Full textLeadership is a major challenge for the police organization. This research aims to understand the effects of transformational leadership on individuals and teams within the context of the French police through the mediating role of work engagement. The results of our multilevel and longitudinal study conducted among 1,520 policemen in 144 teams, over a period of 8 months, indicate that transformational leadership has direct and indirect effects on different outcomes at the individual and the team level. More specifically, through the lens of job demands and resources theory (Demerouti et al., 2001), we show that transformational leadership acts as a resource that encourages the subordinates to become more engaged in their work that in turn improved performance. Our results thus help to illuminate the "black box" of transformational leadership (Jung and Avolio, 2000) explaining "how" and "why" through work engagement, transformational leadership enhances performance at work. Also, based on the theory of social exchange (Blau, 1964), we show the emergence of similar relationships at the collective level through the existence of work environments such as transformational leadership climate or work engagement climate which have effects on outcomes at different levels. The theoretical contributions of this research, the managerial implications for police organization as well as avenues for future research are discussed

Full textThe research aimed to study the relationship among and emotional intelligence, leadershipstyles, and leadership effectiveness in order to develop and examine a model exploring themediating effect of transformational leadership on the relationship between emotionalintelligence and leadership effectiveness. A sample of 79 male managers who won IranianNational INPE Award were chosen by systematic random sampling method. The results ofthe structural equation modeling showed that the transformational style was significantlymediating the relationship between emotional intelligence and leadership effectiveness.Emotional intelligence and leadership effectiveness had correlations with transformationalstyle positively, with Laissez-faire negatively and no relation with transactional leadership. The contingent reward of transactional style correlated positively with emotional intelligenceand its components. The managers rated high in the INPE reward, had also obtained highscores on the leadership effectiveness. Results of canonical correlation revealed that two ofthe canonical correlations were more important than the others and explained the 72% and20% of the variance in the canonical variables respectively. The results of a stepwiseregression showed the understanding and perceiving emotional intelligence explained theleadership effectiveness significantly (R2= 0.58)

Full textEncouraging pro-environmental behaviours is deeply needed due to the significant impact of human activity on climate change. Part of the population is already engaged in virtuous behaviours, but many obstacles are still preventing climate action. It is even more significant in a tourism context since pro-environmental behaviours tend to fade during holidays. Researchers are still struggling to identify an effective approach that could lead to long-term responsible behaviours. However, the literature dedicated to transformative tourism highlights the power of the tourism experience to encourage individual transformations. To broaden existing research, this doctoral work suggests that practices experienced during a tourism activity could be transferred to everyday life and foster pro-environmental behaviours. Our empirical material is based on a longitudinal and multi-method data collection from nineteen respondents who walked several days on the Camino de Compostela. Our results first enrich the understanding of the holistic process of transformation in the context of a pedestrian itinerancy through the construction of a conceptual model exploring the dynamics of this process, the triggering factors as well as the types and duration of transformations. Our results also identify that confrontation with frugal practices during pedestrian itinerancy triggers the adoption of long-term pro-environmental practices thanks to a mechanism of transferability that encourages the transposition of frugal practices from holidays to everyday life. These results not only contribute to the literature on transformative tourism and the adoption of pro-environmental behaviours, but also make relevant methodological contributions. Our research also has a significant managerial and social impact since we invite tourism stakeholders to design frugal activities that could convince tourists to adopt more sustainable behaviours in their daily lives. This would contribute to the collective effort towards sobriety.Key words : long-term sustainable behaviour, transformative tourism, frugal practices, transferability, longitudinal study

Full textBoth managers and the employees they lead are subject to multiple demands, which reflect the economic requirements to which companies are subject. (Huet, Husson & Anor, 2014). In the higher education sector that interests us, and in particular that of business schools, economic criteria such as profitability, return on investment and market share at regional, national and international level are playing an increasingly important role, as they have in other sectors of the economy, but more recently. Academic excellence (and therefore the academic reputation of the institution) is no longer the main differentiating criterion for survival and sustainability. In an increasingly competitive environment, profitability, return on investment and international appeal are becoming essential. Initiative and adaptation to a constantly changing market are becoming imperative for survival. At the same time, business schools are the subject of a wide range of national and international rankings, in which their position is largely the same,Our hypothesis is therefore that leadership is subject to contradictory injunctions vis-à-vis its employees. He or she must encourage initiative, inventiveness and differentiation, and must therefore encourage leadership that fosters intellectual stimulation (Bass, 1985; Avolio and Bass, 1995). However, obtaining accreditation, which imposes a high degree of normativity, could lead some managers to adopt a rather directive, even authoritarian, leadership style, generating passivity and even resistance. In this context, our problem is as follows: how can leadership in French Business Schools reconcile, on the one hand, the normativity and standardisation imposed by national and international accreditations and, on the other hand, the initiative and capacity for proposal of staff, aimed at transformation and innovation, which are essential for competitive differentiation. Our concept of leadership is based on that of Mc Gregor (1978), for whom leadership occurs when decision-makers "mobilise institutional, political, psychological and other resources" in order to motivate and satisfy followers within a general framework of pursuing common interests, satisfying and optimising the general interest and particular interests. In a literature review, we therefore examined all the theories on leadership, of which there are many (personalist, behaviourist, contingency, emotional intelligence, spiritual leadership, transactional theories, etc.). At the end of this work, we decided to focus on transformational leadership.Transformational leadership takes employees to higher levels of motivation linked to the general interest (Bass, 1985; Bass and Avolio, 1990) and promotes intrinsic motivation (linked to the personal satisfaction that can be found in carrying out an activity). We have developed hypotheses based on the theory's sub-components (idealised influence, inspirational motivation, individualised consideration, intellectual stimulation) to which we have added two components that are not linked to the theory but are related: autonomy and the voice of employees. Our 6 hypotheses, the confirmation or denial of which will enable us to respond to our problem, were written according to the same structure: a literature review of the concept mentioned, the potential link between the concept and innovation, and the statement of the hypothesis

Full textThis research focuses on the personal and professional characteristics leading to leadership development of school principals. It is consistent with the view that the principal's leadership is the cornerstone of any successful school (Barth, 1991). The principal is responsible for developing staff within the organization and their abilities (Senge 1990) while ensuring that their individual and collective contributions are put to work in the service of the educational mission. This approach is based on interaction, communication and shared listening. In this case, "The leader must know his team in terms of experience and potential as much as he must be known by his team" (St-Germain,2002, p.146). On the one hand, during his or her professional development, the school principal seeks advice and support from expert colleagues in order to carry out this mission. This form of support, known as mentoring, plays an important role "in the development of entrepreneurial self-efficacy"(St Jean & Mathieu, 2011, p.13). It is postulated that this form of support is also present in education. On the other hand, recent studies indicate that personal characteristics such as emotional competencies may be one of the most important elements of leadership (Goleman, Boyatzis & Mckee,2004). According to Anderson (2004), emotional competencies are considered "the most powerful force for improving school effectiveness and achieving excellence in education" (p.84). Few studies in education have examined the links between these three concepts: mentoring, emotional competencies and leadership. To our knowledge, no studies in the field of school management have examined the relationship between mentoring, emotional competencies and leadership style. In order to verify this relationship, a research review based on a systematic review of the literature on the links between mentoring, emotional competencies and leadership among school principals was first conducted. Second, the process of developing a questionnaire on the development of emotional competencies during mentoring was validated. Third, a path analysis was applied to explore the link between the three concepts under study. The results show that mentoring is an essential training instrument for the development of emotional competencies and that transformational leadership is the recommended style for an effective school.

Full textThe introduction of Information Technology and Communication (ICT) in education requires the development of new skills to meet new needs. This requires rethinking the training of trainers. The training includes the aspect of learning, which aims to develop the meanings that require, for the adult learner, the experiences of his life. Experience with educational value is included in the process of self-study. The experience is changing. Strong experience and crystallized thought and explanation, is transformed through oral or written expression. Experience is an existential stage that develops the autonomy of the person operating the return on experience. From this perspective, this thesis combines a number of experiences related to the path of its author. The objective is to examine the role of experience in skills development and professional identity in a master’s degree course. Our hypothesis is that experience has a decisive role in the development of skills and acquisition of professional identity. At first we analyze the role of experience in training. Next, we study the skills developed having completed the training of two professional masters and we examine how to develop a professional identity in the process. We study how it is possible that a trainer in French as foreign language (FFL) is developing a certain range of skills across a number of life experiences, work and training. We end by proposing a model of a professional master’s degree program in FFL/TIC/ Training engineering using a case study of the writer’s as an example

"La pérennité des relations interorganisationnelles en fédérations de coopératives – le cas Casa Apis du Brésil : Le rôle des proximités et du leadership transformationnel dans la construction de la relation et l’intention des adhérents de le rester." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Lyon, 2021. http://www.theses.fr/2021LYSES008.
Full textThe objective of this thesis is to understand the factors that can explain and influence the durability of inter-organizational relations in cooperative federations. To reach this objective, we mobilized the concepts of proximity, trust, transformational leadership and organizational commitment (affective and continuation commitment), in the sense of the intention to remain in the relationship. Two studies were carried out: first, a qualitative study to identify the proximities mobilized for the construction of inter-organizational relations in the federation of cooperatives. Then, a quantitative study with 232 members of the federation to test the influence of proximities (price, access, identity, process and relation), trust and transformational leadership on organizational commitment. The data were analyzed using Nvivo 11 software (qualitative study) and SmartPLS 3.0 software (quantitative study). These studies were applied to the cooperative federation Casa Apis in Brazil. The development of these two studies allowed us to conclude that the construction of the relationship between Casa Apis and the member beekeepers is explained by proximities, which are created in a hierarchical way. It was also found that the intention of the beekeepers to remain in the relationship with Casa Apis is influenced by the proximities of price and process, by trust and by transformational leadership. Therefore, the sustainability of relationships in Casa Apis is influenced by proximities, trust, transformational leadership, and organizational commitment

This thesis is addressing the styles of leadership and was conducted a study that main purpose was to identify the leadership styles of managers perceived by nurses in hospitals and relate / examine possible variables, such as socio-demographic characteristics (gender, age), Occupation (professional, professional experience and expertise in the area of management) and state of training (academic degree and postgraduate course). Leadership, therefore, the concept has been more intensely studied. The study was conducted in 5 hospitals (Porto and Vale do Ave) The technique of gathering data that was used was the questionnaire, Bass and Avolio (1995) called Multifactorial Leadership Questionaire ® (MLQ) and a questionnaire of sociodemographic variables. The data were treated statistically, using descriptive statistics and inferential, this study is known as quantitative, descriptive and used as the statistical method with parametric tests. Among the results which met, it was found that the perception of hundred and twenty five (n = 125) nurses interim managers surveyed, was a mixture of transformational leadership style of transaction and the latter being less perceived. In some distance and with a negligible value, is the leadership style of laissez-faire. Finally it is suggested that this type of research is applied to nurses aimed to compare the results, and also to link with the satisfaction in the work of nurses and productivity of the service.

Full textThis thesis is an enquiry on the concept of plasticity, regarding its implication with relationships. Enriching Bergson's thought with that of neurosciences, it aims at opening up new prospects of a philosophy of intersubjective relationships. On the one hand, contemporary neurobiology revealed the powers of change in the brain (N. Doidge). This plasticity may affect the behaviour of an individual, as well as the relationships he builds with other people. How can we orientate this ambivalent ability towards harmony rather than disaster? Answering this question means describing the principles of plasticity, and distinguishing them from those of elasticity, which implies the notion of reversibility. Plasticity rather means irreversible metamorphosis, creating novelties. This idea is essential in Bergson’s philosophy: life itself is a plastic explosion. Multiple tendencies emerge from it. The dynamic pattern describes this reality in terms of change owing to an interaction. It shows the link between plasticity and relationships. On the other hand, the evolution of the discourse of neurosciences is influenced by the challenge of plasticity. The debate between the eliminativistic materialism (P. Churchland) and functionalism (J. Fodor), about the status of the ordinary psychology testifies for it. Connectionism (P. Smolensky), dynamic of the mind (T. van Gelder) and the social brain (M. Gazzaniga) underline the plastic and relational character of cognition, not relying on classical physics, but on the one of emerging phenomenons. This allows passing from the monadic brain to solidarity brain, from the issue of free will to the one of the link. In Bergson work, in Les deux sources de la morale et de la religion, we can find an illustration of this relational plasticity, in the acts of exemplary persons, who can be imitated by others.Four epistemological conversions allow us to develop this intuition. The first one modifies Kantian category of relation, adapting it to the system of intersubjective relationships. The second one is a relational metamorphosis of life and thought (F. Worms). The third one stresses the primitive status of the relational in comparison to the cultural (J. Bowlby and D. Winnicott). The fourth one is a relational inflection of communication (Palo Alto School), which reveals that change itself is plastic. There is a change of change, a meta-change. So, plasticity is paradoxical. It is creative, but it may also destroy shapes (C. Malabou). Except that, it is possible to act in oder to orientate it towards resilience (B. Cyrulnik) and hope (C. Peguy). The latter does not belong to pre-established harmony. It rather emerges from an intersubjective initiative of diffusion of good plasticity, which requires educational efforts. This could be a supply to managing the relational challenges of our time, especially ideological radicalization. Moreover, re-examining Bergson's thought referring to plasticity allows us to read his philosophy with a different understanding. Thus, in the Essai sur les données immédiates de la conscience, time would explode to turn into a more plastic reality: duration. Matière et mémoire would be the process of a contraction of memory, followed by a strong explosion, resulting in a multiplicity of levels of consciousness. L’évolution créatrice would describe the plasticity of life. It deals with explosion, in the shape of a brunch, the life force in several tendencies. This bursting would affect intelligence, producing something new: intuition. In Les deux sources de la morale et de la religion, it would rather be the explosion of the person and of society. Therefore, plasticity would be one of the basic intuitions of Bergson's thought

Full textThe markup language XML defines a simple syntax for structured data that can be used across application boundaries. One of the most important prerequisites for the interchange of such XML data is the possibility of its transformation. Among the currently available transformation approaches for XML, the W3C standard XSLT has gained the biggest popularity. However, XSLT doesn''t scale for huge amounts of data because it requires an overall view to an XML document. Other existing transformation approaches either have the same character or require low-level programming using a general programming language. This PhD thesis introduces STX, an XML transformation language that fills this gap. STX is strongly geared to XSLT, though it processes an XML document as a stream. Therefore, STX is able to transform documents of any size. The STX path language (STXPath), derived from the W3C standard XPath 2.0, considers the restricted view to the input data and enables the access only to the ancestors of the current context node. The new concepts in STX include besides its procedural behaviour mainly groups, interfaces to external transformation processes, complex transformations of strings, as well as language means for error handling. This work introduces design patterns for the most important transformation types in STX and demonstrates three real-life scenarios. The STX processor Joost used for this purpose provides in addition standardized Java interfaces that facilitate its integration into existing Java applications.

Full textThis dissertation, Transformational Innovation (TI) in the U.S. Department of Defense (U.S. DoD) Acquisitions, is a qualitative case study. The topic is viewed through a social constructivist lens and designed to understand the contemporary real-life experiences of U.S. DoD acquisition professionals in meeting the challenge of the Better Buying Power initiative. This initiative, Better Buying Power, asks U.S. DoD acquisition professionals to create innovative business processes designed to increase the effectiveness and best value of U.S. DoD acquisition activities. The researcher examined observed illustrations of TI and the accompanying instances of transformational or transactional leadership. Transformational leadership (TL) can be characterized by idealized influence/charisma, inspirational motivation, intellectual consideration and stimulation, and individualized consideration. In contrast, transactional leadership is a method whereby goals and tasks are assigned to employees who are motivated by rewards and punishments and must do as the manager says or face the consequences. The data gathered from this research effort are centered on two areas, transformational leadership in the U.S. DoD acquisitions workforce, and transformational innovation within the U.S. DoD acquisitions workforce. Several themes emerged from the study: there were few examples of transformational leadership; there were few examples of transformational innovation; there were many examples of transactional leadership, the U.S. DoD is still primarily transactional; and change in the U.S. DoD is directive. The results of the study add to the literature surrounding TL and TI and offer insight into the effects of transformational leadership on transformational innovation.

Full textOne of the greatest challenges our society faces is how to transform a fundamentally inequitable educational system. The societal inequities marginalized groups witness and experience on a daily basis are magnified by hegemonic educational policies and practices which produce, reproduce, and reinforce the concepts of white privilege. Developing transformative leaders is crucial given educational leadership is considered second only to teaching as an influence on students' learning.
This qualitative study examined the personal and professional growth of eight administrators and described the process by which these adults learn, internalized what they learn, and put their new knowledge into practice through socially just action within their schools and departments. The targeted professional development employed the tenets of critical race theory and principles of transformative leadership development as key elements toward addressing educational inequities.
The study provided insight into the lived experiences of educational leaders and explored their development of critical consciousness and how they utilized a lens of equity to effect personal and systemic change. The study grounded in critical race theory, transformational adult learning, and social justice leadership development revealed administrators who participated in ongoing, equity centered, professional development, shared similar experiences as adult learners and educational leaders in their professional roles. The results strongly suggested the impact this professional development had on their beliefs and behaviors was significant. These developing transformative leaders found the professional development to be relevant and urgent work resulting in the implementation of systemic change to varying degrees.

The research provides a case study of performance metrics within the framework of the product development process and team effectiveness. A comparative analysis of eight product development teams was done to evaluate the teams' effectiveness in achieving three outcomes - customer satisfaction, shareholder value and time to market. A survey was conducted to evaluate areas where no formal documentation existed and to supplement the existing historical data that were collected from databases and documents. The analysis was done on two levels - by program team and individual respondent - and looked at the level of performance and effort that influenced the specific outcomes. It was concluded that performance metrics are used within an organization to drive actions, to assess progress and to make decisions. Conclusions were consistent with the premise that people perform to how they are measured and that the team effectiveness can be driven by a set of performance metrics that are aligned with the strategic goal of the organization. Transformational metrics were developed within the framework of understanding the interdependence of the social and technical systems. Choosing the right metrics is critical to an organization's success because the metrics directly influence behavior and establish the culture within the firm. It was determined that if the right combinations of metrics are selected, teams will act in such a way as to maximize their effectiveness and behave in a manner that achieves the corporate goals.

Full textThis study´s purpose is to investigate whether HR staff experience stress relating to an HR transformation. The issues applied to the essay included; the result of the HR transformation, what kind of difficulties it could cause the HR staff, along with how the transformation affects their psychosocial working environment with focus on stress. The study was performed with the help of six informants, who is currently working in an HR department and have in some form participated in an HR-transformation. Data collection was based on semistructured interviews and analyzed with a thematic method. The result showed that half of the informants experienced stress relating to the HR transformation. The HR-transformation resulted in close operational support, visibility in the business, good collegial support and that the HR perspective was included in strategic decisions. Difficulties that arose were ambiguity in the process of change and that the process was time-consuming and working with the new requirements. Confusions about new working methods, unclear division of labor at implementation and an unspoken requirement for constant availability for the business were factors that contributed to perceived stress.

Outsourcing maintenance to third-party contractors has become an increasingly popular option for manufacturers to achieve tactical and/or strategic objectives. Though simple in concept, maintenance outsourcing is difficult in execution, especially in a cost-sensitive environment. This project examines the Full Service business under ABB Ltd to understand the key factors that drive the success of an outsourced maintenance operation. We present a qualitative causal loop diagram developed based on the case study of Kinleith Pulp and Paper Mill in New Zealand. The diagram describes the interconnections among various technical, economic, relationship, and humanistic factors and shows how cost-cutting initiatives can frequently undermine labor relationship and tip the plant into the vicious cycle of reactive, expensive work practices. The model also explains how Kinleith achieved a remarkable turnaround under ABB, yielding high performance and significant improvements in labor relations. A case study of Tasman Pulp and Paper Mill provides a contrasting case where success has been more difficult. Results point to the importance of creating sufficient resources ("slack") to implement improvement activities and pace implementation based on pre-existing dynamics on site.

McClimon, Michael. "A transformational approach to jazz harmony." Thesis, Indiana University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3746901.
Full textHarmony is one of the most fundamental elements of jazz, and one that is often taken for granted in the scholarly literature. Because jazz is an improvised music, its harmony is more fluid and potentially more complex than that of other, notated traditions. Harmony in common-practice jazz (c. 1940–1965) is typically represented by chord symbols, which can be actualized by performers in any number of ways, and which might change over the course of a single performance.
This dissertation presents a transformational model of jazz harmony that helps to explain this inherent complexity. While other theories of jazz harmony require transcriptions into notation, the transformational approach enables analysis of chord symbols themselves. This approach, in which chord symbols are treated as first-class objects, is consistent with the way jazz harmony is usually taught, and with the way jazz musicians usually discuss harmony. Though transformational theory has been applied to later jazz, the aim of this study is rather different: the music under consideration here might be called “tonal jazz,” in which functional harmonic progressions are still the rule.
After a general introduction, the first chapter introduces the transformational approach by developing a diatonic seventh-chord space. Chapter 2 expands this diatonic space to a fully chromatic space that focuses on the ii–V–I progression, laying the foundation for much of the work that follows. Chapter 3 extends the model to examine music in which root motion by thirds plays an important role, paying special attention to the way in which harmonic substitution interacts with more normative jazz harmony. Since the pioneering work of George Russell in the 1950s, many jazz musicians have drawn an equivalence between chords and scales; Chapter 4 develops a transformational approach to these chord-scales, enabling analyses of improvisations on tunes first analyzed in the preceding chapters. The final chapter centers on a single harmonic archetype, Rhythm changes, and brings together the theoretical framework in a series of analyses featuring solos by Johnny Griffin, Thelonious Monk, George Coleman, Sonny Rollins, and Sonny Stitt.
