Abstract:
In this article, conceived of in an epistemological perspective, film history and history of psychology intersect in order to show how subject models are circulating around 1900 which are impregnated with scientific culture and social modernity.These models have the special quality of being defined first in pathological terms because they result from a diagnosis of the evils caused by the new industrial and capitalist society. However, the position required by the cinematic apparatus produces a spectator who is described as a subject-machine with the particular psychophysiological states that precisely concern the neurotic, the paramnesiac and the sleepwalker. If our point is to show how close the (para)medical and cinematic subjects are, we will also try to see how far cinema interacts with phenomena related to urbanity and other developments of Western civilisation, the latter being considered as a transforming agent of the psychic apparatus.

L’ambition de cet article est de proposer une lecture d’Annihilation à l’orée des théories féministes, et sur la science-fiction populaire, Donna Haraway, Christine Cornea et Vivian Sobchack parmi d’autres, ainsi que d’utiliser la « rime » comme nouvel outil de conceptualisation de la référence au cinéma. Le film d’Alex Garland propose un épissage à la fois de créatures et de thèmes chers aux films à la croisée de la science-fiction et de l’horreur, tels qu’Alien et The Thing. Une lecture de ces références et leur nature unique nous permet de dégager une définition singulière de la science-fiction.

Abstract:
A importância do cinema para os estudos históricos foi, e ainda é, objeto de discussão entre os historiadores, especialmente os que o reconhecem como uma fonte histórica. Considerando tal relevância à História, o objetivo deste artigo é realizar uma análise fílmica de obras que foram submetidas ao exame censório no decurso da ditadura militar brasileira, a saber: i) Terra em Transe (1967), de Glauber Rocha; ii) Iracema, uma Transa Amazônica (1976), de Jorge Bodanzky e Orlando Senna; iii) Pra Frente, Brasil (1982), de Roberto Farias; e iv) Cabra Marcado Para Morrer (1984), de Eduardo Coutinho. Para tanto, nos baseamos metodologicamente na perspectiva da História Comparada (BLOCH, 1998, p. 111 - 118; BARROS, 2007, 2013, p. 156 - 179), a qual nos permite relacionar as dimensões política, econômica, cultural e social, no contexto da ditadura militar, aos filmes selecionados, destacando as semelhanças e as diferenças entre eles e a sociedade em que estão inseridos. Assim, comparamos as produções fílmicas entre si e o regime ditatorial em questão, permitindo-nos compreender não só os filmes per se, mas também a complexidade da conjuntura durante o pós-1964.

This text seeks to explore the Argentine films Castro (Alejo Moguillansky, 2009) and El asaltante (Pablo Fendrik, 2007) from within the displacement of their characters through the city. This transit configures the organising element of the plots, determining the direction and rhythm of events. The escape motto will structure the film analyses, which are also twinned by the sensory apprehension that comes from the spaces they travel through. The notion of escape, as explored by Esteban Dipaola in Argentine cinema of the 1990s, continues to throb in mid-to-late 2000s production, and in these films represents the means by which the protagonists deploy critical attitudes—sometimes radical and explosive, sometimes silent—in the face of fixed notions, suggesting some scepticism about the “stability” and “order” that they (dis)encounter in normality. RESUMEN Este texto busca explorar los largometrajes argentinos Castro (Alejo Moguillansky, 2009) y El asaltante (Pablo Fendrik, 2007) a partir del desplazamiento de sus personajes por la ciudad. El transitar se configura como elemento organizador de las tramas, determinando la dirección y el ritmo de los acontecimientos. El tema de la fuga irá estructurando los análisis de las películas, las cuales también están relacionadas por la aprehensión sensorial que hacen de los espacios que recorren. La noción de fuga, tal y como fue explorada por Esteban Dipaola en el cine argentino de los años 90, continúa vigente en la producción de mediados/fines de la primera década del siglo XXI, y en estas películas es el recurso por medio del cual los protagonistas despliegan actitudes críticas – a veces radicales y explosivas, y a veces silenciosas – frente a nociones convencionales, lo cual hace pensar que existe un cierto escepticismo con relación a la “estabilidad” y al “orden” que ellos (des)encuentran en la normalidad. RESUMO Este texto busca explorar os longas-metragens argentinos Castro (Alejo Moguillansky, 2009) e El asaltante (Pablo Fendrik, 2007) a partir do deslocamento de seus personagens pela cidade. O transitar configura-se como elemento organizador das tramas, determinando a direção e o ritmo dos acontecimentos. O mote da fuga estruturará as análises dos filmes, os quais também se irmanam pela apreensão sensorial que fazem dos espaços que percorrem. A noção de fuga, conforme explorada por Esteban Dipaola no cinema argentino da década de 1990, continua a pulsar na produção de meados/fins dos anos 2000, e é, nestes filmes, o recurso através do qual os protagonistas desdobram atitudes críticas – às vezes radicais e explosivas, às vezes silenciosas – diante de noções fixas, sugerindo certo ceticismo em relação à “estabilidade” e à “ordem” que eles (des)encontram na normalidade.

O filme Closet Monster, escrito e dirigido por Stephen Dunn, considerado um dos dez melhores filmes canadenses do ano 2015 pelo TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), apresenta fortes influências do cinema queer e utiliza a música como elemento fundamental para caracterizar o protagonista, acompanhar a trama e conceder à obra um sentido que não seria o mesmo sem ela. Este artigo foca-se em uma cena próxima ao desenlace do filme (71'32"-75'43"), que se serve da peça musical pós-minimalista Trance 4, do compositor americano Michael Gordon, interpretada pelo grupo musical Icebreaker, concebida em 1995. Desse recorte emerge uma análise que tem como objetivos distinguir a contribuição da peça na composição da cena e discutir a influência mútua das linguagens musical e visual, ambas localizadas em tendências com características determinadas, quais sejam o cinema queer e o pós-minimalismo, respectivamente. Para tanto, a análise é apoiada em Román (2008), Leydon (2002) e Chion (2008), dentre outros autores, transitando entre conceitos como linguagem musivisual, pontos de sincronização e pós-minimalismo musical. O artigo inicia com considerações sobre música pós-minimalista, cinema queer e os protagonistas de Trance, à guisa de contextualização, seguidas pela exploração da cena fílmica de Closet Monster ambientada pela faixa musical Trance 4. Como conclusão, ressalta-se o papel da música na composição da cena. Pretende-se contribuir com este artigo para a ampliação dos debates sobre o uso de música pós-minimalista no cinema queer.

Em texto publicado em 1967, o cineasta brasileiro Glauber Rocha (1939-1981) reage aos críticos de seu re-cém-lançado filme Terra em Transe e compara o movimento do Cinema Novo, no qual ele desponta como principal articulador e porta-voz, à Semana da Arte Moderna de 1922. Tal paralelo dispara, nesse artigo, a investigação das leituras e interpretações que Glauber faz do evento fixado como fundador do Modernismo no Brasil e de um dos seus principais desdobramentos, a Antropofagia de Oswald de Andrade. Essa análise concentra-se principalmente no já citado Terra em Transe, bem como no filme inacabado História do Brasil, além de percorrer textos críticos e manifestos escritos pelo cineasta. Em uma encruzilhada de confluências e divergências entre cinema, antropologia e artes visuais, o objeto deste texto se articula com o desenvolvimento de um longa-metragem sobre a rede de filhos e filhas de santo e o terreiro do Pai Jairo, e a fronteira na cidade de Tabatinga (AM), entre Brasil, Peru e Colômbia. Temos como base uma experiência híbrida de pesquisa junto à rede de jovens gays e trans atuantes na produção local de Umbanda mais ou menos próximos do mercado do sexo nesta tríplice fronteira. Apostamos nas potências da imagem e do ato narrativo e fabulativo enquanto chaves para habitar e transitar por mundos hostis e fazer emergir contrapoderes para transformar o real. O território especulativo ocupa um lugar especial na criação de mundos dessa rede, e os espaços de partilha narrativa marcam o seu cotidiano. Os nossos encontros com ela são atravessados pelas performances narrativas das jovens e de suas entidades companheiras. Com base nessas interações, pudemos também inventar e propor dispositivos metodológicos de "contação de estórias". Para sustentar nossas análises, apresentamos aqui algumas das muitas sequências narrativas íntimas que emergiram desses encontros.

O Serviço de Censura e Diversões Públicas foi um importante órgão da burocracia estatal da ditadura civil-militar brasileira exercendo censura prévia de obras artísticas podendo vetar ou liberar sua exibição e execução. O artigo a seguir identifica, analisa e problematiza, nos termos da recepção cinematográfica, oito pareceres de censura dos filmes “Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol” (1964) e “Terra em Transe” (1967), ambos dirigidos pelo cineasta Glauber Rocha. Figura importante no que ficou conhecido como Cinema Novo, movimento cinematográfico brasileiro de vanguarda atuante no período de implantação da ditadura, seus filmes geraram repercussão às épocas de lançamento pela crítica político-social, perdurando como ícones até atualidade. Através da estética da recepção, utilizando as percepções de Hans Rober Jauss como parâmetro , objetiva-se compreender as diferentes chaves de leitura fílmica emitida pelos pareceristas do SCDP de modo a entender a relação histórica entre obra, autor, receptor e contexto histórico.

Partimos do filme Deus e o diabo na terra do sol (Glauber Rocha, 1964) para analisar a utilização de obras de Villa-Lobos nele e em outros três filmes do Cinema Novo brasileiro: O desafio (Paulo César Saraceni, 1965), Terra em transe (Glauber Rocha, 1967) e Os herdeiros (Carlos Diegues, 1968-1970). Estes três últimos tanto se relacionam entre si pela sua temática, quanto com o referido longa-metragem anterior de Glauber Rocha em diversas instâncias, como a musical e a suas associações de sentido ao que seria, para esses diretores, a identidade nacional. Mesmo com suas contradições, Villa-Lobos e sua música acabam se tornando muito representativos dessa identidade nos filmes do Cinema Novo, uma “alegoria da pátria”, como propôs Guerrini Júnior (2009).

Abstract:
This article examines the Cuban mobile cinema campaign in the 1960s as a case study for thinking about the relationship between cinema and mobility. I examine the rhetoric around mobile cinema in Cuban journals such as Cine Cubano, and in the documentary film Por primera vez (For the first time, 1967). I argue that cinema is linked with mobility in two primary ways: as a virtual mobility stimulated by onscreen images, and as a more literal mobility expressed by the transportation of film into remote rural sites of exhibition. These two kinds of mobility reflect the hopes and ambitions of filmmakers and critics energized by the resurgent nationalism of the Cuban revolution, and the excitement of cinema as a “new” technology in rural Cuba.

Este artigo busca identificar, na obra de Glauber Rocha, elementos ainda em dispersão de um projeto de teoria semiótica do Terceiro Mundo. Para isso, foram selecionados três tipos de signos que podem caracterizar os termos dessa semiótica: os signos do cinema, do transe e da revolução. Sob a influência de Peirce e de Deleuze acerca da semiótica e do cinema, a obra de Glauber pode ser pensada como um projeto cujo propósito principal é o de engendrar novos processos de significação que tenham a capacidade de significar o Terceiro Mundo em sua singularidade. A partir das semioses que engendra, Glauber se aproxima dos conceitos de opsignos e sonsignos propostos por Deleuze à luz de Peirce e que também caracterizam, sob determinados aspectos, a primeiridade: primazia da imagem pura e dos aspectos qualitativos da significação.

<p>Analisamos o uso da música preexistente de Villa-Lobos em dois filmes de Glauber Rocha dos anos 60, <em>Deus e o diabo na terra do sol </em>(1964) e <em>Terra em transe</em> (1967). Considerada por Guerrini Júnior (2009) como uma “alegoria da pátria” em grande parte dos filmes do Cinema Novo, a música de Villa-Lobos é bastante presente em <em>Deus e o diabo na terra do sol</em>. Porém, a peça musical do final do filme aponta para uma mudança de direção para uma atitude mais antropofágica e tropicalista em <em>Terra em transe</em>, onde a música de Villa-Lobos é parte de uma colcha de retalhos de estilos e gêneros. Consideramos aqui os significados que os trechos preexistentes de Villa-Lobos trazem para os dois filmes, além das relações com os elementos nacionais e populares e com os outros componentes da trilha sonora.</p>

“Where can I see this Vietnamese movie?” Try sitting on board a Vietnamese Airlines jet to Hanoi. In Vietnam, movie theaters have been replaced by multiplexes showing the latest American blockbusters. Foreigners are most likely to encounter Vietnamese cinema for the first time on the move, as they travel to the country, by selecting the World Cinema category of their in-flight entertainment system. Watching a Vietnamese movie will both distract them from the long-haul and give them a taste of their destination culture as they make their way there. Twice the displacement, experiencing Vietnamese cinema has become a vehicle for representations of mobility and an integral part of contemporary travel practices. Este estudo aborda a objetificação da mulher no cinema a partir dos filmes em Iracema, uma transa amazônica (1974) e Iracema, a virgem dos lábios de mel (1979). Valeu-se de pesquisa bibliográfica acerca da teoria do cinema e do contexto sociopolítico do Brasil nos anos de 1970 e trabalhou com análise fílmica a partir da teoria feminista do cinema. Os resultados apontaram que, mesmo tratando-se de dois filmes com propostas distintas, visto que um tem intenção política de denúncia social e o outro reflete uma adaptação fílmica do tipo canônico, ambos apresentam sinais do processo de objetificação da mulher na construção da protagonista, evidenciado por teóricas feministas nos anos de 1970 nos filmes clássicos hollywoodianos. Isto evidencia a preexistência de processos misóginos na produção do cinema contemporâneo. Concluímos que a teoria feminista do cinema segue como um referencial crítico relevante a análises e releituras fílmicas.

Teo Hernández (Ciudad Hidalgo 1939‐Paris 1992) began a prolific career as an experimental filmmaker after entering a self-imposed exile in Paris in 1966. With no formal training, he completed dozens of films on the amateur format of Super 8 before his untimely death at the height of the AIDS epidemic in France. Hernández’s cinema cannot be separated from his postcolonial experience as an undocumented immigrant in Europe. Based on his audio-visual and written work, this article examines how the filmmaker elaborated a unique film theory grounded in an auto-ethnographic appropriation of primitivist tropes. Through this queer exilic cinema, Hernández crafted an authorial persona around the figure of a shamanic filmmaker. I take the films Nuestra senõra de París/Our Lady of Paris (Hernández 1981‐82) and Pas de ciel/No Sky (Hernández 1987) as a point of departure to examine the construction of a cinematic ritual capable of inducing trance in the body of the spectator and the filmmaker.

Resumo: Este artigo, por meio da metodologia da análise comparativa, objetiva fazer uma leitura do romance Iracema (1865), de José de Alencar, para relacioná-lo ao filme Iracema: uma transa amazônica (1981), dirigido por Jorge Bodanzky e Orlando Senna. O referencial teórico abrange os postulados de Antonio Candido, Zilá Bernd, Wayne Booth, Marcel Martin, entre outros. Pelo fato de as obras analisadas corresponderem a mídias e épocas distintas, este estudo estabelece comparações concernentes à intermidialidade e aos contextos socio-históricos dos séculos XIX e XX. Com base nessa associação, é possível constatar que, apesar das diferenças midiáticas, o enredo do filme reflete questões políticas relativas à década de 1970, dando ênfase ao imperialismo, de modo a aprofundar alguns temas que a prosa romântica já utilizava, como, por exemplo, o antagonismo entre próprio e estrangeiro. Diante desses resultados, conclui-se que, no que se refere ao processo de colonização, o filme propõe nova abordagem interpretativa, por privilegiar os ideais modernistas. Dessa forma, este trabalho contempla dois momentos da história e da literatura brasileiras, focalizando nuances fundamentais na formação da identidade nacional. Abstract: This article, using comparative methodology, aims to review the novel Iracema (1865), by José de Alencar, in order to relate it to the film Iracema: uma transa amazônica (1981), directed by Jorge Bodanzky and Orlando Senna. The theoretical framework includes the postulates by Antonio Candido, Zilá Bernd, Wayne Booth, Marcel Martin, among others. Due to the fact that the analyzed works correspond to different media and historical contexts, this study proposes comparisons about intermediality and 19th and 20th centuries’ socio-historical aspects. Based on these oppositions, it is possible to observe that, despite the media differences, the film’s plot reflects 1970s political issues, mainly the Imperialism, in order to deepen some themes that romanticism prose already used, such as, for example, the antagonism between self and foreigner. With these results, the conclusion is that, with regard to the colonization process, the film offers a new interpretive approach, because it obeys modernist ideals. Thus, this paper covers two moments in Brazilian History and Literature, focusing on essential idiosyncrasies in the formation of national identity. <p>A “forma objetiva” pode ser considerada como central nas análises literárias e cinematográficas de Schwarz (2012d). Assim, revisando seus estudos e estabelecendo conexões com a contemporaneidade, este trabalho percorre discussões feitas pelo autor sobre <em>Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas </em>(Machado de Assis, 1881), “Pobre Alimária” (Oswald de Andrade, 1925), <em>Os Fuzis </em>(Ruy Guerra, 1964) e <em>Terra em transe </em>(Glauber Rocha, 1967). Depois apontamentos são feitos a respeito de <em>O som ao redor </em>(Kleber Mendonça Filho, 2012), buscando identificar também nela sua forma objetiva e sua respectiva dinâmica relacionada ao Brasil. Entretanto, o problema local jamais é visto como desassociado do âmbito global. Logo, em direção às considerações finais, associações são feitas com estudos do crítico norte americano Jameson (2000), especialmente no que concernem ao conceito de “mapeamento cognitivo”. Sendo assim, ao fim, demonstra-se o sentido pretendido por Schwarz ao se referir a certas ideias como estando fora do lugar (2012c).</p>

In July 1791, the story goes, a small voodoo gathering in Santo Domingo sparked the Haitian Revolution, the first black anti-colonial revolution in history. The glorious history of the “Republic of the black Jacobins” was often celebrated by Surrealist artists in New York and Paris in their exposé of the decadent state of colonial powers in the aftermath of the Second World War. For instance, Haiti is central to André Breton's anti-colonial manifesto, Aimé Cesaire's idea of negritude, Rudy Burckhardt's lyric film symphonies, and Zora Neale Hurston's novels on creole culture. In New York, negritude did not have quite the same revolutionary appeal as in Paris, where Josephine Baker was hailed as a Surrealist goddess of “natural” beauty and power. But the electric Haitian voodoo performances of dancer and choreographer Katherine Dunham attracted a diverse community of African-American artists, émigrés, intellectuals, and communist sympathizers in the off-limits clubs, cafés, and private parties in Harlem. In its uncontainable, carnivalesque power, open forms, and sexual energy, Haitian voodoo captured an attraction to the “primitive” that affected American intellectuals and popular culture alike. Before becoming a Hollywood star, Dunham, of mixed West African and Native American roots, traveled to Haiti to study voodoo rituals for an anthropology degree at the University of Chicago. Fusing American dance, European ballet, and voodoo movements, she became a symbol of the black diaspora. In a recent film interview, Dunham recalls how her young assistant (or “girl Friday,” in the parlance of the time) Maya Deren was fascinated by Haitian dance and would use it to steal the show in rehearsals, public performances, and glitzy parties. The daughter of Russian Jewish émigrés and Trotskyite activists, Deren was struck by the power of this syncretic dance, which blended different cultural backgrounds and formed political consciousnesses while always providing entertainment and energizing dinner parties and giving voice to invisible deities. In her experimental filmmaking, Deren infused this magnetic power of dance into cinema.

Estudo sobre como a Divisão de Censura e Diversões Públicas (DCDP) tratou o documentário brasileiro produzido nos anos de 1960/70 e 1980. Ao analisar os pareceres de censura de 23 filmes – documentos disponíveis no site do projeto Memória da censura no cinema brasileiro 1964-1988 – optou-se por estudar os casos de O país de São Saruê e Iracema, uma transa amazônica. Nas décadas de 1960/70 presenciamos o surgimento de um novo documentarismo que buscava retratar o “Brasil profundo”, o país das desigualdades que tanto se conflitava com a imagem desenvolvimentista que a propaganda da ditadura difundia. Ao analisar a censura a estes filmes constatou-se que as dinâmicas censórias se valeram tanto de questões morais quanto de posicionamentos políticos-ideológicos.

Resumo: Orfeu, de 1999, dirigido por Carlos Diegues, um dos raros filmes atuais a falar do negro, retoma a tradicional apologia do afro-descendente por seus dotes musicais. Vinicius de Moraes, com sua peça Orfeu da Conceição, que deu base ao filme Orfeu negro (1959) e ao Orfeu de Diegues, pretendeu universalizar a música negra (e, portanto, a música brasileira), ampliando-a de seu reduto de classe baixa, ligada às orgias do carnaval e aos transes de terreiro, para a experiência sublime do amor absoluto. Para tanto, recorreu ao mito órfico do poder encantatório da música, recurso claramente anti-realista. Ao adaptar Vinicius, Diegues acrescentou uma dimensão realista à história, tentando não perder os aspectos míticos e trágicos. De fato, no filme, a utopia do paraíso negro desenvolve-se pari passu com a dura realidade da favela.Palavras-chave: cinema brasileiro; negro; Orfeu.Abstract: Carlos Diegues’s Orpheus, 1999, one of the few contemporary films to focus on blacks, makes the traditional panegyric of the African descendents for their musical skills. Vinicius de Moraes, with his play Orfeu da Conceição, on which Black Orpheus (1959) and Diegues’s Orpheus were based, intended to universalise black music (therefore Brazilian music), upgrading it from its low class niche associated with carnival orgies and voodoo trances, to the sublime experience of absolute love. To that end, he resorted to the enchanting power of music contained in the Orphic myth, in a clearly anti-realistic attitude. When he adapted de Moraes, Diegues added a realistic dimension to the story, while trying to keep the mythic and tragic ones. Ophiuroids are well known called brittle star which is one member of the Phylum Echinodermata. Brittle stars have an important ecological role in the food chain that can support marine ecosystem. Brittle star are currently have no economic importance. However, the genus ophioderma can be used as aquarium decoration because it has an attractive color. This research aims to determine the level of diversity of brittle stars in Mokupa waters, Tombariri District, Minahasa Regency using the Shannon-Wiener diversity index. This research was conducted in June 2018 applying quadrant transect method. Species of brittle stars found there are 7 types of Macrophiothrix longipeda, Ophiomastix janualis, Ophiocoma brevipes, Ophiocoma schoenleinii, Ophiomastix annulosa, Ophiocoma scolopendrina and Ophiolepis cincta. Ophiomastix janualis is dominant species but not for Ophiocoma brevipes. Ophiuroids diversity in the Mokupa waters was classified into moderate class with a diversity index of 1,475 Keywords: Brittle Star, Diversity, Minahasa Regency. ABSTRAK Bintang mengular (Ophiuroidea) merupakan salah satu kelas yang tergolong dalam filum Echinodermata. Dari sudut ekonomi belum diketahui nilai ekonomis dari bintang mengular namun khususnya dari genus Ophioderma bisa dijadikan sebagai hiasan aquarium karena memiliki warna yang menarik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan tingkat keanekaragaman bintang mengular di perairan Desa Mokupa, Kecamatan Tombariri, Kabupaten Minahasa berdasarkan nilai indeks Shannon-Wiener. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada bulan Juni 2018 dengan menggunakan metode transek kuadrat. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian terdapat 7 jenis yang ditemukan yaitu, Macrophiothrix longipeda, Ophiomastix janualis, Ophiocoma brevipes, Ophiocoma schoenleinii, Ophiomastix annulosa, Ophiocoma scolopendrina dan Ophiolepis cincta. The non-confirmation to vexed societal gender norms places trans identities in an abjected state. Media, mainly cinema, plays an indispensable role in shaping, shunning, and promulgating such ideologies. To understand this discourse, the Malayalam films Ardhanaari (2015) and Njan Marykutty (2018) are taken to examine the question of “abjection”, a concept by Kristeva, and “doing gender”, by West and Zimmerman. The study argues that the abjection trans identities face forces them to perform their gender in accordance with cisnormative femininity. The study further argues that trans identities should embrace abjection and employ it as a political tool to disrupt the established hegemonic traditional gender structure and its definitions.

Abstract In this article, we briefly present the results of a multifaceted investigation of the book Ce que le jour doit à la nuit. We examine the effects produced on the novel by the transgression of multiple frontiers: identity, geographic, interlinguistic, translation, semiotic, etc. These are frontiers that both the writer, Yasmina Khadra, and her novel transgress. A necessary look at the circumstances in which the book was created will allow us to survey the types of frontier transgression: of the self, of the civilian and artistic identity, in order to concentrate on the crossing of interlinguistic frontiers (the translation into Romanian of the novel Ce que le jour doit à la nuit in this case), semiotic (its cinema adaptation and its subtitles).

As the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, everyone’s attention was brought to the topic of the health and safety of the entire human population. It has been proven that wearing a face mask can help limit the spread of the virus. Despite the enormous efforts of people around the world, there still exists a group of people that wear face masks incorrectly. In order to provide the best level of safety for everyone, face masks must be worn correctly, especially indoors, for example, in shops, cinemas and theaters. As security guards can only handle a limited area of the frequently visited objects, intelligent sensors can be used. In order to mount them on the shelves in the shops or near the cinema cash register queues, they need to be capable of battery operation. This restricts the sensor to be as energy-efficient as possible, in order to prolong the battery life of such devices. The cost is also a factor, as cheaper devices will result in higher accessibility. An interesting and quite novel approach that can answer all these challenges is a TinyML system, that can be defined as a combination of two concepts: Machine Learning (ML) and Internet of Things (IoT). The TinyML approach enables the usage of ML algorithms on boards equipped with low-cost, low-power microcontrollers without sacrificing the classifier quality. The main goal of this paper is to propose a battery-operated TinyML system that can be used for verification whether the face mask is worn properly. To this end, we carefully analyze several ML approaches to find the best method for the considered task. After detailed analysis of computation and memory complexity as well as after some preliminary experiments, we propose to apply the K-means algorithm with carefully designed filters and a sliding window technique, since this method provides high accuracy with the required energy-efficiency for the considered classification problem related to verification of using the face mask. The STM32F411 chip is selected as the best microcontroller for the considered task. Next, we perform wide experiments to verify the proposed ML framework implemented in the selected hardware platform. The obtained results show that the developed ML-system offers satisfactory performance in terms of high accuracy and lower power consumption. It should be underlined that the low-power aspect makes it possible to install the proposed system in places without the access to power, as well as reducing the carbon footprint of AI-focused industry which is not negligible. Our proposed TinyML system solution is able to deliver very high-quality metric values with accuracy, True Positive Ratio (TPR), True Negative Ratio (TNR), precision and recall being over 96% for masked face classification while being able to reach up to 145 days of uptime using a typical 18650 battery with capacity of 2500 mAh and nominal voltage of 3.7 V. The results are obtained using a STM32F411 microcontroller with 100 MHz ARM Cortex M4, which proves that execution of complex computer vision tasks is possible on such low-power devices. It should be noted that the STM32F411 microcontroller draws only 33 mW during operation.

Abstract:
Understanding how acting bridges the emotional bond between spectators and films is essential to depict how humans interact with this rapidly growing digital medium. In recent decades, the research community made promising progress in developing facial expression recognition (FER) methods. However, no emphasis has been put in cinematographic content, which is complex by nature due to the visual techniques used to convey the desired emotions. Our work represents a step towards emotion identification in cinema through facial expressions’ analysis. We presented a comprehensive overview of the most relevant datasets used for FER, highlighting problems caused by their heterogeneity and to the inexistence of a universal model of emotions. Built upon this understanding, we evaluated these datasets with a standard image classification models to analyze the feasibility of using facial expressions to determine the emotional charge of a film. To cope with the problem of lack of datasets for the scope under analysis, we demonstrated the feasibility of using a generic dataset for the training process and propose a new way to look at emotions by creating clusters of emotions based on the evidence obtained in the experiments.

The numerical study of relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) plays a crucial role in high-energy astrophysics but unfortunately is computationally demanding, given the complex physics involved (high Lorentz factor flows, extreme magnetization, and curved spacetimes near compact objects) and the large variety of spatial scales needed to resolve turbulent motions. A great benefit comes from the porting of existing codes running on standard processors to GPU-based platforms. However, this usually requires a drastic rewriting of the original code, the use of specific languages like CUDA, and a complex analysis of data management and optimization of parallel processes. Here, we describe the porting of the ECHO code for special and general relativistic MHD to accelerated devices, simply based on native Fortran language built-in constructs, especially do concurrent loops, few OpenACC directives, and straightforward data management provided by the Unified Memory option of NVIDIA compilers. Thanks to these very minor modifications to the original code, the new version of ECHO runs at least 16 times faster on GPU platforms as compared to CPU-based ones. The chosen benchmark is the 3D propagation of a relativistic MHD Alfvén wave, for which strong and weak scaling tests performed on the LEONARDO pre-exascale supercomputer at CINECA are provided (using up to 256 nodes corresponding to 1024 GPUs, and over 14 billion cells). Finally, an example of high-resolution relativistic MHD Alfvénic turbulence simulation is shown, demonstrating the potential for astrophysical plasmas of the new GPU-based version of ECHO.

Em ano de lembrança e luta dos 50 anos do AI-5 buscamos nesta pesquisa discutir o filme Terra em Transe, como obra central do período do Cinema Novo, que cumpriu e cumpre um papel revelador do período militar, caracterizado pelo estado de exceção e, principalmente, seguindo o pensamento de Giorgio Agamben, pela permanência do estado de exceção em meio ao estado democrático de direito.

Abstract:
Este artigo oferece um estudo do filme Aquarius(AQUARIUS, 2016), de Kleber Mendonça Filho, em comparação com Terra em Transe(TERRA, 1967), de Glauber Rocha. O interesse em analisar os dois filmes de forma comparativa decorre da recepção polêmica que Aquariusrecebeu quando seu diretor e elenco utilizaram o lançamento internacional, no Festival de Cannes em 2016, para protestar publicamente contra o impeachment da presidente Dilma Rousseff, interpretado como golpe brando. Terra em Transe (TERRA, 1967), por outro lado, é um filme canônico do cinema brasileiro, considerado uma alegoria de outro golpe, o duro golpe militar de 1964. Devido aos contextos políticos de ambos os filmes, perguntarei se eles podem ser entendidos como diagnósticos do Brasil e, se este for o caso, como estes diagnósticos são desenvolvidos e se podem ser interpretados como potencial emancipatório. Minhas análises, e a comparação, serão guiadas pela definição antropológica de filme de ficção do filósofo alemão Martin Seel. Ele entende a mídia como aquela forma de arte que mais fortemente é capaz de mover-nos emocionalmente para eventualmente mover-nos intelectualmente. Ao aliar a definição da política do filósofo francês Jacques Rancière, argumentarei que isso pode desdobrar-se também, mas não necessariamente, em fazer-nos agir. Discutirei, portanto, o potencial de Aquarius (AQUARIUS, 2016)e de Terra em Transe(TERRA, 1967) em mover-nos e fazer-nos mover, no sentido de nos fazer compreender a estrutura sociopolítica do Brasil para atuar, eventualmente, nela.
