Abstract:
This paper will explore some of the pedagogical, social and political issues surrounding a 1991 decision to dose an urban school servicing Aboriginal students in the Northern Territory. In order to contextualise the discussion, a brief description of recent State and Federal government policy documents will be provided, along with a description of the school. This will be followed by an analysis of the decision and subsequent events. Some comparisons will be made with similar events and other court cases in Australia and overseas. This discussion highlights the conflict between the Federal government's policy of self-determination and the Territory government's assimilationist practices as well as the discourses used to override the parents' aspirations to keep the school open.

International Chinese five-year junior college students were examined with regard to the status of actual social support and perceived stress, the relationship between actual social support and perceived stress, and the status of a social network, in order to explain how actual social support operates. Sixty-four students from a population of 313 responded to the questionnaires which included the Actual Social Support Scale (Jou, 1994), the Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen, Kamarck, & Mermelstein, 1983), and the Measure of Social Support Network Scale (Blyth & Traeger, 1988). Results showed that students in Taiwan exhibit higher perceived stress and experience lower actual social support, higher actual social support may result in lower perceived stress, and the students' social network was limited to segregation with international Chinese college students in Taiwan. This suggests that more social contact with local people may help students to enlarge their social network, thus offering better social support for alleviating perceived stress.

This article presents an archaeological inquiry into the early histories of Quality of Life (QoL) measures, and takes this as an occasion to rethink the concept of the ‘medical model of disability’. Focusing on three instruments that set the ground for the emergence of QoL measures, namely, the Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS, 1948), and the classification of functional capacity as a diagnostic criterion for heart diseases (Bainton, 1928) and as a supplementary aid to therapeutic criteria in rheumatoid arthritis ( Steinbrocker, Traeger, and Batterman, 1949 ) – I discuss how medicine, throughout the emergence of QoL, began to expand its gaze beyond the confines of the body to what that body does in daily life. Building upon Armstrong et al.’s notion of ‘distal symptoms’ (2007) and Wahlberg’s idea of ‘knowledge of living’ (2018), I propose the notion of disabilitization to encapsulate this expansion of the clinical gaze, through which medicine has come to articulate diseases and their treatments in new ways, and in so doing, has inadvertently created disability as a new kind of knowledge category in itself – a category that is defined not through its reduction to mere pathology, but through its dispersal into everyday life. I present this concept not as a periodization, but as a provocative discontinuity with the totalizing history assumed within the medical model of disability, and in so doing, ask what, in fact, holds ‘the medical model’ together, and whether there might be other ways of understanding medicine’s complex relationship to disability than what the concept of the medical model allows us to envisage.

Abstract:
The thick filaments of the nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans, arising predominantly from the body-wall muscles, contain two myosin isoforms and paramyosin as their major proteins. The two myosins are located in distinct regions of the surfaces, while paramyosin is located within the backbones of the filaments. Tubular structures constitute the cores of the polar regions, and electron-dense material is present in the cores of the central regions (Epstein, H.F., D.M. Miller, I. Ortiz, and G.C. Berliner. 1985. J. Cell Biol. 100:904-915). Biochemical, genetic, and immunological experiments indicate that the two myosins and paramyosin are not necessary core components (Epstein, H.F., I. Ortiz, and L.A. Traeger Mackinnon. 1986. J. Cell Biol. 103:985-993). The existence of the core structures suggests, therefore, that additional proteins may be associated with thick filaments in C. elegans. To biochemically detect minor associated proteins, a new procedure for the isolation of thick filaments of high purity and structural preservation has been developed. The final step, glycerol gradient centrifugation, yielded fractions that are contaminated by, at most, 1-2% with actin, tropomyosin, or ribosome-associated proteins on the basis of Coomassie Blue staining and electron microscopy. Silver staining and radioautography of gel electrophoretograms of unlabeled and 35S-labeled proteins, respectively, revealed at least 10 additional bands that cosedimented with thick filaments in glycerol gradients. Core structures prepared from wild-type thick filaments contained at least six of these thick filament-associated protein bands. The six proteins also cosedimented with thick filaments purified by gradient centrifugation from CB190 mutants lacking myosin heavy chain B and from CB1214 mutants lacking paramyosin. For these reasons, we propose that the six associated proteins are potential candidates for putative components of core structures in the thick filaments of body-wall muscles of C. elegans.

<p class="AbstractHead">Previous analyses of the Spanish deictic verbs <em>venir </em>‘to come’, <em>ir</em> ‘to go’, <em>traer</em> ‘to bring’ and <em>llevar</em> ‘to take’ have drawn upon Fillmore’s (1975) series of lectures on deixis in noting that speakers of Spanish forbid the use of the verbs <em>venir </em>and <em>traer</em> to express movement towards the hearer. Under this egocentric view (Beinhauer, 1940; Ibañez, 1983), the Spanish verbs <em>venir</em> and <em>traer</em> can only be used to describe movement towards the speaker’s location. Little experimental research has been done, however, to confirm the extent to which heritage and second language (L2) speakers of the language conform to this pattern. The present study gathered data on the deictic preferences of bilingual, heritage speakers of Spanish and English (HS) and compared this data with that of L2 and monolingual native speakers of Spanish (NS). 74 participants, consisting of 12 NS, 34 HS, and 29 L2 speakers, assessed the grammaticality of 20 stimulus items that contained prescriptively correct and incorrect usages of the deictic verbs <em>venir, traer, llevar</em> and <em>ir</em>. Both HS and L2 speakers made significantly more errors than NS when the direction expressed in the stimulus was oriented towards the hearer, suggesting both groups may benefit from instruction on this topic.</p>

La propuesta de establecer la colegiación obligatoria parece gozar de consenso en la profesión jurídica mexicana. Si bien, coincidimos en la relevancia social que tiene el ejercicio de la abogacía y, por ende, en la necesidad de su regulación, consideramos necesario traer al contexto mexicano preguntas y advertencias que ya han surgido en otros lugares sobre la conveniencia de la regulación (como proyecto en sí mismo), los objetivos que persigue y la mejor forma de alcanzar esos objetivos. De acuerdo con lo anterior, el presente artículo, más que constituirse como un aporte original, busca traer al contexto mexicano insumos básicos para una discusión más rica y compleja sobre la regulación de la profesión jurídica.

Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo describir los usos del verbo ‘traer’ en eventos imperfectivos en el español de México, con el apoyo en la Gramática de Construcciones de Goldberg (1995) y en un estudio previo sobre el ‘traer’ estativo, de Rábago y Alarcón, 2012. Se exploran algunas aristas sintácticas, semánticas y pragmáticas acerca de la relación entre los participantes: Sujeto, Objeto y sus Complementos. Se analizan ejemplos de dos córpora de registro oral: El Corpus Sociolingüístico de la Ciudad de México y El Corpus del Habla de Monterrey. Se muestra la siguiente tendencia: los objetos alienables aparecen con complementos predicativos, no así con objetos inalienables, donde la estructura preferida se combina con complementos adverbiales o predicados secundarios que habilitan y, en algunos casos, refuerzan la situación discursiva.

Evaluation of the fungicidal properties of essential oils from Leptospermum scoparium and Azadirachta indica in relation to selected fungi causing wood decay. The publication presents the results of evaluation of the fungicidal effect of two essential oils from Leptospermum scoparium (manuka) and zadirachta indica (neem) on fungi that cause the decomposition of Trametes versicolor and Coniophora puteana wood. Research results indicate that the growth of the tested fungi is clearly inhibited with the participation of the highest concentrations of essential oils used. At the same time, it was found that the action of neem oil was stronger compared to the Traetes versicolor fungus. In contrast, manuka essential oil has a stronger inhibitory effect on the growth of Coniophora puteana.

The effect of three foliar fungicides. i.e., Bayloton 25 WP, Dithane M-45, and Funaben K. on the mycoflora associated with the seeds of spring <i>Triticum aestivum</i> cv. Kolibri cultivated in the field was investigated. The fungicide which highly reduced the number of both fungal colonies and species was Funaben K. Of the fungi most frequently occurring. Only Funaben K applied on the seeds reduced the proportion of seeds with <i>Alternaria alternata, Cladosporium</i> spp.. and <i>Septoria nodorum</i>. In contrast. seeds from plants traeted with Funaben K harboured significantly more colonies of non-sporulating fungi.

An accurate deseription of the wood structure of Thottea siliquosa is presented for the first time. Earlier deseriptions for this species were based on ineorreetly identified sampies. Wood is diffuse-porous with distinet growth rings. Vessels are small , solitary, in radial multiples and also in clusters, forming a distinet radial pattern. Perforations are simple, intervessel pits small, alternate without vestures. Vaseular traehe ids are present. Axial parenehyma is diffuse and diffuse-in-aggregates. Rays are very high and broad, heterogeneous. Fibres thick-walled and non-septate. Oil eells are absent.

La búsqueda continua de soluciones a los problemas de la agricultura, tales como el desabasto de semillas, plagas, rendimiento de los cultivos, entre otros, ha llevado a la ciencia a desarrollar nuevas estrategias para mejorar las actividades del campo y uno de estos avances son los organismos genéticamente modificados (OGM); sin embargo, la introducción de estos organismos podría traer consecuencias no deseadas, como el caso del maíz en México, que podría ocasionar la pérdida de diversidad del maíz por la alteración del ADN de las especies nativas del país. La legislación es una de las herramientas más importantes para reducir al mínimo los riesgos que podrían traer consigo los OGM. En el presente trabajo se analizó la ley de bioseguridad para organismos genéticamente modificados en México, con el fin de determinar la eficiencia de la misma, utilizando la metodología checklist por medio de un cuestionario diseñado especialmente para este caso particular. Al término de la evaluación se determinó que la legislación en materia de bioseguridad tiene una eficiencia media y que el problema de la bioseguridad para el maíz en México es falta de certeza de los estudios de riesgo y la deficiente planeación para el establecimiento de programas de monitoreo y vigilancia para los cultivos autorizados así como también para la evaluación de impactos ambientales en zonas ya contaminadas.

De nuestras búsquedas en la bibliografía nacional no hemos podido encontrar ningún caso, a pesar de que creemos que deben existir y que no han sido documentados. Por esto justificamos la presentación en nuestro país paro iniciar la casuística. Hemos querido traer al 29 Congreso Peruano este interesante caso que nos enseña que todas las piezas operatorias, lo mismo que los legrados y las piezas expulsadas espontáneamente, deben tener la sanción del histopatólogo. Esto parece banal, pero no siempre se cumple y por ello es conveniente insistir.
