Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

O'Neill, Rebecca Marie. "Claims, trains and frames : the case of High Speed Two." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7169/.

Full text
Abstract:
Although evidence is utilised by claims-makers to strengthen their arguments, quality evidence is not necessarily the precursor to driving or explaining policy decisions. Actors who share a common frame are more likely to perceive a policy problem and solution in the same way. Therefore, decision-making processes are not about finding the highest quality evidence to support decisions; they becomes about which actor is better at presenting a believable argument that will persuade others their claims are more agreeable. Using a single case study design, qualitative methods are used to examine the role of evidence in the context of the construction of a new high speed rail network in the UK, High Speed Two (HS2). It examines how these actors frame the debate and how they negotiate evidence with one another in different policy environments, through a process of claims-making. The study provides a new perspective to the High Speed Two debate, one which has received little attention in academic circles. A claims-making framework is utilised to provide a rich description of the naturalistic processes occurring in the decision-making processes of High Speed Two and it offers a sophisticated understanding of how evidence interpreted and negotiated by policy actors. In addition, it unpacks and refines notions of argumentation which acknowledges the subjective nature of evidence.

Full text
Abstract:
Ribosomes translate the genetic information encoded by mRNA into proteins. Defective mRNAs can cause stalling of translating ribosomes. The molecule tmRNA (transfer-messenger RNA) rescues stalled ribosomes in eubacteria. Together with its protein partner SmpB, tmRNA mimics a tRNA by entering the ribosomal A site and linking an alanine residue to the growing polypeptide chain. The ribosome then abandons the defective mRNA template and resumes translation on tmRNA, adding ten more amino acids to the nascent polypeptide. As a result of tmRNA action, stalled ribosomes are released and recycled, the defective mRNA is destroyed, and the aborted protein product is tagged for destruction by proteases. It is unknown how the ribosome correctly chooses the position on tmRNA to resume translation. Previous studies implicate the sequence UAGUC found immediately upstream of the first codon in the tmRNA open reading frame. These nucleotides are highly conserved in natural tmRNA sequences. Mutations in this area cause loss of tmRNA function and improper frame choice. Using a genetic selection that ties the life of E. coli cells to the function of tmRNA, we have identified several SmpB mutants that rescue an inactive tmRNA in which this upstream sequence was altered. This links SmpB to the function of these key tmRNA nucleotides. We show that our SmpB mutants affect frame choice using an in vivo assay for tagging in the various frames. We conclude that SmpB plays a role in setting the reading frame on tmRNA.

Agrawal, Devanshu. "A Numerical Model for Nonadiabatic Transitions in Molecules." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2014. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/193.

Full text
Abstract:
In molecules, electronic state transitions can occur via quantum coupling of the states. If the coupling is due to the kinetic energy of the molecular nuclei, then electronic transitions are best represented in the adiabatic frame. If the coupling is instead facilitated through the potential energy of the nuclei, then electronic transitions are better represented in the diabatic frame. In our study, we modeled these latter transitions, called ``nonadiabatic transitions.'' For one nuclear degree of freedom, we modeled the de-excitation of a diatomic molecule. For two nuclear degrees of freedom, we modeled the de-excitation of an ethane-like molecule undergoing cis-trans isomerization. For both cases, we studied the dependence of the de-excitation on the nuclear configuration and potential energy of the molecule. We constructed a numerical model to solve the time-dependent Schr\"{o}dinger Equation for two coupled wave functions. Our algorithm takes full advantage of the sparseness of the numerical system, leading to a final set of equations that is solved recursively using nothing more than the Tridiagonal Algorithm. We observed that the most effective de-excitation occurred when the molecule transitioned from a stable equilibrium configuration to an unstable equilibrium configuration. This same mechanism is known to drive fast electronic transitions in the adiabatic frame. We concluded that while the adiabatic and diabatic frames are strongly opposed physically, the mathematical mechanism driving electronic transitions in the two frames is in some sense the same.

Abstract:
AbstractThe chapter is concerned with the conceptualisation of remedial actions, which have been deployed in response to the “migration crisis”. It discusses how the EU frame-narrative has shifted in favour of risk, resilience, and “exceptionality”, leaving human security dispersed among different types of policy actions. With this in mind, the chapter discusses at length the framing and development of specific policy instruments such as the so-called “EU-Turkey deal”, dataveillance systems, the “hot-spot approach”, or reform of Frontex and Europol, to name a few. It also discusses the emergence of resilience as an important security logic. In this respect, it analyses how this relatively new security narrative has heavily influenced EU security and policy discourse on migration and migrants, calling for increased administrative resilience of the EU asylum system, or border security system, to name a few. Further, the chapter discusses how risk management, resilience, “exceptionality” and human security have been intertwining in policy responses to terrorism, trans-border organised crime, as well as in the utilisation of EU military means in increasing resilience outside EU borders. In this respect, it looks into EUFOR “Sophia”, Frontex Joint Operations and EU capacity building and border assistance missions, discussing their securitising features.

Abstract:
AbstractUnderstanding tree and stand growth dynamics in the frame of climate change calls for large-scale analyses. For analysing growth patterns in mountain forests across Europe, the CLIMO consortium compiled a network of observational plots across European mountain regions. Here, we describe the design and efficacy of this network of plots in monospecific European beech and mixed-species stands of Norway spruce, European beech, and silver fir.First, we sketch the state of the art of existing monitoring and observational approaches for assessing the growth of mountain forests. Second, we introduce the design, measurement protocols, as well as site and stand characteristics, and we stress the innovation of the newly compiled network. Third, we give an overview of the growth and yield data at stand and tree level, sketch the growth characteristics along elevation gradients, and introduce the methods of statistical evaluation. Fourth, we report additional measurements of soil, genetic resources, and climate smartness indicators and criteria, which were available for statistical evaluation and testing hypotheses. Fifth, we present the ESFONET (European Smart Forest Network) approach of data and knowledge dissemination. The discussion is focussed on the novelty and relevance of the database, its potential for monitoring, understanding and management of mountain forests toward climate smartness, and the requirements for future assessments and inventories. In this chapter, we describe the design and efficacy of this network of plots in monospecific European beech and mixed-species stands of Norway spruce, European beech, and silver fir. We present how to acquire and evaluate data from individual trees and the whole stand to quantify and understand the growth of mountain forests in Europe under climate change. It will provide concepts, models, and practical hints for analogous trans-geographic projects that may be based on the existing and newly recorded data on forests.

Abstract:
A Train Operation and Energy Simulator (TOES™) model was created in order to investigate the potential benefits of replacing three-piece trucks with the “Steered Frame Truck” currently under development. Loaded coal trains were simulated with three-piece trucks and with Steered Frame Trucks. Both trains were modeled traveling on Norfolk Southern’s Pocahontas division from MP V435 to V399. The consist and direction of travel are based on actual trains in service. It was found that the model predicts several benefits for replacing three-piece trucks with Steered Frame Trucks. These resulted from the Steered Frame Truck having a greatly reduced rolling resistance while traveling around a curve. The benefits were found to include: a significant reduction in fuel consumption, a reduction in in-train forces, and a small increase in average velocity. One drawback was also predicted: that the reduced rolling resistance would necessitate the increased use of air brakes while traveling down-hill. Although Steered Frame Trucks should produce a considerable reduction in lateral forces, modeling such a reduction was beyond the scope of this work. Similarly, modeling other potential benefits not directly derived from the Steered Frame Truck’s reduced rolling resistance was not considered here.

Abstract:
Hunches allow us to navigate in a trans-scalar world. Without them, teachers, researchers and practitioners would be left aimless.Hunches relate to the embodied and synthetic nature of the knowledge we produce, but also to its unfolding. Instead of denying importance of hunches or minimizing their impact, can we imagine to build a more apt framework for the kinds of encounters and negotiation they facilitate? Shall we do it within pre-existing academic and practical knowledge? Can we set up a pedagogical experience that sets a time and space to collectively integrate and share hunches, to experiment with them and to ultimately operationalize them in designerly or scientific manners? In this paper, we introduce and discuss our experience with Atlas Poliphilo, an experimental studio that runs its second iteration during the spring semester 2019. Neither a design studio nor a seminar, the Atlas sets up a framework for collaborative enquiry that further elaborates on them. The course gathers students from civil and environmental engineering together with students of architecture, and landscape architecture to work collaboratively for one semester. This experience is framed in our work on new visions for the trans-border Greater Geneva as one of the selected teams aiming at tackling its current social, economic and environmental challenges and constructing a framework to think and discuss its growth in the next 35 years. This interdisciplinary course addresses an alternative of perceiving and integrating the constitutive complexity of the territory and the intertwined trajectories of all its different agents. Departing from the situated experiences of the students within a given site of exploration, the course aims at carefully unfolding their many dimensions – the relational and performative aspects of involvement, bodily experience, environmental context and objects, individual and collective cultural frames – allowing to experiment with them and to render them explicit. This is grounded on the conviction that an ability to affect is reciprocated by a capacity of being affected.

Abstract:
The monocular depth estimation task has recently revealed encouraging prospects, especially for the autonomous driving task. To tackle the ill-posed problem of 3D geometric reasoning from 2D monocular images, multi-frame monocular methods are developed to leverage the perspective correlation information from sequential temporal frames. However, moving objects such as cars and trains usually violate the static scene assumption, leading to feature inconsistency deviation and misaligned cost values, which would mislead the optimization algorithm. In this work, we present CTA-Depth, a Context-aware Temporal Attention guided network for multi-frame monocular Depth estimation. Specifically, we first apply a multi-level attention enhancement module to integrate multi-level image features to obtain an initial depth and pose estimation. Then the proposed CTA-Refiner is adopted to alternatively optimize the depth and pose. During the CTA-Refiner process, context-aware temporal attention (CTA) is developed to capture the global temporal-context correlations to maintain the feature consistency and estimation integrity of moving objects. In particular, we propose a long-range geometry embedding (LGE) module to produce a long-range temporal geometry prior. Our approach achieves significant improvements (e.g., 13.5% for the Abs Rel metric on the KITTI dataset) over state-of-the-art approaches on three benchmark datasets.

Abstract:
<p>The application of fracture mechanics allows a detailed assessment of structural details of existing railway bridges. By using crack propagation calculations, the residual service life and respective safe inspection intervals can be determined. For this purpose, cyclic loading due to train passings is needed as an input parameter. Furthermore, an initial crack length and material parameters need to be assumed. In this paper, the focus lies on the loadings generated by each passing train. The influence of single trains as well as the composition of trains and their order on crack propagation is investigated. Train models in the Eurocode [1] are considered and the effects are analysed in the frame of linear elastic fracture mechanics. Combined with the span length, the influence of service trains is varying and an impact of train composition is present. Sequence effects are if at all only slightly visible and therefore may be neglected within the considered calculations.</p>

First of all a survey of the most relevant definitions and hypotheses concerning data, information, communication and knowledge is proposed. Main aim of this introduction is to give to the reader a reference frame for the analysis of the students’ learning and for their knowledge construction works. Soon after some wrong ideas are analyzed with respect to the above conceptual frame, i.e. with respect to didactic communication, to human knowledge construction and to individual cleverness in the use of the concepts pertaining to specific disciplinary fields. At last some considerations on the above results are reported and some hints and suggestions for a revision of the Informing Science definition are proposed; all is done in a perspective that assigns to Informing Science a trans-disciplinary function that helps well-established disciplines like Didactics, Psychology, Philosophy etc. to find new strategies for the analysis of the teaching-learning process.

Abstract:
Abstract As a kind of clean energy with good prospect, the demand of trans-regional transportation of hydrogen is increasing rapidly. However, due to the difficulty and high cost of pipeline transportation, tube bundle containers are more used to transport hydrogen. As the fixing device of tube bundle container, the frame structure should not only ensure that the gas cylinder can be fixed, but also meet the requirements of stiffness and strength. In order to improve the efficiency of hydrogen transportation, a new frame structure of 40-foot high pressure and large capacity tube bundle container for road transportation was designed. There are two groups of tube bundles at the front and rear of the tube bundle container, carrying 18 hydrogen storage bottles. The total hydrogen storage capacity is more than 1000kg and the pressure is 52MPa. The design process is as follows: firstly, the stress analysis of the original frame structure under four inertia force conditions was carried out, and it was found that the structure was difficult to meet the strength requirements for road transportation. Then, the beam distribution of tube bundle container frame structure was preliminarily determined by using the method of topology optimization and the geometric model of the optimized frame structure was remodeled according to the topology optimization results. Finally, the static analysis of the frame structure under various driving inertia force loads was carried out by ANSYS Workbench finite element analysis software. The results show that the designed tube bundle container frame structure meets the requirements of strength. This work provides a reference for the design and safety evaluation of similar tube bundle container frame structure products.

Abstract:
Abstract An extended model for determining dynamic tooth loads on spur and helical gear planetary trains is proposed. Torsional, flexural and axial generalized displacements of all the components are considered and a finite element procedure is used for generality. In order to avoid modulations between meshing pulsations and the carrier angular velocity, equations are written relative to rotating frames fixed to satellite centers. Depending on their architectures, complex drives are broken down in basic 12 degree of freedom elements, namely: - external gear element (sun-satellite element) - internal gear element (ring-satellite element) - pin-carrier element - classical elements for shafts, bearings, couplings, ... Details are given for elementary stiffness matrices. Due to contact conditions between mating teeth, these matrices are full and torsional, bending and traction effects are coupled. State equations point to parametrically excited differential systems with gyroscopic contributions. A first application of the model is conducted on a 3 satellite epicyclic drive whose gyroscopic terms are neglected. Potentially dangerous frequencies for sun-satellite and satellite-ring contacts are determined and contributions of the environment of the planetary train are discussed. Numerical results underline the influence of satellite-carrier links on critical frequencies for tooth loading.

Abstract:
In August and September of 2003, Terasen Pipelines (Trans Mountain) Inc. successfully completed the Horizontal Directionally Drilled [HDD] replacement of it’s NPS 24” pipeline crossing at the Fraser River from Surrey to Coquitlam in southwestern British Columbia. The pipeline replacement was necessary to mitigate the high seismic risk from liquefaction induced lateral spreading of soils on the north and south shores of the Fraser River. The high level of urban development and the close proximity of major linear infrastructure on both sides of the river created spatial restrictions which increased the complexity and risk of the HDD crossing. Measures to reduce construction risks and limit Terasen’s exposure to claims for changed subsurface conditions, environmental damage due to frac-outs, delays, pipe and coating damage, and inability to complete the crossing, were applied. Important strategies used during planning and construction of the crossing included: proper selection of the pipeline route and laydown corridor, site specific geotechnical investigation, HDD annular pressure monitoring, HDD electronic drilling recording, and a contractor pre-qualification process. The final result was that the contractors successfully drilled and installed the 1293m long HDD crossing over a period of one month, without incident. This paper presents the challenges and solutions implemented by the project team to bring the project to its successful conclusion.

New geological mapping in the Tehery Lake-Wager Bay area of northwestern Hudson Bay, Nunavut, frames the emplacement, depositional, and metamorphic histories of the dominant rock types, major structures, and links to neighbouring areas of the central Rae Craton and Chesterfield Block. The area is divided into six domains (Ukkusiksalik, Douglas Harbour, Gordon, and Lunan domains presented here, and Kummel Lake Domain and Daly Bay Complex on adjoining maps) defined by large-scale structures and characterized by differing metamorphic assemblages, Sm-Nd and U-Pb isotopic data, and/or specific lithologies. Meso- to Neoarchean granitoid rocks underlie most of the area and are tectonically intercalated with Archean (volcano)sedimentary packages (Kummel Lake, Lorillard, and Paliak belts). These rocks are locally intruded by ca. 2.62 to 2.58 Ga Snow Island suite granite and cut by younger, thin, east-trending diabase dykes. Paleoproterozoic (volcano)sedimentary rocks are preserved in the Kingmirit belt (Daly Bay Complex) and in basement-cover infolds of Ketyet River group-equivalent strata (Douglas Harbour and Ukkusiksalik domains). In the south, the Daly Bay Complex (comprising mostly mafic granulite-facies rocks) and Kummel Lake Domain (a granulite-grade core complex) share some characteristics with rocks of the Kramanituar and Uvauk complexes, which may delineate the northeastern segment of the ca. 1.90 Ga Snowbird tectonic zone. The Paleoproterozoic Trans-Hudson Orogeny had widespread, penetrative structural and metamorphic effects on the area, and led to the intrusion of the ca. 1.85 to 1.81 Ga Hudson suite monzogranite and mafic ultrapotassic rocks, and ca. 1.83 Ga monzodiorite in the Ukkusiksalik and Douglas Harbour domains. The area is cut by large, southeast-trending gabbro dykes of the 1.267 Ga Mackenzie igneous event.

Scarrott, Rory, Cathal O'Mahony, Michael Sweeney, Jonathan Williams, Jeremy Gault, Timothy Sullivan, and Ana Vila. KETmaritime: Setting course to energise maritime uptake of Key Enabling Technologies. University College Cork, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.33178/10468.10928.

Full text
Abstract:
Key Enabled Technologies(KETs) have the potential to impact on many aspects of society, whilst transforming European industrial competitiveness at the local, national, and global scales. Studies funded by the European Commission have shown that European advances in six technology areas would not only enhance the leadership and competitiveness of European business, but also drive advances across Europe’s business sectors and society. Despite their applicability across sectors, KETs represent a change, and a new manner of moving forward. Business and society view change both positively, welcoming advances in technology and new tools and products to make life somewhat easier for citizens, and negatively, recognising that with change comes risk and a reticence to change. Like society, different industrial sectors will view innovation and new technology differently. As such, each sector requires a slightly different approach to energise KET uptake into their daily operations and lives. Recognition of this reality underpinned the development of this roadmap. Stakeholders have been engaged across the Atlantic Area, through the use of online surveying, face-to-face workshops, and one-to-one interviews conducted virtually. This has enabled the authors to develop an awareness of the maritime scene and community which offers such opportunities and potential for KETs. It also provided insights into the reality of energising this uptake when framed in the context of social, financial and governance realities. Over the course of the project, the team conducted an analysis of the maritime sector, to identify and map out any KET applications that were in development. In parallel, a diverse pool of academic and commercial stakeholders identified the opportunities they could see for KET applications in the maritime sector. They also identified factors which restrict uptake, and restrain viable trans- disciplinary innovations from effectively making it to market. Stakeholder perspectives were combined with the investigative findings to develop a vision for a KET-maritime innovation ecosystem. The barriers and challenges shaped a range of proposed actions, which target different facets of the innovation ecosystem to ease growth and shape development. These actors were iteratively reviewed by stakeholders, and amended accordingly. These actions form the basis of this roadmap, a proposed path towards realising a vibrant growing KET-maritime innovation ecosystem. It contains a suite of 60 inter-linked, systemic actions, framed within 35 action areas to achieve 9 core goals, spread across 5 thematic agendas (policy, funding, building a sustainable innovation ecosystem, capacity building, and awareness raising). This envisioned KET-maritime innovation ecosystem fosters application-led innovation, and advances societal and market benefits for all. Each of the 5 thematic agendas are summarised as a policy brief, provided in the Appendices. The actions applicable to each policy brief are detailed in this report, alongside a proposed timeframe for implementation. Each action is codified, and can be traced through the iterative review process using the provenance table supplied. The potential for KET applications across the Blue Economy is extensive, and all sectors offer at least some opportunities for KETs. Within this landscape, the following sectors are identified as having strong growth potential where KET’s can help to drive that growth: Fisheries and aquaculture; Blue biotechnology; Maritime surveillance; Marine renewable energy; Ship and boat building. Within these sectors, four specific KET-maritime applications research priorities are highlighted: Advanced materials application in marine renewable energy; Photonics application in maritime surveillance; Micro- and nano-electronics in maritime surveillance; Advanced manufacturing techniques in ship and boat building. Finally, the project team would like to take this opportunity to thank all stakeholders who participated in the workshops, interviews, and review activities which culminated in this roadmap.
