Abstract:
This essay discusses the complex relations between feminist theory and trans and intersex theory and politics. It charts the emergence of a “beyond-the binary” model of oppression that frames trans and intersex oppression in terms of a hostile binary—a binary that forces out anything in-between the categories male/man and female/woman. This chapter shows how this model has unfortunately resulted in political impasse, particularly in articulating a feminism that sees trans and intersex oppression as intersecting with sexist oppression. The chapter excavates and interrogates the roots of this model in, for example, the responses of Sandy Stone and Kate Bornstein to the transphobic feminism of Janice Raymond, and provides an alternative way of conceptualizing trans and intersex oppression more congenial to an intersectional framework. It proceeds by taking seriously a specific form of transphobic sexual violation, namely, “reality enforcement.”

Martínez, Juliana, and Salvador Vidal-Ortiz, eds. Travar el saber. Editorial de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata (EDULP), 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.35537/10915/73755.

Full text
Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
To many, the idea that light can be used to hold and manipulate matter is probably quite foreign. The photon is a seemingly evanescent particle; its interactions with matter are weak. But while it has no rest mass, a photon carries momentum. Optical traps have become important tools used to measure forces on nanometer to micrometer length scale. Laser tweezers can be used to drive (or hold) microrheological probes. Optical trapping forces are reviewed and optical trap designs discussed, incluing the use of fixed and moving reference frame optical traps. Proper calibration of optical traps especially in the material under test is discussed. Linear and non-linear measurements using laser tweezers are presented, including shear thinning of colloidal dispersions when probes are translated through a suspension. The operating regime of laser tweezer microrheology is presented.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the major historical themes embedded within the familiar narrative of American expansion framed by the end of the War of 1812 and the 1890 massacre at Wounded Knee. The chapter tracks Native responses to and the impacts of the US effort to clear the trans-Mississippi West of its Native population. It also addresses the realities of the violence that engulfed the American West during and after the Civil War, even as it describes the inter-Indian diplomatic networks, fur trade frameworks, and legislation that enabled Native people to survive the onslaught. The chapter goes beyond warriors and warfare to examine the manner in which American Indians struggled to endure legal, political, and cultural assaults conducted via missionary activity, boarding schools, and allotment.

Howells, Coral Ann, Paul Sharrad, and Gerry Turcotte, eds. The Oxford History of the Novel in English. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199679775.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book explores the history of English-language prose fiction in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the South Pacific since 1950, focusing not only on the ‘literary’ novel, but also on the processes of production, distribution and reception, and on popular fiction and the fictional sub-genres, as well as the work of major novelists, movements, and tendencies. After World War II, the rise of cultural nationalism in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand and movements towards independence in the Pacific islands, together with the turn toward multiculturalism and transnationalism in the postcolonial world, called into question the standard national frames for literary history. This resulted in an increasing recognition of formerly marginalised peoples and a repositioning of these national literatures in a world literary context. The book explores the implications of such radical change through its focus on the English-language novel and the short story, which model the crises in evolving narratives of nationhood and the reinvention of postcolonial identities. Shifting socio-political and cultural contexts and their effects on novels and novelists, together with shifts in fictional modes (realism, modernism, the Gothic, postmodernism) are traced across these different regions. Attention is given not only to major authors but also to Indigenous and multicultural fiction, children's and young adult novels, and popular fiction. Chapters on book publishing, critical reception, and literary histories for all four areas are included in this innovative presentation of a Trans-Pacific postcolonial history of the novel.

Abstract:
Animals seem to be everywhere in contemporary literature, visual art, and performance. But though writers, artists, and performers are now engaging more and more with ideas about animals, and even with actual living animals, their aesthetic practice continues to be interpreted within a primarily human frame of reference—with art itself being understood as an exclusively human endeavor. The critical wager in this book is that the aesthetic impulse itself is profoundly trans-species. Rohman suggests that if we understand artistic and performative impulses themselves as part of our evolutionary inheritance—as that which we borrow, in some sense, from animals and the natural world—the ways we experience, theorize, and value literary, visual, and performance art fundamentally shift. Although other arguments suggest that certain modes of aesthetic expression are closely linked to animality, Rohman argues that the aesthetic is animal, showing how animality and actual animals are at the center of the aesthetic practices of crucial modernist, contemporary, and avant-garde artists. Exploring the implications of the shift from an anthropocentric to a bioaesthetic conception of art, this book turns toward animals as artistic progenitors in a range of case studies that spans print texts, visual art, dance, music, and theatrical performance. Drawing on the ideas of theorists such as Elizabeth Grosz, Jane Bennett, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, Jacques Derrida, Una Chaudhuri, Timothy Morton, and Cary Wolfe, Rohman articulates a deep coincidence of the human and animal elaboration of life forces in aesthetic practices.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract From coping with COVID-19 through to the politics of presidential elections, from the emergence of populist pressures through to the management of rising inequality, and from the repair of historical injustices through to the outbreak of new international conflicts—to mention just a few relevant topics—the analysis of modern politics and governance is increasingly framed through a focus on one simple question: ‘Who’s to blame?’ Answering this question is, however, rarely straightforward. Temporal dimensions, bureaucratic complexity, multi-levelled relationships, and the existence of often deep emotional dynamics in fast-moving environments can serve to complicate the attribution of responsibility. This, in turn, flows through into broader and often socio-cultural questions about scapegoating, sacrificial lambs, and ‘saying sorry’, and less of a focus on questions concerning the politics of praise, positivity, and credit-claiming. Engaging with blame-based questions and achieving a rounded understanding of the politics and governance of blame has in the past been hampered by the existence of a rather scattered and fragmented knowledge base. Islands of theorizing and distinct seams of scholarship have rarely been connected, while a focus on nation states and democratic systems has tended to obscure the allocation of blame in authoritarian regimes or across international boundaries. Through a focus on ‘gaps’, ‘traps’, ‘challenges’, and ‘opportunities’, this major collection reaches across traditional disciplinary, historical, and institutional boundaries—and challenges a number of ‘self-evident truths’ and foundational assumptions—in order to offer a full, original, and integrated account of the politics and governance of blame.
