Abstract:
Non-motorised transport (NMT) such as cycling and walking has multiple social, economic, environmental, climate and public health benefits and is integral to the agenda of sustainable development. There is considerable potential for more cycling mobility in South Africa, especially in low-income communities (LICs). Barriers to cycling mobility were investigated in Masiphumelele, a LIC in Cape Town, in order to inform recommendations for promoting cycling as a mode of transport in this community and beyond. A mixed methods design of qualitative and quantitative methods was used. A focus group discussion (FGD) with local bicycle shop customers informed the design of a cross-sectional cluster sampling questionnaire and a Best-Worst Scaling (BWS) stated choice survey of 100 household residents. The BWS survey used 10 choice sets of 4statements each to rank the relative importance to study participants of 20 potential barriers to cycling mobility on their average Best-Worse (B-W) scores.

Abstract:
In the last 20 years the craft brewing industry has expanded significantly in Scandinavia. The trend of microbreweries originates from the US and the U.K where much of the recent research has taken place, leaving a field unexplored from a perspective centralized to the microbrewery industry in Sweden. Previous research within similar fields have explored the use of neolocalism as a means of public relations strategy but little attention has been paid to further dimensions of strategic communication such as marketing communication and branding. With a theoretical framework varying from previous research within culture, geography and marketing this study seeks to bring light to the Swedish market of microbreweries from a media and communication perspective. The study examines which strategies Swedish microbreweries use to build a relationship with their customers and which strategies are implemented to appeal to new audiences. Furthermore, the study seeks to investigate which challenges microbreweries face with their external communication and what strategies are used to conquer them. The work indicates that while neolocalism plays a significant role in the branding and external communication for many breweries as demonstrated in previous studies in other areas of the world, the results bring light to the fact that while neolocalism might work as a strategy to bond with the locals it might also prevent the microbreweries to reach audiences beyond the given area. By using a qualitative semi-structured interview approach the respondents, each representing individual breweries located around Stockholm, Gothenburg and Småland, were able to provide empirical evidence suggesting that social media plays a great role in the success of reaching new audiences therefore functioning as one of the primary methods for successful strategic communication.

Khumalo, Funeka Nomasundu. "How to best serve the rural and small town middle class market in South Africa." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/24248.

Full text
Abstract:
This is an exploratory study with a purpose to gain an understanding of the middle class that is not situated in the cities in South Africa, whether this middle is served adequately in their areas. A population of middle class consumer who reside in the rural and small towns of South Africa and those who visit these areas was interviewed in in-depth face to face interviews. Expert interviews with retailers that they normally purchase from were also conducted. The study shows evidence of the middle class in the rural and small towns that goes out of their towns to source aspirational goods that are not available in their small towns. This class is aware of current styles and brands as they are exposed to media and they are influenced by those who live in the cities and also get exposure through their travels. It was also found that there is a number of the black middle class that currently resides in the cities however through their family ties in the rural and small town areas, they go back seasonally to be with their families and hence they expect to find the goods that they are accustomed to when they get there. The retailers had concerns with the size of the market in the rural and small towns, being small, however, this market does increase seasonally and models to serve a seasonal market are suggested. The research concludes that there is a middle class in the rural and small town areas of South Africa, this market grows seasonally and ways to service this market can be sought. Copyright

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study project deals with an investigation into the development for, and achievement of, project management best practices in the City of Cape Town. It is a fact that the average ratepayer expects to receive more and better services for less money. This will only be achieved if the organization can work more efficiently and provide more effective services to the communities. To be able to deliver these improved services at lower cost, the City of Cape Town needs to implement the Integrated Development Plan (lOP) and the programmes attached thereto through a project management approach; with the projects grouped within each program, in a matrix organization structure that will enable for the successful execution of projects that cut across multiple functions. A matrix organization can only be successful if everybody in the organization understands the concept and if functional managers are willing to share their resources and functional (subject) knowledge with project managers. The process to establish a project management methodology can be supported by a central project management office, headed by a professional project manager with sufficient authority within the organization. If the organization is serious about the successful execution of its lOP commitments and all its projects, then the central project management office will have to facilitate the development to project management maturity by being the focal point for the consistent application of project management processes and methodologies. The central project management office can support decentralized project management offices in the areas of activity, to ensure uniform standards and practices throughout the organization and to take responsibility for project management training in the organization. A project management best practices questionnaire was sent to people that deal with projects in the organization. The results indicated that there are many areas that require very urgent (immediately) and urgent training (within the foreseeable future) to be able to change the organization from a pure functional organization to a matrix organization. The custodian for this training must be the central project management office in the organization. This whole process needs to be implemented in a structured way with sufficient budget and resources provided for. Professional assistance needs to be sourced to ensure that the project management methodology is implemented correctly.

Ogborne, Jennifer Honora. ""Setting the best table in the country": Food and Labor at the Coloma Gold Mining Town." W&M ScholarWorks, 2013. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1539623626.

Full text
Abstract:
The town of Coloma, Montana was settled in the early 1890s as the home of several gold mining companies and their associated employees. Like so many boom towns, the residents had all but abandoned Coloma by 1916. This initial boom phase for Coloma transpired during a critical point in the emergence of modern capitalism, specifically in changing corporate managerial practices. A multi-company open town, Coloma lacked many of the typical characteristics of a paternalistic community, such as scrip and strictly segregated housing. Instead of outright domineering and controlling managerial practices, companies at Coloma manipulated and coerced their work forces through the control of the food provisioning system. This study demonstrates that companies at Coloma dominated the purchase, distribution, and consumption of food through the establishment of a centralized store and company-associated boardinghouses. Companies also offered meals as a type of labor mobilization feast to entice and retain labor populations. to explore the varying degrees of manipulation, this study employs the concept of the system of provision to organize a multi-scalar analysis that addresses the importation, distribution, preparation, and consumption of food products at Coloma. Through the lens of food distribution, this study examines archaeological materials and historical documents to show the extent to which Coloma's companies employed manipulative managerial practices.

Schenk, Jan-Christof. "New distinctions : the impact of class and race on the cultural preferences of youth in Cape Town and Belo Horizonte." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/15684.

Full text
Abstract:
Sociological treatments of the reproduction of social inequality in South Africa largely focus on its historical, political and economical aspects while references to popular culture are commonly used to describe differences, often in combination with racial discourse, rather than explain them. As a result much of South African cultural sociology, especially with regards to youth culture, is entailed in in-depth ethnographic descriptions of particular subcultures. Less common is scholarly work dealing with the role of taste and cultural preferences in the reconfiguration of common perceptions of 'otherness', both in class and race terms. This dissertation shifts the focus towards the structural aspects of popular culture and, particularly, youth culture. First, inspired by Bourdieu's work on distinction, it explores the segregating potential of contemporary youth culture in South Africa, especially where class and race con- notations meet. It then follows this thread of adapting Bourdieu's work to contemporary South African youth by identifying the media as a crucial factor alongside family and school for the preservation of racialised class characteristics. In a third step it takes the observations made in the South African context and compares them to youth culture in Brazil in order to establish the existence of common structures of difference that exist in different countries as a result of glocalization. The thesis established in this dissertation is that the cultural preferences of youth often come with class and race connotations. This interplay between class and race can be explained historic- ally as well as structurally through media consumption, which plays a significant role in the way young people learn to dress, speak, carry themselves and generally position themselves in relation to others. Due to global cultural flows these processes do not remain purely local phenomena but they find expression in localised forms as common structures of difference around the globe, thus structurally undermining local efforts to build a non-racial, non-classist society. These conclusions are based on primary research using a multi-method approach combining surveys on taste and racial attitudes with school-going youth in South Africa (Cape Town, n=1196) and Brazil (Belo Horizonte, n=860) with in-depth focus group interviews (only Cape Town). Using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis (survey data) combined with qualitative data analysis (interviews) it was possible to demonstrate that there are clear differences in the cultural and media preferences of South African youth along class and race lines, which are reflected, to a lesser extent, in the cultural and media preferences of Brazilian youth.

McDaid, Christopher L. "'The best accustomed house in town' : taverns as a reflection of elite consumer behavior in eighteenth-century Hampton and Elizabeth City County, Virginia." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/28147.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how two mid-eighteenth-century tavern keepers in Hampton chose to mirror the consumer behaviors of the local elite in the manner that food and beverages were prepared and served in their taverns. In order to understand the consumer behavior of Elizabeth City County’s elite, fifty-four probate inventories from the 1760s were analyzed. The analysis focused on the material culture associated with dining, cooking, the consumption of alcohol, and the serving of the warm caffeinated beverages, tea, coffee and chocolate. Documentary and archaeological data indicated that social elites had adopted complicated behaviors associated with dining, cooking, drinking alcohol and serving warm caffeinated beverages. The complexity of quotidian behaviors noted in the archaeological and documentary data are explained by multiple factors. The first factor is the world-view or habitus of the gentry elite of colonial Virginia that was based on the competition for respect based on social status. The second factor was the increasing availability of consumer goods in mid-eighteenth-century Virginia which meant that individuals of less wealth and social status could acquire items that had previously been available only to the wealthy. The third factor was the transition from a social practice that privileged the age of status items to one that judged the fashionabilty of items and behaviors. The level of variety and diversity identified in the homes of the elite was observed in the materials excavated from the two taverns.

The study area is located at the eastern-central portion of the Serid? Belt, on the interface between the Serid? Group Metasediments and the crystalline basement rocks of the Caic? Complex (RN). Petrographic and geochemical data allow us to define aspects related to the genesis and evolution of the Serra Verde Pluton magmas, which composes the goal of this dissertation The Serra Verde Pluton is a stock with outcropping area of about 25 km?, which is intrusive into metasedimentary sequence and the basement gneisses. The pluton intrusion is sintectonic to the Brasiliano event, elongated along the NE direction, developing a cornue geometry. The rock is a monzogranite mainly composed by K-feldspar, plagioclase and quartz, which usually compose more than 85% of the modal analisys. The main mafic mineral is the biotite, while amphibole, sphene, epidote, opaque minerals, allanite, zircon and apatite occur as accessory minerals. It features still a latemagmatic paragenesis composed by chlorite, granular epidote, carbonates and muscovite, developed through the percolation of late CO2 and H2O rich fluids. Chemically, the Serra Verde Pluton rocks may be classified as metaluminous, of calc-alkaline affiliation, sometimes showing trondhjem?tic characteristics, with high Na2O (>4,5%), Sr (>400ppm) and Ba (>800ppm) and low K2O (≤3,0%), MgO (<1,0%), TiO2 (<0,5%), Rb (<90ppm), Y (≤16ppm) and Zr (≤13ppm). Micropetrographic evidences (mineral assembly and microtextures) indicate that the magma evolution occurred in moderated to high fO2 conditions, above the FMQ buffer. Thermo-barometric data obtained by minor elements geochemistry and the CIPW data, suggest a final/minimal pressure crystallization for the Serra Verde Pluton samples of about 3 to 5 kbar, liquidus temperature around 800o C, solidus temperature between 680o and 660o C. This data is compatible with those observed by many authors for the Neoproterozoic granites of the Serid? Belt. The group of analyzed data (Petrographic, microtextural and geochemical), suggests that the dominant process of the generation and evolution of the Serra Verde Granite magma was the fractional crystallization, probably from basement quartz-dioritic and tonalitic orthogneisses source

The increase in overweight and obesity worldwide is described as a global health epidemic. A great proportion of this epidemic is now found in low- and middle-income countries with higher levels of prevalence, particularly in emerging economies. In sub-Saharan Africa, South Africa ranks high in the prevalence of obesity at all levels. Since the inception of democracy in 1994, the government is yet to overcome the burden of poverty and inequality routed in its apartheid past. Apartheid systematically and unjustly disintegrated and segregated black Africans and people of Colour, denying them access to economic opportunity, thus leaving them on a dependency status. Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain are the relics of apartheid policies. Obesity and associated diseases are highly correlated with gender dynamics, economic conditions, nutritional status, poverty, and urbanisation. It is increasingly evident that poor urban dwellers, especially women and children are at risk of obesity-related factors such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart diseases. The increasing incidence of obesity especially amongst children is concerning. The prevalence of child poverty is in South Africa is a cause for concern. Over 18.5million children are in South Africa, 64% of which are dependent on CSG. With poverty and inequality affecting millions of households, access to food and quality food has reached crises level. Yet, it is a basic human right that has received little empirical response amongst policymaker in South Africa. The South African food system is complex, poverty is endemic and poor households are most vulnerable to unhealthy eating habits. This research critically analysis the link between food choices, overweight and obesity in adults and children living in urban peripheral communities in Cape Town. The study was designed to interrogate the kinds of food eaten by urban peripheral dwellers, their socioeconomic status and how the policy of the BIC addresses the problem of child obesity in South Africa. This research aimed to empirically explore the relationship between BMI and food choices of adults and children living in urban peripheries in Cape Town. The study also aimed at evaluating the BIC in urban townships in Cape Town in the context of child obesity, to understand the views of the children and to understand how poor households are ensuring the BIC in relation food access, food availability and child protection from obesity. The study further aimed at comparing the and contrasting the socioeconomic dynamics of the two population to understand the progress and gaps in their economic and health status. Empirical data were collected from households in Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain using a two-stage sampling technic to identify clusters and households. A sample of about 4300 individuals in 1052 households was sampled. A 24H dietary recall was used to capture food types of the population. The World Health Organisation guidelines for BMI adults and children were applied through the study. A BIC Index was developed to assess the right to food from the views of the child. First, the study found significant differences in the socioeconomic and demographic profiles of the population. Poverty and the risk of falling into poverty were higher in Khayelitsha than in Mitchells Plain. Two-third of the population (65%) of adults we found to be overweight and obese. Overweight and obesity amongst children was 29% and 68% of children reported that they buy food at school or on their way to school. Over 83% children stated that their parents give them money to take to school. There was a significant association between children buying food and parents giving money at X2 91.4643, P<= 0.000. The purpose of this study is to analyse how the process of metropolization of Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, fell upon the cotidianity and ways of life of the population of Ribeirão das Neves, a municipality of the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte (MRBH). It tries to give special prominence to those who, in a certain way, opted to live outside the turbulent movement of the city in question and discusses a philanthropic project entitled Town of the Boys Saint Vincent of Paola ( Cidade dos Meninos São Vicente de Paula ), which we will refer to, in this study, as Town of the Boys (TOTB/CDM), as it is known by the local community. The relation metropolis/urban periphery is described in this research from the observation of the uses and of the impossibilities pointed out by the philanthropic ideals, which are sustained by the discourse of preservation of the christian moral and of the maintenance of order. People are seduced by the idea of living far away from the urban problems and conflicts. They seek alternatives for this dilemma, putting the biggest distance possible between themselves and the areas commonly considered dangerous or risky. They choose to withdraw from more intense personal relations and sometimes shut themselves in ghettoes or groups as such. The Town of the Boys points to ways that try to give answers to the urban conflicts in the municipality where it was constructed. One of the solutions for not living the negative aspects found in Ribeirão das Neves is to invite hundreds of young people to experiment the boarding school regime. In this way, apparently, the materially deprived youth would stay far away from the drugs (and from the family), from sex (and from parties), from vandalism (and from public spaces), from violence (and from individual autonomy), from economical precariousness (and from the natural dynamics of the municipality). These are choices which give indications that the urban phenomenon fragments itself and that the cities utopia loses importance. There is no place for everybody in the urban dynamics. The full living of the city gives place to the seduction of the walls that protect and mask part of the reality. This research tries to perceive and explain that in this relation of the metropolis of Minas Gerais with its metropolitan region, a philanthropic institution gains prominence for its proposals, which are presented to hundreds of young people, about how to succeed in life through the preparation for the work market. The young and not qualified labor force which makes constant use of the metropolis feels proud and esteemed with such incentive. Lives are transformed, dreams are stimulated, a new world announces itself. The institution Town of the Boys , paradoxically, legitimates the power of the private initiatives of assistance and shows that the discourse of discipline, moral and obedience seduces and brings with itself the idea of the absence of the State as an instrument that regulates order. The preparation for the work appears as a form of domination and of capture of the dreams of those who live in the periphery in the capital of Minas Gerais. Such dreams many times become real, possible.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with value of an immovable cultural monument with different purposes of use. With help of analysis of the highest and the best use of property (HABU) are individual suggestions of use of the object examined. The theoretical part defines basic concepts, indivual methods of appraisement and explains analysis HABU. The first half of the practical part is about acquaintance with territory solution and property and the second part is about HABU method application. The aim of the work is based on analysis’ results that defines what use is the most appropriate. Value comparison of property with current purpose of use and property that appears as the best shows what effect has the change of purpose of use on property’s value.

This study is to use photolithography process to produce micro pump structure, to use PDMS to package peristaltic pump, and to use piezoelectric buzz as actuator. Simple theoretical analysis and CFD analysis are performed and compared with experimental measurement. In addition, the working phase, the number of chamber, the width of flow channel, the length of flow channel, and diffuser angle are investigated to explore their effects on the volume flow rate. The results indicate that in a two-chamber peristaltic micropump, the three phase -1 has higher volume flow rate than the three-phase -2. For three-chamber micropump, the volume flow rate of the four-phase case is the highest, that of the six-phase case is the second, and that of the three-phase case is the least. The results also reveal that the number of chamber has no clear effect on the volume flow rate of the peristaltic micropump. The volume flow rate is increased as the increasing of the width of the flow channel, while the variation of the length of the flow channel could not affect the volume flow rate. Finally, increasing the diffuser angle could result in higher volume flow rate, and it is recommended in the peristaltic micropump.
