Full textThis research consists in a study of the textual tradition of Aelius Aristides’ Sacred Tales (= ST). The first chapter presents a detailed description of the extant manuscripts (all collated entirely), sometimes re-dated on the basis of palaeographical evidence; the second shows the existence of an archetype for the transmission of the Aristidean oeuvre; the third, fourth and fifth aim to build stemmata codicum for the traditions of ST 1-2 (bipartite), 3-5 (monopartite) and 6 (monopartite), respectively; the sixth – and last – chapter reconstructs the circulation of the ST from the age of Arethas of Caesarea to the late XV century. To complete and support the research, numerous plates of the examined manuscripts are offered along with an index of the collated codices.

Full textThe thesis analyses the complete printed history of the Apocolocyntosis from the editio princeps (1513) to F. E. Ruhkopf’s edition of 1808, where the main testimonia of the satire are discovered: the aim is to study the evolution of the text and the editors’ approaches before the unearthing of the manuscript tradition, which radically changed scholarly method. The work is divided into two main sections: the first section considers each edition in chronological order, analyzing the historical and literary context in which they were born, together with the personality who created them, and singling out interesting contributions to textual criticism and interpretation; the second section is a repository of all textual variations which occurred throughout the editorial history of the satire – lessons deriving from no longer existing codices as well as conjectures of the editors –, which are put in relation with the extant manuscripts’ readings as they are known today and modern scholarly debate regarding each locus. Even though some general tendencies can be recognized, the strong individualistic component of pre-modern editions does not allow clearly outlining a coherent evolutionary trend, or unambiguously ascribing methodologies to specific timeframes. Each edition is in fact a unique product, which presents a rich, intricate and previously unexplored amount of knowledge regarding the Apocolocyntosis. These complex editorial products are revealed as valuable sources, interesting for the history of classical scholarship, but also useful towards the establishment of Seneca’s still very controversial text. Finally the study outlines new possibilities of exploiting the vast corpus offered by pre-modern editions through the use of digital tools.

Full textThe recent papyrological discoveries have considerably enriched our knowledge of Aeolic lyric. In particular, they have reopened the debate about the relations between the Aeolic poets and epic poetry. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a study of the epic material which can be found in the fragments of Sappho and Alcaeus, in order to identify the epic poetry circulating on the isle of Lesbos at the turn of the 7th and 6th centuries. Taking into account the related methodological issues, this research confirms, on the one hand, some conclusions already expressed by other scholars; on the other hand, it opens up new perspectives. In particular, whilst it is substantially confirmed that Sappho and Alcaeus knew the Iliad, the so-called Brothers Poem by Sappho, published in 2014, presents many elements which strenghten the hypotesis of the two poets knowing the Odissey – which was previously impossible to verify. As a further result, it is once more proved that a large amount of lost epic poetry was available to Sappho and Alcaeus.

Full textThis thesis has two distinct but related purposes. First of all, it aims at testing the greater or lesser willingness of Byzantine readers to dialogue with the fascinating but controversial Origen's legacy. In this perspective, we will investigate a curious reference, contained in the acts of the Second Council of Nicaea (787), to the presumed acts of an apostolic synod held in Antioch and kept in Origen's library (chapter 1). We will then focus on the study of Photius' appreciation of the figure and work of Origen. The evaluation of his theological thought will be joined with the material transmission of Origen's works. Indeed, ms. Marc.gr. 47of the Philocalia will be particularly relevant in this research (chapter 2). Secondly, this thesis will deal with the reception and the medieval transmission of a work by Origen, the Commentary on Matthew. The edition of books 12 and 13 will therefore be 560 provided, departing from the ecdotic criteria adopted by Klostermann in his 1935 edition. For this work, a Greek text is available (books 10-17 on 25), partially overlapping with an anonymous Latin translation (5th-6th century). Our aim is to demonstrate that our Greek manuscripts do not transmit the text as licensed by the author. On the contrary, they attest a later compilation, in which the Commentary on Matthew has been heavily abbreviated. We will come to this conclusion through the systematic comparison between the Greek text and the Latin translation, which often appears wider (chapter 4), and with the exegetical chains dedicated to the Synoptic Gospels which, where they draw from Origen's Commentary, offer passages unknown to the direct tradition (chapter 3). The same conclusions will then be drawn from the study of other branches of the tradition, among which the fragments of Crypt. Γ. β. VI stand out. They are in fact a witness of the unabridged version of the Commentary on Matthew (chapters 5 and 6). In its 1935 edition, Klostermann had inserted in the Greek text conjectures and additions derived from the systematic comparison with the Latin translation. Here we offer instead an edition of the Greek abridged version, purified from the interventions of the German scholar. The Greek text will be accompanied by a strictly literal Italian translation and will be followed by a series of notes to justify the most delicate ecdotic choices. The edition will also be based on a new codicological and palaeographic study of the Greek manuscripts of the Commentary on Matthew (Cantabr.Trin.Coll. B. 8. 10; Monac.gr. 191; Marc.gr. 43, Vat.gr. 597; Par.gr. 455; Matr.gr. 4725; Barb.gr. 575; Barb.gr. 556). Finally, an updated stemmatic arrangement of the manuscript tradition will be offered (chapter 7).

Full textDuring the nineteenth century in France, the education through classical studies of the elite meant to play the highest professional roles became increasingly anachronistic and the school system was the main target of many debates and reforming processes. These attempts of changing teaching methods and subjects increased even further after the battle of Sedan. At the end of the century, the persistence of a stationary culture and of an educational system linked to the humanistic tradition clashed with the democratisation of the society, the scientific progress and the economic development and also with the rush to modernise this culture. The aim of this research is to trace the main cultural, historical and economic factors that distinguished the history of French education, while analysing the long and various changes of classical humanities during the establishment of French secondary school, which was the more conservative institution of the nineteenth century.

Morantin, Patrick <1962>.
Full textNotes affixed by Vettor Fausto and Guillaume Budé on their personal copy of Homer's editio princeps constitute two remarkable examples of the reading of the poet in the first decades of the XVIth century. The edition, the analysis, the interpretation of this set of notes, stemming largely from two exceptional sources, the famous Venetus A and an unknown rivalling source, are the foundation and the material of this thesis. From the examination of a thousand notes, the study attempts to understand the philological approach of both humanists. Considering that a certain philosophy of history, marked by the idea of progress and historicism, biases our understanding of the philological work of the humanists, the research reverses the historical perspective by taking, for point of comparison, the approach of the antique philology, in particular that of the scholars of the Hellenistic era : the Alexandrine empeiria. The thesis concludes that the underlying interpretative model to the criticism of the humanist philology is a matter for a paradigm which it is advisable to question in order to better understand the reading of an author such as Homer in the Renaissance.

Full textThis research deals with the Ionian Islands as 'historiographical object', starting from the idea itself of the Ionian Islands as archipelago, which is a modern geographical concept. We examine the different modern historiographical identities assigned to these islands during the last two centuries and how they influenced the historical interpretation. At the beginning of the XIXth century. travellers and scholars considered them first of all as 'the realm of Odysseus' and the first archaeological explorations, but also many later scientific campaigns, had Homer as a starting point. Instead, these islands played little role in the Histories of Greece, except for the case of the Corcyrean sedition described by Thucydides, which the French Revolution brought at the centre of the political debate. In the second half of the XXth century, within a general shift of attention to the peripheries of Greece, the Ionian Islands regained an important role, as connective point in the trading routes towards the Adriatic Sea and Italy. We will give particular attention to the role of the islands in the debate on the Euboian colonisation and to the most recent perspectives, where the Ionian Islands are finally considered as an active historical subject.

Full textThe aim of the present work is to evaluate the impact of the ancient classics on the American Founding Fathers, with a particular focus on Thomas Jefferson. The first section gives a wide portrait of the academic context in which the Founders were educated, comprising not only of Oxford, Cambridge, and the Scottish universities, but also the colonial colleges. The evaluation of the educational practices in use at the time makes it possible to understand better the classical impact on revolutionary Americans. In particular, this analysis studies in depth Jefferson's education. Of the many possible perspectives and approaches to this topic, the present work focuses on the way ancient classics were taught to him, his Commonplace Book, which reports part of the ancient classics he read during his youth, and his correspondence. The latter has been studied especially to understand which other ancient writers he read, valued, and esteemed in his adulthood and old age. As book collector, Jefferson bought an incredible number of ancient classics, as attested by a few manuscripts of his book lists. Despite the dearth of sure evidence, it is very likely that he read the ancient works largely during his retirement. He loved reading them in the original, though he made great use of translations. The second part of this work is dedicated to investigating how Jefferson's classical education contributed to the building of his personality and ideas, as well as how he elaborated specific classical themes in his own life. The study is thus focused on Jefferson's personal human experience, specifically on his reflection on human mortality and the afterlife. These themes, indeed, are strictly linked to his reception of Epicurean and Stoic tenets, the two ancient philosophical systems which had the greatest and most profound impact on Jefferson's personality and thought.

Full textSaturo (Leporano, Italy) is a site about 12 km south-east of Taranto, situated on a promontory overlooking Porto Perone and Porto Saturo, two small inlets on the Gulf of Taranto, on the Ionic sea. Excavations carried out in the XXth century have shown an impressive continuity of occupation, with archaeological remains of Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements, of two Greek sanctuaries and of a very large Roman Villa. From 2007 Sapienza – University of Rome has restarted fieldwork in the Greek sanctuary so called “Santuario della Sorgente” (2007-2010). Full textIn an attempt to assign an identity to the statue of a female deity armed the crowning acroterion of the Roman sanctuary of Fortuna and Mater Matuta in the building phase relevant to the activity of Tarquinius Superbus, the author identifies the compositional scheme of the entire group acroterial as presentation of the Corinthian myth of Ino and Melicertes, which is accompanied by the self-representation of the last ruler of Rome and the female deity of his personal power and protect the entire dynasty of Tarquini, family of Corinthian origin. It is therefore revisited the sources archaeological and literary about the nature of some Greek goddesses of Hesiod and the Homeric tradition in which we can recognize archaic features due to contamination with the Phoenician goddess Astarte, and this interaction is particularly profound for the figures of Astarte and Aphrodite in Corinth that only in the classical age of war and lose the attributes courotrophici to be allocated to different skills, but that in the proof of the Archaic period is a deity who plays a military role to protect the city and the dynasties that they oversee. Aspects eastern recognized to the cult of Aphrodite Fortuna-Roman might, therefore, result from a mediation due to the Greek religious culture rather than a direct contribution of Phoenician merchants in the area of the Forum Boarium. Around the grounds cult residing in the Roman heritage mitopoietico about the last sovereign of Rome and the gods who invest them with royal power, it is assumed that they stem from a double tradition built at the beginning of the fifth century BC when the Senate of Rome and Aristodemus of Cumae are opponents in a public process for the allocation of the legacy of Tarquinius Superbus, the parties would, therefore, used genealogical reconstructions opposed to each other because they refer to different mythical characters that legitimize their requests for allocation of this legacy.
