Abstract:
Before the introduction of degree programmes in 1983, the route followed by technician engineers being trained in Hong Kong, particularly at the Hong Kong Polytechnic, was quite unique. About 680 students are admitted into the eight Higher Diploma engineering programmes at Higher Technician level each year at the Hong Kong Polytechnic. The students first took a three-year Higher Diploma programme, continued for a one-year Associateship programme and finally sat the Engineering Council Part II Examinations, thus fulfilling the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer status.

Abstract:
The master thesis presented deals with the  question of whether superiors in the engineering field in Germany should undergo managerial training to be better-suited managers than superiors without such training. This thesis looks into this question through a survey of a homogenous group of engineering professionals working in Germany. The survey strives to gain information from the engineering professionals regarding their opinions and experience as managers with and/or without managerial training and their capacity to fulfill their managerial duties. This problem resonates widely in the engineering world, yet it seems that not enough action is being taken towards educating personnel in elevated positions throughout a company’s hierarchy.

Abstract:
The theme of the research stemmed from the generally held conviction that engineers are not found populating the managerial levels of UK based companies to the extent that is the case in most of continental Europe. Put simply, in the UK engineering is not considered to be the 'royal route' to management. In 1978 through a funding initiative by the then University Grants Committee, management enhanced 4 year engineering degree courses known as 'Dainton' courses after the then Chain-nano f the committee, Sir Frederick Dainton, were launched to attract some of the most able candidates to engineering. Designed to "fast track" engineers into management these courses have been running now for nearly 20 years and the research set out to answer whether their graduates have become managers, professional engineers, both or neither and how their background in technology and management may have influenced their subsequent career progression and migration into management. The study is based on 575 usable responses to a postal questionnaire sent to 1,838 'Dainton' graduate engineers and comparable control groups from Birmingham, Brunel, Cambridge, Impenal, Oxford and Strathclyde Universities. The responses to the questionnaire are supplemented by an ethnographical study of documentary course literature and discussions with staff responsible for the courses. Contrasts were found between the groups of engineers and the thesis explores these differencesa nd discussesth e possible reasonsf or them. By developing an insight into the role and influence of management training in engineering degrees the thesis concludes bv examining the consequences for the management of careers.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to develop a novel framework for the evaluation of computer-based training (CBT) programmes used by employees of industrial organisation. Whilst there is increasing demand for training within industrial organisations, appropriate models for the evaluation of CBT programmes appeared to be absent. The literature review indicated that there are many models of CBT programme evaluation that can provide data about a programme’s effectiveness. However none of these models addressed the contextual factors that could affect a programme’s operation or effectiveness. These models would indicate to the designer of the CBT programme whether or not a particular programme was effective but not why. This research aimed to rectify this situation by producing a model of evaluation that would assist designers of CBT programmes understand the influence of contextual factors on their designs. In order to achieve this it was necessary to gain an understanding of the factors that would affect the attainment of appropriate training outcomes. It was also necessary to understand those variables that would influence the use of CBT programmes within industrial organisations. The former objective was achieved through an analysis of the existing literature on learning, the latter through investigation of the criteria used by employees of industrial organisations to evaluate CBT programmes. In the case of this research, 47 employees of 9 industrial organisations were asked to evaluate a specific CBT programme. Evaluative verbal utterances about a CBT programme were elicited from participants using a methodology that involved the use of concurrent verbal protocols supplemented by a series of specific questions on particular design features of the CBT programme. The research strategy that was adopted arose in response to a need to minims the time demands placed on participants, all of whom were employees of industrial organisations. The results of this analysis allowed the development of a descriptive model that identified the contextual factors that affected the perceived effectiveness of CBT programmes. Further models of evaluation were also produced. A normative model that described the cognitive and motivational factors that were believed to be present during the usage of different CBT programmes. The descriptive and normative models were combined to provide a normative model for the evaluation of CBT programmes used in industrial organisations. The limitations of this model and the research methods employed are also discussed.

Brittle, Robert J. "From evaluation to meta-evaluation of engineers' training in the automotive industry." Thesis, Durham University, 1999. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/4969/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents and analyses the evaluation of an European wide training programme aimed at engineers working in a large multinational automotive company. The training programme is unique in that it was conceived to address particular operational concerns and involved a multicultural workforce from six European countries. The evaluation of the training, which extends from the pilot stages of the programme through to its full implementation, where Kirkpatrick's four level evaluation framework is used, is the company’s first large scale attempt at systematic training evaluation. The evaluation of the programme is typical in its approach as reflected in the wide body of literature, however the use of meta-evaluation to determine the overall value of the evaluation approach in a commercial context provides originality and the basis for establishing an alternative approach to evaluating vocational training. The main body of the thesis is presented in three parts. Part I provides a critical review of the literature relating to; learning and training; conceptualisations of evaluation; and measurement and evaluation methodology, to establish the foundation for the empirical study. Part II is a detailed analysis of the evaluand, the evaluation methodology employed, and the results and outcomes from the evaluation. Part III provides directions for training evaluation based on a meta-evaluation of the empirical study. The thesis draws conclusions with respect to the role of evaluation in organisational training. The evaluation of training is largely conceptualised in the literature as being concerned with the assessment of value or worth of training to an organisation, which is the prevailing paradigm of Kirkpatrick's training evaluation framework. From the evidence obtained through the empirical study with regard to utility, feasibility, propriety and accuracy, it is concluded that the role of evaluation should be directed towards maximising value or worth of training through the systematic assessment, feedback and optimisation of the identifiable parameters of the training process, with the outcomes of training forming part of an overall evaluation of training framework.

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is the career choice of final year women civil engineering students. Though a considerable body of general literature exists on women in the labour market, including women in engineering and women in construction, there is a lack of knowledge about women in civil engineering specifically. Present attitudes are largely based on unproven assumptions unsupported by empirical data. By examining the career choice of the group, the aims of the thesis were to examine the factors affecting career choice of women civil engineers; to extend the knowledge base and to test some of the current thinking about women in engineering and construction. Four objectives were formulated. These concerned the initial reasons for the career choice, differences in male and female choices, whether there is a relationship between college experiences and career choice and whether there is a relationship between career expectations and career choice. These objectives were explored in a comprehensive literature review, and in an extensive series of interviews followed by a national survey of all final year women civil engineering students and an equivalent number of final year male civil engineering students. The data was analyzed by testing a number of hypotheses for each of the four objectives using advanced statistical techniques. The results of the study showed that there were a very large number of complex factors involved in women's career choice. Of particular interest were the differences in the career choices of male and female civil engineering students, that some college experiences of women were related to career choice and that generally the beliefs women had of a career in civil engineering did not appear to be related to their choice of sector of civil engineering. The thesis, in its original research, has clearly made an important contribution to the study of women in civil engineering and there is ample scope for future research projects to build on this original research. These findings have important implications for career advisors, teachers, lecturers in higher education as well as employers in the construction industry.

Forbes, Brian. "Enhancing co-operative education through improved service delivery with reference to civil engineering technicians in training." Thesis, Peninsula Technikon, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/1966.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Post School Education))--Peninsula Technikon, Cape Town,1999
The education and training of civil engineering technicians is an integrated and dynamic process. The success of any service delivery process will be dependent on the meaningful interaction of all role players, given their understanding and commitment to desirable educational ideals and endeavours. With the rapid changes in technology and the arrival of democracy in South Africa, an ideal opportunity existed to review current practices and operational procedures, with a view to making some input toward restructuring. A review of service delivery strategies could make a positive contribution to improving the education and training of civil engineering technicians as well as improving the ideals of co-operative education. The purpose of the study was to analyse the service delivery strategies within the National Diploma in Civil Engineering course by examining the relationship between the views and expectations of students, academic staff and industry towards desirable leaming outcomes, against the current status of service delivery strategies. The study then explored success factors that could enhance the development of civil engineering technicians in training, within the co-operative education relationship. The literature study concentrated on the nature and value of co-operative education. It also highlighted the contributions of the respective role players in educational strategies and their added value to the education of technicians in training. An important distinction was established between training and learning where training, as a content-driven concept has been redefined to learning, which implies a more student-centred approach in the search for knowledge and the demonstration of skills. Questionnaires were compiled which attempted to measure views and perceptions on desirable outcomes in relation to current practices prevailing in service delivery strategies by technikons and industry. The survey was completed by a total of 268 respondents consisting of 178 students, 40 academic staff from nine technikons and 50 companies from industry in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Kwazulu Natal and Gauteng. A statistical analysis and observations revealed reasonable consistency in the desirable outcomes of student learning and achievement. The survey also revealed that there were significant differences between the three samples when it came to measuring the contributions and involvement of the three parties in service delivery implementation. The conclusions flowing from the literature study and the empirical investigation revealed that the gap between the current status and desirable learning outcomes are being prejudiced by the inefficient application and utilisation of available and resources.

Abstract:
Many engineers perform managerial roles; however, their professional education in engineering usually does not include management education. Thus, this study examined the participation of the Nigerian licensed engineers in professional development activities in management. The study proposed (1) to determine if, in fact, Nigerian licensed engineers participate in management education and training; (2) to determine the management programs in which the engineers participated and whether participation was voluntary or required, or within Nigeria or overseas; (3) to test hypotheses dealing with these variables: age, management level, academic level, years of experience in a managerial role, and sector of employment; and (4) to identify the mean number of hours of participation. Also, the engineers were asked to judge the value of non-credit versus credit programs.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines issues in Australian undergraduate engineering management studies in the context of flexible learning delivery. It is proposed that, within an Australian context: a) the management skills and competencies required by graduate engineers can be determined and classified on a rational basis, permitting an educational focus on those elements most appropriate for graduates; and b) on-line and other computer-based technologies are a practical and effective method for the support of undergraduate engineering management studies. The doctoral project incorporates: • an examination of the nature of engineering management; • a review of the relevant literature establishing the importance of management studies in undergraduate engineering courses; • a review of historical and recent developments in Australian undergraduate engineering management studies; • an investigation of the management skills and competencies required by graduate engineers - based on original research; • an examination of flexible delivery of engineering education - based on professional practice experience; and • an evaluation of case studies of flexible delivery of engineering management education - based on original research and professional practice experience. A framework of ranked classified management skills is developed. Broadly, the ranking framework is generic professional skills, followed by general management skills and technical discipline specific management skills, followed by other professional discipline skills and theoretical skills. This framework provides a rational basis for design of undergraduate engineering management studies. This is supplemented by consideration of the management skills required for the future of engineering practice. It is concluded that undergraduate engineering management education is well suited to delivery and support by on-line and computer-based technology. Recent developments in improved access to the Internet, software systems for on-line collaboration and changes in copyright legislation to create a broad-based right to communication via on-line media have contributed to the facilitation of on-line delivery of teaching and learning. It is noted that though many on-line infrastructure issues have been satisfactorily resolved, higher level issues will emerge as being crucial, including the academic staff development and reward for operating in an online teaching environment and the financial sustainability of on-line development and delivery of courses.

Kra, Koffi. "An evaluation study of the education and training of civil engineers in the Cote d'Ivoire : with reference to the Higher National School of Public Works (Enstp) and to the graduates performance on the labour market." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1991. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10020191/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an evaluation study of the outcomes of the education and training of civil engineers in the Cote d'Ivoire. It examines the ways in which the training system in operation at the Higher National School of Public Works (Enstp) has or has not achieved its objectives in supplying the labour market with the requisite technical manpower. It focuses on three main questions: 1.) To what extent can the skills acquired during training be described as relevant for employment? 2.) What factors, if any, influence the relationship between training and work? 3.) What measures can be taken to achieve a better match between training qualifications and the skill requirements of jobs? The conceptual framework adopted, seen as a working hypothesis rather than a paradigm, and referred to as combination theory, draws on existing approaches to the issue at stake according to their relevance for the points raised. In this way, it seeks to compensate for their limitations when applied in isolation. The methods used for data collection and analysis are mainly qualitative, though comprising some basic statistics. From the analysis of data, collected in a questionnaire survey and interviews involving respectively 93 Enstp graduates and 47 employers, there appears to be a consensus between all parties concerned that training qualifications are relevant for professional practice. The weaknesses observed are described as insufficient practical experience in some engineering subjects (e.g. engineering design), and lack of general education as well as skills in the management of financial resources, pub1ic administration and language. A number of factors associated with working conditions, the socio-political environment of workplaces and behaviour, are quoted as causing distortions in the relationships between training and jobs. These include recruitment and placement procedures, unclear job description and career structure, imperfect reward systems, rigid hierarchies and inter-personal conflicts. In the light of the information thus derived from the survey and the interviews, it is suggested that measures should be taken to turn the Enstp into a "centre of specialization" catering for all initial and in-service training needs in the engineering profession and operating as a training and research institution for all Francophone countries. This requires some adjustments to existing training programmes and changes in the rules regulating the planning, management and financing of training. It is also recommended that measures be taken in workplaces to ensure that "the right persons get access to the right jobs".

Full text
Abstract:
The prominent shifts towards greater flexibility in work arrangements as well as in organizational forms have had profound effects on the labor market for engineers, and given rise to the technical consulting industry. The technical consulting firm is becoming increasingly important in many technology-based industries, as a growing number of technology-based firms rely on technical consulting firms to produce their outputs. In that respect, the technical consulting firm is an important actor for the organization and development of engineering knowledge, as well as for the transfer of knowledge to and among technology-based firms. However, despite its growing importance, the technical consulting firm has received scant scholarly attention. Hence, the purpose of this thesis is to enhance the understanding of the roles of the technical consulting firm and the technical consultants for the transfer of knowledge among problem-solving contexts and client organizations. This thesis is comprised of a compilation of three papers and an extended summary. It draws upon a qualitative single-case study in one of Scandinavia’s leading technical consulting firms. This thesis takes a multilevel perspective, and utilizes an embedded case study design to study both the organizational and the individual level of analysis. In total, it builds on 54 interviews with managers and consultants, 14 observations of a competence development program for engineers who are in the beginning of their careers as technical consultants, and 2 workshops with managers. This thesis identifies two primary capabilities, developed through the interaction between the firm and the individual level: swift transition and knowledge cycling. The findings indicate that the link between the respective capabilities creates the foundation for the successful organization of engineering knowledge. Hence, these capabilities illustrate that the technical consulting firm has other roles to play than merely solving the problem of numerical and functional flexibility. Moreover, this thesis develops the process of knowledge cycling. The knowledge cycling process addresses the role of the individual consultant in the transfer of knowledge within and among problem-solving contexts, and consists of three distinct knowledge processes found prominent during the different phases of a consulting assignment: (1) knowledge acquisition, (2) knowledge integration, and (3) knowledge transfer. Furthermore, this thesis provides insight into how formal training affects the technical consultants’ ability to transfer knowledge. The findings suggest that this ability is developed through a three-stage process: (1) identifying the core of an assignment, (2) broadening the scope of action, and (3) becoming more self-confident in the role of consultant.

Knight, John Anthony. "Royal Engineer Geographic Technicians : exploring their attitudes to education and training." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2015. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/19925/.

Full text
Abstract:
A creative approach is presented for understanding the attitudes of Royal Engineer (RE) Geographic Technicians (Geo Techs) to training and education. Through a grounded theory methodology, participants' experiences of learning and teaching are explored. These provide a greater awareness and perception of attitudes than have emerged through more established, formal methods of evaluating the effectiveness of training. Recent developments in technology, doctrine, requirements and operations have brought about significant changes to the range and complexity of subjects taught in the field of Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT). This in turn has increased the challenges to RE staff and students, many of whom find themselves instructing on or undertaking demanding degree level courses without the requisite formal qualifications. Grounded theory, based on guidelines rather than rigid rules, is adopted to provide a study of RE Geographic Technicians' learning experiences from the perspective of those who live it and for an interpretive understanding of their meanings to emerge. The policies, culture and social processes in which the RE Geo training takes place are explored to appreciate the influence of the training environment on learning. Data obtained through focus groups held with students and instructors, and through in-depth interviews with individuals who hold key roles associated with the course, recognises the relativism of multiple social realities in developing a rich source of knowledge on attitudes to learning. The collection, synthesis and analysis of data led to the emergence of core categories: context, commitment, expectations, motivation, qualifications, relevance and respect. Through their engagement the research participants' awareness, in particular of instructors, of Geographic Technicians' attitudes to training and education has been raised. Using the theoretical framework of communities of practice, the challenges and effectiveness of the RSMS as a learning organisation for the instructors is reviewed. By exploring beyond the routine, an insight is offered into how the quality of teaching and learning can be enhanced for RE Geographic Technicians through a better understanding of attitudes to learning. Whilst the research is focused on a specific environment the lessons identified can have relevance to other learning situations where the training and education are closely aligned to the work place or to professional practice. In particular, the way in which teacher-practitioners are inducted, developed and employed in training and education has resonance with the wider lifelong learning sector.

Abstract:
This research analyzes the impact of the digital technologies on the efficiency of innovation of the vocational engineer’s trainings, and the flexibility of educational devices in distance learning, as well as on the professionalization of the teacher’s university guardians. This, with regard to the models of managerial organization and educational practices of ICTS(INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES).With the glance as of results from the axis 1, it arises that, the organization devices as regard mater degree, offer the model type bimodal hybrid with an imbalance in the burden-sharing with charges activities higher as distance involved than presence. The indirect impact of managerial actions favor the flexibility of devices in terms of managing professionals constraints as regard distance geographical and the hourly adaptation, the opening to the common projects, the free choice of methods and communications tools. It accentuated the emergency of the behavioral changes, and a strong dynamics of team spirit accepting the constructive differences. In addition, from de axis 2 of search, the intensive use of the inciting digital tools and interactive tool is not enough to explain their effectiveness or performance durably in supporting quality and evolution of the device’s training. It makes emerge the difficulty in organizing, illustrating and sharing the graphic figures or symbols, in order to explain reasoning during the exchanges with (chat, audio conference, and forum). The use of simulation devices is less effective, because of the digital divide (cost access and low speed Internet, infrastructures decayed to the point). Furthermore, the level of structuring of the forums has a significant impact on the effectiveness of training. Forums of the type 2 (structured enough, 3 ≥ fn ≤ 6), presents a high intensity of cognitive/métacognitive’s messages, an initiative and reactive behavior. It is the reverse with the forums type 1 (little structured, fn ≤ 2), where the evaluative attitude and messages that are not directly related to learning are increase than others. It also appears that the performance of the students does not depend simply on the intensive use of tool of the digital tools, but of their self-determination, resulting in their feeling of new competences, the sources of motivation and the added-value of the devices to develop itself in company. It arises from axis 3 that the devices significantly impact the professional development of the teachers/tutors, with the changes of practices digital and a strong personal intention to explore new teaching practices remotely, and not of a commitment related to the managerial or institutional regulations, perceived like injunctions.Keys words: Impact of digital technologies, hybrid devices or FAD/e-Learning, training of engineers of LMD system, flexibility and effectiveness’s pedagogic, acts of language and training quality, practices innovating, professional development of trainer. Gillard, Hazel. "Narratives of ICT exclusion and inclusion : exploring tensions between policy, gender and network engineer training." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2006. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2801/.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the attempt by the British government and a US corporation, Cisco Systems Inc., to address the low participation of women in ICT fields. It draws from government documentation on women's inclusion and contextualises this policy within a wider analysis of socio-economic exclusion. Three related cultures of inclusion emerge which are linked to improving the nation's access to the new economy, and central to each is the reconfiguration of democratic citizenship for people classified as socially excluded. Incorporating Cisco's and academic perspectives on gender and technology relations, a phenomenological perspective is used to unravel the reality of this present day snapshot of social and ICT exclusion and inclusion, with the Heideggerian concept of 'Gestell' reformulated to include a neo-Marxist framework and a gender analysis. Adopting the methodological approach of narrative and feminist critical theory, the thesis describes three key backgrounds to the related ICT policies and strategies and matches each with the experiences of students and staff engaged in the case study of the Cisco Certified Network Associate, a network engineer training programme. In contrasting these macro and micro accounts, the thesis seeks to explore underlying sites of tension to show how policy and practice are often in opposition to one another. Motivated by the research question of whether ontological security arises from the equity model of inclusion for a subset of the socially excluded, lone women parents, it is suggested that it does not. With the appearance of social control and not personal empowerment, greater insecurity is argued to accrue. In providing this analytical and empirical approach, the thesis seeks to contribute to current research on gender and technology by widening its remit of investigation, and provide an innovative, multidisciplinary and critical perspective to IS research.

Thesis, Strasbourg, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012STRAA021.

Abstract:
The thesis aims to highlight the means implemented by the higher education system in America to maintain a dominant position in terms of research and innovation. It reports on strategies for recruiting and training U.S. universities mainly internationally oriented in terms of excellence. Assuming that the higher education structure in the form of a competitive market at a time of economic globalization, the thesis shows, through the prism of engineering schools and their students at Graduate redistribution multipolar market of higher education according to international tenders offered in particular by emerging powers (BRICS) modeled on the Anglo-Saxon model. The thesis shows how well these students are new actors-resources "nomadic" keepers of the economic development of nations by their ability to innovate. It therefore underlines the nesting of a regional plan for the different actors involved in economic development in this demonstration as taking the work of the sociology of organizations Crozier and Friedberg that the new institutionalism defended by P. Hall and R.Taylor. For all thesis emphasizes the stranglehold of the individual student in the choice of training after which a rational (Weber) will opt for the more interesting training according to the criteria that will be clean. This thesis sheds light on the importance of these students through technological innovation they bring to the American nation offering a decisive strategic advantage in the international balance of power. Similarly, it demonstrates the irreversibility of the system of American higher education and engineering schools to strengthen its international recruitment in a globalized context

Abstract:
In this thesis, we pursue two main objectives: compare the use of mathematics by engineers in their workplace with the mathematics training they receive in France, and propose innovative teaching that could bring training closer together to the needs revealed. We use the framework of the Anthropological Theory of Didactics and we begin by defining the notion of "mathematical praxeology" to analyse the mathematical activity of engineers in the institutions they attend. We classify in two categories the six types of praxeologies identified in the workplace: "proper" praxeologies (basics, statistics, specific) and "transversal" (modelling, reasoning, communication). In initial training in France, it seems that the bases and the reasoning are mainly taught in the preparatory cycle. In the engineering cycle, statistics and specific courses are most often offered, but the training seems to lack of applications and connections with the everyday reality of engineers.Faced with these observations, we propose the establishment, in the engineering cycle, of a Study and Research Path in statistics and chemistry. We observe that the generative question allows students to advance on a signed route while allowing them to develop exchanges along with their autonomy. This device seems to place future engineers in situations where mathematics play a leading role, offering a good approach to professional praxeologies

Abstract:
This thesis reports on research conducted between 2015 and 2019 at the Southwest Jiaotong University in China and in the Group of French Central Schools, on the preparation of Chinese engineering students for academic mobility in France. Based on empirically identified needs, the decision was made to focus on work meetings, which play a major role in engineeringschools but are still absent from the educational materials published in FOU.Within the framework of French for University Objectives (FUO), this research is comprised of two inseparable stages. The first is fieldwork conducted during one year, which allowed us to analyze the issues, communicative situations, and discourses within the curriculum of a Central School in Lyon, and to collect large amounts of video data related to work meetings. The data analysis was held up to the theoretical framework of FUO, which was partly put into question regarding the possibility of using existing data collected in the field as training materials for FUO.The second stage is the elaboration of a FUO program aimed at meeting the linguistic training needs of Chinese engineering students in relation to group work and work meetings in the Central School. This program was created from the data collected during the first stage. This thesis includes a reflection on a key aspect of French for Specific Objectives (FSO) and FUO, namely the feasibility and the study of the institutional roadblocks to the effective implementation of innovative programs aimed at improving the mobility of certain students

Abstract:
The need to expand the training of engineering students in order to develop new skills has been announced emphatically by several segments of society, as well as by the former students of these courses when they encounter the labor market. Thus, this PhD project falls within the scope of the Economics, Organizations and Knowledge Management research which investigates the processes of generation, modeling and measurement of knowledge transfer, and also studies the current scenario of engineering courses in Brazil, considering its various forms, researching the development of skills during the training process and the influence of active methodologies in the training of engineers. Professional training in any field requires ongoing training supported by actions that are based in knowledge management. The development of competencies, skills and attitudes should bring benefits to organizations, including increased productivity, knowledge preservation, improvement in the quality of decision-making, subsidies for organizational capacity and appreciation of the work. Whereas the predominant model in traditional engineering education has proved inadequate and insufficient for the professional\'s training with the expected profile, the purpose of this thesis was to identify the possible contributions of the use of active methodologies for the development of skills in engineer\'s training, from the perspective of a systemic view. The methodology used for the execution of the project was the use of literature and field research. The methodological framework was that of exploratory research with quantitative approach complementing the qualitative study using measurements made by the data collection tool built to survey the skills developed during the process of training engineering students, to ensure that the search result is applied. The research results suggest that application of fundamental knowledge in engineering, curiosity and ongoing learning, as well as the need to keep up to date on the world of engineering, teamwork and oral and written communication skills are abilities and competences that better develop during the formation process through the use of active learning methodologies. The main contribution of this study is on developing an instrument that integrates competencies, skills and active learning strategies that put students directly in contact with the professional reality and project development and solving engineering problems. The instrument designed for this filing is available and the registration of life experiences can generate a material for teachers concerned in working with the development of skills, in order to provide improvements to the quality of teaching and learning process in engineering.

Abstract:
The emergence of static warfare on the Western Front in late 1914, encouraged the reinvention of devices associated with siege warfare and the invention of hitherto unknown munitions. These munitions included hand and rifle grenades and trench mortars and their ammunition. At the outbreak of war, the British effectively possessed none of these devices and lacked an infrastructure by which they could be quickly designed, manufactured and supplied to the BEF. The British met this challenge with considerable success and the subsequent proliferation of trench warfare munitions had profound consequences for the evolution of British tactics on the Western Front. This thesis examines the processes by which these devices were invented, developed into manufacturable devices and supplied to the BEF. It considers their novelty in respect to similar devices from the American Civil War and the Russo-Japanese War. It looks at how their technical evolution affected tactical developments. The thesis discusses the relationship between the technical characteristics of these devices and the evolution of their tactical employment on the Western Front. It also considers how the characteristics of certain munitions, such as the Stokes mortar and the Mills grenade, directly effected tactics. It argues that the tactical employment of these munitions was dependent upon their functionality, utility and reliability. The present thesis provides a different model of trench warfare conducted by the British during the First World War and thereby demonstrates the significance of the novel munitions under discussion and the role they played in changing infantry warfare. This thesis also provides a different view of the Ministry of Munitions from that usually offered and argues that certain aspects of the Ministry’s role in providing the BEF with munitions has been overstated by virtue of its having underplayed the work of the War Office, while overlooking that conducted by the Royal Engineers in France.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis the major objective is the implementation of the inverse neural network concept in the design of printed lens (transmitarray) antenna. As it is computationally extensive to perform full-wave simulations for entire transmitarray structure and thereafter perform optimization, the idea is to generate a design database assuming that a unit cell of the transmitarray is situated inside a 2D infinite periodic structure. This way we generate a design database of transmission coefficient by varying the unit cell parameters. Since, for the actual design, we need dimensions for each cell on the transmitarray aperture and to do this we need to invert the design database. The major contribution of this thesis is the proposal and the implementation of database inversion methodology namely inverse neural network modelling. We provide the algorithms for carrying out the inversion process as well as provide check results to demonstrate the reliability of the proposed methodology. Finally, we apply this approach to design a transmitarray antenna, and measure its performance.

Rather it is concerned with how, from the point of view of the state, they may be contained and ultimately brought to a satisfactory resolution. The work is thus concerned with the practicalities of ending LIC. More specifically, the purpose of this research is to establish a framework of doctrinal and military principles applicable to the prevention and resolution of LIC. The principles of this thesis are based in numerous historical examples of LIC and six in depth case studies. These distilled principles are analysed in two central chapters, and are then applied in two latter defence force chapters so as to ensure there practicality and resilience. Numerous defence academics and military practitioners have been consulted in the production of this thesis; their contribution has further reinforced the functionality of the principles examined in this research. The research illustrates the criticality of a holistic approach to LIC. The function of this approach is to guarantee the stability of the sovereign state, by unifying civil, police, intelligence and military services. The effectiveness of the military elements must also be ensured, as military force is central to the suppression of LIC. Consequently, the research makes strategic and operational prescriptions, so as to improve the capability of defence forces that are concerned with preventing or resolving LIC.

Abstract:
The history of the watchmaking schools in Besançon is part of the birth and continuous development of a specific industry in a very limited sector of the French territory. When studying those schools we start at the « protoindustrial » time with its roots in the revolutionary ideals of 1793 and end up with the technological upheavals of electronics and the « quartz » technology in the 1970s. Three « schools » followed one another over the long term. Each school aimed at satisfying the demands of a watchmakng industry confronted to rapidly changing technical evolutions ; so it innovated in its own way by creating an original « corpus » in the students training and most of the time upset the practices and common ideas of the time. If the first two « schools » had a limited lifespan, the last one created in 1861 by the town council itself has been supporting the industrial growth of the city and the surrounding region. Since its foundation it has stuck to the industrial reality by placing the emphasis on high standards and opening new specific branches whenever necessary, thus answering the needs of firms always looking for highly qualified staff. For a large number of French people Besançon became the « capital town of the watchmaking industry » thanks to the shops or repair workshops kept by Besançon-trained former students all over France… It served as a background to set up research and university laboratories in the city : Observatoire Chronométrique, Ecole d’Ingénieurs, Centre d’Etudes Horlogères et de Développement Industriel (Cétéhor)… It contributed to the industrial diversification of the town in fields related to watchmaking such as mechanical cutting, micromechanics, equipment and microtechniques. It was nationalized in 1891 and then belonged to the very small elite goup of the Professional National Schools that influenced the future industrial development of the country. In 1933 it moved into sparkling-new premises and was acknowledged as the flagship of technical education in France : it offered a large number of innovating courses ranging from the skilled worker to the engineer and was granted the latest equipments in every field. The path of this new school also enhanced a « humane » and « prosopographical » history ; it highlighted the part played by the numerous former students who created their own successful businesses. Being faithful to their old school they contributed to the renown and economic growth and prosperity of the city and its region… Beyond the local impact we must regard the history of the watchmaking schools as an important part of the history of Technical Education in France. To meet the needs of a soaring watchmaking industry they opened the way to the transfer of professional training from apprenticeship in workshops with its observed shortcomings to education in technical high schools. Their pedagogical innovations, the strong support of their former students created a vital school-business link that still lives on in the collective memory of the town inhabitants. In 1974 its name changed to Lycée Jules Haag thus losing any reference to watchmaking. Let us now try and understand the strong influence and success of those watchmaking schools, the active part they played in the economic industrial prosperity of a town and its surrounding region…

"Responsible Innovation and Sustainability: Interventions in Education and Training of Scientists and Engineers." Doctoral diss., 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.38377.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Three dilemmas plague governance of scientific research and technological innovation: the dilemma of orientation, the dilemma of legitimacy, and the dilemma of control. The dilemma of orientation risks innovation heedless of long-term implications. The dilemma of legitimacy grapples with delegation of authority in democracies, often at the expense of broader public interest. The dilemma of control poses that the undesirable implications of new technologies are hard to grasp, yet once grasped, all too difficult to remedy. That humanity has innovated itself into the sustainability crisis is a prime manifestation of these dilemmas. Responsible innovation (RI), with foci on anticipation, inclusion, reflection, coordination, and adaptation, aims to mitigate dilemmas of orientation, legitimacy, and control. The aspiration of RI is to bend the processes of technology development toward more just, sustainable, and societally desirable outcomes. Despite the potential for fruitful interaction across RI’s constitutive domains—sustainability science and social studies of science and technology—most sustainability scientists under-theorize the sociopolitical dimensions of technological systems and most science and technology scholars hesitate to take a normative, solutions-oriented stance. Efforts to advance RI, although notable, entail one-off projects that do not lend themselves to comparative analysis for learning. In this dissertation, I offer an intervention research framework to aid systematic study of intentional programs of change to advance responsible innovation. Two empirical studies demonstrate the framework in application. An evaluation of Science Outside the Lab presents a program to help early-career scientists and engineers understand the complexities of science policy. An evaluation of a Community Engagement Workshop presents a program to help engineers better look beyond technology, listen to and learn from people, and empower communities. Each program is efficacious in helping scientists and engineers more thoughtfully engage with mediators of science and technology governance dilemmas: Science Outside the Lab in revealing the dilemmas of orientation and legitimacy; Community Engagement Workshop in offering reflexive and inclusive approaches to control. As part of a larger intervention research portfolio, these and other projects hold promise for aiding governance of science and technology through responsible innovation.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 will cover the general background on training outside and inside Eskom. It will scrutinise the existing training programme taking into account the factors that inform this training. An assessment will also be made of the training strategy that the CED is already using. Chapter 2 will present an in-depth literature review that will serve as a guide in scrutinising training and development of the organisation and the staff. The literature in question covers coaching, mentoring, staff development, communication as a factor of training, induction, orientation, skills sharing, training evaluation, training objectives, job rotation, and skills knowledge. This literature will allow me to compare training in Eskom with that which is suggested from the literature review. This will be done in order to recommend solutions for training strategy problems in the CED. Studies touching on training have been undertaken in the past and this dissertation will also make use of them as references. Chapter 3 describes the research methodology used and the method of data collection. The three groups of staff that have been used to obtain data in the CED Camden Power Station, namely, discipline engineering managers, senior engineers and graduates in training, are also discussed. Chapter 4 presents the data analysis. All the data obtained from questionnaires and literature is analysed here. The analysis makes use of pie charts to analyse the data obtained from the respondents. Chapter 5 covers recommendations and conclusions. Recommendations are made based on responses to the research questionnaires. Research questionnaires that were used to obtain data are in the appendices.

Abstract:
The commercial space industry is facing a shortage of qualified workers due to the aging and retirements of the workforce and the inability to find sufficient candidates who can meet the security requirements. Additionally, technically qualified individuals are also looking to other industries instead of space. The needs of the industry, and for manufacturing engineers specifically, are not well understood. In order to better understand and satisfy the needs of industry and for manufacturing engineers, the purpose and objective of this study was to explore the training, educational experiences, and technical competencies of entry-level manufacturing engineers. All the participants in the study had worked as a manufacturing engineer in the commercial space industry. There were five expert level and three entry-level manufacturing engineers (n = 8). Expert-level manufacturing engineers had at least three years of experience and entry-level manufacturing engineers had less than three years of experience. This qualitative descriptive study involved interviewing the participants to explore their experiences. Six themes emerged from the findings and included: (a) mentoring used as a teaching tool, (b) you’re going to be doing pretty good, (c) worst case is millions of lives, (d) understand, be familiar, or proficient, (e) the interpreter or the bridge between the design engineer and the shop floor, and (f) the storyteller or make your data tell a story.

The safety in aviation is the most important issue that we all concern about since the aircraft have been developed and become more complicated recently with the high technology been used and equipped onboard the aircraft. The person who maintains the aircraft is maintaining the same but requiring a higher skill and more capable competences to ensure the aircraft is safe for dispatch. In according to the adoption of Taiwan Aviation License Standard from FAA Part-65 to EASA Part-66, the training specifications for Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) and its requirements of competences are more strictly required to be standardized into training courses and authorized procedures theoretically and practically. So that the aircraft repair station will need to meet the requirements of the aviation regulations to enhance the ability and qualification of handling and maintaining the aircraft for their maintenance personnel on the specific assigned and authorized tasks. The Aircraft Maintenance Engineer with License will need to receive aircraft maintenance experiences practically, be trained as a skilled person, completed a specific aircraft type training (theoretical and practical courses), and be evaluated for the competences and be authorized by the repair station to gain the privilege for the Certification of Return to Service (CRS) on the type he/she is authorized. The practical experiences, skilled training, type training, competences evaluation and authorization procedures are required to be standardized and based on the requirements of aviation regulations to set up and define all the detailed procedures with documents. This is the purpose of my thesis. In addition, the core concept of this training program can be transferred into departments of organization to train the department members theoretically and practically. This idea can also work for the school (college, vocational/high school) to educate the students before they join the aviation industry which can reduce the period of time in training. Furthermore, this training program can assist the students to gain the basic skills that required in the career and help them to cope with the career after graduation. Finally, Taiwan’s competition among the aviation can be increased accordingly due to the enhancement of capabilities and qualifications of Aircraft maintenance engineers through this high standard and detailed process training program.
