Full textIn the context of the multiplicity of formal systems, it has become a growing need to express formal proofs into a common logical framework. This thesis focuses on the use of higher-order term rewriting to embed complex formal systems in the simple and well-studied lambda-Pi calculus modulo. This system, commonly used as a logical framework, features dependent types and is extended with higher-order term rewriting. We study, in a first part, criterias for the confluence properties of higher-order rewrite systems considered together with the usual beta reduction. In the case of left-linear systems, confluence can be reduced to the study of critical pairs which must be provided a decreasing diagram with relation to some rule labeling. We show that in the presence of non-linear rules, it is still possible to achieve confluence if the set of considered terms is layered. We then focus, in a second part, on the encoding of higher-order logics based on complex universe structures. The embeding of cumulativity, a limited form of subtyping, is handled with new rewriting techniques relying on private symbols and allowing some form of proof irrelevance. We then describe how algebraic universe expressions containing level variables can be represented, even in presence of universe constraints.Eventually we introduce an embeding of universe polymorphism as defined in the core logic of the Coq system and prove the correctness of the defined translation mechanism. These results, along with other more practical techniques, allowed the implementation of a translator to Dedukti which was used to translate several sizeable Coq developments

Full textThis dissertation seeks to explore the nature of two aspects of translation problems, i. E. "articulation" and "inference", in Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway (1925) and its translations in French (M-C. Pasquier, 1994, P. Michon, 1993, S. David, 1929) and Italian (N. Fusini, 1994, A. Scalero, 1979). Two types of articulation are studied : the syntactic articulation (logical connectors such as And, For, Well, justement, And so, But then, Et alors) and the conceptual articulation (metaphor and comparison). The investigation bears particularly on the interaction between these explicit items and the potential inferences they produce, as a way of characterising both the original text and the translated text. That is why the translation analysis is led bi-directionally, from the original to the translated text, and from the translated text to the original. Other aspects, such as contextual and pragmatic effects are also analysed both in the novel and in everyday language. Some hypotheses about the presence of hierarchies and systematic strategies adopted by the translators are also formulated and discussed, as well as the possibility of exploiting existing translations for better future translations

Full textThis thesis deals with logical translation and solving of problem using solvers. In particular, we are interested in solving planning problems in Artificial Intelligence. We present the automatic translator TouIST that we developed and that allows us to use a simple language to generate logical formulas from a problem description. Our tool allows us to model many static or dynamic combinatorial problems as Sudoku, Takuzu or Nim game, and to benefit from the regular improvements to SAT, QBF or SMT solvers to solve them efficiently. We then present reference encodings to solve classical planning problems with SAT and QBF, or temporal planning problems with SMT. In each case, we introduce new encodings in plan-spaces based on open condition modeling to represent causal links. Finally, we show, thanks to an experimental study, that our encodings are more efficient than the existing ones on the reference problems of international planning competitions (IPC)

Full textThis thesis on the sophistical refutations of Aristotle is divided into three main sections: an introduction, a translation and a commentary. The introduction subdivides itself in two parts; in the first part we relate the semantic evolution of the term elenchus ("refutation"). This evolution is altogether remarkable as this word originally signifies "shame". We attempt to demonstrate that Aristotle’s' definition of elenchus is a radical break from the traditional conception that had prevailed from homer to Plato inclusively. Aristotle’s' definition, which is purely logical, is in fact opposed to an ethical conception of elenchus. Next we submit an overall view of the sophistical refutations and examine in detail the main interpretative problems that arise in this text. Our translation of the sophistical refutations differs in several places from the two other French translations of this essay, both the one by J. Barthelemy Saint-Hilaire (1843) and the one by J. Tricot (1939). The commentary is composed of 472 notes attempting to confer a maximum of clarity to this often difficult text by Aristotle. It fills a blatant void, since the last overall study of the sophistical refutations goes back to 1866
Arzoglou, Jordan. "Langue contre code." Paris 8, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PA082872.
Full textTwo attitudes seem to be possible towards the world : "lato sensu" vision, which may overlook the principle of non-contradiction, and "strito sensu" vision, which is subject to that principle. "Lato sensu" vision corresponds to poetical sensivity and allows deictic knowledge. By definition, language is the means used by poetry. "Stricto sensu" vision leads to a codification of thought. A code has no deictic value, unless such value is conferred to by speech act. Sense is awareness of this dual perception, which consists of "lato sensu" vision and "stricto sensu" vision. Formal logic and Chomskian theory are par excellence examples of "stricto sensu" vision. These disciplines therefore do not allow for a dual perception, whose lack leads to nonsense. This becomes evident in translation, whose purpose is in fact the transmission of sense. In short, sense may be transmitted only through uncodified language
