Abstract:
This chapter explores the modalities of work survival dependent on material traces. These traces linger in the form of fragments of pottery, inscriptions, photos, films, and also scores. The function of museums and libraries is to preserve these trace-objects and make them accessible. There is significant research to do analyzing the role of such institutions within the choreographic field and explaining the likely specificity of the dance archive. Here the chapter mentions only the significance of the project begun by Rolf de Maré during the 1930s. This project was called the “Archives Internationales de la Danse.” The chapter puts aside the general question of the dance archive and its institutional management to focus solely on the different types of restaging, revival, and reconstruction that it makes possible.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses the problem of dealing with a ruptured, ligated or transected ureter, or a ureteric defect caused accidentally or intentionally by surgery. Ureteric strictures may occur as a result of tuberculosis or schistosomiasis. Tuberculous strictures may occur at either end of the ureter; schistosomal strictures occur primarily in the distal ureter. Ureteric stones are another cause of stricture formation and these tend to occur at the common sites of impaction of a stone; therefore, particularly just above the pelvic brim and just outside the bladder. It also develops the theme known as ‘bridging the gap’ and describes the techniques of ureteroureterostomy; the psoas hitch and Boari flap with ureteric reimplantation; transureteroureterostomy (TUU); and the ileal ureter; and briefly refers to renal autotransplantation. Finally, we introduce the concept of ‘complexity’ by reference to the problems of the patient with ureteric obstruction because of, or otherwise associated with radiotherapy.

Abstract:
In clinical practice, most reconstructive urological procedures performed are for urethral strictures and otherwise on the lower urinary tract. Bladder augmentation and substitution are widely used by urologists and increasingly so in other subspecialties across the spectrum of urology for what used to be reconstructive problems, but new problems have developed to challenge reconstructive urologists, requiring a different approach but based on the same general principles. Thus, as augmentation and substitution cystoplasty become increasingly part of ‘general urology’, so reconstructive urologists are adapting these principles to deal with the complications of the treatment of prostate cancer, gynaecological cancer and rectal cancer.

Abstract:
It may be difficult to imagine that a consequential black electoral politics evolved in the United States before the Civil War, for as of 1860, the overwhelming majority of African Americans remained in bondage. Yet free black men, many of them escaped slaves, steadily increased their influence in electoral politics over the course of the early American republic. Despite efforts to disfranchise them, black men voted across much of the North, sometimes in numbers sufficient to swing elections. In this meticulously-researched book, Van Gosse offers a sweeping reappraisal of the formative era of American democracy from the Constitution's ratification through Abraham Lincoln’s election, chronicling the rise of an organized, visible black politics focused on the quest for citizenship, the vote, and power within the free states. Full of untold stories and thorough examinations of political battles, this book traces a First Reconstruction of black political activism following emancipation in the North. From Portland, Maine and New Bedford, Massachusetts to Brooklyn and Cleveland, black men operated as voting blocs, denouncing the notion that skin color could define citizenship.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the early post-war history of the world economy as reviewed in the Survey. It first looks at the task of reconstruction, which the Survey considered to have been very successful. It then looks at the successful transition to rapid growth in the 1950s, though with persistent concern about the recurrence of crises. The evolution of the system of international trade and payments is analysed next, with world trade embarking in the 1950s on its major historical boom but showing from early on an East/West divide and greater difficulties in reconstructing the system of multilateral payments. Finally, the chapter looks at the early post-war experience of the ‘underdeveloped countries’, where poverty remained ‘as stubborn as ever’.

Abstract:
This chapter explores how missionary work that began as evangelical outreach developed into a system of shared grievances when African Americans began to see the meaningful parallels and symmetries between their own limited political influence in the Reconstruction South and African communities affected by colonialism. Drawing on the minutes of the annual meeting and publication records of the Mission Herald, the National Baptist Convention's monthly newsletter, the chapter traces African American engagement with Africa in the late nineteenth century through the transformation of a historically decentralized religious denomination into a collective space for civic mobilization, shaped by diasporic identification and linked social circumstances.

Tyler, Amanda L. Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199856664.003.0001.

Abstract:
The Introduction begins by exploring modern examples sanctioning the concept of the citizen enemy combatant, such as the War on Terror cases of José Padilla and Yaser Hamdi. It then suggests that the roots of this concept may be found in the World War II detention of Japanese Americans, including over 70,000 U.S. citizens. The Introduction continues by arguing that this modern conception of the citizen enemy combatant is impossible to reconcile with the historic understanding of the Suspension Clause and the habeas privilege that trace their origins to English legal tradition, an understanding that remained consistent well through Reconstruction. The Introduction concludes with an overview of the book.
