Abstract:
Love lies at the heart of the religious life, as a principle mode of relationship between the human and the transcendent, as a guiding motivation for the moral life, and, for many, as a defining attribute of the transcendent. Among all the emotions, love is the most transformative. Yet the transformative power of love can be highly disruptive, contravening the careful conceptual apparatus of religion, undermining institutional religious authority, and upsetting social expectations and hierarchies. And if the power of the emotion of love is not harnessed for self-transformation, then rather than enhancing the other-regarding perspective prescribed by religion, this emotion can increase attachment, partiality, and self-centeredness. In theistic traditions such as Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Baha'i, bhakti Hinduism, and Sikhism, love is considered an essential defining attribute of God and a definitive mode—if not the single definitive mode—of relationship between humans and the divine. This article discusses the nature of love and emotion, love as an attribute of the transcendent, and love as the response to the transcendent.

Bizeul, Yves, and Dennis Bastian Rudolf, eds. Gibt es eine kulturelle Identität? Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5771/9783845297934.

Full text
Abstract:
In reaction to François Jullien’s essay ‘There is no cultural identity’, this volume discusses questions and problems of cultural identity from the perspectives of different disciplines in times of newly emerging lines of conflict between open and closed societies, hyperculture and cultural essentialism as well as cosmopolitanism and communitarianism in late modernity. On the one hand, the book emphasises theoretical interpretations of the concept from the perspectives of political science, sociology and philosophy (of law), which liberate it from its static and essentialist substance in order to include praxeological, dynamic, transformative and collective as well as individual aspects. On the other hand, it brings empirical constructions and debates into focus—from identity narratives, representations and performances, via their use as a political slogan in discourses, to the question of the compatibility of cultural identities with democracy in principle.

Abstract:
With Albert O. Hirschman, project management scholarship has what it lacks the most: an eminent intellectual and social scientist who has thought long and hard about project management, and especially the management of large transformative projects. Cass Sunstein, co-author of Nudge and a key contributor to behavioral economics, distinguishes Hirschman as an early behavioral economist and says that his main contribution to project management, the book Development Projects Observed, “can plausibly be counted as a work in behavioral economics.” This chapter tests Sunstein’s claim by assessing Hirschman’s work in major project management, and asks what we can learn from Hirschman, as scholars, policy makers, and project leaders. The focus is on Hirschman’s principle of the Hiding Hand, first described in Development Projects Observed, because this is rightly considered his largest idea on project management and is one of his main contributions to economics and social science.
