Sullivan, Mark D. Seeking the Roots of Health and Action in Biological Autonomy. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780195386585.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
The roots of biological autonomy and health are the same. Goals make biology distinct as a science, for without goals, we cannot understand why a biological trait exists. Organisms are autonomous biological entities because they define what is inside and what is outside themselves. This boundary between inner and outer gives the organism a self-referential purpose. Claude Bernard made experimental physiology possible with his concept of the internal environment, but he was unable to explain how the organism established the boundary between itself and its environment. Hence, homeostasis portrays the organism as reactive not active. Autopoiesis is an alternative defining characteristic of living beings. It generates biological autonomy through additional biological constraint on chemical processes, not through a special vital force. Healthy organisms can construct their own environmental niche. For humans, this niche is social and is constructed with a social physiology. Both exercise and education increase health by increasing capacity for niche construction.

Abstract:
This chapter explains how the surging discontent described in the previous chapter morphs into a full-blown crisis. The remarkable expression of elite accommodation between Laurent-Désiré Kabila, Army Chief of Staff James Kabarebe and Joseph Kabila, son of the head of state, protégé of Kabarebe and number two in the military hierarchy, began to unravel in early 1998. As the father–president relentlessly sought to increase his political autonomy, he pursued two policies by stealth that inflamed tensions with the RPF: Katangization—the infiltration of the security services and the state bureaucracy by fellow Katangese—and the courting of new allies, not least Tanzania which gave him a bodyguard to replace his Rwandese minders and which sent troops to secretly train a parallel army in Katanga. Relations between the comrades became so poisoned that even Council of Ministers' meetings were preceded by arms searches.

Cholbi, Michael. Dignity and Assisted Dying. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190675967.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
Although Kant was generally opposed to suicide, many contemporary ethicists invoke recognizably Kantian notions, including dignity and autonomy, in their defense of assisted dying or “death with dignity.” This chapter sorts out what Kant’s understanding of dignity implies about assisted dying. Kant’s understanding of dignity as rooted in practically rational agency distinguishes his account of dignity as a trait that is universal, unified, equal, and inalienable and that entails a duty of self-preservation as fundamental to respecting rational agency. Nevertheless, Kant’s arguments do not establish an obligation to forego suicide (and hence, an obligation on the part of others not to assist in suicide) in each and every case. Although Kant’s notion of dignity cannot be deployed to defend a broad permission for suicide akin to that favored by the “death with dignity” movement, it also does not entail as restrictive a stance on morally permissible suicide or on assisted dying.
