ABSTRACT: With the end of the war most of the heritage essential to the defense of Portugal is abandoned and left without any plan for the future. It is intended to understand the evolution of the defensive system in Lisbon, presenting its origin, its function, where they were located and the characteristics of the military architecture. Taking into account their historical past, the main objective is to preserve and give a new use to the batteries of Alpena and Raposeira, the military road that unites them, and also to value the natural surroundings and take advantage of the topographic position where they are located. The creation of a creative hub starts from the need to promote and revitalize the area of Trafaria, stimulate the arrival of new residents and the local population, creating spaces for exhibitions, studios, temporary homes and places to admire the view.

ABSTRACT: Military heritage profoundly marks the cities we live in, being spread throughout the Portuguese territory. Many of these structures are obsolete in their use, requiring urgent intervention, not only in their construction as in the narrative they develop in the city they are inserted. In this way, this work develops an analysis and survey on a territorial scale of these structures, studying their framework and historical relevance. The object of study of this master thesis, the Trafaria’s Fortress, is a unique place located in Tagus river, which results from a set of events and layers of stories that followed the Trafaria. Curently abandoned, it emerged the aim of reflecting on the recovery of this building, preserving its memory and making it a creative hub in the region of Trafaria, creating a new narrative for this village. Therefore, a theoretical reflection on the heritage and the way we should intervene in was developed. At the same time, we also reflected on the power of creativity to regenerate cities, in creating buildings that promots it. This reflection resulted in a proposal to reuse the old Fortress, attributing this object a new use incorporated into the urban life of Trafaria.

Full textIt was on the early decades of the twentieth century that the human occupation of the coast in Portugal showed a great increase. The intense occupation of the section Trafaria - Cova do Vapor - Costa de Caparica led to serious consequences; the lack of territorial planning; the sharp coast erosion. The anthropic actions together with the eustatic variations represent a high risk for the Portuguese coast, which becomes vulnerable to erosion processes. The objective of this dissertation is to present the natural and anthropic events that have contributed over the years to the evolution of this particular section of Portuguese coastline. Pictures, maps and descriptions were used to access the natural and anthropic evolution of this section. Since the 40s of the twentieth century, this area suffered sharp erosion processes. This coast erosion increase was due to the fast anthropogenic evolution of this section as a consequence of its occupation, firstly by fishermen and later by the increased demand on the south bank of the Tagus River for touristic use (bathing area). The consequences of the human activities increase are: lack of territorial planning; aggravation of natural risks; artificiality of the shoreline; emerging coastal defense works; industrialization; progressive shoreline’s retreat

ABSTRACT:The rehabilitation of preexisting structures is an increasingly present theme in our society, especially where the territory is strongly characterized by vacant buildings and empty spaces that deserve a more attentive look. With the post-war context, many were the military structures that fell in disuse and, consequently, in abandonment, resulting in a large range of historical and artistic patrimony which should be targeted by projects that return it back to the city and public respect, rescuing it from the decay it currently they currently face. Taking this topic into account, the present work focuses in the necessity of reusing the vacant military heritage, that shows a big potential for the urban regeneration and for the development of new centralities. The main focus is Trafaria’s territory that, besides it’s historic significance and the military heritage it holds, faces integration problems towards the city and also the aging of the population it shelters, factors that lead to urban isolation and degradation. Thus, the project aims rhe requalification and consolidation of Trafaria’s riverfront and the rehabilitation of Trafaria’s Fort through the implementation of new uses, so as to attract new population to this part of the city, boosting the local socioeconomic development. This intervention aims the reintegration of the military structures in it’s surroundings and in the local community and, simultaneously, the military’s fort valorization and memory.

ABSTRACT: Trafaria is an area of great historical, cultural and even social interest. However, due to a number of factors, this once thriving fishing town, became increasingly vulnerable, less attractive and mostly unknown to the population in general. The image of the hundred year old riverside town, protected by the natural hillsides, changed into the image of a passageway town or a transit site causing it to lose its true character and identity. As with so many other forgotten and neglected places, Trafaria calls for awareness, understanding and analysis, and needs to be reinstalled in the major central urban areas and recognized as a place of historic, cultural and scenic significance. In this proposal, there is an intention to reverse the process of depopulation and detachment of the area. Architecture, as a means of location renewal and regeneration, operates as a fast response system to the various multi-ranged challenges and problems that are present in this work field. This proposal intends to grasp and understand the urban network and the various problems therein, thorough the study of the dynamics of urban settings and, from that analysis, attempt to revitalize a series of abandoned spaces. Together with the regeneration of the old Fort which used to be the prison of Trafaria, a building originally responsible for the human occupation and maintenance of that place, there is a plan to create a public central hub, a house of the arts able to meet the needs of the local population, of both an old and a young community, as well as to capture outside interest, regenerating this town and allowing it to become an attractive place in contact with major urban centers.

Full textThis work presents the historical and architectural analysis of Trafaria’ military batteries, and their state of conservation.Raposeira I, Raposeira II and Alpena batteries are part of a set of coast defense fortifications located on both banks of the Tagus River, near the Capital. They were built in the late nineteenth century to improve the military defense system during a period of political and social instability across the world. Many older buildings are found to be inventoried, preserved and restored.Trafaria’s batteries, being newer, are totally abandoned, in a bad conservation condition, and not inventoried. Despite the advanced state of degradation, batteries maintain their physical characteristics, integrity and authenticity. It is important to question the reasons for abandonment, evaluate the historical and architectural value and contribute to the safeguard of this architectural heritage. The elaborated historical analysis focuses on bibliographic, iconographic and cartographic research. The architectural analysis and the state of the conservation is based on data collected from fieldwork, site visits and oral information from the public entities that manage this heritage asset. Based on international standards, it is recommended the conservation of baterries for public utility purposes. Knowing that the first measure to safeguard heritage is recognize it, it is proposed batteries inventory sheets, based on the model suggest by SIPA - Sistema de Inventário do Património Arquitetónico, managed by Direção Geral do Património Cultural.

Full textThis work presents a historical, architectural analysis, and the state of conservation of the architectural and urban heritage of Trafaria, in particular its chalets. Trafaria is a parish beloging to the municipality of Almada. It appreciated from 1565, when Cardinal D. Henrique had a quarantine site built. It gained importance thanks to its geographical position, which enhanced the military function and seaside resort. Despite several international recommendations that encourage minimal intervention and call for the maintenance and conservation of historic buildings, in Trafaria many of these buildings find themselves abandoned, especially the military heritage. To combat this situation, several rehabilitation support programs have been created, mainly for housing. Nowadays the parish potential for tourism increases, in sequence of the massification of tourism in Lisbon. The study analyzes the state of conservation of Trafaria and its ability to respond to this phenomenon, to welcome tourism and a new population resulting from the gentrification process in Lisbon. The methodology is based on bibliographic and documentary research, field work and data analysis. Were analysed works dedicated to the history of Trafaria. Afterwords, the field work includes in situ analysis, photographic survey, and also chalets geometry survey. This research contributes to the knowledge of the parish, in particular its military and summer heritage, when Trafaria was a seaside resort. It is concluded that the priority measure for conservation of this heritage is its knowledge, which is why inventories are proposed. The analysis of the state of conservation, shows that the architectural heritage maintains its authenticity and integrity, including the rehabilitated chalets. Thus, it is important to study, inventory, and conserve, while respecting the historical and architectural value that still exists.

Clams (Venerupis pullastra) are one of the most consumed bivalves in Portugal. In the present investigation the chemical and microbiological quality, of the clam captured in Trafaria, was evaluated by control of pH and of the count of fecal pollution indicators, such as Enterobacteriaceae and spoilage indicators like acid lactic bacteria, total count of viable microorganisms and H2S producing bacteria . Clams were stored at different temperatures (4ºC and 9ºC), and its chemical and microbiological quality was evaluated (through the techniques above) over time given the varying temperatures. It was determined that it would be beneficial to use the temperature of 4°C for storage periods longer than 2 days.

Full textIn view of the sociocultural dynamics from the implantation of Large Scale Projects that change in a short period of time the territory of small communities, it is pertinent to identify the main virtual and real spaces where the community creates conditions to social participation and non-formal environmental education. The presented study took place in the Trafaria community localized in the Tejo river mouth, the main river of the Iberian peninsula, and reveals empirical data about the social movements generated from two large constructions, one has already been implemented and the other is in phase of lease study, which have promoted the improvement of the technical knowledge associated to the traditional knowledge in search of a land management with greater social participation. The focus of human ecology was used throughout the investigation process due to its interdisciplinary and holistic character that makes it possible to find answers to the concerns and applicability of the case study about the social organization of the community when global interests are in conflict with local interests. Primary data were collected from the application of quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with local residents following the composition of a representative statistical sample for the entire population of Trafaria.

Full textThis work seeks to contextualize the heritage built in the present. Therefore, it uses the analysis of literary works, and relies on observational criticism to base the intervention on a ruin (practical case), trying to clarify a classification that, even today, is still in conflict. Privileging the rossian perspective, the monument is approached as an indisputable founder of the city, whose patrimonial value is historical, temporarily aesthetic and susceptible to subjective and memorial appreciation of the subject. Contributing to the evolution of the city, it is understood that the monument carries a collective memory that reinforces its individuality as an urban fact. Associated with its identity, the technical and architectural component of the monument strengthens the public bond, fixes an epoch and makes it timeless. Memory, a fundamental element of connection between times, observes the historical city, symbol of reference, updates it and subdues it to the present, to the economy of industry and to the core of real estate speculation. However, it shows its individuality, deposited in the particularity of each monument, however overshadowed by the patrimonial aesthetic fetish. It is up to the architect to consciously and unconsciously link, body and work, to trigger sensations, whose emotional value is found in each observer’s memory. The individual memory of the monument is born, then, of his body and, unconditionally, of his soul, as a mental and singular process of the artist. In this creative participation, the architect seeks to escape from ephemerality and, specially, the foundations for his timelessness.

Full textFrom design to visual arts, from public art to performances, architecture is a subject that comprehends a whole spectrum of activities that transcend its typical borders of interaction. The intersection of these different areas comes, more and more, from an informal network of people that form social and cultural groups with the intention of changing or evoking reactions on a subject matter, a space or an object. Regarding these associations of people with common interests, that are organized according to the following categories: labor, cultural or urban, it is studied, in the Portuguese context, their capability to boost their intentions and interventions to the urban environment, through their collective social strength and the sharing of their knowledge between the participants. Afterwards, it is also studied the associative actions of local collectives in Trafaria. It’s noted that individually their urban impact is low, whereas when collaborating with other collectives, mainly from outside of Trafaria, the impact is larger and more prominent. A more focused analysis on these participative and associative interventions from multiple collectives working together finds a relation with reoccupying and reactivating spaces left abandoned, such as in the central area of Trafaria, and unoccupied and unused spaces at the informal areas of Cova do Vapor and 2º Torrão. In the project part of this work, it is proposed a continuity of this train of thought applied to Trafaria’s Military Quarters, which meets the right conditions for a new occupation of associative and co-working activities.

Full textThis study is a reflection on the relationship between furniture, as an integral element in the thinking of architectural space, and architectural project, in the programmatic context of libraries. In a first instance, the factual existence of this relationship in the extension of architectural theory and its importance in the context of project practice is questioned. The study of the relationship between furniture and architectural space is premised on the study case of the Municipal Library and Archives of Grândola (2012/2016- ), a project of the atelier Matos Gameiro Arquitectos. The study and deepening of this project, of an atelier whose relevance exceeds the national context, is taken as an opportunity to explore the relationship between furniture and architectural space, seeking to understand the role of furniture in the design process of architecture today. This work is concluded with the confrontation between theoretical reflection and practical action, in the sense that this Theoretical Component of the Final Project of Architecture informs and bases the Practical Component, which consists in the conception of a new library for Trafaria.

Full textThis study aims to contribute to a theory that explores the relationship between architecture and literature. From the work of José Saramago, namely the novel ( ), and by promoting an analytical reading of the described architectural spaces, the study seeks, in the first instance, to understand under what circumstances architecture is portrayed in literary texts. Subsequently, the themes addressed by Saramago and those discussed by his contemporaries architects were placed in counterpoint, thus carrying out an analysis of the existing parallels between literary and architectural production. The addressed themes, transversal to the two disciplines, are related to a process of industrialization and its consequences in the territory that are reflected in the transformation of the rural and urban and the ways of inhabiting the space. The area comprehended between Trafaria and Cova do Vapor, as na analysed existing territory, verifies the relevance of these issues in the current time. The lessons learned from the reflections of Saramago and the architects of his generation are decoded and interpreted in order to translate them into tools for a coherent architectural practice. Through the simultaneous study of these two art languages, the work carried out allows a reflection on themes of relevance to contemporary projectual practice such as memory and a sense of local identity.
