Abstract:
By considering the thirtieth highest hourly volume (30HV) as the design hour volume, this study reexamines a commonly used method of predicting the 30HV as a function of the annual average daily traffice (AADT) volume. Based on Alberta's highway system data, some common limitations of the traditional 30HV–AADT model are pointed out. Also included in the analysis presented is a proposed alternative model which utilizes July/August traffic data to estimate the design hour volume. The alternative model appears to provide more accurate prediction results and it also eliminates the need of subjectively classifying the roads into various groups as required by the 30HV–AADT method. Key words: annual average daily traffice, design hour volume, highway design, road classification, traffic volume counts, transportation.

Abstract:
Dynamic traffic signal control in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) recently has received increasing attention. This paper proposed an adaptive and cooperative multi-agentfuzzy system for a decentralized traffic signal control. The proposed model has three levels of control, the current intersection traffic situation, its neighboring intersections recommendations and a knowledge base, which provides the current intersection traffic pattern. The proposed architecture comprises a knowledge base, prediction module and a traffic observer that provide data to real traffic data preparation module, then a decision-making layer takes decision to how long should the intersection green light be extended. Also every intersection flow is predicted in two different ways: 1- through a recursive algorithm. 2- based on a two stage fuzzy clustering algorithm. The proposed solution is tested with traffic control of a large connected junction and the result obtained is promising in comparison to the conventional fixed sequence traffic signal and to the vehicle actuated traffic signal control strategies which are the most applicable strategies in this area. Also to simulate the proposed traffic control solutions, a Netlogo-based traffic simulator has been developed as the agents’ world which simulates the roads, traffic flow and intersections.

Abstract:
Traffic congestion causes many socio-economic problems in developing nations. One of the main causes of traffic congestion can be attributed to poor design practices. In the last few years, Lahore city has expanded haphazardly where the allocation of resources was done based on political will instead of feasible design practices. This haphazard growth coupled with a poor design resulted in traffic congestion on the main roads of the city. In this study, simulations using different traffic management design strategies were carried out on major roads to check if traffic delays and Level of Service (LOS) can be improved. The most feasible designs based on the simulated results were proposed for the improvement of the existing infrastructure designs. These findings suggested that Akbar Chowk and Jinnah Hospital Intersection have greatly reduced the traffic delay time by 92.97% and 92.67%, respectively. Policymakers can utilize these simulated results for future design guidelines to accommodate the future growth of traffic on these arterial roads.

Abstract:
With the road traffic congestion problems become more and more serious, and the current traffic lights don’t possess the function of revising timely and flexible, it can't meet the requirements of real-time controlling and make the traffic in intersection more efficient. The design of Microcontroller-based traffic signal controller fixes this problem. It based on STC90C51 as CPU solutions; LED lights and digital pipe were used as display module; 8 independent keyboards were used as the only manual input device; Software used the C programming language. The intelligent traffic light system covered the multi-phase and multi-period. So we could choose two-phase/four-phase/six-phase according to the particular road and traffic condition. Besides, it took the special status of emergency vehicles into account. It also had a manual input keyboard so that you could adjust the signal at any time. This design can effectively improve the traffic congestion problem.

With a gradual increase in urban road traffic volume and traffic congestion degree, how to improve and solve the current traffic pressures has been a problem requiring urgent solution. To improve the traffic congestion status in urban road intersections and heighten the road traffic efficiency, the principle of fuzzy control is employed in this paper. Moreover, the multi-phase signal traffic control of intersections is performed together with vehicle queue lengths in lanes corresponding to the key traffic flow, and a traffic signal fuzzy control system is designed. Finally, this paper compares the simulation results between the fuzzy control system designed herein and the existing fixed traffic signal control methods. The comparative test results have shown that the fuzzy control method can well better actual congestion and traffic efficiency at intersections to a greater degree than the fixed timing method does.

Abstract:
This paper proposes the new offset diamond interchange (ODI) as an alternative design which shows potential in mitigating the limitations of failing service interchanges in relation to traffic operation. Vehicle travel time was considered as the primary measure of effectiveness (MOE) for the traffic operation analysis, while the maximum queue lengths were also analyzed. A comprehensive series of VISSIM simulation scenarios was conducted to evaluate the new ODI design in different situations of traffic demand, turning-traffic ratios, traffic distribution, and traffic composition. The results were compared with five existing and four other new interchange designs. The new ODI performed statistically significantly better than all existing designs, including the conventional diamond, parclo A, and the diverging diamond interchange (DDI). The ODI design was found vulnerable in relation to the maximum queue produced in high turning conditions with the unbalanced traffic distribution; however, the threat could be diminished by increasing the storage lengths about 80 ft. Right-of-way (ROW) costs may make the ODI a poor alternative in replacing a standard diamond, but since the ODI fits the footprint of a parclo A it could work well in replacing those interchanges.

This paper analyzes the fairness in traffic network design problem, constructs the average network improvement index to measure fairness, and establishes a bi-level programming model for road traffic network design considering traffic fairness. The upper model includes the optimal total travel time and traffic fairness, and the lower model is the traffic flow allocation model. Then, according to the characteristics of the model, a genetic algorithm is designed to solve the model. Finally, a simple example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the mathematical model and algorithm. Abstract:
In response to heavy demand for emergency logistics, an approach based on hierarchical network theory is introduced to solve the complexity of highway transportation network. It groups the traffic network into subprime networks and backbone networks on which a virtual local area network is designed accordingly to fulfill such function as information exchange and road condition renewal between forwarding stations. Compared with flat networks, the hierarchical traffic network design is in a good position to speed up routing, to conduct real-time monitoring and data-exchange, and consequently enhances efficiency of emergency logistics.
