Abstract:
Advocates of transit suggest that there are several important social benefits of transit systems—savings in pollution, congestion, and general social costs. Estimates of such savings have been limited to general comparisons with the personal occupancy vehicle (POV) mode usually on a vehicle-miles-traveled basis. Those savings are simulated in the context of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA). It is estimated that between 1980 and 1994, MARTA generated about $2.2 billion in total social cost savings by diverting POV riders to transit. Compared with the POV alternative, MARTA generates an average of about $107 million annually in savings to society even after considering society’s subsidies to transit. Shortcomings of the analysis and policy implications are discussed.

The article deals with the regularities of development of political processes and transit in modern Russia. As a Eurasian country, Russia did not follow the path of European transit, choosing its own path, which is based on its own understanding of the state and rights. The transformation had its own logic and sequence. If the first stage of transit was dominated by the principles of liberalism, the second stage is characterized by the centralization and unitarization of power, the definition of state priorities as the basic values of society.

Abstract:
Good connectivity and accessibility ensure inclusivity of public transport system which is an indicator of a fair society. The modal shift of commuters towards public transit services depends majorly on its accessibility levels. To ensure that commuters have equal opportunities to access jobs, education, and other services, PTAL (public transit accessibility level) is often evaluated. Public transport accessibility levels are a detailed and an accurate measure of accessibility of a point to the public transport network which considers walk access time and service availability. Public transportation is often referred to as an affordable model for every section of society due to its cheap fare price. The major question lies in the inclusivity of public transit services for the economically weaker section of society whether or not public transportation is available and accessible for those who need it or those who cannot afford other mobility services. The present study intends to focus on affordable and inclusive transportation for economically weaker sections. The study is an attempt to assess the issues with public transport services in the city of Bhopal, India for economically backward areas like slums. The research will help in understanding the accessibility level of currently available public transit services by evaluating the PTAL (public transit accessibility level) for socially backward.

Abstract:
Large-scale technological projects are born as visions among politicians and leaders of industry. For such visions to become real, they must be transformed from a virtual existence in the minds of their creators to a reality that can be accepted, even welcomed, by the public, not least by the communities who will become neighbors to those projects. Democracy implies that political decisions over the expenditure of public funds should answer not merely to the partial interests of stakeholders but should be accountable to the 'greater good' of society at large. Since a technological project materializes in what Latour calls a 'variable ontology-world', the greater good associated with it can be expected to be dynamic and shifting. The Hallandsås railway tunnel in southwestern Sweden illustrates how the very premises of the project's organizational logic have changed over time, the discourse of the greater good moving from an economical focus to an environmental one.

In July 2006 archaeologists from the University of Bristol and Atkins Heritage embarked on a contemporary archaeology project with a difference. We ‘excavated’ an old (1991) Ford Transit van, used by archaeologists and later by works and maintenance teams at the Ironbridge Museum. The object: to see what can be learnt from a very particular, common and characteristic type of contemporary place; to establish what archaeologists and archaeology can contribute to understanding the way society, and specifically we as archaeologists, use and inhabit these places; and to challenge and critique archaeologies of the contemporary past. In this report we describe our excavation and situate it within a wider debate about research practice in contemporary archaeology.

Abstract:
The Internet is an evolving ecosystem where a multitude of interconnected networks, or Ases (Autonomous Systems), support global connectivity of end users. By providing economic incentives for routing traffic on behalf of other networks, interconnection agreements between ASes are a cornerstone of the Internet. However, rapid Internet adoption, unrelenting traffic growth, and increasing demands for quality and performance are challenging to cope with, provoke recurrent conflicts over the economic settlement of interconnections, and question the capacity of the Internet to provide critical services. This thesis studies the economic aspects of the interconnections between ASes, identifies challenges hampering the future of the Internet, and proposes solutions to resolve them. We begin by presenting the first analytical and empirical study on remote peering, an emerging type of interconnections that relaxes the geographical constraints of ASes and also facilitates interconnections at a lower cost. Then we introduce CIPT and T4P, two novel interconnection arrangements that reduce traffic delivery costs for the ASes. Because some of the limitations are inherent to the current Internet architecture we end this thesis presenting Route Bazaar, a new Internet architecture that, inspired by the use of the block chain mechanism and cryptographic tools in cryptocurrencies, provides a contractual framework for flexible interconnections with rich policies.

Abstract:
This paper explores Alexanderplatz during the Weimar Period in Berlin. It is looked at from three different perspectives: historical urban plans, Alfred Döblin's novel Berlin Alexanderplatz, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 1980's film adaptation of Berlin Alexanderplatz. Through these three mediums, an argument forms that Alexanderplatz functioned as both a major transit space for movement of transportation and pedestrians, but also the transit space for the movement of ideas and information.

Abstract:
Since the redemocratization process in the Eighties, the political configuration in Brazil passes through important changes. One of them has to do with relational patterns between civil society and State. With the political opening, social movements come back to prominence, whereas the State opens communicational and social participation channels. It widens then the dialogue between state and society and the social movements claim more intensely their demands for public policies. The sixteen years that the Workers‟ Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores - PT) was in charge of the Municipality of Porto Alegre and the period that it ran the State Government represent the leading role in adopting public policies towards solidary economy (SE) in Brazil, which were eventually applied on a nationwide basis. The institutionalization of the claims of several organized social parties since 1990s reveals the intense transit of actors that move between the civil society‟s organizations and the institutional political field. Such evidence is emblematic on the case of experiences of SE, as well. From the perception that there are positions occupied by actors present both at the civil organizations and the institutional political field, it is analyzed the concept of permeability of the Brazilian State to external actors, focusing on a specific pattern of permeability: the institutional transit. The central objective of this essay is to understand the relations between civil society and State taking into consideration its “limits”, to the extent that the presence of the actors in both spheres reveals the fluidity of these “boundaries”. To the realization of this research essay, it was made an analysis of the political trajectory of eleven SE militants that took office at the public administration. These interviewees have in common the characteristic of moving between the SE representative entities, political parties, NGOs and State institutions. Through the analysis of the trajectories, we can establish that the changes occurred after the redemocratization process intensified the relations between State and society, rendering more evident the permeability patterns of the state sphere to extraneous actors and, consequently, less strict the “boundaries” between civil society and state.

Betteridge, Jenie. "The settlement of modernity : a study of the relationship between national polices and local culture and the significance of technology in the transition from community to society on Whiddy Island, Bantry Bay, County Cork, Eire." Thesis, Brunel University, 1992. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/4885.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on an ethnographic study of the inhabitants of Whiddy Island, and focuses on the change from one form of societal organisation to another on this island. The thesis is not an ethnography proper, but an attempt to link the local perceptions of change and the changes in the islanders' daily lives, to the wider political economy. Throughout the course of the study my original intention of exploring the tension between technology and community was replaced with the wider hypothesis that there is tension between modernity and community. Technology was revealed as both a product and producer of modernity, and modern state capitalist societies as the antonym not the synonym of community. The 40 remaining islanders represent the last of the transient phase in which community disappears and is replaced by society. The changes in the daily lives of the islanders were not total nor revolutionary. Rather the products of modernity - both policies and artefacts, were absorbed into the islanders' daily lives, and once absorbed the products of modernity promoted modernity in the daily lives of those using them. Modernity is thus a circular process, yet it settled on the island in layers. Each layer produced a new set of paradoxes and reformed the old practices and the old ideology to fit the new setting. The settlement of modernity culminated in the replacement of community members with state citizens. By focusing on the interrelationship and dialogue between modernity, the state and the citizen the processes by which modernity settled on this small island are revealed. It settled both as a result of the direct intervention of state policies on education, emigration and employment, and as a result of local decisions to embrace mechanised transport, domestic technologies and the mass media. By accepting the policies and the artefacts of modernity, the islanders were prohibited from resisting their transformation from community members to state citizens. The island citizen, like all citizens to-day, has a direct dialogue with, and relationship to modernity, and an indirect one mediated by the state.

This Dissertation investigates the social function of the symbol of God's Kingdom and the role it played during specific periods of the history of the Christian religion, as well as the ways in which was suitable as power of social legitimacy by different groups. To achieve this, we used a methodology that is divided in three moments: as a basic strategy is research used the qualitative method, which will assist in the description of the Kingdom of God, symbol of its meaning, ressignifica??es and evolution that suffered during the periods covered; How to approach and method of data collection was chosen the hypothetico-deductive, through which, from the gap of knowledge that is evident in problem formulated, it is possible to develop hypotheses and test them through the process of deductive inferences; finally, as a method of procedure and data analysis is comparative-historical method, which, at the time investigating the events, circumstances and institutions of the past, can also check similarities and explain differences with other periods, explaining the way the social function of the Kingdom of God symbol was developed in the past and its influence in later periods. One of the hypotheses obtained as a result is that the main social function of the symbol of God's Kingdom play a structuring role and organizer of life in society, through a discursive and symbolizing action plan whose objectives are to create an ideal society through religion. With that, one of the arguments that is driven by this result relates to ambiguity in the use of the symbol that is the result of disputes and group interests, sometimes antagonistic, who dispute the legitimacy and the symbol manipulation.

The implementation of governmental programs of decentralization of water access and management stands as an important chapter in the recent trajectory of state intervention in the Brazilian semi-arid region. Public policies such as the One Million Cisterns Program (P1MC) and the One Land and Two Waters Program (P1 + 2), proposed by the Articula??o Semi?rido Brasileiro (ASA -Articulation in the Brazilian Semi-arid), undergo, currently, a process of consolidation as innovative experiences of social participation in the formulation and implementation of public policies. Several technologies developed as a result of historical processes of interaction established between sertanejo peasants and nature in the semi-arid region, or generated in the realm of civil society organizations or research institutions, started to be developed as an alternative to the hegemonic model of State intervention centered in large scale development projects oriented by the concept of ?drought combat?. ASA was a fundamental actor in the recovery, systematization, valuing and development of several technologies, presented as an alternative to large scale engineering works historically advocated by public policies. ASA's work and the critique of social organizations against the criticism of the drought combat model placed the technological issue at the center of public debate. In a context of enhancing interactions between civil society and the State, enabled by the political democratization of the country, this debate reached the spaces of policy formulation. In the present work, we will try to understand the trajectory of construction of public policies oriented by the approach of coexistence with the semi-arid and how the interactions established between the public power and civil society organizations, influenced the generation, dissemination and institutionalization of the technologies proposed by P1MC and P1 + 2. As conceptual references, we used approaches related to the field of Social Studies on Science and Technology, particularly social constructivism and the Muti-level Perspective. Research methods encompassed interviews with key stakeholders involved in the process of formulation and implementation of the studied policies, analyzing, as well, audit documentation, meeting minutes and technical and executive projects related to the various phases of implementation of the programs analyzed. The research findings show that the interaction between civil society and the State in the legislation process constitutes a key arena in the pattern making and manualization procedures of the technologies of coexistence with the semi-arid
This dissertation explores structures of power from the point of view of empowerment and resistance in a shared economy model, having Uber (since its arrival in the country) as object of study. To this end, it relies on a qualitative method of interpretativist approach through a single case study. By identifying the agents' discourses of the urban mobility socio-technical system, in the voice of media vehicles and specialized websites, this research proposes to analyze how power structures are organized. The study lists three perspectives, an ?economic model?, a ?business model? and ?sustainable development?, built to group the ?two sides of the same coin?, empowerment and resistance, proposing a ?conversation? between them. It presents a view of the relationship with the collectivity through two mechanisms, also of opposing forces: ?quest for legitimacy? and ?reinforcement to the status quo?. In a complementary way, it proposes a discussion section about uberism and its variations. Among the aspects listed in this section, issues of regulation and characteristics of the so-called Uber economy stand out. It brings, as theoretical basis, concepts of the Transition Theory for Sustainable Development, the Multiple Level Perspective (MLP) and an applied study that links sharing economy to the notion of socio-technical systems. With this, it seeks to demonstrate the ?game? of forces between empowerment and resistance in the Brazilian context of the socio-technical system of urban mobility. A combination of technological trajectories that have been destabilizing and pressuring the existing socio-technical structures pointed out for the existence of transitions to sustainable development.

Abstract:

Abstract:

In the recent years, due to the medical treatment, science and technology, society process speedily, which extend a national’s average life-span. Meanwhile, it urges the speed of aging of population. At present, Taiwan has already been an aged society. We can predict that it will be 19.5% senior population in 2003. In 2040, the aged population will become 25%, which meant in every four people, there will be one aged. Consequently, aging of population will be more obviously. The traffic’s autonomy and active ability of aged is not as convince as younger. Contrasting to the modern year, they would likely to be ignored or biased. Therefore, in this background of studying, mass transit must improve something in their system and facilities; thus, they can answer readily to the change of the population in the future. This research uses statistic analysis software SPSS/PC 10.0 and Microsoft Office EXCEL to do data analyze. Also, we make use of methods such as Reliability Analysis, Descriptive Statistics Analysis, Regression with Dummy Variables, Paired T test, Important-Performance Analysis, called IPA …etc to address further blocks of substance, information, system and sense. According to each of the methods as above, we make up the order of improvements- chief reformation, second reformation, continued reformation and final reformation. In the light of these barriers, figure out what it result from and how do aged feel. Finally, provide some policies as consult to help the units to manage the oncoming advanced aged society.

Abstract:
AbstractThis book has introduced two new (linked) models for greyfield precinct regeneration—place-activated and transit-activated GPR—with a new set of processes to enable them. The need for new design, planning, and engagement tools that must be integrated into all urban development is also seen as key to unlocking greyfield regeneration. Designs for such precincts have proliferated, but planning systems are still hindering their implementation, especially those systems related to land-assembly issues in the established, occupied middle greyfield suburbs. Planning must change, and a potential way ahead involves the planning processes demonstrated in this book. A first step involves district greenlining, which enables identification of strategic planning challenges and priorities for action at a district scale along a transit corridor (transit-activated GPR) or in precinct-scale areas in typical middle suburbs with high redevelopment potential (place-activated GPR). Their key attributes are gleaned from the previous chapters and summarised in this chapter. A final plea is made here for partnerships to be created from the engagement of all stakeholders: government, community and civil society, innovators, and developers. Greyfield Precinct Redevelopment Authorities established within state governments as part of a federal Better Cities 2.0 program could guide this transition.

Abstract:
AbstractSignificant transformations in the migratory landscape of Greece have been observed recently. In practice, the mixed flows of migrants and refugees have modified the role of Greece as a migrant-receiving country. Immigration, in terms of either transit or settled immigrants, has become a major policy issue; additionally, it has mobilized national authorities, international bodies as well as formal and informal civil society organizations. Changes in the immigration landscape, along with adverse economic conditions, has led to further efforts by public authorities in the effective management of refugee flows and reducing the risks of irregular stay for a significant number of migrants. Despite significant developments in the legislative framework for the integration of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers (MRAs) into the labor market, their access to employment remains more of a secondary issue for policy actors.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Covid-19 pandemic has an impact on migrants’ return desires and actual returns across the globe. Border closures in the face of pandemic lead to the panic mobility of those returning home. The ensuing lockdowns and economic difficulties restricted migrant workers’ access to income and protection, pushing them to return. The pandemic brought evident risks for the regular migrants’ access to healthcare, financial security, and social protection, forcing them to consider the return option too. For irregular migrants, the pandemic further increased the risk of forced returns, including detention, deportation, and pushbacks. For all migrants, decisions are marked by a deep dilemma between staying and returning. Meanwhile, receiving, sending, and transit countries, as well as international organisations are involved in return processes by providing logistics, on the one hand, and stigmatising returnees as carriers of virus, on the other. This study is based on desk research and analysis of the scholarly literature, reports, and grey literature from international organizations, civil society reports, scientific blogs, and media reports. An emphasis on returns provides us broader insights to evaluate changing characteristics of migration and mobility in ‘pandemic times’, the governance of returns, its consequences, and the rhetoric about returnees.

Abstract:
AbstractTime banks have become a popular type of civic organization constructed to facilitate egalitarian economic exchange through a community-bounded currency. Especially after the recent economic crises in Europe, the rise in the number of time banks has been accompanied by relative transience and sometimes short lifespans. We adopt a relational perspective to explore the dynamics of decline in the civic engagement of a time bank in southern Germany. Using methods of longitudinal social network analysis, we analyze the relational processes and individual trajectories of members within the emerging transaction network over a period of eight years. Rather than explaining why, we have found how relational trajectories of members through a structure of core and periphery have led to creeping decline in activity and membership. Given the repeated observation that time banks and other types of alternative economic practices are often characterized by considerable volatility and potential collapse, relational thinking and network analysis are especially suited to unpacking the underlying relational mechanisms that shape these outcomes of volatility and demise.

Abstract:
This report is comprised of five substantive elements. The first is crafting a scientifically sound framework for identifying landscapes within the metropolitan areas we studied. The second is applying those Place Typologies and spatial analysis to economic and demographic change for the transit system in each metropolitan area. The third is analyzing how real estate markets respond to transit system proximity with special reference to the Place Typologies. Fourth, this is followed by specialized studies into how urban form and society are shaped by transit systems. The fifth is providing an overall perspective of our research as well as a framework for unlocking the potential to leverage economic benefits of transit to advance social well-being.

Abstract:
This article is based on the evaluation of the German research funding programme “FONA - Forschung für Nachhaltigkeit” (Research for Sustainability.) It reflects upon the methodological challenges confronting the evaluation. These challenges result from the specific objectives and design of the FONA programme (a strategic portfolio of heterogenious interventions). FONA’s ambition is to fund activities under the emerging field of ‘sustainability research’. The core characteristics of sustainability research are: interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research processes; orientation towards transferring the research results (into society) and the interdependency with a wider system and global perspective.
