Full textThe Commentary on John of Origen (c. 185-c. 254) is an important exegetical work, maybe the chef-d’œuvre of this prolific Greek-speaking author who regarded the Bible as the foundation of his works, both in his exegetical commentaries and in his critical edition of the text. This work is also the first commentary on the Gospel of John that has survived to this day. Yet, there are only partial studies about it whether thematic or theological. The present work deals with this commentary as a whole from a literary point of view. Reading the text closely and with a particular approach, it defines the stylistic and literary devices with which the author builds up his interpretation. In this perspective, it analyses how the exeget puts into practice the ancient hermeneutical principle that consists in “explaining Scripture by Scripture”.Thus after presenting the commentary itself and his features, it describes the different elements of the writing process, and then offers some comments about the structure of the exegesis. It highlights the fact that the commentary paradoxically gives way to the biblical text itself. Indeed, the author constantly tries to imit the form and the language of the text he comments, and his own task seems to consist less in building a new work than in “picking” and making the connection between different biblical elements, like a “herbalist of Scripture”. Surprisingly then, the author uses a similar method in commenting the Bible and in editing its text

Full textAristotle's Metaphysics contains analyses of movement. The present thesis seeks to determine the reasons for their presence in these texts, and the point of view - different from that of physics - under which Aristotle studies what the causes and principles of natural movements are. A study of previous opinions and the construction of correlative aporias shows that Aristotle situates the inquiry of the Metaphysics in continuity with those of other philosophers: the aim is to conceive what the first principles of all things, or of all beings, are, in a way that improves on the Physicists and the Platonists. Now, since he criticises his predecessors’ principles on the ground that they are incapable of explaining natural movements, we can conclude that the solutions conceived by Aristotle do provide first principles capable of accounting for natural movements. The wisdom and the first science of the Metaphysics is, in my view, this search for the first principles and the first causes. This science is the science of substance, and so is distinguished from physical science, in that it establishes that substances are the first principles of all things, and this in three different senses: (1) substances are principles of all things, since without them there can be no other beings and no movement; (2) the form is first substance and principle of compound substances; and, with matter, it is an ungenerated principle for their generations and their movements; (3) there are substances that are prior to natural substances: the ordered movers of the movements of the celestial spheres
Damas, Anny-France. "L’actualité des traités chirurgicaux dans la Collection Hippocratique." Thesis, Paris 4, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA040233.
Full textThe present study focuses on surgery procedures in fifth and fourth century B.-C. Greece. The analysis of these procedures is based on information stemming from the text constituting the Hippocratic Corpus as well as from Hippocrates’ commentators such as Celsus and Galen- and modern surgeons. The texts analyzed particularly those named “surgical “are those describing a manual intervention on the human body, most frequently supported by an instrument considered as “surgical.” They offer indications on the pathologies treated. Certain iconographic documents are of particular interest. The confrontation between Hippocratic texts and modern surgical techniques will enable to estimate the possibility of restitution of the surgical procedures’ conditions by the Hippocratic surgeons

Full textAs we progress towards the 17th century, the demonological discourse tends to distance itself from the traditional knowledge, searching for its truth in facts and experience. Shifting towards empiricism, the witch's body becomes the privileged stage for a confrontation between the devil and the judge. However, in order for this body to reveal its monstrosity, the demonologist must become both exegete and producer of words, which in turn, he finds in the witch as tangible signs of her otherness. Moreover, in his desire to interrogate the witch, the scholar wishes mostly to question the feminine nature, cloaking her with an otherness of problematic and dangerous attributes. Through scholarly language, Renaissance demonology wishes to significantly organize the divided world of witchcraft and in the process, a certain feminine identity, diabolically other.
Through the works of two demonologists having had a direct experience with trials, the Discours execrable des sorciers by Henri Boguet (1602) and the Tableau de l'inconstance des mauvais anges et demons (1612) by Pierre de Lancre, we explore the link between malefic femininity and witchcraft: the images they convey, the fascination they trigger and their mirroring through and in writing.

Full textThe modern irish state began its existence in 1921 with the conclusion of a treaty between the british government and the representatives of the irish people. This treaty gave to the new state a constitutional status similar to that enjoyed by the other dominions at the time, notably canada. At the time the dominions were not yet fully competent to conduct their own external relations. They could conclude commercial treaties but they had not yet acquired the right to conclude political treaties. The constitutional status of the dominions developed considerably because of the decisions taken at the imperial conferences of 1923, 1926 and 1930. From 1923 the dominions, including the irish free state, could conclude political treaties. After the imperial conference of 1926 the procedures to be followed by the dominions in relation to the negociation, signature and ratification of treaties were well established. The constitution of the irish free state made no reference to external relations. The 1937 constitution contains provisions relating to international relations, notably article 29. 6 which recognizes ireland's adherence to the dualist theory concerning the relationship between internal law and treaties. The 1937 constitution also makes provision for ireland's membership of the european communities. Because of article 29. 6 the courts have, until recently, refrained from interfering with government action in the conduct of the state's external relations. There are several ways of introducing the provisions of treaties into internal law. Different techniques are used to this end. Special statutory procedures are followed in the case of extradition and double taxation treaties. Ireland is not a party to the vienna convention on the law of treaties. Its practice in relation to the conclusion of treaties is based on the decisions taken at the imperial conferences of 1923 and 1926. This practice conforms generally to the rules of customary international law
