Full textAll the languages do not have the same tools to answer the terminological challenge caused by the advent of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), and especially Internet. The outdatedness of the tools in use for lexical creation in Arabic as well as the vulgarizing of specialized terminology could block the renewal of this language. This observation arises the issue of "denomination", i. E. The conceptual structuring of technical terms, as a preliminary stage to neology and to translation. The analysis of the problems related to translation led us to treat the various types of processes resorted by the translators to render the 36 items of our Arabic corpus. We located six of them: semantic loan, descriptive neology, “direct loan”, adapted or modified loan, “loanblend” and “loanshift”. All have a more or less close relationship with terminological loan, but they do not have the same value from a traductological point of view

Full textAuthor-translators are key actors of literary life, whose oeuvre exemplifies the complex interactions inherent in literary creation and in cultural formations in general. To concentrate on this figure makes it possible to combine close textual analysis with the investigation of the dynamics of cultural exchange.The present thesis studies the work of two emblematic 20th-century poet-translators: Yves Bonnefoy’sand Paul Celan’s Shakespeare translations are presented and analysed in their role for the poetics of both authors. The thesis draws essentially on close readings of a choice of translations, but it also takes into account other sources which help elucidate the Shakespeare reception of the two poets.While Celan insists on the irreducible difference between original and translation, Bonnefoy’s Shakespeare reception consists of a process of identification. For both poets, however, Shakespeare translation is essentially an auto-reflexive affair: through their confrontation with Shakespeare,Bonnefoy and Celan develop their poetic projects and position themselves in their own historical contexts. In both cases, therefore, Shakespeare translation results in a specific fusion of voices, which integrates Shakespeare into the author-translator’s own poetic universe

Full textDuring the 15th century, the attraction of the Decameron on both some of the most prominent figures of humanism (Antonio Loschi, Leonardo Bruni, Enea Silvio Piccolomini, Leon Battista Alberti, or Bartolomeo Facio) and some lesser authors (such as Filippo Beroaldo, Benedetto Colucci, and Francesco Tedaldi) gave rise to a whole corpus of original stories and Latin translations of isolated short stories by Boccace, which testifies of the cross-fertilization at work between vernacular and humanist cultures. In the context of the 15th century, more particularly of 15h century literature written in the vernacular, which was marked by the propensity of short stories to be rooted in popular tradition, the humanist corpus is characterized by the willingness of its authors to bring the genre to a higher level. As regards the style, Latin prose, which is highly reminiscent of antiquity, is called on to elevate the writing, while from the point of view of the content and the goals to be reached, putting the stress on the historical and educational dimension of short stories is to ennoble the genre

Full textNigeria lacks schools of translation and, as a result, most of the translation work there is to be done has to be handled by totally untrained people, mainly foreign-language graduates. Given this situation, our study proposes the creation of a translation seminar within nigeria's departments of modern languages so that the students registered in these departments will no longer leave the university without learning at least the most basic and essential things about professional translation. These proposals are contained in the last part of the study which is divided into five sections. The first section describes the linguistic situation which prevails in nigeria while the second part takes a look at the differences that exist between the translation exercices done while learning a foreign language and translation as practised by professionals. The third section is concerned with the teaching of translation. It is in this section that we try to determine the kind of training that is really capable of teaching people how to translate. The fourth section concerns itself with the issue of determining the extent to which students who are still studying languages can be said to qualify for training in the field of translation

Full textThe overall objective of this thesis is to contribute to the development of knowledge on cultural and musical life in the 1920s. Based on the work of Roméo Beaudry, a repertoire of songs typically associated with the culture of the United States can serve as a milestone in the history of the French-Canadian popular song. In this regard, the first two chapters describe the locations of song production and reception with a focus on the role of music distribution. Habit changes at the beginning of the twentieth century would have a significant impact on the development of relations between auditors, works, reception venues and media. Chapter 1 describes how these relations have shaken geographical, language and generic boundaries while increasing musical diversity and offering a wider music circulation. Chapter 2 suggests that dynamic and complex factors such as leisure time and listening habits may have altered the reception of popular songs. The plurality of locations and medias also contributed to the formation of a heterogeneous public. Noting the abundance of popular music in the United States and the numerous songs translated into French, the second part of the thesis shows that this imposing repertoire can mean something other than Americanization, something other than a form of assimilation. In Chapter 3, translation, literature and musicology studies provide analysis models that allow the identification of the transformation process leading to a song’s translation. The adaptation of Gérard Genette’s transtextuality shows that the transposition of a text and the transcription of a melody may maintain or radically change the meaning of a song. In Chapter 4, the model is applied on three specific songs. At the outcome, Beaudry is defined as an important player in the world of French-Canadian popular songs and it is shown how translation and imitation can lead to a creative appropriation of a work reflecting both local and continental cultures.

Full textThis thesis suggests thinking about potential to carry out a bilingual vocabulary, no in standard language but in variations regional language, namely, between Cuban Spanish and regional French of French Antilles. Besides this theoretical approach the overall plan of this thesis is to offer a concrete proposal of this bilingual vocabulary and to explain principles and the main directions epistemological and methodological. The objective is to give to translators, who enter in delicate initiative translation of literary works, in which reside a “interlanguage” (French/Creole or Castillan/Cuban), a perfectible tool which can to make easier their translation's work, considered as a new creation. In face, the “inter linguistics” dimension and the “inter cultural” dimension of those literatures are doing of the writing language a real style. This is why translators have to invent strategies of translation so as to respect this style. The translation of those literary works forms a “sinuous road” for the translator. A vocabulary creation could help the translator who would like preserved the “inter linguistics” dimension and the “inter cultural” dimension of those literatures. Using a corpus of Cuban’s texts which have a potential “inter linguistics” and “inter cultural”, Biografia de un cimarrôn of Miguel Bamet, Cuentos negros de Cuba of Lydia Cabrera, Écue-Yamba-Ô of Alejo Carpentier, Cecilia Valdés o la soma del àngel of Cirilo Villaverde, and a novel from Martinique, Ravines du devant-jour of Raphaël Confiant, which received the literary prize Casa de las Américas in 1993. To provoke the interest of our comparative approach, we underline lexical variations of Cuban Spanish regarding standard Spanish, and lexical variations of regional French of French Antilles regarding standard French. This comparative approach brought out neologisms, archaisms and borrowings are the cause of those variations regional language. Conceming variation of regional French of French Antilles, the mutual influence between Creole and French are also the cause of this variation regional language.This comparative approach evidenced too historical, cultural and linguistic relations between those two islands: Martinique and Cuba. Factors linked with the history, the fauna, the flora, the African presence, but especially the principal problem of the appointment of the island’s realities has kindled a reflection about the translation of words in Cuban Spanish and regional French of French Antilles.Actually, the comparison of Spanish’s translation of Ravines du devant-jour and the comparison of French’s translation of Biografia de un cimarrôn, enabled reveal obstacles specific to the translations of those literary works, as soon as the project was to preserve the coefficient of “caribeanity”. In this way, we could propose lexical similarities between those two variations regional language.Epistemological and methodological dimensions are an essential section of this research, but the practical end is important too

Full textThe expanding communication between France and Russia requires additional tools for translation. However, only a few lexicographic resources are dedicated to the Russian language. This thesis aims to develop a new approach of the translation of Russian economic documents into French; the study emphasizes the importance of phraseological resources derived from genuine documents. It presents, therefore, three constituents: the creation of a corpus of documents, the detailed description of the structure of the documents and their terminology and the analysis of the bilingual phraseological units (PU) extracted from the texts. The PU are analysed from a semantic point of view; an organised system of concepts is used to tabulate the units. They can be found through their lexical items (listed in alphabetical order) or through their meaning (using a set of concepts). Both ways to access the units are of great assistance to the translator

Full textCommonplace within the historiography of this artistic and literary movement. By moving the chronological cursor towards the 1789-1830 period, that is between the end of Ancien Régime anglomania and the accepted date of the romantic triumph in France, this dissertation deals with the conditions of appearance of hundreds of artworks borrowing their subjects from within a corpus of more than forty British authors, from Macpherson and Smith - who unveiled Ossian’s poems to Europe - toLord Byron, Sir Walter Scott and William Shakespeare. Many of these works of art could have been localised, or are known through various testimonies, and their study allows us to observe the heterogeneousness of the relevant artists’ profiles, trainings and motivations. By applying an analytical pattern designed to use tools forged by reception studies, translation theory and comparative literature, it is possible to determine that the reception of literary texts in the visual arts proceeds through four phases :diffusion, adaptation, appropriation and repercussion. Placing this artistic production within the sociocultural and economical context of its time reveals a less idealized image of some «gothic» romanticism, the deep complexity of the contemporary French artistic scene which sees the birth of bothromantic imagination and imaginary romanticism

Full textThe translation and reception of French monographs of comparative literature in China has been going on for a hundred years, it is an important part of the study on the translation of Western literary theories. This thesis mainly sorts out and describes the history, status quo and characteristics of the translation and reception of French monographs of comparative literature in China, trying to find out how the philosophy, core concepts and research methods of French comparative literature fit into the Chinese context, how they participate in the discipline construction of Comparative Literature in China, how they contact and merge with pluralistic Chinese literary creations, and how they are enriched and perfected in a brand new literary field. The thesis consists of two parts, including six chapters, the introduction and the conclusion. The introduction part emphasizes that the current research lacks a comprehensive review and theoretical reflections on the translation process of French comparative literature monographs. In view of this, this thesis attempts to describe the basic trajectory, development and characteristics of the translation of French comparative literature monographs in China, highlight the initiative and creativity of Chinese scholars in the process of translation and reception, show the dual value of theoretical travel to the recipients and the theory itself. The first part of the thesis consists of Chapter One, Chapter Two and Chapter Three, which correspond respectively to the first, second and third phase of the history of translation. Based on Edward Said’s “theoretical travel” and Anthony Pym’s method to construct the history of translation, the first part shows the context faced by the translation of French comparative literature monographs in different periods.The second part is composed of Chapter Four, Chapter Five and Chapter Six. Chapter Four focuses on the overall understanding and acceptance of French comparative literature in China, discusses the connotation of the term “French School”, the image and role of French comparative literature scholars, shows Chinese scholars’ identification for the main values of French comparative literature and the interpretation of the core concepts.To conclude, this thesis helps to reveal the important role of translation activities in the development, construction and reinterpretation of national literature, and shows the multiple appearances and possibilities of the same theory in the different cultural spaces and historical contexts. Full textThis work begins with the analysis of the invented languages in the European society starting from the second half of the XIXth century. Those auxiliary languages, as opposed to those named natural, have some characteristics which sometimes can assimilate or, in other cases, can differentiate those languages. Moreover, the analysis highlights how they were publicised at the time of their creation or in some cases as well as in these days, in order to motivate the learners, from different countries, to study those new languages. The analysis is then focused on the linguistic creation in the fiction of the literature with a large plurilinguistic corpus. Depending on the texts, some of the new languages take inspiration from real languages while some others differentiate from the real world languages, taking the reader into another universe. The last part of the analysis presents some cases of translations of the invented languages in literature, and for few of them the comparison of more than one version. Some authors concentrate the new language in specific parts of the text or for a special vocabulary whilst others assign this language to a character throughout all the text. The thesis ends with the presentation of three authors who play with the possibilities of their written language and shows what the results of the translations of those texts are

Full textOur thesis project is to study maritime specialized terminology in two countries of the Middle East, Syria and Lebanon. It traces the general history of the language and its role in the Arab countries in general and in Syria and Lebanon in particular. This work shows that the evolution of marine sciences has given rise to many new words for the new realities and discoveries. But languages do not have the same tools to meet the scientific challenges, and Arabic shows failed facing the proliferation of all these new terms. It discusses the problems of the Arab scientific term deal with the advance of anglicisms in scientific fields. Arabic creates words by conventional modes of lexical creations, while its scientific terms are mostly created by layer or translation of other languages such as English or French. Research in Syria and Lebanon helped develop a comparison on the teaching of science subjects, and draw conclusions in order to improve education in Syria. In this work, a hundred of terminology records of maritime terms are designed to help translators and terminologists. We have the idea of taking ground on this research to prepare our future project, a trilingual maritime glossary (English, French, Arabic) that encompasses the different terms of maritime activities

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to study the influence of European literature on the works of Mohammad-Ali Djamalzadeh and especially on "Il était une fois" (Yeki bud yeki nabud) whose unique success in 1921 left a lasting mark on Iranian society. From that date, Iranian literature opened up to western culture and entered modernity. Romantism and Realism are extremely tools to identify the origins of western influence on Djamalzadeh. A comparative study between "La visite de minuit" and "Atala" by Chateaubriand on the one hand and "Le vagabond" by Guy de Maupassant and "Le persan est du sucre" and "La dernière classe" by Alphonse Daudet on the other hand is therefore quite relevant. Djamalzadeh's attempt to reconcile the Iranian mindset with European literature is linked to the development of a new simpler style of writing. Indeed "L'humaine tragédie" and "Putois" by Anatole France were discovered by Iranian readers as adaptations or free translations. Classicism also influenced Djamalzadeh deeply either through the moral inspiration of classical writers, or through the choice of social themes. "L'avare" by Molière and Schiller's plays have been translated into Iranian within the framework of an educational project. Modern Iranian literature then gives a voice to European literature, thanks to Djamalzadeh. This thesis is made up of three parts whose main aim is to stress to what extent European literature has influenced Djamalzadeh's literary creativity

Full textThe thesis studies and highlights the central theme of temporality in Marsilio Ficino’s philosophy which is a thought crossed by the figures of time that are tradition, revelation and hope. The philosophy of Ficino, which is both a coherent and united thought, is not a system but it is rather the expression of a dynamic, specific to the Renaissance thought. In this study, the forms of the temporality and the unicity of the world are examined through the critical analysis of Marsilio Ficino's Commentary on the Republic of Plato which, unlike the political and ethical themes specific to the platonic dialogue, is expressly metaphysical and theological because the figures of temporality are conceived as so many metaphysical points of view from which are contemplated the world and the beings composing it. As this text did not benefit from a modern French translation, the thesis fills a gap in ficinian studies by proposing for the first time a French translation of the Argumenta in Rempublicam Platonis is proposed for the first time and, this French version, which is based on the critical establishment of the text, includes a notice, additional notes and the possibility of referring to the various sources on which this work is based. Finally, the thesis exposes a strictly ficinian definition of temporality as a spiritual and human reality by dealing with the question of the genesis and genealogy of temporal concepts and showing its cosmological implication

Full textThe art of creativity in literature is undeniable and certainly authors may express themselves in any number of ways in order to vehicle their thoughts or emotions. What about translation though? Indeed, the overall movement of creativity may be hidden or altered when translation is done by a third party. The focus of the present PhD thesis is on how self-translation supplies the creative ability of bilingual authors who translate their own novels. This work carries out an approach on translating problems revealed in Vassilis Alexakis' novel La langue maternelle (The mother tongue) which won the french literary award Prix Médicis in 1995. Our study achieves its purpose through meticulous analysis of field data, most precisely by exploring unpublished manuscripts, as well as greek and french versions published on a twelve-year framework. The present dissertation argues that Vassilis Alexakis' literary work is not a mere translation but a text (re)written from scratch after revising his own translation, thus his work is a constant creative and amazing process. Publications comparison reveals more than two thousand cases, classified into five specific categories so as to allow better analysis : morphosyntaxic, semantic, cultural, omissions and reproduction. Focus is also given to the level of personal implication, the relationship between identity and alterity and the diachronic dimension of hellenic elements via self-translation procedure.The research findings are various. Obviously, the literary work is not complete until he has revised and translated it, given that every translation implies a new version. We have noticed a felicitous use of language and author's tendency to transfer message more freely, as he knows intuitevely which rendering is more adequate and suitable. He often uses modulation strategy in order to translate source texts elements. Moreover, bilingual communication seems to be complementary and apparently his versions do not exist in isolation from one another. Indeed, even if they present apparent differences, their poetic function is too similar to be considered separate. It is also discussed if the use of alienating strategy enriches target culture and intralinguistic dialogue. The overall function of Aleaxakis' self-translation appears to play a double role ; on the one hand ensuring a dynamic and harmonius network between french and greek languages, whose reciprocal interferences warrant pure creativity and innovative literature and on the other hand, ensuring finding and inventing, and consequently learning and knowing acquisition, through the trip towards the other side

Full textThis thesis is constituted with the edition, the French translation and the historic, thematic and linguistic commentaries of qâdî d'Azemmour al-Sanhâjî‘s text, entitled Kanz al-asrâr wa lawâqih al-afkâr (Treasure of secrets and fertile ideas). It provides a discovery of this nearly completely unknown author in Arabic world as in orientalist spheres. He has nevertheless a distinguished personality, thanks to his wide culture, his ability to organise learnings and to the originality of his smart and high thought. It gives also the opportunity to extend the knowledge in the Middle-Age encyclopedia's field because it can be defined as an invisible world's encyclopedia. Finally, this research permits a better understanding of how traditional dates (prophetic traditions, narrations, and scientific information) are transmitted in Maghreb during this period. It also points the importance of other representative texts, as the Makkî's Tafsîr, which is barely studied

Full textAlexandre Vialatte’s (1901-1971) self-proclaimed label – ‘notoirement méconnu’ – continues to define him today. The writer-translator’s incongruities have relegated him to the margins of the French literary canon yet paradoxically attract a modest academic following. His first novel Battling le ténébreux ou la mue périlleuse (1928) – a little-studied and currently untranslated coming of age tale – exemplifies the rich placelessness that defines the author. This thesis contextualises Battling in light of Vialatte’s position as translator. It suggests the text is informed by an uneasy encounter between French and German cultures and geographies and, in parallel, it investigates the very notion of an identity ‘in translation’. This thesis adopts a translational approach whereby my own process translating Battling into English frames a literary study of the text. Given the multifaceted nature of translation, such an approach is interdisciplinary: it draws not only from translation studies (both theory and practice), but also from comparative literature, creative writing, and feminist studies, to map a polyphonous and multifaceted space between subjects and cultures. The analysis centres on the modernist hero’s ‘mue périlleuse’, or coming of age, and structures itself around two intersubjective encounters; as Vialatte’s protagonist meets his foreign and feminine Other to find insecurity, translator meets writer to problematise the original text. Full textLisa Bresner (1971-2007) was a multi-talented and prolific artist : novelist, translator, sinologist, children’s book author, short film director, and lecturer on Chinese civilization. Though her life was brief, she left behind a rich body of over thirty works – including novels, essays, translations, poetry, and children's books – that served as a cultural bridge between France and the Far East. This research explores three main aspects of how Lisa Bresner integrated Chinese and Japanese cultures into her literary creations. First, we examine her children’s literature, focusing on how she combined her imagination and love for Chinese ideograms to craft a poetic, transcultural universe that is both accessible and educational for young readers. Next, we explore her translations and works as a sinologist, highlighting how she made classical Chinese texts accessible to French readers while infusing them with her own creative touch. Finally, we delve into her novels, where she addresses themes of identity and otherness through characters that reflect her personal journey of self-discovery, shaped by encounters with different cultures. Our study seeks to answer a key question : How did Lisa Bresner, through her transcultural works, blend her personal experiences with Asian culture to explore the boundaries between self and other ? By drawing on her published works from 1992 to 2008, as well as her manuscripts and letters archived at IMEC, we aim to shed light on the unique way in which she contributed to bridging Eastern and Western cultures

Full textThis research aims to focus on Korean short stories written by young writers born in the 1980s. Despite being raised under a democracy and easier conditions than their seniors, the so-called “young generation” of writers displays a constant gloominess and uneasiness in their works. Through the examples of five short stories, loneliness and silence are analyzed under an interdisciplinary approach, making use of both literary and translation studies. While producing a fully commented translation, this thesis shows how the fact of being alone can be felt by young people in today’s Korean society, opposing a negative loneliness coming from the isolation from the group one wishes to be part of, and a positive solitude viewed as a oasis of calm in the middle of a roaring daily life often made stressful by the Confucian-hierarchy-inspired norms. We analyze how being alone can be seen both in a positive and negative way, and also as a voluntary or involuntary fact. Furthermore, the characters displayed in the short stories suffer from difficulties of speech and communication. Real and direct communication is hardly made possible, would it be a matter of “wrongly-said” from the first speaker, or “wrongly-understood” from the interlocutor. When this speech uneasiness turns into silence, the involuntary incapacity to speak from fear is added to the voluntary choice to hide from the risks of a distorted oral production. Thus, while expressing the suffering of one’s life, silent expression such as writing and literature appears to be the easiest choice

Full textIn our globalized contemporaneity, the speed of flows, exchanges and cultural transfers have increased. In this characteristic context of our modernity, there are figures dominating the landscape: the figures of travel and movement. They are incarnated in many identities and representations and meet some form of flexibility or emergency where the question of the frontier has taken a significant place. In this context, the question of the deterritorialisation of bodies, identities and imaginaries has become an important issue that alters and transforms the notions of constancy and stability in creation and scenic languages. Artistic and cultural transfers can consequently be perceived as the result of moving whose random nature would test the creation and its processes. In this way, the stage work should be considered as a place of convergence in which many visions of the world and the human are to be found. Then it would become essential to grasp the question of physical and symbolic move in a relational dynamic in which the narrowing of spaces and time would have meaning only in a consciousness of our belonging to the Tout-Monde, conceptualized by Édouard Glissant. To reflect on the forms and mutations of the representations and writings, inscribed in the "Mondialité", it would be to participate in the making sense of the complexification of the modalities and processes of scenic creation, by positing as a condition to these processes a thought of move and translation. This aesthetic and ethical thought would open the way to safeguarding the diversity of imaginaries necessary for all creation
Em nossa contemporaneidade globalizada, a velocidade dos fluxos, trocas e transferências culturais aumentou. Neste contexto, característico da nossa modernidade, há figuras que dominam a paisagem: as figuras do deslocamento. Elas são encarnadas em múltiplas identidades e representações e encontram-se diante de uma forma de flexibilidade ou urgência, onde a questão da fronteira ocupa um lugar predominante. Neste contexto, a questão da desterritorialização de corpos, identidades e imaginários tornou-se uma questão importante que altera e transforma as noções de constância e estabilidade na criação e nas lingagens cênicas. As transferências artísticas e culturais podem assim ser percebidas como resultado do deslocamento cuja natureza aleatória testaria a criação e seus processos. Daqui em diante, o trabalho do palco deve ser considerado como um lugar de convergência em que muitas visões do mundo e do ser humano estão encontradas. Seria então essencial compreender a questão do deslocamento físico e simbólico em uma dinâmica relacional em que o estreitamento dos espaços e do tempo teria significado apenas na consciência de nossa pertença ao Tout-Monde, conceituado por Édouard Glissant. Refletir sobre as formas e mutações das representações e escrituras inscritas na "Mondialité", seria participar na decriptagem da complexificação das modalidades e dos processos de criação cênica, propondo como condição para esses processos um pensamento de deslocamento e de tradução. Este pensamento, tanto estético como ético, abriria o caminho para preservar a diversidade dos imaginários necessários para qualquer criação

In questo contesto caratteristico della nostra modernità, ci sono figure che dominano il paesaggio: le figure dello spostamento. Sono incarnate in molte identità e rappresentazioni e si trovano di fronte a una forma di flessibilità o urgenza in cui la questione della frontiera ha preso un posto di rilievo. In questo contesto, la questione della deterritorializzazione dei corpi, delle identità e degli immaginari è diventata una questione importante che altera e trasforma le nozioni di costanza e stabilità nella creazione e nei linguaggi scenici. I trasferimenti artistici e culturali possono perciò essere percepiti come conseguenza dell' spostamento in cui la natura casuale avrebbe messo alla prova la creazione e suoi processi. D'ora in poi, il lavoro scenico dovrebbe essere considerato come un luogo di convergenza in cui si possono trovare molte visioni del mondo e del essere umano. In questo, sarebbe diventato essenziale de capire la questione del spostamento fisico e simbolico in una dinamica relazionale in cui il restringimento dello spazio e del tempo avrebbe senso solo nella coscienza di appartenenza nel Tout-Monde, concettualizzato da Édouard Glissant. Riflettere sopra le forme e trasformazioni delle rappresentazione e scritture incisi nella "Mondialité" sarebbe quindi partecipare della decrittazione della complessità dei termini e processi delle creazione sceniche, posizionando come condizione per questi processi un pensiero di spostamento e traduzione. Full textOur research intends at understanding how a method as “the action method for integrating home assistance and nursing care services in the scope of autonomy“ (MAIA) is put into action and how it can change the point of view of the professionals involved. To identify the leverages and the obstacles influencing the development of the MAIA, possibly its sustainability. With this aim, we decide to adopt an in-depth case study analysis of “Alpha”; a MAIA taken as a representative example of “canonical” MAIA. The choice of case study methodology goes well with the explorative character of the study. Particularly, we mobilized a qualitative methodology with a content analysis. The results’ analysis reveals, on one side, the challenges of recognition and legitimacy of the MAIA vis a vis the involved parties and the problems related to the absence of sensemaking of the collective action. On the other side, we highlighted the work of the actors inside “Alpha” and the good functioning of the latter. These results were completed with an analysis of micro-situations. Our results lead us to the literature of three main axes: the coordination, legitimacy and sensemaking. Finally, we revert back to the foundations of two theories mobilized as a theoretical framework: the theory of economies of worth and the theory of the actor network or sociology of translation

Full textAt the end of the Ming Dynasty, Baoweng laoren has selected forty tales of the three collections of Feng Menglong and two collections of Ling Mengchu to compile another anthology entitled Jingu qiguan 今古奇觀 (curious spectacles of today and of the past). This anthology was a huge success at the time of its publication, and is constantly reprinted for centuries until today. Today it is considered as a main representative work of Chinese literature in vernacular language. The reputation of Jingu qiguan has already exceeded the Chinese border since a long time. Since the 18th century, three tales of the Jingu qiguan were translated for the first time in Europe by a French Jesuit. Therefore, throughout the centuries, the Jingu qiguan has experienced a lot of partial translations, retranslations and adaptation across Europe. Only in French, there are about thirty translations, retranslations and rewrite of Jingu qiguan. So that leads us to wonder why these stories have constantly been translated and retranslated, or even rewritten. Who have translated them and how they have been translated? How these translations did had some influence in the local literature? This study is intended to cover all these issues

Full textGiorgio Caproni (1912-1990) is now recognized as one of the greatest Italian poets of his time. As a parallel to his poetic work, he also devoted himself, as did a number of his contemporaries, to the translation of some of the most important figures of twentieth century French literature: Proust, Céline, Apollinaire, Char, to name but a few. Following some of the analyses of the philosopher Giorgio Agamben, we see how, with the aid of authors from another genre (prose) and language (French), Caproni’s practice of translation, at the crossroads of a literary and translatological reasoning, constitutes a laboratory for experimenting with his poetry to come. It is through the translation of such authors as the above (particularly during the nineteen sixties) that Caproni’s translational poetics is elaborated, characterized by the deconstruction of syntactic links. Punctuation, used as a rhythmic and melodic instrument, furrows the text and gives rise to a play of enunciation that one subsequently finds in his poetry. Indeed, the collection Congedo del viaggiatore cerimonioso (1965) marks the appearance of a character and the beginning of a new phase of his work. The series of characters who populate the second part of Giorgio Caproni’s work testifies to a strategy, formed through his translations, of the theatricalization of the poetic space. But this theatrical simulation is only one of the modes used by the poet to express his loss of confidence in the power of the word to represent reality. This assessment opens out onto the themes of the dissolution of the subject and the absence of God: themes which are to be understood not so much from the point of view of philosophy as from that of the musical language towards which this poetry strives and which founds its modernity

Full textAlthough machine translation has traditionally been perceived in the literary domain as a sort of avant-garde technology on a par with Oulipian techniques, the recent arrival of neural translation tools seems to have given rise to an entirely new and deeply polarized debate. In order to take a critical and objective look on the matter, we therefore attempt to build a system specifically trained on literature. While our results show that it is indeed possible to train such a system for this particular domain, despite the still evident limitations of these models, our experience on prose fiction also demonstrates that they can be tailored to the individual style of a translator. Our conclusions obviously raise newfound questions regarding the ergonomic aspects of translation technology, the ethical concerns that it raises or the societal issues that have to be addressed. But, more importantly, they indicate that it is possible to reimagine such tools and rethink their use in a way that better serves the human-machine interaction, the creative process and the quality of translated texts

Full textThough mediation and cultural mediation seem to be enrooted in Translation Studies especially since the Cultural Turn, a specialized definition of these notions is still missing. Based on their definitions in other different domains – especially cultural communication – and on a causal theory of translation, we present a three-fold thesis on the translator as a cultural mediator and on his deliberate interventions. The three axes we develop here are based on identity, textual and functionalist approaches. First, we analyze the specificity of the identity of the translator seen as a construction that is not only marked by the linguistic formation and the sociocultural norms of his original community, but also by the actor’s empathy towards the Other and his system of norms. In this first fold, translation strategies are studied as mirrors of identity strategies the translator follows in order to keep the coherence and the valorization of his identity construction. Then, the texts and types of texts are considered as cultural creations that the translator re-presents to his community through making cultural differences understandable on the formal, lexical and discourse levels. To do so, he uses different writing norms from the most conforming to the most differentiating one. In this second fold, the translator’s preface is seen as a privileged place for a direct mediation, in which he already informs his reader about the translation he’s about to read and recommends the reading. Finally, we study two translation functions through which the translator acts on the cultural identity of his community based on his re-presentation of the text: the intellectual formation of the reader and the de-construction/ re-construction of his identity. By the means of a simple text or of an educational institution, the translator’s first aim is to inform the reader, and through this information, he acts on the re-definition of essential foundations of his identity construction
