Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract: La Femme sans sépulture (2002) by Assia Djebar (1935-2015) recontextualizes in Algeria the link between the writing of erased colonial history and archeology. This is not without reviving the now established dialogue between psychoanalysis and archeology grounded by Freud's Delusions and Dreams in Jensen's Gradiva (1907). The Freudian interpretation of the novela, published in 1903, fixes the association now admitted between analytical experience and the practice of archeology. Djebar's novel reconstitutes the life of the moudjahida , Zoulikha Oudaï, by intertwining witness narratives collected by the author to the interpretation of archeological traces in Césarée's landscape, the actual Cherchell. The example of this attention to archeological traces and their interpretation within narrative forms orients new perspectives on Algerian historiographies. Djebar, as a historian by training, gets closer to the discourse of archeology to find a response to the writing of an erased, incomplete and often destroyed historical substance that needs to be imagined. This contribution develops the notion of "chain of signifiers" to decipher the process induced by the text and offered to the work of interpretation by an absolute reader.

Abstract:
The article examines the first phase of the universalistic interpretations in Juri Lotman’s semiotics, which is characterized by holism and maximalism derived from the Saussurean cultural concept. There is an analysis of Juri Lotman’s 1967 lecture, previously unpublished, where universal status is accorded to text functions (including magic functions). Such an approach is a substantial revision of the Saussurean understandings of the relationship between language and speech. This interpretation of magic is compared with the examination of the same concept in Juri Lotman’s 1981 article “Contract and self-sacrifice as archetypical cultural models”, which substantially contradicts the concept developed in his 1967 lecture. Both these magic models produce a number of objections, and apparently seem to bear the deforming traces of their respective universalistic theoretical schema.

Abstract:

After studying the prevailing expressionistic attitude in Benn’s early poems such as “Nachtcafé,” the paper traces the loosening of imagery in Benn’s more psychoanalytic and mythological poems. The paper then offers a close reading of “Das sind doch Menschen,” a poem from Benn’s latest period, which exemplifies a distinct break in his poetics and the emergence of a markedly performative and personal voice. The backdrop of expressionism, his early fascination with mythology and mid-career attempts to achieve a perfect lyric structure continued to have obvious influences on Benn’s later writing but this personal and anecdotal period occasions a new balance between poetic image, lyric self, and abstract statement. In addition, the paper also traces Benn’s attempts to recover a more agentic lyric self within the larger poetic context of the post-war era, turning to poetic theories advanced by contemporaneous poets such as Ingeborg Bachmann and in Benn’s own momentous lecture on poetics, Probleme der Lyrik.

Abstract:
The following is a revised version of the second Woodhouse Memorial Lecture given at both the Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Auckland in September 2018. It traces the history and policy iterations of New Zealand's accident compensation scheme that flowed from the 1967 Woodhouse Report (the Report), a Royal Commission report chaired by Sir Owen Woodhouse. It discusses the features of the Report and the determination it showed to get rid of the common law action for damages for personal injury. It analyses the degree to which the Report was not followed in the journey it took through the political decision-making system. There is a critical analysis of the delivery of benefits, the administration of the scheme and its financing. The performance in accident prevention and rehabilitation is briefly covered. The method of settling disputes in the scheme has seen an unwelcome return to legalism. The lecture concludes with a strong plea to remove the anomalies created by the accident compensation scheme between the vicitims of accident who receive earnings related-benefit and those who are dealt with under the Social Security Act 2018 under which they receive flat rate benefits. The lecture concludes with some lessons for policymakers.

Abstract:
The talk traces briefly the development and changes of surgical training in the English- speaking world in the early days and the trials and tribulations of surgical training in Singapore a few decades ago. The factors that brought about the surge of American surgery from late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century are discussed. Structured surgical training leading to the exit point was introduced by William Halsted of Johns Hopkins Hospital around 1892, a system that was later adopted by all other medical disciplines and by all other hospitals in the US. It is considered to be the prime mover of the rapid progress of American medicine. Training surgeons to only the entry point while leaving the competence of trainees to chance, used to be common in the British surgical world. The trend now favours surgical training to the exit point. It is also the system being adopted in Singapore. Increasing demands of high standard of patient care and public accountability no longer allow us to be casual and permissive mentors of future generations of surgeons. Proper surgical upbringing requires a good structured programme that itself needs to be accredited and periodically reviewed. It also requires that discipline be observed on the part of trainees. Knowledge and skills are within the capability of our mentors to impart, but inculcation of good attitude and ethics in trainees is a harder goal to achieve. Key words: Attitude, Discipline, Training

Abstract:
The relationship between live theatre and the rapidly developing multimedia technologies has been ambiguous and uneasy, both in the practical and the academic arena. Many have argued that such technologies put the theatre and other live arts at risk, while others have seen them as a means of preserving the elusive traces of live performance, making current work accessible to future generations of artists and scholars. A few performance and production teams have entered the fray, deliberately pushing the technology to its limits to see how useful it may (or may not) be in dealing with the theatre. One such team – comprising Lizbeth Goodman, Tony Coe, and Huw Williams – forms the Open University BBC's Multimedia Shakespeare Research Project, and on 4 September 1997 they presented their work as the annual BFI Lecture at the Museum of the Moving Image on London's South Bank. What follows is an edited and updated transcript of the lecture – which was itself a ‘multimedia performance’ – intended to spark debate about the possibilities and limitations of using multimedia in creating and preserving ‘live’ theatre. Lizbeth Goodman is Lecturer in Literature at the Open University, where she chairs both the Shakespeare Multimedia Research Project and the new ‘Shakespeare: Text and Performance’ course. Tony Coe is Senior Producer at the OU/BBC, where Huw Williams was formerly attached to the Interactive Media Centre, before becoming Director of Createc for the National Film School, and subsequently Director of Broadcast Solutions, London. Together the team has created a range of multimedia CD-ROMs designed to test the limits and possibilities of new technologies for theatre and other live art forms – beginning with Shakespeare

SummaryIf the perception of space is not built independently on each sensitivo-sensory channel, it should be possible to find traces of interdependence in the adult subject, eg between the semicircular canals and the extraocular muscles in the coding of the direction of the visual space. A geometric study of this hypothesis faces the first results of a clinical research. It seems that this track could provide the therapist with interesting topological data.*Lecture given at the College de France, Paris, on November the 16th 1996, to the members of "L'Association Française de Strabologie" interested by the postural control. Abstract:
The three big Es of transportation are Energy, Efficiency, and the Environment. As the clouds of global climate change and the desire to rely less on Mid-East crude builds, how do manufacturers and refiners reconcile the needs of consumer acceptance and governmental regulation? How can policies and practices be united so that everyone involved works to the common goal of personal mobility? This lecture traces recent events that have resulted in paradox on top of paradox. As industry continues to react to the latest round of air pollution regulations, where are we headed as far as new CAFE limits and the potential for additional longer term controls related to the greenhouse effect? These are issues that will affect those in the equipment and oil industry, as well as the consumer, in the days ahead.

Abstract:
This paper traces the evolution of enhanced boiling surfaces. Early work was highly empirical and done in industrial research. The 1968 Milton patent [“Heat Exchange System,” U.S. Patent 3,696,861] described the first porous coated surface, and the 1972 Webb patent [“Heat Transfer Surface Having a High Boiling Heat Transfer Coefficient,” U.S. Patent 3,521,708] described a “structured” tube surface geometry. The first fundamental understanding of the “pore-and-tunnel” geometry was published by Nakayama in 1980 [Nakayama, W., Daikoku, T., Kuwahara, H., and Nakajima, T. 1980, “Dynamic Model of Enhanced Boiling Heat Transfer on Porous Surfaces Part I: Experimental Investigation,” J. Heat Transfer, 102, pp. 445–450]. Webb and Chien’s flow visualization allowed observation of the evaporation in the subsurface tunnels [Chien, L.-H., and Webb, R. L., 1998, “Visualization of Pool Boiling on Enhanced Surfaces,” Exp. Fluid Thermal Sci., 16b, pp. 332–341]. They also performed an experimental parametric study that defines the effect of pore diameter and pitch on the boiling performance. The progression of work on analytical boiling models is also reviewed.

Abstract:
Al-Qur'an therapy is a therapy using verses in the Al-Qur'an as a source of inspiration and media to help overcome spiritual, mental, physical and social problems. This includes reading, memorizing, understanding, living, and finding the relationship between the meaning of verses in the Koran and everyday problems and experiences. The discovery of meaning and wisdom allows students to feel emotional balance and improve their well-being, as well as being a medium for learning and understanding the traces of prophetic teachings in everyday life. An understanding of the traces of prophetic teachings was studied in the Prophetic Leadership Lecture at the Professional Psychology Study Program at the Masters Level at the Islamic University of Indonesia. One of the methods in this course is self-reflection on the four dimensions of prophetic leadership: Sidiq, Amanah, Tabligh, Fathanah. Based on self-reflection, several themes were found, namely finding new drugs, being grateful, feeling calm, and practicing knowledge. These findings enable students to become better individuals, to understand themselves and others, to function their minds and hearts through appreciating the values found in the Al-Qur'an.

This paper is the ms. of my inaugural lecture at the Aarhus School of Business, 26th September, 1995, with minor modifications. It traces some of the basic assumptions of Chomskyan theories of syntax, as they have determined the requirements of a syntactic description of English sentences containing the verb seem at various points in time. It is shown that although the purpose of linguistic description must be taken into account when choosing between competing, descriptively adequate grammars, this will not be enough unless the goal of linguistic explanation is accessible to independent investiga-tion. It is argued that a reformulation of the issue between functional explanation or not in linguistics may overcome the problem.

Abstract:
The artist traces his work from its beginnings behind the Iron Curtain in 1967, when cybernetics became the driving force of his creative process, to the present day. Given the scarcity of information and the absence of access to Western experimental work in Romania, this step was the unlikely result of a purely personal train of thought. He went on to lecture and write extensively to promote cybernetics and explain his approach to art, which was highly unconventional in the context of the times. Two directions emerged and remain the focus of his work today: the S-Band, an interactive art machine, and the Meta-Phorm, a behavioral geometry articulated by cybernetic mechanisms.

Abstract:
The connections between people, careers, events, and decisions provide the focus for this lecture, which traces the story of a 38-year career as a dietitian, spanning the country from east to west, through the centre, and back again. The lecture emphasizes the importance of taking inspiration from family and events, developing and maintaining lifelong friendships, and commitments. Finding opportunity in the midst of adversity is also a theme. The author's career begins with a clinical and administrative experience and moves into the community when she becomes a public health nutritionist. While the budget restrictions of the 1990s were challenging, the author recounts opportunities with key issues such as folic acid, prenatal nutrition, and heart health. A provincial food and nutrition plan was created, including a focus on food security and its connection to poverty. This is linked to the roots of the dietetic profession with the Lillian Massey School of Household Science and Art established in the 1890s. As the author recounts her journey, dietitians are reminded that working with partners and other disciplines provides the foundation for success and will be needed as we address the current issue of obesity.

In the past decades many researchers explored successfully the traces of the library of Miklós Oláh. However, the majority of data are either archive mentions or library records that were made without handling the books. During the preparative research of this current lecture, we found 202 works that were once part of Miklós Oláh’s library. We can now form a view on Oláh’s deep and extensive (eruditive) intellectual horizon and his reading habits. The latter can also be analysed by Oláh’s marginal-notes written in his printed books. Handling of his books also gives the opportunity to get a deeper understanding of how his library was growing. The notes of previous owners of Oláh’s books provide rich data to reconstruct the humanist archbishop’s network.

I argue that The Neutral is firmly rooted in the tradition that Brian Massumi defined as “nomad thought” in his foreword to Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism & Schizophrenia. The essay traces the genealogy of this tradition and the term of the neutral, beginning with Maurice Blanchot’s work and his own concept of the neutral and ending with Barthes’ so far largely unexplored engagement with the texts of Deleuze. Elusive as the neutral figure is meant to remain, it emerges as a theorist’s effort to exercise a form of non-dualistic and non-hierarchical thinkin

This essay works on the links and shifts between Paul Celan's poem "A Leaf. Treeless" and Bertolt Brecht's "To Those Born After" as displaced expressions of the simultaneous needs of assertion and perils of silencing faced by poetry in dark times. It works out the way in which both poets, in their particular ways and attending their own obstacles, present as a question what ideology tends to silence and display as a paradox the communal and individual claims to be alive through the action of poetry. It moves from T. S. Eliot's vegetal similes from his Virginia lectures of 1933 included in After Strange Gods, to Joseph Brodsky Nobel Prize lecture of 1987 in which he discusses Theodor Adorno's questioning of the relevance of poetry after Auschwitz. It also analyzes the way in which plants and human beings relate and interact based on their biological differences and equivalences both as individuals and as communities, and how this has been used both as metaphor and ideology, either to liberate, as it happens rhetorically in Brecht and Celan or to reinforce forbidences through ideological impositions, as it happens in Adorno. It goes back to T. S. Eliot's It traces the presence of plants as a metaphor for the human being in metaphors and ideology. KEYWORDS: Paul Celan, Bertolt Brecht, Poetry, Plants, Translations.
