Abstract:
This thesis is an architectural investigation of a house as a rational object imbued by memory. The place is a wooded hill on the border between a hundred acre farm and the marshy ravine of the Totopotomoy "Totomoy" Creek in Mechanicsville, Virginia. The farm dates back to the Civil War when the Totomoy was no man's land between Union and Confederate earth works. It has been farmed by my grandfather since the late 1940s. The house is a pair of rectangles separated by a stair. The concrete block walls are punctured by large windows, aligned to define interior passage and establishing clarity of spatial and formal relationships. The tower house is the reduction and rational manifestation of familial memory.

Abstract:
This set of drawings, paintings, and photographs explores the realms of knowledge and experience in architecture through analytical and perceptual means. In other words, how physical, material considerations inform the experience of moving through space, the perception of space, and the memory of place. These themes and questions are considered through the design of an observation tower that punctuates the ambiguous joint between land and water, earth and sky on the southwestern most point on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK.

Abstract:
Today, many small aerodromes have a hard time surviving economically, and amongst the largest cost is air traffic control. Airlines are cutting costs where they can, and many times this affects the aerodromes as well, e.g. when airlines decide to park remotely instead of at the gate. The project called Remotely Operated Towers, initiated by SESAR and run by Saab and LFV, is aiming to address this problem. The project revolves around remotely providing ATS to aerodromes where it is deemed suitable. A big challenge in this project is how to assign aerodromes to remote tower modules in the remote control centre. There are many ways to do this, but there is only a few ways to do it to achieve the least amount of modules. This thesis aims to find an optimal solution to the challenge mentioned above. The thesis resulted in a model where the user can provide the input of choice, i.e. aerodromes with associated ATS operating hours and movements, for a specific period – and receive the assignment schedule for the modules, saying exactly which aerodrome are to be controlled by which module at what time.

Casey, John D. "Tower at Eisenhower Avenue." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77738.

Full text
Abstract:
The Eisenhower Avenue Valley site is unique in the Washington Area for its highrise development potential. It offers access to the Metro line, the beltway and Old Town Alexandria. Its zoning diversity will accommodate light Industrial, commercial and residential construction. The question of whether or not to build a tower in proximity to the temple is an architectural and a political question. The assumption of this project is that the Eisenhower Avenue Valley will have high rise development. This design has recognized the significance of the Eisenhower Avenue Valley site and its zoning. It identifies the specific aspects of the site, such as the proximity of the Metro Line, the beltway, Old Town and the Potomac River. Within this context, the project defines the user of the metro by finding an architectural meaning within the planning issues discussed above. As the grid-lock of the beltway grows and becomes more congested, the Metro Line will flourish. The Metro line, when used to its greatest potential, will soon replace the street grid and city block as an urban organizational element. A city's character is drawn from this urban element. This project responds to this element by defining the individual within such a context. Retail commercial and residential space exist with respect to the Metro Line, not in competition with, or in ignorance of it. A perpendicular axis emerges from the Metro Line. Ordered around this axis are residential, commercial and retail spaces that exploit their specific site advantages. The accomplishment of this project has been in understanding and developing an architectural solution to these planning Issues and questions for the individual who will live, work and shop in this environment. I would like to acknowledge the help of several individuals. Ed Rahame's carpentry expertise and· advice helped me through the oral defense of my thesis. Tim Mount's photographic ability and patience were greatly appreciated. Don Casey provided intimate knowledge of the Eisenhower Avenue Valley and the public policy applied to it. Abstract:
This thesis presents a method of tracking and correcting for the swaying of a central receiver tower in concentrated solar production plants. The method uses a camera with image processing algorithms to detect movement of the center of the tower. A prototype was constructed utilizing a CMOS camera connected to a microcontroller to control the movements of three surrounding heliostats. The prototype uses blob-tracking algorithms to detect and correct for movements of a colored model target. The model was able to detect movements in the tower with average error of 0.32 degrees, and was able to correctly orient the surrounding heliostats to within 1.2 and 2.6 degrees of accuracy while testing indoors and outdoors, respectively.

Androulidaki, Amalia. "The meaning of the architectural form of the tower : the ancient towers of Siphnos." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/26122.

Full text
Abstract:
The phenomenon of building numerous towers in Siphnos and also in other Hellenic regions in antiquity (sixth to fourth century BC) has been studied only relatively recently by scholars. Their number, the quality of the cture, and the constant typology of these towers, contest the suggested theories about their original purpose. In this study, the analysis of the towers addresses not just the structure of the building but also the ning that has been attributed to the space and the form. This research is an attempt to detect the architectural ities that render the tower capable of corresponding to specific requirements and to fulfilling the intentions their creators. The analysis of the meaning and the intentions which prompted the selection of the particular architectural eidos, is derived from the perceptions and beliefs of that era in terms of its social, religious, philosophical and technological contexts. The results of the phenomenological analysis have been confirmed further supported from by historical, religious and anthropological research. The research proposes that the towers of Siphnos have had a multivalent connection with the mines ch can be interpreted as sacred and functional. The vegetation and generation of metals, ores and minerals considered as a certain fact in antiquity. The regeneration of all creatures presupposed the ceremonial repetition of the sacred coitus of the primordial couple in the ritual known as "hieros gamos". The tower is the ptor, the intermediary vehicle in the performance of this holy marriage, attracting thunderbolts that constitute the sign of this union. Also, the towers define and demarcate the metallurgical region and shape the geographical networks in accordance with the entries of the galleries, in order to construct their specific ntated directions. The capability of the towers in attracting lightning, has served positively the safety of the e workers and mines. The fact that all the towers stand on surface metalliferous veins, as was expected, rding to renaissance texts, answers the unsolved problem of the placing of the towers around the island and firms the verification of the proposed theory.

Kramer, Anna Marie. "The Power of the Tower: Contesting History at Bear Lodge/Devils Tower National Monument." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2016. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/pomona_theses/151.

Full text
Abstract:
Bear Lodge/Devils Tower National Monument, a spectacular rock formation in northeastern Wyoming, has a multiplicity of meanings, not all of which were fully acknowledged until the 1990s. It is widely known as a geologic wonder, the first national monument, a marker of local and pioneer heritage, and a premier rock climbing area. In the 1980s and ‘90s, however, the National Park Service began to acknowledge that the Tower also holds cultural and historical meaning for the Northern Plains tribes, dating back long before the colonization of the American West. Some of the tribes expressed to the Park Service that they were offended by rock climbers desecrating the Tower, a sacred site, leading the Park Service to seek to compromise between these competing uses of this public land. The controversy over climbing at Bear Lodge/Devils Tower was, and remains, a debate over history, and this thesis examines the historical foundations for the discourses of climbers, local white residents, tribal members, and the Park Service, as these various groups asserted their claims to this public space. This thesis contends that the language used by climbers and local white residents in arguing against the Park Service’s accommodation of tribal cultures and beliefs appropriated the languages of spirituality and tradition used by the tribes, and sought to delegitimize the tribal claims to the Tower. The Park Service is complicit in controlling the discourses surrounding the Tower and erasing the traditions and complex history of the Northern Plains tribal ties to this sacred place.

Abstract:
Saab has a product, Remote Tower, which allows air traffic controllers to supervise and control an airport remotely. Today an air traffic controller can operate on one airport at the time and switch between airports. The next phase of this system is to allow the air traffic controller to simultaneously control multiple airports, i.e. going from controlling airports in sequence to controlling airports in parallel. The airports are connected to and controlled from one single airport control center. This leads to a planning problem, both in long term and short term, for staffing this airport control center to maintain the capacity of the connected airports. This thesis will present the process of the development of a tool allowing a user to plan the schedule the staffing of a remote tower center. By utilizing this tool the impact of different restrictions affecting the planning will be evaluated and presented in the results.

Abstract:
Timber Tower: 10 20 30 offers a conceptual structural system for tall wooden buildings. The thesis has been a noumenal design process into the subject of timber towers, where the conceptual system is designed to work in accordance with engineering concepts for tall buildings. The system uses mass timber as the primary structural material supported by embedded steel plates. The introduced system plays to the strength and weaknesses of both corresponding materials. Mass timber is used as the primary material that is designed to take care of the dead & live loads, while steel is used as a secondary material to give additional support to the vertical loads. The structural system is interpolated to three different height categories; 10, 20 & 30. The timber & steel system is designed to be prefabricated in parts and assembled on site. Other considerations also addressed in the thesis has been fire-, weather- and soundproofing of the structure.

Johnson, Linda Carole. "Planning gain in Tower Hamlets." Thesis, Brunel University, 1988. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5767.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines in detail the operation of a planning gain policy in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets between 1971 and 1983, using data obtained from records held at the Borough and observations of the practice. The practice of planning gain is set into the broader context of planning and the still broader social and political context. The existing literature and definitions of planning gain are critically examined in the light of a theoretical framework which concerns itself with the identification of power and politics within the planning process. The responses made to the practice of planning gain by the Department of the Environment, planning inspectors and the courts are explained and critically analysed to indicate the lack of articulated opposition. The use of planning agreements as a mechanism for the enforcement of planning gain is also examined. Section 52 of the Town and Country Planning Act is analysed, together with the available case law. The use of these agreements in Tower Hamlets is discussed in detail. The schemes examined at Tower Hamlets are presented in full to provide an overall view of the operation of a planning gain policy. Details include the effect of negotiation on the content of schemes and problems of implementation. Comparative material is provided covering the operation of a planning gain system which has legislative recognition in Sydney, Australia. This part of the thesis is used to illustrate the continued existence of negotiation for planning gain and of the restrictive responses to the autonomy of local government.

This dissertation is a comparative examination firstly of usage of, and contribution to, the Wikipedias in ten of South Africa’s eleven official languages, and secondly of possible measures to address the situation discovered in the first investigative stage. The historical context is reviewed and it is argued that the number of official languages (and therefore Wikipedias) results from decisions made in colonial and apartheid eras. Public-domain usage and contribution statistics from the Wikimedia Foundation are analysed, revealing poor growth in most cases; possible interventions via both cultural/educational strategies and technological options are reviewed.

Abstract:
Today, tower cranes are in widespread use on construction sites all around the world. An important issue that arises when operating these cranes is the oscillatory behavior that occurs during payload transportation, which can have severe effects on safety as well as accuracy of payload delivery. Due to the nonlinear nature of the rotating crane motion, controlling these oscillations is a complex task. Additionally, the lack of sensors on many cranes that are in use today requires extra effort to design effective control strategies. While current research has made good progress on the subject of tower crane control, less attention has been given to the practical implications of applying these control methods to industrial tower cranes. This thesis provides a comparison of some of the best possible tower crane control strategies that can be achieved using modern control concepts. A performance analysis as well as a more practical comparison through a real-time tower crane simulator will give a deeper insight into the theoretical and practical limitations of these methods.

Iwatsubo, Tomoko. "Constructing the tower : Yeats as architect." Thesis, University of York, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/13443/.

Full text
Abstract:
W.B. Yeats’s tower, the most “visible” symbol in his work, is a product of his concerted labour over more than a decade. It marks a crucial phase of Yeats’s poetic career in the wake of Responsibilities and the Easter Rising. The Rebellion and its repercussions both public and private acted as a catalyst for the inception of his “tower project” in the period of dramatic personal and national transformation. This study focuses around the genesis and gradual elaboration of Yeats’s tower, the sheer work that went into its creation as well as the repeated pattern of interaction between Yeats’s agency and contingency in his poetic construction in the period leading up to The Tower and beyond. This biography of Yeats’s tower traces the development of the architectural dimension of Yeats’s later poetry, setting it against the poet’s parallel reconstruction of the particular building, Thoor Ballylee. The thesis illuminates the ways in which Yeats’s tower poetry evolved into his major poetic project, a landmark and cornerstone of his later work, with its grand scope gradually unfolding even to the poet himself. Combining the poet’s biography with genetic analyses of all the tower-related poems from The Wild Swans at Coole (1919) to The Winding Stair and Other Poems (1933), including explorations of materials which have hitherto tended to be overlooked on this supposedly well-trodden ground, the thesis casts an unfamiliar light on the tower, one of the most familiar landmarks of modern poetry, and highlights its chronologically changing picture—moving “[m]inute by minute,” as it were, shadowed by Irish conflicts. The thesis also demonstrates how closely interwoven different kinds of “building”—literal, textual, political and symbolic—were in Yeats’s life and work during the turbulent and transformative years following the birth of “terrible beauty.”

Samuel, Mark Wycliffe. "The Tower houses of West Cork." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1998. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317856/.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a study of the local development of Irish Tower houses in West Cork that were built between c.1400-1650; these buildings were mostly built by Gaelic clans or Hibernicised Norman families. The study is based on fieldwork and published historical research. A corpus of individual tower house reports provide the raw data. The purpose has been to date these structures by reconstructing the development of their layout. The internal layout of these features is analysed in terms of function; apparent role changes indicated by these are related to changes in Gaelic society known from text-based research. Where possible, inferences are made from the layout of the regional tower houses to better understand the role they played in Gaelic society. The western part of the Survey region has an exceptionally high concentration of fifteenth-century tower houses. These 'raised entrance' tower houses are argued to be an archaic form directly inspired by relic Anglo-Norman hall houses; another ancestral form in the east part of the Survey region is the 'refuge tower'. The role of the tower house and its associated settlements in post-medieval seigneurial settlement and Gaelic/planter interaction is discussed. Sophisticated construction technology, including the systematic use of ratios and units, has to be considered against perceived notions of Gaelic society. The relationship of tower house construction to a wave of Friary construction in the Fifteenth Century is considered; it is argued that an undocumented fifteenth-century economic boom and population expansion in the Gaelic regions was connected with a need for the elite to define land holdings; the latter was an important departure from traditional Gaelic social organisation. The importance of 'castle studies' as a major tool of Irish archaeology is emphasised and possible inter-disciplinary avenues for further research are suggested.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScIng)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates energy generation by large-scale solar tower power plants. The performance characteristics of a so-called reference plant with a 4000 m diameter glass collector roof and a 1500 m high, 160 m diameter tower are determined for a site located in South Africa. The relevant draught and conservation equations are derived, discretized and implemented in a numerical model which solves the equations using speci ed meteorological input data and determines the power delivered by the plant. The power output of a solar tower power plant over a twenty-four hour period is presented. Corresponding temperature distributions in the ground under the collector are shown. Variations in seasonal generation are evaluated and the total annual electrical output is determined. The dependency of the power output on collector diameter and tower height is illustrated, while showing that greater power production can be facilitated by optimizing the roof shape and height. The minor in uence of the tower shadow falling across the collector is evaluated, while the e ect of prevailing winds on the power generated is found to be signi cant.

Full text
Abstract:
This report aims to present a method for generating levels for tower defense games. Tower defense games are digital strategy games played by defending bases against oncoming enemies that travel along pregenerated paths. The intended way of generating levels was to use Wave Function Collapse and Bézier curves to create paths and then generate a terrain mesh to match the paths using Marching Cubes. This approach was abandoned because it was considered unnecessarily complicated and there was a concern that there would not be enough time to complete a level generation system. The abandoned system was replaced by a system where a terrain mesh is generated first and is then used as the base for generating the paths iteratively where the direction of the path is changing based on a number of different rules. The path generation system was completed with a simple algorithm to decide on the number of enemies and defense towers. The result is a simple tower defense game with a complete but unbalanced system for generating levels. Though the system is unbalanced, it is implemented in a way that allows for balancing to be made. While a change in direction from the original idea was considered necessary, it only means that that approach was too time-consuming for this project, not that the techniques used in the original idea are inappropriate for these purposes.

Omar, Hanafy M. "Control of Gantry and Tower Cranes." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26044.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this work is to design robust, fast, and practical controllers for gantry and tower cranes. The controllers are designed to transfer the load from point to point as fast as possible and, at the same time, the load swing is kept small during the transfer process and completely vanishes at the load destination. Moreover, variations of the system parameters, such as the cable length and the load weight, are also included. Practical considerations, such as the control action power, and the maximum acceleration and velocity, are taken into account. In addition, friction effects are included in the design using a friction-compensation technique. The designed controllers are based on two approaches. In the first approach, a gain-scheduling feedback controller is designed to move the load from point to point within one oscillation cycle without inducing large swings. The settling time of the system is taken to be equal to the period of oscillation of the load. This criterion enables calculation of the controller feedback gains for varying load weight and cable length. The position references for this controller are step functions. Moreover, the position and swing controllers are treated in a unified way. In the second approach, the transfer process and the swing control are separated in the controller design. This approach requires designing two controllers independently: an anti-swing controller and a tracking controller. The objective of the anti-swing controller is to reduce the load swing. The tracking controller is responsible for making the trolley follow a reference position trajectory. We use a PD-controller for tracking, while the anti-swing controller is designed using three different methods: (a) a classical PD controller, (b) two controllers based on a delayed-feedback technique, and (c) a fuzzy logic controller that maps the delayed-feedback controller performance. To validate the designed controllers, an experimental setup was built. Although the designed controllers work perfectly in the computer simulations, the experimental results are unacceptable due to the high friction in the system. This friction deteriorates the system response by introducing time delay, high steady-state error in the trolley and tower positions, and high residual load swings. To overcome friction in the tower-crane model, we estimate the friction, then we apply an opposite control action to cancel it. To estimate the friction force, we assume a mathematical model and estimate the model coefficients using an off-line identification technique using the method of least squares. With friction compensation, the experimental results are in good agreement with the computer simulations. The gain-scheduling controllers transfer the load smoothly without inducing an overshoot in the trolley position. Moreover, the load can be transferred in a time near to the optimal time with small swing angles during the transfer process. With full-state feedback, the crane can reach any position in the working environment without exceeding the system power capability by controlling the forward gain in the feedback loop. For large distances, we have to decrease this gain, which in turn slows the transfer process. Therefore, this approach is more suitable for short distances. The tracking-anti-swing control approach is usually associated with overshoots in the translational and rotational motions. These overshoots increase with an increase in the maximum acceleration of the trajectories . The transfer time is longer than that obtained with the first approach. However, the crane can follow any trajectory, which makes the controller cope with obstacles in the working environment. Also, we do not need to recalculate the feedback gains for each transfer distance as in the gain-scheduling feedback controller.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The meteorological conditions at Eskom’s Majuba Power Station are measured, evaluated and trended in this dissertation. The results are used to evaluate the current natural draught wet-cooling tower (NDWCT) design- and performance test specifications and to compare these to the original design- and performance test specifications. The evaluation reveals that the design parameters for the NDWCTs at Majuba Power Station, a cooling system that was originally designed optimally, could have been determined differently and arguably more accurately by using the wet-bulb temperature (Tawb) as the main design variable instead of the dry-bulb temperature (Ta). A new technique to determine optimal NDWCT design and performance test conditions is consequently proposed. In order to satisfy the atmospheric conditions required for a successful NDWCT performance test, it is also proposed that the tests be undertaken between 12:00 and 14:00 during Summer. It is found that the NDWCT inlet Tawb, measured at specific heights, does not compare well to the far-field Tawb measured at the same heights when a Tawb accuracy of 0.1 K is required. It is proposed that a more representative far-field Tawb measuring height of 10 m should be used in future NDWCT designs as the NDWCT design temperature reference height. The industry-standard reference height should, however, still be used during temperature profile calculations. A parametric study of the water-steam cycle and wet-cooling system at Majuba indicates that during full load conditions, the generated output (Pst) is primarily dependent on the condenser saturation pressure (pc). The latter is reliant on Tawb, the temperature lapse rate (LRT) that is represented by the temperature profile exponent (bT), the main cooling water flow rate (mcw), atmospheric pressure (pa), and wind speed (VW). Using historical plant data relatively simple methods, enabling the quick and effective determination of these relationships, are proposed. The plant-specific and atmospheric parameters required for these analyses are also tabulated. Two NDWCT effectiveness models, one mathematical (Kröger, 1998) and one statistical artificial neural network (ANN) model are presented and evaluated. ANNs, which are not often used to evaluate NDWCT effectiveness, provide accurate NDWCT temperature approach results within 0.5 K of measured values for varying dependent variables. This motivates that an ANN, if set up and used correctly, can be an effective condition-monitoring tool and can be used to improve the accuracy of more empirical NDWCT performance models. The one-dimensional mathematical effectiveness model provides accurate results under NDWCT design conditions. The dependency of Majuba’s NDWCT to the rain zone mean drop diameter (dd) is evaluated by means of the one-dimensional mathematical model. A reduction in dd from 0.0052 m to 0.0029 m can reduce the NDWCT re-cooled water temperature (Tcwo) so that the rated pc is reduced by 0.15 kPa, which relates to a combined financial saving during peak and off-peak periods of R1.576M in 2013 and R1.851M in 2016. Similar improvements can result in higher savings at other wet-cooled stations in the Eskom fleet due to less optimally-designed wet-cooling systems. The proposed techniques should be considered in future economic evaluations of wet-cooling system improvements at different power stations.

Full text
Abstract:
The performance of steady-state tower shadow models for a wind turbine truss tower have been evaluated. The Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach, in conjunction with the $k-omega$ Shear-Stress-Transport (SST) model, was used to simulate transient flows past cross sections of a truss tower. The objective was to compare numerical results with Powles', Blevins' and Schlichting's tower shadow models and evaluate their performance on a multimember structure. Parameters for each model have been estimated. It will be shown that the RANS model was able to reproduce realistic results when used in transient simulations on high Reynolds number flows (supercritical regime). The importance of considering unsteady motion when calculating the turbulence intensity, using RANS with transient simulations, will be explained. The multimember extension used for the tower shadow models reproduces the mean velocity profiles quite well, and by using a suitable estimation method, global parameters were found for all models. Additionally, turbulent inflow has been implemented with a user-defined function in Fluent. The results have been evaluated, and show that such such sophisticated inflow modeling is not necessary to predict realistic mean velocity profiles.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses British art of the late 1950s and 1960s, and specifically traces how formalist aesthetics and broader cultural factors influenced abstract art being made at this time. As such it is concerned with defining how particular artworks, while not depicting the environment in which they were produced, can still be demonstrated to embody it through other means. Opposing a binary separation of pop figuration and formalist abstraction prevalent in other scholarship dealing with the period, this text instead outlines a scenario where formalist strategies of art-making were themselves ideologically predicated on a number of other societal factors. These factors include the semantic economy underpinning the field of branded advertisement, the increasingly afunctional appearance of industrially styled commodities, and an image of ‘classless’ professionalism cultivated to combat an existing political Establishment. Additionally, this study includes an examination of the influence exerted on British abstraction by American sources, and revisits the critic Norbert Lynton’s observation regarding the ‘Mid-Atlantic’ position many practitioners found themselves occupying stylistically. At the heart of such an enquiry is an attempt to account in concrete terms for characteristics differentiating British artwork from that being produced elsewhere. It is structured as three chapters, looking at the work of Richard Smith at a time during which he was resident in both London and New York, that of a number of sculptors who participated in the Whitechapel Art Gallery exhibition New Generation 1965, and the development of Jeremy Moon’s painting practice. Brought together these three case studies combine to suggest an autonomous and vital sensibility, one quite distinct from developments being made either in Continental Europe or the United States.

Stout, Malcolm Russell Jr. "Cooling Tower Fan Control for Energy Efficiency." NCSU, 2003. http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/theses/available/etd-05082003-122724/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis evaluates the economics of alternative cooling tower capacity control methods. Annual fan electrical energy requirements are calculated for towers with single-speed, two-speed, and variable-speed fans. Fan energy requirements are determined for counter-flow and cross-flow towers designed for low initial cost and for energy efficiency. Effectiveness-NTU equations are solved to predict cooling tower performance at various fan speeds. Natural convection, which determines the cooling capacity when the fan is off, is accounted for using a mean enthalpy difference. Ambient conditions are simulated using typical meteorological year data for five locations. The results show that potential savings are not strongly dependent on the approach temperature, but do increase with increasing range in colder climates. The potential for saving is greatest for cooling towers designed for low initial cost, and is generally higher in locations where the wet-bulb temperature remains relatively constant throughout the year. Two-speed fans that can operate at half speed are generally more suitable for low-cost cooling towers. Two-speed fans that can operate at two-third speed are better for towers designed for energy efficiency and are generally better when the range exceeds 10 F.

Murphy, Ailbhe. "Tower songs : Critical coordinates for collaborative practice." Thesis, Ulster University, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.537601.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis has explored the possibilities within collaborative arts practice for creating an interdisciplinary form of evaluation to address the centrality and complexity of negotiation in collaborative practice. The navigational challenges for artists negotiating this field were considered in light of the critical debates within socially engaged arts practice (Kester, 2004 and 2005; Kwon 2002: Bishop, 2009, Lind 2004 and Doherty 2008) which tend to organise the field along a series of binary oppositions such as: process v product; aesthetics v ethics; participative v collaborative practice and intersubjectivity v autonomy. The cross-city collaborative project I initiated in Dublin called Tower Songs served as the vehicle for a practice-based investigation of my research questions. Tower Songs was concerned with the dynamics of a changing city amplified in the demise of public housing (flat complex) estates across Dublin. The thesis introduced a theoretical frame drawn from feminist and post colonial theory (Rodríguez 2006) in order to examine a series of reflective processes which sought to make sense of the first two years work of Tower Songs. From there an interdisciplinary turn in practice was described where questions of epistemology and knowledge production from within the social sciences encounter those negotiated practices and critical references from socially engaged arts practice. The question of evaluation of collaborative projects was tested from the point of view of this expanding theoretical register by Vagabond Reviews through the review of a large scale community-based street spectacle called the Night of the Dark Angel. That interdisciplinary practice was examined in relation to a post structuralist critique which drew on arguments for the destabilising of voice in qualitative inquiry (Lather, 2009 and 2004; Mazzei, 2009; Mazzei and Jackson, 2009 and Jackson, 2009) The post structuralist critique of voice was explored as a move away from the binary oppositions of art critical debates and the pre-determined linguistic arenas of formal evaluation frameworks in favour of a transversal reading of the collaborative experience.

By 2012, the fate of Paul Rudolph's tower in downtown Boston has been in question for years while a vision of a denser city calls for its demolition. Projected development on the site currently argues that to move forward, the existing building must be erased entirely. While progressive at the time of its construction, the outscaled tower is now perceived as obsolete and thus disposable. This brutalist work is representative of a class of buildings in crisis; architects and preservationists must decide quickly how to handle the sometimes fraught histories of the still massive urban infrastructures that are widely being excised from the urban landscape. This thesis questions how to balance the desire for some physical persistance of brutalist architectural ideals with the progressive spirit that marks the architectures of both past and present. The project proposes an aggressive, partial preservation of the Rudolph building that uses the original architecture as a basis for iteration. Investigation of the embedded tensions in preservation practice between the preserved and the intervention reveals space for preservation operations that translate architectures, holding more potential for projection than tactics of simple monumentalization or juxtaposition.

Brown, Elizabeth Ann. "Rhyolite Petrogenesis at Tower Mountain Caldera, OR." PDXScholar, 2017. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/3997.

Full text
Abstract:
Tower Mountain Caldera is the main feature of an Oligocene volcanic field located in the Umatilla National Forest, eastern Oregon. It is perfectly suited to investigate models of rhyolite petrogenesis as all of the important rock components for evaluating generation models are present in a single location and thus are presumably related; basalts, intermediate igneous rocks (which consist of older plutons and younger volcanic rocks, which are ~coeval with rhyolites), metamorphic basement rocks of significant grade, and rhyolites of varying composition. The formation of the caldera produced the Dale Tuff, which comprises the intra-caldera and outflow facies. 40Ar/39Ar dating places the age of the tuff at 32.66 ± 0.36 Ma. Post-caldera rhyolites erupted along apparent ring fractures and elsewhere. Radiometric U-Pb dating of zircons from three of these rhyolites yielded ages of 32.167 ± 0.020 Ma (#CH07a), 31.798 ± 0.012 Ma (#TM5), and 31.426 ± 0.016 Ma (#CH08a). All rhyolites at Tower Mountain range from low to high silica varieties. Some of the post-caldera rhyolites are chemically similar to the Dale Tuff, such as sample CH07a, and have compositions typical of rhyolites of calc-alkaline volcanic centers (I-type rhyolites), while others are similar to A-type rhyolites (CH08a and TM5). The ages indicate that the calc-alkaline rhyolites were followed by the A-type rhyolites. The petrogenetic relationships between the various rocks types were evaluated. Partial melt modeling based on experimental melts produced from crustal material indicates that batch partial melting of metamorphosed high silica crustal material modified by the addition of more primitive mafic material by assimilation/contamination is the most likely source for the Tower Mountain rhyolites.

Jackets are the most common structures in the Adriatic Sea for extracting natural gas. These structural typologies are suitable for relative low water depth (around 250m) and flat sandy sea floors. Most of them have been built in the last 50 years. When the underground source finishes, these structures should be moved to another location or removed if they reached their design life. Nevertheless, another solution might be considered: change the future working life of these platforms by involving renewable energy and transforming them into offshore wind towers. The present research proposal aims to investigate the possibility of converting actual structures for gas extraction to offshore platforms for wind turbine towers.

Abstract:
In my previous bachelor's thesis I studied an algorithm for the improvement of runway efficiency in normal condition: minimizing the occupation of the runway means serving the greatest number of aircraft with the least possible delay. But other important limitations of airports are the ones in force during low visibility when the number of movements allowed undergoes a relevant reduction. A solution could be the use of technology to support air traffic controllers and pilots to re-establish a good level of situational awareness in order to reduce the limitations in force. In Europe, the technological pillar of the ambitious Single European Sky initiative is the Single European Sky ATM Research project (SESAR). Inside the SESAR project, the RETINA concept is regarding the introduction of augmented reality in aerodrome control tower for the improvement of efficiency and capacity of airports. Within the RETINA concept this thesis aims to study the implementation of new safety nets for aerodrome control tower with the support of augmented reality. This study starts from introduction to air traffic services in order to focus on SESAR project and RETINA concept. Then, concept and graphical solution for Conflicting ATC Clearances Safety Net (CATC) are proposed. Due to Covid-19 pandemic in progress during the thesis work, the implementation and validation activities could not be carried out in RETINA simulator of the University of Bologna labs, so different stand-alone implementation in Unity and validation by questionnaire administered to air traffic controllers are used. This thesis work can be considered as the first iteration in the User-Centered Design process for CATC. After the analysis of the feedback, new iteration in which the design is driven and refined by user-centered evaluation could be setup.
