Abstract:
In a philosophical dialogue, Thomas the traditionalist, Harvey the hedonist, and Eric the economist each discuss their respective views concerning the ethics of human sex acts. In the course of their conversation, it becomes clear that if sex is to be treated like any other pleasure (and therefore enjoyed indiscriminately), it is very difficult to explain what is so bad about rape and/or other forms of sexual assault. Taking any kind of sexual assault to be bad, therefore, requires adopting a more traditional view towards sex.

Abstract:
This article identifies and interprets sexual attitudes among a sample of university students in Galway. Drawing on theoretical models developed by May and Inglis, the paper places the survey findings in the context of socio-cultural changes in Ireland. The author argues that the survey results reflect the division between religious conservatism and increasing secularisation. Although it seems initially that a majority of the Galway students subscribe to a liberal view of sexuality, analysis reveals a more complex picture. Factor analysis shows that attitudes range from religious traditionalism, monogamism, conservatism and patriarchal machismo to liberal hedonism, sex as pleasure and egalitarian open-mindedness.

Abstract:
Impact of wrong sexual behavior of adolescent has been surveyed. It effect on the victims has been proven negative, with consequences like health effect including financial effect been a drawback, acting like a barrier to the ideal development of an individual adolescent. Wrong sexual behavior has been found to be on the increase, forcing adolescents to drop-out of school, exhibiting behaviors that do not conform to the development of the society. Result of this research findings shows the impact of wrong sexual behavior to include: Disregard for cultural/societal moral values, teenage/adolescent pregnancies, rapid increase in STDs and HIV/AIDS transmission, eagerness to practices illicit sexual acts, wrong conception about the opposite sex including sexual intercourse addiction with prostitution tendencies. The high positive percentages achieved from statistical analysis (respondent view-point) presents these impact as been on the increase, capable of dragging the society towards ruin. Recommendations of this study presents a view that the problem of adolescent wrong sexual behavior can be control , presenting guides like proper guidance and counseling , proper monitoring, aggressive sex education, reawakening of traditional African moral and value teachings, inclusion of sex education in religious teachings including proper dressing and restricting of adolescents from pornographic materials.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the impacts of gender norms on the sexual life and experience of a group of young Vietnamese people. It is based on a qualitative study on sexuality and abortion among young people in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. There were two general attitudes towards premarital sex. One view supported young people in a serious, loving relationship engaging in sex before marriage; the other opposed premarital sex because it affected the reputation of girls and their families. These general attitudes were similar to the views on virginity: one group believed strongly in girls maintaining their virginity and the other group emphasised love, emotion and trust, not virginity, as the most important criteria for marriage. Among women there were more supporters than opponents of the traditional view of premarital sex and virginity. Premarital sex was more acceptable for young people in a serious, loving relationship with certain commitment to marriage. Young men considered sex a way to express their love and to become more intimate. Women’s view was that premarital sex only occurred within a serious, loving relationship or when there was a serious commitment to marriage. It is clear that young people’s sexual life is shaped and constrained by gender norms through political interventions, sexual education and moral judgements. Under the pressure of these norms, young people face many difficulties in order to fulfill a safe and satisfying sexual life.

Abstract:
BackgroundThe anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury rate for girls/women has not changed in over 20 years, and they remain 3–6 times more likely to experience injury compared with boys/men. To date, ACL injury prevention and management has been approached from a sex-based biological point of view which has furthered our understanding of injury risk factors, mechanisms, and prevention and rehabilitation programmes. However, the traditional sex-based approach does not take into account the growing recognition of how sex and gender (a social construct) are ‘entangled’ and influence each other.ObjectiveThis paper discusses the curious absence of gender as an influencer in the dialogue surrounding ACL injuries. We propose adding gender as a pervasive developmental environment as a new theoretical overlay to an established injury model to illustrate how gender can operate as an extrinsic determinant from the presport, training and competition environments through to ACL injury and the treatment environment.ApproachWe draw on social epidemiological theories of the embodiment of gender and health to provide plausible examples of how gender may influence ACL injury, and demonstrate the opportunity for new, interdisciplinary research in the field.ConclusionOver 20 years of research has failed to decrease the ACL injury rate disparity between girls/women and boys/men. Embedding gender in the study of ACL injury will heighten awareness of possible influences outside the traditional biological elements, challenge us to think about the inextricable ‘entanglement’ of sex and gender, and inform more effective approaches to ACL injury prevention and treatment.

Abstract:
SummarySexuality is still a taboo in Middle Eastern countries, and Lebanon is no exception. This study’s objective was to evaluate attitudes towards sexuality and its practice among university students in Lebanon and assess their respective correlates. The cross-sectional study was carried out among students selected from seventeen universities across Lebanon. The participants received a self-administered standardized questionnaire that assessed their attitudes towards sexuality. It included questions on socio-demographic factors, risk-taking, risky behaviours and sexuality-related questions. Among 3384 students, 2700 (79.8%) answered the questions on sexuality. Around 15% had engaged in sexual activity, while 20% were regularly sexually active. Among males, 34.8% had never had sexual activity, 29.9% had tried it and 35.3% were regularly sexually active. Among females the results were respectively 85.1%, 5.3% and 9.6% (p<0.001). Only 36% regularly used condoms during their relationships. A liberal attitude towards sex, male sex, motives for risky behaviours, current cigarette smoking and problematic alcohol consumption were associated with sexual activity. Realizing that risky behaviours are dangerous, health concerns related to sexual relationships and a liberal attitude towards sex were associated with regular condom use. However, being bothered by condoms and female sex were inversely associated with condom use. Finally, participants who had motives for, and those who felt excited about risky behaviours, and those reporting current cigarette and waterpipe smoking and problematic alcohol consumption (β=0.600; p=0.002) embraced a more liberal attitude towards sex. Conversely, females (β=−7.58; p<0.001) and individuals who considered risky behaviours as dangerous reported an unfavourable attitude towards sexuality. A substantial proportion of Lebanese university students have regular sexual activity, but a low percentage use condoms for protection. Interventions are required among males in particular in view of these attitude and behavioural changes towards sexuality.

Abstract:
The present study aims to find out the attitude of trainee teachers towards sex education. The attitude of trainee teachers matters a lot because it is them who are future school teachers and are agents of imparting reproductive health related knowledge which is an important issue of population education in bringing positive change in the attitude towards and management of reproductive health of the students. Estimation of trainee teachers’ understanding about sex education gives us idea of the need of inclusion of reproductive health education in teacher education curriculum and with that we are able to prepare a blue print of future road ahead to sensitize students at school level about management of reproductive health that is beneficial not only in maintaining wellbeing of reproductive health but attaining sustainable development goals ensuring gender equality, reducing inequalities and promoting peace and justice in society at large. 78 trainee teachers of semester III (2nd year) of B.Ed. course from Shri Shikshayatan College, Kolkata participated in a questionnaire survey regarding their attitude toward sex education in schools. Through analyzing their attitude, it has been tried to understand how perspectives of trainee teachers towards sex education irrespective of their subject of expertise are important to be effective and appropriate for the successful implementation of reproductive health education in schools.

Abstract:
In 2013 approximately 37,000 people were living with HIV in Ecuador (prevalence 0.4%), representing a generalized epidemic where most new infections arise from sexual interactions in the general population. Studies that examine attitudes towards people living with HIV (PLWH), individual risk perception of acquiring HIV amongst Ecuadorians, and the ways in which levels of risk perception may affect risk behaviors are lacking. This qualitative study aimed to fill this gap in the literature by investigating these issues in the rural, coastal community of Manglaralto, Ecuador, which has among the highest incidence of HIV in Ecuador. We conducted interviews with 15 patients at Manglaralto Hospital. Analysis of interview transcripts revealed widespread negative attitudes towards PLWH, prevalent risk behaviors such as multiple sex partners and lack of condom use, and low individual risk-perception of contracting HIV. These findings underscore the need for increased efforts to prevent further growth of the HIV epidemic in Ecuador.

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines the dubbing of the 2014 American gay-themed series Looking and its treatment of sexual references into Castilian Spanish with a view to exploring the role of audiovisual translation in the discursive construction of homosexuality. While some scholars have decried a historical tendency in translation to attenuate or even suppress references in connection with non-normative sex, the dubbing of Looking, I claim, amplifies these references by way of two strategies: up-scaling and increased explicitness. Drawing upon Jeremy Munday’s (2012) concept of “evaluation” and on appraisal theory as expounded by Martin and White (2005), I aim at revealing the significance of the translator’s lexicogrammatical selections and how these may alter the semiotic import of the characters and, thus, of a certain portrayal of homosexuality. Additionally, such choices may be indicative of the translator’s own stance towards issues of sexuality. Though the strategies analyzed may appear to perpetuate commonplaces regarding gay sexual experience, they ultimately serve, I argue, as a device to generate a language that goes beyond diluted expressions of homosexuality.

Abstract:
Abstract Late Georgians became more acutely aware of identity and difference in the wake of the American and French Revolutions. While the independent Americans shook Britons’ perhaps over-easy assumptions that their colonial cousins were entirely kindred and shared the same political values, the French revolutionaries helped to reinforce the traditional view of fundamental Gallic otherness. Both events, however, did more than simply continue a long British discussion about the differences and similarities between nations and cultures. Both the American and French revolutionaries, as well as such home-grown radicals as John Wilkes and the Quaker abolitionists, raised new debates about the definitions of citizenship and human rights. Domestic events including Scottish Lord Mansfield’s 1772 statement in the Somerset case proposing that perhaps no man could be a slave on British soil, the recognition that the American colonists’ revolutionary rhetoric of slavery and freedom did not translate after independence into the actual freeing of African-American slaves, and such watersheds as the liberation of French colonial slaves in 1794, not to mention of the passage of the 1773 and 1784 India Acts that established British imperial authority over Indian subjects, led Georgians to ask fresh questions about identities.

Abstract:
This chapter describes a turning point in the history of Polish Socialism and its attitude towards the Jewish Question. In dealing with the concept of the Jewish Question, the intention is not, as is often the case, to dwell solely upon the legal status of Jews (emancipation) but to view the problems of Jewish existence in their diversity. According to one view, the dependence upon non Jewish society represents an integral element or, even a determinant, in these problems. In the context of Polish–Jewish relations from the historical perspective of the last hundred years, one may discern six aspects of the subject. These include the development of Socialist thought in its different versions as regards the Jews; the influence of the gradual growth and development of the emerging working class in Polish society; the influence of the relatively large involvement of Jews within the Socialist Labour Movement; the impact of the new processes which matured in the last quarter of the 19th century on the life of Eastern European Jewry in general, and on the Polish–Jewish area in particular; the growth alongside each other, but also in conflict, of two political and ideological movements — Polish Socialism and Jewish labour Socialism; and the tension between the Socialist and the national elements which was common to both yet different in its concrete content.

Abstract:
Abstract On the eve of the First World War the demographic transition in Europe was far from complete and, in particular, the decline in mortality had a long way to go: indeed, it had hardly begun. However, though we are well aware of what has happened since that time, our knowledge of earlier developments is often vague, sometimes confused, and always incomplete. Regular reliable statistics on mortality only became available in Europe towards the end of the nineteenth century. Social scientists know that there is often a time-lag between the appearance of a particular phenomenon and the construction of instruments designed to measure it. In spite of the long history of burial registers this is also true of mortality, whose course altered radically between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is easily understandable that the historical demographers responsible for the organization of this volume are interested in an analysis of mortality over this extended period, when the conditions for demographic transition first appeared. But I would ask for sympathy for the difficulties faced by a demographer (who is not a historian) and who has been asked to provide a synthetic view based on very diverse material within a relatively short space, and for his frustration at having to omit the most recent period in which the decline of mortality was most pronounced, and for which there exists an abundance of statistical information to document the transition.

Clayton, Luke Michael, Ming Hwa Lee, and Alireza Salmachi. "Alleviating Directional Well Trajectory Problems via Data Analytics." In SPE Asia Pacific Oil & Gas Conference and Exhibition. SPE, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/210766-ms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract A consistent leading cause of drilling non-productive time (NPT) is the inability to steer the planned well trajectory trouble-free. Separate from downhole tool and drill bit failures, an unplanned trip to change the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) is required for up to one in every seven drilling runs. Root cause analyses indicate potentially a quarter of all drilling NPT has poor planning or field execution as the failure mechanism, signifying scope for improvement. This paper aims to help guide optimal selection of RSS/motor and bit, to ensure challenging wellpaths will be achieved with minimal NPT associated with BHA trips. Directional drilling analysis typically compares dogleg severity (DLS) for planned and actual trajectory. This metric is fundamentally direction-blind; absolute tortuosity is represented whether planned or unintentional. Without full context, DLS analysis can mask many steering issues. Typically, industry software does not measure how closely the steering inputs match their anticipated responses during a run. Strategic management and identification of zones with erratic toolface control, or strong formation/BHA tendencies is critical. The proposed ‘derived steering’ analytics method was applied to plan demanding 3D trajectories for an Extended Reach offshore campaign in Australia. Existing minimum curvature equations were repurposed to plot previous runs steering inputs and then infer efficiencies for each formation. Supervision was essential to counteract strong consistent right-hand BHA walk tendency for all the variety of wells studied. Multiple NPT events on previous campaigns had resulted from poor steering response in the shallow interbedded geology. In view of quantifiable field-specific risks, wellplans were refined to minimize tortuosity and maximize the design safety factor. The combination of highest anticipated dogleg response rotary steerable technology and bit selection was selected for steering assurance. Modelled tendencies per lithology were shared with wellsite supervisors, and recent drilling results essentially mimicked data analytics. Others operating in this field in the 21st century had drilled total meterage of 36,740m MD from 83 runs. Bit Gradings showed two ‘Lost in Holes’, one ‘Drill String Failure’, six trips for ‘Downhole Tool Failures’, seven for ‘Penetration Rate’, six to ‘Change BHA’, two for ‘Hole Problems’ and one for ‘Downhole Motor Failure’. The current campaign's improved directional drilling offset analysis contributed towards significant avoidance of well delivery NPT to drill 28,061m in 34 runs. No trips were required to change BHA or bit because of inability to follow the trajectory, and field teams were able to pre-empt lithology-specific challenges.
