Abstract:

Abstract:
During the first half of the twentieth century, many philosophers of memory opposed the postulation of memory traces based on the claim that a satisfactory account of remembering need not include references to causal processes involved in recollection. However, in 1966, an influential paper by Martin and Deutscher showed that causal claims are indeed necessary for a proper account of remembering. This, however, did not settle the issue, as in 1977 Malcolm argued that even if one were to buy Martin and Deutscher’s argument for causal claims, we still don’t need to postulate the existence of memory traces. This paper reconstructs the dialectic between realists and anti-realists about memory traces, suggesting that ultimately realists’ arguments amount to inferences to the best explanation. I then argue that Malcolm’s anti-realist strategy consists in the suggestion that causal explanations that do not invoke memory traces are at least as good as those that do. But then, Malcolm, I argue that there are a large number of memory phenomena for which explanations that do not postulate the existence of memory traces are definitively worse than explanations that do postulate them. Next, I offer a causal model based on an interventionist framework to illustrate when memory traces can help to explain memory phenomena and proceed to substantiate the model with details coming from extant findings in the neuroscience of memory.

Abstract:
One of the last performances Vertical City (Bruce Barton and Pil Hansen) created before moving from Toronto to Calgary was Trace, which premiered at the 2014 SummerWorks festival. Crafted in a compact and intense development process with close collaborators Michelle Polak and Martin Julien, Trace marked a subtle but defining moment in our artistic trajectory. Engaging participants in ways unconceivable in our present pandemic world, it was one of our most illuminating explorations of the potential for/in deeply intimate personal exchange between performers and audience members. Trace was built on, with, and through a process of spontaneous collective reminiscence-one perhaps only conceivable within SummerWorks’ combination of careful curatorial oversight and empowering artist autonomy. Adopting similar structural and aesthetic principles, this impressionistic three-way meandering reflects back on that experience. In the process, it renders a fittingly fragmented but deeply felt ode to SummerWorks’ distinctive blend of intention, intelligence, and opportunity.

Abstract:
Penelitian ini juga mengungkap bahwa pada umumnya lulusan dan pengguna lulusan merasa puas dengan pendidikan di FKMUI.Kata kunci: Tracer study, lulusan, soft-skillAbstractOne important indicator of the success of higher education is the contribution of its alumni in the community and development. Tracer study provides infor- mation on alumni contribution and involvement in the community including working and employment dynamics. Faculty of Public Health University of Indonesia (FPHUI) has conducted a quantitative tracer study in 2003 which informed selected aspects related to alumni and their existence in employment world. This study is a qualitative tracer study to complement the first tracer study and aimed at digging further information on learning experience in FPHUI, working experience, and alumni and user’s satisfaction on education in FPHUI. In-depth interviewed were conducted to 24 informants which divided into 4 groups of institution (government, private sector/industry, non government organization and higher education institutions). Subjects were traced in a multimode way and data was analyzed based on the study main theme. Study exhibits that field-based learning is perceived as the most important learning experience and soft-skill is highly appreciated and most relevant in the real work situation. The study also found that most users and alumni are satisfied with education in FPHUI.Key words: Tracer study, alumni, soft-skill

Abstract:
Let me begin my commentary on Julian Thomas' provocative and stimulating project by invoking, as anthropologists seem to do from time to time, the figure of Sherlock Holmes. Holmes, as we know, classified types of persons, livelihoods, mentalities and criminalities by, among other things, the varieties of dirt on their shoes, the characteristic calluses and grooves on their hands, the imprints they made upon different utensils, the kinds of tobacco, food scraps, and bits of clothing they left behind as traces of their presence. Holmes made a living out of deducing the motivational and moral contours of a human personality from such material indices. He knew the physical components of his environment – the different soils and plants of London, which stores purveyed which implements and goods characteristically utilised by criminals – and he catalogued the sartorial and other visible indices which marked inhabitants of different districts, and socioeconomic and ethnic categories. We also learned that he was not unfamiliar with the Who's Who of London society of his time, not to mention the London constabulary and the organisation of various other professions whose activities related to his interest in crime solving.

Abstract:
The worldwide variation in mating strategies can be explained by differential paternal investment theory, which traces the differences back to the climates where the various peoples (races) evolved. Male provisioning is necessary for women and children to survive cold winters, which is less essential for tropical women. Androstenone may be the substance that makes symmetrical men smell better to fertile females.

Abstract:
The Proeulia auraria mating disruption (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) using synthetic copies of the sex pheromone of the female insect, a mixture of two components E-tetradecyl acetate (E11-14: OAc) + E-11-tetradecanol (E11-14: OH), it was evaluated in orchards infested vine, apples and blueberries using the formulation SPLAT (Specialized Pheromone Lure Application and Technology). In terms of g pheromone and number of stations / sources 0.1 has been tested: 7.8 g in 25 sources, 7.8 g in 75 sources, and 29.5 g in 25 sources in vineyards; and 2.6 g in 25 sources (blueberry) and 75 sources (apple). All trials considered a witness without pheromone (control) and recorded weekly catches of adult male P. auraria Delta traps. In all treatments there was no P. auraria. Catches during the first three weeks, after application of SPLAT, compared with the control group (without pheromone), showing significantly higher catches. These results show a high percentage (100%) of disruption, however it must be confirmed in time and should be supplemented with assessments of damage to the foliage and fruit crops. Keywords: Pheromones, catches, Delta traps, mating disruption.

Abstract:
Mating-induced Fos-immunoreactive (-ir) cells are colocalized with androgen receptors (AR), estrogen receptors (ER), or both in limbic and hypothalamic areas known to mediate male rat mating behavior. A steroid-responsive neural network might govern copulatory behavior in male laboratory rats that is analogous to the network described in female rats that governs the lordosis response. This hypothesized network in males may synchronize and coordinate sexual behavioral responses with physiological responses of the genitals and the internal organs of reproduction. Therefore, the pseudorabies virus (PRV; Bartha strain), a transneuronal, viral retrograde tract tracer, was microinjected into the prostate gland to label this network. After 7 days, brains from infected animals were processed for immunohistochemical labeling of AR, ER, and PRV. The majority of PRV-ir cells exhibited either AR or ER immunoreactivity in the medial preoptic area, median preoptic nucleus, bed nucleus of stria terminalis, hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, and zona incerta, areas known to play roles in male rat mating behavior. Other structures such as the central tegmental field/subparafascicular nucleus of the thalamus, central nucleus of the amygdala, and medial amygdala, also important in the display of male copulatory behavior, were less reliably labeled. Collectively, a steroid receptor-containing neuronal circuit, largely contained in the diencephalon, was revealed that likely is involved in the autonomic control of the prostate gland and the consummatory aspects of male rat mating behavior.

Abstract:
A stage model traces key behavioural tactics and life–history traits that are involved in the transition from promiscuity with no parental care, the mating system that typifies reptiles, to that typical of most birds, social monogamy with biparental care. In stage I, females assumed increasing parental investment in precocial young, female choice of mates increased, female–biased mating dispersal evolved and population sex ratios became male biased. In stage II, consortships between mating partners allowed males to attract rare social mates, provided a mechanism for paternity assessment and increased female ability to assess mate quality. In stage III, relative female scarcity enabled females to demand parental investment contributions from males having some paternity certainty. This innovation was facilitated by the nature of avian parental care; i.e. most care–giving activities can be adopted in small units. Moreover, the initial cost of care giving to males was small compared with its benefit to females. Males, however, tended to decline to assume non–partitionable, risky, or relatively costly parental activities. In stage IV, altriciality coevolved with increasing biparental care, resulting in social monogamy. Approaches for testing behavioural hypotheses are suggested.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Like any number of American allies, Canada declined to recognize the revolutionary government of the People’s Republic of China, and helped exclude it from the United Nations in the 1950s. By the early 1960s, there were strong pressures for change. This article examines the efforts of Paul Martin, Sr., Canada’s foreign minister from 1963 to 1968, to respond to those pressures and modernize his country’s approach to the emerging Asian giant. After establishing Martin’s diplomatic credentials, the paper traces the evolution of his attitude toward Beijing during the 1950s as he accepted the logic and necessity of recognition. Opposed by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and many of his cabinet colleagues, who feared U.S. retaliation, Martin persisted in trying to win over their backing. Progress, when it finally came in 1966, was incremental and much too late, prompting critical attacks on the minister’s reputation and his “hush puppy style.”

Abstract:
This guest column comprises both a review of the English translation of Carlo Ginzburg’s book Threads and Traces: True False Fictive (2012) and some general comments on the merits and demerits of microhistory as a genre poised between historical writing and fiction. The column is published in the context of two others regarding this latter topic — one by Natalie Zemon Davis, the author of the microhistorical classic The Return of Martin Guerre, and one by Colin Rich-mond. Davis’s column is a response to Keith Thomas’s having drawn approving attention to the following remark of J. H. Elliott’s: “Something is amiss when the name of Martin Guerre threatens to become better known than that of Martin Luther.” In the present piece, Thomas writes of Ginzburg, a founder of Italian microhistory, that he is more a “European intellectual” than a “mere historian,” the difference being that the former is less interested in history per se than in fields such as anthropology, philosophy, and literary theory. Thomas’s column expresses doubt about the intellectual restlessness of historians like Ginzburg and about the preparation of microhistorians to write constantly on topics new to them, but it claims as well that Ginzburg’s “combination of erudition and piercing intelligence is irresistible.”

Abstract:
Harpoon of the Hunter, originally written in Inuktitut syllabics and published serially in 1969/70, is frequently characterized as the “first Inuit novel” (McGrath 1984, 81; Chartier 2011). It was deemed the “breakthrough” (McNeill 1975, 117) eagerly awaited by those whose stated goal was to save Canada’s traditional northern culture and its stories, songs, poems and legends from being swept aside by the onslaught of southern modernity. Markoosie’s text helpfully allows discussion of (post)colonial contact zones constructed in and through translational acts such as self-translation, retranslation, and relay/indirect translation as these intersect with Indigenous literature. This article explores the complex trajectory, involving various stakeholders, of the translation, circulation and reception of this important contribution to not only Inuit literature, but Canadian literature as a whole. It examines some relevant features of the author’s own translation of his text into English (1970) and traces them through the two existing French translations by Claire Martin (Markoosie, tr. Martin 1971) and Catherine Ego (Markoosie, tr. Ego 2011).

Abstract:
This article aims to demonstrate the links between the Hip Hop Culture -especially rap music- and the ideas of philosophers, politicians and activists of the left view. Although rap music has turned into a multi-million dollar industry in United States, Hip Hop artists maintain the revolutionary world view of the black freedom movement, which has not ceased since the early days of slavery. Starting from the mid-20th century, the movement became much more organized and aimed to equip black people with socialist ideas, hoping to create an extremely educated and self-sufficient community. The ideas formed by Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Mao Tse-tung, Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and especially Black Panthers Party are still embraced by the Hip Hop Culture and can be traced in various songs and performances. This paper tries to draw attention to such examples, especially in rap songs.

Abstract:
The question about man appears again in contemporary philosophy no longer as an eidetic, but as an existential question (if it ever ceased to be so). Martin Buber, Austrian-Jewish thinker (1878-1965), seeks with his thought to recover the value of man, adding to the existentialist influences of Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, and to the phenomenological influence of Husserl, the dialogic principle; that is, the necessity of the other as a Thou for the becoming of the I as a person. This last concept, person, has its origin in the philosophical discourse in the Trinitarian and Christological Theology of the Fathers of the Church, among them, Augustine of Hippo. In this article we want to make explicit the presence of this Augustinian conception of person in the personalism of Martin Buber. To do so, we will identify the most important characteristics of the person for the bishop of Hippo, which are explained in detail in his work De Trinitate, and then we will link these characteristics with those that are central to Buber's thought. Our hypothesis is that we can find in Buber's anthropology traces of Augustine's thought, influenced especially through existentialism and phenomenology.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article reveals the complex dimensions which make it impossible to speak singularly of ‘the Reformation’. Martin Luther's reforming activity gave rise to conflicting visions of the Church, which are impossible now to resolve. The article traces the trajectory of the English Reformation through the figures of Thomas More and William Tyndale. Although both convinced of the need for reform, More was opposed to Tyndale's approach, which he perceived would lead to the breakdown of order into anarchy. The outworking of this signals the end of Christendom, and has led to continuing mutual incompatibility.

Abstract:
Abstract We report on results from GBT/ARGUS 12CO(1-0) observations for the giant low surface brightness galaxy Malin 1, which allow us to determine an upper limit for its CO mass, and hence its molecular gas mass and molecular gas mass surface density Σ H 2 . Although we performed very deep observations through 17 hr on-source integration time, reaching a noise level of ∼0.2 mK (T A * ) with a corresponding extended source CO limit (3σ) of 0.09 K km s−1, 19 times more sensitive than previous works, we do not detect the 12CO(1-0) emission line. However, the observations allow us to estimate an upper limit (3σ) for the CO mass of about 7.4 × 109 M ⊙ for the extended emission, and 1.4 × 108 M ⊙ for the central part of the galaxy. With these figures we conclude that the molecular gas surface density is lower than 0.3 M ⊙ pc−2, and the corresponding molecular to atomic gas mass ratio is lower than 0.13. The evidence suggests quite different physical conditions for the interstellar medium in Malin 1 compared to that of normal, high surface brightness spirals. This, in one way to another, keeps an usual molecular gas tracer as CO hidden from our observations, in spite of the diverse stellar and structural properties of Malin 1 observed by several authors since more than 30 yr.

Abstract:
Abstract: In § 74 of Being and Time, Martin Heidegger makes a reference to the event of becoming people, understood as a community. The identification of the people with a popular community has an immediate political significance in the cultural context of the Weimar Republic. The claim for a popular community typical of the radical and anti-republican sectors echoes in Heidegger’s work. This article attempts to show how traces of the social and political debate opposing community to society appear in being and Time.

Abstract:
The present study is an overview of the reception of literary Hasidism and its impact on Hungarian literature after 1989. Even at the end of the 1980s, traces of the anamnesis of the Jewish and Hasidic heritage of rural Eastern Hungary can be discerned in literature and public discourse. In fact, we can speak of the reception of literary Hasidism after the end of the fall of the regime and the tabuization of Jewish topics. Indeed, publishing the Hungarian translation of Martin Buber’s (1995) and Jiří Langer’s (2000) collection of Hasidic stories has influenced several works of fiction. Géza Röhrig’s prose poetics of his “imaginary Hasidic stories” resemble those of the magical realism, with their traditional mixture of imitation and imaginary elements. Langer and other Hasidic story collections inspired some dramatic works in the years following the millennium, notably the plays of Péter Kárpáti, Martin Boross and Szilárd Borbély. Szilárd Borbély’s case is special for our study, as he incorporates Hasidic motifs and reminiscences in several of his works, but mixes them with Christian elements, creating a specific, culturally hybrid bricolage-poetics.

Abstract:
All the important developments that have ever sprung from Protestantism over the centuries can ultimately be traced back to Luther’s thinking. All the tendencies that Protestantism has ever espoused are either explicitly or implicitly present in Luther.

Abstract:
This study aims to determine how the law of hybrid contracts according to the hadith reviews. The literature study method was used in this research. Researchers found several hadiths about the prohibition of baiataini fi baiatin. After being traced based on their sanad and matan, the quality of these hadiths is shahih or authentic. Islamic economists and Muslim bankers use the hadith about the prohibition of baiataini fi baiatin as a guideline for determining the prohibition of hybrid contracts. Furthermore, the existence of research on the quality of this hadith will be beneficial for people to increase their confidence in rejecting or avoiding transactions categorized as hybrid contracts.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article concentrates on the signs of authorial presence in Michel Houellebecq’s novel The Map and the Territory, including the author’s name, achievements and emploi. A seemingly trivial procedure, so frequent in postmodern prose, in Houellebecq’s work, it becomes an important element of a complex structure, which engages in a polemic with the regime of postmodernity. The article also traces Houellebecq’s debt to major trends in European philosophy. The Map and the Territory problematizes the relationship between the original and the copy as well as the notion of the end of history. The article references, among others, Alexandre Kojève, Martin Heidegger, Plato and Jean Baudrillard.

Abstract:
AbstractThe underlying molecular mechanisms of programmed cell death associated with fungal allorecognition, a form of innate immunity, remain largely unknown. In this study, transcriptome analysis was used to infer mechanisms activated during barrage formation in vic3-incompatible strains of Cryphonectria parasitica, the chestnut blight fungus. Pronounced differential expression occurred in barraging strains of genes involved in mating pheromone (mf2-1, mf2-2), secondary metabolite production, detoxification (including oxidative stress), apoptosis-related, RNA interference, and HET-domain genes. Evidence for secondary metabolite production and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation is supported through UPLC-HRMS analysis and cytological staining, respectively. Differential expression of mating-related genes and HET-domain genes was further examined by RT-qPCR of incompatible interactions involving each of the six vegetative incompatibility (vic) loci in C. parasitica and revealed distinct recognition process networks. We infer that vegetative incompatibility in C. parasitica activates defence reactions that involve secondary metabolism, resulting in increased toxicity of the extra- and intracellular environment. Accumulation of ROS (and other potential toxins) may result in detoxification failure and activation of apoptosis, sporulation, and the expression of associated pheromone genes. The incompatible reaction leaves abundant traces of a process-specific metabolome as conidiation is initiated.

Abstract:
The paper analyses two controversial historical stories about love related to the Serbian and Romanian Royal Courts, which caused stormy criticism and national scandals during the last century. Draga Masin (Draginja P. Milićević Lunjevica, 1867–1903), a royal damsel who became the Serbian Queen, was the wife of King Alexander Obrenovic of Serbia. Elena Lupescu (Elena Lupescu Magda Wolf, 1895–1977), a mistress, and later the wife of the Romanian King Carol II (first son of Prince Ferdinand of Hohenzollern – Sigmaringen and of Marie of Edinburgh), left remarkable traces in the history of Romanian monarchy. By confronting different perspectives we will try to show the (de)construction of the characters Elena Lupescu and Draga Masin during the 21st century. Entering the closed circle of ties with members of the nobility where blue blood must not be confused with unworthy blood and thus contaminated – the starting point of our paper is to identify the historical typological analogies between Draga and Elena by means of motives of blood and class identity. Recent historiographical tendencies shed new light on the earlier notions regarding these two female figures that are often condemned and considered taboo in society.

Abstract:
This is a valuable companion to longer works on the history of the African American experience, especially the less commonly taught but extremely important history of the movement for civil rights in the United States-the struggle for equal access to educational opportunities. The "brief history" is brief enough (40 pages) and the array of documents reproduced here is wide enough to make this reviewer conclude that Martin has provided a text that students and teachers will consult, and that the general reader will like to keep. The "brief history" of the Brown decision is presented as the "Introduction" to the book. This traces the history from the emergence of Jim Crow in the immediate post-emancipation era to the NAACP's successful legal battles against inequality and discrimination culminating in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas (1954). Martin presents the history as a "legal struggle." It was a struggle that seemed to touch on all aspects of American life, including the legal profession itself. Among the decisions that "nibbled away at Plessy" (Plessy v. Ferguson [1896]) were Gaines v. Canada ( 193 8) and Sipuel v. Oklahoma State Regents (1948).

Abstract:
Estradiol-17β (E2) plays critical roles in female maturation, sexual receptivity, ovulation and fertility. In many mammals, contact with males can similarly affect these female parameters, whereas male excretions contain significant quantities of E2. We administered radiolabeled estradiol ([3H]E2) to male mice in doses representing a small fraction of their endogenous E2. These males were paired with sexually receptive females, and radioactivity was traced into the females’ systems. In Experiment 1, males were given [3H]E2 at 24 and 1 h before mating. Male-to-female [3H]E2 transfer intensified with increasing numbers of intromissions and spiked in the uterus after insemination. In Experiment 2, sexually experienced young males received [3H]E2 at 72 and 24 h before mating, and all mated to ejaculation. The copulatory plug deposited in the female reproductive tract contained substantial levels of radioactivity. The uteri, other tissues and blood serum of females displayed radioactivity indicative of E2 transfer. In Experiment 3, radioactivity was observed 3 and 18 h after insemination in the females’ uteri and other tissues, including parts of the brain. In Experiment 4, we observed substantial levels of radioactivity in semen as well as the copulatory plugs retrieved from the females after mating. Transferred E2 could directly affect abundant estrogen receptors in the female reproductive tract without potential metabolism by the liver. Sexually transferred E2 may facilitate uterine preparation for blastocyst implantation. These data converge with several lines of evidence indicating that male-sourced E2 can transfer to proximate females in bioactive form, contributing to various mammalian pheromonal effects.

Abstract:
Considering the rapid development of oceanic logistics, the maritime traffic is one of the worst offenders for air and water pollution. This paper primarily aims to explore the key concepts and terms applied to denote the sustainability issues in maritime transport and main challenges for the shipping industry. The present study investigates the existing sustainability frameworks on the relationship between sustainability and maritime industry. Also the author proposes to use modelling approaches to measure the relationship between oil prices, exchange rate, services export and ocean transport value added. The empirical findings indicate that growth rate of the crude oil prices has negative impact on ocean transport value added growth, and it can be traced that the oil industry has a strong influence on value creation in maritime clusters and their competitiveness, especially on the shipping sector. The analysis also sheds light on the impacts of relationship between environmental pollution and maritime cluster activity (through the validation of the EKC hypothesis in Norway). The current paper reveals that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between economic growth and CO2 emissions. The empirical evidences show that the links between CO2 emissions and ocean transport value added are more significant than with energy consumption indicator. It can be assumed that, due to the energy efficiency policy and technological leadership in the shipping industry, the environmental impact of energy use (renewable energy) has improved.

Abstract:
The recorded behaviour of wild species of Ovis at the beginning of the breeding season supports the proposal that mating is synchronized by the 'ram effect', a phenomenon already described in domestic sheep. Animals separate into exclusive male flocks, and flocks of females and young animals for most of the year. They reunite just before the rutting season. At lambing there appear to be behavioural mechanisms that ensure that ewes lamb in close proximity to one another. It is hypothesized that these behavioural characteristics of wild sheep help protect the newborn and that much of the reproductive and maternal behaviour of domestic sheep may be traced to comparable behaviour in wild species.

Abstract:
Males of the bushcricket Metrioptera roeselii bear paired titillators that are spiny genital structures supposedly functioning as copulatory courtship devices. During copulation, the male inserts its titillators into the female's genital chamber, where they rhythmically tap on the sensilla-covered dorsal surface of the genital fold. Here, we investigated the stimulatory function of male titillators during mating in M. roeselii . Tracer backfills of presumptive mechanosensory sensilla at the female genital fold revealed a thick bundle of sensory axons entering the last unfused abdominal ganglion (AG-7). Electrophysiological recordings of abdominal nerves demonstrated that females sense mechanical stimulation at their genital fold. The mechanosensory responses, however, were largely reduced by the insecticide pymetrozine that selectively blocks scolopidia of internal chordotonal organs but not campaniform and hair sensilla on the outer cuticle surface. In mating experiments, the females showed resistance behaviours towards males with asymmetrically shortened titillators, but the resistance was largely reduced when mechanoreceptors at the female's genital fold were either pharmacologically silenced by pymetrozine or mechanically blocked by capping with UV-hardened glue. Our findings support the hypothesis that the male titillators in these bushcrickets may serve as copulatory courtship devices to mechanically stimulate the female genitalia to reduce resistance behaviour.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the work of the outstanding Kazakh poet Otezhan Nurgaliev and the ideas of the German philosopher Martin Heidegger about the power of words and the essence of poetry in his work “On Poets and Poetry. Hölderlin. Rilke. Trakl ” on the basis of theoretical and methodological research in domestic science and world philosophy, it is also assessed whether the prerequisite for the emergence of language and the basis of the beginning of being is poetic. In the poet’s poems and reflections, the subtext of symbols and poetic images related to the spiritual being and social reality of society are traced, their significance in understanding the realities of modern society and modernity are determined. In the collection of poems «School of Athens» Otezhan Nurgaliev opened to Kazakh readers the wisdom of world philosophy and the ancient era from a new side in the language of poetry, which is close to its national reality. This approach was mastered by the poet through world philosophy and literature, as well as oriental culture, national spirituality, turkic traditions, and folk wisdom published at that time.

Abstract:
In spite of the progress made toward gender equality, women are still subject to harassment on the basis of the traditional gender roles in today's society. This research is intended to analyze the depiction or representation of women in literary work in order to reveal misogyny lurking in the text. The novel used in this research is A Dance with Dragons novel (2011) by George R.R Martin. The issue of representation and misogyny tendencies are found in the novel. Qualitative research with a feminist approach was applied for the purpose to find the research objective which is to know the way Daenerys, Arya, and Melisandre are presented in the novel and to identify the misogyny lurking behind Daenerys, Arya, and Melisandre’s efforts to maintain their position. This analysis employs de Beauvoir’s Second Sex theory of women as “The Other”. The research reveals that behind the three powerful female characters, there is misogyny lurking behind Daenerys, Arya, and Melisandre's efforts in maintaining their powerful representation in George R.R. Martin’s A Dance with Dragons novel. The novel contains several examples of misogynist depictions, some of which include the objectification of women and an underestimation or undervaluation of female characters.
