Abstract:
L'identification de pratiques agricoles qui minimisent les risques de contamination des eaux de surface nécessite d'évaluer l'importance des voies de transfert des herbicides vers les cours d'eau. Le but de cette étude est d'évaluer à l'échelle du champ agricole et pour une saison de culture l'exportation effective de l'atrazine et du métolachlore par ruissellement de surface et par drainage, ceci pour des conditions pédo-climatiques et agronomiques représentatives de la culture intensive du maïs-grain dans les Basses-Terres du St-Laurent (Québec). Pour les deux premiers événements pluviaux d'importance suivant l'application des herbicides, seulement deux des six champs étudiés ont présenté un ruissellement quittant le champ : les concentrations en herbicides ont atteint 1200 mg/L et 2400 mg/L. La charge exportée en herbicides semble inférieure dans le cas du non travail du sol (semis direct), comparativement au labour conventionnel. Les concentrations en herbicides dans l'eau de drainage sont inférieures à 6 mg/L (pour la majorité inférieures à 1-2mg/L) pour quatre champs, alors que deux champs ont présenté des concentrations atteignant 40-60 mg/L. La charge exportée par drainage apparaît être faible dans le cas de l'application d'herbicides en bandes, comparativement à l'application en surface totale. La masse en herbicides exportée par ruissellement (estimée à partir de coefficients de ruissellement probables) serait supérieure à celle par drainage. Une démarche destinée à diminuer les masses en herbicides exportées devrait ainsi viser la principale voie de cette exportation, c'est-à-dire le ruissellement de surface.

Cet article montre que si la fiction québécoise réussit à franchir les frontières linguistiques et culturelles et à se créer un espace de réception dans les champs littéraires espagnol et catalan – et ce malgré les nombreux obstacles à la diffusion d’une littérature minoritaire – c’est grâce à l’action d’acteurs institutionnels associés au gouvernement fédéral canadien et au gouvernement provincial québécois. Un tel investissement est motivé par le fait que la traduction littéraire est considérée comme un outil au service de la diplomatie culturelle qui sert à construire une « image de marque » positive du Canada et du Québec à l’étranger, une image qui les rendrait compétitifs sur la scène internationale. Or, une fois hors de la portée des réseaux institutionnels, les textes sélectionnés pour être traduits entrent dans les réseaux des espaces cibles où ils se voient recontextualisés. Dans ce nouveau contexte, ils ne pourront pas échapper à leur resémantisation axio-idéologique par les agents issus des champs cibles, une resémantisation qui peut d’ailleurs être loin des représentations du Canada ou du Québec voulues par les acteurs institutionnels qui avaient encouragé le transfert littéraire. Ainsi, cet article dégage la portée, mais également les limites de l’action de ces acteurs institutionnels, ainsi que les rapports ambivalents qui s’établissent entre eux et les agents appartenant au champ littéraire, notamment les éditeurs québécois, mais aussi les éditeurs espagnols et catalans, qui ont le dernier mot en ce qui concerne la sélection des oeuvres à traduire.

Résumé La relation entre la recherche sociale et la transformation des pratiques sociales soulève, comme c'est souvent le cas dans plusieurs champs de pratique, la question du transfert des connaissances issues de la recherche. Dans cet article, nous décrivons trois modèles théoriques de transformation des pratiques sociales en lien avec la recherche : le modèle linéaire, le modèle coopératif ou associatif et le modèle d'autodéveloppement. À partir de ces modèles théoriques, nous analyserons huit expériences de recherche sociale reconnues comme ayant fait l'objet de transfert des connaissances dans le milieu de pratique et présentées lors du forum sur le transfert des connaissances organisé par le Conseil québécois de la recherche sociale (CQRS) en 1990. L'analyse de ces huit expériences permet de constater qu'elles se polarisent autour des modèles linéaire et coopératif. Cette analyse met en évidence les stratégies de transfert des connaissances utilisées, les impacts de ces stratégies, les limites et les difficultés reliées à ces deux modèles. Cela nous permettra de dégager certaines limites et de critiquer l'efficacité de ces trois modèles de transformation des pratiques sociales en lien avec la recherche.

Comment traduire les valeurs culturelles berbères en s’appuyant sur l’analyse du transfert de différents types de culturèmes dans l’œuvre de La Terre et le Sang de Mouloud Feraoun, écrit en français et traduit à l’arabe ? L'objectif fixé est de chercher comment résoudre le traitement de la traduction des éléments culturels de textes de littérature algérienne d’expression française en arabe. Pour atteindre cet objectif global, on a soulevé les objectifs spécifiques suivants : en premier lieu, présenter un état des approches traductologiques qui portent leur intérêt sur le transfert culturel et sur les différentes propositions théoriques concernant la relation entre la langue et la culture afin d'établir le cadre théorique de cette étude. En second, élaborer un modèle pour l'analyse des éléments culturels dans la traduction. En dernier lieu, décrire et examiner les champs culturels qui engendrent des problèmes d’ordre culturel les plus importants dans la traduction français-arabe.

Dans les deux domaines de l’activité créatrice de Iannis Xenakis que sont la musique et l’architecture, on peut constater parfois la présence de principes identiques. Se pose alors la question de la nature des liens entre les deux champs : s’agit-il d’une pure ubiquité poïétique ou bien plutôt du transfert d’un concept propre à l’un des domaines vers un autre auquel il est extrinsèque et donc facteur d’innovation ? L’étude des rapports entre les deux oeuvres contemporaines que sont Metastasis et le Couvent de la Tourette permet d’y dégager deux principes y apparaissant de manière ubiquitaire : l’utilisation de permutations et l’élaboration d’un système d’organisation proportionnelle des durées et des dimensions spatiales. En revanche, les glissandi de Metastasis et les paraboloïdes hyperboliques du Pavillon Philips qui témoignent de l’intérêt de Xenakis pour les phénomènes de continuité, répondent à un principe de transfert qui induit des écarts perceptuels non négligeables d’un domaine à l’autre. Ultérieurement, Xenakis en viendra à travailler conjointement dans les dimensions spatiale et temporelle avec la « cinématique sonore » qu’il développa à la fois dans sa production électroacoustique et instrumentale des années soixante et soixante-dix. Dans Persephassa et Windungen qui en constituent des exemples emblématiques, la vitesse de déplacement du son dans l’espace apparaît comme un nouveau paramètre compositionnel.

Le travail présente un modèle mathématique conceptuel de transfert et de diffusion de masse destiné à l'étude des migrations d'effluents en rivière. Ce modèle prend en compte l'existence d'écoulements cisaillés ainsi que la présence de gradients de diffusion turbulente. Il permet de calculer les champs de concentrations et les valeurs moyennes de concentration à travers toute section transversale de l'écoulement. La localisation et la taille relative du rejet sont respectées. L'influence des rives sur les processus de dispersion est prise en considération.Pour quantifier l'influence des berges, une relation est établie entre les concentrations calculées en écoulement de largeur infinie et les concentrations en écoulement d'extension limitée. La méthode utilisée est fondée sur l'emploi d'un champ de vitesse et d'un champ de coefficient de diffusion, symétriques par rapport à des lignes riveraines séparant le courant nul d'un courant fictif situé de part et d'autre de ces limites.Les résultats des tests du modèle mathématique, réalisés à l'aide du programme moniteur « Gradient 2 », sont présentés. Dans le cas d'écoulements cisaillés, on a constaté que la valeur moyenne de concentration d'effluent calculée au travers de sections transversales à l'écoulement n'était pas une quantité invariante tout au long de l'écoulement. Un gradient de vitesse négatif induit une augmentation de cette moyenne à mesure que l'on s'éloigne du rejet alors qu'un gradient positif produit l'effet inverse. Un gradient du coefficient de diffusion turbulente détermine un changement du profil de concentration à l'intérieur d'une section transversale donnée, sans en changer cependant la valeur moyenne. Un gradient négatif augmente la valeur maximale de la distribution des concentrations. Un gradient positif fait diminuer la valeur maximale en aplatissant l'allure du profil.Le modèle mathématique a ensuite été vérifié à l'aide d'un modèle physique. Un modèle réduit respectant les similitudes d'écoulement a été bâti. Les gradients de vitesse du fluide et les gradients du coefficient de diffusion étaient provoqués par l'introduction de tirants d'eau non uniformes dans chaque section transversale. Les mesures réalisées ont permis d'estimer les coefficients de diffusion turbulente.

Abstract:
L'objet du present memoire concerne les transferts de masse et de chaleur entre une paroi verticale saturee d'eau chaude et l'air ambiant. Afin de chiffrer l'influence du transfert de masse sur les transferts de chaleur, deux plaques, l'une seche l'autre humide, de meme dimensions, ont ete utilisees. La hauteur de ces plaques etant de 20 cm et les ecarts de temperature de l'ordre de la dizaine de degres, les nombres de rayleigh thermiques et massiques sont de l'ordre de 10#6, le nombre de lewis etant proche de l'unite. On expose les equations de conservation de la masse, de la quantite de mouvement, de l'energie et de la concentration des especes. Adoptant les hypotheses classiques de la couche limite bidimensionnelle en regime permanent, on aboutit aux solutions non-semblables representatives du probleme pose conformement aux resultats obtenus par ferreira. Les moyens de mesure utilises sont ensuite decrits en detail: l'interferometrie holographique en temps reel pour l'obtention du champ de temperature dans la couche limite et la velocimetrie laser a effet doppler pour celle du champ de vitesse. La derniere partie du memoire est consacree a la presentation des resultats experimentaux ainsi qu'a leur analyse critique. On releve d'abord que la comparaison theorie-experience donne toute satisfaction, sauf vers l'exterieur de la couche limite. Par ailleurs, la confrontation entre les resultats obtenus au voisinage de la plaque seche et ceux au voisinage de la plaque humide montre que les flux de chaleur obtenus par evaluation de la pente a l'origine du profil de temperature et les debits massiques sont sensiblement augmentes par la presence du transfert de masse. L'ensemble des resultats presentes constitue une justification solide de la modelisation numerique des echanges couples de chaleur et de masse proposee par ferreira

Abstract:
Ce travail presente l'etude experimentale des champs turbulents dans une couche limite supersonique soumise a un flux de chaleur parietal important. Apres quelques resultats sur les champs moyens qui completent ceux existant deja, les champs turbulents de vitesse et de temperature sont decrits, permettant d'obtenir une banque de donnees originale. On observe ainsi une forte augmentation de la turbulence thermique avec le chauffage de la paroi, coherente avec des representations adimensionnelles des resultats. Les tenseurs des differents moments des fluctuations de vitesse sont egalement decrits. Des representations geometriques adaptes permettent d'en synthetiser les proprietes. Il apparait ainsi que la structure du tenseur de reynolds est conservee a travers la couche limite sans que ce chauffage apporte une modification notable. Une premiere determination des liaisons entre les fluctuations de vitesse et de temperature est presentee et discutee. Ces differents resultats aerodynamiques originaux ont necessite le developpement de plusieurs points de metrologie qui faisaient defaut. Ainsi, il est apportee une solution aux mesures par fil chaud pour les ecoulements transsoniques, a faibles nombres de reynolds et avec de fortes variations de temperature d'arret, applicable egalement aux ecoulements supersoniques. Ceci permet d'obtenir les premieres mesures de turbulence thermique et de sa correlation avec le champ fluctuant de vitesse en ecoulement a grande vitesse fortement chauffe. Il est egalement aborde certains problems lies a l'utilisation d'un anemometre laser bidirectionnel dans des ecoulements turbulents a grande vitesse. Abstract:
Cette thèse a été réalisée dans le cadre des programmes européens COST F2 " Electrochemical Flow Measurements " et COST P6 " MagnetoFluidDynamics ". Ce sujet pluridisciplinaire porte sur l'étude des phénomènes convectifs aux voisinages de l'interface solide/liquide par la méthode électrodiffusionnelle (couplage des phénomènes hydro/thermo/électrochimiques). Sur le plan de la métrologie un nouveau type de capteurs électrodiffusionnels (" screen-printed electrodes ") a été étudié et mis au point. Un accent particulier a été porté sur l'étalonnage des capteurs vis-à-vis des mesures du frottement pariétal local et des caractéristiques statistiques de la turbulence dans la sous-couche visqueuse. Cela a permis d'obtenir des données expérimentales fiables pour la caractérisation fine du mélange d'un scalaire passif près de la paroi. Les mesures expérimentales effectuées dans un canal plan ont été confrontées avec les simulations numériques directes (DNS), dont les résultats sont très prometteurs. Une démarche vers le développement d'une nouvelle méthode de diagnostics des écoulements basée sur les mesures du temps de transfert des espèces électroactives entre deux électrodes a été proposée. Sur le plan du contrôle des transferts interfaciaux deux types d'actionneurs ont été étudiés : l'influence d'un champ magnétique (les forces de Lorentz) et l'influence des tensioactifs. Les méthodes développées ont été utilisées pour trois applications industrielles: -la modélisation (logiciel FLUENT) des processus galvaniques dans un bain d'étamage (collaboration contractuelle avec la Société PEM (" Protection Electrolytique des Métaux "); - l'étude de la croissance des biofilms (12ème CPER, programme " Eaux " en collaboration avec la société " Concorde Chimie ") ; - l'utilisation de l'impédancemètrie pour les simulations du comportement des batteries Lithium-Ion en collaboration avec la société SAFT
The dissertation has been realized within the framework of European programmes COST F2 " Electrochemical Flow Measurements " and COST P6 " MagnetoFluidDynamics ". This multidisciplinary topic deals with the studies of convective transfer phenomena near solid/liquid interfaces (coupling of hydro/thermo/electrochemical phenomena). The new type of electrodiffusional sensors (" screen-printed electrodes ") have been studied and adapted for practical applications. Special attention has been paid to the calibration of electrochemical probes with respect to local wall shear stress measurements as well as to the measurements of the statistical characteristics of the turbulence within the viscous sublayer. This allows us to obtain reliable data for the fine characterisation of the near wall turbulent mixing of a passive scalar. The results of experimental measurements in a plane channel are in a good agreement with the results of direct numerical simulations (DNS). A new method of electrochemical flow diagnostic based on the measurements of the delay time have been proposed and studied. Two types of control of the interfacial transfer phenomena have been studied : electromagnetic actions (influence of the Lorentz forces) and surfactants. The methods developed have been used for three industrial applications : - modelling (software FLUENT) of the galvanic processes (contact collaboration with the company PEM: " Protection Electrolytique des Métaux "); -study of biofilms growth (12th CPER, program "WATER" in collaboration with the company " Concorde Chimie "); - simulation of Lithium-Ion behaviour by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (in collaboration with the company " SAFT ")

La spectroscopie de dissociation par absorption de photons infrarouges (IRPD) permet d’obtenir les signatures vibrationnelles d’espèces chargées en phase gazeuse, telles que de petits peptides ou des ions hydratés dans des agrégats d’eau. L’attribution des modes de vibration pour établir une relation entre le spectre expérimental et une structure moléculaire est une tâche délicate et nécessite le recours à la modélisation moléculaire.Ce manuscrit présente un ensemble d’outils théoriques pour le calcul et l’attribution de spectres vibrationnels, basée principalement sur la dynamique moléculaire classique et le champ de forces polarisable AMOEBA, ainsi que son application à des ions gazeux de tailles diverses. Les ions hydratés dans des agrégats d’eau M(H2O)n (n allant de 6 à 100) sont caractérisés par une dynamique importante, et leur spectre expérimental ne peut pas être décrit par une seule structure. La signature des peptides évolue avec la température et les effets d’anharmonicité dynamique. Ils peuvent également être le siège de mécanismes de transfert de proton, présentant une signature vibrationnelle très caractéristique.La surface d’énergie potentielle de ces systèmes est explorée par la dynamique moléculaire classique en trajectoires individuelles ou avec échange de répliques, afin d’engendrer des structures énergétiquement stables. Pour les plus petits systèmes, les méthodes quantiques DFT et post-HF sont utilisées pour confirmer les structures de plus basse énergie, calculer leurs spectres IR statiques et proposer des attributions des modes de vibration. Pour les plus systèmes de plus grandes tailles, c’est-à-dire les ions dans des gouttes d’eau de plusieurs dizaines de molécules, la simulation des spectres IR à température finie est basée sur la transformée de Fourier de la fonction d’autocorrélation du moment dipolaire (DACF), calculée pour une trajectoire de dynamique moléculaire classique. Cette méthode n’offrant pas d’accès direct aux modes normaux de vibration, nous avons implémenté une méthode d’attribution dynamique, basée sur la Driven Molecular Dynamics (DMD) et couplée au DACF. La combinaison AMOEBA/DACF/DMD a été utilisée pour reproduire et attribuer le spectre du dipeptide Ace-Phe-Ala-NH2, et ceux d’ions hydratés dans des agrégats d’eau.Enfin, la signature vibrationnelle d’un transfert de proton ne peut être décrite, ni par des méthodes statiques quantiques, ni par la dynamique classique. Sa modélisation a nécessité le développement d’un modèle Empirical Valence Bond (EVB) à deux états, couplé au champ de forces polarisable AMOEBA. Le modèle EVB a été implémenté dans la suite logicielle Tinker. Il permet de reproduire le comportement dynamique du transfert de proton au sein de petits peptides et de diacides déprotonés, ainsi que la signature spectroscopique observée expérimentalement.Une partie importante des applications de ces développements concerne des ions simples hydratés dans des nano-gouttelettes, et en particulier l’ion sulfate de grande importance environnementale. Nous avons pu reproduire de façon satisfaisante, pour la première fois, les spectres d’agrégats contenant jusqu’à 100 molécules d’eau. Le principal contributeur à cette spectroscopie expérimentale est l’équipe d’E. Williams à l’université de Californie à Berkeley. Nous avons établi avec eux une collaboration pour compléter ce travail en modélisant les spectres IR d’ions sulfates hydratés [SO4(H2O)n=9-36]2-, dont ils ont obtenu les signatures expérimentales
Spectroscopy dissociation by absorption of infrared photons (IRPD) provides vibrational signatures of charged species in the gas phase, such as small peptides or hydrated ions in water clusters. The vibrational normal modes assignment to establish a relationship between the experimental spectrum and molecular structure is a delicate task and requires the use of molecular modeling.This manuscript presents a set of theoretical tools for calculation and assignment of vibrational spectra, based mainly on classical molecular dynamics and polarizable AMOEBA force field, and its application to gaseous ions of various sizes. Hydrated ions in water clusters M(H2O)n (n in 6-100 range) are characterized by a dynamic behavior, and their experimental spectrum can not be described by a single structure. The signature of peptides changes with temperature and dynamic anharmonicity effects. They can also be the site of proton transfer mechanisms, with a very characteristic vibrational signature.The potential energy surface of these systems is explored by classical molecular dynamics in individual trajectories or replica exchange to generate energetically stable structures. For smaller systems, quantum methods, as DFT and post-HF, are used to confirm the lowest energy structures, calculate their static IR and propose normal modes assignments. For larger systems, i.e ions in water drops of several tens of molecules, the simulation of IR spectra at finite temperature is based on the Fourier transform of the autocorrelation function of the dipole moment (DACF), calculated during a classical molecular dynamics trajectory. As this method does not allow direct access to the vibrational normal modes, we implemented a method of dynamic assigments, based on the Driven Molecular Dynamics (DMD) and coupled to the DACF. The combination AMOEBA /DACF / DMD was used to reproduce and assign the spectrum of the dipeptide Ace-Phe-Ala-NH2, and those of hydrated ions in water clusters.Finally, the vibrational signature of a proton transfer can not be described by quantum static methods or by classical dynamics. Its modeling required the development of a two states Empirical Valence Bond Model (EVB), coupled with AMOEBA polarizable force field. The two states EVB model was implemented in the software TINKER. It can reproduce the dynamic behavior of proton transfer in small peptides and deprotonated acids, as well as the spectroscopic signatures observed experimentally.An important part of the applications of these developments relates simple hydrated ions in nano-droplets, and in particular the sulfate ion of great environmental importance. We were able to reproduce satisfactorily, for the first time, the spectra of clusters containing up to 100 water molecules. The main contributor to this experimental spectroscopy is the team of E. Williams from the University of California of Berkeley. We have established cooperation with them to complete this work by modeling the IR spectra of hydrated sulfates ions [SO4(H2O) n=9-36]2-, for which they obtained experimental signatures

Cette these presente deux experiences de manipulation d'un jet atomique de cesium a l'aide de faisceaux lasers suivant une dimension transverse. Dans la premiere experience, nous avons observe les effets de refroidissement doppler et sub-doppler sur le jet atomique pour differentes configurations de melasses. L'etude des deux transitions f=4f=5 et f=3f=2 de la raie d#2 du cesium montre que le desaccord entre la frequence laser et la frequence atomique doit etre negatif (rouge) dans le premier cas et positif (bleu) dans le second. Nous avons aussi mis en evidence que, sous l'effet d'un champ magnetique statique, les melasses ne se produisent plus autour de la vitesse transverse nulle mais aussi autour de vitesses non nulles, qui evoluent lineairement avec la valeur de ce champ magnetique. La seconde experience concerne le transfert adiabatique de population et de quantite de mouvement dans le cas de la transition f=4f=4 de la raie d#2 du cesium. Dans une configuration #+-#- du champ electromagnetique, la transition f=4f=4 presente un etat piege quelque soit l'etat du champ. Le transfert adiabatique consiste a maintenir l'atome dans l'etat piege lorsque l'etat du champ electromagnetique varie lentement. Ce processus ne fait pas intervenir l'emission spontanee et les coherences internes de l'atome sont conservees. Dans les meilleures conditions experimentales, nous avons obtenu un taux de transfert adiabatique d'environ 55%. Cette limitation est due a la presence des niveaux hyperfins voisins f'=3 et 5 du niveau excite. Nous avons mis en evidence la tres grande selectivite en vitesse de ce processus lorsque les champs #+ et #- se propagent en sens oppose.

In continuum mechanics, when a problem is solved with the finite element method, field are known on nodes or on integration points, on a given mesh of the structure. If we which to use these results to perform a calculation on a second mesh, a data transfer is inevitable, especially in studies which imply adapting mesh process, or for coupling several codes. Numerical simulation must take this fact into account, which is not entirely the case today. So R&D division of EDF is eager to use some tools to remove this lock, in the software Code_Aster.There is a sum up of the work dine during the thesis. The objectives are the following: propose some methods for fields transfers, compare and describe these different approaches with theoretical analysis and numerical errors, implement one of these methods in Code_Aster, validate this implementation on some industrial cases

L'interprétation des spectres compliqués de l'atmosphère solaire magnétisée requiert des modèles théoriques adéquats de transfert radiatif hors ETL. Dans la première partie, la théorie quantique de la polarisation est revue ainsi que celle du transfert radiatif hors ETL de 2$^{\rm e}$ espèce. Une notation générale est introduite pour traiter numériquement la matrice densité atomique. Une technique de ''lambda-operator splitting'' est présentée et utilisée pour développer une méthode originale de préconditionnement analogue à l'algorithme itératif de Jacobi. De nombreux processus sont pris en compte: l'effet Zeeman, l'effet Paschen-Back, l'effet Hanle, la polarisation atomique, les croisements de niveaux, le pompage optique, la (dé)polarisation par collisions. Une technique multigrille non linéaire est développée dans le cadre du transfert de rayonnement polarisé et l'efficacité de la méthode est discutée. Les possibilités de ce nouveau solveur sont démontrées sur l'exemple d'une raie optiquement épaisse d'un atome multiterme dans le régime de l'effet Paschen-Back. Dans la deuxième partie, la polarisation par impact de la raie H-alpha de l'hydrogène est étudiée. Les modèles semi-empiriques de la chromosphère éruptive sont utilisés pour déterminer les effets différentiels du faisceau de protons sur les profils d'intensité et de polarisation. Il est montré qu'il est improbable que les faisceaux de protons soient la source de la polarisation linéaire observée. Dans le dernier chapitre, il est montré que les courants électriques de retour sont un ingrédient significatif de la formation des raies et ils sont proposés comme une source possible de la polarisation observée.

Abstract This paper presents the adaptation of tolerance transfer techniques to a model called TTRS for Technologically and Topologically Related Surfaces. According to this model, any three-dimensional part can be represented as a succession of surface associations forming a tree. Additional tolerancing information can be associated to each TTRS represented as a node on the tree. This information includes dimensional tolerances as well as tolerance chart values. Rules are then established to simulate tolerance chains or stack up along with tolerance charts directly from the graph. This way it becomes possible to combine traditional one dimensional tolerance transfer techniques with a powerful three-dimensional representation model providing high technological contents.

One of the prime focuses in the design of highly adaptive granular material is in ability to passively control the flow of energy through it by means of trapping, redirection and scattering. In this study we demonstrate that one of the possible mechanisms to achieve efficient control over the propagating shock wave in the material is the usage of weakly interacting, non-compressed granular chains. In the latest computational studies we have demonstrated that the shock waves initially localized on a finite amount of chains can be efficiently redirected to the neighboring granular chains. In this work, we present an analytical and numerical approach to the concept of targeted energy transfer (TET) in granular media. We consider two weakly coupled granular chains which have on-site potential. This on-site potential arises if the granular chains are mounted on linear elastic foundation. We propose two different mechanisms for TET in granular media: (i) decouple the coupling, and (ii) stratification of the foundation. Each mechanism provides an efficient way of localization of energy in one of the two chains. For the second mechanism, one chain with varying parameter is excited by an initial impulse but coupled with another chain with constant parameter is initially at rest and we transform the governing equation of the granular chain system into two coupled oscillators and thus made an analogy between strongly nonlinear granular chain with the quantum Landau-Zener tunneling. The revealed phenomena open up the possibility of designing granular media as shock mitigators by efficiently redirecting the incoming energy to the neighboring granular chain, i.e. it gives a passive control over the incoming energy by redirecting among the granular networks.

Abstract Heat transport mediated by near-field interaction in particulate system (e.g. chain of particles) is one of the research focuses in thermal transport in micro-nanoscale. Near field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) characteristics of metallic nanoparticle chains (separation distance between neighboring particles is h) are analyzed by means of both coupled electric-magnetic dipole approximation and quadrupole approximation. Thermal conductance (G) between the central particle and other particle with different separation gaps (Δx) is calculated at both 300K and 1200K. Corrected polarizability is used to take quadrupole effect into consideration when calculating the NFRHT in extreme near field where dipole approximation ceases to be valid. Temperature distributions along several different chains of particles due to NFRHT are also predicted. Results show that, according to the asymptotic behavior of distribution of G along metallic chains similar as that observed in SiC chains, heat super-diffusion is demonstrated at both 300K and 1200K in metallic nanoparticle chains. At 300K, the contribution of quadrupole results in that thermal conductance responses to h in different way in metallic and dielectric particle chains. Temperature distribution and heat flow are the two key parameters used to characterize the heat transport in chains of particles. Ag particles in SiC chain act as barriers during the radiative heat transport process. Heat super-diffusion, as well as some other characteristics of NFRHT, observed in metallic nanoparticle chains may help for insight of heat transport in particulate system and new design of device in micro-nanoscale.

Results show that thermal conductivity of the strained silicon nanowires and thin films decreases continuously when the strain changes from compressive to tensile. However, the thermal conductivity has a peak value under compressive strain for SWCNT and at zero strain for single layer graphene. In contrast, thermal conductivity of polymer materials increases with increasing tensile strain. The underlying mechanisms are analyzed in this paper for both types of materials. We found that the thermal conductivity of silicon and carbon based materials can be related to the phonon dispersion curve shift and structural buckling under strain and for polymer chains thermal conductivity directly connects to the orientations of the chains. This thermal conductivity dependence with strain can guide us to tune the thermal conductivity for materials in applications.

Chaotic fluid mixing is generally considered to enhance fluid-wall heat transfer and thermal homogenisation in laminar flows. However, this essentially concerns the transient stage towards a fully-developed (thermally-homogeneous) asymptotic state and then specifically for high Pe´clet numbers Pe (convective heat transfer dominates). The role of chaos in the asymptotic state at lower Pe, relevant to continuously-operating compact devices as, for instance, micro-electronics cooling systems, remains largely unexplored to date. The present study seeks to gain first insight into this matter by the analysis of a representative model problem: heat transfer in the 2D time-periodic lid-driven cavity flow induced via non-adiabatic walls. The asymptotic time-periodic thermal state is investigated in terms of both the temperature field and the thermal transport routes. This combined Eulerian-Lagrangian approach enables fundamental investigation of the connection between heat transfer and chaotic mixing and its ramifications for temperature distributions and heat-transfer rates. The analysis exposes a very different role of chaos in that its effectiveness for thermal homogenisation and heat-transfer enhancement is in low-Pe asymptotic states marginal at best. Here chaos may in fact locally amplify temperature fluctuations and thus hamper instead of promote thermal homogeneity. These findings reveal that optimal thermal conditions are not always automatic with chaotic mixing and may depend on a more delicate interplay between flow and heat-transfer mechanisms.

Controlling intangible transfers of technology (ITT) and software—including in the context of the Missile Technology Control regime (MTCR)—is a known challenge, but the growth of the NewSpace industry and advances in emerging technologies make it a particularly timely topic. This report explores a series of cases of export control violations and cases where the risk of a possible violation was identified involving missile-related ITT or software. The report also develops a typology of violations and identifies associated compliance challenges. This paper explores some of the key challenges that emerge from the case studies, including the increasing reliance on ITT and software, which have become easier and more common, by companies in the aerospace and NewSpace sectors and their global supply chains. The paper concludes by offering recommendations for the MTCR to strengthen its efforts to address the proliferation risks posed by ITT and software.

This project is a follow up to the project titled "Effects of Tensile Loading on Remaining Strength of Corroded Casing." The objective is to test additional samples of corroded casing that will fail at typical storage well operating pressures and transfer the developed technology to MFL vendors for use in storage fields. A test matrix of 13 specimens was developed and tested. The test specimens consisted of natural corrosion and machined defects. Prior to testing: � the specimen material was characterized with tensile, Charpy V-notch, hardness, and chemical tests and � the test specimens were shipped to 2 MFL vendors for logging. The results of the testing and MFL characterization are summarized in this report.

The European Union (EU) and Japan have both adopted de-risking measures in their economic relations with China. Driven by concerns over the security and geoeconomic implications of their dependence on China, the EU and Japan have introduced legislation and regulations to mitigate against risks in supply chains, transfers of sensitive technologies and investments, both inward and outward. However, while consensus exists on the need to adopt de-risking measures, the approaches adopted by the EU and Japan vary due to several factors: the nature and extent of their economic interdependence with China, the profile and strength of domestic industries, government–business collaboration and, in the EU’s case, variations in member states’ positions and degrees of enforcement. Both the EU and Japan also recognize the importance of more closely coordinating with each other to achieve their goals: to mitigate or manage potential risks, to enhance resilience, and to maintain (and, where necessary, promote) economic ties with China in areas of mutual benefit.

North-eastern Neo-Aramaic (also known as NENA) languages and literature are a prosperous and encouraging field of research. They abound with oral traditions and expressions that incorporate various spoken forms including everyday language, tales, songs, chants, prayers, proverbs, and more. These are used to transfer culture, knowledge, and community values. Some types of oral forms are idioms and fixed expressions. Idioms are extremely problematic to translate for a number of reasons, including: cultural and linguistic differences between languages; their specific connection to cultural practices and interpretations, and the difficulty of transferring the same meanings and connotations into another language with accuracy. This paper explores how to define and classify idioms, and suggests specific strategies and procedures to translate idioms from the NENA dialect Bartella (a local Aramaic dialect in Nineveh Plain) into English – as proposed by Baker (1992: 63–78). Data collection is based on 15 idioms in Bartella dialect taken from the heritage play Khlola d baretle teqta (Wedding in the old Bartella). The findings revealed that only three strategies are helpful to transfer particular cultural conceptualisations: using an idiom of similar meaning and form; using an idiom of similar meaning but different form, and translation by paraphrasing. Based on the findings, the author provides individuals and institutions with suggestions on how to save endangered languages and dialects, particularly with regard to the religious minorities’ heritage. Key among these recommendations is encouraging researchers and scholars to direct translation projects and activities towards preserving minority languages with their oral heritage and cultural expressions, which are susceptible to extinction.

The article aims to analyze the structural changes and the Ukrainian labor market organization in the condition of military aggression against Ukraine. The Ukrainian economy encounters the devastating destructions and losses of economic entities, enormous capital, and labor under the effect of military aggression. Structural changes include a change in the industrial structure of production, the destruction of large enterprises, and supply chains, the loss of part of the labor force, and fluctuations between skilled and unskilled jobs. Thus, SMEs in the service sector suffer due to the reduction of the population in cities, which causes both a reduction in demand for certain types of services (hotel and restaurant business, beauty salons, providers of extracurricular educational services, etc.) and a reduction in the supply of highly qualified specialists (IT sector, experts in financial, design and consulting services). Small business because of the war feels caught between the minimum possible sale of their products and reduced demand. The basic research questions are identifying and estimating the urgent needs of the labor market and capital. It will be directed to define sectors that can speed up the process of rebuilding the economy. Diversifying the economy, increasing product/service sophistication, using comparative advantages and transfer of resources (both labor and capital) leads to more productive activities and a rise in well-being.

In this study, an analytical method for evaluating the structural performance, including maximum deflection, load-bearing, and energy absorption capacity of a steel wire-ring net, was proposed to effectively design the ring net of the flexible barrier systems. Puncture tests of the ring nets and two-point traction tests of the three-ring chains with various wire-ring specifications were conducted. Correlation analysis was used to test the results between ring nets and chains, revealing that three structural performance indicators of the test specimens were strongly related. The ring net’s structural performance was affected specifically by ring chains on the shortest load transfer path. Accordingly, a three-ring chain with a flexible boundary corresponded to a fibre–spring element. A three-dimensional analytical model of the ring net was established. Explicit formulas for computing the three indicators of the ring net were derived. Comprehensive quasi-static and impact tests, using different shapes and sizes of punching devices, were conducted, providing valuable data to calibrate and validate this analytical method. The ability of the model in yielding consistent results when implemented at the structure scale was then assessed, based on the data of full-scale impact tests on a 1500kJ-energy rockfall barrier. Lastly, the effects of various factors, such as single ring geometry, the length–width ratio of the net, loading area size, boundary stiffness, and load rate, influencing the structural performance indicators of the ring net were investigated, respectively.

Asia and Latin America are among the world's fastest growing regions. They demonstrated strong resilience and rapid recovery following the global economic crisis, and have many useful lessons to share. For instance, Asia can gain from Latin America's experience of pension systems, cash transfer programs, urban infrastructure development, and agricultural modernization. Similarly, Latin America can benefit from Asia's experience in manufacturing production and supply chains, human capital formation, public-private sector partnerships, and regional financial cooperation initiatives, such as the Chiang Mai Initiative. Both regions have large domestic markets. And despite strong economic development, both still have large populations living in poverty. Both regions also have unique strengths-whether in natural resources, industry, or services. Building on these complementarities will continue to underpin our interregional relationship. We are committed to building more mature and diverse trade patterns, as well as more sustained investment and cooperation partnerships.
