East culture and it was not known in Europe until 19th century. From the very beginning ghazal was performed against the backdrop of playing stringed musical instruments. According to the last researchers, ghazal became a base for the development of European sonnet. The authors of this article make a short review of the rhythmical features of ghazal and define its main components, such as bayt, matlaa, radif and others, that should be present at the translated text. It is important to keep these components in verse while translating because rhythmical characteristics of the ghazal are primary relatively to its sense. Scientific novelty. Simin Behbahani is known as a pioneer, who combined in her poetry genres and style of qasida and ghazal. This article deals with the translation of the ghazals by Simin Behbahani into different European languages, such as English and Romanian. Various poems by Simin Behbahani were translated by several interpreters who based their work on different reproduction principles of the original text. Metric and rhythmic of Persian verses were not kept even by the best translators into English. Farzane Milani used in her adaptation the free verse (vers libre) which had become the national form in the English poetry of the 20th century. This choise is good for translator who was born in Iran and now works at the University of Virinia. She made Persian verse understandable for native English speaker and focused at the main substance of poetry. In conclusion, Romanian translator reproduced metric and rhythmic features of the English translation but not of the Persian original. That’s why Ukrainian translators must take in account such experience and use the original text for reading.

Abstract Translation is the activity of interpreting and understanding the meaning of a text in another language. The purpose of translation is to produce a translated work that carries the same concept and meaning of the original work to the targeted language with the purpose of spreading knowledge. Such an approach allows works or information from various aspects like society, economy and politics to benefit society. This paper discussed the challenges and contributions of translating Malay works to foreign languages, which can indirectly uplift the Malay language and promote the development of civilisation. The paper utilised content analysis on journal articles, books, chapters and media to examine the contributions and challenges of translation led by the Abbasid Caliphate (749-1256 M). The data collected could show an effective approach to spreading knowledge and the Arabic language to Europe and neighbouring continents. Findings showed that translation played a significant role in the enculturation and development of civilisation within the maxim of knowledge in society. Hence, the internationalisation of the Malay language should be done via efforts to introduce and promote it through translation to major languages worldwide. The same scenario occurred to prominent authors in countries like Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. However, education and politics are among the bigger obstacles to achieving this feat. Overall, this study hopes to contribute to Malaysia‟s translation industry for the globalisation of the Malay language, which could simultaneously empower and dignify the language. Aktiviti penterjemahan bertujuan untuk menghasilkan karya terjemahan yang membawa konsep dan makna yang sama dengan sesuatu karya ke dalam bahasa yang lain bagi tujuan menyebarkan ilmu pengetahuan. Pendekatan ini membolehkan sesuatu karya atau maklumat dimanfaatkan oleh sesebuah masyarakat dalam pelbagai bidang ilmu seperti aspek pemikiran, sosial, ekonomi dan politik. Kajian ini membincangkan cabaran dan sumbangan penterjemahan yang melibatkan karya bahasa Melayu ke dalam bahasa asing yang secara tidak langsung memartabatkan bahasa ibunda selain menyebarluaskan proses perkembangan tamadun. Kajian ini menggunakan kaedah analisis kandungan yang dijalankan pada artikel jurnal, buku, bab dalam buku dan akhbar dengan meneliti sumbangan serta cabaran aktiviti penterjemahan yang telah dipelopori oleh Kerajaan Abbasiah (749-1256 M) sebagai suatu gagasan pendekatan dalam mengembangkan ilmu pengetahuan dan bahasa Arab ke Eropah dan benua berdekatan. Dapatan kajian ini menunjukkan bahawa bidang penterjemahan menyumbangkan peranan yang sangat besar dalam pembudayaan dan perkembangan tamadun ilmu sesebuah masyarakat contohnya pada zaman Kerajaan Abbasiah. Bagi memperkembangkan bahasa Melayu ke persada antarabangsa, usaha untuk memperkenalkan dan mempromosikan bahasa Melayu akan berjaya melalui usaha penterjemahan ke dalam bahasa-bahasa utama dunia. Hal ini juga berlaku kepada pengarang-pengarang besar di negara-negara lain seperti Jepun, Korea, Arab dan Indonesia. RETRIEVING AUGUSTINE'S DOCTRINE OF CREATION: Ancient Wisdom for Current Controversy by Gavin Ortlund. Downers Grove, IL: IVP Academic, 2020. 264 pages. Paperback; $30.00. ISBN: 9780830853243. *With a long career (of some 40 years) and even longer paper trail (approximately 94 books with all but one surviving, between 4,000-10,000 sermons with approximately 950 available still, and nearly 300 letters extant), Augustine holds a central position as one of the most influential of theologians. He is quoted often--and too often as an authoritative proof text for one's favored position. Yet he is not often well understood. Enigmatic and difficult to parse at times, he inhabited a different world than our own. He even inhabited a different world than his own contemporaries, offering innovative and profound challenges that many could not comprehend. This was clearly the case when his great and arduous work, The City of God, was appropriated by Charlemagne's court in the eighth century to defend the creation of the Holy Roman Empire. Augustine's counterintuitive position and his difficult and drawn-out argument made it difficult for them to comprehend how that work not only did not support their position, it profoundly challenged its very foundations. *In some ways, Augustine's reflections on Genesis 1-3 present a similar challenge. Arguably, they are even more difficult to understand and the potential for misunderstanding is indeed high. Augustine's doctrines of creation evolves over his forty-year career and is found in five works (or major sections of works) dedicated to the subject, with numerous comments critical to unravelling his views found in diverse other works (including sermons, rarely read). Translating Augustine is not just a linguistic activity, it is a wholesale, conceptual challenge. Yet as much as he is employed and has had major impact, it is a necessity! *Gavin Ortlund has commendably thrown himself into this challenge and provided a work that is, in many ways, admirable and important. We ought to split his work into two parts, which the table of contents does not make adequately clear. The first chapter, quite long, serves as a prolegomenon attempting a synthetic overview of Augustine's cosmology. Readers here should note that cosmology is a term that one finds regularly in discussions of ancient and medieval approaches to the cosmos, but the term does not signify its current meaning. Cosmology for ancients was a theological and philosophical activity which reasoned through the underlying metaphysics, driving and defining the cosmos. The subsequent chapters, two to five, focus rather on the book's main aim: offering lessons on impact and import for current concerns, as a form of "retrieval" per the title. The distinction between these two sections, that is, chapter 1 and chapters 2-5, is critical, though. For while I found multiple challenges and difficulties with the first section of the work, I would not want that to pre-empt the reader from looking closer as I have virtually nothing but commendation and praise for the major portion of the book, which I will address further down. *Chapter 1 seeks to outline Augustine's cosmology, which is complex, diffused, develops and alters over time, deeply embedded in the philosophical concerns and scientific views of his day without always self-evidently manifesting the views (for example, Stoic physics) and, as noted above, located across a vast corpus of writing and preaching. This is an ambitious task, and perhaps one that no single chapter can meet adequately. I suspect that Ortlund experienced distress over the magnitude of this challenge. However, the way in which he seeks to meet it belies a problem with the work. Who is it written for, the specialist or the student? If the latter, then why does this initial chapter use highly technical language and ideas that will not be readily accessible to those not trained in ancient metaphysics? Yet it is also not apparently written for the specialist, since it leaves out or fails to adequately emphasize core ideas that a specialist would expect to find. Specialists might also be frustrated by how his synthetic treatment relies in places on the work of other commentators and translators and, as a result, evinces some key misunderstandings. These include, for example, tying Augustine's doctrine of deification to immutability, misunderstanding some of the nuances of Augustine's Latin (such as temeritas on p. 88), depending on the translator's interpretive work (for example, presenting Augustine as naming the tree of knowledge of good and evil an apple tree, whereas the Latin is the generic "fruit tree"; it became an apple tree later in Medieval Europe), not sufficiently addressing ontology and privation--central to Augustine's theology--and thereby not appropriately addressing the building blocks of his cosmology, and not always accounting for forty years of personal development as if works from early in Augustine's career could readily be read beside those from late in his life, without sufficiently acknowledging Augustine's growth and development. *Yet, despite its technical shortcomings, the chapter also reads more like a doctoral dissertation written for a narrow committee of specialists, focused on minutiae and using untranslated terms (such as logos spermatikos) that only scholars would value and easily grasp. For a work written apparently as an undergraduate textbook and for informed lay readers, it presents highly technical topics and uses scholarly traditions which make it harder for the nontechnically trained reader to easily approach the subject (such as using the Latin titles of Augustine's works in the footnotes). It lacks tools that would help students: there is no bibliography of works cited or a list of Augustine's relevant works or a substantial index (the brief index does not do his work justice, causing me to think, after an initial cursory glance, that he failed to address key issues which he does, in fact, address). Ortlund clearly wants to make Augustine accessible, but I fear this initial chapter, navigating between technical approaches and synthetic overview, in combination with these other weaknesses, does not readily accomplish that goal. *In addressing questions of concern to modern readers throughout chapters 2-5, however, Ortlund hits his stride. These address valuable, appropriate matters critical to numerous communities: Augustine's (surprising) model of humility on how one interprets Genesis 1-3 (in chap. 2 of the book); Augustine's hermeneutical management of the introductory chapters of Genesis (in chap. 3); the epic challenge of animal death and predation (in chap. 4); and the truly knotty problem of a historic Adam and Eve (in chap. 5). All offer depth, thoughtful engagement, and enrichment and are critical companions to the discussions that preoccupy readers of this journal and dominate many pulpits, church pews, classrooms, youth groups, and the like. The section is capped off with a conclusion which I found to be winsome and profound. It reiterates the key lessons Ortlund finds: the wonder at sheer createdness; humility concerning the doctrine of creation encouraging irenic behavior; acknowledging the complexity involved in interpreting the opening chapters of Genesis; the existence of different, rational intuitions about key matters which we should ourselves note, including the example here of animal death; resisting a tendency to choose in absolute terms between history and symbol, and thereby allowing for ambiguity and incompleteness (the opening of Genesis does not seek to answer every question we wish to pose). While I have noted concerns about the first chapter adequately making Augustine accessible in this book, Ortlund has certainly succeeded at demonstrating topics for which Augustine's thought and model is applicable and important. *Meanwhile, it is also critical that one attempt to translate Augustine's thought for modern readers. Ortlund reminds us of the import of bringing an author as influential and seemingly familiar--but really rather distant and difficult--as Augustine to a modern audience and, moreover, doing so without falling into the trap of simply appropriating the audience's ideas. By engaging Augustine's core set of ideas with integrity and appropriate attention to context, Ortlund helps identify and clarify Augustine's contemporary significance. *Reviewed by Stanley P.
