Full textThe research aims to investigate the relevance of the practice and videosurveillance equipment in contemporary audiovisual narratives, focusing attention on issues and conceptual issues that characterize the recent phase of the scientific debate, which has intensified and acquired even more importance starting from the September 11, 2001. The research work, of multidisciplinare vocation, starting from the rereading of the panoptic project proposed by Michel Foucault, outlines the mutual interrelations between the scientific debate promoted by the Surveillance Studies Center, the Visual Culture, and the always more widespread and pervasive media system. Although references and analysis are inserted in documentary texts or visual practices, the corpus includes mostly forms of fictional narration, composed of both films and television series. The study began examining cases considered 'symptomatic' for scientific literature on the topic such as Minority Report (Steven Spielberg, 2002) or Panic Room (David Fincher, 2002). The observed productions were analyzed with the intent to energize orders of spatial scale and sensitive configurations such as the way to make bodies appear, subjected to an increasingly invasive traceability, with the intent to identify structural axes of a possible systemic organization of audiovisual productions.

Any attempt to go deeply into the translation from Arabic in Spain must necessarily pass through the study of Spanish Arabism, as this is one of the most accredited voices of Arab culture in our country. In fact, most of the ideas circulating in Spain about the Arab world and about our own national history have reached us through the Spanish Arabism, the highest authority in all matters related to the Arab-Islamic culture. However, the Spanish Arabism, despite its corporatism, has not still been studied from a critical perspective which tries to analyze the discourse (or discourses) that it has articulated on Arab culture in general, and on al-Andalus (the Medieval Muslim Spain), in particular. The translation is, in this sense, a privileged instrument of analysis. Similarly, we believe that the translation from Arabic in Spain is a field of study in itself, and that the texts translated by the Spanish Arabists form a polysystem within Spanish literature. Find out what image has come to us from Arab culture in general, and particularly from Andalusian, through translations carried out by Spanish Arabists, is the main purpose of this thesis. To give an answer to this question, we analyzed a corpus of Andalusian historiographic works translated and commented by seven prestigious Spanish Arabists. For this analysis we based ourselves on the notion of paratext given by Gérard Genette (1987), on the definitions of text, context and pretext of Widdowson (2004 and 2007) and on the model of semiotic construction of identity and otherness of Carbonell (2003 and 2004) .

Full textThe opening of One Hundred Years of Solitude is abundant in metaphors: river stones transfigured into prehistoric eggs, Melquiades’ sparrow hands, the gypsy tent planted on the outskirts of the village. However, metaphors not only exist in literature: they have made language their home and it subsists on them. The common, everyday language is brimming with metaphors: stones, knives, and bullets are avoided, and so are insidious questions; one defends that which gives shelter, for example, a strategic square or a point of view. Of course, some metaphors have nested so deep into the language that they are barely noticed. Probably a native Spanish speaker takes it literally when a tent is planted in a place, because tents, camps, and bunks really are planted. Before a new reality, the human being metaphorize. The novelty is covered with a varnish of familiarity that dissipates the disturbing vision of the unusual. In this sense, the metaphor is a universal epistemological strategy. However, though every human being is a metaphorizer, each culture favors some cognitive domains, to the detriment of other cognitive domains that may be preferred by a different culture. They integrate a conceptual system of language, from which they derive their metaphors, such selected cognitive domains. Among culturally and linguistically distant languages such as Spanish and Mandarin, conceptual differences seem evident and worthy of study. For teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language to Chinese speaking students, knowing the conceptual differences and similarities between the language that he teaches and the native language of his students may turn out useful.

The translation of dialects and linguistic varieties is a branch of translation studies which has been briefly tackled by several authors. To date, a clear and definitive solution on how the translator should (or could) deal with this type of texts has not been found yet. This project does not claim to solve this problem, but aims to shed light on Spanish translators' past and current tradition in the translation of Italian novels in the period that goes from the second half of the XIX century to the XX and XXI centuries. We intend to defend the hypothesis of the possible application of Spanish dialects to the translation of Italian geographical-linguistic varieties. Concretely, we pursue two goals in this project. The first is a descriptive goal: the analysis of the translation of dialect varieties within a corpus of Italian novels and the corresponding Spanish translations, whose originals versions date back to the second half of the XIX century, to the XX and XXI centuries. Far from the implementation of a quantum-empirical methodology, we intend to prove if, as we do believe, the standardization of linguistic varieties is the most considered option within the Spanish translation tradition, and, besides, to proceed with a detailed analysis of those cases where an alternative option was proposed. The second goal concerns the elaboration of a translation proposal: we aim to propose a way to translate the Italian dialects into Spanish. Concretely, we aim to elaborate a translation model which includes the Spanish linguistic varieties, in the light of a socio-cultural perspective and not necessarily of a geographic correspondence. The elaboration of such a proposal requires specific material and a deep knowledge of the graphic representation of Spanish dialects within the Spanish linguistic and literary polysystem.

1995-2015. La Traducción como mediación cultural en los procesos de transmisión y recepción de las obras de arte” dealt with the critical theories and contemporary artistic practices that use the concept of “visual translation” in the process of transmission and reception of contemporary art. The theories analysed bring Art History, Political Philosophy, Visual Studies, and Translation Studies together to shape a new methodology. The reasons for the growth of translation as an artistic interest depend on many complex contemporary phenomena, such as the globalization and the internationalization of the art market, which has expanded the possibilities of displacement of the artist’s works (Biennales, international shows, etc.). The globalization of art has eliminated the territorial boundaries that previously characterized the cultural and aesthetic maps, and has blurred the margins of artistic creation, especially when it is based on the use of technology and the interconnection between languages and cultures. The general concern regarding the material disappearance of the work in favour of its conceptual elements involves a reflection on international political dynamics and their effects on local and national artistic identity. Indeed, the movement of artists in an interconnected world produces in many cases the modification of the structural essence of artistic work in order to offer an easy interpretation of cultural and linguistic messages. In this context, translation has become a necessity. Nevertheless, translation and visual art interactions are historically intertwined.

Full textThe present study aims to analyze the translation process of the book Queen of Air and Darkness (2019) of the Shadowhunters saga from English to Spanish by Hispanic fans. The fan translators considered that the previous official translations by Editorial Planeta did not fulfill their expectations. Therefore, they decided to use Facebook to start an online community translation process focused on producing a text in a short time, without compromising its quality. This qualitative study will allow us, through data production techniques such as interviews and document analysis, to learn more about the stages of the translation process of the fan translators team Shadowhunters contra la Ley. Also, it will help us to understand the internal relationship of the team and the relationship between the team and the fandom during the translation of the fantasy novel Queen of Air and Darkness.
