Abstract:
With both the growing importance of integrating studies of air-sea interaction and the interest in the general problem of global warming, the appearance of the second edition of this popular text is especially welcome. Thoroughly updated and revised, the authors have retained the accessible, comprehensive expository style that distinguished the earlier edition. Topics include the state of matter near the interface, radiation, surface wind waves, turbulent transfer near the interface, the planetary boundary layer, atmospherically-forced perturbations in the oceans, and large-scale forcing by sea surface buoyancy fluxes. This book will be welcomed by students and professionals in meteorology, physical oceanography, physics and ocean engineering.

Halliday, Daniel. Inheritance and the Intergenerational Replication of Inequality. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198803355.003.0006.

Abstract:
This chapter defends the claim that inheritance plays a causal role in enabling or maintaining conditions of economic segregation. This claim is advanced by addressing one reason for doubting its truth, namely that wealth transfers typically occur too late to affect the social position of the recipient. In response, emphasis is placed on the cumulative effects of inheritance rather than its immediate effects on the beneficiaries of wealth transfers. The key idea here is the way the receipt of wealth affects an individual’s ability to exercise partiality towards younger members of the family. It is argued that the unequal distribution of inheritance drives the further differentiation of parenting styles in ways that compound the way valuable nonfinancial capital becomes concentrated into wealthy sectors of the population. This observation is applied in defence of taxing second-generation inheritance (somewhat) more heavily than inheritance from newly accumulated wealth.

Abstract:
Focusing on Muslim Macedonian Roma in New York, this article analyzes dance as a gendered expressive behavior embedded in community ritual events. Dance expresses social relationships, status, and familial alliances; it is a dynamic interactive behavior that can transform and build relationships, foster communication in the community, or enact conflict. Because solo female dance may be interpreted as sexualized, its dynamics are carefully monitored; women thus performatively negotiate their display of dance in varied contexts. Two generations of Roma are compared in terms of attitudes, style, and repertoire, showing how dance and music have retained their symbolic place in community life and ritual.

Abstract:
In this chapter, it is argued that the study of World Englishes (WE) should assume a more central place in the analysis of variation and change in the context of language contact. Because they emerge from situations of bilingualism and contact, WE varieties are highly informative with regard to the structural issues of code-switching and convergence (also termed structural borrowing, transfer, interference, imposition). The inherently mixed nature of WE is shown here to mirror the diverse structural patterns that are commonly encountered in bilingual speech. It is argued that different mixing patterns arise in response to the social and medial embedding of WE vernaculars at the community, the individual, and the interactional levels. Social evaluations of relative prestige, individual projections of style, stance, and identity, and the complex nature of multilingual interaction conspire to bring about complex, new language structures.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that John Cage's Muzak-plus ultimately addresses his idealistic belief that art could foster a revolution in society, one that would lead not to a transfer of power but, in an anarchist fashion, to its pulverization in the hands of the individual members of a collective. However, in the aftermath of World War II, any suggestion that art could be at the service of society was met with increased suspicion. Whether directly or indirectly, suggested Cage himself, any willingness to improve the world may only end up making the matter worse. One could read this warning as a summary of Muzak's self-styled ambition.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the process related to policy-making as well as potential determinants of policy choices. It begins with a discussion of conceptual models of policy-making, namely: the institutional, rational, incremental, group, elite, and process models. It then considers the policy cycle, which models the policy process as a series of political activities, consisting of agenda setting, policy formulation, policy adoption, implementation, and evaluation. It also analyses the role of institutions, frames, and policy styles in policy-making and concludes with an assessment of the most crucial domestic and international factors shaping the design of policies, focusing in particular on theories of policy diffusion, policy transfer, and cross-national policy convergence, along with international sources that affect domestic policy-making.

Abstract:
Liberal arts colleges focus on undergraduate education, emphasizing the development of critical thought, the whole person, and values consistent with ethical participation in a civil society. Liberal arts music faculty now recognize the need to remap the music major and transform how music is taught and learned in order to remain relevant in the current economic and cultural climate, but the process is challenging. This chapter explores how liberal arts music faculty are striving to meet the challenge, using data from the Internet, a survey questionnaire, and interviews to compare the music major at thirteen colleges. We conclude that finding a balance between the conservatory-style curriculum and new curricular models does not imply replacing the Western concert tradition. Rather, it involves responding proactively to broader changes in musical life and recognizing the role of music in liberal education.

Abstract:
Stanley applies the same user-friendly format that made her popular guide to teaching the six steps of the research process to high school students such a success. In this new volume geared toward middle school students, field-tested lessons, anecdotes, reproducible charts and templates, and research ideas all work together to transform the research process into bite-size steps that are both adaptable to various teaching styles and not overwhelming for students. By applying Stanley's methods you'll be pursuing education reforms including integrating technology, improving information literacy, teaching critical thinking, modeling collaborative instruction, and adapting research for second language learners and learning disabled students.

Abstract:
How is music affected by its translation, interpretation and adaptation with, through, and by dance? How might notation of dance and music act as a form of translation? How does music influence the creation of dance? How might dance and music be understood to exchange and transfer their content, sense and process during both the creative process and the interpretative process? Bringing together chapters that explore theory and practice, this book questions the process and role translation has to play in the context of music and dance. It provides a range of case studies across this interdisciplinary field, and is not restricted by genre, style or cultural location. As one of very few volumes to explore translation in relation to music and to overtly tackle this topic in terms of dance, it moves the argument from a broad notion of text and translation, to think critically about the sound and movement arts of music and dance, using translation as a model to better understand the collaboration of these art forms.

Abstract:
Using unusual sources and approaching tobacco from the perspective of users, producers, and objectors, this monograph provides an unparalleled view of the early transfer by the Russian market to smoking and presents the addictive, nicotine-soaked Russian cigarette – the papirosa -- and the sensory, medical, social, cultural, and gendered consequences of this unique style of tobacco use. Starting with the papirosa’s introduction in the nineteenth century and foundation as a cultural and imperial construct, the monograph moves through its emergence as a mass-use product of revolutionary potential, towards discussion as a moral and medical problem, on to its mass-marketing as a liberating object, and concluding as it became a point for increasing conflict for users, reformers, and purveyors. Material from newspapers, journals, industry publications, etiquette manuals, propaganda posters, popular literature, memoirs, cartoons, poetry, and advertising images is combined with wider scholarship in history, public health, anthropology, and addiction studies, for an ambitious social and cultural exploration of the interaction of institutions, ideas, practice, policy, consumption, identity, and the body. Utilizing these unique approaches and sources, the work reconstructs how early-Russian smokers experienced, understood, and presented their habit in all its biological, psychological, social, and sensory inflections.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a rhetorical analysis of “consciousness-raising hip-hop.” Merging personal stories with an encyclopedic knowledge of contemporary pop culture, it argues that a politically savvy subgenre of hip-hop artists are raising awareness about incarceration in the black community and producing effective strategies for community activism. The hip-hop movement plays an important role in illuminating the problems of the prison-industrial complex by creating spaces of prison protest and modeling sources of community care. The analysis of hip-hop focuses on the artists, music, and (life)styles that promote a type of citizen-orator that is Ciceronian in character. Particular attention is given to those hip-hop artists who fit the definition of “consciousness-raising” by providing hope to prisoners and communities working to transform the U.S. criminal-justice system.
