Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis, starting from the now-defunct Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), analyses the main economic and political developments in the Asia-Pacific region, with a focus on a selection of the main actors in the Asia-Pacific: China, the US, Japan, Australia and ASEAN. The US, once the main proponent of the TPP as a way to counterbalance China and then the one that effectively killed it, is dealing with the Trump presidency and seems to lack an overall strategy. China, living through an economic miracle after the lost decades in the nineteenth and twentieth century, wants to achieve its full potential and assert its power in the region. Japan is caught in the middle: suffering from economic stagnation and torn between nationalistic ambitions and American military dependency. Australia finds itself economically linked to China but diplomatically is a long-term US ally. ASEAN, on the other hand, is testing the limits of cooperation and respect of sovereignty. The interplay between all these factors and actors will determine who will be “writing the rules” in a region that shows a lot of economic and political dynamism.

The presence of strong interactions in quantum many-body systems makes the analytical treatment of such systems very difficult. In this thesis we explore two possible proposals for simulating strongly correlated, quantum many-body systems: quantum simulations using trapped-ion quantum computers, and optical lattice simulators. In the first part of the thesis we describe the recent advances in Quantum Information Processing. In particular, we focus on the trapped-ion quantum computer. One of the main experimental roadblocks for this architecture is the "anomalous heating". This refers to the motional heating of the ion after being cooled to its ground state. In this thesis we present the first ab-initio and microscopic model for this noise. This model attributes the noise to fluctuating dipoles formed by adsorbates bound on the trap surface. The second part of the thesis studies three different lattice boson systems. First, we study the Bose-Hubbard model for hard-core bosons, interacting via dipole-dipole interactions. The resulting extended Bose-Hubbard model can be experimentally realized by polar molecules, Rydberg atoms, or magnetic dipoles in optical lattices. We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations, using the two-worm algorithm to study the ground-state phase diagram of dipolar, hard-core bosons, trapped in a bilayer geometry. Each layer is a quasi two-dimensional lattice, the dipole are aligned perpendicular to the layer, and inter-layer hopping is suppressed. We present zero- and finite-temperature results. Next we use a novel multiworm algorithm, along with bosonization, to study the ground-state phase diagram of bosons trapped in a stack of one-dimensional tubes. We study two different inter-particle interactions. First, we consider nearest-neighbor attractive interactions between the layers, and set the intra-layer interactions to zero. Next we study dipolar bosons with their dipole moments aligned perpendicular to the tube axis. Inter-layer tunneling is suppressed in both cases. Finally, we explore the possibility of using few-body phenomena to create exotic quantum many-body systems. We present a novel scheme to realize a tunable, onsite, three-body interaction. We study the resulting extended Bose-Hubbard model with a three-body on-site term using the Gutzwiller mean-field method, as well as quantum Monte Carlo simulations using the Worm algorithm.

Panelli, Martina. Thesis, Paris 8, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA080086/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This work aims to study the coincidence between two phenomenons, subjective writing and found footage film, articulating different approaches around themes as filmic self-portrait and subjective writing, gender identity representation, the history and the critique of avant-garde film. Through the link between the notions of réécriture filmique (Marie-Claire Ropars) and entre-images (Raymond Bellour), this thesis problematise one of the main topic of self-portraiture practice: the resemblance bond between the referent and the object of representation. The analysis of “second hand” films – realized in the frame of woman's avant-garde cinema since the eighties – allowed me to articulate this theoretical reflexion in the light of recent debates around found footage film. Following the researches of Christa Blümlinger, I focused notably on the practice of reusing archive films as a form of analysis, critic, and reevaluation of cinema as a dispositif. Secondly, according to Judith Butler, I interpreted repetition as a strategy to discuss and dismantling the underlying mechanisms of gender identity representations. Finally, putting a specific emphasis on the physical and material nature of the work analysed, I highlighted a precise relationship between the material body of the filmic archive and the natural body of the artists. In this sense, the bio-political context of post and trans-feminist self-representation practices permitted me to conceive the natural body as both a surface and a medium of rewriting, shaping and determining an intermediate subjectivity which is linked “fleshly” to technologies as well as it is “freed” from the flesh of the image

Abstract:
The current approach to managing the distal pancreas after pancreaticoduodenectomy is to anastomose the stump to either the jejunum or the stomach. However, occlusion of the main pancreatic duct (usually sutured, ligated or glued), remains an option in certain circumstances, even if it does involve a greater risk of pancreatic fistula. Recent studies suggest that distal pancreatic transection by radiofrequency-assisted transection (RFAT) devices can seal the main pancreatic duct easily and safely. The goal of this thesis was to elucidate whether the RFAT of the main pancreatic duct may avoid the risk of both necrotizing pancreatitis and postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) formation. Using murine and porcine experimental models, we performed a transection of the neck of the pancreas by RFAT without pancreatic anastomosis in both species. Thirty-two rats were subjected to the procedure and were killed at 3, 7, 15 and 21 days. Two additional control groups; sham operation (n=3) and user manipulation only (n=4) of 15 days of postoperative period (PO) were considered. On the porcine model, thirteen animals were subjected to the same procedure and killed at 1 and 6 months, and 11 pancreatic specimens were used such as histological controls. Histologically, both models showed a rapid atrophy of the distal pancreas by apoptosis with no signs of necrotizing pancreatitis. The atrophic pattern of the distal pancreas was characterized by acinar-ductal metaplasia which was replaced by fibrotic and adipose tissue at long PO period (6 month in the porcine model). The insulin area increased over the PO in both proximal and distal pancreas, though we identified a significant increase of clusters of ß-cells in the distal pancreas in both species after the transection. The proximal pancreas was totally preserved at all time of the PO. As a general finding, we observed biochemically a significant increase in serum amylase levels on the immediate PO which return to baseline levels in the following weeks. Two biochemical grade A POPF and a pseudocyst were diagnosed in the porcine model, while any POPF was observed in the murine model. Overall, our results show that the RFAT of the neck of the pancreas achieved and efficient sealing of the stump of the pancreas and led to the complete exocrine atrophy of the distal remnant pancreas without leading necrotizing pancreatitis. This technic could be considered as an alternative in difficult circumstances where anastomosis of the distal pancreatic stump is believed to be unwise.

Brownstein, David. "Sunday walks and seed traps : the many natural histories of British Columbia forest conservation, 1890-1925." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/18423.

Full text
Abstract:
British Columbia amateur natural historians were among the most vocal advocates of scientific forest conservation at the turn of the twentieth century. They were uniquely positioned to document the environmental changes that their colonial society had brought to the province and their observations enlivened them to petition government to control these changes. In response to the appeals of such individuals as James Robert Anderson (1841-1930), John Davidson (1878-1970), and Chartres Cecil Pemberton (1864-1945), government embraced the empirical theories of Prussian Forstwissenschaft. However, the forest botany that complemented these forest mensuration techniques (and necessary to implement sustained-yield forestry) did not survive the trip from Europe intact. Upon creation of the B.C. Forest Branch in 1912, staff adopted natural history techniques to make sense of, and then manage, the provincial forests under its control. The natural historians and the foresters were thus joined by the causeway of ecology as it was then emerging in North America. It was over this ecological bridge that traffic flowed back and forth between the old scientific culture of the natural historians and the new North American forestry. The Branch initially pursued a brand of egalitarian science whereby each and every employee was responsible for compiling policy-relevant sample-plot observations. A lack of trust between headquarters and those in the field changed this strategy and gave rise to a different geography of expertise, with the consequence that the original structure of scientific interaction became obstructed from historical view. By jettisoning the idea that the science that underpinned early forest management was solely an homogenous uptake of European Forstwissenschaft, we allow for different (and often competing) scientific cultures to exist at the same time and in the same place. We can also better understand the naturalists’ influence upon and their eventual marginalization by the Forest Branch and its nascent philosophy of sustained-yield. The thesis explores each of these themes by way of chapters on scientific culture in British Columbia; three quite different botanists; and research as practised by the British Columbia Forest Branch.

Santos, Ângelo Emanuel Neves dos. "Design and simulation of a smart bottle with fill-level sensing based on oxide TFT technology." Master's thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/19593.

Full text
Abstract:
Packaging is an important element responsible for brand growth and one of the main rea-sons for producers to gain competitive advantages through technological innovation. In this re-gard, the aim of this work is to design a fully autonomous electronic system for a smart bottle packaging, being integrated in a European project named ROLL-OUT. The desired application for the smart bottle is to act as a fill-level sensor system in order to determine the liquid content level that exists inside an opaque bottle, so the consumer can exactly know the remaining quantity of the product inside. An in-house amorphous indium–gallium–zinc oxide thin-film transistor (a-IGZO TFT) model, previously developed, was used for circuit designing purposes. This model was based in an artificial neural network (ANN) equivalent circuit approach. Taking into account that only n-type oxide TFTs were used, plenty of electronic building-blocks have been designed: clock generator, non-overlapping phase generator, a capacitance-to-voltage converter and a comparator. As it was demonstrated by electrical simulations, it has been achieved good functionality for each block, having a final system with a power dissipation of 2.3 mW (VDD=10 V) not considering the clock generator. Four printed circuit boards (PCBs) have been also designed in order to help in the testing phase. Mask layouts were already designed and are currently in fabrication, foreseeing a suc-cessful circuit fabrication, and a major step towards the design and integration of complex trans-ducer systems using oxide TFTs technology.
