Full textThe blending of cultures has grown exponentially since the late 1980s. This phenomenon, which confirms the transition from modernity to postmodernity, affects the literary field and precipitates the collapse of the modern and national model of literature. It is then necessary to rethink the literary field, its history and its boundaries, and to forsake three notions that characterized it: essentialism, modernocentrism, and the arbitrary exclusion of whole areas of literature. This thesis participates in this effort through the exploration of European literary and cultural transfers in Japan, in archaic times and in the Heisei era (1989-2019). After a first observation of our present context, it revisits the archaic transfers between Europe and Japan, in order to undermine the foundations of modernocentrisme and essentialism, and to rethink the chronology and the evolution of transcultural exchanges between these two cultural eras. A third step consists of the study of Japanese mangaesque literature and its neomedieval imaginary; in particular, two key titles of this trend are analysed: Vinland Saga and Spice & Wolf. This transcultural and transtextual facet of contemporary literary creation illustrates the importance of extending the boundaries and defining criteria of literature. It also reflects the growing place of Japan on the literary chessboard and the role of the European Middle Ages in the re-enchantment of the world, of which postmodernity is the vector
Otsuji, Emi. "Performing transculturation : between/within 'Japanese' and 'Australian' language, identities and culture /." Electronic version, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/598.
Full textThis thesis examines the construction processes of language, culture and identities in relation to both the macro level of society and culture, as well as the micro-individual level. It argues that there is a need to understand these constructions beyond discrete notions of language, identities and culture. The thesis mobilises performativity theory to explore how exposure to a variety of practices during the life trajectory has an impact on the construction and performance of language, identities and culture. It shows how a theory of performativity can provide a comprehensive account of the complex process of, and the relationships between, hybridisation (engagement in a range of cultural practices) and monolithication (nostalgic attachments to familiar practices). The thesis also suggests that the deployment of performativity theory with a focus on individual biography as well as larger social-cultural factors may fill a gap left in some other modes of analysis such as Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Conversation Analysis (CA). Analysing data from four workplaces in Australia, the study focuses on trans-institutional talk, namely casual conversation in which people from a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds work together. Following the suggestion (Pennycook 2003; Luke 2002) that there is a need to shift away from the understanding that a particular language is attached to a particular nation, territory and ethnicity, the thesis shows how discrete ethnic and linguistic labels such as ‘Japanese’ and ‘English’ as well as notions of ‘code-switching’ and ‘bi-lingualism’ become problematic in the attempt to grasp the complexity of contemporary transcultural workplaces. The thesis also explores the potential agency of subjects at the convergence of various discourses through iterative linguistic and cultural performances. In summary, the thesis provides deeper insight into transcultural performances to show the links between idiosyncratic individual performances and the construction of transcultural linguistic, cultural phenomena within globalisation.
Moïse, Myriam. "African Caribbean Women Writers in Canada and the USA : can the Diaspora Speak?" Thesis, Paris 3, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA030086.
Full textThis dissertation examines the specific discourse produced by diasporic African Caribbean women writers in Canada and the USA, namely Edwidge Danticat, Nalo Hopkinson, Jamaica Kincaid, Paule Marshall, M. NourbeSe Philip, and Olive Senior. These authors’ ambivalent positions as both cultural insiders and outsiders are conveyed through their prose and poetry, in which they reclaim their histories, bodies and tongues. The thesis highlights discourse operations in demonstrating that the selected authors articulate new forms of subjectivity, hence proving that cultural identities do not depend on static territories but rather on mobile and even volatile cultural spaces. Besides reconstructing the past through a discourse that truly unsettles hegemonic versions of history, African Caribbean diasporic women writers represent their bodies beyond materiality and choose to embrace their cultural schizophrenia. Their projects consist in un-silencing the unruly selves through the creation of embodied polyphonies, multiple counter-voices and anti-conformist utterances. The discursive constructions of the self therefore occur outside of canonical terminology, as these women writers resist single-voiced discourse and favour heteroglossic rhetorics. Ultimately, this comparative literary analysis is innovative as it proves that diasporic memories, tongues and identities are interlinked, and that beyond their respective agendas and personal discursive strategies, these authors are limbo writers who, like limbo dancers, transform instability into a recreative and artistic experience. They inscribe their self-representations into a powerful dialectic of movement, fluidity, plurality and hybridity, and truly demonstrate that the feminine Caribbean diaspora can speak
Régnier, Alain. "Word use : literary art and political intent in Quebec and Canada : the question of race and ethnicity."

Full textThe subject doesn't exist apart from its relation to culture and society nor frome the language that constructs it. The transcultural passage can deprive the subject of his place within the mother-tongue, and he finds himself inevitably foreign, in search of a modality of existence. The passage touches the very foundations of the identifications and can confront the subject to a rocking between the anguish of disappearance and the liberty due to an illusion of the freedoom from castration. However, an abruption in the relation of the subject to the Other does not eliminate the questions about his sexual being : on the contrary, the out-of-norm of their position is susceptible to reactivate them. Everyone knows the famous aphorism of Simone de Beauvoir : « One is not born, bay rather becomes, a woman ». This observation echoes the position of Sigmund Freud who questions himself until the end of his life on what the woman wants. The first to question the innate norms of sex, he demonstrates, with the aid of the Oedipus complex, the paths that the subject takes as a social being to become a man or a woman. In this thesis, we examine the paths that find some women taken in the issue of women's becoming in the context of a transcultural passage. All of them are the first-generation Russian-speaking migrants

Full textThe aging of the Tunisian population during the so called TrenteGlorieuses in France is not spared by Alzheimer phenomenon at a time when the disease has an intense stigma and popularization as much in western societies as in developing countries . With reference to the work of M. Peruchon, G. Le Gouès or A.-M. Gardey highlight of the dementia involution in addition to the achievement of benchmarks and identity limits are all addressed in a transcultural approach. The analysis of psychic functioning of ten Tunisians living in France compared with ten Tunisians living in Tunisia, all over the age of sixty years and suffering from the dementia so called Alzheimer's is suggested with protocols coming from the Thematic Apperception Test. While the representational ‘scooping out’ does not differ from one population to another, the study has highlighted a modification of a self-representation more pronounced in the group of immigrant subjects. The migration phase seems also to strengthen the research of archaic object relationship where the impulses of attachment and grasping have an important role. In between travel and colonization, the joint-culture is presented here in a job that speaks in favour of a relativism of universal data carried out by the biomedical world. Understand cultural representations so mentioned aims to provide us with elements for an appropriate care of our seniors overwhelmed by the effects of belonging to a socio-cultural minority whose identity is often defined by the loss and neurodegenerative deficit

Full textAny piece of writing in the trans-cultural is inevitably conducive to questionings related to matters of identity and various belongings, taking this stand towards the flows of multiculturalism – concerning Hedi Bouraoui in any case. The shift from multi to trans brings about some thematic variations around the questions of cultural transactions and the boundaries of the imaginary. The analysis of scriptural writings practiced in fiction is bound to reveal to us the functioning of a writing that escapes the categorisations of the in-between. Writing would be this specific language where the trans-cultural, cross-border and interstitial quest is articulated

Full textThis dissertation consists of readings of four selected films by Ang Lee — Pushing Hands, The Wedding Banquet, Brokeback Mountain and Hulk, ranging over a decade from 1992 to 2005. It explores Lee’s representation of diverse Chinese and American masculinities, discussing negotiations of masculinities in transcultural spaces. My exploration of Lee’s representation of men and masculinities is equipped with double epistemological perspectives, namely, both Chinese and Western. My project is both conceptual and analytical. On the conceptual level, I intend to demonstrate how constructions of masculinities can be more productively explained by employing not only the Western conceptual arguments of transcultural space (transdifference) but also by reading this space from different epistemological perspectives, namely the Western and Chinese. On the analytical level, I employ audio and visual textual analysis in my examination of Lee’s portrayal of male figures. My analysis has clearly demonstrated the complexity and multiplicity in negotiations of masculinities in transcultural spaces, which can be both emancipatory and repressive in re-constructing and re-negotiating one’s masculinity. Male subjectivities in Lee’s films turn to three different ways to construct or reconstruct their manliness. First, men suppress trandifference and opt for a clear belonging to a certain culture, in particular, the culture of origin for masculinity restoration. Second, men embrace transidifference to construct an ambiguous masculine identity in transcultural spaces. Third, men might transcend cultural boundaries to demonstrate transcultural manhood.

Full textWe present a multimodal, contrastive and transcultural approach of the gesture space of French speaking area and Spanish-speaking area. We describe and analyse the gesture space on the one hand and on the other hand, the function of gesture, eyes directions and prosody in reformulation examples in French-speaking area and Spanish-speaking area.In each French or Spanish speaking area, we compare gesture space and reformulation in three different cultural areas : in French-speaking area, we compare the gesture space of French speakers of Metropolitan France, (Europe), Quebec speakers, (North America), Cajun speakers in Louisiana (North America) and in Spanish-speaking area, we compare the gesture space of Spanish speakers from Spain (Europe), speakers from Argentina (South America), speakers from Venezuela (South America). We analyse the differences and/or the similarities amongst speakers with a common language, either French or Spanish, but a different cultural environment. We decided to study gesture space and reformulation and recorded from a television corpus. Therefore, with this corpus,we can analyse gesture space speakers refering to the diagram “Division of the gesture space for transcription purposes” from Pedelty, which is presented in D. Mc Neill (1992). This diagram allows us to obtain a double reading of gesture space : on the vertical axis (trunk, head, beyondhead), on the horizontal axis (close to the body and far from the body). Afterwards, we analyse the function of gesture and eyes directions and their relationship with the intonative variations during the reformulation process in an oral interview. We analyse the functionof gesture amplitude and the function of catchments and growthpoints, studied by D. Mc Neill andM.A. Morel and their relationship with the function of eyes directions and the fundamentalfrequency (F0) variability with different examples of reformulation in the oral speech. Thereforewe analyse how these three modalities seem to have a double function to help the construction ofthe own speech and/or to help the intercomprehension, the mutual understanding in the coenunciativeprocess

This research proposes a digital educational game focused on the learning of Japanese kanji. Its fundamentals are culturally based in the Japanese immigration to Brazil and, combined with the concepts and theories of transculturalism and topophilia, lead to a reflection of cultural appreciation and its hybridization. Such approaches fall within the overall context of combinations and adaptations, covering digital productions structured in accordance to concepts and theories from several areas of knowledge. The methodology is to conceive a game based on the difficulties of learning the Japanese language identified in students of non‐Japanese origin and provided by studies from other authors. It is also based on educational, psychological, philosophical and entertainment methodological assumptions organizing themselves in a position to produce an educational game, entertaining above all, that suits the needs of this generation used to challenges and reward systems. Based on such studies, some of the games found on the Internet and in the market were analyzed. It is discussed the transposition among medias, with an approach of the new media, focusing on the indication of the gaming platforms, according to the content. The process of designing and producing the game is optimized by the association of ideas and creation of an structured and elaborate game design documentation. The project creation is guided by the work process flow of a game, in which are demonstrated the steps and interactions between the teams involved in that production. The procedural and technical problems of the participants are reported by the teaching experience in the classroom, better placing and clarifying the title of this research

Full textIn 2013, France and Germany are celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Élysée Treaty. This bilateral treaty, signed on 22 January 1963 by the President of the French Republic Charles de Gaulle and the German Chancellor Conrad Adenauer, sealed an exceptional partnership between France and Germany in the field of education. Following the treaty in 1969, the first bilingual French-German classes were established in German and French high schools. The students had to improve their knowledge of the French or German language in order to create new elite for a common Europe built as a third power in the context of the Cold War. The concept of Content and Language Integrated Learning (= CLIL) spread rapidly from the 1990s onwards following the Maastricht contract. Today, it is highly valued in the context of European language policy in order to promote "multilingualism". In France, the international sections were set up in 1981 and the European sections in 1992. France and Germany were the first to create a double diploma, the "AbiBac", created in 1994, enables the students to pass the German and the French Secondary School examination simultaneously. The priority is to develop intercultural skills through the reciprocal knowledge of the two cultures. The thesis aims at a comparison and evaluation of the didactic added value of bilingual education in France and Germany and deals the following questions: To what extent does bilingual teaching add value to the student's historical knowledge and skills? Can we observe an acquisition of a Franco-German and/or European competence? For this, we use the German concept of "historical consciousness" ("Geschichtsbewusstsein") as a heuristic instrument and place it in a European perspective. In the first part of this thesis, we present the development of this cooperation in the historical and cultural context of the Franco-German cooperation. The second part deals with the daily teaching practice and die the cross cultural potential of history teaching as CLIL. Thus, we note that bilingual education enables young people to orient themselves in European contexts by using their specific historical knowledge and skills acquired in school, provided that the education is based on close cooperation between the actors of the two countries. The interdisciplinary and intercultural approach of this project, the association of university research and practical experience in High-schools are the keys of this thesis

Aim The purpose of this literature study was to describe nurses’ experiences of encounters with patients from different cultural backgrounds than their own, and to describe the opportunities and barriers that nurses’ face when caring for these patients.
Method Twelve qualitative studies from different countries were included in this literature study, in which researchers interviewed nurses and presented their problems and experiences. Our study was analyzed by using a qualitative approach.
Findings The study revealed four phenomena that nurses face when caring for patients from different cultural backgrounds; the communication with the patient, encounters with family/relatives, nurses’ experiences of working conditions in cultural encounters and cultural nursing knowledge.
Conclusion Nurses felt that communication was the biggest main obstacle in meetings with patients with different cultural backgrounds. Interpreter, colleagues and relatives were seen as opportunities to avoid the obstacles that arise. Family in patients with different cultural background was very important in nursing care of these patients. Nurses saw education as an opportunity to increase their cultural knowledge and believe that access to an interpreter would facilitate health care.

Full textThe dragon is the national symbol of China and the rooster is of France. The dragon is an imagined animal; the rooster is a real. They are different from other symbols such as Germanic eagle who evokes strength and authority at the first sight. Why the dragon and the rooster could have been served as a country’s symbol: what characteristics do they have? what conditions have they fulfilled in the history to win this place? We try to answer the questions with three parts. The part I studies the two symbols’ presence in daily life. We find that a frequent presence produces a familiarity that allows all social communities to identify the appearance. The part II is on the iconography and aesthetics. The morphological evolutions of the two symbols reveal that their image combines the human and the animal. We discover that the two symbols present common schemas: strength, privilege, power, etc. Nevertheless, their image is obtained in a different way. The frontal dragon is in connection with the emperor, the rooster with an image of knight and hero. The part III focuses on the literature, discusses the nomination and the role. The study on the nomination reveals that the two animals’ name and appellation confirm the identified schemas of leader, emperor and elite, which allow the literary character, dragon or rooster, to manifest their authority of emperor (king), civilizing hero or mythical ancestor. These similarities bring their image closer to the national symbol. Besides the homogeneous aspects, we find a heterogeneity in the construction of the two symbols’ image on the ideal personality of the two countries: the emperor for the Chinese and the hero for the Frenchmen

Full textThis thesis deals with the topic of reception studies on the one hand and works on the role of the media in the emancipation of minorities on the other hand. Cultural studies which conceive the uses of the media as spaces From a theoretical point of view, I have made a review of the main works on reception, with particular attention given to the notion of decoding and the construction of identity. The empirical approach led me to treat sub Saharan immigrants and their descendants in the Parisian suburbs involved in a transcultural process of self-construction. I notably relied on their life stories to observe their complex relationship with the mass media. In general, the image of the immigrants and their descendants reflected in the media includes a strong negative connotation which is, consequently, harmful to their expression as citizens. Expectations of a better ethnic representativeness are strong, and, lacking an alliance with the media in these expectations, the Internet and the social media seem to constitute today a relevant alternative. The Internet is a more useful tool for them in terms of information, solutions of visibility and is especially an interactivity which makes them active receptors. The story of these existential trajectories calls out to society in general and the media in particular on the necessity of accompanying the construction of identities in an ever-changing world

Crossing languages, borders and cultures, they erected, through their productions, singular bridges that illustrate the challenges of globalization. Focused on novels, poetry, passing by theater, the purpose of this research is to advance a typology of this emerging literary field. Encompassing the twenty-four authors composing it, including François Cheng, Gao Xingjian, Dai Sijie, or Ying Chen, the study is based on a referent-concept: the authors’ transidentity. For a better understanding of complexity and diversity of productions, transdisciplinarity – sociological, literary, and linguistic approaches – is instructive. By the prism of cultural identity, the internal study of works is divided into two components: intercultural representations and transcultural (of cross-cultural) poetic. With a constant comparison between works of each author, and between the authors, we figure out recurring characteristics and operate classifications. This allows to question the status of the field in the so-called "Francophone" literature and to raise the issue of the label. Thus through Chinese authors, it is any peripheral writer theoretical status in the francophone space that we are trying to explore and enlighten

This allows to question the status of the field in the so-called "Francophone" literature and to raise the issue of the label. Thus through Chinese authors, it is any peripheral writer theoretical status in the francophone space that we are trying to explore and enlighten.

The inadequacy of the present society model to prospect viable solutions to terrorist drifts, concentration of wealth, environmental degradation, socio-economic imbalances between North and South, problems of multicultural coexistence and degeneration of the world of politics invoke the need for a new paradigm able to restructure, in their deepest roots, our relational collective schemes regarding to reality. Although in recent years there have been a lot of voices calling for ethical change of our coexistence models, the expected paradigmatic transformation can be attained only through a new way of conceiving the relation between classical dualist oppositions: West vs. Islam, reason vs. irrationality, science vs. religion, etc. In this study we propose a new approach to reality, a contradictorial logic able to host in itself the Holy through a new scientific rigor, and therefore open with renewed eyes to religious traditions. Starting from a profound and critical study of S. Lupasco's philosophy, we try to carry out – with the contribution of A. N. Whitehead's and R. Panikkar's thought – the elaboration of what we call a "musical logomitica" (a development of a L. Duch's neologism): a philosophical, epistemological and ontological interpretation of reality capable of hosting the holy dimension as a triple a-logical experience claiming a key role also in the domain of hard sciences (quantum physics, cosmology and biology): the timber, rhythm and melody experience of Being. This experiential perspective also allows us to define a new approach to religions, many of which are taken into account in this study looking for a definition of a new transcultural philosophical model. We ended up with a contradictorial hermeneutic exercise aimed at discovering a symphonic articulation between monotheisms and outline, thus, the traits of a possible transcultural renaissance that might take place in the Mediterranean world.

The study aimed to translate and culturally adapt to the Portuguese language in the context of Brazil the Intermittent Self-Catheterization Questionnaire. The type of this study was methodological and followed the translation procedures and transcultural adaptation, which comprises five phases, namely: initial translation, translation synthesis, translation back to the original language, review by expert committee, and translated version of the pre-test. The study participants were five translators and five judges in accordance with specific criteria in the methodological reference. The pre-test was conducted with thirty people with spinal cordy injury at home, randomly recruited from an existing database, in the months of Ausgust and September 2014, by means of two instruments: characterization form sociodemographic and clinical, and implementation of the Intermittent Self-Catheterization Questionnaire â translated version. After the the transcultural adaptation was held Content Validation Index, with 17 experts in the area of spinal cord injury and / or intermittent catheterization. The analysis of data translation and the transcultural adaptation is presented in tabular form with the descriptive analysis. The sÃciodemographic data of the pre-test were compiled and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 19.0, presented in table form, and the descriptive analysis. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of CearÃ, with the report number 562 693. The results show that in the first two versions, translation 1 and 2, there were no significant differences between translations. In Translation synthesis was contemplated most of the translation of item 2.In the Step Back Translation, the translation did not show much disparity of the original questionnaire, except some English terms, but nothing that would change the context of each item. In step of the committee of judges for review was a meeting in order to evaluate semantic, idiomatic, experimental and conceptual of each questionnaire item, to display all the inconsistencies of previous translations. Some items changes, and thus obtained the pre-final version of Intermittent Self-Catheterization Questionnaire -Version translated and then applied to the pre-test. The Content Validation Index was 0.92 and the individual values of items ranging from 0.29 to 1. Three items obtained an IVC lower than the recommended, however the total instrument was considered valid in the content. It follows, therefore, that the translated version of Intermittent Self-Catheterization Questionnaire proved to be a reliable, clear and understandable instrument among the items which can evaluate the quality of life of people with spinal cord injury who perform the catheterization. Allows nurses know the problems related to intermittent catheterization and encourage the patient to promote their health, making it a person with more independence and control of your situation, besides being more one contribution to the knowledge of nursing.

Full textThis study had the following objectives: to understand the interaction processes among health professionals and foreign users in the Unidades Básicas de Saúde (UBS) and the Program for Family Health (PSF); to get to know the significance of the health professionals experience as they interact with foreign users; to put in evidence bioetiques issues in the experience of professionals and foreign users interaction. It was used as a theorical referential the Symbolic Interacionism and as methodological reference a Grounded Theory up to an axial coding. Data analysis presented as conceptual ordering, lead to the definition of four great issues: (1) trying to communicate; (2) detecting limits; (3) recognizing interaction as a process; (4) recognizing different perspectives. The route of professional foreign users interaction was developed from one choice: attend everyone (indiscriminately) making approximation possible. To recognize or fail to recognize in the foreign user the dignity of human person seems to be the determining factor for the openness of the professional to the interaction, in his disposition to seek strategies.

Full textThis dissertation examines the cultural work done by French Caribbean women's theatre of the 1980s and 1990s. Through a focus on traumatic memories of slavery, l study three French Caribbean women dramatists, investigating three noteworthy plays and the staging and reception of those plays at Ubu Repertory Theater of New York. The study begins with a theoretical introduction, followed by a second chapter on slavery and its remembrance in metropolitan France and the overseas departments. The three central chapters investigate the theatres of Ina Césaire, Maryse Condé, and Gerty Dambury, as well as the production and reception of their plays at Ubu. In a first section of each chapter, l deploy textual analysis to illuminate how the plays portray links between the past and the present in order to establish and transform French Caribbean women's memory of slavery, which was largely unconscious and secret at the end of the twentieth century. In a second part of each chapter, l investigate the translation of trauma realized by Ubu artists and spectators and the conflicts generated by transcultural performances of French Caribbean women's trauma

Full textWhen the West Indies are really visible in the news when literature is concerned, the writers from the Indian Ocean are much more unassuming. This can be explained by the political situation of those islands. While Guadeloupe and Martinique are French territories, Mauritius, being a sovereign country does not benefit from the same influence. Moreover, Edouard Glissant, distinguished theoretician, has done a lot for the Caribbean Islands, which give them a fame towards which Daniel Maximum has a special and personal position. While the Martinique writer recall a society in permanent gestation, his Guadeloupian counterpart will claim for a culture and identity capture in a positive process. The fact that he is posted to the Negro African cultures of North America and to Jazz does not exclude the link with mother Africa, where they come from, as slaves. On the other hand, Eduard Jean Maunick and Khal Torabully, poets and theoreticians of independent Mauritius, are keener to be posted to the sub-Saharan authors. However, none of those minimize the role of the environment by which they express an imagination specific to Islands. Even though History has confirmed an identity, the immediate environment has also been very determining to figure out the origin of a “Géosymbolique”. It urges on developing a “géocritical” and multidisciplinary approach. In so doing, having at these four different authors between the West Indies and the Indian Ocean, brings into focus a culture and an imaginary which these literatures are about. These Literature “de la periphérie” free themselves from atavism, liberating themselves from the French influence, and get enrolled in their own cultural impact

Full textThis is a qualitative study, characterized as being a mini-ethnography according to Leininger (1998), that aims to know the cultural questions of the childbirth event in a German descendent cultural group that lives in Rio Grande do Sul, this group named in this study teuto-gaúcho. The study is conducted in a city of the rural area of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, colonized by Germans, that maintain traditions and customs of their antecessors. The informants are 18 women that always lived in this town, who are mothers and practice the Lutheran religion. The data was collected through observation, semi-structured interviews and bibliographic material. The interviews were submitted to the Thematic and Pattern Analyses suggested by Leininger (1998). The emerged themes were pregnancy and childbirth as taboos, the appraisal of maternity, transformations in childbirth practices, the traditions of care, and the domestic work. The studies about some cultures allow us to know specific groups and, in this way, to care for them in more appropriate manners, the main goal of Nursing.
