Labaeye, Adrien, and Adrien Labaeye. "The Role of Digital Commons in a Socio-Ecological Transition of Cities." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/21899.
Full textThis doctoral research investigates the role that citizen-driven initiatives can play at the intersection of the urban and digital spaces. It follows three lines of investigation. First, it explores how research about grassroots alternatives for sustainable and just cities may benefit from a particular type of digital commons: collaborative cartographic mappings. Second, it investigates the intertwin of digital commons with physical urban commons to understand how commoning may lead to transformative impacts in the city. Third, it seeks to evaluate the transformative potential of the commons as a narrative of change for sustainable and just cities in the digital age. Methodologically, it relies on action research, primary individual case-studies as well as a comparative case-study analysis. A preliminary result is the identification of grassroots-led collaborative mappings – seen as commoning initiatives – as valuable sources of knowledge about alternative urban economies. Main results compel us to question the classical/naturalist understanding of the commons that tends to consider it as a given. Instead, research would benefit to investigate a commoning process: the reclaiming creation, and use of shared urban resources. And, further, transcending artificial divides between the tangible and intangible facets of the commons, (urban) commoning is best defined as a relational practice of caring for and building partnerships for the reproduction of life in the city. This is all the more important that another significant result of the present work is that, while they may open new potential, digital tools are not central to commoning the city, in contrast other discourses (Sharing Economy, Smart Cities). Epistemologically, the author recommends aligning the effort of researching urban commoning to the Diverse/Community Economies research agenda which calls for performative studies of more-than-human urban commoning-communities.

Full textCities are growing rapidly. As a result, they are exposed to increasing social and urban pressures, particularly in terms of access to administrative, health, housing and employment services. To meet these challenges, they are opting for governance approaches based on digital technologies. But the challenge is not only to appropriate digital innovations, but also to guarantee the rationality of the decisions taken and the fair and effective participation of all stakeholders, particularly residents of disadvantaged neighborhoods. It is in this context of digital transformation that Rabat, capital of the Kingdom of Morocco, aims to make its smart city system responsive to contemporary concerns. It aims to capitalize on its distinctive historical, geographical, administrative and cultural potential. In 2023, Rabat ranked fifth among Arab cities in the Swiss Institute (IMD) ranking, surpassing its neighboring competitor, Casablanca. However, the same study showed that Rabat has a mixed record in the use of digital technologies, particularly in the areas of access to health services, education, leisure and business financing. This observation constitutes one of the key elements which guided us in the choice of the subject of this thesis. Thus, our research problem revolves around the following question: Can we qualify the “Rabat: smart city” project as a democratic, equitable and participatory project? Without calling into question the credibility of this project, the question of social acceptability, particularly of those who should, in theory, be the first beneficiaries, challenges us in several respects. This brings us back to the question initially asked by Vincent Meyer in 2017 concerning the measures taken to ensure that the digital transition itself does not become an additional factor of inequality. To address this subject, we called on the methods and techniques deployed both by geographers and by researchers in information and communication sciences. As this is a joint international thesis at the interface of the two disciplines, the material used is based both on the exploitation of a rich literature for theoretical support and on empirical field studies for understanding the manufacturing process of the “Rabat-intelligent city” project and its operation. This research is organized into 7 chapters comprising 3 levels: The first concerns the theoretical framework, the research problem, the hypotheses and the methodology used. The second addresses the notions of human intelligence and digital solutionism, before addressing the geographical, historical and socio-demographic context of the city of Rabat, then the issues of urban governance. Finally, Chapters 6 and 7 present the lessons learned from this research, trying to highlight the strengths and gaps recorded in terms of participation, social acceptability, communication and financing
Onumah, Chido. "Digital migration: A comparative study of the digital transition of the print media in Nigeria and South Africa." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/667970.
Full textThe Internet is changing how people in Africa and around the world communicate. It has also greatly impacted the way the media operates. In many countries, people are depending less and less on the traditional media (newspapers, magazines, radio, television) for information and communication. Traditional newspaper organisations as we l as journalists in Africa and around the world are learning to adapt and come to terms with the new technological reality. While the Internet revolution in Africa is still evolving, it has created opportunities and challenges that are redefining the way newspapers, journalists and the audience access and disseminate information. This research examines the impact of the digital transition on newspaper journalists in Africa using Nigeria and South Africa as case studies. It reviews the effect and growing importance of the Internet, online newspapers and social media, in shaping the future of print journalism, the newspaper business and audience interaction in both countries. The research argues hat new media is redefining journalism in Nigeria and South Africa. It has not only created new kinds of journalists and audience who are no longer passive receptors of news, it has thrown up new business models for the news industry facing severe glut. The research concludes that this change has clear and far - Reaching implications for journalists as well as newspapers and their audience; that if journalists in Nigeria and South Africa are aware of the importance and disruptions wrought by the new phase in the evolution of the media, there is still missing a coherent formula in dealing with the challenges and that there are a lot of factors some beyond the purview of journalists that are shaping their reaction.
Donevska-Todorova, Ana. "Utilizing Technology to Facilitate the Transition from Secondary- to Tertiary Level Linear Algebra." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/18561.
Full textA common perception among researchers in mathematics education is that the transition between secondary- and tertiary level of mathematics may be problematic for the students. In particular, the exact and abstract nature of the theory of Linear algebra versus its arithmetic-geometric presentation in school appears to be difficult for the novice students. The application of properties for defining concepts at university in contrast to their usage for describing concepts in school points out a possible occurrence of obstacles for learning and discrepancies in procedural and conceptual understanding. The aim of this study is to examine how could upper-high school students develop a conceptual understanding based on concept definition and concept image in connection to multiple modes of description and thinking about concepts such as bi-linearity exemplified by the dot product of vectors and multi-linearity exemplified by determinants. In order to achieve this, I have created a specific teaching/ learning sequence in a dynamic geometry environment (DGE), then implemented it and evaluated it in a high school in Berlin, following a complete cycle of design-based research and conducting a multiple-level data analysis. The findings of the study show not only that widening students' concept images, developing multiple modes of thinking and gaining deeper conceptual understanding can successfully be mediated by dynamic geometries, but also give insights into an eventual theoretical model of how can they be further examined. Moreover, the study promotes authorized open-source interactive teaching/ learning materials for further sustainable practice and research. It opens new research questions about revisiting axiomatic approaches on local levels in upper high-school Linear algebra which may base on the integration of all three modes of description and thinking geometric, algebraic and abstract possibly facilitated by DGE.

Full textThis study aims to research how animation advertising companies have gradually absorbed digital technology in São Paulo from the mid-1980s until the 1990s. By observing their functioning before, during and after the effective implementation of new resources, and, by this investigative approach, the study identifies the facts and data which point toward the impact on the creative process at all its stages. In the review of literature, the analog production model of animation is presented, which allows for conjecturing as to what socialcultural environment has enabled the emergence of animation studios which have left their mark in the history of Brazilian advertising. From a qualitative research perspective grounded on Oral History, it used interviews with producers, to document and gain a clearer understanding of the making of an animation film, in both in the analog as well as in the digital era. By the collecting accounts, research evidence hopes to contribute to a historical review of a particularly fertile moment in the history of Brazilian animation. As well this study documents an audiovisual segment that traditionally is not addressed in academic discussions. As a result, a reflection of the development of the creative process was obtained, not only because of technology used but also by virtue of a set of social-economic-cultural elements which have influenced the fruition throughout times and determined productivity guidelines for the audiovisual.
