Full textChinese contemporary literature, while almost unknown thirty or more years ago in France, begins to occupy a place we can non longer ignore. In the present work, after presenting a panorama of the translation and the reception of this literature in France (1981-2012), we will try to explore in detail some technical aspects of its translation : strategies used by the translators and the efforts they make when facing translation problems. Being a descriptive and analytical research, it will deal with six translation objects : “spelling and image of Chinese characters’’, “wordplay’’, “proverbs’’, “xiehouyu’’, “onomatopoeia’’ and “sub free direct discourse’’, taking into account thirty four translations of seven Chinese contemporary writers : Mo Yan 莫言, Su Tong 苏童, Yu Hua 余华, Bi Feiyu 毕飞宇, Chi Li 池莉, A Cheng 阿城 and Jia Pingwa 贾平凹. The analysis of different strategies will be done in an dialectic approach which aims to overcome theoretical dichotomies opposing radically the author and the reader. While studying convergences, diversities and complexities of methods, we will try to shed light on factors that influence or govern the choices of the translator, in a targeted manner, according to each of the six studied objects. Far from establishing a list of unsuitable choices, losses and translation mistakes or issuing instructions, we wish to draw attention to the real constraints or difficulties that translators of the Chinese language come across during their work, and offer opportunity for thought

Full textGuan Moye, better known by his pen name Mo Yan, was born in Gaomi County in Shandong province in 1955. The pen name "Mo Yan" means "don't speak" in Chinese. Mo Yan is one of the most famous Chinese contemporary writers in France, and his works have been widely translated into French. His childhood in Gaomi County inspired his first conception of literature and is, to some extent, the portal through which we enter his realm of letters. The unique style of his works attracts many academic and media criticism, and even more after winning the Noble Prize of literature in 2012. This dissertation intends to study the translation, publication, criticism and reception of Mo Yan’s works in France. Besides a literary study, the dissertation also focuses on the imaginary of China. The research is monographic and comparative, based on his several best-known works: Red Sorghum (1986), The Republic of Wine (1993), Big Breasts and Wide Hips (1995), Sandalwood Death (2001), Pow! (2003), Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out (2006), Frog (2009)…

Full textWang Anyi is a prominent figure in contemporary Chinese literature, and this thesis focuses on the translation and reception of her works from 1981 to 2020 in the French-speaking world. Although most of Wang Anyi’s works have been translated into French, the author remains largely unknown among French readers, creating a paradoxical situation many contemporary Chinese writers face. Our research is divided into three parts: translation activities, the approach of French translators, and the reception of Wang Anyi’s works in France. We aim to understand the factors that influence contemporary Chinese writers when travelling abroad and explore the formation and distortion of Wang Anyi’s literary images through her works translated into French; this will be done by examining her Shanghainese identity, her feminism, and her realism as seen through the French perspective

Full textThis study aims to explore the translation and reception of modern Chinese literature in France. By placing the act of translation in the field of literary and cultural exchanges between France and China, this study tries to reflect on the role of the translation, and the way it works in the international exchanges between different nation’s literature, specifically in the Franco-Chinese literary exchanges. By means of focusing of translated modern Chinese literary works in France and conducting a phase-to-phase study on them, this thesis attempts to establish an overview of the translation and reception of modern Chinese literature in France within the theoretical framework of socio-criticism by Annie Brisset and the sociology by Pierre Bourdieu. The thoughts on three representative Chinese writers ― Lu Xun, Ba Jin and Lao She ― help to better understand the mechanism that operates in the translation and reception of modern Chinese literature in France unveil the influencing factors, and reveal the role of the translator, the editor and other mediators in the translation and reception of the literature in question in her host country

Full textThe aim of this research work is to study the translation problems raised by linguistic and sociocultural aspects through four French literary pieces belonging to different genres: drama (Huis Clos by Jean-Paul Sartre, and Les Justes by Albert Camus) and novel (La Porte Etroite by André Gide and La Vie Tranquille by Marguerite Duras). This study is based on the practical case of French to Armenian translation. The thesis is in three parts. The first one deals with general points concerning the target language (Armenian). The same part also contains the main points of various translation theories and, above all, the rich history of Armenian civilisation translations from the creation of the Armenian civilisation to the present day. In the two following parts, the study focuses on sociocultural problems (the role of various elements on the translation) and linguistic ones (the pecularity of translating possessive phrases, relative pronouns, relative clauses, comparisons, idiomatic phrases, gallicisms…)

Full textThe translation and reception of French monographs of comparative literature in China has been going on for a hundred years, it is an important part of the study on the translation of Western literary theories. This thesis mainly sorts out and describes the history, status quo and characteristics of the translation and reception of French monographs of comparative literature in China, trying to find out how the philosophy, core concepts and research methods of French comparative literature fit into the Chinese context, how they participate in the discipline construction of Comparative Literature in China, how they contact and merge with pluralistic Chinese literary creations, and how they are enriched and perfected in a brand new literary field. The thesis consists of two parts, including six chapters, the introduction and the conclusion. The introduction part emphasizes that the current research lacks a comprehensive review and theoretical reflections on the translation process of French comparative literature monographs. In view of this, this thesis attempts to describe the basic trajectory, development and characteristics of the translation of French comparative literature monographs in China, highlight the initiative and creativity of Chinese scholars in the process of translation and reception, show the dual value of theoretical travel to the recipients and the theory itself. The first part of the thesis consists of Chapter One, Chapter Two and Chapter Three, which correspond respectively to the first, second and third phase of the history of translation. Based on Edward Said’s “theoretical travel” and Anthony Pym’s method to construct the history of translation, the first part shows the context faced by the translation of French comparative literature monographs in different periods. The second part is composed of Chapter Four, Chapter Five and Chapter Six. Chapter Four focuses on the overall understanding and acceptance of French comparative literature in China, discusses the connotation of the term “French School”, the image and role of French comparative literature scholars, shows Chinese scholars’ identification for the main values of French comparative literature and the interpretation of the core concepts. To conclude, this thesis helps to reveal the important role of translation activities in the development, construction and reinterpretation of national literature, and shows the multiple appearances and possibilities of the same theory in the different cultural spaces and historical contexts. Among them, the translation and publication of related research by Chinesecomparative literature scholars in the French context constitutes the true dialogue and mutual learning. This thesis provides a reference for the mutual translation and learning of Chinese and French literature in the future

Full textContemporary Chinese theater has a close connection with Western theater. For one century, Chinese theater, and especially spoken theater, has analyzed and appropriated Western cultures by filtering and summing up characteristics according to its own interests and presuppositions. This appropriation is accompanied by a series of theatrical operations. In this perspective, we have presented in detail, analyzing specific and varied cases, the reception of French theater in China of the last forty years in two stages: from 1978 to 1992 and from 1993 to 2014. We have emphasized the historical characteristics of each period, which clearly influence the general environment of Chinese theater and its relation to Western theater, by highlighting the influence and the major role played by French theater in the landscape of modern Chinese culture and especially his theatrical creations. The rich exchanges with Frenchtheater allow the Chinese theater to dialogue, to question, to evolve and to rebuild its ownidentity

Full textAt the dawn of the twentieth century, turning point in the intellectual and literary history to the Middle Kingdom, Lu Xun (1881-1936) is clearly the iconic Chinese writer: he is the modern author most translated outside borders, and particularly in France. Therefore it seems interesting to study, through a historical and translatological review, the almost century-old course of the work of this author in France. First, the textual and contextual research allows to open a new access road to his work and to shed a new light on the question of translation of his work. In a second step, it is to establish the panorama of French translations from 1926 to the present. Since then and still today, translations appear with the joint efforts of Chinese and French translators and, in various media publications and in a rhythm different. The reasons that these ferrymen of languages and cultures are interested in the work of Lu Xun differ greatly, mainly because of the politicization then the call for the depoliticization of the writer. Indeed, we will see that the "translators-introducers", the official interpreters, the supporters of political ideology and those who stick are far from aim the same translation purposes. Moreover, their translation projects differ from one another due to the evolution of translative thought and literary exchanges during near a century. Finally, the different trends will be highlighted through the comparative analysis of translations that update the issues and challenges of the style of Lu Xun. We ask, in this regard, to what extent and by what strategy the dynamism of textuality can be transmitted in the target text

Full textSpanish-American fiction has been developing unprecedented from the 1960’s, what has been given the highly contested name of boom by international literary critics. The main problem of that term is that it refers to a phenomenon affecting both the production and distribution of Spanish-American literature. Our work is a reading of the phenomenon through the study of translation and reception of Julio Cortázar, Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa in France and in the Netherlands between 1960 and 1973.In tracing the history of the early translations and analysis of the editorial context in which they arrived, we show the existence of profound differences between the two countries in the translation of the four authors, which do not illustrate their theoretical position in the world space of translation, and the important role played by certain cultural intermediaries. Through a study of translation and reception, we also highlight the mediating role played by translators and literary criticism between the original texts and the final reader in the two reference countries

Full textThis thesis focuses on the cultural exchanges between France and Italy in the fields of literary translation and publishing at the beginning of the 21st century. Its main goal is to study the various stages that precede, accompany and follow the publication of a work of French literature in Italy. Having placed our subject in the context of the main historical relations between the two countries in the field of literature, our analysis concentrates on three key moments: the choice of book, its translation and finally, its publication and reception. At the centre of our analysis is the knowledge that the tastes, canons, literary traditions and cultures of the two countries undoubtedly affect the reception of a work and the expectations of readers and critics. We will therefore take into consideration the role of editorial strategies throughout this process from the purchase of the copyright to paratextual decisions, i.e. the methods used to arouse readers’ interest or supply information. We will also examine the figure of the translator, the “driving force” in the text’s transition, as it is often their choice of language and style that provides the key to our understanding of it.Given that the publication and fortune of a literary work in a foreign country are the result of a complex process and a stratified accumulation of exchanges, stereotypes and multiple operations, our research has adopted analytical methods from a wide range of fields and applied them to a selection of novels published in Italy over the last ten years
