Abstract:
American town form consists of primary form - the layout of streets, lots and other features determined for a town at its inception - and secondary form - the fabric of building and usage that a town acquires over time. This thesis explores the primary and secondary form of ante-bellum Western Virginia Towns, and offers several interpretations of the cultural meaning recorded in town form.

Abstract:
Over 80-percent of the U.S. population lives in urban areas that occupy a mere 3-percent of the country's total area. Development problems and infrastructural stress caused by urban overpopulation can already be seen in the nation's largest cities. Scattered across North America are small towns that, at one time, were largely sustained by agriculture or industry, but have watched as farming and manufacturing operations leave them behind. Rooted in these economic conditions is the growing gap between metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. The high concentration of rural lands and high poverty rates in the South makes this region particularly vulnerable to the effects of rural economic distress, and put it in desperate need of solutions. For many small towns in Georgia, the last two decades have brought either rapid population growth, as seen in the areas surrounding Atlanta, or great population decline, most clearly depicted in the southeastern region of the state. Each condition produces a host of different challenges for these small communities, illustrating no simple solutions. It is the focus of this research to determine what proximities, economic assets, and formal characteristics are necessary for small towns in Georgia to successfully revitalize and grow. Furthermore, it is the aim of this research to present a means of analyzing the assets of small towns in order to determine where outside investment is most likely to make a difference, and how resources can best be utilized.

Abstract:
Art History
Ph.D.
"Prehistoric Town Planning in Crete" was published in 1950 by Richard Hutchinson. He determined there was no evidence of town planning on Minoan Crete except for two instances. Hutchinson's approach compared the layout of the few excavated Minoan towns to other contemporary sites, such as Kahun, Egypt and Harrappa, India. These towns were laid out in grid-like squares, on flat, level ground. Compared to these sites the settlements on Crete appeared as an amalgamation of disorganized, organic growth. More than half a century has elapsed between Hutchinson's article and this study. Within that time many more Minoan sites and towns have been excavated and published. This greater corpus offers an opportunity to examine Minoan town planning with a new eye. This greater number of excavated Minoan towns allows for a study of town planning by comparing Minoan communities to one another. When an investigation is done comparing sites within Crete only, a pattern starts to emerge. To accomplish this analysis nine elements of Minoan town planning are defined, examined at individual sites, and compared among settlements. These nine elements are: 1. A street system adhering to the natural contours of the land 2. Buildings arranged in irregular, attached blocks defined by the street system 3. A large plateia or centrally located community court easily accessible from all parts of the town 4. Other open public spaces throughout the settlement 5. An elite building near the plateia 6. Public buildings in which there is no habitation 7. Semi-public buildings 8. Built fortifications 9. Extramural dependencies, which are structural features or natural areas outside the borders of the town proper but are an integral part of the community This comparison elucidates a very specific and existing type of Minoan town planning. It began at least as early as Early Minoan II and reached its apogee in Late Minoan I. What at first glance looks random, is not. Minoan towns were laid out within the constraints of the local landscape and with the desired aesthetic. The result was a lifestyle in LM I far beyond subsistence living.

Abstract:
Despite all great words about public architecture with democracy and everyone's equal value in mind, I believe that a future belief and a common idea can often be lacking today. In my work, I have therefore decided to examine how a Town Hall can be used as a tool for creating a natural connection between citizens and authorities. Can the design of a Town Hall help to construct the democratic citizen? Can politics find its place in everyday life? My ambition has been to concretise the idealistic slogans.I have developed a number of requirements that the new Town Hall in Nynäshamn should match:- Create a Town Hall with an open cultural arena in center where the municipality appears as citizens own organisation rather than an authority. I am convinced that this aspect is at least as important as a functional program or attractive design.- A Town Hall that gives an insight into the authority's work. The politics must be visible and accessible for an ordinary citizen.- A flexible public solution that matches the requirements of change.- A distinct program that gives an understanding of the logic of the building, both interior and exterior.

The new Town Hall in Nynäshamn is a buildning made out of solid timber. My goal with this project was to try to understand solid timber as a material and it’s constructive properties. To help myself in the construction and design of the buildning i set up a few rules. For example that loadbearing walls can not have openings and that conventional doors shall only be used if nessesary. The building has been worked out through scetch models in different scales.

Abstract:
The project is based on the ambition of creating a modern town hall building which enables increased interaction between the activities of the municipality and its citizens. The building is constructed by 30 concrete arches which forms the two building volumes. The building meets Stadshusplatsen in northwest and Floravägen in southeast. The curved form of the building creates openings at the site which facilitates pedestrians to move freely between and through the building thereby connecting Stadshusplatsen and Floravägen. The facade is covered by glass to create visibility for the citizens to look into the daily activities of the municipality administration. The facade elements are tilted between the arches and rotated in relation to each other. The roof is also being formed by tilted rectangular elements. The building is designed to meet the programme specific requirements with an ability to cope with changing demands by its open structure.

When Tori Bush’s father died of chemical causes related to Agent Orange, she found herself obsessed with tracing dioxins, one of the main ingredient of Agent Orange in other American communities. She began to visit and interview residents of Mossville, Louisiana, a small town on the border of Texas, which has fourteen petrochemical facilities surrounding the town. The residents also had been exposed to dioxins. Grief and anger connected Tori to this story, but it is far larger—is the right to a healthy natural environment a part of our American citizenship?

Abstract:

Laugier’s Primitive Hut from 1755 depicts reason as a muse enthroned upon the ruins of the classical orders, pointing towards nature as a way forward. Similarly, in 1841 Joseph Paxton designed a glass conservatory at Chatsworth for the tropical Victoria regia water lily, which literally referenced the lily pad veins as structural system. This preoccupation with nature as a design generator continues in the 20th century with digital tools that derive architectural form using biomimicry, in the work of R & Sie. All these projects are based on a dialectic relationship between architecture and nature, where the particular model of nature is translated into form. This relationship in landscape architecture is discussed through the idea of the biomorphic. Applied as a guiding principle to investigate vegetation and plant form in the 17th Century Company’s Gardens arguing that the generation of the biomorphic can be adjusted to serve as a mechanism to understand plant form in terms of effect.

Bjernvinge, Emmie. "Town Hall in Strängnäs." Thesis, KTH, Arkitektur, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-261280.

Abstract:
My proposal to the Town Hall in Strängnäs is based on an analysis of what a town hall is - and who it is accessible for. As a starting point I studied the basilica, whose function in the city I find interesting. As a town hall in the antique Rome it was used for many various purposes, such as legal negotiations and trade. The space that the basilica was in the city has almost no equivalent in the city today, where the only public and accessible spaces available are the streets and the squares. The Town Hall in Strängnäs is an interpretation of the basilica: an indoors square accessible to the citizens of Strängnäs. The plot of the Town Hall is next to Västervikstorget, which during the summers functions as a junction point for the social and cultural life of Strängnäs. The Town Hall becomes an extension of Västervikstorget and creates space for the motion and vivacity in the area throughout the year.

Abstract:
Stadshusplatsen in Nynäshamn is a square with good prerequisites to become an oasis for the citys inhabitants. Though today the current town hall, a low-rise building, closes the square towards the south. The old town hall has lost its function as a uniting building and together with Folkets Hus, they form a wall that blocks the sun and the view towards the sea. The assignment was to draw a proposal for a new town hall where the current town hall is situated and to explore how the new structure can relate to an adjacent high-rise building and create new dimensions and prerequisites to the square. First of all, I chose to create a passage between Folkets Hus and the new town hall. This to let the sun shine in on the square and create a connection between the square and what is today the back of the town hall but has potential of becoming a sunny meeting point for the citizens of Nynäshamn. To find ways to create a connection in terms of design between the high-rise building and my proposal I looked at the base floor of the high-rise building, which consists of a pillar arcade. Based on this arcade two grids, one primary and one secondary, arise and creates the conditions of the building both spatially and structurally. In the intersections of the two grids I’ve placed pillars, one larger and one smaller type, to define spatialities both outside and inside the building. The two different pillar types also help to define in which zone of the building you are located. The smaller pillars represent a more intimate zone and the larger ones the public zones. In the more intimate zone, two cores of service have been placed. Furthermore, no fixed walls are used but the rooms are defined by columns and three different wall types: a light wall, a flexible sliding wall and a movable fabric wall.

Abstract:

To collect data for this report a field study was performed at an orphanage in Cape Town, South Africa. I carried out volunteer work for eight weeks to find out more about the children’s situations. I wanted to find out what it was like to work at an orphanage for children in need and what the employees were doing to help. The children’s ages ranged from five to eighteen years old and they all lived together, although boys and girls slept in different rooms.

Before I went to South Africa, I thought that an orphanage was a place for children without parents, who had been abandoned when they where infants. Some of the children at the orphanage come from situations like this, but many of them have family who they need help and protection from. Their own parents cannot take care of them because of different social problems such as sexual abuse, drug abuse or poverty.

During the field study qualitative research was performed, where the people that I worked with and the children in the orphanage were participating. Observation was also included in my field work. The result of the field study was very interesting. The most important findings from my results were that all of the people I spoke to said that they would like to see some changes at the orphanage. They came up with plenty of different ideas to make the environment better. I interviewed five employees at the orphanage and all of them said that they would like to extend the amount of employees, have better communication among themselves, therapy sessions - and more weekend activities for the children. During this period of the field study I interviewed a lot of children of different ages, but out of the interviews six where used in this report.

Abstract:
The Defining Town Centre Statistics Project was aimed at defining town centre boundaries for all towns falling within the M25, and producing economic and statistical data for each boundary. The purpose of such data is for governmental monitoring of local town centre economies and to assist with supporting unsustainable and failing centres. A methodology has been developed at CASA for constructing statistically based boundaries which uses core government datasets: the Annual Business Inquiry---supplied by the Office for National Statistics the Rating Support Application database for floorspace---supplied by the Valuation Office Executive and University College London and unit postcode locations for geo-referencing purposes - supplied by Ordnance Survey. The methodology itself uses kernel density estimation to smooth the postcode referenced town centre activity data which produces a surface---called the Index of Town Centredness---which is then thresholded to produce the town centre boundaries---called Areas of Town Centre Activity. This thesis explores the errors in the process. It provides detailed background to the core datasets, describing their origins and collation processes, and demonstrates how they are used to produce the town centre model. Further to this a broad overview of the model is given, with a section on each type of error---covering errors in the raw data, geo-referencing problems, statistics issues and necessary caveats required to allow the end-user of the statistics to fully realise the potential and flaws of the product. Specialist chapters are provided looking at a number of the main problems in the model. Unfortunately, due to confidentiality, detailed studies of the accuracy of the government datasets are not covered. Therefore, these concentrate on the difference between the model and the reality of town centres improving the geo-referencing by using AddressPoint and assessing the problems with the thresholding method. Finally, recommendations are made for Stage 3 of the model - the national roll-out.

Abstract:
This creative project has provided an example of a community participatory planning process in a small town setting. In this study the process specified by The Small Town Planning Handbook by Daniels, Keller And Lapping (1988) was compared to and supplemented by other contemporary small town and general planning literature. The specified process was designed to be a self help means for a small town to plan and subsequently compile an abbreviated town plan ("Miniplan"). The process was then applied to the Town of Lynn, Indiana as a case study. This study includes discussion and analysis of the study process as it occurred and resulted in several lessons learned. The most significant conclusion is that small towns cannot entirely plan on a self help basis. A visiting planner (eg. circuit rider or consultant) or a trained facilitator is necessary to guide the process. The resulting town planning study document (plan) is appended to this study for reference.
