This doctoral thesis aims at providing a better knowledge of basketry traditions and plantbased raw materials that were used for this craft in the Bashiic islands located in Southern Taiwan and Northern Philippines. These islands are excellent context to carry out ethnobotanical studies: Batanes and Lanyu Islands are both isolated contexts and host numerous vegetal taxa, most of which are indigenous or even endemic and can be used as markers of contact. Handicraft is mostly made of plant fibres of specific properties, such as limited length, flexibility, strength, un-putrescibility, among others. Creating a reference collection of Ivatan (Batanes Islands) and Tao (Yami) (Lanyu Island) present-day handicraft will be useful in identifying and comparing plants and the techniques used for manufacturing ancient handicrafts. This type of analysis can be applied to archaeological artefacts where botanical micro remains- such as anatomical parts, starch grains and phytoliths- may have been preserved. Some baskets which are used to protect bodies and things are made into a knotting-tying technique employing Musa textilis- abaca and other banana species fibers, these baskets are representing a unique knowledge. Musa spp. status within other useful forest products can be of great interest to understand human and plant propagation through times, especially the Austronesian diaspora.

This study investigates whether geographical indication may represent an instrument to support socioeconomic and human development of women who are members of the Association for the Development of the Irish Lace from Divina Pastora – ASDEREN and work with Irish lace. The methodological framework consists of a case study based on interviews with three different groups of Irish lace artisans as well as with representatives of public and private institutions which are or might be involved with ASDEREN. This work shows that products made of Irish lace need to be in line with customers’ needs and tastes, maintaining their authenticity and originality at the same time. Capacity building of new artisans and development of experienced artisans’ skills are considered mechanisms which may foster the activity, although they are not sufficient to guarantee its sustainability. Irish lace shall increase its contribute to family income; in this case geographical indication could play an important role by linking handicraft products to their place of origin – Divina Pastora (Sergipe) – and thus leading to attract more customers interested in the differentiated nature of these products. However, in order to achieve effective results, the cooperation among some institutions with ASDEREN should continue along with public policies focused on strengthening the production of Irish lace within the community and supporting the process of socioeconomic and human development. All of this shall be in accordance with the economist Amartya Sen’s capability approach, empowering people to live their lives the way they wish.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in methodologies for productive protection of traditional craftsmanship, the motivation for which may be to protect intangible cultural heritage or to improve the quality of life of particular communities or ethnic groups. This approach has already been widely adopted in the social enterprise sector (social enterprises are an innovative type of organization which make use of a commercial development strategy to earn a surplus that can be applied to solving social or environmental problems). The present study explores how the intermediary mechanism for promoting productive protection of traditional craftsmanship that is formed through the combination of economic thinking with social enterprises’involvement in the productive protection of traditional craftsmanship operates to encouraging artisans to continue to produce craft and to pass their skills and knowledge onto others . The present study makes use of a case study of the Dropenling Handicraft Development Center in Lhasa and Shangri-La , a social enterprise whose mission is to improve skills, knowledge and resources for Tibetan artisans(including farmers living in remote communities, women, and the physically and mentally handicapped) so that they can preserve their heritage, create high quality and innovative products, and earn income and recognition. The Dropenling Handicraft Development Center has been the recipient of UNESCO’s Award of Excellence for Handicrafts in recognition of its achievements. The Center has coordinated the efforts of Tibetan artisans, business enterprises and workshops to arrange local handcrafts workshop tour. The tour offers the rare opportunity meet Tibetan artisans and learn artistic heritage. This study analyses the approach to productive protection of traditional craftsmanship, and shows how the theory and practice of the Dropenling Handicraft Development Center’s efforts to productive protection of traditional craftsmanship are founded on production processes and technical know-how. As social enterprises, the Dropenling Handicraft Development Center are committed to fair trade, and thus artisans receive fair wages. Many of the artisans work at home, around the schedule of their traditional farming activities. The Dropenling Handicraft Development Center does not like conventional business enterprises seeking to maximize profits by focusing on simplifying the process of handicrafts production to reduce costs, along with the development of a Trainer system, undertaking in-depth investigation of Tibet’srapidly-disappearing traditional craftsmanship, the materials used, and the cultural significance of the crafts, and then applying this knowledge to the design process. The flexible operational model adopted by the Center encourages more artisans to continue producing traditional crafts, while helping to improve their craft skills, develop innovative products, and become competitive in the world market.
