Abstract:
Maaloula is a Christian village with exceptional architecture and location. It has a world reputation due to its dialect; people converse and write in the Aramaic language. It is one of the Qalamoun's three villages with Bakhaa and Jabaden. Consequently, the village has attracted linguists worldwide; moreover, it has been the goal of many travellers since the 19th century. Like many of the traditional sites, Maaloula was affected by modern lifestyles and changing needs. These factors altered the village's architecture and construction techniques. This paper highlights the main characteristics that have been identified by Maaloula's situation. The article will cover various traditional features and the main typology of houses that are starting to disappear. Finally, the difficulties that Maaloula faced before, during and after the Syrian crisis.

Abstract:
In the conservation and development of traditional villages, it is vital to delineate reasonable village boundaries. At present, China’s traditional village boundaries are mainly defined through the boundaries of village construction land in its land policy. This approach ignores the "natural" state of traditional village boundaries and does not truly reflect villagers’ use of their villages. Using the constituent line segments of traditional village boundaries as parameters, we delineate a series of traditional village boundaries and constructed an assessment system for traditional village boundaries in terms of the convenience of villagers’ activities and their habitual use of village space. We used the delineation of the boundary of Haishangqiao village in the Yiluo River Basin in China as an example to test the effectiveness of the traditional village boundary delineation method and assessment system. The results show the following: (1) The virtual line segments connecting the buildings on the traditional village boundary are the main factors affecting the delineation of the traditional village boundary. (2) The amplitude of vibration and the global deviation of traditional village boundaries are the main influencing factors of complexity. (3) The complexity of traditional village boundaries is negatively correlated with the convenience of villagers’ activities. (4) The complexity of traditional village boundaries is negatively correlated with the emptiness of the internal space of traditional villages. The results of this study can provide practical reference values for scholars of rural planning, rural construction, rural conservation, rural management, and rural research.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to analyze the justification for the involvement of Traditional Villages in the implementation of the prevention and control of the Covid 19 Pandemic in Yang Api Village and Peninjoan Village. The Bali Provincial Government synergizes activities to prevent the transmission of the Corona Virus (Covid-19) by involving Indigenous Villages in Bali. The implementation of policies such as PPKM in traditional villages cannot be carried out alone by the government but requires cooperation with various parties, including the community, health workers and security officers. In general, Babinkamtibmas are security officers in the village. However, in Bali, every traditional village has a pecalang as a traditional security officer based on traditional local wisdom. The local government through the Decree on the formation of the Customary Village-based Mutual Assistance Task Force has provided space for indigenous village communities to independently handle the Covid-19 pandemic faced by the Fire and Peninjoan Traditional Villages. With the provision of this space, the Covid-19 Gotong Royong Task Force can handle the ongoing pandemic on its own, starting from education, socialization, prevention and even handling. In addition, traditional villages also receive support from the Village Service so that they can coordinate with each other. The maintenance of conduciveness in the village is carried out well, with the synergy of traditional villages with official villages in handling Covid-19. The involvement of elements of the Traditional Village (pecalang) in a pandemic emergency situation is indeed possible and does not become a serious problem because what is put forward is the principle of benefit for humanity. Meanwhile, the success rate of involving traditional pecalang in Yang Api and Peninjoan Villages has worked well, although in August there was a surge in people infected with Covid 19, but it was more due to the many traditional events in the village, and not because of the negligence of the Covid task force in synergizing its main functions. The positive performance of the involvement of traditional villages in pandemic prevention needs to be continued in the future for activities that benefit the indigenous village community.

Abstract:
The druwe lands in question are lands controlled by traditional villages and scientific-technically called ulayat lands, customary lands. These lands in the traditional village awig-awig are called druwe desa which consist of laba pura land, field land, market land, setra land, bukit land, AYDS land, PKD land. Most of the druwe land in this village has been converted into full individual land through conversion according to the UUPA. One of the criteria for the existence of a traditional village can be measured by the sustainability of this druwe desa land as one of the village assets, both as material and immaterial assets. The conversion of druwe desa land often causes prolonged conflicts due to late awareness of the importance of preserving village druwe land. The potential of the druwe desa land when explored and adapted to the development of tourism in Bali can be a bonus for the village government and its krama desa (village residents) in achieving prosperity. To achieve this goal requires high awareness and commitment from krama desa, village government (custom and service), local government and government through policies in growing a culture of village manners in order to maintain the realization of the Tri Hitakarana philosophy in traditional villages which is used as an advantage for sustainable investment and as well as in strengthening the existence of traditional villages.

Abstract:
The Caga Traditional Village, which is located in Pejeng Kangin Village, Tampak Siring District, is one of the traditional villages that is currently seriously developing the village's potential as a tourist village. One of the efforts to improve that is now being promoted is regarding the cleanliness of the village. However, currently there is no comprehensive system capable of managing most of the waste generated by villagers. This village already has a waste bank but it only manages around 30% of the total waste generated. Organic waste which is much larger in quantity is still dumped in the "teba" or backyard. Another problem is the presence of residual waste, which has so far been collected and then transported to a landfill (TPS). The problem raised in this "community service program" is the public's ignorance of government policies regarding waste management and the proper procedures for managing waste from sources. Therefore, to support the government's efforts in realizing a waste management system from sources and to support the efforts of traditional villages to develop their potential as a tourism village, education on waste management from sources in the traditional village of Caga, Pejeng Kangin was implemented. Activities that have been carried out include the socialization of government regulations regarding waste processing at the source, optimization of waste banks, and processing of organic waste using the composting method. The implementation of Waste Processing from the Source by the Traditional Village of Caga, Tampaksiring District, Gianyar " received a good reception from the community and full support from the management of the Caga Traditional Village.

Abstract:
Traditional settlement space contains regional, natural, economic, historical, and cultural characteristics. The spatial texture serves as a material carrier of rural life and production and a vital landscape resource for the traditional villages. Traditional rural settlements have formed relatively unique and stable spatial form genes over time, which contain the “order” and “law” of spatial creation traditionally established in villages. The metropolis erodes traditional village spaces due to fast socioeconomic development and urbanization. In addition, the lack of adequate recognition and continuation of spatial texture in current mainstream village construction planning methods also limits the ability of villages to adapt to environmental changes and promote self-repair and adjustment, which, in turn, causes the gradual disappearance of their distinctive appearance. The reason is the need for more quantitative research and planning on the genes controlling the evolution of spatial texture morphology in traditional villages. They are faced with issues such as blind construction and development, a fracture in the rural characteristic spatial texture inheritance, and a loss of the distinctive vernacular landscape. Adopting an objective and in-depth approach to the cognition of traditional village space texture is an essential demand for the preservation, optimization, and renewal of the spatial appearance of rural settlements. We use the spatial genes of village settlements as its starting point. It then uses the spatial texture of village settlements connected to gene information mining as its specific method. We investigate the autogenous law of traditional village spatial form and determine its application using the CityEngine parametric platform, digitalization, and 3D visualization as the applied technical means. The feasibility and implementation path of the parameterization technique are explored using the traditional village of Xiaoxi in western Hunan Province as an example. We effectively promote the integration of rural spatial landscape resources, feature assessment, optimization guidance, and management control and provide an innovative research perspective and scientific planning path for analyzing the spatial morphological evolution of traditional villages.

Abstract:
Traditional villages are the place where national culture is nurtured and inherited. Due to the acceleration of urbanization, the protective exploitation of traditional villages is an urgency in many regions of the world. Under the perspective of the “Space Gene”, we define the connotation of the traditional village space gene, which refers not only to a space combination model, but also the basic inheritance unit of the sustainable development of traditional villages. We further propose the Quantitative Inheritance System Model of Traditional Village Space Genes, which reveals the logic behind the formation of traditional village material forms and builds a quantitative index system for traditional village forms. We take Shibadong Village as an example to prove the model. The results demonstrate that although the four camps in Shibadong Village belong to the same ethnic group and the same village, there are still apparent differences in morphological features. Through the model, we can turn from the “built form” research from the perspective of material space to the “deep structure” research behind it, which can provide scientific guidance for the planning and designs of traditional villages to inherit the history and culture and to protect the diversity of world culture.

Abstract:
With the rapid development of urbanization and modernization, the population of traditional villages migrates into surrounding areas, causing the hollowing of traditional villages. The disintegration of China’s traditional village means the loss of historical memory and cultural characteristics of ethnic regions, seriously endangering the country’s cultural heritage. To better understand the hollowing phenomenon, this study analyzed 2645 villages from the Chinese traditional village catalogue (Batch 5) and evaluated different village attributes, including location, household registration, permanent population, number of traditional buildings, cultural relics, historical buildings, and non-heritage representative projects. We constructed an evaluation index system and used the entropy weight method, comprehensive evaluation method, and correlation analysis method to quantitatively assess the characteristics and influencing factors of hollowing among traditional Chinese villages. The main results are as follows: ① The hollowing index was above 0.5; most traditional villages have entered the stage of high hollowing. ② The traditional villages with hollowing index above 0.9 comprised 92%, and those between 0.8 and 0.9 made up 6%. Those with hollowing index at intervals 0.7–0.8, 0.6–0.7, and 0.5–0.6 accounted for 0.98%, 0.30%, and 0.11%, respectively. ③ Population hollowing is the fundamental cause of traditional village hollowing. In more than 99% of traditional villages, the population hollowing index was greater than 0.7. ④ More than 99% of traditional villages have a building hollowing index greater than 0.4, and more than 92% of the villages had a per capita number below 0.1. ⑤ The cultural hollowing rate for most traditional villages was very high. The cultural hollowing index for more than 99% of traditional villages was greater than 0.7. This study provides references for government administrators and scholars in rural revitalization and traditional village hollowing governance.

Abstract:
As an important relic of traditional Chinese culture, traditional villages have important cultural values. With the continuous deepening of modern urbanization and the development of rural tourism, the village landscape is also facing profound challenges. In the context of rural revitalization and tourism development, it is necessary to strengthen the landscape identity of traditional villages. Based on the background of rural revitalization, this article reviews and discusses the related concepts and research status of traditional village landscapes, the identity of village landscapes and existing problems in landscapes, and remodeling strategies by sorting out relevant research literature at home and abroad in recent years. People’s awareness of local landscape identity reshapes the landscape uniqueness of traditional villages so that the local culture and foreign culture can reach a state of balance and integration. The village landscape identity and the impact of digital technology and self-media platforms on landscape remodeling are reviewed and discussed. The study found that the landscape identity of traditional villages is reflected in the activity places with local regional cultural characteristics and relies on the spiritual emotions of the villagers. For the existing problems in the landscape, a landscape remodeling strategy is proposed to restore people’s awareness of local landscape identity and reshape the landscape uniqueness of traditional villages.

Abstract:
Understanding the characteristics of the traditional village distribution contributes to the formulation of relevant protection and development strategies. We adopted a series of spatial analysis methods to investigate the characteristics of the traditional village distribution in China by using the watershed as the research unit. Moreover, we conducted quantitative and qualitative analyses of the relevant influencing factors affecting the distribution pattern using Geodetector and mathematical statistics. The findings indicate that traditional villages are distributed unevenly across watershed units. High–High clusters tend to occur at the boundaries of first-level watersheds. Traditional villages have a clear agglomeration trend in space, with a concentrated and contiguous distribution pattern based on the “core density area–ring-core expansion group–belt area”. The key factors affecting the traditional village distribution are annual precipitation, annual average temperature, and river density. The traditional village number has a clear inverted U-shaped relationship with the annual average temperature, river density, and road density. The study reveals the complex and various characteristics of the traditional village distribution and its influence mechanism and offers scientific advice for traditional villages’ future protection and development.

In the New era, Bali was hegemonized by the politics of the State's law against traditional villages. There is a response from Bali Provincial Government to create a policy to protect traditional villages in Bali. The power of Bali in the traditional village is maintaining Balinese culture based on Hinduism and the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana. Relevant critical theories in this article's discussion are public policy theory which is micro, hegemonic theory, power relation theory and deconstruction theory. Qualitative method with case study design in traditional village of Kuta is used as the research of cultural studies. The result of the research explains that public policy in Bali in defending traditional village is that Bali Provincial Government responds to state law politics by establishing Bali Provincial Regulation. However, when the Provincial Regulation of Bali No. 3 of 2001 on traditional village, the traditional village of Kuta responded to Article 3 paragraph (6) was not accepted by the prajuru and also received a response from the traditional village council, so the pros and cons of the traditional village in Bali emerged.

Abstract:
Chinese traditional villages, as the space carriers of Chinese excellent traditional culture, are a nonrenewable cultural heritage with rich value connotations. The primary consideration for the protection of the authenticity of traditional villages as a historical and cultural heritage is the continuation of spatial authenticity. The inheritance and shaping of traditional characteristics requires the study of the laws of traditional villages’ spatial form. Spatial texture is an important landscape resource for traditional villages, and it is also a space carrier to display and carry the historical and cultural characteristics of the village. However, the current practice of village planning and construction has destroyed this original spatial texture, resulting in a rupture of the inheritance of traditional characteristics of village space. The fundamental reason lies in the lack of emphasis on the subjectivity and regularity of village space and the lack of quantitative analysis and planning application of the inherent laws of spatial texture. Based on the integration of inheritance and transformation, this research proposes to use the advantages of digitization, visualization, and dynamics in parametric technology to quantitatively analyze the internal laws of the village spatial texture and assist the planning and design of the village spatial texture, in order to effectively promote the benign inheritance and optimization of the traditional characteristics of the village spatial texture which makes the planned spatial texture both traditional and modern. The research results show that (1) the parametric-based planning technology can better analyze the existing laws of the village spatial texture in a comprehensive, quantitative, and precise manner. (2) The parametric technology has a relatively high value in the planning and design of the village spatial texture. Due to strong applicability, it can invert the spatial form of the village and optimize the planning scheme by adjusting parameters and rules. (3) Although the parametric planning and design party has certain artificial intelligence, it cannot completely replace the human brain. The planning scheme generated by the method cannot be directly applied but can be used to assist the design scheme. It needs to be adjusted and corrected via the subjective initiative of people and wider participation.

Abstract:
Traditional rural Chinese landscapes have fragmented from the impact of rapid urbanisation and modernisation. Aiming to address this tough issue, the Chinese central government proposed the Traditional Villages Project, which is top-down traditional village management and conservation policy. A traditional village landscape network (TVLN) can be used to integrate rural landscapes and ensure the unified protection of natural and cultural landscapes. This paper aimed to establish a method of building a TVLN through three main steps: the calculation of the connection strength of traditional villages, calculation of the tie strength between traditional villages, and establishment of a TVLN. The results demonstrated the rich layers and stable structure of the Yuan River Basin’s TVLN, but there was a hidden risk in its stability due to the existence of tangent and isolated points. This TVLN quantitatively examined the characteristics and relationships of traditional villages and provided data support for the approval of traditional villages and protection policy formulation. A TVLN can support the overall conservation of traditional village landscapes, enhance their comprehensive value, and promote the sustainable management and cross-regional protection of traditional village landscapes.

Abstract:
Industrial transformation has been regarded as an important measure to promote traditional village revitalization. Research on the spatial pattern and influence mechanism of industrial transformation in traditional villages is urgently needed. In this context, this study takes the 211 national traditional villages in Fujian Province of China as research objects and uses GIS spatial analysis and geographical detectors to analyze the spatial pattern and influence mechanism of industrial transformation in traditional villages. The results show that: (1) the scale of traditional village industry presents the characteristics of wavy growth. High- and medium-density cluster areas were identified. (2) Traditional villages can be categorized into three types, not transformed, to be transformed and transformed villages. These three stages of transformation have different features of industry development and different dominant industries. (3) The core factors affecting the industrial transformation of traditional villages show obvious differences at different transformation stages and spatial differences in coastal and inland areas. Therefore, policies and measures should be customized to local conditions to improve the development quality of traditional villages and promote the industrial transformation and upgrading of traditional villages. This study improves the research on the transformation and development mechanism of traditional village industry from the perspective of industrial revitalization in theory and provides experience and models as reference for the revitalization of traditional village industry in practice.

This research aims to explore the understanding of village officials and traditional leaders in realizing the village accountability and the philosophical value of local wisdom of traditional village by supporting the accountability of BUMDes. The qualitative research method was selected in this study with informants consisting of traditional leaders, village officials, government representatives, and local village communities. Data were obtained through direct interviews and Focus Group Discussion attended by resource persons related to the BUMDes. In terms of village accountability, traditional leaders and village officials have a strong will in preparing financial reports and budget of BUMDes. The problem faced in realizing village accountability is the inadequate capacity of human resources to prepare financial reports and budgets of BUMDes.

Abstract:
In the process of urbanization in China, traditional villages are facing many challenges and impacts which impose certain constraints on their sustainable development. Based on the perspective of resilience theory, this paper uses fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis to construct a complex causal model of traditional village conservation and development, conducts an empirical study on 28 national traditional villages in Liandu District and Qingyuan County, Lishui City, Zhejiang Province, and analyzes four high-level history paths by using fsQCA3.0 software (Developed by the American scholar Charles Ragin et al.), based on which four traditional conservation and development models are proposed and concretized into different conservation and development strategies for different village types. The research analysis shows that (1) resilience theory is applicable to the study of traditional village conservation and development, and has certain relevance and can effectively improve the response ability of traditional villages to uncertainty risks; (2) The framework of traditional village protection and development is based on landscape environmental protection, guaranteed by village industry development, and supported by other influencing factors (natural disaster response, social organization, and cultural heritage); (3) under the perspective of resilience theory, there are four models of traditional village conservation and development (JSC model, Z&C model, J&W model, and S&C model), which have good explanatory power and coverage and can address the real problems of different village types in a targeted manner.

Abstract:
Fire is a global problem for traditional villages, especially those dominated by the use of wood and thatch. These places are often crowded, which leads to the rapid spread of fire. The traditional villages on the island of Sumba are architecturally striking, with their tall houses interspersed with ancestral tombs. They are set on an island of grassland landscapes managed using fire. There is little local ability to suppress village fires as they are remote from firefighting services and access to the dwellings is poor. Documentary evidence along with satellite imagery of hotspots have been used to trace the fires on Sumba since 2001. Little meteorological data are accessible for Sumba, so we have used global homogenized records, reassessments and projections of climate to examine long-term change in Sumba. There is a dry season in July–September, which corresponds with the period of most frequent fires. The number of dry-season fires correlates with the number of consecutive dry days, which has been used to establish a likely increase in the potential for fires in the future. There is increased effort to reduce the impact of village fires. Approaches could include reducing the flammability of traditional materials, detection systems and enhanced support of village firefighting capabilities. These may be difficult to introduce given the importance of the architectural heritage and the religious context of village layout, design and governance.

The research finds that the state’s naming the village as a “Chinese Traditional Village” has promoted local rural tourism, which plays an important role in improving the visibility of the village, increases the income of the villagers, and enhances a stronger sense of attachment and satisfaction of the villagers. The pride of the villagers in turn makes them cherish the history of their village. This paper argues that this pride becomes the capital or incentive for the villagers to sustain its continuity.

In ArcGIS platform through SOA to establish criterion framework for recognizing the types of village pedigree. Finally, the classification of villages was spatially visualized, and a pedigree was constructed according to the type context. The research result indicates: (1) The aggregation mode of traditional villages in the south of the Jiangnan region presents the characteristics of local aggregation and partial dispersion, which are directly affected by factors such as elevation, water system, and road system. (2) Analysis of the spatial pedigrees of traditional villages through spatial types and spatial growth patterns revealed four pedigree types, including spatial environment pedigree, the spatial organization pedigree, spatial morphological pedigree, and architectural form pedigree. (3) The pedigree shows and distinguishes independent developmental context and evolved form, presenting an extended pattern of prototypes and sub-types.
