Ramberger, Günter. Structural bearings and expansion joints for bridges. Zurich, Switzerland: International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.2749/sed006.

Abstract:

Bridge superstructures have to be designed to permit thermal and live load strains to occur without unintended restraints. Bridge bearings have to transfer forces from the superstructure to the substructure, allowing all movements in directions defined by the designer. The two functions -transfer the loads and allow movements only in the required directions for a long service time with little maintenance - are not so easy to fulfil. Different bearings for different purposes and requirements have been developed so, that the bridge designer can choose the most suitable bearing.

By the movement of a bridge, gaps are necessary between superstructure and substructure. Expansion joints fill the gaps, allowing traffic loads tobe carried and allowing all expected displacements with low resistance. Expansion joints should provide a smooth transition, avoid noise emission as far as possible and withstand all mechanical actions and chemical attacks (de-icing) for a long time. A simple exchange of all wearing parts and of the entire expansion joint should be possible.

The present volume provides a comprehensive survey of arrangement, construction and installation of bearings and expansion joints for bridges including calculation of bearing reactions and movements, analysis and design, inspection and maintenance. A long list of references deals with the subjects but also with aspects in the vicinity of bearings and expansion joints.

This book is aimed at both students and practising engineers, working in the field of bridge design, construction, analysis, inspection, maintenance and repair.

Abstract:
Using data obtained from the dynamic load testing of bridges a method was developed to evaluate level of the dynamic performance without performing a dynamic load test. In this method a dynamic index of the bridge is calculated. Dynamic index allows to evaluate the dynamic performance level of existing and new structures taking into account such bridge parameters as span length / height ratio, natural frequency, vibration damping coefficient, relative deflection and international roughness index IRI. Dynamic index method can be used by bridge owners and maintainers to determine the dynamic potential of a particular bridge. The maximum allowable values of the dynamic amplification factor for standard prestressed concrete beam bridges were determined. These values were calculated for maximum allowed traffic load in Latvia. The obtained results can be used for the safety assessment of existing and reconstructed reinforced concrete beam bridges.

Abstract:
This chapter details the selection of Octave Chanute to design and build a lasting bridge across the unbridged Missouri River at Kansas City. The offer to bridge the Missouri, the most difficult of all navigable streams, was a compliment for Chanute, but also a formidable challenge to his ambition as a civil engineer. The completion of the bridge called for the construction of about four hundred miles of connecting roads, bringing urbanization to the Kansas frontier. The thirty-seven-year-old Chanute built this rail system and connected it with eastern railroads, bringing profit to both systems. During the first 230 days of operation, 5,263 locomotives had pulled their load across the bridge, and $5,706 had been collected in tolls from street traffic. The chapter also describes Chanute's appointment as chief engineer of the Missouri River, Fort Scott & Gulf Railroad and his involvement in construction of the Kansas City & Santa Fe Railroad, Galveston Railroad, and Atchison & Nebraska Railroad.
