Full textThis project refers to a study somewhat controversial , as in focusing less recognized and valued hand, although the dynamics of tourism pass to take another view , you can not beforehand consider favorable or unfavorable . Analyzes the phenomenon related to conception or perception of poverty from tourism residents and non residents of the Favela of Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro tourist guides . It is a subject to an object of research somewhat controversial , but about which there is already an academic and scientific concern and deserves an investigator look. Fits as a qualitative study whose methodological procedure based on interviews and participant observation , and the geographic divisions chosen the Rocinha slum , for its expressiveness and for being a pioneer in this type of tourism , had to conducting fieldwork lasting six months, which was accompanied by at least four hours walking work of sixteen tour guides, eight residents and eight non- residents in the community, working for different travel agencies and tourism. End of each tour, all tour guides answered a semi-structured questionnaire, containing nineteen questions. Most respondents tour guides authorized record interview, which has made it possible to analyze the speech through spoken language. In tourism, foreign tourists are the main target, although rarely also count with the participation of domestic tourists. Notes that the relationship between poverty and slums, from the perceptions of tourist guides residents better reflects the reality of favela residents compared with non residents guides, since they fully know all the intricacies and better the difficulties they have endured and still go, when it comes to the issue of stigmatization respect, by which has suffered by Brazilian society, in relation to live in slums, and have your dwelling place as a tourist attraction. While presenting the social reality of Rocinha consistently during his work, the non residents guides worry about being as natural as possible with tourists as much as the locals show slum, in the same way they avoid authorize tourists to take compromising photos and that will expose the intimacy of community residents . Concludes that, while recognizing the importance of elevation to the rank of tourist attraction and its promising prospects, requires attention and priority, given the greater precariousness of the human condition in relation to the prime areas in which it operates tourism should be a vector of development, not a masking of reality

Full textTourism is a booming economic sector that tends to incorporate the sustainable sites into its strategies. Sustainable development, which in the strategy to improve the quality of life for all without causing adverse environmental and socio-cultural outcome, gradually come into sight. However, the tour guide plays a key role in the tourism industry. As a person who assures the contact between supply and demand, it has an essential function for the advancement of tourism in a sustainable direction. Given the absence of research in this area, we chose to focus ours on this issue based on a case study in China. Three research objectives were then identified: Understanding Sustainable Development and the relationships with tourism; exploring the roles and responsibilities of tour guides and their involvement in promoting sustainability; examining why the tour guides actually exercise their functions in order to support the development of sustainable tourism. After the literature review and application of triangulation methods in this thesis - interviews, participant observation and questionnaire survey -, we recommend to orient the practices in the tourism industry towards a healthy and sustainable development in a hierarchical structure: (1) Ameliorate the certification, optimize the training program, strengthen the control of tourist guides; (2) Promote the functions of the Guild of tour guides; (3) Improve the working conditions of guides and reinforce the education for sustainable development in this industry

Full textThis study compared job stressors between female and male Tour Leaders (TLs) operating in South America, mainly Peru and Bolivia. In 2017, 82 TLs were surveyed about their level of stress on 30 items representing four sources of job stress: job roles, nature of the job, tourists’ attitudes and behaviors, and external factors. Statistical tests determined that female TLs perceive higher levels of stress from sexual harassment, natural disasters, facilitating the tourists-locals interaction, having limited free time during trips and constant packing/unpacking. Male TLs reported higher levels of stress when tourists supersede their authority. These results indicate the need to amend policy and managerial guidelines to increase gender equity in the tour leading profession.

From the perspective of travel writing, we propose to investigate the procedures used by Murilo Mendes in Carta Geográfica (Geographic Letter), and along with this, study the strategies of the poet, his drawings of maps and letters, regarding the displacement of texts and their relations with the body of the work. Amongst other issues, when dealing with Carta Geográfica, we have to deal with its incompleteness and imperfections - in the Portuguese sense of inacabado/unfinished, as observed by Luciana Stegagno Picchio, in a comment to the notes and variants of the edition of his complete poetry and prose. Picchio also says that Carta geográfica will remain as a scrapbook, a book of notes and leftovers. An immediate effect of this is to renew interest for this book, because it indicates that collage and scripts were used as strategies, procedures so dear to Murilo Mendes. A significant interest for his work in prose can be explained by the memorialist character of these texts. Many readings have been made based on archive theories and self writings; however, our intention is to read Carta Geográfica as a cartography of desires, using navigation strategies that should, in a way, function as intertextual messages in bottles which are thrown out to the sea during the dynamics of guided tours.

The aim of this research is to design a GUI (Graphical User Interface) of Mobile Tour Guides prototyping system and to verify the usability. GUI design adopted the concept of Information Landscape and Topology based on the interaction (information, space, and users), the nodes (tourist attractions information), and the relationship between nodes. According to the concepts mentioned above, we designed a GUI of the prototyping system and investigate the System Usability. This analysis adopts two factors factorial design, i.e., 2 (higher and lower 3C electronic devices user’s experience) x 2 (mobile device with touch screen and without touch screen). Participants were required to conduct interaction tasks of the Mobile Tour Guides prototyping system. After the experiment, participants were asked to fill out the questionnaires of System Usability Scale (SUS) and NASA-Task Load Index (TLX). The results revealed that: (1) In all respects, 80% participants stated that this GUI is easy to understand and use. (2) When female participants were required to conduct the interface tasks of mobile system, they have much more senses of frustration and obstacle than male participants do. (3) Participants who hold mobile device with touch screen will spend much more energy in learning this interface system and feel more frustrated than who hold mobile without touch screen. (4) Participants with higher 3C electronic devices user experience not only get the whole concept of the system, but have higher operating efficiency. (5) However, no significant differences are found for the interaction between two factors (higher / lower user’s experience and mobile device with / without touch screen).

During the past one year, there are several serious travel disputes, the so called “bulling of tour guide”, leading to tourists dissatisfaction and complaints as well as damaging the destination images. Tour guide, as a first line of tourism service industry, should be paid more attention on his/her professional ethics and behaviors. According to Techniques of Neutralization, the research aims to understand how tour guide rationalizes his/her deviant behavior enabling drifts between legal and illegal. Moreover, exploring and analyzing the process of neutralization would make it possible to confirm the relationships among ethical emotions, cognitions and behavioral intentions. This research discovers Techniques of Neutralization used by the tour guide mainly thanks to video transcripts of tour guides abusing tourists. Through case study approach, a qualitative research design is adopted to gather typical and representative information related to bulling incidents of tour guides. Data are analyzed in Template Analysis Style by identifying techniques according to Neutralization Theory. The information collected makes it easier for researchers interesting in issues of professional ethics and deviant behaviors to have better understandings how neutralization works. In addition, it gives government officials in the tourism-related sector some advices to deal with and avoid deviant behaviors of tour guides by emphasizing that there is no excuse for service code of conduct non-compliance. The value of this research lies in its analysis and results. The research focuses on the professional ethics and discovers two new techniques in the case. These help us realizing the role-conflict results in ethic dilemma and furthermore the deviant behaviors.

In 2008, the Republic of China signed the Travel Agreement for Mainland Residents Traveling to Taiwan with China, opening tourism to the people of Mainland China to travel directly to Taiwan. As of now, eight years have passed and there has been a recorded total number of 15,762,203 people having visited Taiwan as at the end of 2015. As a response to Mainland tourists traveling to Taiwan, the number of Mandarin-speaking tour guides has increased from 4,951 since 2008 to 59,768 as of now. The training department engaged by the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications of the ROC has carried out relevant training courses for mandarin-speaking tour guides, which offers two weeks of professional pre-employment training for a total of 98 hours to teach basic knowledge relating to tour guiding. After receiving certification upon qualifying an oral examination at the end of the course, professional practice may then be conducted. However, it has been found after actual practice that other than introducing travel destinations, other various knowledge and skills are also required to successfully lead a tour group. Therefore, the problem in the lack of training is evident as a result of such competency gap between pre-employment training and beginning actual practice. This study adopts a qualitative approach to interview a total of ten subjects, including the heads of travel agencies in the industry still receiving Chinese tour groups as well as experienced tour guides engaged in the business online. This study attempts to understand the competency gap between pre-employment training offered by the Tourism Bureau and practical demands for tour guides, and solutions are also proposed as reference for relevant units. This study has found that tour guides require other relevant skills in addition to receiving pre-employment training courses on the basic introduction to travel destinations and the culture and customs in Taiwan: 1.Including outdoor training courses in addition to indoor lectures mainly to simulate actual practice. Trainees can also conduct study groups to interact and learn from each other. 2.Inviting practicing tour guides or tour guides engaged in the business online to give lectures, allowing for the students to gain practical experience. 3.Sales involved in tour guiding is inevitable, appropriate inclusion of training courses to sales in tour guiding may create four-win situations (customer satisfaction, tour guide earning, company profit, increase in national tourism output value). 4.Tour guiding is a business of providing service to people, problems will arise as long as there is human interaction, therefore, improving the tour guides’ EQ and for them to learn to deal with different unexpected events will facilitate completing the whole itinerary successfully. 5.In order to provide comprehensive services to tourists visiting Taiwan and improving tourist satisfaction levels, tour guides should build and cultivate professional skills with a healthy attitude, seek the right experienced mentor to act as guidance, as well as learning and progressing at all times.

The natural environment represents the main resource for many tourism destinations and tourists are increasingly interested in spending their vacation in unpolluted natural area. Consequently, resource conservation is under increased pressure to implement ecologically sustainable practices. Tourist activities impact directly and indirectly on ecosystems. There are facts include Environmental degradation and weak incentives for value-added investment. Tour guide plays an important role to mediate the contact between the tourist and the environment. Various advantages and disadvantages are associated with tour guides as conduits of persuasive interpretation. More than 400 face-to-face questionnaires were released to tour guides over 18 years old. 248 out of the 400 face-to-face questionnaires were effectively collected with a successful rate of 62%. With the other 120 internet questionnaires added, the total number of acceptable questionnaires was then 328. Results from the survey of 328 tour guides indicate that attitude toward the environmental responsibility in the daily lives and the work distinct groups with respect to psychographic, behavioural and socio-demographic personal characteristics. It was also identified that education, professional training and years of work experience. Based on the findings of this study, some of tour guides have positive attitude and emphasize the locus of control about responsibility and the pluralistic value of nature, but others focus more on culture, education, compensation and laws. This reveals a critical situation that although the tour guides’ performance in knowledge and attitude seemed to be positive to the environment, these could not be linked to the actions due to the limitations of reality.

The purpose of this study is to design a conceptually grounded, psychometric sound instrument to measure work stress for the tour guides. To achieve this goal, both rigorous qualitative and quantitative research methods were launched to construct this scale. To build the reliability and the validity of the scale, the data collection of this study was divided into two axes. First of all, the initial dimensions of the work stress for tour guides were excavated based on the historical literature and the semi-structured depth interviews with 10 practicing and practiced tour guides. On the other hand, 2 extra experts were also interviewed for advanced verifying purpose. After the content analysis through the results of the interviews, the pre-test questionnaire was developed. In the quantitative part, 100 samples were collected for implementing the pre-test. The formal questionnaire was built through the dimension purification process using exploratory factor analysis. Afterwards, 203 examples were obtained to establish the stability of this scale by confirmatory factor analysis. Based on the findings of this study, eight dimensions of the work stress of the practicing tour guides were derived as “risk in practicing environment”, “uncertainty of career development”, “working hours loading”, “performance burden from travel agency”, “marketing capabilities of shopping business”, "family support", “relationship with the driver within the task forces,” and “tourists relationship”. In order to ensure the quality of tourism service, this study proposed the tourism authority and travel agents could implement the scale to measure tour guides for adjust the work stress of tour guides, or even make it as an early warning management instrument. In addition, this study also provides important management implications and recommendations for follow-up studies.

The domestic tourism is booming these years in Taiwan. And the tour guide plays the most important role in the successful tour. Meanwhile, the demands of domestic tour guide is significantly increasing. Unfortunally, most of the domestic itineraries and recreational activities on the market are similar, that why the performance and satisfaction of the tour become the main factors for a tourist who decisides whether to come back to join the next journey or not. On the other hand, for a human resource supplier, to provide well- trained and qualified guides to meet the travel agencies’ demands is essential and beneficial to both ends. After reviewing the literature on the subject and interviewing travel agency staff as well as referencing to the interaction between Taiwan Tourism Association and travel agency, we found that how a tour guide could achieve good performance to satisfay tourist’s expectancy is based on his/her character, abilities, personal behavior, working attitude and professional ethic, whereas whether the agency releases demands to Taiwan Tourism Association is depended on if the later could offer well- trained and qualified tour guides to them. The conclusions of the study are as follows: A well- trained and qualified tour guide is required not only play his role appropriately but also needs to do pre-job and close-job correctly and to respond to problem quickly. Thus, it is able to please both tourist and travel agency. The tourist satisfaction includes the performance of tour guide, company brand, itinerary design, hotel and restaurant choices as well as the group control staff’s work. The performance of tour guide will affect tourist’s satisfaction and this is in a positive correlation to the loyalty of travel agency. However there will be variance among different tourists’ characters. The travel agency highlights the professional ethic of tour guide, especially, competing with them privately, disclosing secret or bottom price, false checking out. Low level professional ethic will make the travel agency no trust in him and lose any future employment opportunity. It is recommended that the travel agency admires tour guides’ professionalism, provides them job opportunity and pay them reasonably are ways to get their loyalty. Moreover, considerate logistics and care-free working conditions as well as a friendly couch bus driver are all positive influence factors.
