Kamat, Rajeev Gurunath. "The principle of additivity and the proeutectoid ferrite transformation." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30682.

Full text
Abstract:
This study critically examines the additivity of the proeutectoid ferrite transformation. The study has been carried out in two parts with the first part involving experimental verification of the additivity of the proeutectoid ferrite transformation and the second part a theoretical assessment of the additive nature of the ferrite transformation with the aid of mathematical models. Austenite-to-proeutectoid ferrite transformation kinetics were measured under a number of isothermal, stepped-isothermal and continuous-cooling conditions for three plain-carbon hypo-eutectoid steel grades (AISI 1010,1020 and 1040) using a dilatometer and a Gleeble 1500 thermomechanical simulator. Isothermal transformation kinetics were characterized using the Avrami equation. The stepped-isothermal transformation tests were designed to experimentally assess the additive nature of the austenite to proeutectoid ferrite transformation by measuring transformation kinetics partially at one temperature and after a rapid temperature change to another temperature. Results on the 1010 and 1040 steels showed that the proeutectoid ferrite transformation with polygonal morphology is additive under changing temperature in that the ferrite transformation kinetics at the second temperature are quite similar to the isothermal kinetics at that temperature. Stepped-isothermal transformation measurements were made on the 1020 steel with the resulting ferrite morphology either remaining Widmanstatten at both temperatures or changing from allotriomorph to predominantly Widmanstatten at the two temperatures. In both cases the results showed additive behavior. However, the stepped-isothermal test in which the proeutectoid ferrite was transformed to an equilibrium amount and equilibrated at the first temperature and then rapidly changed to the second temperature was not additive. Characterizing the isothermal formation of proeutectoid ferrite in the three steels using the Avrami equation resulted in a reasonably constant value of n and the b parameter increasing with increasing transformation temperature. Early site saturation was evident in a number of test specimens. In the second part of the study, two mathematical models with planar and spherical interface geometries were developed to theoretically assess the additivity of the proeutectoid ferrite transformation. A finite-difference numerical technique was employed to describe the austenite to ferrite diffusion controlled moving-interface problem for a system having finite boundaries. A test of additivity of the proeutectoid ferrite transformation was made by predicting the ferrite growth kinetics and the associated carbon gradients under stepped-isothermal conditions. The predictions were consistent with the observed experimental additivity of the proeutectoid ferrite transformation in the 1010 steel. The spherical model predicted isothermal ferrite growth kinetics compared more favorably with the experimentally measured kinetics of the 1010 steel than the planar model. An unusual phase was detected in the 1020 steel. A number of tests were performed to measure the isothermal transformation kinetics of the new phase. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning-transmission electron microscopy (STEM) were used to further investigate the structural details in this new phase. The results indicated that the new phase is a type of bainite but having some of the characteristics attributable to massive transformation products.

Mrozik, Donald R. Jr. "Transformative educational leadership| A ritual critique of principal practice." Thesis, Lewis University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10003577.

Full text
Abstract:

This dissertation explores the need for critical transformative leaders who critique oppression within schools and have a desire for social justice. This study attempts to learn more about the principal practices that maintain or disrupt the status quo and what ritual patterns emerge in relation to the work of principals. Two public elementary school principals were observed over the course of a three-day period to better understand the challenges that critical transformative leaders face in the field of education. Four lessons emerged regarding the ritual patterns of principals studied: (a) an emphasis on solidarity, which creates ends that support status quo practices and restricts the development of dialogue centered on social justice issues, (b) the need to expose the hidden curriculum through praxis and work toward liberation, (c) a limited resistance in leadership practice, and (d) that a theoretical understanding of social justice leadership is not enough for transformation to occur in schools. The lessons learned in this study suggest that the neoliberal influences placed upon public schools and public school principals are a major obstacle preventing principals from doing critical transformative work. Furthermore, the academic coursework that principals are involved in is not a sufficient condition for doing critical transformative work. These themes suggest that there is a great need to find ways to open dialogue amongst principals, school staff, parents, and those who make policy decisions so that these groups can begin examining oppressive conditions in schools. Reflection and action against unjust policies are essential to aspects of praxis for which dialogue can be used as a vehicle for change.

Tiu, Conrado. "A qualitative study into the inner leadership of transformative California school principals." Thesis, Pepperdine University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10027828.

Full text
Abstract:

The 1983 publication of A Nation at Risk gave birth to an effort to reform K-12 schools and increase student achievement all over the United States. More than 30 years later, the school reform efforts have grown into immense industries with marginal effect. Major legislation and programs have been launched throughout 3 decades, with No Child Left Behind legislation and Common Core States Standards Initiative being the latest and biggest endeavors, still with minimal outcomes. These efforts follow and run along with many years of structural changes such as Voucher, Small, Pilot, and Charter Schools. The problem of effectively transforming K-12 schools into places of high student achievement remains intractable.

The principal’s role by its unique position in the educational delivery structure and its very nature is key, and may be the single most determining factor in the failure or success of a school. There are very few studies that focus on principal leadership and its effect on student achievement outcomes. All studies and most literature on principal leadership and effectiveness put most attention on traits and observable behaviors. However, it is important to look at the inner world of principals, for this influences, if not determines, the traits and behaviors they exhibit in their leadership. There are no known studies that have focused in on the inner states and experiences of effective school principals.

This phenomenological study represents a seminal effort to study the inner experiences of principals. The participant selection was done through criterion type purposive sampling to link this study to leadership effectiveness. Only principals who were able to transform their schools from failing into successful according to the objective California State Standards of Adequate Yearly Progress were included. This sampling method also enabled the study to look deeply into the inner phenomenological experience of these transformative principals.

The study findings yielded data compelling enough to propose a conclusion of effective school transformation and proposed a model to illustrate how the inner experiences of principals fit into effective school transformation. The study also presented its implications, limitations, and recommendations for future research.

Thesis, Paris 10, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA100123.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2000, Chili promulgated a new Code of criminal procedure that deeply shook the foundations of the previous procedure. This reform is based on the idea of a complete change from the former legislation by having criminal procedure rotate around the key concept of adversarial debate. The development of this principle was allowed thanks to the innovative distribution of the tasks bearing on those involved in the trial, such as the appearance of the Public Prosecutor who has recovered his function of criminal prosecution, which had been so far handled by the judge. In order to affect the whole trial, the adversarial principle carries out its effects at every stage of the proceedings. It leads to a ruling that grounds its legitimacy in the active participation of the parties in the proceedings. Consequently, the law of evidence was modified and the legal hierarchy of evidence gave way to the principle of free assessment of evidence. Yet, the adversarial debate can only develop and be effective through the setting up of specific mechanisms. Therefore, a reworking of the status of the actors of the criminal proceedings has been designed to prevent any breach of the adversarial principle. Regarding the possible breaches of the adversarial principle by the judge, these are prevented by the obligation bearing on the judge to give grounds for his rulings, as well as the modification of his status. Finally, the judicial remedies were modified and rethought in order to ensure the efficiency of the adversarial principle. Thanks to this reform, Chile made a real legal revolution, thereby completing its transition to democracy

Gandi, Appala Naidu. "Martensitic transformation in TiNi based shape memory alloys : a first principles study." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/10729.

Full text
Abstract:
The martensitic transformation in TiNi-based shape memory alloys has been investigated using various theoretical methods. The direct method for ab initio lattice dynamics is used for calculating phonon dispersion relations in austenite (B2) and martensites (B19, B19′). Normal mode symmetries in a B2 crystal are determined. Vibrational modes in the B2 crystal are labelled according to symmetry properties of their polarisation vector. Normal modes with imaginary frequencies are observed at the locations of experimentally observed soft modes. While labelling normal modes, the published mode symmetry label of a soft transverse acoustic (TA2) mode with a [Mathematical formula appears here. To view, please open pdf attachment] polarisation at [Mathematical formula appears here. To view, please open pdf attachment] is corrected to Σ2. Irreducible representations of the soft modes are used for determining the order parameters for various martensitic transformation paths experimentally observed using group theoretical methods. Accuracy of the interpolated frequencies in the phonon dispersion relations is assessed by using three different supercell sizes and by calculating the elastic constants from the slopes of the acoustic branches at the Brillouin zone. Born et al. derived a relation between the force constants and elastic constants for a general crystal. Further simplification of this relation is possible for a B2 crystal because of its symmetry. This simplification is derived by applying elementary group theory. Elastic constants calculated with the simplified relation are in agreement with the elastic constants calculated from the slopes of the dispersion relations. The self-consistent ab initio lattice dynamics (SCAILD) formulation is derived for an ordered compound. Precautions that need to be taken while practically implementing this formulation are discussed. The effect of Hf or Zr addition to a binary Ti-Ni system is studied by considering one configuration at each of five compositions from 0 to 25 at.% Hf or Zr. Elastic constants are calculated following a homogeneous deformation method. Selected normal mode frequencies are calculated using the direct method.

Abstract:
As society becomes increasingly digitalised, pressure is put on public organisations to keep up with technological developments. Thus, digital transformations, which is a strategic relocation of the business, have become essential for organisations. Digital transformations are associated with complexity and a high failure rate, partly due to organisational barriers and the necessity of structural changes and possessing several dynamic capabilities. Private organisations have led the way in the era of integrating technology with business, and public organisations have attempted to follow. As a result, governing inspired by private organisations have been developed for public organisations, namely new public management. However, this governing does not cover values essential for public organisations, e.g., public value, nor facilitating digital transformations. Governance that enables adaptation and responsiveness as well as creating public value is necessary, e.g., adaptive and agile governance. This thesis aims to investigate digital transformation in public organisations and the effect governing principles have on it. The study also explores the potential of adaptive governance and if digitalisation can enable municipalities to work with sustainability. To answer this, an exploratory study is conducted, which includes a case study, and a framework is constructed based on a literature review together with four in-depth interviews with scientists. The framework is then applied to the case study, consisting of 11 semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that digital transformations of public organisations can be conducted without considering governing principles. However, governance can affect how successful the transformation is and what value creation it can bring. Using governance that does not facilitate the transformation could impact its success. Adaptive governance can solve many issues in municipal digital transformations, but may not solely be the solution. It emphasises learning and trial and-error and observes the transformation through an ecosystem perspective. However, the practical implications of it are limited as no methods exist. Thus, combinations with other governing principles may be required. Additionally, digitalisation cannot enable municipalities to achieve sustainability aims on its own. Instead, digital technologies are tools that the municipality can use to achieve sustainability. The study contributes to research by investigating the effect governing principles has on digital transformations of public organisations in a Swedish context, which previously was lacking. The framework can provide a guide and analysis tool for public organisation’s digital transformation, and shows potential to be applied in practice.

Abstract:
Based on the assumption by Cochran-Smith and Lytle (1993), educational scholars need insight on the “particulars” of what works for classroom teachers within the context of their own classrooms. This dissertation is a self-study that addresses my work as a high school Multicultural Literature teacher and the impact of how my own philosophical/theoretical belief system resulted in significant transformative learning experiences for students as demonstrated in their feedback. Using intercultural competence, value-creation pedagogy, and compassion as theoretical frameworks that encourage greater social cohesion and collective participation, I used autoethnography as my primary method of investigation to treat data through an analytical, self-reflective, and interpretive lens within the cultural context of my classes. Types of data included personal memory, self-observational, self-reflective, and external data, such as end of the year anonymous student evaluations, personal memoirs, journal entries, notes, course documents, past student assignments, personal communications, and a blog, collected from my 13 years of teaching. By sharing and examining my ethical/moral-motivation in relation to the positive feedback from students, I demonstrate how my pedagogical interactions and relationships with students manifest through value creation/culturally responsive pedagogy, the empowered voice, intercultural dialogue, transformative learning, and the development and nurturing of empathy and compassion. The study shares personal insights into the elements and processes that contributed to the overwhelmingly positive feedback of students throughout the study. Recommendations suggest greater research and discourse in developing a pedagogy of compassion.

This qualitative case study explored the role central office leaders played in recruiting, developing and retaining principal human capital in Lawrence Public Schools. One of the key strategies of central office transformation is the creation of assistance relationships with principals, which serves as the conceptual framework for this study. Data was gathered from interviews with central office leaders and principals as well as a document review. The results of the study found that central office leaders targeted principals with certain characteristics and recruited candidates from within and outside of the district. Central office leaders provided in-district professional development and engaged external organizations in the process. Work environment and a focus on cultivating local talent contributed to principal retention. Findings further indicated that the assistance relationships developed between central office leaders and principals contributed to principal development and retention through their impact on the work environment. Recommendations include continual examination of work environment and development of assistance relationships for their contribution to principal human capital. Future researchers may continue to contribute to the growing body of literature by examining these findings and offering a longitudinal view of this practice. This strand’s findings may provide insights into practices to recruit, develop and retain principals in low-performing districts

Abstract:
Organizations recognize the need to change the traditional business model for a more digital and agile one. Therefore, companies have begun to transform digitally, seeking to be more competitive in a changing environment. However, this process is relatively new, and in Peru few have managed to implement it positively. This research includes bibliographic compilation, interviews, processing surveys to workers of the 4 main banks in Peru, and the analysis to develop statistical estimations that could make us recognize the main factors that should be prioritized to have an efficient development in their digital transformation process. By this way, this research collect data from the main banks in Peru and analyze opinions and perceptions of their employees in order to make exploratory and descriptive estimates about the process. Research considered interviews of experts from different sectors, including members of the analyzed banks and finally 70 surveys were carried out, of which 59 were validated for processing. However, due to the time and confidentiality limitations, it was not possible to reach a larger sample size, so it did not allow us to make a conclusive analysis at a statistical level that can be used as a model for the other companies. Finally, two approaches were identified in the investigation in order to obtain an efficient development of the transformation process: putting the client and the collaborator as center, considering limitations in the process and recognizing the objective that leads the change.

Abstract:
Abstract : This thesis describes the implementation of corporate culture changes at a Desjardins credit union branch and analyses how the process was achieved while ensuring it was in line with co-operative values and principles in the current context. The research is based on a unique case study for which data was collected in real time over the course of three years of regular observation. The thesis is qualitative in nature and shows the importance of instilling a renewed sense of co-operation among managers and employees, using new metaphors to convey its full meaning. It also stresses the need to better understand the different stages for building a co-operative business culture and provides a three-phrase model for transforming corporate culture within a co-operative business, which adds to the body of work on the topic. Furthermore, the case study provides better information on the crucial role played by the leader and managers and on essential qualities for a successful transition to a co-operative business culture.

Abstract:
District and school leadership are essential to the success of our students and our schools. While extensive conceptual literature describes leadership characteristics, there are few empirical studies that address the daily reality of schools. In addition, additional research is needed describing how principals maneuver within the context of schools and school districts. This phenomenological study explored how one elementary school principal understands and enacts leadership and to what extent she employs intentional strategies to facilitate change. The purpose of the study was to offer a rich profile of one elementary school principal's practice to understand how a principal constructs meaning, deploys action, and employs strategies to affect change. The results reveal this principal uses vision, the intentional strategies of expectations, modeling, decision-making processes, reflection, authentic conversations, and stories to facilitate change within her school. In addition, she maintains a human resource focus establishing relationships and building capacity in others as leadership strategies. The principal did not employ the same intention or strategies in relationship to the district or community, however. Results further indicated the district is also acting as a barrier to the implementation of leadership for change. Results of this study have implications for practitioners and future research. Practitioners can employ similar strategies as well as gaining awareness of the importance employing intention and political skill with the district. The results also highlight the need for additional leadership research as well as research investigating the role of the district in support of schools.

One of the key strategies of central office transformation is the creation of assistance relationships with principals (Honig et al., 2010), which serves as the conceptual framework for this study. Data was gathered from interviews with and observations of central office leaders and principals as well as a document review. The results of the study found that principals were granted broad autonomy in several areas of school leadership that resulted in improved student outcomes. Findings further noted that central office leaders engaged in assistance relationships and employed the key practices in their efforts to support principals. Principals reported that central office leaders employed these practices in each of the four decision-making areas of building leadership; budget, staffing, curriculum and assessment, and scheduling. While enacting autonomy for principals in building decision-making, central office leaders executed a “customer-service culture” of support. Recommendations include continual examination of assistance relationships among central office leaders in support of principals’ autonomy in the context of a turnaround district. Future researchers may continue to contribute to the growing body of literature by examining these findings and offering a longitudinal view of this practice. This strands’ findings may begin to provide insights into strategies that will add to school improvement efforts for chronically underperforming schools and districts

Abstract:
It has been the desire of the ANC government ever since it came to power in 1994 to develop a unity of purpose and spirit that cherishes and celebrates the diverse nature of the South African population in terms of culture, language and religion and to transform existing inequalities that are deep-rooted in South African educational history and religion in particular. In order to satisfy this desire, a whole plethora of legislation and policies was developed. Amongst the developments entailed in these laws and policies were religious rights and freedoms guaranteed to all South Africans as well as the establishment of democratic structures vested with powers to govern schools while school principals manage them. In terms of education legislation, one of the functions of the governing body of a school is to develop and adopt a school policy on religion (as per the study) which is accordingly implemented by the school principal. It is in the policy implementation stage that the school principal is expected to play a mediating role and resolve possible conflicts erupting due to different religious interestThis study is based on the assumption that the management and leadership training they received and the position they hold as school managers and leaders, enabled participating school principals to mediate the implementation of new religion policies. The research question driving this study was “How do school principals deal with implementation of the National Policy on Religion and Education in schools?” Informed by this question the focus of the study was to explore “how principals describe and experience their mediating role in implementing the religion policy within an existing religious context in schools”. Following a qualitative research approach a phenomenological research design was employed in order to understand and describe the meaning of the lived, felt and narrated experiences of school principals. Data were collected by means of narrative interviews where twelve school principals pursuing postgraduate studies with the University of Pretoria and who have been in education for at least ten years, told their religion in education stories. These stories were subsequently transcribed, analysed and interpreted to determine the impact of principals’ past religious experiences and their management training on their implementation of religion policies at their schools. This study found that in dealing with the National Policy on Religion and Policy (2003) implementation in schools, participating principals ignore the policy in preference of maintaining the status quo. When faced with conflicts related to religious interests, they partially sub-contracted into the policy. They did not seem to consider transformative mediation as a possible leadership strategy for conflict resolution in the existing religious context of schools. The study also found that amongst these principals, there were those who displayed a confident attitude, values of openness, generosity and integrity and had used their past religious experiences to transform the quality of conflict interaction in schools. My recommendation in this regard would therefore be threefold. One, Higher Education Institutions should provide appropriate training by introducing suitable courses that will yield adequate knowledge, skills and opportunities for professional attitude, value attainment and determination for continuous learning and development to principals as key change agents. Two, there is a need for these organizations to re-evaluate and re-organise existing courses for better recognition of transformative mediation as a leadership strategy to conflict resolution in schools. The provincial departments of education need to provide appropriate training for prospective principals as part of professional development programmes to address the essential needs pertaining to policy implementation that could create conflict in schools. Training in mediation of conflict would therefore be essential.

This study focused on the socio-transformative qualities of pedagogy and the development of a critical consciousness in multicultural music education. Specifically, it examined the extent to which the principles of critical pedagogy resided within the teaching practices of immigrant world music instructors as well as the extent to which their musical praxis promoted the development of a critical conscience for students participating in world music ensemble classes. A university world music program in Ontario provided the setting, and the methodological approach for this study employed a grounded theory approach, underpinned by the theoretical framework of critical pedagogy. Observed through these lenses, world music ensemble classes presented a critical pedagogy in action. Liberated from traditional teaching practices, non-resident Canadian citizen music instructors were reborn as critical educators, allowing their students to develop into critical thinkers. Data coding from documents, journals, video recordings, structured interviews, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and observation constructed a grounded theory matrix. From this matrix, it became possible to develop a mid-ranged theory and theoretical framework for a critical multicultural music education. This theory elicited recommendations for implementing multicultural music education in Ontario schools and provided topics for further discussion ofthe value of critical pedagogy in music education.

Abstract:
The National Writing Project (NWP) conducts four and five-week professional development summer workshops that K-16 expert teachers consistently praise as transformative. The central question posed in this dissertation focuses on whether the NWP workshop, based on a teachers-teaching-teachers design, could also serve as an effective professional development vehicle for transforming and preparing graduate student instructors (GSIs) to teach first-year composition. This question arises out of the need for knowledge-building graduate student preparation programs that keep pace with the increased demands of the first-year composition course and of the first-year composition students. Methods used to explore the feasibility of the NWP to prepare GSIs involve an analytic autoethnography and two survey research instruments. In the autoethnography, the researcher views the various processes experienced throughout the NWP workshop through the twin lenses of Transformation Learning (TL) theory and constructivist learning pedagogy. In the survey research, the researcher investigates the GSI participants' and local site directors' perceptions concerning the value and benefits of the NWP workshop to prepare GSIs for teaching writing. The researcher's analytic autoethnography reveals the transformative effects of the NWP experience on the teacher-frames of the researcher and of those peers attending the same NWP institute, while the surveys of the GSI participants and the local site directors reveal similarly positive effects of NWP pedagogy for preparing GSI for teaching writing. Based on these findings, combined with foundational support from the NWP meta-analysis of student writing outcomes of NWP participating teachers generated by the Local Sites Research Initiatives (LSRI), along with the independent Inverness Associates' studies focusing on the perceptions of teachers involved in the NWP's New-Teacher Initiative (NTI), the researcher recommends a pilot project involving a NWP designed pre-semester workshop for graduate student instructors prior to teaching first-year composition.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Manufacturing of customized products relies on a large menu choice, reduced batch sizes and frequent alternation of tasks performed by workers. In this context, manual tasks are especially affected by workers’ adaptation to new product models. This learning process takes place in different paces within a group of workers. This thesis aims at grouping workers with similar learning process tailored to avoid bottlenecks in production lines due to learning dissimilarities among workers. For that matter, we present a method for clustering workers based on parameters derived from Learning Curve (LC) modeling. Such parameters are processed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and the PCA scores are used as clustering variables. Next, Kernel transformations are also used to improve clustering quality. The data is clustered using K-Means and Fuzzy C-Means techniques, and the quality of resulting clusters is measured by the Silhouette Index. Finally, we suggest a variable importance index based on parameters derived from PCA to select the most relevant variables for clustering. The proposed approaches are applied in a footwear process, yielding satisfactory results when compared to clustering on original data or without variable selection.

Abstract:
In recent years, as the availability of remote sensing imagery of varying resolution has increased, merging images of differing spatial resolution has become a significant operation in the field of digital remote sensing. This practice, known as data fusion, is designed to enhance the spatial resolution of multispectral images by merging a relatively coarse-resolution image with a higher resolution panchromatic image of the same geographic area. This study examines properties of fused images and their ability to preserve the spectral integrity of the original image. It analyzes five current data fusion techniques for three complex scenes to assess their performance. The five data fusion models used include one spatial domain model (High-Pass Filter), two algebraic models (Multiplicative and Brovey Transform), and two spectral domain models (Principal Components Transform and Intensity-Hue-Saturation). SPOT data were chosen for both the panchromatic and multispectral data sets. These data sets were chosen for the high spatial resolution of the panchromatic (10 meters) data, the relatively high spectral resolution of the multispectral data, and the low spatial resolution ratio of two to one (2:1). After the application of the data fusion techniques, each merged image was analyzed statistically, graphically, and for increased photointerpretive potential as compared with the original multispectral images. While all of the data fusion models distorted the original multispectral imagery to an extent, both the Intensity-Hue-Saturation Model and the High-Pass Filter model maintained the original qualities of the multispectral imagery to an acceptable level. The High-Pass Filter model, designed to highlight the high frequency spatial information, provided the most noticeable increase in spatial resolution.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: There are many new developments in education taking place specifically in the field of schooling. Some of these developments - school based management, OBE curriculum developments and the devolution of control to the school level have brought with it many significant policy changes. Many educational leaders are struggling to keep abreast with these transformational changes that are confronting them with regard to leadership and management of education, and educational structures within the school. Therefore, visionary leadership is an essential ingredient in understanding the democratic changes and restructuring taking place at present. Many principals at schools are struggling with the changes, while possibly not fully understanding the political, social and economic dynamics of these changes. This assignment seeks to establish the need for visionary leadership in order to meet the challenges and constraints educational leaders face in their attempts to effect transformation in South Africa. I strongly identify with the democratic principles used to overcome the challenges and constraints to redress education in South African schools. Interviews were conducted and data was constructed with principals of six different schools in the East London area. The educational leaders interviewed, ranged from primary to high school principals giving a vast expanse of expertise as leaders within a specific school community. This assignment is based on the assumption that there is scope for educational leaders to bring about greater change and transformation in schools. There are many ways to visualise an effective school landscape based on a combination of personal, organisational and professional strategies. This assignment can be considered a contribution in this regard. KEY WORDS: Educational leaders, transformation and visionary leadership

Abstract:
Recently, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) have adopted policies that engage the private sector in the implementation of their development mandates. Despite the implications of these changes, the subject is among the least conceptualized. By applying a theory-guided process-tracing (TGPT) methodology, this paper examines the process of change at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It advances a constructivist argument and evaluates whether this change could be viewed as a norm-driven change, where norms of corporate social responsibility (CSR), in the process of interaction and learning, have obtained an intersubjective quality and redefined the role of the private sector in the context of organization’s objectives. The paper evaluates this argument in light of the alternative assumptions of the principal-agent model, the bureaucratic culture literature, and rational choice institutionalism. It highlights the implications of this research in empirical, analytical, and theoretical terms for further studies and concludes that, without a due assessment of the intervening effect of norms on policies, the causal claims of other theories are seriously challenged.

Abstract:
Hyperspectral remote sensing image data, such as that recorded by AVIRIS with 224 spectral bands, provides rich information on ground cover types. However, it presents new problems in machine assisted interpretation, mainly in long processing times and the difficulties of class training due to the low ratio of number of training samples to the number of bands. This thesis investigates feasible and efficient feature reduction and image classification techniques which are appropriate for hyperspectral image data. The study is reported in three parts. The first concerns a deterministic approach for hyperspectral data interpretation. Multigroup and multiple threshold spectral coding procedures, and associated techniques for spectral matching and classification, are proposed and tested. By coding on subgroups of bands using one or three thresholds, spectral searching and matching becomes simple, fast and free of the need for radiometric correction. Modifications of existing statistical techniques are proposed in the second part of the investigation A block-based maximum likelihood classification technique is developed. Several subgroups are formed from the complete set of spectral bands in the data, based on the properties of global correlation among the bands. Subgroups which are poorly correlated with each other are treated independently using conventional maximum likelihood classification. Experimental results demonstrate that, when using appropriate subgroup sizes, the new method provides a compromise among classification accuracy, processing time and available training pixels. Furthermore, a segmented, and possibly multi-layer, principal components transformation is proposed as a possible feature reduction technique prior to classification, and for effective colour display. The transformation is performed efficiently on each of the highly correlated subgroups of bands independently. Selected features from each transformed subgroup can be then transformed again to achieve a satisfactory data reduction ratio and to generate the three most significant components for colour display. Classification accuracy is improved and high quality colour image display is achieved in experiments using two AVIRIS data sets.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Face recognition algorithms has in the past few years become a very active area of research in the fields of computer vision, image processing, and cognitive psychology. This has spawned various algorithms of different complexities. The concept of principal component analysis(PCA) is a popular mode of face recognition algorithm and has often been used to benchmark other face recognition algorithms for identification and verification scenarios. However in this thesis, we try to analyze different face recognition algorithms at a deeper level. The objective is to model the distances output by any face recognition algorithm as a function of the input images. We achieve this by creating an affine eigen space from the PCA space such that it can approximate the results of the face recognition algorithm under consideration as closely as possible. Holistic template matching algorithms like the Linear Discriminant Analysis algorithm( LDA), the Bayesian Intrapersonal/Extrapersonal classifier(BIC), as well as local feature based algorithms like the Elastic Bunch Graph Matching algorithm(EBGM) and a commercial face recognition algorithm are selected for our experiments. We experiment on two different data sets, the FERET data set and the Notre Dame data set. The FERET data set consists of images of subjects with variation in both time and expression. The Notre Dame data set consists of images of subjects with variation in time. We train our affine approximation algorithm on 25 subjects and test with 300 subjects from the FERET data set and 415 subjects from the Notre Dame data set. We also analyze the effect of different distance metrics used by the face recognition algorithm on the accuracy of the approximation. We study the quality of the approximation in the context of recognition for the identification and verification scenarios, characterized by cumulative match score curves (CMC) and receiver operator curves (ROC), respectively. Our studies indicate that both the holistic template matching algorithms as well as feature based algorithms can be well approximated. We also find the affine approximation training can be generalized across covariates. For the data with time variation, we find that the rank order of approximation performance is BIC, LDA, EBGM, and commercial. For the data with expression variation, the rank order is LDA, BIC, commercial, and EBGM. Experiments to approximate PCA with distance measures other than Euclidean also performed very well. PCA+Euclidean distance is best approximated followed by PCA+MahL1, PCA+MahCosine, and PCA+Covariance.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This ethnomethodological study focuses on the worldviews of Lutheran school principals and pastors. Essentially, these leaders in a Lutheran school provide direction and vision for the school learning community. The degree to which their worldviews coalesce will naturally result in positive or negative influences on the whole school community. These leaders within the Lutheran school can be seen as a hub for all kinds of learning experiences and interaction in the context of vital Christian communities in mission outreach and quality education. Any dissonance of worldview has potential for impact on school processes and relationships. The Lutheran Church has defined the role of the pastor in the school and the difference from his role in a congregation (Lutheran Church of Australia, 2002). Lutheran principals have a delegated authority from their school councils to be responsible for the complete oversight of the school’s direction, the observance of policies, and the assignment of tasks and duties of staff. The blurring of responsibility occurs over the pastor’s rightful responsibility in regards to a word and sacrament ministry. In a Lutheran school where the Gospel is to inform all learning, such tension can cloud school dynamics and transformation. The Lutheran church policy, Relative responsibilities of pastor and principal within the Lutheran school, identifies three critical areas of required mutual respect for the Principal and School Pastor: theological, professional and personal (Lutheran Church of Australia, 2001, p. 3). Thus, the ‘worldview’ dimensions considered in this research centre around the theological, the educational and the interpersonal domains. The school transformation themes of lifelong learning, postmodernism and curriculum, school organization and change, and school community relationships are used to challenge worldview dimensions of Principals and School Pastors through a series of online ‘stories’, or scenarios, backed by personal interviews and a document study. The identification of school leadership tension points brings about recommendations for action.
