Abstract:

Abstract:

ABSTRACT Accumulative indirect evidence of the epidemiology of Mycobacterium ulcerans infections causing chronic skin ulcers (i.e., Buruli ulcer disease) suggests that the development of this pathogen and its transmission to humans are related predominantly to aquatic environments. We report that snails could transitorily harbor M. ulcerans without offering favorable conditions for its growth and replication. A novel intermediate link in the transmission chain of M. ulcerans becomes likely with predator aquatic insects in addition to phytophage insects. Water bugs, such as Naucoris cimicoides, a potential vector of M. ulcerans, were shown to be infected specifically by this bacterium after feeding on snails experimentally exposed to M. ulcerans.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Morphological and physiological leaf traits were studied on control and defoliated potted Leandra lacunosa young plants. After defoliation, remaining bottom leaves showed no significant change in net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance values with time, but the leaf transpiration rate was higher. The production of the new leaves was greater after defoliation in top defoliated plants. Bottom defoliated plants increased stem extension rates and net photosynthesis transitorily. Two months after defoliation, control and defoliated plants did not differ in stem length and root dry mass values. In spite of smaller area and photosynthetic capacity, remaining bottom leaves were able to compensate top leaves elimination. The effectiveness of this compensatory response, however, depended on the ability of new leaves to escape from herbivores.

Abstract:
Depression in old patients can be isolated or associated with dementia. In the first instance signs and symptoms sometimes mimic a demented state: disinterest, lack of initiative, mnesic complaints, slowing of thinking, learning difficulties. The EEG and the CT scan are useful in differential diagnosis, the value of the neuropsychological evaluation being compromised by lack of cooperation. In the second case the consequences of depression vary according to degree of severity of the dementia. In mild cases it can transitorily increase memory disturbances. In moderate and severe levels we see more regressive behavior. Sometimes we must wait for the therapeutic effects of antidepressant medication before we can establish the diagnosis with finality. The diagnosis of “pseudo-dementia” is only a provisional concept.

Abstract:
Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (n = 161) were enriched and isolated from samples of vent water, invertebrates, and chimney rocks collected at two deep-sea hydrothermal vents (2000 m) in back-arc basins from the southwestern Pacific: the North Fiji Basin and the Lau Basin. Several types of heterotrophic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria were repeatedly isolated. They oxidized thiosulfate either to sulfate (acid producing) or to polythionate (base producing). In most of the acid-producing cultures, thiosulfate was transitorily oxidized to polythionate. All of the bacteria were Gram negative, 37% were fermentative, and 88% were denitrifiers or nitrate reducers. Numerical taxonomy and analysis of the G+C content showed that they belong to several genera including Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, and Vibrio.Key words: hydrothermal vent, culturable thiosulfate-oxidizing bacteria, numerical taxonomy.

Abstract:
Abstract A selective and sensitive method based on coupling of sequential injection analysis (SIA) and optosensing was developed and applied to the determination of indomethacin in pharmaceutical and urinary samples. After alkaline hydrolysis, the fluorescent product generated from indomethacin is inserted in the flow system, transitorily retained on an active solid support (Sephadex QAE A-25) filling the flowcell, and monitored at 283/371 nm (λex/λem). The system was calibrated for two sample volumes, 100 and 1000 µL. It showed a linear dynamic range of 0.56.5 ng/mL, with an LOD of 0.15 ng/mL and an RSD of 3.9% (n = 10) when the highest sample volume was used. The proposed fluorometric SIA optosensor was applied to the determination of indomethacin in both pharmaceuticals and urine samples, and satisfactory results were obtained.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Backusella genus comprises mucoralean saprobes that inhabit in mainly soil and form transitorily curved (when young, erect at maturity) sporangiophores arising directly from the substratum, with simultaneous production of both sporangia and sporangiola. During a study of Mucorales in soil from an Atlantic Rainforest in Pernambuco, Brazil, one specimen of Backusella was isolated and characterized based on morphological, physiological and molecular data (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and LSU rDNA sequences). The phylogenetic analyses of the isolate revealed that it belongs to the Backusellaceae and is closely related to species of Backusella. The specimen grew better at 25ºC, with no development at 40ºC, and presented conical and cylindrical columellae possessing a central constriction as well as subglobose sporangiospores 7.5–15 × 5.5–10 µm. Based on the evidences of the analyzed datasets, a new species of Backusella is proposed and a taxonomic key for the species of this genus is provided.

Abstract:
The roles of electrical energy no longer need to be demonstrated since the industrial revolution of 1740 based on the use of new sources of energy, of which electrical energy is considered to be one of the greatest revolutions in the world. Despite this, we must note that electrical energy is changing the habits of human activity and, on the one hand, has consequences on its transport, the large quantities of which are transmitted by power lines, forcing them to operate more and more. more within their limits and unplanned outages increase the risk of instability. Storms, industrial pollution, and lightning strikes are the main causes of these unscheduled outages. In regions with a high keraunic level, the reduction of insulation breakdown due to lightning is, therefore, a major concern for designers and operators of HV lines. It is possible to reduce the number of tripping of power lines due to lightning by the proper installation of ground wires and by the appropriate grounding of pylons. In this article, we focus our research on the analysis of the impact of the earthing of the pylons on the performance of HV lines against lightning strikes. Considering these parameters and using the oldest and simplest analytical model as a time-varying current wave whose model is a difference of two decaying exponentials, we brought into contribution Maxwell's equations, the law of Ohm, telegrapher's equations, transmission line theory, and the FDTD method to model lightning-induced voltages as a function of HVAC tower grounding. This study was carried out on the Liminga-Funa 220 kilovolt alternating line in the DRCongo, located in a region where storm activity and industrial pollution are very high. Thus, the results obtained by simulation show that the peak voltage on the components of the HVAC line is a linear function of the impedance of the earthing of the pylon. The impedance value of the pylon earthing less than or equal to 10 Ohm dampens the atmospheric overvoltage and ensures good coordination of the insulation of the line elements in the event of a lightning strike at the top of the pylon for the first bow. But for the return arc taken in this case, the bypass of the insulator is unavoidable. The fractal dimensions of the results of our programs have been compared with those of the figures obtained experimentally.

Abstract:
Abstract C-reactive protein (CRP) is the prototypic acute phase reactant and serves clinically as a marker of inflammation and tissue destruction. When native CRP pentamer was incubated with Streptomyces griseus protease, a newly formed and transient ability to inhibit platelet aggregation stimulated by adenosine diphosphate or collagen was often elicited early during the course of enzymatic digestion. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analyses of the digests revealed that platelet inhibitory activity correlated with altered electrophoretic mobility and reductions in subunit and pentameric m.w. Minimally degraded forms of CRP were also isolated "de novo" from inflammatory fluids and, like their enzyme degraded counterparts, inhibited platelet activation. Dissociation of degraded CRP with SDS followed by the removal of SDS resulted in the separation fragments which inhibited platelet function. We propose that in a degradative environment, such as at sites of inflammation/tissue damage or through the action of serum proteases, CRP may transitorily down-regulate the platelet.

Abstract:
A 55-year-old woman developed a painless, non-ulcerated left upper eyelid swelling over 6 months. Examination disclosed a fluctuant mass that permitted movement of the eyelid skin over the lesion. A full-thickness eyelid resection contained a well-encapsulated cyst with milky contents that was predominantly located in the tarsus. The cyst’s lining was partially composed of segments of ciliated respiratory-type and non-keratinizing squamous epithelia. Immunohistochemical evaluation with cytokeratins 17, 18, and 19 confirmed the staining pattern of a respiratory-type epithelial cell (whether or not cilia were present in the non-squamous epithelial zones). In the squamous region, entirely different cytokeratin results were obtained vis-a-vis the non-squamous regions of the lining. The current lesion is interpreted as congenital and representing an in situ persistence of embryonic ciliated glandular epithelium that normally exists only transitorily. A more remote possibility is that the lesion was the result of ectopic epithelial cells displaced from an adjacent sinus. A recurrence has not developed during 6 months of follow-up.

Abstract:
Pastoral livestock production as a primary source of livelihood is increasingly becoming unsustainable due to the rapidly changing social context, perennial cattle rustling, unpredictable climatic conditions, and rapid population growth. Migration in response to these changes in social context has often increased competition for land and natural resources between the farmers and pastoralists. Using survey data from 1,750 agro-pastoral households, this study examines the impact of cattle rustling and relative deprivation on shaping the patterns of migration in Nigeria. The results of linear regression show that the loss of livestock, cattle rustling, income diversity, literacy, and herd size are significant determinants of migration patterns. These factors were instrumental in the households’ decision to migrate transitorily or permanently. While the findings indicate that relative deprivation is a significant push factor, migration in response to deprivation and cattle rustling may not necessarily decrease inequality due to weak social capital among the agro-pastoralists. In this sense, increasing pastoral social and economic capital is critical to the reduction of inequality and competition for natural capital. As such, rural livelihood enhancement intervention embedded within the context of a conflict mitigation mechanism is required to decrease the perceived relative deprivation.

Abstract:
Increasing Uganda’s low electrification rate is one of the country’s major challenges. Power service is essential to achieve socioeconomic development and poverty reduction, especially in rural areas. This paper shows the advantages of using an integrated (grid and off-grid) electrification model with high geospatial, temporal, and customer-class granularity as the Reference Electrification Model (REM). In universal electrification strategies, REM will help better ascertain the role of minigrids, jointly with grid extension, solar kits, and stand-alone systems. REM has been applied to the Southern Service Territory (SST) to determine the least-cost mix of electrification modes—grid extension, off-grid minigrids, and standalone systems—that satisfies the hourly demand requirements of each customer—residential, commercial, or industrial—considering its individual location. REM incorporates the existing grid layout, the hourly solar local profile, and the catalogs of actual components for network and generation designs. The paper shows that minigrids can provide grid-like service at a significantly lower cost in many circumstances and to a considerable extent. Therefore, minigrid strategies should play a more important role in electrification planning, both transitorily and on a permanent basis, particularly when the central grid suffers from frequent and prolonged blackouts.

Abstract:
In a recent, hospital-based report, we described a small series of 5 patients with unilateral, more or less chronic, severe forehead pain, that could be transitorily abated by anaesthetic blockade of the supraorbital nerve and more permanently abated by ‘liberation’ operation directed towards the nerve exit area at the supraorbital notch. However, epidemiological data on supraorbital neuralgia are lacking. Among 1838 18-65-year-old inhabitants in Vågå (88.6% of the eligible ones), there were 10 who presented the following clinical picture: (1) Unilateral forehead/ocular pain, not diagnosed or diagnosable as any other, particular, unilateral headache; (2) Steadfast unilaterality; (3) Increased tenderness upon pressure over the exit site of the supraorbital nerve (incisura frontalis) on that side —in those who were in an active phase; (4) Foregoing trauma in the forehead/supraorbital rim area, ipsilaterally. In approximately half the cases, there was a moderate, ipsilateral sensory loss. A striking finding was the occurrence of jabs in the symptomatic area, and in synchrony with the neuralgia pain. These 10 inhabitants correspond to a prevalence of 0.5% (or 0.65% if two nontrauma cases are included).

Abstract:
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent complication of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), which is triggered by many conditions in the intensive care unit, including different types of circulatory shock. One under-recognized characteristic of the SIRS-induced AKI is its avidity for sodium retention, with progressive decreases in urinary sodium concentration (NaU) and its fractional excretion (FENa). This phenomenon occurs in parallel with increases in serum creatinine, being only transitorily mitigated by diuretic use. In the present case, we report a situation of two consecutive shocks: the first shock is hemorrhagic in origin and then the second shock is a septic one in the same patient. The SIRS and AKI triggered by the first shock were not completely solved when the second shock occurred. This could be viewed as a persistent avid sodium-retaining state, which may be appreciated even during renal replacement therapy (in the absence of complete anuria) and that usually solves only after complete AKI and SIRS resolution. We suggest that decreases in NaU and FENa are major characteristics of SIRS-induced AKI, irrespective of the primary cause, and may serve as additional monitoring tools in its development and resolution.

Abstract:
Grazing animals excrete urine and create transitorily high pH, nitrogen (N)-replete soil patches. Beneath grazed pasture, we postulated the soil microbial community would be highly responsive to N application. Lesser responses were expected of soils beneath grassland without grazing animals. Soil samples were collected near Lincoln, New Zealand (43.6°S, 172.5°E), beneath pasture regularly grazed by dairy cattle, an adjacent pasture set aside from grazing 20 years ago, and a nearby grassland that has never been grazed. Soil microbial respiration responses to repeated urea (500 kg N/ha) applications were determined by laboratory incubation experiments and the soil pH and water-soluble C content were also measured. The first application induced 0.13 ± 0.04 (dairy farm), 0.15 ± 0.05 (set aside), and 0.20 ± 0.04 (ungrazed) g C/kg increases in microbial respiration over 9 days, excluding carbon dioxide production from carbonate hydrolysis. After a second application, 9-day respiration increased by 0.26 ± 0.04 (dairy farm), 0.41 ± 0.04 (set aside) and 0.20 ± 0.07 (ungrazed) g C/kg. For the dairy farm and ungrazed soils, the microbial communities responded differently to repeated urea addition. The responses included transitory changes in pH and reflected the limited amounts of readily decomposable organic matter.

Abstract:
We present a case of psoriasiform dermatitis developing during the treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis with tocilizumab (TCZ). The keratotic erythema with central healing showed a periodicity of growing worse 1 week after TCZ infusion, and then disappeared within 3 weeks. Skin biopsy showed parakeratosis, microabscess, rete ridge elongation, and abundant lymphocytes as well as a few neutrophil infiltrate in the upper dermis. TCZ is a humanized monoclonal antibody against interleukin 6 (IL-6) receptor. IL-6 plays a critical role in the differentiation from naïve T cells into Th17 cells in cooperation with transforming growth factor-β. IL-6 may be important in psoriasis pathogenesis, and therefore this phenomenon may be the adverse effect. The mechanism of TCZ-associated psoriasiform dermatitis is unclear. The serum IL-6 level seems to be elevated transitorily after TCZ administration, probably due to the competitive inhibition of IL-6 receptor alpha to IL-6. Excess free IL-6 may effect on other IL-6 family receptors. Since TCZ does not alter serum IL-17F level, another cytokine may be involved in the psoriasis formation in our case. Psoriasiform dermatitis during the use of TCZ may be due to relative cytokine balance disturbance.

Abstract:
Abstract Dental caries is one of the most common oral diseases in the world. This study was tantamount to investigate the combinatory effects of an amelogenin-derived peptide (called QP5) and fluoride on the remineralization of artificial enamel caries. The peptide QP5 was synthesized and characterized, and the binding capability of the peptide on hydroxyapatite (HA) and demineralized tooth enamel surface was analysed. Then, the mineralization function of the peptide and fluoride was studied through the spontaneous mineralization testing and remineralization on enamel caries in vitro. First, the novel peptide QP5 could bind on the hydroxyapatite and demineralized tooth enamel surfaces. Second, QP5 can transitorily stabilize the formation of amorphous calcium phosphate and direct the transformation into hydroxyapatite crystals alone and in combination with fluoride. In addition, compared to blocks treated by peptide QP5 alone or fluoride, the sample blocks showed significantly higher surface microhardness, lower mineral loss and shallower lesion depth after treatment with a combination of QP5 and fluoride at high or low concentrations. The peptide QP5 could control the crystallization of hydroxyapatite, and combinatory application of peptide QP5 and fluoride had a potential synergistic effect on the remineralization of enamel caries.

In the elucidation of the reaction mechanism of a catalytic process it is important to establish the reaction intermediates and their possible role in the reaction. In most cases, however, this is not an easy task as a real reaction intermediate exists only transitorily and in a very low concentration on the catalysts. The adsorption of CO2 and the co-adsorption of CH4 + CO2 on Re supported by AI2O3, TiCb, SiCh and MgO have been investigated by FTIR spectroscopy. The dissociation of CO2 was not experienced on the Re/AhCb reduced at 673 K, it occurred, however, on the sample reduced at 1073 K. Addition of CH4 to CO2 , initiated the dissociation on all catalysts as indicated by CO bands at 2041 cm'1. Besides, new spectral features were developed at 1599 and 1397 cm'1 attributed to format species. No bands due to format were detected on Re/Si02 and no format was detected following the co-adsorption of C02-containing gas mixture on the supporting oxides alone. It was assumed that the format species identified in the surface interactions is located on the support, where it is stabilized. ABSTRACTLegionellaspecies are frequently detected in hot water systems, attached to the surface as a biofilm. In this work, the dynamics ofLegionellaspp. and diverse bacteria and eukarya associated together in the biofilm, coming from a pilot scale 1 system simulating a real hot water system, were investigated throughout 6 months after two successive heat shock treatments followed by three successive chemical treatments. Community structure was assessed by a fingerprint technique, single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP). In addition, the diversity and dynamics ofLegionellaand eukarya were investigated by small-subunit (SSU) ribosomal cloning and sequencing. Our results showed that pathogenicLegionellaspecies remained after the heat shock and chemical treatments (Legionella pneumophilaandLegionella anisa, respectively). The biofilm was not removed, and the bacterial community structure was transitorily affected by the treatments. Moreover, several amoebae had been detected in the biofilm before treatments (Thecamoebaesp.,Vannellasp., andHartmanella vermiformis) and after the first heat shock treatment, but onlyH. vermiformisremained. However, another protozoan affiliated with Alveolata, which is known as a host cell forLegionella, dominated the eukaryal species after the second heat shock and chemical treatment tests. Therefore, effectiveLegionelladisinfection may be dependent on the elimination of these important microbial components. We suggest that eradicatingLegionellain hot water networks requires better study of bacterial and eukaryal species associated withLegionellain biofilms.

Abstract:
AbstractLarval stages (cercariae) of schistosomatid flukes represent the causative agents of swimmer's itch (cercarial dermatitis), a waterborne allergic disease. Cercariae of bird schistosomes are the most frequently reported agent. Recent studies on parasite behaviour in mammals showed that infections by cercariae can be linked to more than skin syndromes. Despite the failure of complete development in mammals, bird schistosomes can escape from the skin and migrate transitorily in the hosts. These findings brought novel insights into the fate and potential pathogenic effect of the parasites in non-compatible hosts, including humans. Cercarial dermatitis occurs globally and recently is considered to be re-emerging; however, there are no data on the number of afflicted persons per year. This might be explained by a relatively low interest in human skin infections arising after bathing in fresh water. In addition, the real occurrence of bird schistosomes in the field is known only for a few areas. The paucity of epidemiological/biogeographical data is probably caused by difficulties associated with detection of the parasites in intermediate and definitive hosts. Therefore, based on personal experience and data available in the literature, we have summarized methodological approaches enabling the detection of bird schistosomes in various hosts and environments.

Abstract:
Abstract Cave animals and species flocks exhibit common evolutionary principles. In caves, all traits dependent on the information derived from light lose their biological function. Mutations destructive for such traits, but neutral for the organism as a whole, can persist and accumulate until a trait has vanished. Adaptive radiations start in ecosystems containing open niches. Here, selection on niche-specific traits, such as the viscerocranium in fish, is relaxed owing to the absence of competing species, and viscerocranial variability arises. It is transitorily high in recent and phylogenetically younger flocks, providing new phenotypes. It lessens and is completely lost after directional selection promotes the fixation of phenotypes that are best adapted. In cave animals and species flocks, single traits manifest phenotypic variability owing to relaxed selection. Like the eye in cave species, the viscerocranium can be classified a module, the development of which is encoded in gene regulatory networks. Mutations in these genes can result in new phenotypes. Regarding functionality, these mutations might be destructive and eliminated by selection, neutral and thus persisting, or beneficial and promoted to fixation by directional selection. Given the ancient heritage of teleostean fish, these gene regulatory networks might be prone to mutations at the same loci or to developmental reactions resulting in similar phenotypes in closely related or taxonomically and geographically distant species.

Abstract:
The role of Pax6 in eye development in insects and vertebrates supports the view that their eyes evolved from simple pigment-cup ocelli present in their last common ancestors (Urbilateria). The cerebral eyes in errant polychaetes represent prototype invertebrate pigment-cup ocelli and thus resemble the presumed ancestral eyes. We have analysed expression of conserved eye specification genes in the early development of larval and adult pigment-cup eyes in Platynereis dumerilii (Polychaeta, Annelida, Lophotrochozoa). Both larval and adult eyes form in close vicinity of the optic anlagen on both sides of the developing brain ganglia. While pax6 is expressed in the larval, but not in the developing, adult eyes, expression of six1/2 from trochophora stages onwards specifically outlines the optic anlagen and thus covers both the developing larval and adult eyes. Using Platynereis rhabdomeric opsin as differentiation marker, we show that the first pair of adult eye photoreceptor cells is detected within bilateral clusters that transitorily express ath, the Platynereis atonal orthologue, thus resembling proneural sensory clusters. Our data indicate that – similar to insects, but different from the vertebrates – polychaete six1/2 expression outlines the entire visual system from early developmental stages onwards and ath-positive clusters generate the first photoreceptor cells to appear. We propose that pax6-, six1/2- and ath-positive larval eyes, as found in today’s trochophora, were present already in Urbilateria.

Abstract:
Several animal experimental and clinical studies have shown the effectiveness of melatonin in the treatment of some symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the antinociceptive effect of melatonin against pain associated to PD has not been fully investigated. Thus, the present study investigated the possible antiallodynic and antinociceptive effects of acute and chronic melatonin treatments in Parkinsonian model of rats. This model was created by unilateral injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) into the left medial forebrain bundle (MFB). The electronic von Frey test was used to analyze the antiallodynic effect of melatonin on this PD animal model. In addition, c-Fos immunostaining was also used as a marker of nociception to evaluate the neuronal activity related to the nociception processing. The results showed that unilateral injection of 6-OHDA induced a significant decrease in paw withdrawal threshold in both ipsilateral and contralateral paws, which indicate mechanical allodynia induction. This allodynia was transitorily reversed by apomorphine as a dopamine agonist. Melatonin treatment significantly increased threshold of allodynia. Melatonin administration of both acutely or chronically significantly downregulated the c-Fos expression of neurons in 6-OHDA treated animals. In conclusion, 6-OHDA treatment can induces a bilateral mechanical hypernociception in rats while melatonin treatment produces profound antinociceptive effect. This finding paves the way to use melatonin as an antinociceptive agent for PD clinically.

Abstract:
The effect of maternal ethanol ingestion on 125I-labeled [Tyr11]somatostatin (SS) binding and somatostatin-like immunoreactivity (SLI) in the rat frontoparietal cortex and hippocampus of developing offspring was explored. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were given ethanol in the drinking water before pregnancy, during gestation, and while nursing, whereas controls received a standard diet and fresh water ad libitum. In the ethanol group, food intake decreased as ethanol consumption augmented, with the ethanol calories comprising greater than 30% of the total energy intake during pregnancy. Total energy intake was similar for the ethanol group and normal controls. Maternal alcohol ingestion is associated with an enhanced SLI level in the frontoparietal cortex and hippocampus on the day of birth. This study provided evidence of a selective decrease in SS receptor binding in frontoparietal cortex but not in hippocampus in the 0- to 10-day-old offspring of the ethanol-fed rats. The SS receptor number increased from day 0 to 10 in both control and ethanol groups. However, the affinity appeared to decrease significantly in the ethanol group during this period. At day 30, no differences were found between offspring of control and ethanol-treated rats in any of the parameters. These results suggest that the development of SS receptors in the rat frontoparietal cortex can be transitorily delayed by maternal ethanol ingestion.

The effects of rotenone and adenylates in relation to malate and oxaloacetate metabolism." Biochemical Journal 274, no. 1 (February 15, 1991): 249–55. http://dx.doi.org/10.1042/bj2740249.

Abstract:
The effects of rotenone on the succinate-driven reduction of matrix nicotinamide nucleotides were investigated in Percoll-purified mitochondria from potato (Solanum tuberosum) tubers. Depending on the presence of ADP or ATP, rotenone caused an increase or a decrease in the level of reduction of the matrix nicotinamide nucleotides. The increase in the reduction induced by rotenone in the presence of ADP was linked to the oxidation of the malate resulting from the oxidation of succinate. Depending on the experimental conditions, malic enzyme (at pH 6.6 or in the presence of added CoA) or malate dehydrogenase (at pH 7.9) were involved in this oxidation. At pH 7.9, the oxaloacetate produced progressively inhibited the succinate dehydrogenase. In the presence of ATP the production of oxaloacetate was stopped, and succinate dehydrogenase was protected from inhibition by oxaloacetate. However, previously accumulated oxaloacetate transitorily decreased the level of the reduction of the NAD+ driven by succinate, by causing the reversal of the malate dehydrogenase reaction. Under these conditions (i.e. presence of ATP), rotenone strongly inhibited the reduction of NAD+ by succinate-driven reverse electron flow. No evidence for an active reverse electron transport through a rotenone-insensitive path could be obtained. The inhibitory effect of rotenone was masked if malate had previously accumulated, owing to the malate-oxidizing enzymes which reduced part or all of the matrix NAD+.

Abstract:
Commissural nucleus of the solitary tract (commNTS) lesions transitorily (first 5 days) reduce mean arterial pressure (MAP) in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), and lesions of the tissue surrounding the anteroventral third ventricle (AV3V region) chronically reduce MAP in other models of hypertension. In the present study, we investigated the effects of combined AV3V+commNTS electrolytic lesions on MAP and heart rate (HR) in conscious SHR. Baseline MAP and HR were recorded in male SHR before and for the next 40 days after sham or AV3V lesions combined with sham or commNTS lesions. The AV3V lesions produced no change in MAP in SHR, while commNTS lesions reduced MAP acutely (121 ± 2 to 127 ± 3 mmHg in the 1st and 5th days, respectively, vs. prelesion: 192 ± 4 mmHg) but not chronically (from 10 to 40 days). However, combined AV3V+commNTS lesions reduced MAP of SHR chronically (119 ± 2 to 161 ± 4 mmHg, in the 1st and 40th day, respectively, vs. prelesion levels: 186 ± 4 mmHg) or sham-lesioned SHR (187 ± 4 to 191 ± 6 mmHg). Sympathetic and angiotensinergic blockade produced less reduction in MAP in SHR with AV3V+commNTS-lesions, and there was no relationship between changes on water and food intake, body weight, or urinary excretion produced by AV3V+commNTS lesions with the changes in MAP. The present findings suggest that in the absence of the commNTS, the AV3V region contributes to the hypertension observed in SHR by mechanisms that appear to involve enhanced angiotensinergic and sympathetic activity.

Abstract:
Abstract Response inhibition as an executive function refers to the ability to suppress inappropriate but prepotent responses. Several brain regions have been implicated in the process underlying inhibitory control, including the cerebellum. The aim of the present study was to explore the role of the cerebellum in executive functioning, particularly in response inhibition. For this purpose, we transitorily inhibited cerebellar activity by means of cathodal tDCS and studied the effects of this inhibition on ERP components elicited during a Go/NoGo task in healthy subjects. Sixteen healthy subjects underwent a Go/NoGo task prior to and after cathodal and sham cerebellar tDCS in separate sessions. A reduction in N2-NoGo amplitude and a prolongation in N2-NoGo latency emerged after cathodal tDCS whereas no differences were detected after sham stimulation. Moreover, commission errors in NoGo trials were significantly higher after cathodal tDCS than at the basal evaluation. No differences emerged between performances in Go trials and those after sham stimulation. These data indicate that cerebellar inhibition following cathodal stimulation alters the ability to allocate attentional resources to stimuli containing conflict information and the inhibitory control. The cerebellum may regulate the attentional mechanisms of stimulus orientation and inhibitory control both directly, by making predictions of errors or behaviors related to errors, and indirectly, by controlling the functioning of the cerebral cortical areas involved in the perception of conflict signals and of the basal ganglia involved in the inhibitory control of movement.
