Savvina, Olga V. "Transgenderism: Bioethical Issues." Chelovek 34, no. 1 (2023): 68. http://dx.doi.org/10.31857/s023620070024828-7.

Abstract:
The article analyses bioethical problems related to the concept of transgenderism and its understanding in the framework of biomedical discourse. The concept of “transgenderism” is linked with medicine, and gender dysphoria (International Classification of Diseases, 11th Edition) in particular. At the same time, the concept of transgenderism interacts with the social context. The article shows that the perception of transgenderism and transgenders by society has an impact both on the medical discourse and the notion of transgenderism in its context, and on the perception of “ordinary” people, or cisgender people, which is due to the gradual normalization of transgenderism. Thus, the concept of transgenderism requires an interdisciplinary approach and ethical, philosophical and bioethical consideration. Since the analyzed concept is directly related to medical problems, this study is based not only on bioethical studies, but also on sources in the field of medicine and sociological studies related to medicine. The article also analyzes the problem of applying the biomedical principles nonmaleficence" and principle of autonomy by Beauchamp and Childress, that have specifics applied to transgender children. This is due to the connection of transgenderism with another problem that lies in the interdisciplinary field —suicide. A number of studies on the quality of life of transgender people, as well as encyclopedic literature, mention suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts of transgenders. The article shows how the reinterpretation of transgenderism and its normalization change the boundaries of medical discourse, deducing transgenderism and suicide from medicine. The author concludes that the normalization of transgenderism and the change of its place in the medical discourse entails not only a transformation of medical discourse, but also affects other concepts like suicide, changes the approach to the treatment of transgender children, making the therapy of such children questionable from bioethical viewpoint.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTRepresentations of transgenderism in popular culture reflect our deeply held beliefs on the nature of sexuality and gender. This paper compares representations of transgenderism in the U.S. and Thailand, societies with very different views on sexuality and gender. Cabaret shows featuring cross‐dressed performers in Bangkok and Las Vegas are compared. Differences in the topics treated, styles and attitudes of the performers, and audience/performer interactions are examined. Our observation is that the cabaret performances reveal the different underlying cultural understandings of sexuality, gender, and the phenomenon of transgenderism in the two societies.

Abstract:
This paper examines the moral issues involved in the acts of transcending gender and sex. Attempts are made in answering such fundamental questions as: Is transgenderism necessary and beneficial? Does transsexualism necessarily imply transgenderism? Are natural rights violated by the acts of transcending sex and gender? What implications do development in trangenderism and transsexualism hold for our conventional linguistic resources, identity and interrelationships? Ought humans to be allowed freedom to choose to transcend gender and sex? What criteria should be used in avoiding bigotry against androgynous and in harmonizing relationships with their physician? We review the current state of clinical research with transsexualism and transgenderism, the history of transsexual research, the major moral arguments for and against the practices of transcending gender and sex, and the new ethical dilemmas sprawled as aftermath. The paper critically assesses the arguments on the dividing line of the debate. This paper establishes that the reasons offered for artificial intervention in traversing sex and gender are not sufficient and morally convincing enough. It concludes that instead of the predominant current attitude of aggressive intervention with naturally unique sexuality, together with its attendant discrimination and moral resentment against transsexuals and transgenders, it is more ideal to engage on the one hand, in an in-depth discussion with the concerned people, listen to their worries and see ways in which their problems could be addressed through counseling. An on the other hand, there is a need for public discourse and public awareness on the fluidity in gender and sexual orientation so that people’s attitude to this new development can be better sharpened. Abstract:
The current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders has created a paradox in the treatment of gender dysphoria, in part by redefining the disorder. The new definition implies that the individual’s body, not his or her mind, is disordered, regardless of whether the body shows any sign of abnormal development. Thus, the manual has created a situation where a perfectly healthy body is considered disordered, while a mind that perceives that healthy body to be wrongly sexed is considered healthy. This leads to erroneous and dangerous treatment of the individual.

Abstract:
This research investigates the linguistic implications of transgenderism with the objective of determining the impact of transgenderism on existing gender theories. The orientation of this research is situated in the linguistic field of pragmatics and adopts Yule’s (1996) classification of presupposition as the theoretical framework for this study. The research problem is hinged on the fact that disruptive processes create upheavals for existing structures such that the affected structures require critical rescue. In this connection, transgenderism and its attendant complications pose strong challenges for gender pragmatics. The data is a real-life video, captioned “Sorry, I’m A Man”, collected from JERRY SPRINGER – Transsexual Tell All official channel on YouTube. The method of this research is qualitative. The methodological paradigm is interpretive, based on content analysis. The relevance of this research is based on its contribution to resources geared towards salvaging humanity from adulteration and destruction, particularly being that language and gender are essential constituents of the existence of human beings.

Abstract:
Japanese anime has gradually become popular in the worldwide animation market since the 1980s and 1990s. But it is only in recent years that it has begun to receive academic attention as part of popular culture studies. This paper focuses on gender transitioning in Japanese anime and its relationship with transgenderism. After a brief introduction to the history of gender transitioning in Japanese anime, it critically reviews related literature on Japanese anime and transgenderism. Through an analysis of specific work Kmpfer, which centers on gender transitioning, this paper explores transgenderism in Japanese anime. This paper argues that the subgenre of gender transitioning anime is not progressive, but instead reinforces male dominance and concepts of gender binary. Researchers of Japanese anime seldom pay attention to gender transitioning as a subgenre, and scholars of gender studies rarely consider how Japanese anime, with its huge influence on transgender communities in Japan, affects the way Japanese people perceive gender transitioning. This paper connects the two fields to examine issues that have often been neglected.

Abstract:
Transgenderism is a difficult issue in medicine, although it has accompanied humans almost since the beginning of mankind. It includes transsexualism – incompatibility of mental sex and registered sex. Transgender people seek to change their gender through hormone therapy and surgery. In their work, physiotherapists may encounter transgender people at various stages of therapy. In order to avoid causing additional psychological burden for transgender patients, it is necessary for physiotherapists to know the specifics of transsexualism and the issues they should pay attention to while practicing their profession. The aim of the work is to show what transgenderism is and how a physiotherapist should work with transgender people.

Abstract:
Transgenderism is a concept that has been prevailing in the society from the Vedic period and is acknowledged by both the society and people. Their presence and significance can be observed by brushing through the records like myth, legends, epic, etc. left by our predecessors. Yet, people in the present day society are still biased against the transsexuals and holds resistance towards them in the name of social taboos. Though they are forthcoming, legally recognized and are involved in many sectors, their status in the present day society is still between the rock and hard place especially in India, a so-called ‘religious’ nation. Thus an analysis has been done on the perception, significance and the acceptance of transsexuals through their portrayal in Hindu Mythology and modern day literature. Abstract:
Transgender can refer to any individual whose gender identity differs in some way from their birth or biological sex. A significant step in the modern conception of transgenderism was the separation of gender as a social construct from biological sex as a given at birth. Despite India showing progress in various medical, economic, and social fronts, the care of the transgender individual is still encumbered by the various biases and taboos that people hold. But this was not true in antiquity. Unlike the present era, Hindu mythology has always shown us many examples of transgender individuals thereby proving that they were also a part of our society. It is only in recent times that they have been at least given the necessary social security and an ability to integrate into the community. Furthermore, these individuals are subjected to stigma and biases that make them prone to both medical, as well as mental health issues. Ayurvedic science has a detailed explanation regarding the third gender called Napumsaka. Having learnt about the causes of Napumsaka in our science, it is our duty to ensure the production of healthy Beeja for developing a healthy upcoming generation. Keywords: Transgenderism, transgender, Ayurveda, Napumsaka.

Abstract:
We are referring to transgender people born as a man and living as a woman (pedi), transsexuals born as a woman and living as a man (peden), and transsexuals (pedu, Ali) in one word. In the second Tantra of Thirumanthiram, three hymns, 471, 472, and 476, have recorded transsexuals as Ali. These songs contain the news about the birth of Thirunar. It says that this body has been created by the Supreme Being in the form of light to have the characteristics of a mother and father of life, and if the sperm that appears in the male during sexual intercourse is more, the child born will be male (male), and if a woman's heart rate is high, the child born will be a girl. If this sukhilam and suronitham both appear equally mixed, then the person born will be born transgender. And it also says that if both the male and female have equal left and right breaths during sexual intercourse, the child will be born transgender. In devotional literature, the rhetoric of Ali is used next to men and women in places where God is worshipped. However, only in the 1872 song of Thirumanthiram, the word "Pedu" is used while worshipping the Lord. This article examines the stories about the birth of transgender people as told by the Thirumanthiram along with the basic descriptions of transgender people.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The gender that is officially assigned at birth (male or female) is based on physical characteristics. However, it may not be compatible with gender identity – this is the way we feel and think about our gender. A transgender person is someone who has or manifests a different gender identity from the gender identity assigned to him at birth. A transgender person may choose to manifest their gender identity in a variety of ways. To make more permanent physical activity it is essential to use surgery and hormone therapy. This is a time-consuming and costly process that does not always involve complete gender reassignment. Transgender people experience transphobia and discrimination because of their gender identity, which is mistakenly associated with sexual orientation. The misunderstood concept of transgender causes that transgender people encounter intolerance, a lack of empathy, and the non-existence of safe social and legal spaces. This is mainly due to a lack of knowledge on the fundamental issues of transgenderism. Complex judicial procedures for sex reassignment, lack of funding for hormonal treatment and surgical genital correction, and the inability to marry are the cause of depression and a still high percentage of suicide attempts and suicides in this social group. Hence, it is important to draw social attention to the problems faced by transgender people and to disseminate knowledge about transgenderism.

Abstract:
This essay outlines the contours for Christian sexual ethics in the context of late modern concept of ‘sexuality’ and the state of affairs in current Western culture. On theological-anthropological grounds the essay distinguishes between sex and eros and proposes a definition of sexuality; basic biblical-theological themes point to a Christological-eschatological approach, including a plea for ascetism and sexual selfdiscipline. The essay then discusses a number of practical-ethical topics, including sexuality in marriage, cohabitation, masturbation, transgenderism and homosexuality.

da Cruz Pacheco, Victor Augusto. "“Not that her being black had anything to do with it, for me”: Blackness in Emma Donoghue’s “The Welcome”." Estudios Irlandeses, no. 18 (March 17, 2023): 161–71. http://dx.doi.org/10.24162/ei2023-11470.

Abstract:
The paper aims to analyze the construction of the character JJ in Emma Donoghue’s short story “The Welcome” (2006). The story portrays Luce’s sexual awakening for JJ, the new resident of the women-only cooperative living residence, The Welcome. The shyness of JJ and her supposed indifference to the attempt at a romantic approach and friendship made by Luce is a reaction to the process of transgenderism. If, as the Argentine critic Ricardo Piglia (2000) argues, all short stories narrate two stories, the first is a frustrated love story, and the second is about JJ’s revelation as a transgender person. The critical intervention undertaken in this article challenges and exposes internalized images and racial regimes of representation by demonstrating that the signs and elements which prepare the reader for JJ’s revelation represent her as an abject character. From being fundamental to the theory of subjectivity (Kristeva 1988, McAfee 2004) to a signifying practice of the body and sexuality (Butler 1999), abjection is a common signifier of blackness (Scott 2010). By intersecting race, gender, and sexual identities, the short story fails to represent JJ as a complete subject because it articulates stereotypical images around blackness and transgenderism, casting, at once, both terms as abjection. Thus, the centralization of Luce’s desire and the representation of JJ as an abject character suggest the impossibility of intimacy for the black queer body within the homonormative parameters of gender, sexuality, and race.

Abstract:
Is the body a grid or a window? For Gilles Deleuze, as for most post-structuralists, the body does not express the person but rather functions as a surface upon which desire writes. Deleuze’s aesthetics of the surface echoes the inchoate convictions of transgenderism. In contrast, for classical Christian aesthetics, the beauty of the surface is an expression of depth. Hans Urs von Balthasar’s theological aesthetics is analyzed along John Paul II’s theology of the body, in which the body expresses the person. I close with a trinitarian analogy of the body.

Abstract:
This research investigates a neglected topic within both transgender studies and religious studies by analyzing ex-gay movement discourses of “transgenderism” from the 1970s to the present, focusing primarily on the US-American context. The oppression of transgender people in the US and globally is fed and fueled by the religious, scientific, and political discourses of the transnational “ex-gay” movement, which provides the ideological and material foundation of Christian Right politics. Using critical discourse analysis of ex-gay texts, we analyze the implications of these discourses in the individual, interactional, and institutional dimensions of society’s gender structure. This movement is one of the most insidious—and overlooked—sources of cisgenderism and transmisogyny today, constructing gender variance as sin, mental illness, and danger—with catastrophic consequences for transgender people, and those along the transfemale/feminine spectrum in particular. Finally, we discuss the public policy implications of these discourses.
