Full textThis history of the representations of ski touring offers a unique perspective on the study of the evolution of well-being, particularly through the lens of the history of outdoor sports. This research topic has led to an analysis of the evolution of various forms of ski touring practices from the early 20th century to the first part of the 21st century. The aim of this thesis is to understand whether the evolution of ski touring representations reflects changes in conceptions of well-being. Specifically, it seeks to clarify the suggestive power of these representations, which drive the momentum toward suggested forms of practice, describe the sensations brought about by the activity, and sometimes establish connections with health. Indeed, these representations have diversified in line with the social, economic, and cultural transformations of France. This mountain-based physical activity underwent major changes throughout the 20th century, initially serving utilitarian purposes before being considered a vector of well-being, a symbol of autonomy and personal adventure, and eventually being influenced by the democratization of mountain sports and leisure activities. The evolution of the broad representations of ski touring and its influence on utilitarian and collective well-being is analyzed through three distinct periods. In the first period (1900-1950), the thesis highlights the difficult recognition of ski touring in cultural representations. This practice, originally utilitarian, developed discreetly and remained on the fringes of structured winter sports. Despite the emergence and spread of technical advances in representations, the practice appeared rudimentary, and its enthusiasts were marginalized. The imagery surrounding this activity was strongly marked by risk and adventure, with a pronounced contemplative and hygienic dimension. Moreover, Scandinavian influences were decisive, offering a technical or even philosophical model that enriched French representations of ski touring. In the second period (1950-1990), characterized by the rise of a leisure society, ski touring entered a favorable context for its development in representations. During this period of increasing sportification, ski touring stood out and gained popularity due to its contemplative aspects, which placed it within a countercultural movement. In representations, ski touring became a symbol of autonomy and personal adventure, in contrast to an increasingly mechanized society. Through elements like the mountain refuge, practitioners sought well-being and quietude through this activity, which they did not find in other forms of mountain sports. The third period (1990-2022) shows a broad democratization of ski touring representations, driven by a diversification of motivations and practitioners. Today, we speak of "ski tourings," shared between the nostalgic visions of the past and modern hybrid practices. These debates, illustrated by the "collant-pipette" phenomenon, contribute to embedding ski touring within the landscape of mountain sports. Additionally, while technological advancements have made the activity more accessible and safer, the COVID-19 pandemic, marked by the closure of ski lifts, acted as a significant catalyst for the spread of ski touring in cultural representations

Full textA certain part of tourism studies approaches the aspect of the lived space by the resident population. Among them, some studies are focused on the potentials difficulties to live in « holiday country ». (Delaplace, Simon, 2017, Urbain, 2002, Duhamel, Knafou, Segui Llinas, 1998). Furthermore, very few research studies are questioning the possible difficulty to work in « holiday country », at least in geography. Some studies of sociology or of anthropology deal with this topic, (Gentil, 2013, Boirot, 2022). But most of them are only focused on seasonal workers or on working conditions in the working place. This research proposes a method to read health and quality of life of restaurants workers in the touristic place of Mallorca, in Balearic Islands, in Spain. This doctoral research starts with the observation of the invisibility of health of local population, in touristic planification. (Fleuret, Jouault, 2018). What are the socio-spatials characteristics of the touristic place of Mallorca which can affect health and well being of tourism workers? To answer this question, restaurant workers are used as a prism of tourism workers. Some elements of the response are proposed in this thesis by the results of a field investigation of seven months in Mallorca Island, in Spain. This field investigation is based on direct observation method (Arborio, Fournier, 2021) and the conduct of semi-directive interviews. This qualitative study is based on an analytical framework which represents a socio-spatial frame of reference to analyze health of restaurant workers in a touristic context. This analytical framework is built with literature and more specifically with the list of health determinants. The process of this field investigation takes place in a specific context of reactivation of tourism activity after confinement due to Covid 19 pandemic, in which the lack of workers in service industry, especially in touristic places, is more and more problematic. This specific context acts as a social marker of difficulties lived by restaurant workers in touristic places. The results of this study should help us to understand and apprehend lived space of these workers

Full textWell-being and ill-being are topical themes, whether in the mainstream media or in managerial literature. The number of debates on ill-being at work has begun to grow in recent years, reaching up to National Assembly level alongside the accumulation of public reports on the theme of ill-being. This is concrete proof of the importance of this problem and the progressive involvement of the State in its resolution (CAS, 2009, Copé et al, 2010, Dériot, 2010, Lachmann, et al, 2010). Acknowledging the stress and suffering within the workplace today, and wanting to improve the well-being of employees, is certainly not an imaginary issue. However, even if there is a wealth of literature available regarding unhappiness at work, it remains difficult to define what well-being at work actually is (Richard, 2012).Therefore, the ambition of this research paper is to study in the most complete way possible, what well-being and ill-being at work really means, as well as the links between them. The aim of this is to propose the most feasibly comprehensive research model, adapted to the current business-environment context. To do this, there are two qualitative studies that have been undertaken, one with nurses, using the method of immersion and a second study conducted with employees and public sector workers within the Paris region.A second phase consists of quantitative studies. Four studies were conducted; the first one (n = 317) was based on several companies, a second one (n = 350) was specific to executives in the context of organisational change, a third study related to public sector workers in particular areas (n = 1065) and the final study was based on a specific local authority (n = 1374).Therefore, this thesis contributes to a better understanding of the concept of well-being at work and serves to highlight the different models and theories surrounding the two concepts, while emphasising the specific characteristics of both well-being and ill-being at work. This will allow us to develop different managerial recommendations to improve well-being at work, while making it easier for researchers to explore different research avenues

The first part presents the main characteristics of this school and introduces the situation of neutrality of exchange rate arrangements in a simple general equilibrium lodel describing a pure barter exchange economy with incomplete financial markets. The second part evaluates the robutness of this result in a monetary economy. The last part uses this result as an benchmark to show that imperfections restore a hierarchy between fixed and flexible rates as long as welfare is concerned

Full textFarmers are part of a socio-professional category that expresses some form of unease due to multiple pressures and changes in their profession. Our approach focuses on interindividual differences contributing to adaptation and resistance, in a particularly threatening context, or favoring the worsening of a state of psychological suffering. To this end, we focus on the concept of resources and in particular on the Conservation of Resources theory (Hobfoll, 1989). This theory allows us to understand which are the material, energy, personal characteristics and conditions resources and among them, which gains are the most protective and which losses are the most destructive of the farmers' health. To test our hypotheses, this research is based on a two-stage quantitative and longitudinal measurement method for a cohort of Lorraine (France northeastern region) farmers. Thus, health is assessed in terms of well-being (happiness, vigor, life satisfaction, perceived health) and ill-being (stress, burnout, musculoskeletal pain). Our results obtained by using structural models (Partial Least Square Path Modeling) confirm the preponderance of the deleterious effects of resources’ losses on health at T1, conversely, and to a lesser extent, that the resources’ gains protect it. On the other hand, the change in health at T2 is predicted only by resource erosion. Our results underline the need to prevent the loss of personal and conditions resources and then energy to preserve farmers’ health

Full textThis thesis aims to contribute to recent debates on the potential benefits of trade openness among African countries. This, by addressing the triptych regional trade agreements, welfare and conflict. The African continent is currently facing two major governance challenges: regional integration and the management of armed conflicts. Indeed, the trade performance of African countries remains marginal compared to the rest of the world. This is despite the different trade policies implemented since the 1970s (import substitution policy, North-South regional agreement, etc.). Among these trade policies, African governments have decided to focus on regional agreements in order to increase trade among member countries. Have these agreements had the expected effect ? To what extent ?If we refer to popular belief, the answer seems to be no. However, this answer ignores the potential political benefits of trade openness. As such, the work presented here first examines the effect of African regional agreements on trade and welfare. This is done using the latest developments in international trade theory and the best techniques for estimating gravity equations. Second, we analyze both theoretically and empirically the effect of increased trade on the probability of a civil war occurring. The results obtained allow us to conclude, on the one hand, that nearly half of the trade between members of trade agreements in Africa would not have been possible without the signing of the RTAs. On the other hand, both domestic and international trade, reduces the risk of civil conflict in Africa

Rationalization of labor has become caregivers by implementing these standards, not taking into account the considerations of the psychological and physical activity providers, where the effects on their health and the manifestations of suffering at work. It is in the context that addressed occupational health officers not in terms of the reduction of suffering at work but in the development of psychological well-being. This study puts into play and collates analytical techniques of the numerous data (analyses of similarity, factorial and discriminant analyses. . . ). A certain number of methodological contributions will be proposed (index of centrality c, cohesice force. . . ). The results substantiate the hypotheses. On one hand wa have found a relationship of reciprocity between the representation of thermic comfort in winter, well-being in one's home, and consumer habits in heating (measured). On the other hand, the operative proximity of the representation of wintertime thermic comfort, as concerns consumption of heat, entails a predictive capacity of the latter which is superior to that of one's comfort in his home. In short the social representation of well-being at home would seem to be the representation of "the mother" which guarantees the essential aspect of cohesion and coherence of the representational whole, as well as the principal point of the common foundation of the contents

Full textSubjective well-being may be defined as a hedonic approach of happiness referring to an overall evaluation of individual’s life integrating both cognitive and affective components. Although that concept has been the focus of a considerable scientific literature, few research explored explicitly its relationships with career decision-making process. Our literature review highlighted the opposition between bottom-up and top-down approaches in the study of the relationships between these two variables making particularly complex to determine the causal direction. Thus, the purpose of this thesis was to bring a better understanding on the relationships between subjective well-being and career indecision. Also, in order to test the role of individual and contextual characteristics, we conducted a cross-cultural comparison which include Korean, US, and French college students. The first part of our results was devoted to explore the psychometric properties of several instruments used in the different countries while the second part was more focused on the analysis of the relationships between subjective well-being and career indecision. A series of three studies were conducted in each target country for examining successively the moderator role of individual characteristics, personality traits, and psychological well-being. Overall, results showed that subjective well-being was significantly associated with career indecision across samples despite several moderator effects were observed. Based on our literature review and results, we developed a theoretical model integrating subjective well-being and career indecision while arguing distinctive mechanisms in bottom-up and top-down approaches. The implications of those results toward a holistic approach of individual counseling are discussed in both research and practical directions

Medical health was historically constituted in opposition with certain philosophies. The stoicians oppose a will of the present event at the fear of the future accident of the Hippocratique dietetics. The "great health" of Nietzsche which opposes an affirmative Will to power to an energetic thought distressed by degradation. The "philosophical vitality" of Deleuze sees an intense and free life in the "Body without organs" against the cybernetic integration of interdependent organisms. Medicine protects a body which is a machine of accidents. This body is plunged in the oppressing time of wear. Its life is undermined by an omnipresent death which nibbles it and closes it. Philosophies of the "great health" think a body which is constituted through experiments. It lives in an immediate, innocent and infinite time. Death is nothing for him, except a self-destruction which is the meaning of life

Full textThis thesis exploits quasi-natural experiments, both historical and contemporary, to provide causal evidence on broad questions at the frontier of the development and political economy literature. In particular, it delves into the long-run effects of emigration, the formation of identities and political preferences, and the long-term impacts of school segregation. The first chapter examines the consequences of emigration for human capital accumulation at origin, taking as a laboratory the Galician diaspora formed at the beginning of the XXth century. Leveraging data spanning over one hundred years, it provides the first evidence of a positive impact of emigration in the communities of origin across several generations. The second chapter investigates whether the emotional trigger of sports can influence identity and political preferences. Focusing on Catalonia and Football Club Barcelona (FCB) as an ideal setting, I show empirically that FCB performance is directly linked with feelings of Catalan identity and support for secession. Furthermore, I explore the mechanisms behind this connection and its potential implications for electoral results. The third chapter takes advantage of a major reform under the Pinochet’s dictatorship, which introduced a system of school vouchers, to analyze the long-term effects of school segregation on subjective well-being. The findings show that the reform had unintended consequences, hurting children from poorer family backgrounds who today, more than 30 years later, have significantly lower levels of life satisfaction

Interruption of sedentary behavior appears to have beneficial effects on health and well-being of people. Few studies have examined the effects of alternatives to sitting on well-being of employees at work. Using semi-experimental protocol, the potential of active meetings on ergocycle have been quantified and evaluated with 30 employees of Université Laval. The results showed that it is possible to perform an active meeting of 60 minutes at an intensity varying between low and moderate without reducing the quality of work. Active meetings seem to have the potential to reduce perceived stress during cognitive effort, without compromising productivity. In our opinion, it would be in the interest of public health to focus more on interventions that reduce sedentary behavior in workplace.

Full textImproving dairy cows’ welfare is a major challenge in response to citizen concerns. The present thesis aimed to identify (i) major welfare problems, (ii) which farm characteristics are associated with the impairment of welfare and (iii) which factors are associated with the impairment of human-animal relationships. We conducted an epidemiological survey and used the Welfare Quality R protocol to assess dairy cows’ welfare. In general, prevalence of lameness was low and cows had opportunities to walk. The absence of hunger and thirst and the expression of species-specific behaviors were achieved but variable between farms. Resting comfort, skin injuries, health, social behavior, cows’ emotional state and human-animal relationships were affected and variable. Disbudding was often performed without pain relief. The main risk indicators of poor cow welfare were farm location (for thirst), breed (hunger, social behavior), housing (resting comfort and skin injuries), the interaction housing-breed (emotional state) and location-milking system (expression of species-specific behaviors). Action plans should be designed according to farm types. The quality of the human-animal relationship was not associated with farm main characteristics, but to calving conditions, farmers’ attitudes and cows’ social behavior. In addition, we observed large variations between-cows in their responses to humans, suggesting that individual behavioral traits of cows play a major role

Full textThe works on this thesis go beyond traditional concepts of welfare, such as income, consumption, and wealth, and include into the analysis time use, discrimination, power relations inside the households, equality of opportunities, and segregation in the labor markets. ln Part 1 of this work, we base our measure of welfare on both a monetary and a time dimensions, including domestic production in the Beckarian sense into the analysis. From a given allocation of monetary and time resources, we calculate consumer's reactions to changes in monetary prices of different commodity groups. We complete the analysis with the calculation of utility changes given the introduction of a tax in the aggregated food group. Part Il of this work is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of labour market outcomes. The third chapter of the thesis studies the discrimination suffered by women and ethnic minorities in Bolivia, Ecuador, and Guatemala by means of quantile decomposition techniques. We complete the analysis with the study of the intra-household allocation of time determinants to paid and unpaid work. Finally, the last chapter focuses on the influence of the minimum wage in shaping the workers's wage distribution and its impact on employment rate in the formai and informai sectors of the economy. The high level of noncompliance, and the important share of informai workers cali for new policies and institutions concerned with the enforcement of labor regulations, and the design of social securitv systems and laws that protect informai workers

Full textWorkplace well-being and malaise are current concepts that overlap many models and theories from various disciplines and epistemologies. The relevance of these models can be questioned in order to understand the relationship to work of intellectual professions, of expertise activities or knowledge workers.Starting from a synthesis of existing literature on these topics, this thesis studies the relationship to work for natural sciences laboratory occupations. This work is a qualitative, comprehensive and interpretative approach, based on a Commissariat à l’Énergie Atomique et aux Énergies Alternatives (CEA) four laboratories embedded and cross-cases studies. This research shows that different statuses present in the laboratories share the same commitment and well-being drivers but have different malaise factors. In addition, they all have some kind of “ambiguous relationship with work”, simultaneous combination of well-being and malaise, which requires to rethink the relationship between well-being and malaise at work

Full textThis research aims to define comfort, a complicated matter which has never been fully studied till today. Comfort can be defined from various components, i. E. Social atmosphere and physical environment. For collegians, social atmosphere has a biggest importance. So, in order they feel well, social atmosphere has to be particularly satisfying. Moreover, social atmosphere has an impact on the way children feel their physical environment. So, if social atmosphere is good, physical environment is satisfying and reciprocal. By another way, characteristics of environment have an impact as regards physical comfort in the structure of a general definition of this concept. When physical environment is satisfying, physical comfort is unknown. On the opposite, if physical components are not satisfying, physical comfort becomes important for them. Nevertheless, children have some requests in matter of physical environment, concerning more particularly functional aspect of school buildings. Thus, they give us an homogeneous and durable definition of the notion of comfort

Full textThis study aims at 1. Improving the understanding of the factors involved in the horse's reactions towards humans by considering, among others, their welfare state and 2. At identifying reliable indicators of the horses' welfare state based on multidimensional approach. Our results show that these reactions depend on the horses' global perception of humans, cues emitted by humans (attentional state) and the animals' welfare state. In a second part, we realized a study with multi-dimensional approaches on the indicators of the horses' welfare, by comparing health-related, physiological, behavioural and postural measures. Our results allow us to identify a flattest posture for horses from riding schools, a fixed posture in the box, characterized by a flat neck and a decreased reactivity, and a backward usual ear position linked with altered welfare. On the physiological side, we observed lower cortisol levels for horses with altered welfare. Overall, this work contributes to a better understanding of the factors involved in horses' reactions towards humans and put the emphasis on reliable indicators of the horse's welfare

Full textIn West Africa, marriage is a major social institution. In Senegal, for example, in 2006, nearly 90% of women over 25 years of age were once married. It represents also a major disruption the daily life, especially for the bride, who in most cases leaves the household in which she grew up. Another important feature of marriage in West Africa is that it involves a large set of actors: not only the couple but also their parents and extended family. The ceremony is also characterized by important financial exchanges, between different people: the bride's, groom's and neighbours' families. These stylized facts can be examined in terms of their relationship to women's well-being within their households. The objective of this thesis is to add to the study of the subject. In the first chapter, we consider whether parents have incentives to marry their children to a member of the kin group in order to better insure against adverse idiosyncratic income shocks.Exploiting original panel data from a household survey collected in Senegal in 2006/2007 and 2011/2012, we find that daughters' within-kin-group marriage helps their parents' household to better smooth food consumption when a parent has fallen ill. This better smoothing is notably driven by the fact that households having married a daughter within the kin group receive relatively more transfers. Our results indicate that parents' demand for insurance can explain part of their demand for marrying within the kin group their daughter. They extend the literature on inter-linkages between marriage decisions and demand for insurance. The second chapter examines the impact of an education policy on women's well-being in Benin. Taking advantage of a sharp increase in school constructions in the 1990s in this country, we assess the causal impact of a primary education program on primary school attendance, age at marriage and tolerance of intimate partner violence. Using a double difference method, along with a regression kink design, we find that the program increased the probability to attend primary school in rural areas. The policy also decreased the probability to find wife beating tolerable. We show that, in this context, the benefits of girls' education have percolated down to women's well-being beyond the initial goal of the policy. In the third chapter, we investigate the relationship between the bride price and the well-being of the wife in her household. We take into account, the simultaneous existence of other marriage payments, flowing in different directions between the stakeholder, that is largely ignored. To assess the impacts of these marital transferson the women's well-being in Senegal, we use a unique survey that enquires separately about the different marriage payments. We highlight the strength of the link between what is given to the bride herself and her welfare, contrary to the looseness of the link with what is given to the family

Full textThis dissertation deals with several topics around well-being measurement and welfarism, mostly in ethics, philosophy of mind and philosophy of science. The concept of well-being plays a crucial role in a variety of moral theories, including welfarist theories. This raises a series of questions about its measurement, both in its metaphysical and epistemological aspects. Since well-being has to be aggregated in order to determine the level of collective well-being, it must have some quantitative properties. However, full measurability requires to have an epistemic access to these quantitative properties. We address these epistemological questions from two complementary perspectives. First, we look at the kind of epistemic access that a subject has to the affective component of well-being, namely pleasure and displeasure. Second, we explore some methodological issues related to the measurement of collective wellbeing when a welfarist theory is put in practice

Full textThis thesis consists of two main topics: the impact of brand territory of origin (TOO) on consumer behaviour, and the impact of conspicuous consumption on consumer subjective well-being (SWB).On one side, this thesis highlights the importance of territory associations for consumers’ perception of product authenticity and empirically tests the chain of effects, from a TOO association to perceived authenticity to consumers’ self–brand connections. An experimental method and a partial least square (PLS) approach were adopted to test hypotheses with 665 Chinese consumers. Results demonstrate that TOO exerts a positive impact on perceived product authenticity, which improves consumers’ self–brand connections. In addition, compared with country of origin (COO), TOO has a unique positive impact on perceived authenticity and a direct positive effect on consumers’ self–brand connections. Also, the positive impact of TOO on perceived authenticity is enhanced by consumers’ familiarity with the TOO and congruence between the product category and TOO. But only one outcome of TOO (perceived authenticity) and one product category (lavender soap) have been considered in this study. Noting the diminishing relevance of COO associations, this study demonstrates that territory of origin is an appealing alternative strategy for strengthening brand equity. On the other side, despite the growing importance of conspicuous consumption in all parts of the world, little research focuses on the effect of conspicuous consumption on consumer SWB, and when this is the case, the results are controversial. We propose and test a bi-motive hypothesis whereby the valence of the effect of conspicuous consumption on consumer SWB depends on whether the conspicuous object is used as self-signaling conspicuous consumption or other-signaling conspicuous consumption. The results of three studies demonstrate that the self-signaling conspicuous consumer has a significantly higher level of SWB than the other-signaling conspicuous consumer. Furthermore, consumer materialism enhances the negative relationship between other-signaling conspicuous consumption and consumer SWB

Full textWe evaluate the distributive effects of income taxation by means of its impact on the social welfare and on the inequality of incomes. Three main original results are derived, namely : 1 - the concept of absolute lorenz dominance is introduced and it is shown to generate an unambiguous pairwise ranking when the absolute lorenz curves of the distributions do not cross. Absolute lorenz domi- nance is contrasted with relative lorenz dominance and it is empirically shown to exhibit a wider degree of comparability. 2 - minimally progressive schemes in the sense of fei (1981) are characterized by means of their redistributive effects : if tax liability is increasing with income, then, whatever the pre-tax distribution, the post-tax distribution dominates the pre-tax one in the absolu- te lorenz sense, and conversely. 3 - convex taxation is characterized by means of a simple and intuitively appealing welfare monotonicity property : if the margi- nal tax-rate is increasing with income, then, whatever the pre-tax distribution, a welfare improvement in the pre-tax distribution results in a welfare improvement in the post-tax distribution, and conversely

Full textThis research focuses on the construction and implementation of a serendipian approach to youth unemployment. The aim of this approach is to help them to find and keep a job while addressing this transition in a more serene way. We split our analysis in two parts. The first part of this thesis work focuses on self-perception and self-representation of NEETs - Neither in Employment nor Education and Training. The challenge here is to better understand the NEETs population. This first part consists of two studies: - Study 1 biographical interview (N = 28): the objective of this first study is to better understand the course of NEETs by collecting the successions of events that constitute the path of the person and the way in which she or he experienced it. - Study 2 SR - social representation (N = 137): with an exploratory approach, the objective of this study isto describe the SRs of the NEETs and of a control group made up of people who work, who study or who are in training. The second objective is then to compare these RS. The second part focuses on how to increase the employability of NEETs. Three studies compose this part: - Study 3 semi-directive interview with recruiters (N = 11): the aim here is to see to what extent the pseudo-serendipian skills are used and perceived in the recruiting sphere by the recruiters themselves. We also asked them about their perception of NEETs. - Study 4a and 4b effectiveness and impact of pseudo-serendipity skills training (N = 147): first, we tested the training with students. We offered this training to NEETs. The objective here is to study the impact of pseudo-serendipian skills training on the well-being and employability of these young people

Full textPsychological health of older people is now a major concern. This thesis is part of cross-cultural perspective in two countries : Gabon and France. It aims to examine the determinants of the psychological well-being of Gabonese and French older people through individual factors (for example, personality and motivation), environmental factors (forexample, culture and social relations) and how the elderly person interacts with their socialenvironment. The Self-Determination Theory (Deci and Ryan, 2002) served as support, as itexplains how personal goals and environmental factors can influence satisfaction of basicpsychological needs and personal well-being, regardless of their age.The results in studies 1 and 2 indicated that psychological well-being among Gaboneseand French older people is determined by personality dimensions, relationships with others(perceived social support and compassionate love) and extrinsic motivation. In Study 3, wevalidated a scale for measuring the satisfaction of psychological needs in the elderly. Finally, the results of Study 4 indicated that psychological well-being is influenced by culture and the satisfaction of basic psychological needs. However, effects of individualism and collectivismseem more significant among Gabonese older people.Overall, these results are in line with previous studies. It bring additional knowledge regarding the importance of relationships with others on older people psychological wellbeing. Moreover, our results support the self-determination theory perspective concerning the universality of the psychological needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness

Full textThe ageing process exposes the fragility and the psycho-social and health issues that affect well-being. Coupled with the increase of population, the issue of support in old age is a real problem for society. While human resources are scarce and expensive, many players seeking solutions turn to technology to support the phenomenon. However these solutions are often stigmatizing, costly, require a learning effort and whose usefulness is often questioned. Specialized tools in aging struggle to penetrate the living space of the elderly. In this context, an affordable technology, which would anchor naturally in everyday life and whose design never evokes disability, has particularly interesting qualities. Positioned in the actimetry applied to gerontechnology, this doctoral work therefore aims to explore the potential of telephone metadata for social behavior deduction and the detection of events that may affect the well-being and the quality of life of the elderly. The underlying idea is that human behavior, whether biological or social, is quantifiable in relation to an individual average and a significant deviation is the sign of a characteristic event. We use digital traces as a reflection of the telephone activity to reconstruct some social patterns related to social activity and health. The results show statistically significant correlations between variables of telephone and social activity, the state of mental and physical health. This work validates previous research that gives the phone a key role in the management of social life and appeased negative emotions related to psychological symptomatology. It also enables to deepen the current knowledge about the relationship between physical health and use of the phone

Full textIndicators of positive emotions in animals are still scarce. However, many studies showed that favour these emotions is a promising way to improve individual welfare state. This study aims to validate and identify some indicators of positive emotions in horses. First, based both on an experimental study using accelerometers and the observation of riding school horses during their regular feeding time, we characterized anticipatory behaviours in this specie and showed that they were triggered by an environmental cue. Moreover, anticipatory behaviours were associated with frustration and thus were not reliable indicators of positive emotions. However, an increase of their intensity may reflect a poor welfare state. Then, the use of an EEG helmet designed for awake horses free from their movements, allowed us to (i) confirm the left-hemisphere bias for positive emotions processes and the right hemisphere bias for attentional processes, (ii) highlight the implication of theta waves in cognitive attentional processes, (iii) underline interactions between attentional and emotional processes in horses. Moreover, we showed that the measures of attentional characteristics thanks to a visual attention test (VAT) was useful to define attentional capacities at work. The same test conducted without a human was rather useful to evaluate the horses’ welfare state. Finally, a comparative approach based on the observation of horses living either in restricted or in naturalistic conditions revealed that snort (out of breathing difficulties due to illness or poorly fitting equipment) could be a reliable indicator of positive emotions of low intensity as it would be the expression of the horses’ positive appraisal of a situation. This works opens up promising fundamental and applied perspectives and applications

Full textAnimal welfare is the name of a tension between the production of norms and the production of knowledge. Through the study of the interactions between science, politics and factory farming, this dissertation sheds light on the concrete operators of non-human exploitation, conceptualized as a power system (dispositif). To write the history of battery cages from the early 20th century to the 1980s, I go through a wide range of unpublished archives, hubs between science and its world (institutional archives, technical reports, scientific publications, masscirculation newspapers, legal texts, patents, industrial regulations). I describe the constitution of animal welfare disciplines, i.e. their history, the elements and relationships that make them up, and the rules that govern them. I question the distinction between norm, knowledge and commodities production : they work together as operators of animal exploitation, but could possibly act as counterweights against it

Full textTo develop an " Austrian Welfare Economics ", two ways are possible. First, economists can draw their inspiration from what has been written before. Even if the Orthodox Welfare Economics has some methodological weaknesses, a general methodological framework is followed by mainstream welfare theoreticians. Austrians can draw their inspiration from this framework. KIRZNER follows this way when he tries to conciliate Mainstream and Austrian principles to elaborate his Coordination Criterion. Second, economists ignore all what has been made before, and directly start from the (autonomous and independent) Austrian Paradigm. ROTHBARD follows this rupture with his Demonstrated Preference inspired from Misesian Praxeology. In both cases, Austrian Economics is not Orthodox Economics, and Austrian Welfare Economics does not seem like Mainstream Welfare Economics. The "Austrian Welfare" has an original meaning: concrete results as optima or maxima are not important; but, the understanding of the process (through which people acquire knowledge to reach their purposes) that leads to these results is essential. This is why the Austrian equivalent to Welfare Economics can be called "Good Ways Economics"

Full textAfter a general introduction and a survey of literature, the contribution of this thesis is to determine the role of the demand in the emergence of unsold stock of goods based on consumer’s preferences argument. Throughout the thesis, we consider a strategic game with two players under perfect information, certainty and price flexibility. Consumers are of two types: with appreciation to the display and without. A modified monopoly chooses both the price and the display. Chapter 2 presents an original model to determine the optimal markup for both elastic and inelastic goods (unlike the Lerner index that is used only for elastic goods). Chapter 3 is an extension of the previous one. It is about the determination of an optimal markup with the presence of unsold stock of goods. The fourth and final Chapter analyzes under which conditions an unsold stock of goods is supported by a pure strategy Nash equilibrium. All the models developed present a welfare analysis

Full textAcademics well-being at work has been studied, by taking into account the effects of motivation, involvement and work-life influence (i.e., positive or negative). A four-dimensional well-being scale was created: satisfaction, meaning, inner-peace and harmony. We explored the effect of contextualization on well-being, and inner-peace seems less influenced than other elements. All factors in the well-being scale are impacted by growth (i.e., when a person considers that it develops himself over time, appropriately) and conflicts from private to professional life. Positive influences from private to work life, and negative ones from work to private life, impact satisfaction, harmony and inner peace. We created an inventory of seven motivations: Contribution to Progress by Research; (2) Teamwork in Teaching; (3) Self-esteem through Teaching; (4) Autonomy in Research Activities; (5) Positive Relationships with Students; (6) Autonomy in Teaching; and (7) Collaboration. Five (i.e., 1, 2, 4, 5, 7) are positively correlated with autonomous motivations of the theory of self-determination. This scale would predict well-being, work-life influence, and membership to time-allocation profiles. Academics are variously involved in work activities (i.e., in research, teaching or collective activities). Some have a balanced engagement in the three activities, others preferred or neglected one. We propose to the community an inventory of academic motivations and a scale of well-being that could be used by professionals interested with these issues

Full textAnimal welfare law is globalizing. Beyond presenting its world-wide evolution, this thesis demonstrates the existence of legally strong foundations toward a universal protection of animal welfare in international law. What is animal welfare law? Mostly unknown in the legal science of French-speaking countries, animal welfare law concerns all the prescriptions which aim at reducing the poor welfare of the animals used for various ends (such as food and clothes production, experiments, entertainments, captivity, company etc.). Those prescriptions generally aim at condemning some acts of cruelty and promoting the good treatment of these animals. However, economic, scientific, cultural or traditional purposes pose often severe limitations or exceptions. This study presents the general content and outlines the main strengths and weaknesses of animal welfare law in the world. In a first part, this thesis brings to light the increasing progression of animal welfare law. First adopted by Anglo-Saxon and European countries in the XIXth century, anti-cruelty laws then spread to other countries in the XIXth century. From the 1960s onwards, a new model of legislation was born, explicitly concerning animal welfare. Right after appeared the European instruments on this subject, now regulating activities such as farming, transports, slaughter and experiments. They are aimed to reduce the suffering of the animals, recognized by the European Union as "sentient beings" deserving protection. In a second part, this thesis states that animal welfare is emerging as a new objective internationally, even universally, since the beginning of this XXIth century. In this sense, the objective of animal welfare protection has been integrated recently in international instruments, most notably in the standards of the World Organisation for Animal Health from early 2000'. Today, animal welfare is beginning to be addressed by the largest global organizations, such as the World Trade Organization and even the United Nations. Can the protection of animal welfare be formally recognized by the Community of States and enshrined in international law as a new universal imperative? Using the theoretical framework of the formal sources of international law lead to the following results: there is a common ground on animal welfare law, from which general principles can be identified, in order to allow the establishment of solid foundations towards the recognition of animal welfare protection as a new universal imperative for the Community of States, particularly in a global convention. Finally, the main conclusion underlines that animal welfare law is currently weak regarding its protective goal. Indeed, it aims less to truly protect the welfare of the animals, than to merely reduce their suffering. However, in progressing towards a better consideration of animals' interests, a real protection of animal welfare can become a future reality in the law. Key words: animal welfare; animal law; comparative law; European law; international law; general principles of law; conventions; international organizations.
