Abstract:
Une grande majorité (85%) des ponts français a une portée inférieure à 50 m. Pour ce type d’ouvrage d’art, la charge de trafic peut être déterminante pour la conception et le recalcul. Or, en Europe, le fret routier a augmenté de 36.2% entre 1995 et 2010, et la croissance annuelle du volume transporté par la route a été évaluée à 1.7% entre 2005 et 2030. Il est donc essentiel de s’assurer que les infrastructures européennes sont en mesure de répondre à cette demande croissante en capacité structurelle des ouvrages. Pour les ouvrages neufs, les modèles de trafic dans les normes ou les législations pour la conception des ponts incluent une marge de sécurité suffisante pour que la croissance du trafic soit prise en compte sans dommage par ces ouvrages. Mais pour les ouvrages existants, la résistance structurelle aux trafics actuels et futur est à vérifier et une priorisation des mesures doit être faite pour assurer leur intégrité structurelle et leur sécurité. De plus, afin de préserver leur infrastructure tout en ne menaçant pas leur compétitivité nationale, certains pays réfléchissent à l’introduction de poids lourds plus longs, plus lourds, ce qui permet de réduire le nombre de véhicules pour un volume ou un tonnage donné, ainsi que d’autres coûts (d’essence, de travail, ..), ce qui justifie encore plus les calculs effectués. Pour répondre à ce genre de problématique, différentes méthodes d’extrapolation ont déjà été utilisées pour modéliser les effets extrêmes du trafic, afin de déterminer les effets caractéristiques pour de grandes périodes de retour. Parmi celles-ci nous pouvons citer l’adaptation d’une gaussienne ou d’une loi de Gumbel sur la queue de distribution empirique, la formule de Rice appliquée à l’histogramme des dépassements de niveaux, la méthode des maxima par blocs ou celle des dépassements de seuils élevés. Les fondements et les utilisations faites de ces méthodes pour modéliser les effets extrêmes du trafic sur les ouvrages sont donnés dans un premier chapitre. De plus, une comparaison quantitative entre ces méthodes est réalisée. Deux études sont présentées, l’une basée sur un échantillon numérique et l’autre sur un échantillon réaliste d’effets du trafic. L’erreur induite par ces méthodes est évaluée à l’aide d’indicatifs statistiques simples, comme l’écart-type et les moindres carrés, évalués sur les valeurs caractéristiques et les probabilités de rupture. Nos conclusions sont, qu’en général, les méthodes sont moins précises lorsqu’il s’agit de déterminer des probabilités de rupture que lorsqu’elles cherchent des valeurs caractéristiques. Mais la raison peut en être les faibles probabilités recherchées (10-6 par an). De plus, bien qu’aucune méthode n’ait réalisée des extrapolations de manière correcte, les meilleures sont celles qui s’intéressent aux queues de probabilités, et en particulier des dépassements au-dessus d’un seuil élevé. Ainsi une étude de cette dernière méthode est réalisée : en effet, cette méthode, nommé "dépassements d’un seuil élevé", considère que les valeurs au-dessus d’un seuil correctement choisi, assez élevé, suit une distribution de Pareto généralisée (GPD). Cette méthode est utilisée de manière intensive dans les domaines de l’hydrologie et la finance, mais non encore appliquée dans le domaine des effets du trafic sur les ouvrages. Beaucoup de facteurs influencent le résultat lorsqu’on applique cette méthode, comme la quantité et la qualité des données à notre disposition, les critères utilisés pour déterminer les pics indépendants, l’estimation des paramètres et le choix du seuil. C’est pour cette raison qu’une étude et une comparaison des différentes méthodes d’estimation des paramètres de la distribution GPD sont effectuées : les conditions, hypothèses, avantages et inconvénients des différentes méthodes sont listés. Différentes méthodes sont ainsi étudiées, telles la méthode des moments (MM), la méthode des moments à poids (PWM), le maximum de vraisemblance (ML), le maximum de vraisemblance pénalisé (PML), le minimum de la densité de la divergence (MDPD), la méthode des fractiles empiriques (EPM), la statistique du maximum d’adaptation et la vraisemblance des moments (LM). Pour comparer ces méthodes, des échantillons numériques, des effets de trafic simulés par Monte Carlo et des effets mesurés sur un ouvrage réel sont utilisés. Comme prévu, les méthodes ont des performances différentes selon l’échantillon considéré. Néanmoins, pour des échantillons purement numériques, MM et PWM sont recommandées pour des distributions à paramètre de forme négatif et des échantillons de petite taille (moins de 200 valeurs). ML est conseillé pour des distributions à paramètre de forme positif. Pour des effets du trafic simulés, ML et PML donne des valeurs de retour plus correctes lorsque le nombre de valeurs au-dessus du seuil est supérieur à 100 ; dans le cas contraire, MM et PWM sont conseillés. De plus, comme c’est prouvé dans l’étude de valeurs réelles mesurées, les valeurs a priori aberrantes ("outliers") ont une influence notable sur le résultat et toutes les méthodes sont moins performantes. Comme cela a été montré dans la littérature, ces "outliers" proviennent souvent du mélange de deux distributions, qui peuvent être deux sous-populations. Dans le cas de l’effet du trafic sur les ouvrages, cela peut être la raison d’une estimation des paramètres non correcte. Les articles existant sur le sujet soulignent le fait que les effets du trafic sont dus à des chargements indépendants, qui correspondant au nombre de véhicules impliqués. Ils ne suivent pas la même distribution, ce qui contredit l’hypothèse classique en théorie des valeurs extrêmes que les événements doivent être indépendants et identiquement distribués. Des méthodes permettant de prendre en compte ce point et utilisant des distributions mélangées (exponentielles ou valeurs extrêmes généralisées) ont été proposées dans la littérature pour modéliser les effets du trafic. Nous proposons une méthode similaire, que nous appelons dépassement de seuils mélangés, afin de tenir des différentes distributions sous-jacentes dans l’échantillon tout en appliquant à chacune d’entre elles la méthode des dépassements de seuil. Pour des ponts ayant des portées supérieures à 50 m, le scénario déterminant est celui de la congestion, qui n’est pas ce qui est étudié ici. De plus, le trafic n’est pas la composante déterminante pour la conception des ponts de longue portée. Mais des problèmes de fatigue peuvent apparaître dans certains ponts, tels les ponts métalliques à dalle orthotrope, où l’étude du trafic peut devenir nécessaire. Ainsi nous avons fait une étude de l’influence de la position des véhicules sur le phénomène de fatigue. Pour cela, quatre fichiers de trafic réels, mesurés en 2010 et 2011 par quatre stations de pesage différentes, ont été utilisés. Ils ont mis à jour des comportements latéraux différents d’une station à l’autre. Si nous les appliquons au viaduc de Millau, qui est un pont métallique à haubans et à dalle orthotrope, nous voyons que l’histogramme des effets et l’effet de fatigue cumulé est beaucoup affecté par le comportement latéral des véhicules. Ainsi, des études approfondies utilisant les éléments finis pour modéliser les ouvrages et des enregistrements de trafic réel, peuvent être utilisées pour pré-déterminer quels éléments, donc quelles soudures, doivent être examinés dans les ponts afin d’estimer leur santé structurelle.

Abstract:
The advent of trends such as virtualization, cloud computing, IoT and BYOD has increased the traffic loads on modern enterprise and data-center networks. As the requirements on today’s networks increase, newer designs and solutions have sprout forth. Software-Defined Networking was developed to cater to the needs of modern networks and to improve traffic handling among other things. This study focuses on the ways SDN, specifically the OpenFlow standard, can be used to load-balance and increase the network throughput, in comparison to traditional methods such as Equal-Cost Load-Balancing. This was done by creating a test environment with the network emulator Mininet, and by creating load-balancing programs. The load-balancers were created using the OpenFlow protocol. These programs were used together with the Floodlight controller and were compared in the same environment. The results showed that the bandwidth load-balancer outperformed the Equal-Cost Load-Balancer.

Abstract:
The objective of this research was to investigate, develop and evaluate dynamic load-balancing strategies for parallel execution of microscopic road traffic simulations. Urban road traffic simulation presents irregular, and dynamically varying distributed computational load for a parallel processor system. The dynamic nature of road traffic simulation systems lead to uneven load distribution during simulation, even for a system that starts off with even load distributions. Load balancing is a potential way of achieving improved performance by reallocating work from highly loaded processors to lightly loaded processors leading to a reduction in the overall computational time. In dynamic load balancing, workloads are adjusted continually or periodically throughout the computation. In this thesis load balancing strategies were evaluated and some load balancing policies developed. A load index and a profitability determination algorithms were developed. These were used to enhance two load balancing algorithms. One of the algorithms exhibits local communications and distributed load evaluation between the neighbour partitions (diffusion algorithm) and the other algorithm exhibits both local and global communications while the decision making is centralized (MaS algorithm). The enhanced algorithms were implemented and synthesized with a research parallel traffic simulation. The performance of the research parallel traffic simulator, optimized with the two modified dynamic load balancing strategies were studied.

Abstract:

The work presented in this thesis studies the load and loadeffects of traffic loads on railway bridges. The increasedknowledge of the traffic loads, simulated using fieldmeasurements of actual trains, are employed in a reliabilityanalysis in an attempt at upgrading existing railwaybridges.

The study utilises data from a weigh-in-motion site whichrecords, for each train, the train speed, the loads from eachaxle and the axle spacings. This data of actual trainconfigurations and axle loads are portrayed as moving forcesand then used in computer simulations of trains crossing twodimensional simply supported bridges at constant speed. Onlysingle track short to medium span bridges are considered in thethesis. The studied load effect is the moment at mid-span. Fromthe computer simulations the moment history at mid-span isobtained.

The load effects are analysed by two methods, the first isthe classical extreme value theory where the load effect ismodelled by the family of distributions called the generalisedextreme value distribution (GEV). The other method adopts thepeaks-over-threshold method (POT) where the limiting family ofdistributions for the heights to peaks-over-threshold is theGeneralised Pareto Distribution (GPD). The two models aregenerally found to be a good representation of the data.

The load effects modelled by either the GEV or the GPD arethen incorporated into a reliability analysis in order to studythe possibility of raising allowable axle loads on existingSwedish railway bridges. The results of the reliabilityanalysis show that they are sensitive to the estimation of theshape parameter of the GEV or the GPD.

While the study is limited to the case of the ultimate limitstate where the effects of fatigue are not accounted for, thefindings show that for the studied cases an increase inallowable axle load to 25 tonnes would be acceptable even forbridges built to the standards of 1940 and designed to LoadModel A of that standard. Even an increase to both 27.5 and 30tonnes appears to be possible for certain cases. It is alsoobserved that the short span bridges ofapproximately fourmetres are the most susceptible to a proposed increase inpermissible axle load.

During the last decade, the Internet usage has been growing at an enormous rate which has beenaccompanied by the developments of network applications (e.g., video conference, audio/videostreaming, E-learning, E-Commerce and real-time applications) and allows several types ofinformation including data, voice, picture and media streaming. While end-users are demandingvery high quality of service (QoS) from their service providers, network undergoes a complex trafficwhich leads the transmission bottlenecks. Considerable effort has been made to study thecharacteristics and the behavior of the Internet. Simulation modeling of computer networkcongestion is a profitable and effective technique which fulfills the requirements to evaluate theperformance and QoS of networks. To simulate a single congested link, simulation is run with asingle load generator while for a larger simulation with complex traffic, where the nodes are spreadacross different geographical locations generating distributed artificial loads is indispensable. Onesolution is to elaborate a load generation system based on master/slave architecture.

Abstract:
Wide area cellular mobile networks have rapidly evolved over the years. In the beginning achieving wide area coverage was a great achievement – enabling subscribers to call from wherever they were currently located and whenever they wanted. Additionally these systems supported mobility of subscribers, so that calls could continue even while a subscriber moved from one cell to another. Today mobility management is something everyone takes for granted. New functionality is continuously being developed for these networks. An important aspect of this evolution has been to enable new applications and technologies to be introduced while maintaining interoperability with the existing technologies. These mobile networks use new technologies and enable new applications, but they interconnect with existing networks that utilize earlier technologies, such as the existing fixed telephone network. These interconnections enable communication between subscribers connected via all of these networks. In today’s mobile networks there are a variety of technologies working side by side, for example 2G, GPRS, 3G, and so on. The earlier networks used circuit switching technology, but the trend in later networks was to transition exclusively to packet switching. One of the most important network entities is the mobile switch center (MSC). In the earlier circuit switched networks the MSC is the heart of the circuit switching network. The MSC is responsible for management, control, and communication to and from the mobile stations (MSs) in the area managed by the MSC. The MSC stores information about each of the MSs in one or more databases. In the subscriber’s home network the information about their subscription is stored in a home location register (HLR), while when this subscriber is in another network information is stored in a visitor location register (VLR). The MSC together with other elements of the core network handles mobility management, enabling both handover and roaming. A gateway MSC enables MSs to communicate with phones connected to the fixed network. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the traffic situation for Kulyab region in order to configure and install the MSC in Kulyab. For the time being there is no radio network controller (RNC) in Kulyab region, so the MSC in Kulyab will be configured to support 2G traffic. The configuration will be based on the expected mobile traffic load in the Kulyab region, thus the first steps in the process were to collect and analyze data about the existing traffic in this region that is currently served by a MSC located outside of this region. The configuration of the new MSC will be based on this analysis. After installing and configuring the new MSC some question need to be answered, namely: Can the MSC in Kulyab support all the base stations in Kulyab region? If not, how many base stations can it support? To what extent does the addition of this new MSC improve the overall network in terms of increased reliability, capacity, and throughput? How much will the capacity of the existing MSC, that is responsible for traffic outside Dushanbe, be increased due to the introduction of the new MSC?

Att uppnå den mobila täckningen var i början en stor prestation – att kunna erbjuda telefontjänster för abonnenterna var än de befann sig och när de ville. Förutom detta så stödde detta system också fri rörlighet för abonnenterna. Under ett samtal kunde de förflytta sig från en cell till ett annan utan att samtalet bröts. Nu är mobilitetshanteringen någonting självklart. Nya funktioner utvecklas ständigt för dessa nätverk. En viktig aspekt för utvecklingen är att möjliggöra så att nya applikationer och teknologier kan introduceras och fortfarande vara kompatibla med de existerande teknikerna. Dessa mobilnätverk använder nya tekniker och möjliggör nya applikationer som är kompatibla med det existerande nätverket. Det existerande nätverket använder sig av tidigare teknologier, så som den fasta telefonnätet. Detta möjliggör kommunikation mellan abonnenterna från olika nätverk. I dagens nätverk finns det ett antal olika nätverk, som t.ex. 2G, GPRS, 3G och så vidare. Det tidigare nätverket använde sig av kretskopplad teknik, men trenden är attuteslutande använda sig av paketkopplad teknik. En av de viktigaste nätverksenheterna är ”Mobile switch center” (MSC). I de tidigare kretskopplade nätverket är MSC hjärtat i det kretskopplade nätverket. MSC är ansvarig för hanteringen, kontrollen och kommunikation till och från demobila enheterna (MS) i området som kontrolleras av MSCn. MSC lagrar information om var och en av MS i ett eller flera databaser. I abonnentens hemnätverk finns information om abonnentens abonnemang i ett hemregister (HLR). När abonnenten befinner sig i ett annat nätverk lagras informationen i ett gästregister (VLR). MSC hanterar mobilitet tillsammans med andra nätverksenheter i ”Core network” (CN) och möjliggör överlämnande (handover) och roaming. ”Gateway MSC” GMSC möjliggör kommunikation mellan MS och det fasta nätverket. Syftet med examensarbetet är att analysera trafiken för Kulyab-regionen för att konfigurera och installera en MSC i Kulyab. För tillfället finns ingen ”Radio network controller” (RNC) i regionen Kulyab, så MSCn i Kulyab kommer att konfigureras för att stödja 2G trafik. Konfigurationen baseras på den förväntade belastningen av mobiltrafiken i Kulyab-regionen, följaktligen är det första steget i processen att samla ihop och analysera information om den existerande trafiken i Kulyab-regionen. Trafiken tillhörande Kulyab-regionen handskas för närvarande av en MSC som befinner sig utanför detta område. Konfigurationen av den nya MSCn kommer att baseras på denna analys. Efter installationen och konfigurationen av den nya MSCn kommer följande frågor att bli besvarade, nämligen: Kan MSCn i Kulyab stödja alla basstationerna i Kulyab regionen? Om inte, hur många basstationer kan MSCn stödja? Till vilken grad kommer den nya MSCn att förbättra nätverket i termer av ökad tillförlitlighet, kapacitet och trafikgenomströmning? Hur mycket kommer kapacitetsökningen för den existerande MSC utanför Dushanbe att öka då MSC i Kulyab installeras?

Abstract:
Layer 4-7 network functions (NF), such as Firewall or NAPT, have traditionally been implemented in specialized hardware with little to no programmability and extensibility. The scientific community has focused on realizing this functionality in software running on commodity servers instead. Despite the many advancements over the years (e.g., network I/O accelerations), software-based NFs are still unable to guarantee some key service-level objectives (e.g., bounded latency) for the customer due to their reactive approach to workload changes. This thesis argues that Machine Learning techniques can be utilized to forecast how traffic patterns change over time. A network orchestrator can then use this information to allocate resources (network, compute, memory) in a timely fashion and more precisely. To this end, we have developed Mantis, a control plane network application which (i) monitors all forwarding devices (e.g., Firewalls) to generate performance-related metrics and (ii) applies predictors (moving average, autoregression, wavelets, etc.) to predict future values for these metrics. Choosing the appropriate forecasting technique for each traffic workload is a challenging task. This is why we developed several different predictors. Moreover, each predictor has several configuration parameters which can all be set by the administrator during runtime. In order to evaluate the predictive capabilities of Mantis, we set up a test-bed, consisting of the state-of-the-art network controller Metron [16], a NAPT NF realized in FastClick [6] and two hosts. While the source host was replaying real-world internet traces (provided by CAIDA [33]), our Mantis application was performing predictions in real time, using a rolling window for training. Visual inspection of the results indicates that all our predictors have good accuracy, excluding (i) the beginning of the trace where models are still being initialized and (ii) instances of abrupt change. Moreover, applying the discrete wavelet transform before we perform predictions can improve the accuracy further.
Nätverksfunktioner i lager 4-7 som t.ex. brandväggar eller NAPT har traditionellt implementeras på specialdesignad hårdvara med väldigt få programeringsegenskaper. Forskning inom datakomunikation har fokuserat på att istället möjliggöra dessa funktioner i mjukvara på standardhårdvara. Trots att många framsteg har gjorts inom området under de senaste åren (t.ex. nätverks I/O accelerering), kan inte mjukvarubaserade nätverksfunktioner garantera önskad tjänstenivå för kunderna (t.ex. begränsade latensvärden) p.g.a. det reaktiva tillvägagångsättet när arbetslasten ändras. Den här avhandlingen visar att med hjälp av maskininlärning så går det att förutse hur trafikflöden ändras över tid. Nätverksorkestrering kan sedan användas för att allokera resurser (bandbredd, beräkning, minne) i förväg samt mer precist. För detta ändamål har vi utvecklat Mantis, en nätverksapplikation i kontrolplanet som övervakar alla nätverksenheter för att generera prestandabaserade mätvärden och använder matematiska prediktorer (moving average, autoregression, wavelets, o.s.v.) för att förutse kommande ändringar i dessa värden. Det är en utmaning att välja rätt metod för att skapa prognosen för varje resurs. Därför har vi utvecklat flera olika prediktorer. Dessutom har varje prediktor flera konfigurationsvärden som kan ändras av administratören. För att utvärdera Mantis prognoser har vi satt upp ett testnätverk med en av marknadens ledande nätverkskontrollers, Metron [16], en NAPT nätverksfunktion implementerad med FastClick [6] och två testnoder. Den ena noden skickar data hämtad från verklig Internettrafik (erhållen från CAIDA [33]) samtidigt som vår applikation, Mantis, skapar prognoser i realtid. Manuell inspektion av resultaten tyder på att alla våra prediktorer har god precision, förutom början av en spårning då modellerna byggs upp eller vid abrupt ändring. Dessutom kan precisionen ökas ytterligare genom att använda diskret wavelet transformering av värdena innan prognosen görs.

Abstract:
The primary aims of this thesis are to develop a realistic probabilistic model of extreme traffic load-effects (referred to as a Probabilistic Model), which could be used for a reliability—based assessment of the safety of existing bridges, and to develop a model that provides an efficient approximation (without significant computational difficulties) for the Probabilistic Model (referred to as an Approximate Model). The research focuses on the analysis of traffic load-effects estimated from Weigh-in-Motion data by calculating hypothetical load-effects that would be induced by each vehicle. Considerations are given to single-span simply—supported and typical three—span continuous bridges with main span lengths up to 40 m, and the load—effect results are used as the basis for calibrating realistic probabilistic models proposed in this research. A preliminary assessment scheme is developed to determine the quality of WIM data, including a rational method to assist in accepting or rejecting daily data records. A key feature is to inspect the data for consistency of the average daily single steer axle mass distributions for selected vehicle patterns. Visual inspection of graphs of statistical distributions is also essential for WIM data with significant temporal variations. The site-specific traffic characteristics for each WIM site that can be derived from the obtained WIM data are examined and presented. A simulation study on theoretical static peak load-effects given by the obtained WIM data was conducted in order to analyse frequency distributions of normalised peak load-effects, normalised with respect to ‘characteristic values’. For peak load—effects normalised with respect to the corresponding 99th percentile peak load-effects (as characteristic values), it was found in general that the extreme normalised peak loadeffect distributions (exceeding the load-effect thresholds) were essentially the same for all load-effects. The peak load-effects normalised with respect to the corresponding peak load-effects given by the T44 design load were also examined and it was found that the T44 design load did not provide a good representation of the critical vehicles for the traffic loads considered. A Probabilistic Model that can be used effectively to approximate all distributions of extreme normalised peak load-effects is developed to describe the distributions given by general vehicles. The Probabilistic Models include an upper limit on the maximum load-effect, and the models were validated by comparing with the distributions of theoretical load-effects obtained from the WIM data. Furthermore, for selected cases, they were also compared with extrapolations of extreme normalised peak load—effects based on approximate Normal probability distributions. The resultant distributions show that the Probabilistic Models provide an efficient basis to approximately describe the distributions for WIM data without a large proportion of heavily overloaded C10 (1-2-2-2) vehicles. An example is provided for a case in which the extreme normalised peak loadeffect distribution is not accurately described by a Normal probability distribution, whereas sufficient accuracy is provided by a Probabilistic Model calibrated specifically for this load-effect distribution. Extreme value distributions corresponding to sample sizes of 1 million and 100 million vehicles were derived from the Probabilistic Models and the Normal probability approximations for selected cases, and differences between these extreme value distributions were inspected to study the effect of the upper limits of the Probabilistic Models. Finally, validation of the Approximate Models was carried out for selected cases by comparing with the Probabilistic Models and the distributions obtained from WIM data. An approximate threshold value for the Approximate Model is given by a characteristic truck model capable of predicting the threshold values for all load-effects. This truck model is based simply on the GVM information fiom the WIM data. Satisfactory results were obtained from the characteristic truck model for describing threshold values for all bridge types and all load-effects, using a very simple method, and the threshold value estimation was most accurate for bridges with long main span lengths. The accuracy of the Approximate Model depends on the accuracy of the characteristic truck model to estimate the threshold values. For selected cases, it has been found that the Approximate Models provide an efficient and reasonably accurate basis to approximate the distributions obtained from WIM data and the detailed Probabilistic Models developed in this research.

Monitoring and mining real-time network data streams are crucial operations for managing and operating data networks. The information that network operators desire to extract from the network traffic is of different size, granularity and accuracy depending on the measurement task (e.g., relevant data for capacity planning and intrusion detection are very different). To satisfy these different demands, a new class of monitoring systems is emerging to handle multiple and arbitrary monitoring applications. Such systems must inevitably cope with the effects of continuous overload situations due to the large volumes, high data rates and bursty nature of the network traffic. These overload situations can severely compromise the accuracy and effectiveness of monitoring systems, when their results are most valuable to network operators. In this thesis, we propose a technique called load shedding as an effective and low-cost alternative to over-provisioning in network monitoring systems. It allows these systems to handle efficiently overload situations in the presence of multiple, arbitrary and competing monitoring applications. We present the design and evaluation of a predictive load shedding scheme that can shed excess load in front of extreme traffic conditions and maintain the accuracy of the monitoring applications within bounds defined by end users, while assuring a fair allocation of computing resources to non-cooperative applications. The main novelty of our scheme is that it considers monitoring applications as black boxes, with arbitrary (and highly variable) input traffic and processing cost. Without any explicit knowledge of the application internals, the proposed scheme extracts a set of features from the traffic streams to build an on-line prediction model of the resource requirements of each monitoring application, which is used to anticipate overload situations and control the overall resource usage by sampling the input packet streams. This way, the monitoring system preserves a high degree of flexibility, increasing the range of applications and network scenarios where it can be used. Since not all monitoring applications are robust against sampling, we then extend our load shedding scheme to support custom load shedding methods defined by end users, in order to provide a generic solution for arbitrary monitoring applications. Our scheme allows the monitoring system to safely delegate the task of shedding excess load to the applications and still guarantee fairness of service with non-cooperative users. We implemented our load shedding scheme in an existing network monitoring system and deployed it in a research ISP network. We present experimental evidence of the performance and robustness of our system with several concurrent monitoring applications during long-lived executions and using real-world traffic traces.

With the growing popularity of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), modern enterprise Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) deployments always consist of multiple Access Points (APs) to meet the fast-increasing demand for wireless access. In order to avoid network congestion which leads to issues such as suboptimal Quality of Service (QoS) and degraded user Quality of Experience (QoE), intelligent network traffic control is needed. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging architecture and intensively discussed as one of the most promising technologies to simplify network management and service development. In the SDN architecture, network management is directly programmable because it is decoupled from forwarding layer. Leveraging SDN to the existing enterprise WLANs framework, network services can be flexibly implemented to support intelligent network traffic control. This thesis studies the architecture of software-defined enterprise WLANs and how to improve network traffic control from a client-side and an AP-side perspective. By extending an existing software-defined enterprise WLANs framework, two adaptive algorithms are proposed to provide client-based mobility management and load balancing. Custom protocol messages and AP load metric are introduced to enable the proposed adaptive algorithms. Moreover, a software-defined enterprise WLAN system is designed and implemented on a testbed. A load-aware automatic channel switching algorithm and a QoS-aware bandwidth control algorithm are proposed to achieve AP-based network traffic control. Experimental results from the testbed show that the designed system and algorithms significantly improve the performance of traffic control in enterprise WLANs in terms of network throughput, packet loss rate, transmission delay and jitter.

The data in this work consists of 4G cellular trafficdata spanning over a 7 day coherent period, collected from cells in a moderately largecity. The proposed method in this work is ARIMA modeling, in both original formand with an extension where the coefficients of the ARIMA model are re-esimated byintroducing some user characteristic variables. The re-estimated coefficients produceslightly lower forecast errors in general than a isolated ARIMA model where thevolume forecasts only depends on time. This implies that the forecasts can besomewhat improved when we allow the influence of these variables to be a part ofthe model, and not only the time series itself.

Abstract:
To understand which factors affect the perception of stress while driving is interesting since it would help us to get closer to comprehending how the street network design can avoid putting stress on the drivers. Earlier research has measured drivers’ perception of safety under different street conditions by using video clips of real street environments. This study, that is carried out in cooperation with ITRL and it forms part of the MERGEN project, aims to introduce HCI techniques in order to prove that these techniques can bring valuable and credible results when substituting the conventional means of carrying out experiments. The study focuses on how the level of car traffic and the presence or not of traffic signs and lights affect how the drivers’ perceive stress emotion. To extract relevant information, a perceptual experiment was conducted in which 29 subjects were exposed to stimuli that represented four different virtual street scenarios. Each scenario comprised a unique case that combined the two factors under examination. In order to measure the levels of the perceived stress, the subjects of the experiment were asked to answer questions on how they perceive the following four aspects: confidence, comfort, route information and manageability of traffic load. It was concluded that the presence of traffic signs and automated traffic lights has a big impact on every aspect that was examined since a significant difference on the responses given was measured. It was also concluded that the level of car traffic does not play a very significant role when it alters in street scenarios where traffic signs and traffic lights are present. Nevertheless, the level of car traffic becomes a factor on how drivers perceive stress when the street scenario does not include presence of traffic signs and lights. The use of HCI techniques with the goal to extract information on how drivers perceive emotions managed to give back descriptive results, something that can enhance the use of this kind of methods in the evaluation of not only street network designs but any Built Environment design in general. The study is conducted using virtual scenarios but is meant to help better understand emotions in real situations.
Att förstå vilka faktorer som påverkar uppfattningen av stress under körning är intressant eftersom det skulle hjälpa oss att begripa hur gatunätets design kan undvika att sätta stress på förarna. Tidigare forskning har mätt förarnas uppfattning om säkerhet under olika gatuförhållanden genom att använda videoklipp från verkliga gatumiljöer. Denna studie, som genomförs i samarbete med ITRL och ingår i MERGEN-projektet, syftar till att införa HCI-tekniker för att bevisa att dessa tekniker kan ge värdefulla och trovärdiga resultat när de ersätter konventionella metoder för att genomföra experiment. Studien fokuserar på hur nivån på biltrafik och närvaro av trafikskyltar och ljus påverkar hur förarna uppfattar stresskänslor. För att extrahera relevant information genomfördes ett perceptuellt experiment där 29 personer utsattes för stimuli som representerade fyra olika virtuella gatuscenarier. Varje scenario bestod av ett unikt fall som kombinerade de två faktorer som undersöktes. För att mäta nivåerna av den upplevda stressen ombads försökspersonerna att svara på frågor om hur de uppfattar de följande fyra aspekterna: förtroende, komfort, ruttinformation och hanterbarhet av trafikbelastningen. Man drog slutsatsen att närvaron av trafikskyltar och automatiserade trafikljus har stor inverkan på varje aspekt som undersöktes eftersom en signifikant skillnad i de givna svaren uppmättes. Man drog också slutsatsen att biltrafiknivån inte spelar en så viktig roll när den förändras i gatuscenarier där trafikskyltar och trafikljus finns. Ändå blir biltrafiknivån en faktor för hur förare upplever stress när gatuscenariot inte inkluderar närvaron av trafikskyltar och ljus. Användningen av HCI-tekniker i syfte att extrahera information om hur förare uppfattar känslor lyckades ge tillbaka beskrivande resultat, något som kan förbättra användningen av denna typ av metoder vid utvärderingen av inte bara gatunätdesign utan alla byggnadsmiljöer generellt. Studien genomförs med virtuella scenarier men är tänkt att hjälpa till att bättre förstå känslor i verkliga situationer.

This thesis focuses on the performance of circuit-switched wavelength-routed optical network with unpredictable traffic pattern variations. This characteristic of optical networks is termed traffic forecast tolerance. First, the increasing volume and heterogeneous nature of data and voice traffic is discussed. The challenges in designing robust optical networks to handle unpredictable traffic statistics are described. Other work relating to the same research issues are discussed. A general methodology to quantify the traffic forecast tolerance of optical networks is presented. A traffic model is proposed to simulate dynamic, non-uniform loads, and used to test wavelength-routed optical networks considering numerous network topologies. The number of wavelengths required and the effect of the routing and wavelength allocation algorithm are investigated. A new method of quantifying the network tolerance is proposed, based on the calculation of the increase in the standard deviation of the blocking probabilities with increasing traffic load non-uniformity. The performance of different networks are calculated and compared. The relationship between physical features of the network topology and traffic forecast tolerance is investigated. A large number of randomly connected networks with different sizes were assessed. It is shown that the average lightpath length and the number of wavelengths required for full interconnection of the nodes in static operation both exhibit a strong correlation with the network tolerance, regardless of the degree of load non-uniformity. Finally, the impact of wavelength conversion on network tolerance is investigated. Wavelength conversion significantly increases the robustness of optical networks to unpredictable traffic variations. In particular, two sparse wavelength conversion schemes are compared and discussed: distributed wavelength conversion and localized wavelength conversion. It is found that the distributed wavelength conversion scheme outperforms localized wavelength conversion scheme, both with uniform loading and in terms of the network tolerance. The results described in this thesis can be used for the analysis and design of reliable WDM optical networks that are robust to future traffic demand variations.

Abstract:
Road accident is one of the major causes of mortality in many countries. Road traffic education is essential for all drivers in order to improve road safety and minimizes the impacts to the society due to road accidents. Virtual Experiential Learning (VEL) framework is proposed in this study to improve learning by reducing cognitive load in educating undergraduate students on traffic rules in Thailand. The VEL framework is developed based on the Mayer’s model, comprising learning instructions with multimedia presentations including Experiential Learning (EL) techniques, aiming to reduce cognitive overload while focusing on the education of traffic rules. The learning conceptual framework of Virtual Experiential Learning (VEL) combines with learning instructional materials, including multimedia and 3D based video instructions. This study has been conducted with four different instructional designs, but they presented the same contents. The control group (group A) was based on traditional instructional design comprised text and pictures. Three other experimental groups were: (a) traditional instruction design with EL comprised narration of text and pictures (group B); (b) multimedia instruction design with EL comprised narration of text, pictures, sounds, and 2D animations (group C); and (c) 3D based instruction design with EL comprised of narration of text, pictures, sounds, and 3D videos (group D). The results were compared between pre-test, post-test and final-test scores of four groups of participants. The results, multimedia instruction delivered with Experiential Learning (EL) and 3D based video instruction delivered with EL has improved learners’ knowledge on traffic rules. It was noted that learners’ knowledge was improved using multimedia instructional designs with EL techniques, and it also affected cognitive load reduction in short term memory. The study also found that 3D based video instructions affected cognitive load reduction and it provided the best results in terms of learner’s knowledge retention in the long term memory. Finally, the effect of learner satisfaction on cognitive load reduction was examined and it was found that learner satisfactions can affect the learning outcomes.

Research in the area of bridge design has been and still isconcentrated on the study of the strength of materials andrelatively few studies have been performed on traffic loads andtheir effects. Traffic loads have usually been assumed to begiven in codes. This is mainly because it is very difficult tomodel traffic loads in an accurate manner because of theirrandomness.

In this work, statistical evaluations of traffic loadeffects, obtained from real as well as Monte Carlo (MC)simulated vehicle data, are presented. As the dynamiccontribution of the vehicle load was filtered by the systemused for measuring vehicle weight, no attention was paid in thepresent study to the dynamic effects or the impact factor. Thedynamic contribution of the traffic load models from codes wasdeducted wherever they were compared with the result from theevaluation of the real data. First, the accuracy of thecollected data was investigated. This was done to examine theinfluence of what was most probably unreasonable data on thefinal evaluated results. Subsequently, the MC simulationtechnique, using a limited amount of the collected data, wasused to generate fictitious vehicle data that could representresults from field measurements which would otherwise have tobe recorded under a long period. Afterwards, the characteristictotal traffic loads for bridges with large spans weredetermined by probabilistic analysis. This was done using realas well as simulated data and the two were compared. Theseresults were also compared with the corresponding valuescalculated using the traffic load model from the Swedish bridgedesign code.

Furthermore, using traffic data, different load effects onbridges (girder distribution factor of slab-on-girder bridgesand the mid-span deflection as well as the longitudinal stressat critical locations on box-girder bridges) were investigated.The main task was to obtain a more accurate knowledge oftraffic load distributions on bridges as well as their effectsfor infrastructure design. The results showed that the trafficload models from codes gave considerably higher load effectscompared to the current actual traffic load effects. Theseinvestigations were based on the available data for the actualposition of the vehicles on a single bridge and might not coverall possible traffic scenarios. The results showed only how thereal traffic loads, under”normal”conditions andtheir transverse positions relate to the load model accordingto the codes.

This thesis explores the design of flexible pipes, buried in shallow trenches with dry sand backfill. The thesis reports the comprehensive analysis of twenty-two full-scale load tests conducted between 1989 and 1991 on pipe installations, mainly within a laboratory facility, at the University of South Australia. The pipes were highly flexible, spirally-wound, uPVC pipes, ranging in diameter from 300 to 450 mm. Guidelines were required by industry for safe cover heights for these pipes when subjected to construction traffic. The tests were designed by, and conducted under the supervision of, the author, prior to the author undertaking this thesis. As current design approaches for pipes could not anticipate the large loading settlements and hence, soil plasticity, experienced in these tests, finite element analyses were attempted. Extensive investigations of the materials in the installations were undertaken to permit finite element modelling of the buried pipe installations. In particular, a series of large strain triaxial tests were conducted on the sand backfill in the buried pipe installations, to provide an understanding of the sand behaviour in terms of critical state theory. Subsequently a constitutive model for the soil was developed. The soil model was validated before implementation in an element of finite element program, AFENA (Carter and Balaam, 1995). Single element modelling of the triaxial tests proved invaluable in obtaining material constants for the soil model. The new element was applied successfully to the analysis of a side-constrained, plate loading test on the sand. The simulation of the buried pipe tests was shown to require three-dimensional finite element analysis to approach the observed pipe-soil behaviour. Non-compliant side boundary conditions were ultimately adjudged chiefly responsible for the difficulty in matching the experimental data. The value of numerical analyses performed in tandem with physical testing was apparent, albeit in hindsight. The research has identified the prediction of vertical soil pressure above the pipe due to external loading as being the major difficulty for designers. Based on the finite element analyses of the field tests, a preliminary simple expression was developed for estimation of these pressures, which could be used with currently available design approaches to reasonably predict pipe deflections.

Abstract:
The system test is very significant in the development life cycle of a telecommunication network node. Tools such as TITANSim are used to develop the test framework upon which a load test application is created. These tools need to be highly efficient and optimized to reduce the cost of the system test. This thesis project created a load test application based on the distributed scheduling architecture of TITANSim, whereby multiple users can be simulated using a single test component. This new distributed scheduling system greatly reduces the number of operating system processes involved, thus reducing the memory consumption of the load test application; hence higher loads can be easily simulated with limited hardware resources. The load test application used for system test of the HSS is based on the central scheduling architecture of TITANSim. The central scheduling architecture is a function test concept, where every user is simulated by a single test component. In the system test several thousand users are simulated by the test system. Therefore, the load application based on central scheduling architecture uses thousands of test components leading to high memory consumption in the test system. In this architecture, the scheduling of test components is centralized which results in a lot of communication overhead within the test system, as thousands of test components communicate with a master scheduling component during the test execution. On the other hand, in the distributed scheduling architecture the scheduling task is performed locally by each test component. There is no communication overhead within the test system. Therefore, the test system is highly efficient. In the distributed scheduling architecture the traffic flow of the simulated users are described using the Finite State Machines (FSMs). The FSMs are specified in the configuration files that are used by the test system at run time. Therefore, implementing traffic cases using the distributed scheduling architecture becomes simpler and faster as there is no (TTCN-3) coding/compilation. The HSS is the only node (within Ericsson) whose system test is performed using the central scheduling architecture of TITANSim. The other users (nodes) of TITANSim are using the distributed scheduling architecture for its apparent benefits. Under this circumstance, this thesis project assumes significance for the HSS. When a decision to adapt the distributed scheduling architecture is made for the system test of the HSS, the load application created in this thesis project can be used as a model, or extended for the migration of the test modules for the HSS from the central scheduling architecture to the distributed scheduling architecture. By creating this load application we have gained significant knowledge of the TITANSim framework; most importantly, the necessary modifications to the TITANSim framework required to create a distributed scheduling architecture based load application for the HSS. The load application created for this project was used to (system) test the HSS by generating load using real system test hardware. The results were analytically compared with the test results from the existing load application (which is based on the central scheduling architecture). The analysis showed that the load application based on distributed scheduling architecture is efficient, utilizes less test system resources, and capable of scaling up the load generation capacity
Systemet test är mycket betydelsefullt i utvecklingen livscykeln för ett telenät nod.Verktyg som TITANSim används för att utveckla testet ram på vilken ett belastningsprov program skapas. Dessa verktyg måste vara mycket effektiv och optimerad för att minska kostnaderna för systemet testet. Detta examensarbete skapat ett program belastningsprov bygger på distribuerad schemaläggning arkitektur TITANSim, där flera användare kan simuleras med hjälp av ett enda test komponent. Det nya distribuerade schemaläggning systemet minskar kraftigt antalet operativsystem inblandade system processer, vilket minskar minnesförbrukning av lasten testprogram, därav högre belastningar kan enkelt simuleras med begränsade hårdvara resurser. Lasten testa program som används för systemtest av HSS är baserad på den centrala schemaläggning arkitektur TITANSim. Den centrala schemaläggning arkitektur är ett funktionstest koncept, där varje användare simuleras med ett enda test komponent. I systemet testa flera tusen användare är simulerade av testsystemet.Därför använder belastningen program baserat på centrala schemaläggning arkitektur tusentals testa komponenter leder till hög minnesförbrukning i testsystemet.I denna arkitektur är schemaläggning av test komponenter centraliserad vilket resulterar i en mycket kommunikation overhead inom testsystem, som tusentals testa komponenter kommunicerar med en mästare schemaläggning komponent under testexekvering. Å andra sidan, i den distribuerade schemaläggning arkitekturen schemaläggning uppgiften utförs lokalt av varje test komponent. Det finns ingen kommunikation overhead i testsystemet. Därför är testsystemet mycket effektiv. I distribuerad schemaläggning arkitekturen trafikflödet av simulerade användare beskrivs med Finite State Machines (FSMs). Den FSMs anges i konfigurationsfiler som används av testsystemet vid körning. Därför genomföra trafiken fall med distribuerad schemaläggning arkitektur blir enklare och snabbare eftersom det inte finns någon (TTCN-3) kodning / sammanställning. HSS är den enda nod (inom Ericsson) vars system test utförs med hjälp av den centrala schemaläggningen arkitektur TITANSim. Den andra användare (noder) i TITANSim använder distribuerad schemaläggning arkitektur för sina uppenbara fördelar. Under denna omständighet, förutsätter detta examensarbete betydelse för HSS. När ett beslut att anpassa distribuerad schemaläggning arkitektur är gjord för systemet test av HSS, kan belastningen program som skapats i detta examensarbete kan användas som en modell, eller förlängas för migration av testet moduler för HSS från den centrala schemaläggningen arkitektur för distribuerade schemaläggning arkitektur. Genom att skapa denna belastning ansökan har vi fått stor kunskap om TITANSim ramen, viktigast av allt, de nödvändiga ändringar av TITANSim ramverk som krävs för att skapa en distribuerad schemaläggning arkitektur baserad belastning ansökan för HSS. Lasten program som skapats för detta projekt har använts för att (system) testa HSS genom att generera last använda riktiga maskinvarusystem test. Resultaten analytiskt jämfört med provresultaten från den befintliga belastningen ansökan (som är baserad på den centrala schemaläggning arkitektur). Analysen visade att belastningen ansökan baseras på distribuerad schemaläggning arkitektur är effektiv, använder mindre resurser testsystem, och kan skala upp kapaciteten last generation

Abstract:
In this thesis, one of the most important issues in the field of networks communication is tackled and addressed. This issue is represented by QoS, where the increasing demand on highquality applications together with the fast increase in the rates of Internet users have led to massive traffic being transmitted on the Internet. This thesis proposes new ideas to manage the flow of this huge traffic in a manner that contributes in improving the communication QoS. This can be achieved by replacing the conventional application-insensitive routing schemes by others which take into account the type of applications when making the routing decision. As a first contribution, the effect on the potential development in the quality of experience on the loading of Basra optical network has been investigated. Furthermore, the traffic due to each application was dealt with in different ways according to their delay and loss sensitivities. Load rate distributions over the various links due to the different applications were deployed to investigate the places of possible congestions in the network and the dominant applications that cause such congestions. In addition, OpenFlow and Optica Burst Switching (OBS) techniques were used to provide a wider range of network controllability and management. A centralised routing protocol that takes into account the available bandwidth, delay, and security as three important QoS parameters, when forwarding traffics of different types, was proposed and implemented using OMNeT++ networks simulator. As a novel idea, security has been incorporated in our QoS requirements by incorporating Oyster Optics Technology (OOT) to secure some of the optical links aiming to supply the network with some secure paths for those applications that have high privacy requirements. A particular type of traffic is to be routed according to the importance of these three QoS parameters for such a traffic type. The link utilisation, end to end delays and securities due to the different applications were recorded to prove the feasibility of our proposed system. In order to decrease the amount of traffic overhead, the same QoS constraints were implemented on a distributed Ant colony based routing. The traditional Ant routing protocol was improved by adopting the idea of Red-Green-Blue (RGB) pheromones routing to incorporate these QoS constraints. Improvements of 11% load balancing, and 9% security for private data was achieved compared to the conventional Ant routing techniques. In addition, this Ant based routing was utilised to propose an improved solution for the routing and wavelength assignment problem in the WDM optical computer networks.

Cette thèse est consacrée à l’analyse de la fiabilité du tablier du viaduc de Millau, un pont à haubans situé dans le sud de la France. Le but principal est d’extrapoler dans le temps les charges et les effets de charges sur le pont afin d’observer la fiabilité de différentes parties de la structure pendant sa durée de vie. Le viaduc de Millau est une infrastructure routière française, complexe et unique, qui est en début de vie. Il est important de pouvoir prévoir les charges extrêmes possibles sur le tablier du pont en raison de l’augmentation du volume ou du poids des véhicules. De telles prévisions nécessitent des données mesurées sur l’ouvrage, soit les charges ou actions, soit les effets de celles-ci. Les structures à grande échelle ont besoin d’une grande quantité de données, qu’il est difficile d’obtenir, de stocker et d’analyser. Cela pose un autre défi : les prévisions basées sur un temps limité et des données de surveillance accessibles. Les prévisions de charges de trafic dans ce travail sont effectuées à l’aide des données fournies par la surveillance du trafic du système BWIM pour le cas d’état limite ultime. Pour l’extrapolation de charge dans le temps, plusieurs méthodes de la théorie des valeurs extrêmes (EVT) sont comparées, une attention particulière étant accordée à l’approche POT. De plus, une contribution aux méthodes existantes pour le choix du seuil, en tant que principal défi de l’approche de POT, est apportée. Dans les grands ponts à haubans, le trafic n’est pas nécessairement l’action principale, mais les charges climatiques peuvent avoir un effet similaire ou supérieur. Le centre de ce travail est le tablier du viaduc de Millau. Par conséquent, la charge de vent statique obtenue à partir du système de surveillance de la santé structurelle du viaduc est considérée en combinaison avec les files de camions de circulation. Un modèle probabiliste est créé pour observer les probabilités de cas extrêmes pour les actions et leur combinaison. De même, l’influence de la durée de surveillance sur les intervalles de confiance pour les niveaux de retour de charges est étudiée. Dans le détail du tablier orthotrope en acier, les effets locaux causés par le passage de véhicules et les effets globaux contribuent à la valeur des contraintes. Les effets globaux proviennent des files des véhicules sur les deux voies de tablier et du vent statique dans une direction perpendiculaire. Dans cette thèse, un modèle d’éléments finis du pont est créé afin d’évaluer les contraintes dans le pont. Cela offre également la possibilité de prévoir l’état limite de fatigue. Habituellement, les dommages de fatigue accumulées dans un détail pendant la période de surveillance sont extrapolées linéairement. Le travail actuel propose une méthodologie pour extrapoler le nombre de cycles de fatigue dans le temps avec l’approche POT, qui prend en compte une variation du trafic en volume et en poids avec le temps. Une comparaison de l’approche proposée avec la méthode classique est effectuée et utilisée dans l’analyse de fiabilité en raison de fatigue. Une analyse de fiabilité est également effectuée pour l’état limite ultime afin de comparer les résultats obtenus avec plusieurs approches de EVT, d’observer l’importance des actions du vent sur la fiabilité du tablier et de comparer les prévisions basées sur EVT avec les modèles de charge de calcul des normes Européennes pour le trafic et le vent
The Thesis is dedicated to reliability analysis of the deck of Millau viaduct, a cable-stayed bridge located in Southern France. The main interest is the extrapolation in time of loads and load effects affecting the bridge in order to observe the reliability of chosen elements during the operational life of the structure. Millau viaduct is a complex unique bridge of French road infrastructure in the early stage of its life. It is important to be able to predict possible extreme loads on the deck of the bridge due to traffic growing in volume or weight. Such predictions require data from monitored actions or load effects in elements of the bridge. Large-scale structures need an enormous amount of data, that is not easy to obtain, to store and to analyze. It leads to another challenge - predictions based on limited time and accessible monitoring data.In the current work, predictions for traffic loads are done using provided data from bridge Weigh-in-Motion (BWIM) traffic monitoring for the case of the the ultimate limit state (ULS). For load extrapolation in time, several methods of Extreme Value Theory (EVT) are compared, with the most attention to the Peaks Over Threshold (POT) approach. Moreover, a contribution to existing methods for threshold choice, as the main challenge of POT approach, is made.In large cable-stayed bridges, not necessarily traffic is the leading action, but environment loads can have similar or superior effect. The focus of this work is on the deck of Millau viaduct, therefore, static wind loads obtained from structural health monitoring (SHM) of the viaduct are considered in combination with queues of traffic lorries. A probabilistic model is made to observe probabilities of extreme cases for both actions and their combination. As well, the influence of monitoring duration on confidence intervals for return levels of loads is studied.For the steel orthotropic deck of the bridge, both, local effects caused by passing vehicles and global effects, contribute to values of stresses. Global effects are coming from traffic queues on both lanes and static wind in a perpendicular direction. In this Thesis, finite element model (FEM) of the deck is performed in order to assess stresses in the deck. That brings a possibility to make predictions for the fatigue limit state too. Usually, fatigue damage accumulated in a chosen part of the deck during a monitoring period is extrapolated in time linearly. The current work proposes a methodology to extrapolate numbers of fatigue cycles in time with the POT approach, which accounts for a change in traffic in volume and weight with time. Comparison of the proposed approach with the classical method is made and used in the fatigue reliability analysis. Reliability analysis is made as well for the ULS in order to compare the results obtained from several EVT approaches, to observe the importance of wind actions on the reliability of the deck, and to compare EVT-based predictions with design load models of European Norms (EN) for traffic and wind

Abstract:
Traffic load model in standard or specification for bridge design should guarantee all newly designed bridges to have sufficient security margin for future traffic. Many different methods have been used to model extreme traffic load effects on bridges for predicting characteristic value for short or long return period. In order to provide some guidance on selecting parameter estimation when applying POT to bridge traffic loading, we focus on the effect that method used to estimate the parameters of the GPD has on the accuracy of the estimated characteristic values. Through this qualitative discussion on the methods, several available methods for traffic loading are selected. Numerical simulation data, Monte Carlo simulation traffic load effects and in-field traffic load effect measurements are analyzed and presented. Literature points out that the traffic load effect is induced by loading event that involves different number of vehicles, and the distribution of the load effects from different loading events are not identically distributed, which violates the assumption of classic extreme value theory that the underlying distribution should be identically independent distributed. Methods using mixture distribution (exponential or generalized extreme value) has been proposed in the literature to model the extreme traffic load effect by loading event. However, the traffic loading may be also importance if the bridge encounter traffic induced fatigue problem, components like orthotropic steel deck is governed by traffic induced fatigue load effects. We intend to explore the influence of traffic load on the fatigue behaviour of orthotropic steel deck, especially the influence of the loading position in terms of transverse location of vehicle. Measurements of transverse location of vehicle collected from by weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems in 2010 and 2011 four French highways showed a completely different distribution model of transverse location of vehicle to that recommended in EC1. Stress spectrum analysis and fatigue damage calculation was performed on the stresses induced traffic on orthotropic steel deck of Millau cable-stayed bridge. By comparing the stresses and damages induced by different traffic patterns (through distributions of transverse location of vehicle), it was found that the histogram of stress spectrum and cumulative fatigue damage were significantly affected by the distribution of transverse location of vehicle. Therefore, numerical analysis that integrates finite element modelling and traffic data with distributions of transverse location of vehicles can help to make an accurate predetermination of which welded connections should be sampled to represent the health of the deck

Abstract:
The Swedish government is planning to increase the maximum vehicle gross load regulations on parts of the national roads from the present 60 t, for the load carrying capacity class BK1, to 74 t, for the proposed new load carrying capacity class BK4. The initial implementation of the new load carrying capacity class for 74 t vehicles will only regard major highways and important roads, however, at a later stage the plan is to implement the new BK4 class on the full current BK1 road network. The biggest obstacle which arises when implementing these increased traffic loads is insufficient load carrying capacity for the bridges on the road network.   Thus, the objective of this thesis is to examine and analyze the effects of the increased traffic loads on Swedish road bridges. In order to identify the structural effects of the load increase, and draw general conclusions regarding the effects on the bridge network as a whole, a case study with load carrying capacity calculations is carried out on a two-span concrete slab fram bridge at a highway interchange in Värö in western Sweden. The bridge is classified as critical by Trafikverket. The load carrying capacity calculation is carried out using the Swedish standards, in which maximum load values for the axle load, A, and the bogie load, B, is calculated.   The load effects acting on the bridge are calculated using the finite element software BRIGADE/Standard, with input traffic A and B loads amounting to 12 t and 21 t respectively for the new BK4 class and to 12 t and 18 t respectively for class BK1. In addition to the load carrying capacity calculations with BK4 traffic loads, a comparison is carried out between the results obtained when using the axle- and bogie loads from the BK1 versus the BK4 load carrying capacity class in the load carrying capacity calculations.   The load carrying capacity calculations performed on the studied bridge shows that the capacity of the bridge, both in regards to moment and shear force, is insufficient to meet the new, increased, BK4 A/B – requirements. The critical A/B – values for the whole bridge are 17 t and 18 t respectively, to be compared with the required 12- and 21 t limit for the new BK4 load carrying capacity class, thus, making the load carrying capacity of the bridge inadequate. The critical A/B – values appear for the longitudinal shear force load case at the point where the shear force reinforcement over the column support ends. Moreover, the difference between the results obtained when using the BK1 versus the BK4 traffic loads in the calculations were found to be negligible.   Due to the differing properties and characteristics of each individual bridge on the Swedish road network it is difficult to make general statements regarding the effects of the increased traffic loads on the bridge network as a whole. Specific load carrying capacity calculations will need to be performed on each individual bridge in order to evaluate its capability to withstand the new increased BK4 traffic load. However, capacity calculations regarding the BK1 load carrying capacity class can, with sufficient accuracy, be used to evaluate the capability of a bridge to withstand the increased traffic loads in the BK4 load carrying capacity class, thus, making it easier to evaluate the strengthening needs for the bridge network as a whole.
Sveriges regering planerar en utökning av den maximalt tillåtna bruttovikten för fordon på delar av det allmänna vägnätet från den nuvarande begränsningen på 60 t, för bärighetsklass BK1, till 74 t, för den nya föreslagna bärighetsklassen BK4. I det första skedet kommer den nya bärighetsklassen, för fordon med bruttovikt upp till 74 t, bara att implementeras på stora motorvägar och andra ur transportsynpunkt viktiga vägar, men, i ett senare skede finns också planer på att implementera den nya bärighetsklassen, BK4, på hela det nuvarande BK1 vägnätet. Det största problemet som förväntas uppkomma under införandet av de nya, ökade, trafiklasterna är otillräcklig bärighet på vägnätets broar.   Således är målet med denna uppsats att undersöka och analysera effekterna av dessa ökade trafiklaster för broar på det Svenska vägnätet. För att identifiera effekterna, och dra generella slutsatser, gällande denna ökade trafiklast för broarna på det Svenska vägnätet i sin helhet kommer en fallstudie med bärighetsberäkningar utföras på en plattrambro vid trafikplats Värö - en bro som Trafikverket bedömer som kritisk. Bärighetsberäkningen utförs enligt svenska standarder, där maximala tillåtna värden på axellasten, A, och bogielasten, B, beräknas.   Lasteffekterna som verkar på bron beräknas med hjälp finita element programvaran BRIGADE/Standard med trafiklaster, A och B, som uppgår till 12  respektive 21 t för den nya BK4 bärighetsklassen och 12 respektive 18 t för bärighetsklass BK1. Som tillägg till bärighetsberäkningarna med BK4 laster utförs också en jämförelse av resultaten som uppkommer när axel- och bogielasterna från BK1 respektive BK4 används i beräkningarna.    Bärighetsberäkningarna på den studerade bron visar att brons kapacitet, både gällande moment och tvärkraft, är otillräcklig när den belastas med de ökade BK4 trafiklasterna. De kritiska A- och B- värdena för bron är 17 respektive 18 t, värden som skall jämföras med kraven på 12 respektive 21 t för den nya bärighetsklassen BK4 – därmed är brons bärighet otillräcklig. De kritiska A- och B-värdena för bron uppkommer för lastfallet med longitudinell tvärkraft vid punkten där tvärkraftsarmeringen över mittstödet slutar verka. Jämförelsen mellan beräkningsresultaten som uppkom med trafiklaster enligt BK1 respektive BK4 visade att skillnaden mellan beräkningsresultaten var försumbar.   På grund av de varierande egenskaperna hos varje enskild bro på det Svenska vägnätet är det svårt att dra generella slutsatser gällande effekterna av lastökningen för vägnätet som helhet. Specifika bärighetsberäkningar måste utföras på varje individuell bro för att kunna utvärdera dess kapacitet att klara av de nya, ökade, BK4 trafiklasterna. Emellertid kan bärighetsberäkningar som beträffar bärighetsklassen BK1, med tillräcklig tillförlitlighet, användas för att bedöma en bros möjlighet att motstå de ökade trafiklasterna i den nya bärighetsklassen BK4, vilket förenklar utvärderingen av vilka broar som kräver förstärkning.

Abstract:
At the turn of 2010/2011, Sweden went from designing structures according to nationaldesign codes to the new European standards Eurocode. For bridge engineers, this implieda change from a combination of BRO 2004 and BSK 07 to the Eurocode as the maindocuments, complemented by national documents such as TRVK Bro 11. The normtransition did not only change the calculation methods, but also turned a phenomenonthat never was of great importance for road bridges before into something that could limitthe carrying capacity of the structure. This phenomenon is called fatigue, i.e. repeatedload cycles, where each load is much lower than the ultimate limit state capacity, thatfinally results in collapse. This master thesis investigates why fatigue is significant in the design today. This is donethrough a comparison of how the new and old regulations assesses fatigue. A bridge builtin 2011, designed by ELU Konsult AB according to the old regulations, was modelledin the finite element program LUSAS. Several lorry crossings from different fatigue loadmodels were then simulated. The output from LUSAS was then used to calculate theutilization ratios for three critical points along the bridge. The result indicates that both regulations give rise to similar stress ranges, i.e. thedifference between the maximum and minimum stress obtained during a crossing. Thedifferences between the regulations are instead within the fatigue calculations, where themajor difference is the number of lorries crossing the bridge during its lifetime. Theutilization ratio according to the old regulations for the worst exposed point is 27.0 %,corresponding to 9.13 daily crossings by heavy lorries, which is the maximum numberof daily crossings provided by BRO 2004. The lowest utilization ratio according tothe Eurocode is 70.0 %, calculated for 137 daily crossings which is the lowest amountof crossings allowed. An interpretation of the Eurocode, which allows usage of fatigue loadmodel 5 even for smaller bridges, results in a utilization ratio of 56.0% which correspondsto 90.0 daily crossings, i.e. lower than the other fatigue load models provided by theEurocode but clearly above the old regulations. The conclusion is that an alternative way of deciding the number of crossings shouldbe provided by the Eurocode. Today, the classification consists of four steps, which arevery rough. Instead, a proposal is given in this thesis which advocates usage of a linearfunction for deciding the number of design crossings based on the number of daily crossingsby lorries. The proposed alternative design method is between the two regulations withrespect to daily crossings and utilization ratio.
Vid årsskiftet 2010/2011 övergick Sverige från att dimensionera byggnadsverk enligt nationellastandarder till den nya europastandarden Eurokod. För brokonstruktörer innebar dettaen övergång från en kombination av BRO 2004 och BSK 07, till att Eurokod blev dethuvudsakligt styrande dokumentet, med bland annat TRVK Bro 11 som ett dokumentmed tillhörande nationella val. Övergången medförde inte bara att verksamma konstruktörertvingades lära sig förändrade beräkningsmetoder, utan också att ett fenomen som tidigaresällan var dimensionerande för vägbroar nu kunde vara det som ställde högst krav påbärförmågan. Detta fenomen kallas utmattning, dvs. upprepade av- och pålastningar, varoch en betydligt lägre än brons maximala bärförmåga, som i slutändan resulterar i brott. I detta examensarbete utreds det varför utmattning numera är en betydande del avdimensioneringen. Detta sker genom en jämförelse av hur de gamla och nya normernautvärderar utmattning. Som modell har en befintlig bro invigd 2011, dimensioneradav ELU Konsult AB enligt de gamla normerna, använts. Denna bro har modellerats ifinita element programmet LUSAS, varpå en mängd olika lastbilsöverfarter simulerats ochutmattningsutnyttjandet för tre utvalda kritska punkter beräknats. Resultatet indikerar att båda normerna har liknande storlekar på spänningsvidderna,dvs. skillnaden på största och minsta spänningen som uppstår vid en överfart. Däremotråder det skillnader vid utmattningsberäkningarna, där den stora skillnaden är antalettunga fordon som passerar bron under dess livslängd. Enligt de gamla normerna ärutnyttjandegraden för den värst utsatta studerade punkten 27.0 %, vilket är beräknatpå det högsta antalet dagliga passager från tunga fordon som BRO 2004 tillåter, d.v.s.9.13 dagliga passager. Enligt Eurokod uppgår den lägsta utnyttjandegraden till 70.0 %,vilket motsvarar 137 dagliga överfarter vilket är det lägsta Eurokod tillåter. Vid ettalternativt sätt att tolka Eurokod, som tillåter användandet av utmattningslastmodell5 även för mindre broar, fås en utnyttjandegrad på 56.0% vilket motsvarar 90.0 dagligaöverfarter. Detta är något lägre än de andra utmattningslastmodellerna enligt Eurokodmen fortfarande högre än det gamla regelverket. Slutsatsen av uppsatsen är att ett alternativt sätt att bestämma antalet överfarter bordeerbjudas i Eurokod, då indelningen idag består av fyra stora trappsteg vilket ger en väldigtsnäv indelning. I detta examensarbete presenteras ett förslag som innebär att antaletdimensionerande överfarter istället bör bestämmas som en rätlinjig funktion av antaletdagliga överfarter från tung trafik. Det föreslagna sättet ligger mellan de båda normernamed hänsyn till passager och utnyttjandegrad.

Abstract:

The principle of load balancing is to distribute the data load more evenly over the network in order to increase the network performance and efficiency. With dynamic load balancing the routing is undated at certain intervals. This thesis was developed to evaluate load balancing methods in the IP-network of TeliaSonera.Load balancing using short path routing, bottleneck load balancing and load balancing using MPLS have been evaluated. Short path routing is a flow sharing technique that allows routing on paths other than the shortest one.

Load balancing using short path routing is achieved by dynamic updates of the link weights. Bottleneck is in its nature a dynamic load balancing algorithm. Unlike load balancing using short path routing it updates the flow sharing, not the metrics. The algorithm uses information about current flow sharing and link loads to detect bottlenecks within the network. The information is used to calculate new flow sharing parameters. When using MPLS, one or more complete routing paths (LSPs) are defined at each edge LSR before sending any traffic. MPLS brings the ability to perform flow sharing by defining the paths to be used and how the outgoing data load is to be shared among these.

The model has been built from data about the network supplied by TeliaSonera. The model consists of a topology part, a traffic part, a routing part and cost part. The traffic model consists of a OD demand matrix. The OD demand matrix has been estimated from collected link loads. This was done with estimation models; the gravity model and an optimisation model.

The algorithms have been analysed at several scenarios; normal network, core node failure, core link failure and DWDM system failure. A cost function, where the cost increases as the link load increases has been used to evaluate the algorithms. The signalling requirements for implementation of the load balancing algorithm have also been investigated.

Nous nous différencions des nombreux travaux de ce domaine par une réactivité accrue aux variations des conditions réseaux. Cela a été rendu possible grâce à une complexité calculatoire réduite et une attention particulière au surcoût induit par les échanges de données. Pour valider les solutions proposées, nous les avons testées sur une plateforme spécialement construite à cet effet.Dans la première partie de cette thèse, nous présentons l'architecture logicielle ``SegmenT Routing based Energy Efficient Traffic Engineering'' (STREETE). Le cœur de la solution repose sur un re-routage dynamique du trafic en fonction de la charge du réseau dans le but d'éteindre certains liens peu utilisés. Cette solution utilise des algorithmes de graphes dynamiques pour réduire la complexité calculatoire et atteindre des temps de calcul de l'ordre des millisecondes sur un réseau de 50 nœuds. Nos solutions ont aussi été validées sur une plateforme de test comprenant le contrôleur SDN ONOS et des commutateurs OpenFlow. Nous comparons nos algorithmes aux solutions optimales obtenues grâce à des techniques de programmation linéaires en nombres entiers et montrons que le nombre de liens allumés peut être efficacement réduit pour diminuer la consommation électrique tout en évitant de surcharger le réseau.Dans la deuxième partie de cette thèse, nous cherchons à améliorer la performance de STREETE dans le cas d’une forte charge, qui ne peut pas être écoulée par le réseau si des algorithmes de routages à plus courts chemins sont utilisés. Nous analysons des méthodes d'équilibrage de charge pour obtenir un placement presque optimal des flux dans le réseau.Dans la dernière partie, nous évaluons la combinaison des deux techniques proposées précédemment : STREETE avec équilibrage de charge. Ensuite, nous utilisons notre plateforme de test pour analyser l'impact de re-routages fréquents sur les flux TCP. Cela nous permet de donner des indications sur des améliorations à prendre en compte afin d'éviter des instabilités causées par des basculements incontrôlés des flux réseau entre des chemins alternatifs. Nous croyons à l'importance de fournir des résultats reproductibles à la communauté scientifique. Ainsi, une grande partie des résultats présentés dans cette thèse peuvent être facilement reproduits à l'aide des instructions et logiciels fournis
This work seeks to improve the energy efficiency of backbone networks by automatically managing the paths of network flows to reduce the over-provisioning. Compared to numerous works in this field, we stand out by focusing on low computational complexity and smooth deployment of the proposed solution in the context of Software Defined Networks (SDN). To ensure that we meet these requirements, we validate the proposed solutions on a network testbed built for this purpose. Moreover, we believe that it is indispensable for the research community in computer science to improve the reproducibility of experiments. Thus, one can reproduce most of the results presented in this thesis by following a couple of simple steps. In the first part of this thesis, we present a framework for putting links and line cards into sleep mode during off-peak periods and rapidly bringing them back on when more network capacity is needed. The solution, which we term ``SegmenT Routing based Energy Efficient Traffic Engineering'' (STREETE), was implemented using state-of-art dynamic graph algorithms. STREETE achieves execution times of tens of milliseconds on a 50-node network. The approach was also validated on a testbed using the ONOS SDN controller along with OpenFlow switches. We compared our algorithm against optimal solutions obtained via a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model to demonstrate that it can effectively prevent network congestion, avoid turning-on unneeded links, and provide excellent energy-efficiency. The second part of this thesis studies solutions for maximizing the utilization of existing components to extend the STREETE framework to workloads that are not very well handled by its original form. This includes the high network loads that cannot be routed through the network without a fine-grained management of the flows. In this part, we diverge from the shortest path routing, which is traditionally used in computer networks, and perform a particular load balancing of the network flows. In the last part of this thesis, we combine STREETE with the proposed load balancing technique and evaluate the performance of this combination both regarding turned-off links and in its ability to keep the network out of congestion. After that, we use our network testbed to evaluate the impact of our solutions on the TCP flows and provide an intuition about the additional constraints that must be considered to avoid instabilities due to traffic oscillations between multiple paths

Steel orthotropic and reinforced concrete bridge decks experience costly serviceability problems from fatigue and de-icing salts. Pultruded glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) cellular decks show great promise as a means of tackling these concerns. However uptake of GFRP decks is slow, partly due to limited understanding of key structural facets (including fatigue degradation of GFRP decks under repeated tyre loading) of the resulting new bridge forms. This thesis addresses these shortcomings through extensive experimental and finite element studies, including the construction of an 8 m long, 3.65 m wide full-scale laboratory bridge specimen comprising cellular GFRP decking adhesively bonded across three pre-tensioned concrete beams. From the experiments, the mechanics of Plying of the bonded deck-to-beam connections were elucidated and shown to be a potential concern for the concrete near the bond line. Polymer concrete surfacing applied to the deck was observed to significantly reduce the local patch load-induced strains, whilst also altering the contact mechanics between the loader and the flexible decking. FE modelling reliably predicted these experimentally-observed mechanics.

Abstract:
The Multi-resolution Assignment and Loading of Transport Activities (MALTA) system is a simulation-based Dynamic Traffic Assignment model that exploits the advantages of multi-processor computing via the use of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) protocol. Spatially partitioned transportation networks are utilized to estimate travel time via alternate routes on mega-scale network models, while the concurrently run shortest path and assignment procedures evaluate traffic conditions and re-assign traffic in order to achieve traffic assignment goals such as User Optimal and/or System Optimal conditions.Performance gain is obtained via the spatial partitioning architecture that allows the simulation domains to distribute the work load based on a specially designed Recursive On-line Load Balance model (ROLB). The ROLB development describes how the transportation network is transformed into an ordered node network which serves as the basis for a minimum cost heuristic, solved using the shortest path, which solves a multi-objective NP Hard binary optimization problem. The approach to this problem contains a least-squares formulation that attempts to balance the computational load of each of the mSim domains as well as to minimize the inter-domain communication requirements. The model is developed from its formal formulation to the heuristic utilized to quickly solve the problem. As a component of the balancing model, a load forecasting technique is used, Fast Sim, to determine what the link loading of the future network in order to estimate average future link speeds enabling a good solution for the ROLB method.The runtime performance of the MALTA model is described in detail. It is shown how a 94% reduction in runtime was achieved with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) network with the use of 33 CPUs. The runtime was reduced from over 60 minutes of runtime on one machine to less than 5 minutes on the 33 CPUs. The results also showed how the individual runtimes on each of the simulation domains could vary drastically with naïve partitioning methods as opposed to the balanced run-time using the ROLB method; confirming the need to have a load balancing technique for MALTA.

This thesis uses the axle weights and axle spacings of heavy vehicles recorded by weigh-in-motion (WIM) sensors to calculate the load effects on single lane, simply supported structures spanning up to 30m. The main objective was to compare the load effects caused by the recorded vehicles with those calculated using TMH7 Part 2 and the alternative live load models proposed in subsequent research. Through the probabilistic analysis of the truck survey data, the thesis predicts the magnitude of extreme events that may occur within a bridge structure's design life. The results reinforce the deï¬ ciencies of TMH7 Part 2's NA loading curve to cater for normal traffic conditions on spans of 10m and less. They also highlight the conservative assumptions made in the conï¬ guration of vehicle convoys used to simulate serviceability loads in 20m to 30m spans. The ï¬ ndings of the thesis support the need for the rational calibration of the partial factors used in limit state design. The WIM data was analysed to highlight the extent of overloading. The results provide evidence that the overloading of individual axles and axle sets is prevalent and that overloading has a greater impact on 5m and 10m spans than 30m spans. Research was carried out into the basis of the bridge live load models in TMH7 Part 2 and those recently developed in Europe, the United States and Canada. The thesis documents the advancement of rationally based live load models derived from actual vehicle data. Alternative live load models were calibrated against the extreme events predicted by the WiM data. The results independently validate the alternative live load model proposed by the latest research commissioned by the Department of Transport. This live load model takes a similar form to the one proposed in the Eurocode - ENV 1991-3.

Par conséquent, il est nécessaire de trouverdes techniques de transmission et de routage plus efficaces afin de réduire levolume de trafic et augmenter l’efficacité du réseau permettant de prendre encharge le nombre croissant des joueurs. D’autre part, la qualité d’expérience(QoE) dans le contexte des jeux en ligne est fortement liée à la consistance.Cette consistance est influencée par la qualité de service (QoS) offerte parle réseau, principalement en termes de délai, de gigue et d’ordre de paquets.Par conséquent, une solution qui améliore ces paramètres aidera à satisfairedavantage de joueurs et à améliorer la qualité de service.L’objectif de cette thèse est de proposer des solutions pour améliorerla qualité d’expérience des jeux en ligne en augmentant la consistance devue, en réduisant les délais et en augmentant l’efficacité du réseau. Pour leproblème de consistance, nous proposons une topologie de réseau cyclique.Cette topologie ordonnée facilite la mise en place des procédures de gestionet de contrôle de la transmission pour imposer un ordre causal entre tousles joueurs. Concernant le délai et l’efficacité du réseau, certains ont proposé l’application de la technique du tunnel, compression et multiplexage(TCM). Cependant, les paquets transmis avec TCM sont plus grands queceux d’origine, ce qui nécessite plus de temps pour les transmettre et augmente le risque de saturation au niveau des fils d’attente. Nous proposonsl’utilisation de la technique de codage réseau (NC) qui permet d’augmenterle débit dans certaines conditions de topologies et de routage. Cette technique permet aux nœuds intermédiaires d’encoder les paquets qu’ils reçoivent plutôt que d’effectuer une simple fonction de stockage et de transfert. Celapeut réduire la charge de trafic, réduire les délais et augmenter l’efficacité duréseau.Dans cette thèse, nous proposons des modifications pour améliorer latechnique TCM et nous évaluons ses performances. De plus, nous proposonsd’ajouter le concept de partition des joueurs et de changer la topologie d’unarbre à une forêt. Nous étudions ensuite la topologie cyclique. Nous concevons un protocole de routage optimisé sur une topologie en cycle baséesur la technique de codage réseau. Puis, nous évaluons ses performances entermes de délai, de charge et d’ordre. Les résultats montrent que l’utilisationdu codage NC permet de réduire la charge et le nombre de paquets transmis, garantir un ordre de paquet par période et de réduire le délai. Eneffet, on peut gagner jusqu’à 14% de latence avec notre protocole par rapport à un protocole de routage optimisé sans codage réseau. Par la suite,nous proposons un scénario de mise en pratique de cette solution sur une infrastructure Device-to-Device. Nous validons les limites théoriques du délaien utilisant des simulations réseau et nous discutons ensuite des contraintespratiques qui s’imposent lors de l’implémentation dans un réseau réel. The application of massively multiplayer online games provides a large partof the global internet traffic. The traffic is typically encapsulated in TCPsegments of small size information (the so called payload) resulting in a highvolume of headers transmitted through the network. This implies the following: 1) the packets’ size is too small for efficient routing and; 2) thebandwidth required by the server seems to be increasing. Therefore, it isnecessary to find more efficient transmission and routing techniques to reduce the traffic’s volume and to increase the network’s efficiency in orderto support the growing number of players. On the other hand, Quality ofExperience (QoE) in the context of online games is strongly influenced byconsistency. This consistency is influenced by the quality of service (QoS) offered by the network, mainly in terms of delay, jitter and order of the packets.As a result, a solution that enhances these parameters will help in satisfyingmore players and subsequently improving QoE.The goal of this thesis is to propose solutions to enhance the QoE of onlinegames by increasing the consistency of view, reducing the delay and increasing the efficiency of the network. For consistency, we propose a cyclic networktopology. This ordered topology facilitates the implementation of transmission management and control procedures to impose a causal order betweenall players. As for the delay and the efficiency problem, some have proposed the application of Tunneling, Compression and Multiplexing (TCM)technique. However, the transmitted packets with TCM are larger than theoriginal ones, which requires more delay to transmit them and increases therisk of congestion. We propose the use of the Network Coding technique(NC) which makes it possible to increase the bit rate of the network undercertain topological and routing conditions. This technique allows intermediate nodes to encode the data they receive rather than perform a simple”store and forward” function. It can reduce the traffic load, reduce the delay and increase the network’s efficiency.In this thesis, we propose some modifications to enhance the TCM technique and evaluate its performance. Besides, we propose to add the playerspartition approach and change the topology from a tree to a forest. Afterwards, we investigate the cyclic topology. We design an optimized routingprotocol over a cycle topology based on the network coding technique andevaluate its performance in terms of delay and order. The results show thatby using NC coding, one can gain up to 14% of latency over an optimizedrouting protocol for the cycle topology without the use of network coding.Afterwards, we propose a practical implementation scenario of this solutionover a device-to-device (D2D) infrastructure. We finally validate the theoretical limits of delay using network simulations and discuss a number ofpractical constraints

Abstract:
The aim of this PhD thesis was to investigate traffic safety and mobility for individuals with hearing loss (HL). Three studies were conducted: 1. a questionnaire survey aimed to evaluate differences in choice of transportation that might be related to HL, 2. a driving simulator study that looked into compensatory strategies and evaluated the efficiency of a tactile signal to alert the driver, and 3. a field study to evaluate these effects in real traffic and to evaluate a navigation system with a supportive tactile signal. The effects of HL discovered in this thesis add to the knowledge and understanding of the influence of HL on traffic safety and mobility. Differences found consistently point to a generally more cautious behavior. Compensatory and coping strategies associated with HL are bound to driving complexity and appear when complexity increases. These strategies include driving at lower speeds, using a more comprehensive visual search behavior and being less engaged in distracting activities. Evaluation of a tactile signal showed that by adding a tactile modality, some driver assistance systems can also be made accessible to drivers with HL. At the same time, the systems might be more effective for all users, since the driver can be more focused on the road. Based on the results in this thesis, drivers with HL cannot be considered an increased traffic safety risk, and there should be no need for adjustments of the requirements of hearing for a license to drive a car.
Syftet med den här doktorsavhandlingen var att undersöka trafiksäkerhet och mobilitet för individer med hörselnedsättning (HN). Tre studier har genomförts: 1. en enkätstudie för att undersöka skillnader i transportvanor relaterade till HN, 2. en körsimulatorstudie for att titta på kompensatoriska strategier och utvärdera effektiviteten i en taktil signal för att påkalla förarens uppmärksamhet och 3. en fältstudie för att undersöka effekterna i riktig trafik samt utvärdera ett navigationssystem med en taktil signal som stöd för navigering. Effekterna av HN som kom fram i denna avhandling bidrar till kunskapen och förståelsen för hur HN påverkar trafiksäkerhet och mobilitet. De funna skillnaderna pekar konsistent mot ett generelltmera försiktigt beteende. Kompensatoriska - och copingstrategier förknippade med HN beror på körkomplexitet och observeras när komplexiteten ökar. Dessa strategier innebär körning med lägre hastighet, mera heltäckande visuell avsökning och mindre engagemang i distraherande uppgifter. Utvärdering av en taktil signal visade att genom att lägga till en taktil modalitet kan vissa förarstödsystem bli tillgängliga även för förare med HN. Samtidigt kan systemen bli mera effektiva för alla användare eftersom föraren då kan fokusera mera på vägen. Baserat på resultaten i den här avhandlingen kan inte förare med HN betraktas som någon förhöjd risk och det bör därmed inte finnas något behov av att justera hörselkraven när det gäller körkortsinnehav.

Abstract:
Many ageing road bridges, particularly timber bridges, require urgent improvement due to the demand imposed by the recent version of the Australian bridge loading code, AS 5100. As traffic volume plays a key role in the decision of budget allocations for bridge refurbishment/ replacement, many bridges in low volume traffic network remain in poor condition with axle load and/ or speed restrictions, thus disadvantaging many rural communities. This thesis examines an economical and environmentally sensible option of incorporating disused flat rail wagons (FRW) in the construction of bridges in low volume, high axle load road network. The constructability, economy and structural adequacy of the FRW road bridge is reported in the thesis with particular focus of a demonstration bridge commissioned in regional Queensland. The demonstration bridge comprises of a reinforced concrete slab (RCS) pavement resting on two FRWs with custom designed connection brackets at regular intervals along the span of the bridge. The FRW-RC bridge deck assembly is supported on elastomeric rubber pads resting on the abutment. As this type of bridge replacement technology is new and its structural design is not covered in the design standards, the in-service structural performance of the FRW bridge subjected to the high axle loadings prescribed in AS 5100 is examined through performance load testing. Both the static and the moving load tests are carried out using a fully laden commonly available three-axle tandem truck. The bridge deck is extensively strain gauged and displacement at several key locations is measured using linear variable displacement transducers (LVDTs). A high speed camera is used in the performance test and the digital image data are analysed using proprietary software to capture the locations of the wheel positions on the bridge span accurately. The wheel location is thus synchronised with the displacement and strain time series to infer the structural response of the FRW bridge. Field test data are used to calibrate a grillage model, developed for further analysis of the FRW bridge to various sets of high axle loads stipulated in the bridge design standard. Bridge behaviour predicted by the grillage model has exemplified that the live load stresses of the FRW bridge is significantly lower than the yield strength of steel and the deflections are well below the serviceability limit state set out in AS 5100. Based on the results reported in this thesis, it is concluded that the disused FRWs are competent to resist high axle loading prescribed in AS 5100 and are a viable alternative structural solution of bridge deck in the context of the low volume road networks.

Abstract:
Telecommunications companies (telcos) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) monitor the traffic passing through their networks for the purposes of network evaluation and planning for future growth. Most monitoring techniques currently use a form of packet sampling. However, exhaustive monitoring is a preferable solution because it ensures accurate traffic characterization and also allows encoding operations, such as compression and encryption, to be performed. To overcome the very high computational cost of exhaustive monitoring and encoding of data, this thesis suggests exploiting parallelism. By utilizing a parallel cluster in conjunction with load balancing techniques, a simulation is created to distribute the load across the parallel processors. It is shown that a very scalable system, capable of supporting a fairly high data rate can potentially be designed and implemented. A complete system is then implemented in the form of a transparent Ethernet bridge, ensuring that the system can be deployed into a network without any change to the network. The system focuses its encoding efforts on obtaining the maximum compression rate and, to that end, utilizes the concept of streams, which attempts to separate data packets into individual flows that are correlated and whose redundancy can be removed through compression. Experiments show that compression rates are favourable and confirms good throughput rates and high scalability.

First, a numerical parametric study was performed to study the influence of eight factors on pipe-soil behaviour under surface load using ABAQUS. Then, the impact of surface pressure, burial depth, number of cycles and cement stabilization on model response was investigated using laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. Equations were developed using Linear Regression Model and Artificial Neural Network using MATLAB.

O fenômeno do congestionamento, decorrente do rápido aumento da demanda por todos os meios de transporte só tende a se agravar, já que sistemas de transporte (vistos como um todo) têm um grande impacto na economia mundial. No caso do transporte veicular em particular, é notório que a demanda por mobilidade é uma das características da nossa sociedade. O impacto direto e indireto dos congestionamentos em áreas urbanas e interurbanas é imenso, e precisam ser avaliados adequadamente para que seus efeitos sejam pelo menos minorados. Esta dissertação apresenta o AVNET, uma modelagem baseada em agentes para avali- ação do balanceamento de carga em redes de tráfego veicular, capaz de investigar micros- copicamente a interação entre oferta, demanda e as particularidades do comportamento dos motoristas, aqui tratados como agentes autônomos capazes de perceber o estado do ambiente e se adaptar a ele utilizando replanejamento heurístico. O principal objetivo do AVNET é investigar a interação entre a percepção que o agente possui do tráfego e a consequente adaptação através da mudança de rota durante a viagem. De forma cíclica, o AVNET propõe que o estado do ambiente influencia na percepção do agente, e a ação do agente influencia no estado do ambiente. As medidas de balanceamento de carga visam avaliar o desempenho do ponto de vista do motorista, ao invés de abordar a avaliação do ponto de vista da rede como algumas abordagens tradicionalmente propõe. Experimentos foram realizados a partir da variação nas condições de oferta - utili- zando uma rede com topologia em estilo de grade e uma abstração de algumas vias arte- riais da cidade de Porto Alegre/RS - variação nas condições de demanda - o tipo de dis- tribuição e número de viagens - e dos tipos de agentes utilizados. Os resultados ajudam a responder como será o balanceamento de carga de redes de tráfego veicular conforme as condições de oferta e demanda do ambiente, e de percepção/ação dos agentes.
The phenomenon of congestion, due to the rapid increase in demand for all means of transport is only going to worsen, since systems transport (seen as a whole) have a major impact on the world economy. In the case of vehicular transport in particular, it is clear that the demand for mobility is a characteristic of our society. The direct and indirect impact of congestion in urban and long distance is immense, and must be properly evaluated for their effects are at least mitigated. This dissertation presents the AVNET, an agent-basead modelling to evaluate load bal- ancing in networks of vehicular traffic, able to microscopically investigate the interaction between supply, demand and the peculiarities of the behavior of drivers, here treated as autonomous agents, capable to perceive the state of the environment and adapt to it using heuristic redesign. The main goal of AVNET is to investigate the interaction between the perception that the agent has the traffic and the consequent adaptation by changing the route during the trip. Cyclically, the AVNET propose that the state of the environment influences the perception of the agent and the agent’s action influences the state of the environment. Experiments were performed from the variation in supply conditions - using a network grid topology and an abstraction of some arterial roads in the city of Porto Alegre/RS - changes in demand conditions - the type of distribution and number of trips - and the types of agents used. The results will help answer how the balancing network load of vehicular traffic as conditions of supply and demand of the environment, and perception / action agents.

Abstract:
This research is part of a major project with a stimulus that rose from the need to manage a large number of ageing bridges in low traffic volume roads (LTVR) in Australia. The project investigated, designed and consequently constructed, involved replacing an ageing super-structure of a 10m span bridge with a disused Flat-bed Rail Wagon (FRW). This research, therefore, is developed on the premises that the FRW can be adopted as the main structural system for the bridges in LTVR network. The main focus of this research is to present two alternate deck wearing systems (DWS) as part of the design of the FRW as road bridge deck conforming to AS5100 (2004). The bare FRW structural components were first examined for their adequacy (ultimate and serviceability) in resisting the critical loads specified in AS5100(2004). Two options of DWSs were evaluated and their effects on the FRW examined. The first option involved usage of timber DWS; the idea of this option was to use all the primary and secondary members of the FRW in load sharing and to provide additional members where weaknesses in the original members arose. The second option involved usage of reinforced concrete DWS with only the primary members of the FRW sharing the AS5100 (2004) loading. This option inherently minimised the risk associated with any uncertainty of the secondary members to their structural adequacy. This thesis reports the design phases of both options with conclusions of the selection of the ideal option for better structural performance, ease of construction and cost. The comparison carried out here focuses on the distribution of the traffic load by the FRW as a superstructure. Advantages and disadvantages highlighting cost comparisons and ease of constructability of the two systems are also included.

This diploma thesis deals with a proposal and a comparison of several options of transportation planning in the shopping area in the urban area of the town of Modřice, which is enlarging due to the building-up of new commercial centres. The first part of the thesis consists of a treatise on the field of traffic engineering, road-traffic telematics and ITS. The core of the work is formed by a detailed analysis of the current state and calibration of the transport simulation system AIMSUN. The following part shows three different ways of transportation in the given area and all of them include a model of the particular area made in the program AIMSUN and an elaborate analysis of the proposed solution. In the last part of the work all the proposed solutions are compared according to the results gained from the AIMSUN model.

Abstract:
This study was conducted at the Swedish Defense research agency as an attempt to understand affordances and limitations in visualizing altitude information for fighter controllers. The fighter controllers are subject to large quantities of numerical information from multiple sources simultaneously. Their duties are highly stressful and require large mental workload and situational awareness. Today, a large portion of information is represented visually, except for altitude. The altitude of a jet is represented only numerically on the screen, next to the icon representing an airplane. This thesis attempts to aid the users in their tasks, by determining if interactive visual information could benefit the current system. This study resulted in one prototype, where height was represented in three different ways, one using color coordination, one using different sizes and one mimicked the current numerical representation. These variations were evaluated in a user study, consisting of semi structured interviews along with benchmark tests. None of the suggested visual cues could be demonstrated as more efficient than the current representation, but a majority of participants preferred the version using varying sizes as this was considered more intuitive and held less limitations than the other version. Future research is encouraged as to successfully determine if altitude information can be visually represented for a decreased mental workload.
Denna studie genomfördes vid Totalförsvarets Forskningsinstitut som ett försök att utreda möjligheter och svårigheter med att visuellt presentera information om altitud för flygstridsledare. Flygstridsledare utsätts för stora mängder numerisk information, från ett flertal olika källor simultant. Derad uppgifter utförs under hög stress och kräver stor mental belastning samt situationsmedvetenhet. Idag representeras en stor mängd information visuellt, på flygstridsledarens radarskärm, med undantaget för höjden. Ett objekts altitud på skärmen representeras alltid numeriskt, bredvid ikonen för flygplan. Detta arbete har gjorts i avsikt att hjälpa flygstridsledaren i dennes uppgifter, genom att utreda om interaktiv visuell information kan vara av nytta för deras nuvarande system. Denna studie resulterade i en prototyp, i vilken höjd representerades på tre olika sätt. Genom färg med varierande opacitet, genom olika storlekar på objekten, samt den nuvarande numeriska metoden. Dessa versioner utvärderades i en användarstudie, bestående av semistrukturerade intervjuer samt benchmark test. Ingen av de föreslagna visualiseringarna kunde påvisas mer effektiv än det nuvarande systemet, men en majoritet av deltagarna föredrog versionen med varierande storlekar, eftersom detta ansågs mer intuitivt samt hade färre begränsningar. Vidare studier uppmanas för att med framgång avgöra om altituden kan representeras visuellt, för en minskad mental belastning.

One of the most parts of VOIP management is fault management and, in having a good fault management, finding good mechanisms to detect faults in the network have to be considered.

The main focus of this project is to implement different types of fast fault recovery protocols in networks, especially networks that carry IP telephony. Having a complete understanding of some common link failure detection and fault recovery protocols, such as spanning tree protocol (STP), rapid spanning tree protocol (RSTP) and per-VLAN spanning tree protocol (PVSTP), and also having a complete understanding of three other common techniques for fault detection and fault recovery, such as hot standby routing protocol (HSRP), virtual router redundancy protocol (VRRP) and gateway load balancing protocol (GLBP) will be regarded in the project. We are going to test some fault recovery protocols which can be used in IP telephony networks and choose the best. We intend to focus on this issue in LAN environment in theoretical descriptions and practical implementations.

The final outcome of the thesis is implementation in the Halmstad University’s lab environment to obtain the final result. For doing our thesis, we are going to use some technical tools as hardware tools (Cisco L3 and L2 switches, Routers, IP Phones) and tools which are used for network performance monitoring, like as CommVeiw.

A caracterização das cargas do tráfego é de grande importância para o dimensionamento de pavimentos, bem como para a quantificação do desempenho para fins de gerência de pavimentos. A utilização de abordagens empíricas para determinar os efeitos das cargas do tráfego nas estruturas de pavimentos, datadas dos anos 1960, apresentam sérias limitações, pois seus resultados são válidos somente para os mesmos, ou muito similares, fatores intervenientes que prevaleciam quando do seu desenvolvimento. Os fatores relativos às solicitações do tráfego e às características dos veículos (tipo de eixo, tipo de rodagem, pressão de enchimento dos pneus e tipo de suspensão) são bem diferentes, atualmente, daquelas existentes há 50 anos. Tendo em vista que os modelos de desempenho são importantes ferramentas dos sistemas de gerência de pavimentos (SGP) para prever a evolução da condição ao longo do tempo e/ou tráfego acumulado e, portanto, dependentes de uma consistente caracterização do tráfego, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi analisar os efeitos da caracterização do tráfego sobre o desempenho dos pavimentos, a partir da geração de modelos estatísticos baseados no conceito proposto pelo método da AASHTO 2002, de espectros de carga por eixo dos veículos comerciais de carga, comparando-os com o conceito de equivalência de carga, desenvolvido a partir do AASHO Road Test na década de 1950. Dados de pesagens realizadas no ano de 2008 no Posto de Pesagem de Veículos da SP-160 Rodovia dos Imigrantes, km 28, pista Sul, foram utilizados para o desenvolvimento dos espectros de carga e posterior modelagem. Testes estatísticos e práticos foram realizados para determinar a variabilidade mensal dos Fatores de Veículos (FV) em relação ao valor médio do ano de 2008. Apesar da análise estatística com a aplicação do teste Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) ter apresentado diferenças significativas entre os espectros mensais e anuais, a variação observada nos fatores de tráfego não resultou em diferenças práticas na espessura final do pavimento. Os modelos estatísticos foram desenvolvidos separadamente para cada classe de veículo e de eixos que o compunha, tendo sido usadas distribuições de probabilidade Log-normal e Weibull para modelar os espectros de carga. Os parâmetros dos modelos foram obtidos através do método dos mínimos quadrados, complementado com a realização de testes K-S e Qui-quadrado, destacando-se a obtenção de coeficientes de determinação (R2) superiores a 0,90. A comparação entre os resultados previstos pelos modelos e os dados originais, feita tanto pela abordagem empírica como empírico-mecanística, com uso dos programas computacionais ELSYM5 e MEPDG, evidencia o modelo Weibull como o mais indicado para aplicação em rodovias brasileiras com características de tráfego semelhantes às da Rodovia dos Imigrantes.
The characterization of traffic loads is of great importance for pavement design, as well as for the measurement of performance in a pavement management system. The use of empirical approaches to determine the effects of traffic load on pavement structures, dating from the 1960\'s, presents serious limitations, since its results are just valid for the same or very similar intervening factors that prevailed at the time of its development. The traffic load factors and vehicle characteristics (axle type, tire type, tire inflation pressure, and suspension type) are quite different today from those existing 50 years ago. Given that the performance models are important tools of pavement management systems (PMS) to predict the evolution of pavement condition over time and/or accumulated traffic and therefore dependent on a consistent characterization of the traffic, the objective of this research was to analyze the effects of traffic characteristics on pavement performance through the generation of statistical models based on the concept proposed by the AASHTO 2002 method, axle load spectra of commercial vehicles, comparing them with the concept of load equivalence factor, developed through the AASHO Road Test in the 1950s. Data collected in 2008 in a weighing station located on Immigrant Highway - SP-160, km 28, southern runway, were used for the development of load spectra and subsequent modeling. Practical and statistical tests were performed to determine the variability of monthly vehicle-factors (FV) to the mean value for the year 2008. Despite the statistical analysis, performed by applying the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test, have shown significant differences between the monthly and annual spectra variation, there were not practical differences in the final thickness of the pavement associated to changes in vehicle-factors. Statistical models were developed for each vehicle class and for its axles, having been used Log-normal and Weibull probability distributions to model the load spectra. The model parameters were obtained from the method of least squares, complemented by the KS and chi-square tests, being important to mention that the coefficients of determination (R2) were greater than 0.90. The comparison between the results predicted by the models and the original data, made either by empirical and empiricalmechanistic approaches, with use of computer programs ELSYM5 and MEPDG, shows that the Weibull model is the most suitable for application in Brazilian highways with similar traffic characteristics to the Immigrants Highway.

Inter-cell interference coordination in 3GPP Long Term Evolution system received much attention in recent years. However, most of the studies are based on ideal system with regular hexagon-shaped cell. The indoor environment has special characteristics that the building shape and BS locations are irregular; the traffic load has great variation compared to urban and rural area. So, conventional ICIC scheme may not be used in indoor situation directly. In this thesis, ICIC scheme is employed for indoor environment. Based on different quality of backhaul, static and dynamic schemes will be proposed. The performances of proposed schemes and the performance of system without ICIC will be simulated and compared. At last, how much the improvement of the system can acquire after applying ICIC schemes will be analyzed, and the question about whether it is good to apply ICIC scheme in indoor environment will be answered.

L'analyse et la prévision du comportement des réseaux de transport sont aujourd'hui des éléments cruciaux pour la mise en place de politiques de gestion territoriale. La simulation informatique du trafic routier est un outil puissant permettant de tester des stratégies de gestion avant de les déployer dans un contexte opérationnel. La simulation du trafic à l'échelle d'un ville requiert cependant une puissance de calcul très importante, dépassant les capacité d'un seul ordinateur.Dans cette thèse, nous étudions des méthodes permettant d'effectuer des simulations de trafic multi-agent à large échelle. Nous proposons des solutions permettant de distribuer l'exécution de telles simulations sur un grand nombre de coe urs de calcul. L'une d'elle distribue directement les agents sur les coeurs disponibles, tandis que la seconde découpe l'environnement sur lequel les agents évoluent. Les méthodes de partitionnement de graphes sont étudiées à cet effet, et nous proposons une procédure de partitionnement spécialement adaptée à la simulation de trafic multi-agent. Un algorithme d'équilibrage de charge dynamique est également développé, afin d'optimiser les performances de la distribution de la simulation microscopique.Les solutions proposées ont été éprouvées sur un réseau réel représentant la zone de Paris-Saclay.Ces solutions sont génériques et peuvent être appliquées sur la plupart des simulateurs existants.Les résultats montrent que la distribution des agents améliore grandement les performances de la simulation macroscopique, tandis que le découpage de l'environnement est plus adapté à la simulation microscopique. Notre algorithme d'équilibrage de charge améliore en outre significativement l'efficacité de la distribution de l'environnement
Nowadays, analysis and prediction of transport network behavior are crucial elements for the implementation of territorial management policies. Computer simulation of road traffic is a powerful tool for testing management strategies before deploying them in an operational context. Simulation of city-wide traffic requires significant computing power exceeding the capacity of a single computer.This thesis studies the methods to perform large-scale multi-agent traffic simulations. We propose solutions allowing the distribution of such simulations on a large amount of computing cores.One of them distributes the agents directly on the available cores, while the second splits the environment on which the agents evolve. Graph partitioning methods are studied for this purpose, and we propose a partitioning procedure specially adapted to the multi-agent traffic simulation. A dynamic load balancing algorithm is also developed to optimize the performance of the microscopic simulation distribution.The proposed solutions have been tested on a real network representing the Paris-Saclay area.These solutions are generic and can be applied to most existing simulators.The results show that the distribution of the agents greatly improves the performance of the macroscopic simulation, whereas the environment distribution is more suited to microscopic simulation. Our load balancing algorithm also significantly improves the efficiency of the environment based distribution
