Cripwell, Devin Matthew. "Biomechanical, physiological and perceptual responses of three different athlete groups to the cycle-run transition." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1005184.

Full text
Abstract:
The transition from cycling to running has been identified as one of the key determinants of success in triathlon, as it has been suggested that the cycle may affect subsequent running efficiency such that running performance is significantly altered or reduced. It is also suggested that athletes more adapted to the transition itself, rather than purely running or cycling, may be more efficient during the post-cycle running bout. The current study sought to investigate the effects of prior cycling on subsequent selected biomechanical, physiological and perceptual responses of three different athlete groups. Subjects were selected on the basis of their sporting background, and were divided into three groups – triathletes, cyclists and runners. Experimentation required subjects to perform a seven minute treadmill running protocol at 15km.h⁻¹, during which biomechanical (EMG, Stride rate, Stride length, Vertical acceleration), physiological (HR, VO₂, EE) and perceptual (RPE) responses were recorded. After resting, subjects were required to perform a twenty minute stationary cycle at 70% of maximal aerobic power (previously determined), immediately followed by a second seven minute treadmill running protocol during which the same data were collected and compared to those collected during the first run. Biomechanical responses indicate that the cycle protocol had no effect on the muscle activity or vertical acceleration responses of any of the three subject groups, while the triathlete group significantly altered their gait responses in order to preserve running economy. The triathlete group was the least affected when considering the physiological responses, as running economy was preserved for this group. The runner and cyclist groups were significantly affected by the transition, as running economy decreased significantly for these groups. Perceptual responses indicate that athletes more experienced with the transition may find the transition from cycling to running to be easier than those inexperienced in this transition. It is apparent that a high intensity cycle protocol has limited statistical impact on selected biomechanical responses, while physiological and perceptual responses were altered, during a subsequent run, regardless of athlete type. That said, the ability of transition-trained athletes to transition comfortably between disciplines was highlighted, which may have important performance implications.

Boyle, Jon. "Working "Faster, Better, Cheaper": A Federal Research Agency in Transition." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28231.

Abstract:
This research study explored the theoretical underpinnings of implementing government reform in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), specifically focusing on a management philosophy called Faster, Better, Cheaper (FBC). It is situated within the broader context of Government reform efforts that attempt to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of government organizations in their delivery of products and services to the public. This study employed the Grounded Theory qualitative research methodology that concentrates on a central phenomenon and generates a theory from a category or construct-oriented approach. The objective is to generate a substantive-level theory that describes the practice of FBC within NASA and is grounded in the data collected from the organization. The following research questions guided this study: 1.What is the meaning of Faster, Better, Cheaper for Public Professionals in the NASA organizational environment? 2.What are the interrelationships between concepts of faster, better, and cheaper? 3.How does the technical and cultural structure of NASA influence the implementation of Faster, Better, Cheaper? 4.What are the required workforce capabilities to perform Faster, Better, Cheaper in NASA? The theoretical sample for this study consisted of interviews scheduled with NASA personnel involved in Faster, Better, Cheaper projects. NASA documents and reports were analyzed to saturate the initial 29 provisional categories. A representation of the phenomenon of FBC was developed following the data analysis, including causal conditions, strategies, environmental conditions and context, and consequences. Several findings addressed the meaning of FBC, the interrelationships between the concepts, the impact of organizational infrastructure, and required workforce capabilities. Topics for future research are the nature of risk in public organizations, tools for aligning and measuring public policy alignment and implementation, leadership of public sector teams, and generalizing the findings to other organizations.

Bowes, Margaret Alice. "Veteran adjustment to civilian life : a research portfolio." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/22949.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim: Most veterans have a successful transition to civilian life when they leave the military. However, there are some veterans who struggle to cope and adjust to the demands and challenges of civilian life. The aims of this research portfolio are: firstly to systematically review the published literature regarding the relationship between six emotion regulation strategies (acceptance, avoidance, problem-solving, reappraisal, rumination and suppression) and veteran mental health (PTSD, depression and anxiety); and secondly, to explore psychosocial factors (mental health, stigma, self-stigma, attitude towards and likelihood of help-seeking, experiential avoidance, reappraisal and suppression) that influence veteran adjustment from military to civilian life, and to determine which of these predict a poor transition. Method: A systematic review of the literature was conducted. Strict search criteria were applied and resulted in 23 studies which met the full inclusion criteria for the review. For the empirical study, 154 veterans across Scotland completed a set of questionnaires. Results: The systematic review highlighted significant relationships between the emotion regulation strategies and mental health disorders in the veteran population. The strength and direction of these relationships depended on the emotion regulation strategy and the mental health condition. The empirical study found that mental health, experiential avoidance and cognitive reappraisal predicted veteran adjustment difficulty. Discussion: There are clear links between veterans’ mental health, the way veterans regulate their emotions and the degree to which they adjust to civilian life. This has implications for how veterans are supported when they leave the Armed Forces, in terms of services and health professionals being able to better understand and support their difficulties, to facilitate their re-integration into civilian life.

Jewett, Orval Albert. "High School to College Transition Among Black Males: An Action Research Project." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/4381.

Full text
Abstract:
A participatory action research project involving social workers as stakeholders from high schools and the local community college in Nassau County, New York, provided the basis for an inquiry that addressed the effectiveness and implementation of clinical social work practice with Black male students transitioning to community college from high school. This study addresses how clinical social work practice may be utilized to enhance the experience of the transition process for Black male students from high school to college. Through the use of a qualitative in-depth interview process, 16 school-based social workers provided professional perspective and expertise that resulted in a transformational change project identifying key aspects of psychosocial treatment planning most relevant to the needs of Black male students hoping to persist from high school to college graduation. Social exclusion theory formed the theoretical basis for understanding the socioeconomic and psychosocial experiences of Black male students, whereas grounded theory provided a foundation for theory generation through a process of identifying and classifying emerging patterns and themes within the in-depth interview transcripts. As a result of this doctoral capstone project, key deficiencies in school social work practice, such as the need to adapt to a more community-based form of social work practice, were identified and addressed at a local level through a summary of recommendations, forming the basis for a credible and transferable knowledge base that can be used to improve social work practice. Ultimately, the outcomes of this project improve services for Black male students transitioning from high school to college, and it will lead to positive social change for this student population.

Gordon, Cheryl. "Assessment confidence in the transition to Business and Management studies in HE." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2018. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/25363/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an exploratory study into the concept of assessment confidence development, building upon previous studies in self-efficacy and academic confidence. In particular, this study concentrates on students transitioning from FE to their first year of HE studies in Business and Management and the associated assessment regime. The resultant substantive understandings of experience of this transition have been constructed with the assistance of 11 first year students, during 2 interviews across a year. The first of these interviews was undertaken in induction week and was followed by a second interview at the end of the first academic year of HE study. An inductive approach has been taken to the production of data which has been analysed using thematic analysis and I-poem analysis in order to theorise around the influencing factors and aspects of assessment design linked to the development of assessment confidence. The subsequent findings have emerged through authentic representation of the student voice, confirmed during member checking exercises. The main findings of this study suggest that students may be more widely influenced by their contextual experiences of FE assessment than have previously been recognised. In addition, student experiences of assessment regimes at this level are typified by familiarity, routine, repetition and modelling. In the transition to HE assessments, the students in this study experienced self-doubt, uncertainty and ambiguity leading to perceptions of risk and lack of control. Assessment design aspects of clarity, relevance and authenticity in addition to student choice and freedom are presented as key to understanding how HE educators can mitigate risk and loss of control during this transitional period. This thesis contributes to the wider understanding of how students interact with assessment during transitional phases and in particular into unfamiliar subject areas with distinctly different assessment regimes. This substantive theorising presented builds upon the more domain specific notions of self-efficacy already associated with student 'confidence' in order to better design the assessment experience for students making that transition.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, Interpretivist epistemology and abductive research strategy were used to examine transcripts of sixteen two-hour focused interviews. The research sample was a group of technical experts who assumed managerial responsibilities within their organisations (transitional managers). The subjectively perceived experiences of the transition were examined as well as the respondents' intersubjective interpretations of the transition from the organisational perspective. The aim was to explore the perceived characteristics of the transitional experience. The main findings of this study could be summarised as follows: firstly, it was found that there were three main types of transitional managers: the unwilling, the pragmatic and the eager managers. Secondly, the key motivations to take the manager role for all three categories were higher remuneration, technical peer respect and the respondent's new role as an organisational decision-maker. The third finding of this study was that there were two types of transitions, the complete transition which the majority of the eager managers went through and the technical transition which was experienced by the unwilling and the pragmatic managers. Related to that finding was the link between the type of organisation, its culture and the leadership skills required in that organisation. The fourth finding was that, irrespective of the amount of time in the manager role (six months to eleven years) or the type of transition (complete or technical), all respondents in this study continued to identify themselves as technical experts with the respondents who underwent a complete transition also seeing themselves as managers. Related to this finding was the respondents' continued identification as technical experts being largely due to their need to identify with their peers (other technical experts). The fifth major finding of this study related to a lack of career planning by the respondents and little or no succession and management development planning by the respondents' organisations. In a contribution to the theory of leadership studies, this study examined leadership as a social process, building on the existing leadership concepts and theories and putting them in a social context of subjective efforts by the researcher to interpret the respondents' transitional experiences through typification of the leadership characteristics into seven themes. The need to apply an individual contextualisation was seen as essential to understanding the transitional managers' response to their own transition. In doing so, the study has contributed towards narrowing the existing empirical literature gap on the transition processes. The contributions of this study need to be seen in the context that explorative research such as the one carried out here is not considered generalisable, as its aim was to explore and describe particular phenomena. Nevertheless, insights from this study were eight

Dean, Susan. "Primary to secondary school transition : personal and critical reflections arising from co-research." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/2416.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis starts by presenting an ostensibly straightforward question about how the transition from primary school to secondary school is experienced from a gendered perspective. This question was explored through a research project which involved 4 girls, in their second year of secondary schooling, as co-researchers. What ultimately transpires is a personal and critical account of the research and, importantly, the research process. Implications for practice, which encompass three main areas, are deliberated upon. Firstly, themes relating to the original research question of how girls experience the transition are debated. The findings offer some support to the hypotheses that boys and girls experience friendships and peer pressure differently. In general, girls tend to place greater value on relationships within school. It is suggested that further research is needed to clarify how aspects of the secondary school system can inhibit and facilitate the fostering of positive relationships. Secondly, implications for educational psychology practice are debated. In particular, the importance of adopting a reflexive stance, where the researcher or practitioner‟s values and assumptions are made as explicit as possible, is emphasised. Finally, the discussion also exposes a number of challenges arising from the research process. It is suggested that these challenges offer important implications for researchers seeking to undertake co-research. In particular, it is suggested that a careful consideration of who is most likely to benefit from the research is required prior to undertaking co-research. Furthermore, reflections on peer dynamics throughout the process raise questions about utilising children as co-researchers and situating them as pseudo-adults.

Gatten, Olivia Kaitlin. "Student Transition at a Residential STEM School." TopSCHOLAR®, 2015. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1449.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of this qualitative study was to gain insight into which personal factors most affect student adjustment in a state residential STEM school. Factors from Tinto’s Model of Institutional Departure were used as the framework to capture the transition of gifted high school students from traditional high school to The Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky, a statewide residential STEM school. Tinto’s Model predicts college persistence using pre-existing individual characteristics and institutional experiences. These qualities and experiences were used to form questions about student traits and transition. Questionnaires were administered to Gatton Academy first-year students, parents, and staff members. Participants included 10 students, two parents, and six staff members. The answers were analyzed using deductive analysis. The study found the student participants at The Gatton Academy came from intact families, were often not challenged at their sending high schools, and entered the residential setting with very few study habits but high self-control. The findings suggest that gifted students are highly adaptable to the college environment despite being younger than traditional college age.

Abstract:
Several studies have been published postulating the emergence of the post-modern research system, the research system in transition and the new production of knowledge (Cozzens et al. 1990, Rip and van der Meulen 1996, Gibbons et al. 1994). However, these studies have been largely concerned with the gradual transformation of well-established research systems of Western industrialised countries. The radical transformations of the research systems of Central and Eastern European countries (CEE), following the collapse of the communist regime at the beginning of the 1990s, have attracted a smaller number of scholars (Balazs et al. 1995; Schimank 1995; Radosevic 1999; Dyker and Radosevic 1999, 2000). Prior to this, the developments in scientific organisation have been considered to be either an issue of evolution (in advanced or industrialised countries) or, as in the case of developing countries - a development issue. However, the research/innovation systems of CEE in the 1990s were neither underdeveloped, nor following the pattern of evolution of other industrialised countries, but were forced to change as a consequence of changes in the political and economic order. Furthermore, eighteen years after the fall of the communist regime, the research systems of CEE have developed at different rates, along different trajectories, despite similar preconditions for change. Taking into account the aforementioned considerations, the study investigates two research systems in transition, those of Latvia and Estonia, which along with the Czech Republic have initiated the most radical reorganisation of their research systems. The choice of countries is based on the realisation that despite, at first glance, similar pre-conditions for change, as well as similar demographic factors, political and economic systems, and institutional structures of scientific organisation (which makes these countries easily comparable); these systems appear to have evolved along different trajectories. Clear differences are seen in terms of total state funding allocated for research, as well as contributions from the private sector, R&D intensity, research output in terms of publication, citation rates and patents, collaborative projects and publications (Kristapsons, Martinson and Dagyte 2003). Based on these indicators, Estonia precedes Latvia on all counts; possible explanations for this are the diversified funding mechanisms available, and the multitude of assessments of research and development on the basis of which policies were formed (Kristapsons, Martinson and Dagyte 2003).In view of the overall goal of explaining different rates/paths of development of similarly positioned national research systems, the purpose of the study is twofold. Firstly, it attempts to paint a comprehensive picture of the Latvian and Estonian research systems and, secondly, it compares and contrasts them in terms of the reforms initiated and the outputs, outcomes and impacts of these reforms. Methodologically, the study is largely qualitative in nature and it has been deemed appropriate to present the two countries as separate case studies, yet retaining a common analytical frame to gather primary and secondary data. Secondary data has been collected by drawing on the multitude of archival and documentary evidence and statistical databases available; primary data was collected by conducting semi-structured interviews.

Mimoun, Laetitia. "Revisiting Liminality in Consumer Research : Pursuing Liquid Lifestyles in the Marketplace." Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018SACLH003.

Full text
Abstract:
Consumer liminality is a vital concept in marketing research, usually defined as a transitional state of betwixt and between social positions. It enlightens life transitions, extraordinary experiences, and consumption rituals. This dissertation assesses the conceptualization of consumer liminality and advances its theorization in liquid modernity by exploring contemporary consumer lifestyles which embrace contingency, uncertainty, and ambiguity. The first essay conceptually reexamines the treatment of liminality in consumer research. I identify two distinct forms, transformational liminality and liminoidity, thus challenging the unidimensionality assumption. Countering its celebratory treatment, I highlight the dangers of liminality when it is part of a meaningless transition. This essay contributes to the literature by resolving definitional ambiguities, outlining the concept’s scope, and delineating research directions. The second essay explores the flexible consumer lifestyle, defined as purposefully embracing instability, change, and adaptability in every aspect of life through professional precariousness. Using a combination of long interviews, projective techniques, and participant observation, I question how the frequent life transitions which characterize the flexible lifestyle and could be conceptualized as an experience of permanent liminality, are handled by consumers. Departing from prior literature, this essay contributes to consumer research on liminality by illustrating that permanent liminality is unsustainable for individuals, who need a release from the overwhelming pressures of its pursuit. Further, I identify flexibility capital as what enables consumers to perform successfully this lifestyle and thus, create an escape from the social structure which otherwise compels them to dominated precarious positions. The third essay studies the liminal consumer journeys of consumers who experience repeated cross-cultural transitions. I combine autodriving and long interviews to explore open-ended mobility, a type of international mobility characterized by a high uncertainty regarding the duration of the stay abroad and the next destination. This essay contributes by emphasizing liminal dangers. I identify that liminal consumer journeys put consumers at risk of rootlessness and self-loss and must be compensated by solidifying consumption, which anchors consumers’ identity narratives in crystallized consumption experiences, material objects, and symbolic brands

Abstract:

From the Front Line to the Living Room: The Transition of Female Veterans Back Into Civilian Life. Bretia Arrington Gordon, 2018: Applied Dissertation, Nova Southeastern University, Abraham S. Fischler College of Education. Keywords: veterans, military personnel, military service, armed forces The problem addressed in this study was female veterans faced unique challenges during military service and even more difficult experiences when transitioning into civilian life. Women long served in the military and reported similar as well as different experiences than men, especially in relation to Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). For example, female veterans reported a higher percentage of sexual harassment and gender discrimination than did male veterans. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health issues were also reported differently for female veterans than males. Women were found to be more likely to be diagnosed with a mental illness after returning from deployment. This research was conducted using semi-structured interviews. The questions were broad in scope due to the sensitive nature of the problems faced by the participants. Questions focused upon recurring themes, such as PTSD, military sexual trauma, substance abuse, and impact on domestic relationships. The participants? experiences were analyzed for patterns and trends, and the information was used to encourage future research efforts in the improvement of services for female veterans. The purpose of this research was to collect information from OEF-OIF female veterans who experienced firsthand the challenges of being active duty and a civilian. The study also explored different aspects of issues not immediately identified or researched in depth in relation to this population. This research would help to inform change within the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) system and other organizations supporting OEF-OIF female veterans and families. Findings revealed participants shared similar experiences from their time in the military and during their deployment to serve in OEF and OIF. The accounts of their experiences presented themes of (a) PTSD and other mental health issues; (b) military sexual trauma; (c) discrimination based on gender, race, and rank; (d) different impacts of deployment; and (e) experiences with the VA health-care system. Findings provided a new understanding of the literature indicating the complex realm of what it is like for female veterans to (a) serve in combat, (b) transition back into their lives after deployment, (c) navigate the VA system, and (d) maintain their dignity and integrity while being discriminated against, and accepting and learning to live with PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Findings supported past literature, suggesting female veterans were more likely to need long-term services to assist them as they returned from combat and transition back into civilian life. They needed specific female-centered assistance from the VA to treat them for issues related to physical and mental health, counseling and quality medical services, and housing and employment assistance to deter potential homelessness. Findings also supported the call for the Department of Defense, U.S. Military, and the VA system to acknowledge the issues of discrimination based on rank, race, and gender and to hold those accountable who used it as a means to control and limit the potential of female members of the military.

This study examined how parents experienced their first child's transition to adolescence. A multiple-case qualitative research design was chosen to examine parents' experiences. Family systems theory and family stress and coping theory provided a theoretical starting point. Participants were recruited who had adolescents between ages 13 and 16 and saw their family as normally stressed, indicated in part by an absence of court involvement, substance abuse issues, school failure, and participation in therapy. Ten families were selected: parents from eight of these families participated in focus groups, and five sets of parents were interviewed in their homes. The grounded theory approach to qualitative inquiry developed by Glaser and Strauss guided data collection and analysis. This study identified a complex array of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and contextual factors involved in parents' experience of this transition. A theoretical model was developed to illustrate how specific components of parents' experiences might be interrelated. The process seemed to be initiated when the parents noticed a physical, social/emotional, or relational change in their teenager. Parents responded to the perceived change through their affect, cognition, and behavior. They interpreted what was happening by processes of evaluation, reorientation, and frame. These three components-perception, response, and interpretation-were seen to interact with elements of past and current family context, such as expectations, family dynamics, family of origin influences, and sociocultural change. The overall process involved parents' attempts to regain family equilibrium at different levels of adolescent autonomy and progress toward anticipated future teen changes in ways that either enhance or diminish family cohesion.

Abstract:
Imidazolium trans-[tetrachloro (dimethyl sulfoxide)(imidazole)ruthenate(III)], NAMI-A, is an experimental metastasis inhibitor whose specific mechanism of activation and action remains to be elucidated. In the nucleophilic and reducing physiological environment; it is anticipated that the most relevant and available reductants upon introduction of NAMI-A as a therapeutic agent will be the biologically-relevant free thiols. The kinetics and mechanisms of interaction of NAMI-A with biologically-active thiols cysteamine, glutathione, cysteine and a popular chemoprotectant, 2-mercaptoethane sulfonate (MESNA) have been studied spectrophotometrically under physiologically-relevant conditions. The reactions are characterized by initial reduction of NAMI-A with simultaneous formation of dimeric thiol and subsequent ligand exchange with water to various degrees as evidenced by Electospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry. Stoichiometry of reactions shows that one molecule of NAMI-A reacted with one mole of thiol to form corresponding disulfide cystamine, dimeric MESNA, oxidized glutathione and cystine. Observed rate constants, ko, for the reaction of NAMI-A with cysteamine, MESNA, GSH and cysteine were deduced to be 6.85 + 0.3 x 10-1, 9.4 + 0.5 x 10-2 , 7.42 + 0.4 x 10-3 and 3.63 + 0.3 x 10-2 s-1 respectively. Activation parameters determined from Arrhenius plots are indicative of formation of associative intermediates prior to formation of products. A negative correlation was obtained from the Brønsted plot derived from observed rate constants and the pKa of the different thiols demonstrating significant contribution of thiolate species towards the rate. In conclusion, interactions of NAMI-A with biologically-active thiols are kinetically and thermodynamically favored and should play significant roles in in vivo metabolism of NAMI-A.

Abstract:
While using the Action Research Methodology, this dissertation considers a double perspective for its author as a researcher and public official involved in Mexico's Decentralization Policy Implementation, and also as a policy designer and policy consultant. It narrates two settings where the author had a major involvement from a Federal and sub- national (State) governmental employee position. The said experiences were a top-down policy implementation experience in the State of Guanajuato (1995) and a bottom-up policy implementation process in the State of Nuevo Le6n (2002 onwards). Evidence from the experiences shows that the bottom-up model of decentralization policy implementation performs better in the process of strengthening local government capabilities, 'pulling' the necessary functions, regulations, and resources to make decentralization work, rather than it being imposed or 'pushed' by the central government. To the extent that the main assumption behind an Action-Research experience is that social research and knowledge production that doesn't lead to social change is somewhat useless because any researcher involved within Action Research should serve a two-fold purpose of knowing reality but having as its aim the drive to change it, the main contribution of this thesis is to help local governments in an exercise of self-diagnosis (the Desde Lo Local instrument) of their strengths and weakness in order to set a new local government agenda that stresses governance and sustainability.

Abstract:
Transition to high school occurs for most students in New Zealand. In transition students face new experiences and their ability to cope is dependent on their personal skills as well as the preparation they receive from their primary/intermediate teachers. The students who are behaviourally disordered already experience difficulties in primary/intermediate school and their teachers suggest that they will not cope at high school (Hawk & Hill, 2000). Three primary/intermediate teachers and a high school Dean were interviewed to determine how Year 8 teachers prepare behaviourally disordered students for social transition to high school. The findings show that there is no consistent approach used and the strategies employed are dependent on the experience of the teacher as well as his/her personal philosophy along with his/her school's philosophy. The teachers and the Dean suggest that some strategies used enhance the opportunities for pro-social interaction and others inhibit it. They also suggest that the transition process used does not allow time for dialogue between the sectors, which McGee (1987), MOE (2004) and Sutton (2000) suggest would be appropriate for the behaviourally disordered students entering high school.

Abstract:
An ongoing conversation in the Information Systems literature addresses the concern, "How can we conduct research that makes a difference?" A shortage of high-impact research will, over time, challenge the identity and weaken the viability of IS as an academic discipline. This paper presents the systematic high-impact research model (SHIR), an approach to conducting high-impact research. SHIR embodies the insight gained from three streams of high-impact research programs spanning more than 50 years. The SHIR framework rests on the proposition that IS researchers can produce higher-impact contributions by developing long-term research programs around major real-world issues, as opposed to ad hoc projects addressing a small piece of a large problem. These persistent research programs focus on addressing the entirety of an issue, by leveraging multidisciplinary, multiuniversity research centers that employ a breadth of research methods and large-scale projects. To function effectively, SHIR programs must be sustained by academic and practitioner partnerships, research centers, and outreach activities. We argue that SHIR research programs increase the likelihood of high impact research.

Marshall, Amy C. "Description and Service Innovation in Adolescent Transition within Kentucky State Agency Education Programs." UKnowledge, 2013. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/rehabsci_etds/13.

Full text
Abstract:
Of all Kentucky youth, state agency children are at the highest risk of making unsuccessful post-secondary transitions to adulthood. The intent of both studies comprising this dissertation was to understand and guide transition planning to make future improvements to transitions of adolescents in state agency programs. The Kentucky Youth at Risk in Transition Study was a mixed methods study that identified and described the understandings of student transitions in state agency education programs from the perspectives of youth and administrators. The study included 105 nontraditional education programs funded and supervised by the Kentucky Educational Collaborative for State Agency Children (KECSAC). Data collection included a survey administered to all KECSAC Program Administrators, focus group interviews with KECSAC Program Administrators, focus group interviews with KECSAC students, and individual interviews with KECSAC students. Survey data produced a description of a variety of key aspects of transition census data for KECSAC students. Qualitative data were analyzed using grounded theory. Results indicated that: transition is more narrowly defined within nontraditional schools; key strengths of transition practice are present in nontraditional schools; and coordination barriers within this inter-agency transition system are most apparent in students’ frequent inter-setting transitions between nontraditional and home schools. The second study was the “Building Enhanced Services for Transition” Study. It was designed to generate improvements to transition planning and services in KECSAC programs. Participatory action research was used so that improvements to transition services would emerge directly from the priorities of those concerned, while grounded theory sought understanding of the emerging changes in services for state agency youth across five KECSAC programs. Participants were comprised of twenty-nine education program administrators and staff members. Data collection occurred through semi- structured interviews, researcher reflections, research team meetings, and observations. There were six successive coding schemes throughout the study. A primary finding of the study was the degree to which individual and structural stigmatization of state agency youth impedes successful transitions to adulthood. Understanding the operation of stigma in these students suggests ways in which this primary barrier might be disrupted and post- secondary outcomes for these students at high risk of failure could be improved.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigated the role of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) stigma in program implementation. A case study design comprising qualitative methods provided in-depth, context-sensitive comparisons of adult educator (n = 8) and youth (n = 67) perspectives among programs that provide HIV services and those that provide risk reduction services. Nearly half of the youth participants were male, 42% were female, and 6% identified as transgender. Two thirds of participants were Black or African American, one quarter of participants were Hispanic or Latino, and the average participant age was 19. Although program personnel from all youth service programs in this study are acutely aware of how HIV stigma detracts from HIV education, programs that provide HIV services address stigma differently from programs that provide at-risk services. HIV education differs by language, inclusion, and stigma experiences. Based on the research literature and the findings from this study, structural changes are needed to accurately address HIV stigma and improve educational effectiveness across youth programs.

Abstract:
This thesis explores barriers to widespread adoption of electric vehicles and proposes possible policy solutions. It analyzes main barriers including awareness, upfront cost, and range anxiety, as well as existing policy solutions, and a detailed case study examining policy differences in high adopting versus low adopting states. Awareness and eduction surrounding electric vehicles and their capabilities, financial incentives and market mechanisms for reducing costs, and charging infrastructure and efficiency improvements are examined. Conclusions were formed through interviews with various experts as a method of data collection. It was found that many existing state and local level policies could be scaled to a national level to facilitate rapid reductions in transportation emissions through electrification of the transportation sector.

Abstract:
Nowadays, interesting problems in computational chemistry are found in studying complex systems with a high number of degrees of freedom. It is thus fundamental to provide a new way to handle them with a suitable tool capable of giving us the best compromise between accuracy and reliability using the minimum amount of computational time. In particular, these systems exhibit a high number of conformational isomers interconnected by low energy barriers and an accurate representation of their potential energy surface would allow us to identify the most stable isomer, the global minimum, and the transition state with the lowest energy. The challenge of this project is to provide a tool that helps us in this research, starting from a conformational analysis of four different homogeneous organocatalysts. This work aims to combine the Density Functional Theory accuracy and Molecular Mechanic Force Fields computational properties to explore the potential energy landscape using a Machine Learning approach.

The Afghan conflict changed significantly after the Soviet withdrawal and especially after the collapse of the communist regime in April 1992. External support, which at some point had been running to the tune of $3 billion a year to all sides, rapidly faded and the military commanders increasingly faced the problem of how to fund their armies in the face of a declining propensity of the civilian population to contribute to the war effort. The hold of the parties based in Pakistan and Iran over the field commanders rapidly weakened, even if some of the political leaders had been forward looking enough to accumulate financial resources through the hoarding of military supplies, which were then sold on the black market. The partial financial autonomy of some political leaders of the jihadi movement was not enough to stem the tide towards weaker and weaker links between parties and commanders, not least because the parties were reluctant to spend whatever resources they had accumulated, lest they lose their leverage in the future.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the impact of the transition from diploma to degree on the initial education and training of three para-professions in England; chiropody, occupational therapy (OT) and radiography. It focuses on the nature of and reasons for changes to their initial professional education and training and the potential impact of these changes on their professionalisation. The study adopted a multiple method approach; a historical review, which included documentary sources and interviews with key informants, aimed at identifying how and why these three para-professions wanted to achieve all-graduate entry, and the use of case studies to explore the differences between the diploma and degree courses. It is concluded that the achievement of all-graduate entry for these para-professions was an unintended consequence of the policies of the then government. As a result of the achievement of all-graduate entry changes were made to the respective diploma courses of these para-professions. The extent of these changes were related to the level of control and influence that the professional bodies exercised over the diploma courses. All the degree courses shared the following features: the development of autonomous, reflective practitioners who are life-long learners, an emphasis on theory rather than practice, and emphasis on propositional knowledge and the study of research methods. Although the degree courses for these para-professions achieved approval from HEIs it is argued that degree education is a contested concept. It is apparent that the para-professionals believed that the achievement of all-graduate entry would improve their professional status. However, it is evident from the study findings that it served to maintain rather than enhance their social status and market position. Changes to the initial education and training of these para-professionals were the results of the para-professionals having to respond to prevailing social, political and economic circumstances. If they had not taken this action it is suggested that their social status and market position may have been adversely affected.

"Developing and Testing Transition Strategies for Urban Sustainability: Case Studies in Transition Research in Phoenix, Arizona." Doctoral diss., 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.15990.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Sustainability challenges with severe local to global impacts require fundamental shifts in what industrial societies aspire to, generate, consume, and represent, as well as how they function. Transition governance is a promising framework to support these transformational efforts. A key component of transition governance is the construction of transition strategies, i.e., action schemes for how to transition from the current state to a sustainable one. Despite accomplishments in building theory and methodology for transition governance, the concepts of what transition strategies entail and how they relate to specific interventions are still underdeveloped. This dissertation further develops the concept of transition strategies, and explores how different stakeholder groups and allies can develop and test transition strategies across different scales, in the specific context of urban sustainability challenges. The overarching research question is: How can cities build and implement comprehensive transition strategies across different urban scales, from the city to the organizational level? The dissertation comprises four studies that explore the dynamic between transition strategies and experiments at the city, neighborhood, and organizational levels with empirical examples from Phoenix, Arizona. The first study reviews and compares paradigms of intentional change, namely transition governance, backcasting, intervention research, change management, integrated planning, and adaptive management in order to offer a rich set of converging ideas on what strategies for intentional change towards sustainability entail. The second study proposes a comprehensive concept of transition strategies and illustrates the concept with the example of sustainability strategies created through a research partnership with the City of Phoenix. The third study explores the role of experiments in transition processes through the lens of the neighborhood-level initiative of The Valley of the Sunflowers. The fourth study examines the role organizations can play in initiating urban sustainability transitions using exemplary strategies and experiments implemented at a local high school. The studies combined contribute to the further development of transition theory and sustainable urban development concepts. While this research field is at a nascent stage, the thesis provides a framework and empirical examples for how to build evidence-based transition strategies in support of urban sustainability.

"Discovering Pathways to Sustainability: Small Communities in Transition." Master's thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.9442.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Driven by concern over environmental, economic and social problems, small, place based communities are engaging in processes of transition to become more sustainable. These communities may be viewed as innovative front runners of a transition to a more sustainable society in general, each one, an experiment in social transformation. These experiments present learning opportunities to build robust theories of community transition and to create specific, actionable knowledge to improve, replicate, and accelerate transitions in real communities. Yet to date, there is very little empirical research into the community transition phenomenon. This thesis empirically develops an analytical framework and method for the purpose of researching community transition processes, the ultimate goal of which is to arrive at a practice of evidence based transitions. A multiple case study approach was used to investigate three community transitions while simultaneously developing the framework and method in an iterative fashion. The case studies selected were Ashton Hayes, a small English village, BedZED, an urban housing complex in London, and Forres, a small Scottish town. Each community was visited and data collected by interview and document analysis. The research design brings together elements of process tracing, transformative planning and governance, sustainability assessment, transition path analysis and transition management within a multiple case study envelope. While some preliminary insights are gained into community transitions based on the three cases the main contribution of this thesis is in the creation of the research framework and method. The general framework and method developed has potential for standardizing and synthesizing research of community transition processes leading to both theoretical and practical knowledge that allows sustainability transition to be approached with confidence and not just hope.

Abstract:

The adsorption and decomposition of Mo(CO)6 in zeolites X, Y, KL, Na-mordenite and Na-ZSM5 had been followed gravimetrically and spectroscopically. Mo(CO)6 was readily adsorbed into the pore structures of faujasites and zeolite KL but not into Na-mordenite and Na-ZSM5. Infrared studies showed that the adsorption produced a common adsorbed Mo(CO)6 species whose Oh symmetry was lowered. Subsequent activation in-vacuo at 100°C caused loss of approximately two carbonyl ligands per molybdenum which could be reversed by addition of carbon monoxide. Heating at or above 200°C caused complete and permanent decarbonylation. Zerovalent molybdenum clusters were produced within the pore structures of alkali metal-exchanged zeolites but for HY and LaY, oxidised molybdenum ions were also produced. Further uptake of Mo(CO)6 occurred on subsequent exposure of faujasite samples containing molybdenum to the vapour at room temperature. By repeated adsorption and decomposition of Mo(CO)6, zeolite sample containing up to 157 molybdenum per unit cell had been prepared. The carbon monoxide hydrogenation activity and selectivity of molybdenum-zeolite catalysts varied with zeolite structure and exchanged cation. Molybdenum-alkali metal-exchange zeolite catalysts were more selective to alkenes and liquefied petroleum gas range hydrocarbons (C2-C4) than molybdenum-HY and molybdenum-LaY catalysts. Using a combination of gas chromatography and infrared spectroscopy, a mechanism was postulated for the formation of hydrocarbons.

This study aims to investigate the the conversion process of the family roles and the subjective experience from the adult daughter who was the main caregiver of dementia patients at her primary home. And this study also aims to investigate her primary family interaction context after there were dementia patients at her primary home. There was one formal study object in the study, and this study mainly used narrative study to carry out the study process. The finding of the study was showed by a story, and then text analysis and interpretation were used, finally discussions and conclusions were recommend. The result of the study is stated as follows: 1. Before dementia patients suffering from dementia: the family boundaries entangled, the couple subsystem clashed, alienated, and lost the function, the classes of the power were showed in the sibling subsystem, the model of the family operation was the transition from the feminist social constructionist approach to the couple approach. 2. After dementia patients suffering from dementia: along with the progress of Alzheimer disease evolution and below the effect of the male superiority in Chinese culture, the classes of the power were showed in thesibling subsystem, and adult daughter caregiver’s family role was showed the stages of the conversion, divided into five stages, in order of the conflict period, the task period, conversion period, the friction period, and death decision-making period. In the "friction period", when the adult daughter caregiver’s role lost the function and the family care system unbalanced, the sibling subsystem was taken into the family care system to maintain the balance, and to unloading the duty of the adult daughter who cared her dementia patients alone. When the daughter caregiver’s role function exhausted and she took care of her physical and mental, her role changed from the main caregiver to the auxiliary caregiver, and also because of the ossification belief about the roles, her role changed from the main caregiver to the victim. The influential factors of the "death decision-making period" were the boundaries blurred between the family and the medical treatment. 3. After the death of patients with dementia: the death of dementia patients, the class power of the sibling subsystem, the fuzzy role expectation of the sibling subsystem. 4. In the course of long-term care, religion, and material and emotional support from the hand and foot relations subsystem, the company of her boyfriend and cat, counseling and spiritual growth courses, day care and other factors to let the daughter caregiver not exhaust because of the caregiver’s heavy loading, role strain and role conflict. Finally, the researcher focus on this study’s findings and propose some viewpoints and suggestions for direction of consultation and counseling and the prospective studies.

The purpose of this study aims to explore the female career transition in emerging adulthood(referred to as “EA”), discusses the serendipitous events(referred to as “SE”) and internal resources which help the participant to take advantage of SE. Adopting narrative research, 3 participants received interviews and their stories were analyzed through “Holistic- Content” and “Categorical-Content” approaches. The results are as follows: 1. The process of female career transition in EA (1) Family have an important influence. (2) Career transition in EA ends at returning to one’s interests or values. 2. SE in EA and their influence. (1) The participants either take the initiative to act or passively respond to the SE. (2) Though SE, the participants have access to the resources provided by their acquaintances, and compensate for the shortage of information during EA. (3) One may turn the negative SE to the positive one through one’s effort. (4) SE has the driving force for change. The reasons the participants responded to SE are either the SE are related to their background, are in line with their values, interests, or their need at the time. 3. The internal resources of the participants and how these help taking advantage of SE. (1) Be open-minded and active to take advantages of the opportunities, and comfort oneself. (2) The internal resources of the participants fit in Chinese culture which enable the participants to gain trust to bring about opportunities. (3) The participants happened to have the internal resources needed by the SE. Finally, the suggestions are proposed to helpers, parents, and future researchers.

Abstract:
The number of managers that continue to fail at effectively transitioning to senior levels of leadership still remains unacceptably high, and ultimately impacts company’s abilities to develop succession plans and build effective leadership pipelines. This research project was undertaken to seek insight into the challenges faced by managers as they transition into the role of General Management. The research sought to understand the challenges associated with the transition and identify how successful leaders overcame them. The research was conducted in two phases. Firstly, a quantitative survey of students attending the General Management Programme at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (University of Pretoria) was undertaken. The class of 35 students consisted of managers that had recently moved into, or who were about to move into, the role of General Manager and 29 of these students completed the survey. This survey intended to gain some perspective from currently transitioning managers. The second research phase was qualitative in nature and comprised of in-depth, semi-structured interviews, with nineteen (19) senior Business Leaders who had successfully made the transition. This phase aimed to gather the Business Leaders perspectives on the challenges they faced during their transitions, and how these were overcome by them. The research highlighted the extent and significance of the transition, and identified many challenges associated with it. The findings of the research provided useful insights from experienced leaders about the challenges and surprises they encountered and how they were able to overcome them, and effectively transition into General Management. Moreover it illustrated the extent to which the managers had to change and how their own identities transformed. The need to develop informal relationships and gaining practical experience were particularly strong themes that emerged. In contrast to this, it found that the newly promoted managers did not place as much significance and importance on the transition to General Management as the experienced managers did. This highlighted the extent to which the transition process may be underestimated.

This research aims at getting straight the career course and retirement motivation of excellent tennis players in our nation before retirement and their interdisciplinary career transformation after retirement. This research mainly employs Semi-structure Thorough Interview of Qualitative Research to collect materials. There are six first-division players who were born between 1960 and 1990 and entered junior colleges through 「Higher Education and Tutorship Method for Excellent Athletic Students in Schools over Medium Level」are chosen to be the research objects. The results of the research are as follows: 1. The career of the players Excellent tennis players can not take their study work into consideration in their career, so they generally enter a higher education through 「screening and review」 and 「experiment」. The school provides lessons tutorship, flexible school time, nourishment, scholarship and tuition waiver. Subject ability decides their choice in school and department when they enter universities. They mainly chose tennis because their families guide them to this vocation or were chosen in school’s selection. The enlightenment age of tennis players is between 6 years to 11 years, and their training time is between 5 to 8 hours. In the training process, they may come across lassitude because of overtraining and lack of tutorship in facing pressure. Abstract:
The thesis is an explanation of the transformation of science policy in Australia between 1965 and 1990 using analytical constructs from policy analysis and political sociology to examine the way in which cultural, political, social and economic factors have influenced the course of decision-making about the production and application of scientific knowledge. During these years science policy in Australia changed from being driven principally by notions of the creation and transmission of knowledge to being concerned with questions of economic production. Until the 1980s change was incremental rather than radical due to the conservatism of interest groups, the political ideology of significant actors in the policy community, and the political passivity of scientists. In 1965 the production of scientificknowledge took place in the universities and a few large public research organisations and was extemally non-accountable in terms of the utility of the knowledge produced. By 1990 the production of scientific knowledge has become the keystone of the government's hopes for turning Australia into a 'clever country' with the production of economic wealth based on knowledge and 'know-how' rather than raw materials. The rationale for the change is basically economic: scientific knowledge is considered necessary to supply the innovations upon which a broader system of economic production is to be based. This change has brought into focus the relationship between the political system and the scientific system which forms the core of the science policy process. Politicisation of the science system occurs as the scientific community is drawn into the policy-making process and interaction between the two systems is formalised in new techno-political agencies. The organisation of the production of scientific knowledge, once the province of autonomous scientists, is increasingly under the control of central, corporatised political agencies. A policy community approach, supplemented by concepts of power is the main analytical tool. This approach explains policy formulation and outcomes in terms of the interactions of interest groups. A policy community is seen as that part of a political system that - by virtue of its functional responsibilities, vested interests and specialised knowledge - acquires a dominant voice in determining government decisions in a specific field of government activity, and is generally permitted by society at large, and the public authorities in particular, to do so. Power is exercised in the policy community by organised interests with the capacity to control the resources, rules and ideas which underlie action in the policy arena. The dynamic which underlies action in the science policy community is that of the exchange of knowledge, resources and legitimacy.
