Abstract:
The University of Arizona Health Network (UAHN) was a modestly successful health care delivery organization with a vibrant academic portfolio and stable finances. By 2013, however, market forces, health care financing changes, and the burden of technology and informatics upgrades led to a compromised financial position at UAHN, a situation experienced by many academic medical centers. Concurrently, Banner Health had been interested in forming an academic partnership to enhance innovation, including the incorporation of new approaches into health care delivery, and to recruit high-quality providers to the organization. In 2015, the University of Arizona (UA) and Banner Health entered into a unique partnership known as Banner -University Medicine. The objective was to create a statewide system that provides reliable, compassionate, high-quality health care across all of its providers and facilities and to make a 30-year commitment to UA's College of Medicine in Tucson and the College of Medicine in Phoenix to support the State of Arizona's position as a first-tier research and training destination with world-class physicians. The goal of the Banner -University Medicine partnership is to create a nationally leading organization that transforms health care by delivering better care, enhanced service, and lower costs through new approaches focused on wellness. Key elements of this partnership are highlighted in this Commentary, including the unique governance structure of the Academic Management Council, the creation of the Academic Enhancement Fund to support the UA Colleges of Medicine in Tucson and Phoenix, and novel approaches to medical education, research, innovation, and care.

Roszak, Christopher. "Taking a Transformative Leadership Approach to Stakeholder Trust." ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/331.

Full text
Abstract:
Business leaders struggle with the application of appropriate leadership models to retain stakeholder trust. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of mortgage and investment leaders and stakeholders on applying various leadership models to restore stakeholder trust. Stakeholder and stewardship theories formed the conceptual framework of this study. A purposive sample of 20 stakeholders from the investments and mortgage industry in central Colorado participated in semistructured interviews. The research questions were on a leader's application of various leadership traits to restore stakeholder trust. Six themes emerged following coding and reduction using a modified van Kaam approach: (a) benevolence, (b) transparency, (c) humility, (d) approachability, (e) authenticity, and (f) personality. The themes were consistent with transformative leadership traits and satisfied stakeholder affective needs for trust. These findings may be applicable to mortgage and investment business leaders who adopt a transformative leadership approach; such leaders may find an ethically sustainable leadership style that facilitates follower commitment and organizational change, reduces turnover, improves performance, and strengthens social relationships. Stakeholders may find that business leaders who adopt a transformative leadership approach may eventually commit to long-term wealth creation, maintain near-congruent values, and avoid self-serving behaviors.

Abstract:
‘Climate change is not gender neutral’ is a statement that has gained more recognition within the climate change debate over the last decade. This has resulted in a new field of research called gender and climate change. The mainstream gender and climate change debate has earlier almost exclusively focused on women’s vulnerability. A brief reading of the literature clearly shows that men are rarely observed in this context. The objective of this thesis is to broaden the understanding of the relation between gender and climate change by bringing men into the discussion. I have selected four cases/countries where existing research on men’s gendered experiences of climate change are mentioned. These take place in Greenland, Australia, Peru and South Africa. The result show five common findings between the cases: gendered responsibilities, changing traditional gender roles, psychological impacts, alcohol consumption and violence against women. The concept hegemonic masculinities is utilized as a framework used to understand why men are negatively affected by climate change. Masculine norms of attitudes and behavior identified in the multiple case studies are invulnerability and unwillingness to seek help. The analysis show that in times of climate variability can masculine norms be damaging for both men and women. A second analytical framework, the gender transformative approach brings the analysis to critically reflect upon masculinities and climate change as functions of power. From this perspective this thesis concludes that the gender and climate change discourse needs to move beyond a focus on women’s vulnerabilities, which divide the world into two classes: women as victims and men as perpetrators. This approach rather urge for a focus on the structures of power and domination within laws, behaviors and institutions that generates injustices.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to investigate what strategic guidance can be given to design transformative ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) programs in order to bring about the necessary shift away from our dominating mechanistic and transmissive educational model towards one that is transformative. ESD programs are of high importance when moving towards a more sustainable society, however, a lack of a strategic, full systems approach for planning in the field of complexity can be observed. This gap can be bridged by the use of the FSSD, the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, which is used as a conceptual framework throughout this paper. The field of transformative education was researched by using a mixed-methods approach, revealing what key elements and best practices are present that enable transformation to happen. The Cocoon model presented in this paper is derived from the results and intends to give strategic guidance for program designers on how to create a transformative ESD program. It is a process model that aids program designers to create the space for transformational learning to occur by strategically putting into place the elements that are conducive to transformation.

Juliano, Kristy Lynn. "Facilitating transformative music experiences| A wholehearted approach for choral leaders." Thesis, California State University, Los Angeles, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1568685.

Full text
Abstract:

In today's technology-driven age, choral arts programs are losing ground in the race for consumers' time and money. If these arts are to regain their rightful status in a balanced society, choral leaders must seek to elevate their music-making above the ordinary and expected to a heightened level of expression in which choral leader, choir, and audience connect and become one with the music, engendering a transcendence, however momentary, of present reality. Such a level cannot be attained by adapting to current trends and embracing technological enhancements, but rather by instilling respect for music for its own sake. This study contends that only by cultivating within themselves the qualities that lead to wholeheartedness—mindfulness, vulnerability, courage, authenticity, and humility—will choral leaders be able to facilitate that interconnectivity required to evoke such transformative experiences, and only then will choral arts programs become healthy and robust, impervious to fluctuating tastes and trends.

Reushle, Shirley. "Inquiry into a transformative approach to professional development for online educators." University of Southern Queensland, Faculty of Education, 2005. http://eprints.usq.edu.au/archive/00001494/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates professional development for online educators within a transformative learning framework. A qualitative, action research method was adopted that captured data from interactions between the researcher and participants, and which allowed the generation of theory that could guide future design efforts. The project was conducted online from Australia during 2002 and 2003 with two groups of participants drawn from a Singapore polytechnic. Data were analysed utilising content analysis of transcripts, interviews, and observations, with the researcher being an active participant in the project. The findings which differentiated online from traditional educational contexts, and which therefore are significant in terms of future design considerations were that since interactions were all text-based and visible, participants were careful to provide reasoned, reflective contributions. Furthermore, the archived interactions were available for inspection by all participants, giving rise to more articulate and constructive dialogues while maintaining evidence of the human "presence". Other findings related to supporting an online community of adult learners by recognising the individuality of each learner and their specific needs in terms of their experience, need for relevance and flexibility in the learning activity, and valuing the sense of human connectivity. Offering of peer support through a peer learning partnership model was found to be an effective way for learners to support each other in a trusting, respectful, empathetic, non-threatening manner. Findings indicated that the provision of exemplars, or models of good practice, supported situated, authentic activity, and contributed to positive, motivated learners. The dynamic (constantly changing, growing, adapting) nature of the Internet required facilitators to be continually evaluating the learning situation in order to promote and nurture an atmosphere that supported the development of new ideas, the challenging of old, the exploration of alternatives, and support for changes in perspective and action. Evidence suggested that the use of the Internet for learning and teaching could go some way towards addressing the challenges of prejudice, discrimination, and celebrate the notion of difference. From these findings, the literature, and the personal experience of the researcher, ten design principles were formulated and, if considered in light of local contextual characteristics, offer a framework for transformative approaches to professional development for online educators. Further research to address the application of this framework to other discipline areas, and other educational settings, is recommended.

The post-modem society is described as a society on the move, a phenomenon the anthropologist, (Vigouroux, 2005) describes as 'flows'. These flows are mostly manifested by people moving in and towards countries with better economic prospects. In most African countries there is a large-scale migration from rural to urban areas and a lot of trans-national migration across countries, due to recent socio-economic and socio-political trends. Democracy in South Africa became a powerful drawing card on the African continent for those nations plagued by poverty, unemployment and civil wars and migration to South Africa became increasingly popular. Therefore, democracy in South Africa is also a spatial process, which transcends local and national geographical spaces.

Abstract:
Mass culture in Thailand creates idealizations about female beauty which cause many women to engage in destructive behavior such as starvation dieting and forced vomiting. In this dissertation I describe efforts to develop awareness among a group of predominately female students at a rural Thai university about the ideological purposes of these idealizations. Using a CD-based multimedia research template, the students reported the “common sense” beliefs which help create the beauty ideal and the effects of these beliefs on their own lives and the lives of other women. The major finding of their research was that mass culture creates beauty ideologies to maintain social stratification, in that those women who are made to feel “ugly” because they do not resemble the white-skinned underweight ideal tend not to be members of the elite social class which has the resources and time to achieve these ideals. The significance of this dissertation lies in the emancipatory effects that it produced; although a Critical Discourse Analysis showed that the students continued to assimilate some of the values and interests which they had identified as “oppressive”, they also demonstrated to varying degrees that they had ceased to think and behave in ways which had caused them mental and physical damage in the past.

au, J. Horncastle@murdoch edu, and Julia Horncastle. "Queer Being and the Sexual Interstice: A Phenomenological Approach to the Queer Transformative Self." Murdoch University, 2008. http://wwwlib.murdoch.edu.au/adt/browse/view/adt-MU20081105.142124.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores a notion of “queer being” in relation to a difficult yet creative articulation of queer self-consciousness. The difficulty of attempting to “particularise” self-consciousness is challenged and dismantled by proposing ways in which putatively exclusive esoteric knowledges of being can be exposed and expanded. This is achieved by justifying singular (queer) experience as it coincides with the disparities between subjectivity and objectivity, experience and existence. I argue that two key perspectives (those of interstitiality and self-transformativity) provide a basis whereby we can “force” a radical articulation of queer being-ness into general and contemporary philosophical discourses of being. In doing so, a particularised theory of intersubjective being emerges as a way to identify the complicity of ethics and ontology. “Queerness” in this thesis is especially articulated as an eccentricity or poetics of being, experienced at the juncture of diverse knowledge spaces. These include not only the threshold and radical spaces of sexuality and gender, but also the perceived limits of theories of being which allow us to formulate understandings of self-consciousness. This is evidenced through a critical analysis of feminist, queer, transgender, phenomenological and existential texts and/or practices, paying special regard to “everyday, real-life” experience. By using a combination of the “logic of the interstice”, genealogical methods, hermeneutical analysis and a deconstructionist theoretical approach, the thesis seeks out, and insists upon, ways to articulate and determine the possibility of a queer sensibility as both a practice of self-transformativity and a more broadly applicable knowledge heuristic. The thesis demonstrates that by increasing an awareness of a particular kind of self-transformative queer being-ness – one that embraces a critical ethics of being – the rich insights of queer experiences and knowledges can act as a valuable resource for reviewing the horizons of the ontology of the subject. It also suggests that particularising the term “queer” in relation to a complex theory of “sensibility” provides new depths for understanding, and practical ways to make use of, a queer theory of being.

Nyatsanza, Tarsisio Majinya. "Developing a transformative approach to HIV/AIDS education : an analysis of Scotland and Zimbabwe." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/6438/.

Full text
Abstract:
Global statistics indicate that currently 35 million people are living with HIV of which 4, 634 are living in Scotland (out of a total population of 5 295 00) and the figure for Zimbabwe is estimated at 1, 400 000 (out of a total population of 14 149648). In this thesis, I have suggested a framework that goes beyond a limited analysis of the complexity of understanding the HIV/AIDS origins, its evolution and prevalence beyond the epidemiological mapping. The approach allows for the development of a more rational, inclusive, broader and sustainable HIV/AIDS Education (Wood 2014, Wood and Rolleri 2014). This approach is not only emancipatory but also empowers (Freire 2000, Freire 2004) both those affected and infected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. I have chosen both Scotland and Zimbabwe as each of them has dealt with the epidemic in different ways. Scotland has had significant success in combating HIV/AIDS through various initiatives. Zimbabwe on the other hand, is an example of a developing country in sub-Saharan Africa with one of the highest levels of HIV/AIDS infected and affected people in the world (UNAIDS Country Report 2014). I used ‘selected’ documentary analysis that is, looking at selected documents that contain the major policy responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. I also conducted interviews with key informants using semi-structured interview questions and then analysed the resultant data using a range of heuristic tools. The main findings of this research included how a number of conspiracy theories were constructed in order to explain the origins and the evolution of HIV/AIDS. Examples of these conspiracy theories included the homosexual link to HIV/AIDS,witchcraft and biological warfare among others. Other issues discussed focused on conspiracy as the construction of otherness, moralising the epidemic, assessing the impact of culture, religion and politics on the epidemic as well as the implications of these issues on Sex Education. The thesis concluded with suggesting a framework for developing a transformative approach to HIV/AIDS and Sex Education.

Sweeney, John P. "Beyond a deficit-based approach : public sector audit as a transformative mechanism for positive change." Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 2018. http://repository.londonmet.ac.uk/4030/.

Full text
Abstract:
Public service operates in an accountability environment, characterised by complex relationships among auditors, auditees, and stakeholders. Public sector audit provides important information to stakeholders, but it is not always so effective in transforming and improving management. This research explores audit's potential to become an instrument for positive change, by addressing a knowledge-gap about intrapersonal, interpersonal, and interorganisational characteristics that would inhibit or facilitate such a paradigm shift. It found that audit has the capacity and potential to move beyond a purely deficit-based role, to positively promote improvements and collaborative learning between institutions and stakeholders. The studies obtained data from semi-structured interviews, survey questionnaires, and documents from 13 Supreme Audit Institutions in the period 2015-2017. The first study presents a unique competency model for performance auditors, identifying citizenship, creativity, and the love of learning, as distinctive competencies, congruent with a positive audit approach. The second study explores the auditor's view of the auditor-auditee relationship using role theory and identifies distinct psychological assets used by auditors: independence, competence, positive personal attributes, collaboration, fairness, and positive change; the latter two forming scale constructs to measure adaptive relational attitudes. The third study evaluates the effectiveness of cognitive-based training in influencing auditors' attitudes to audit relationships. The final study identifies three critical factors influencing interorganisational learning in an accountability context: organisations' absorptive and teaching capacity; dynamic interorganisational processes, and the commitment, knowledge, and ability of staff. This thesis provides new insights into applying psychological theories on relationships in a public sector audit setting. It addresses practical issues affecting the recruitment and selection of staff and the design of better audit processes. It concludes that public sector audit already possesses the theoretical and practical attributes to become a proactive, collaborative, participatory activity. Thus, by expanding its role, it can be a dynamic, transformative instrument for positive change.

CUValles has no intentional, integrated institutional pathway to comprehensive internationalization. Consequently, the primary purpose of this transformative inquiry is to analyze how comprehensive internationalization might be achieved at CUValles: a constituent of a decentralized, multi-campus University Network. Interviews with 12 key informants and official document analysis were the means of data collection. Findings indicate the disarticulated presence of all comprehensive internationalization as characterized by ACE, (2017). Comprehensive internationalization might be achieved at CUValles through a context savvy application of de Wit’s Internationalization Cycle (2002), integrated from an “Inter-Campus Research Institute for International Higher Education”

Thesis, Paris Est, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PESC0016.

Full text
Abstract:
Rooted in the Transformative Consumer Research (Mick et al., 2012), this research explores the manifestation of food well-being using consumers' memories of lived experiences. In a naturalistic (Lincoln and Guba, 1985) and interpretativist approach, this qualitative research combines three types of data which grant us access to lived experiences: the phenomenological interview, photo-elicitation and the personal diary. By following a grounded analysis process theory (Glaser and Strauss, 1967), our results present two major elements defining the experience of food well-being: the role of the expression of personal values (Schwartz, 1992) in the experience of food well-being and the presence of three key components in the overall process of the experiment. The results then allow us to define the experience of food well-being as a eudemonic experience linked to the motivational values of the person. This is supported by different enabling conditions (attention to quality of time, products and recipes as well as the physical context of the experience); experiential processes (full mastery of the experience, immersion, initiation, sharing, reminiscence and reproduction of memory, and sensory process); and positive emotions (pride, joy, enthusiasm, gratitude, relaxation, comfort and nostalgia). Our results propose a taxonomy of food well-being according to 4 principles: the food well-being of conservation, the food well-being of self-transcendence, the food well-being of openness to change and the food well-being of self-enhancement. These concepts define food eudemonia characterized by the confluence of food related experiences and meanings attributed to well-being with the individual's own values. Finally, this research proposes managerial recommendations for public authorities, consumer protection associations and non-governmental organizations, as well as all the actors in food chains and distributors invested and / or concerned by consumer well-being issues

Abstract:
The field of mediation tend to shift as practitioners and theorists make new recommendations concerning how the mediation practice should be conducted. The United Nations play a crucial role in this, its work involves providing training and guidance for new mediators through various arms of their system. This thesis is analyzing the 2010 publication A Manual for UN Mediators: Advice from UN Representatives and Envoys to identify which skills and strategies they are recommending, through Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six step approach to thematic analysis, connecting to the social constructionist paradigm. According to social constructionism, all mediation practices are based on ideological or value premises. Therefore, the identified recommendations are analyzed and discussed at the level of underlying ideologies. In particular, through the lenses of a problem-solving and transformative approach to mediation. Resultingly, a total of 12 themes relating to recommended mediation strategies and skills are identified, with both approaches to mediation being identified in the themes relating to the strategies and discussed within this regard.

Abstract:
The field of autism in epidemiology has received much attention in recent times especially as scientific information evolves on the causes and impact of autism spectrum disorder. Just as medical research is conducting to arrest the growing pace of autism with current research indicating one out of every 68 children in the United States diagnosed autistic, the field of the social science has equally produced some literature on the subject. Much of the social science and epidemiological information in the field has bothered on framing the concept (Murray, 2008), historical dimension and causation of the disease, and its associative influence on family (Grinker, 2007). However, not much has been done to assess the phenomenon from the point of view of conflict analysis and resolution (Sabatelli & Waldron, 1995) to fully understand their sense of conflict ambiguity and ambiguous loss of a child with autism (Cridland et al. 2014; O'Brien, 2007). This research therefore attempted to bridge that gap through reflexive analysis of transcripts from phenomenological interviewing of 19 participants comprised of 14 single parents and 5 married couples with autistic children. While the primary focus of the research was Single parents, married couples served comparative analytical purpose of data validation. Theories of phenomenology, Resilience, human needs, stereotypes & identity, relative deprivation, attribution, critical theory, ambiguous loss, etc. operationalize to frame the research language for hermeneutical transformative interpretation and social action about the phenomenon. Results from the study indicate conflict behavioral experience, a burden curve and resilient risk factors associated with caring for an autistic child leading to possible crisis borderline.

Scozzaro, David. "Youth, Social Networking, and Resistance: A Case Study on a Multidimensional Approach to Resistance." Digital Commons at Loyola Marymount University and Loyola Law School, 2011. https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/etd/246.

Full text
Abstract:
This exploratory case study focused on youth and resistance that was aided by the use of technology. The combination of resistance and technology expanded a multidimensional framework and leads to new insight into transformative resistance. This study examined the framework of transformative resistance based on Solórzano and Delgado Bernal’s (2001) findings. Specific interest centered on learning how and why youth used MySpace to organize student walkouts in protest of House Resolution 4437 in late March 2006, ultimately amassing 40,000 students in Los Angeles. Another purpose was to create a framework for ways in which educators can meaningfully embrace the combination of pedagogy, technology, and revolution. The case study method, which involved collecting data by document review, MySpace Group pages, and interviews, produced a comprehensive picture of the H.R. 4437 Walkouts. Thematic coding and social network analysis were used to examine the collected data. The study findings showed that a combination of multimodal (face-to-face, text messaging, and MySpace) and multidirectional (one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one, many-to-many) communications contributed to the success of the H.R. 4437 Walkouts. The sub-themes of speed and strategic use of private and public communication channels also played roles. The combination of these four elements created a decentralized, nonhierarchical network that provided significant strengths, but also indicated some weaknesses in the communication process. An educational framework is proposed that combines pedagogy, technology and revolution. Multidimensional revolutionary pedagogy has been created as a guide for teachers to facilitate student efforts to engage in transformative resistance related to social justice causes.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to develop an understanding of how peace education for children can work as part of a broader conflict transformation process in intractable and post-conflict societies. The study sets out to establish if and how theoretically researched knowledge combines with the actual practical work of peace educators and to note the contribution of peace education in the transformative approach. To assist in achieving my aims, I am applying a comparative evaluation method that allows for a comparison to be made between theory and practice. I have devised two case illustrations concerning specific organisations which can be evaluated with regard to their work with peace education. I have also conducted a thorough literature analysis which has enabled the study to incorporate appropriately selected theoretical approaches to be examined against the work of the practitioners. The research concludes with a discussion centred on my findings and the normative standpoint that I take: that peace education certainly plays a significant role in the overall conflict transformative process and that theoretical knowledge can and should be the basis of its practical work. Keywords: Peace education, conflict transformation, children, post-conflict, theory and practice

Abstract:
The demographic imperative drives a fundamental tenet of multicultural education: We must more thoroughly acknowledge US diversity by incorporating authentic ethnic heritage in social studies. The purpose of this study was to investigate recommendations, from three levels of educators, on content form and medium for preservice social studies teachers in using resources for an ethnic minority relevant to the state of Illinois and US history, the Illinois Indians. I also explored how varied participant perspectives informed those recommendations and gave meaning to multicultural education via such content. Research questions involved perceptions, attributes, and needs of preservice social studies teachers. Data sources encompassed: (1) interviews and focus groups from curriculum specialists, experienced teachers, and preservice teachers; (2) demographic data and critiques of eight mediums, to position participants relative to multicultural concepts and medium usage in social studies. The mediums were: professors, textbooks, children’s literature, news outlets, museums, popular and documentary film, and digital resources. Findings included participant recommendations for: pedagogical content knowledge form; (mediums) digital resources and museum discovery kits, children’s literature (elementary grades). Constant comparison analysis yielded educational perspectives reflecting multicultural education challenges as addressed by emergent participant themes and identified educator dispositions. These findings have implications for: (1) utilizing authentic ethnic minority content in social studies methods classes; (2) designing prepackaged pedagogical content knowledge; (3) examining multicultural education approach vs. historical thinking approach; (4) informing the rift between academic historians and social studies adherents. (5) Findings also led to development of the Tree of Growth Model reflecting educator dispositions.

Gluckman, Lloyd. "Water sensitive urban design as a transformative approach to urban water management in Cape Town: A case study of the proposed River Club development." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/27528.

Full text
Abstract:
The author examines effective urban water management as a means to promote sustainable development and achieve water sensitive cities. A qualitative method is utilised in the collection of data through document studies, desktop analysis and a literature review. A review of the current national and local water policies and approaches within South Africa, and more specifically Cape Town, indicated the need for a coordinated, systems based and holistic approach to urban water management. Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) is considered as an alternative approach to urban water management in Cape Town to build resilience among local communities against the threat of drought and flood events, and promote sustainable development in moving toward a water sensitive city. A model for implementing WSUD in the context of limited resources and capacity within local municipal departments is considered. Incorporating the principles of WSUD within spatial planning initiatives to implement this approach and catalyse a systemic transition in urban water management is considered and assessed in a case study of the proposed development of the River Club. The case study considers a bottom-up approach to transforming urban water management and the capacity of WSUD, when implemented through spatial planning, to simultaneously address multiple objectives including those of sustainable development and those contained within national and local policies. The benefits of a WSUD approach for all are considered. Many if these benefits are as a result of reduced pressures on municipal infrastructure and increased water resources accrued as a product of the proposed implementation model. The implementation model proposed creates conditions in which municipal resources and investment can be redirected to promote equitable water resource and service provision distribution throughout the city. The model is proposed to effect a transformation in water policy, institutional structures and water resource management to reflect the principles of WSUD in a manner which is cognisant of the various limitations inherent to the City.

Abstract:
There is a large and widespread consensus suggesting that internships, as one form of experiential learning, can be an effective instrument for the development of students’ technical and transferable skills and therefore as enhancing graduate employability. Separately, studies have found that international experiences can develop the skills most valued by employers. This research addresses a gap at the intersection of these two fields of study. Most studies analyze international experiences with a distinctive focus on the international and not on the different types of experiences, e.g. study abroad versus internships. The question this study aims to answer is whether an internship and an international context combine to extend the learning experience beyond that developed through a domestic internship alone. When the design of this study was initially planned, much effort was put into identifying a tool to measure employability in the most objective way possible. Digital game-based assessments were identified as the most appropriate tool to do this objectively. Insights into behaviors in this study result in over 30 quantitative descriptors of employability, which converge with the lists of transferable skills that have been identified as those demanded by the labor market and extensively analyzed in the employability literature. The data for this study was collected over three years 2017-19, and a total of 1315 Italian students were involved. Exploratory factor analysis examined the structure underlying the employability descriptors generated by the digital game-based assessments. The findings reveal several significant themes that further contribute to our current knowledge and understanding of what influences graduates’ employability. The first finding answers the research question. When an internship takes place in a country different from that of the student’s home, there is additional experiential learning from the international context, which contributes further to the experiential and transformative learning already developed through the internship. It also appears that this additional element is associated with employability behaviors predicted by Cognitive and not Social factors. This contrasts with earlier studies on the impact of international experiences, which generally find that social and interpersonal skills are developed. This study also finds that when there appears to be a gender bias toward male students in employability behaviors predicted by cognitive abilities, this bias disappears when associated with international internships.

Abstract:
‘Every human conduct that is not totally impulsive or just routine mechanics seems to be guided by an evaluation process’ (Dewey, 1939). Switching away from this individual definition of evaluation, the thesis acknowledges the definition given by OECD-DAC and focus the experimentation of well-known multicriteria decision aiding methodologies for ex-ante assessment in a specific development cooperation case study. Chapters 1 and 2, resume the structured bibliographic that has been conducted in order to identify an updated sample of literature about evaluation in development cooperation. During the evolution of the sector, several approaches and methodologies have been conceived and are continuously developing in order to match the variety of evaluanda and contexts. So, three main approaches can be defined, still keeping in mind that they are interlaced in their mutual evolution: the “Positivist-Experimental”, the “Pragmatist-Quality” and the “Constructive-Social Process” approaches group the contributions of several authors, ranging from the more theoretical philosophical basis to the development of specific methodologies and practical techniques. The reality of human development today, as defined by UN through SDGs, requests a multifaceted approach that is capable of mixing the existing approaches, methodologies and techniques. Pluralism of values and focus on the real use of evaluation results through participatory knowledge management are the key elements of the “Constructivist-Social Process approach” which is gaining attention in development cooperation evaluation systems. The literature review took in consideration the state of art of governmental and non-governmental organizations for worldwide and brought to the conclusion that ESs are nowadays in the middle of a renovation process which is far from being concluded. For this reason, we worked in order to provide new insights about sound methodologies able to integrate the different paradigms and methodologies in order to keep methodological robustness and allow a transformative evaluation process to take place in a specific case study. Chapter 3 frames our case study that is located in the Diocese of Goma, Nord Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo. The framework for this case study is provided by a 3-year EU-funded project called ARDST ‘Appui au retour de réfugiés et déplacés par le biais de la sécurisation de terres en Diocèse de Goma’, led by Caritas Development Goma NGO. The project started in February 2016 and ended in June 2019. In this context our research group was asked to lead a strategic sectoral evaluation. The aim of the evaluation was to inform the choice of interventions meant to trigger sustainable agricultural development in the Diocese of Goma. Chapters 4 to 6 report the pre-print version of three scientific papers issued from the research. Chapter 4 deals with the sketching of a spatial decision support system aimed at Multi-Criteria Evaluation of potential pilot sites for agricultural development and refugees’ resettlement. Land disputes are considered both key sources and perpetuating factors of conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Existing literature demonstrates that remote sensing is a useful tool for systematically monitor the spatial-temporal land use/land cover dynamics in many regions of the world. For this reason, in this Chapter we propose a methodology for the integration of different sources of information, namely satellite imagery and census information, in order to set up multi-method approach for evidence-based decision-making in development cooperation. Chapter 5 deals with the use of a simplified multicriteria decision-making methodology and namely the application of a simplified form of pairwise ranking (SPWR). International Aid initiatives involve complex real-world decision-making problems in all their relevant phases. Agri-environmental and generally landscape-scale issues are the typical target of participative decision-making procedures as they involve community resources planning. To successfully solve the complex real-world problems multi-criteria group decision-making approaches are recognized as reliable and effective. Main research questions are : What are the priorities for intervention in order to achieve sustainable development of the agricultural sector in the case study? Is SPWR a sound technique to prioritize different alternatives for intervention while improving group consensus in real-world complex cases? SPWR was found to be a useful technique for eliciting discussion among a multidisciplinary group for pointing out and discuss inconsistencies in decision makers’ preferences. Moreover, the final group ranking matches the existing guidelines for sustainable agricultural development in the region demonstrating that SPWR is a sound technique for prioritization of alternatives in the fields of agricultural development and international aid. Chapter 6 deals with the use of a modified form of analytic hierarchy process, namely the participatory analytic hierarchy process (PAHP), as a tool for choice criteria elicitation and resource allocation in the framework of our case study. In the field of international aid the participatory approaches to assessment, research, management and budgeting have been widely studied and applied in the last decades, mostly because international aid initiatives, in all their relevant phases from planning through implementation, monitoring and evaluation, are faced with the problem of identifying initiatives that could be successfully and sustainably implemented. During our research, we were able to make use of most frequent inconsistencies in pairwise comparison matrixes in order to stimulate the debate, to adjust local preferences and to build consensus across the group. From an operational point of view, the PAHP methodology was also suited for training the project team and for identifying a shared resource allocation pattern, which matches the existing international guidelines for agricultural development in the region. Finally, in Chapter 7, we use the results of our research to support the proposal of the wider use of the experimented evaluation approaches and methodologies as tools for fostering the diffusion of evaluation culture in development cooperation, which in turns is a key objective to foster the impact of interventions aiming sustainability. In fact, in development cooperation, the dissemination at all levels of a culture of evaluation and the construction of solid, adaptive and inclusive feedback and decision-making systems are seen as possible solutions to the everlasting doubt about development cooperation impact. In our research, we experimented a methodological approach and some specific multicriteria participatory techniques that should be taken into account when trying to link in a completely interconnected chain, the cooperation results on different scales and to evaluate, both ex-ante and ex-post, its overall contribution towards the SDGs.

Abstract:

Professional learning environments and professional development practices among educators throughout the United States have experienced a great deal of attention in the need for changes toward collaborative learning models and professional learning opportunities that engage in hands-on work focused on student learning and the growth of teachers’ practice to help students develop their ability to think critically. This qualitative phenomenological study explored middle and high school teachers’ and administrators’ previous professional learning experiences through the practice of School-Based Instructional Rounds and Student Shadowing. The research focused on exploring the impact, if any, on transforming teaching strategies that provide deeper learning experiences for students in college and career readiness. A transformative framework under the theory of Mezirow’s transformative learning theory and Knowles’s adult learning theory using a constructivist paradigm and grounded theory approach informed the exploration of worldviews from the data of this research study.

The participants who took part in School-Based Instructional Rounds included 8 high school and middle teachers and administrators in 3 school districts representing 4 Southern California schools. In-person interviews support the research findings in this study. The participants represented in the Shadow a Student Challenge consisted of school leaders and a teacher who work in public and private middle and high school districts in the states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Rhode Island. Document analysis and personal interviews support the research findings of this study. Professional learning experiences of School-Based Instructional Rounds and Student Shadowing were explored within the lived experiences of teachers and administrators professional learning practices. Perceptions of deeper learning opportunities in middle and high school classrooms were examined, connecting professional development and the transformation of deeper learning instructional practices. This study will contribute to the body of literature on the value of implementing School-Based Instructional Rounds and the Shadow a Student Challenge as hands-on professional learning practices for teachers and administrators toward supporting the adoption of engaging, meaningful, and relevant strategies for 21st-century learning skills in middle and high school classrooms.

Abstract:
At a time when global consumption and production levels are 25 percent higher than the Earth’s sustainable carrying capacity, there are worldwide calls to find ways to sustain the Earth for this and future generations. A central premise of this study is that education systems have an obligation to participate in this move towards sustainability and can respond by embedding education for sustainability into curricula. This study took early childhood education as its focus due to the teacherresearcher’s own concerns about the state of the planet, coupled with early childhood education’s established traditions of nature-based and child-centred pedagogy. The study explored the experiences of a class of kindergarten children as they undertook a Project Approach to learning about environmental sustainability. The Project Approach is an adaptation of Chard’s work which is situated within a constructivist theoretical framework (Chard, 2011). The Project Approach involves in-depth investigations around an identified topic of interest. It has three phases: introductory, synthesising and culminating phase. The study also investigated the learning journey of the classroom teacher/researcher who broadened her long-held co-constructivist teaching approaches to include transformative practices in order to facilitate curriculum which embedded education for sustainability. While coconstructivist approaches focus on the co-construction of knowledge, transformative practices are concerned with creating change. An action research case study was conducted. This involved twenty-two children who attended an Australian kindergarten. Data were collected and analysed over a seven week period. The study found that young children can be change agents for sustainability when a Project Approach is broadened to include transformative practices. The study also found that the child participants were able to think critically about environmental and sustainability issues, were able to create change in their local contexts, and took on the role of educators to influence others’ environmental behaviours. Another finding was that the teacher-researcher’s participation in the study caused a transformation of both her teaching philosophy and the culture at the kindergarten. An important outcome of the study was the development of a new curriculum model that integrates and has applicability for curriculum development and teacher practice.

This study explored and described the varying ways a group of 6-8-year-old children understood sustainability-related topics and issues. The findings of this study revealed children’s understandings were experienced across six increasingly complex and inclusive action-orientated categories: Providing; Regulating; Educating; Helping; Innovating; and Connecting. This study drew on the theory and methodology of phenomenography. The implications from this research are relevant to teaching practice and may shift the ways teachers, and educators think about the competence and capability of young children to be involved in addressing complex and multifaceted issues that are relevant to their lived world.

Full text
Abstract:
Organisations are subject to change in their environments. In response to these changes, they have the option of transformation - a process of realignment in order to adapt to their circumstances. There are various approaches in management theory and in the consulting industry whereby organisations can realign themselves. These approaches vary from behavioural approaches, management approaches, information technology approaches and financial approaches. Generally they tend to focus on only some of the components of business transformation and neglect those that are outside the boundaries of the particular subject area ofthe approach. Industrial Engineering is a cross-functional discipline that focuses on the improvement of business systems. The author believes that Industrial Engineering provides the right theoretical home for these approaches, and has the ability to integrate the various methods because of its cross-functional perspective. Also, the foundations of many of the current approaches are without substance. It is in these areas where the author believes Industrial Engineering can provide a vast contribution. This thesis uses a generic engineering approach in order to define an integrated and comprehensive framework for business transformation. In doing so, the Industrial Engineering discipline is expanded. This framework is known as Business Engineering. The approach that is presented is based on a phased process consisting of the following elements: • A business analysis phase. • A business design phase. • A business transformation phase. • A business operation phase. These phases are executed through the application of the fundamental engineering skills of innovation, systems thinking and the application of the sciences.
Hierdie raamwerk staan bekend as Besigheidsingenieurswese.

An empirical study has been made on the provider of the mission of this study, Propia, and a case study has been made on the case company Tekniska verken, in order to verify the theoretical findings and results. The study was performed by two master students of Industrial Engineering and Management at Linköping university during the period from January to May 2019. The study was performed as a master thesis within the master's orientation Strategy and Management Control, and aims to explore how organizations can develop a dynamic digital capability, which is seen as the key to success when it comes to managing digital transformation in a successful way. The study was performed iteratively, by first examining the area of digital transformation, defined as the transformation of business and strategy through digital technology and organizational changes. Three areas where organizational changes are needed were identified, namely the areas of Leadership & Vision, Culture & People and Corporate Processes & Structures. Further, three factors within each area were defined as critical in order to succeed with digital transformation. These nine critical factors laid the foundation for the second part of the study, where the area of dynamic capabilities was studied and applied onto the findings on how to manage dynamic transformation in a successful way. Dynamic capabilities can shortly be described as routines for change and can be further disaggregated into three capacities: Sense – the ability to know what opportunities exist and can be matched with the internal prerequisites; Seize – the ability to capture the right opportunities and successfully integrate them into the business; Reconfigure – the ability to, when needed, perform changes of structures and resources. Within these three capacities, microfoundations to build the previously mentioned critical factors in a dynamic way were identified. The result of the study was a generalizable framework, consisting of these nine critical factors and 31 microfoundations required to build the factors in a dynamic way. By developing the dynamic capability microfoundations and, thereby, continuously work with all factors, the development of a dynamic digital capability in the organization will be facilitated. The framework can thereby be used as a checklist of what is already in place in the organization, and what is lacking and must thereby be obtained. Worth noticing is that factors and microfoundations as well as dynamic digital capability in itself is perishable, hence “checking the box” of a factor or microfoundation once does not mean it is obtained forever, but it requires continuous work and development of all parts of the framework. Dependencies and interrelationships between the factors have been identified, as well as the effect of other organizational aspects such as size, industry and how far the organization has proceeded in their digital transformation journey. These dependencies are discussed in the report, but no relative importance or order of how and when the factors and microfoundations should be obtained and developed has been further explored or confirmed. This is due to the desired generalizability of the framework.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M. in Engineering and Management)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, February 2013.

Enterprises, companies and organizations around the world strive to achieve competitive advantage by designing and implementing more advanced business and organizational architectures, streamlined and robust processes and structures, and effective and scalable management systems and practices. Industry, academia and management consulting companies have developed a variety of organizational models, change frameworks and transformation roadmaps to facilitate and to support business improvement activities and initiatives. The overall change management landscape, however, remains rather vague, overlapping and fragmented at the same time. To reduce this ambiguity and to be able to make a better-educated choice of models and frameworks to use, a close examination, classification, mapping and analysis of leading models and frameworks is conducted here. Common themes and distinct features are identified. An alternative high level organizational model is proposed. The coupled nature and duality of organizational models and change frameworks are identified and explored. Macro and meso levels of change management are considered and bridged via the classification of change management actions and interventions and the decomposition of change management planning and transformation design phases. To complement high level change management frameworks with applied tools, a change management projects scoring approach called "BLUE-over-RED" is proposed. In addition, an attempt to formulate a formal problem of organization transition trajectory optimization using the apparatus of operations research and graph theory is made.

Shayesteh, H. "Typo-morphological approach to housing transformation in Tehran." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2013. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1398302/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study sets out to investigate the transformation of house types in relation to changes of urban built forms. From the title it is clear that this study includes two major arguments. One concerns housing transformation where the focal point is change. The other is typo-morphology, which concerns the approach of the study to that change and the issues of type, typology and morphology. The study looks at long term processes of change in housing types in Tehran in chronological order to see how new house types are introduced or designed and built and how traditional types have been transformed to become modern: why, how and by what means they evolve and adapt to new needs and different circumstances. It addresses the transformation of house types, as one dominant type of dwelling replaces another. Of course there are cultural factors at work here, and the influences of architectural fashion. But there are also questions of increases in density, rising land prices, the impact of growing car ownership, planning policy and legislation. Ultimately this study tries to answer a core question: Was there something necessary about the evolutionary process of housing in Tehran or given the present block sizes in Tehran, could there be anything different from the current norms for built forms? Using morphological analysis, more specifically plan analysis, the relationship between type of house and built form of the fabric is explored and examined. The analysis is carried out at residential level and at the scale of buildings, plots and blocks. The emphasis is on the built forms and external envelopes of houses, more than the details of internal planning. The particular focus of this study is the relationship of plot size and shape with house type and the various ways of aggregating plots to create different urban built forms. The analysis is focused therefore on questions of plot size and shape; pedestrian and vehicular access; natural lighting; and the provision of open space around dwellings. The relationship between type of house and built form is explored and examined using morphological analysis and by reference to the ‘archetypal building’ proposed by Steadman (2001). The sample areas are selected from three boroughs of Tehran corresponding to important periods in its morphological transformation. The analysis tries to bridge between three main themes shaping three chapters: planning, geography and architecture (typo-morphology). Three phases of analysis are conducted at different scales. The first phase is the impact of planning and legislation. The second phase is the analysis of plot size and built form, first at the macro-scale of the three selected representative boroughs and then in smaller areas within those boroughs for a more micro-scale analysis. The third phase is the abstract analysis, which is the enumeration of geometrical/configurational possibilities by sketching out the theoretical possibilities that plots could have. There then follows a comparison of these with the actual plans observed in different areas. The study seeks to provide data and develop an understanding of the influences of plot shape and dimension in different parts of the city. It helps to understand the patterns of distribution of different plots and house types in different periods of the city’s expansion. Finally, comparing and synthesizing the results of analyses indicates other actual examples and scenarios that could have happened, thereby showing how houses in Tehran could have changed differently in other directions, and the fact that that is still a possibility.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the construction of a family of quantum transformation groupoids in the algebraic framework in the form of the measured multiplier Hopf *-algebroids in the sense of Timmermann and Van Daele and also in the context of operator algebras in the form of Hopf C*-bimodules on a C*-base in the sense of Timmermann. In the purely algebraic context, we first give a definition of a braided commutative Yetter-Drinfeld *-algebra over an algebraic quantum group in the sense of Van Daele and a Yetter-Drinfeld integral on it. Then, using these objects we construct a measured multiplier Hopf *-algebroid, we call to this new object an algebraic quantum transformation groupoid. In order to pass to the operator algebra framework, we give some conditions on the Yetter-Drinfeld integral inspired by the properties of KMS-weights on C*-algebras which will allow us to use the Gelfand–Naimark–Segal construction to extend all the purely algebraic objects to the C*-algebraic level. At this level, we construct in a similar way to that used in the work of Enock and Timmermann, a new mathematical object that we call a C*-algebraic quantum transformation groupoid, which is defined using the language of Hopf C*-bimodules on C*-bases

Marchand, Jean-Baptiste. "Traversée vers l’autre identité sexuée : transformation hormonale et chirurgicale et fonctionnement psychique." Thesis, Paris 10, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA100126/document.

Abstract:
Objective and problematic: the transsexualism as well as its treatment by the hormonal and surgical sex reassignment are phenomena in the crossroads of all the limits: body, subjectivity, society, psyche … In front of this complexity, running with the approaches structural and deconstructivist, this thesis has for objective to define and to propose a new "transversal" approach of the transsexualism, and in the continuity of this one of the sexed identity, with the elements of the psychoanalytical theory that are the sexual death drive, the third topical of the splited Unconscious, the impulsive realization by the perception and the clinical of the extreme and the ordinary.Material(Equipment) and method: on sample of six subjects transsexuals male to female resorting at present or having resorted to the sex reassignment for more than two years, we analyzed the results in a clinical interview inspired by the structural approach, in the projective tests of the rorschach and the TAT according to the projectivist method of Paris Descartes, as well as in the MMPI-2. Our three hypotheses are that the transsexual identity problematic would send back to the sexual death drive, to the amential Unconscious and to the clinical of the extreme, then that the sex reassignment would have the potential to act such as an impulsive realization by the perception. Results: the results validate both first ones hypothesis on the sex drive, the amential Unconscious and the clinical of the extreme, but not that one on the impulsive realization by the perception. Conclusion and discussion: these results show the interest of a transversal approach to dread a phenomenon borderline as are it the transsexualism and the sexed identity which see each other lit by the transversal theoretical proposed elements (sexual death drive, amential Unconscious and private hospital of the extreme). Concerning, the effects of psychic sex reassignment at the level, it seems necessary to pursue our investigation, the impulsive realization by the perception has been validated to one of our subject but excluded to the other one

Coutts, Leah Marie. "Engaging Adult Piano Students Through Transformative Pedagogical Approaches." Thesis, Griffith University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/366165.

Full text
Abstract:
As the number of adults seeking to learn the piano increases, so too does the need for piano teachers to understand how to better facilitate their learning. This research offers detailed pedagogical insights into understanding and meeting the learning needs of six adult piano students through the author’s practitioner-based study. It investigates the use of transformative pedagogical strategies aimed at engaging adult students in all areas of their learning. The main themes explored are relevance and repertoire selection, lesson interactions and home practice. Using self-direction and experiential learning as the theoretical framework for this study, the author uncovers skill sets and mindsets associated with engagement in the contexts of adult piano students’ one-to-one piano lessons and home practice. The experiential learning cycle encompasses the metacognitive and cognitive skills associated with deliberate piano practice and self-direction. These include planning and implementing appropriate practice strategies, observing and reflecting on outcomes and adapting approaches to tasks accordingly. Developing and utilising these skills, however, is dependent on mindset factors that students bring to their learning. These include expectations, self-efficacy levels, epistemological beliefs, goal orientations and attributions. This nine-month study explores how these mindsets impacted students’ learning and how altering the author’s teaching strategies contributed to fostering mindsets conducive to student engagement.

Abstract:
Over the last year the Faculty of Biological Sciences at East Tennessee State University have been evaluating core coursework for biology majors and working towards transforming teaching approaches to enhance the undergraduate learning experience and improve overall learning outcomes among our graduates. Our institution serves a large population of low-income and first generation college students living and working in Southern Appalachian region. The most important motivation behind transformation is to provide highly-qualified graduates who can contribute to the economic development and growth of the area. In focusing on traineeship and skills development of graduates, we adopted an action plan focused on students, faculty, and curriculum development. Under the leadership of the chair, productive and positive discourse on curricular goals among faculty has shaped well-defined core concepts and competencies we envision for our graduates. Several faculty are using research-based methods to improve the core curriculum and to infuse best teaching practices in the classroom. The strengths of our program lie in having demonstrated success in providing students with authentic research experiences in upper-level courses. We are working towards infusing these ideas and skills-development into the introductory core curriculum in hopes of increasing the number of undergraduates who pursue professional graduate degrees. Our hopes are that investing in transformative changes in the classrooms and providing high-quality educational opportunities will increase the time our students devote to STEM career development and ultimately result in large-scale economic development on the Southern Appalachian community.

Baskaran, Geetha. "A domain transformation approach for addressing staff scheduling problems." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/31249/.

Full text
Abstract:
Staff scheduling is a complex combinatorial optimisation problem concerning allocation of staff to duty rosters in a wide range of industries and settings. This thesis presents a novel approach to solving staff scheduling problems, and in particular nurse scheduling, by simplifying the problem space through information granulation. The complexity of the problem is due to a large solution space and the many constraints that need to be satisfied. Published research indicates that methods based on random searches of the solution space did not produce good-quality results consistently. In this study, we have avoided random searching and proposed a systematic hierarchical method of granulation of the problem domain through pre-processing of constraints. The approach is general and can be applied to a wide range of staff scheduling problems. The novel approach proposed here involves a simplification of the original problem by a judicious grouping of shift types and a grouping of individual shifts into weekly sequences. The schedule construction is done systematically, while assuring its feasibility and minimising the cost of the solution in the reduced problem space of weekly sequences. Subsequently, the schedules from the reduced problem space are translated into the original problem space by taking into account the constraints that could not be represented in the reduced space. This two-stage approach to solving the scheduling problem is referred to here as a domain-transformation approach. The thesis reports computational results on both standard benchmark problems and a specific scheduling problem from Kajang Hospital in Malaysia. The results confirm that the proposed method delivers high-quality results consistently and is computationally efficient.
