The larvae of 12 species of Copelatinae, Copelatus alternatus Sharp, 1882, C. caelatipennis princeps Young, 1963, C. glyphicus (Say, 1823), C. japonicus Sharp, 1884, C. masculinus Régimbart, 1899, C. nakamurai Guéorguiev, 1970, C. oblitus Sharp, 1882, C. parallelus Zimmermann, 1920, C. tenebrosus Régimbart, 1880, Exocelina australiae (Clark, 1863), E. ferruginea (Sharp, 1882), and Liopterus haemorrhoidalis (Fabricius, 1787) are described or redescribed, including for the first time a detailed chaetotaxy analysis of the cephalic capsule, head appendages, legs, last abdominal segment and urogomphi. A provisional parsimony analysis based on larval characteristics of 13 copelatine species was conducted using the program TNT, which reinforces the monophyletic origin of the Copelatinae. Copelatinae larvae stand out from the remaining Dytiscidae based on several synapomorphies, including the unusual shorter length of the mesothoracic legs. Legs and urogomphi morphology suggest that Copelatinae larvae studied evolved a creeping way of life. The provisional phylogenetic analysis presented in this study provides some arguments for the validity of the taxonomic status of the genera Liopterus Dejean, 1833 and Exocelina Broun, 1886.

Tijdens zijn eerste dertig levensjaren stonden de Belgische gewesten onder Oostenrijks bestuur. Van 1795 tot 1813 waren zij een onderdeel van de Franse republiek en het Franse keizerrijk. Vanaf 1814 tot 1830 leefde Van Wambeke in het Verenigd Koninkrijk der Nederlanden onder het bewind van Koning Willem I. In het najaar van 1830 maakte Van Wambeke de Belgische revolutie mee om van 1831 tot zijn dood in een onafhankelijk België te leven. Bernard Van Wambeke, geboren te Aalst op 18 augustus 1764 en overleden te Gent op 8 januari 1841, was advocaat, politicus, hypotheekbewaarder in Gent (1796-1799), directeur-generaal van de belastingen, lid van het corps législatif (1803-1807), magistraat en professor. Hij was een notabele van het eerste Franse keizerrijk.

The paper addresses the journal Jahrbücher für speculative Philosophie, published between 1846 and 1848 in Darmstadt. The paper focuses on the forewords of the journal written by the sole editor Ludwig Noack (1819–1885). In these forewords, Noack elaborates the current situation of philosophy. He outlines his vision for the future philosophy. It would be meaningful not only for professional philosophers but also for the general audience. Moreover, it would be closely associated with other sciences. Noack’s vision was inspired by August Cieszkowski’s (1814–1894) so-called “Philosophie der Tat” (the philosophy of action), which resonated with the entire generation of German Hegelians from the late 1830s. Noack realized his journal in co-operation with the “Philosophische Gesellschaft zu Berlin”, founded by Cieszkowski and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s (1770–1831) former student Carl Ludwig Michelet (1801–1893) in 1843.

J.M. Glorie en R.L.M.M. Camps hielden zich bezig met een heel bijzonder facet van de sociale geschiedenis: de kindermoord. Vanaf de Romeinse tijd heeft West-Europa geworsteld met het probleem van het ongewenste kind. Soms bleek een uitweg mogelijk door verlating: het kind werd te vondeling gelegd. Dan weer nam de moeder haar toevlucht tot kindermoord. In de eerste decennia van de negentiende eeuw kwam verlating veel voor. In een beperkt aantal gevallen, die de auteurs nauwkeurig onderzochten, kwam echter ook kindermoord voor. Het waren gewoonlijk schrijnende gevallen.

Fernand Toussaint (Meulebeke 1805 - Elsene 1885), zoon van een Frans emigrant was eerst ambtenaar tijdens het Hollandse regime. In september 1830 vluchtte hij naar Brussel en speelde een niet onbelangrijke rol in de Belgische revolutie. Hij werd lid van de revolutionaire en republikeinse Club, de ‘Réunion Centrale’. Deze Club hield zich intens bezig met de voorbereiding van de nieuwe staatsinstellingen. Toussaint heeft zich tweemaal (in het Frans) in de debatten gemengd, op 15 en op 30 oktober 1830.Zijn republikeinse opvattingen kwamen het duidelijkst tot uiting op 15 oktober, waarbij hij de erfelijke monarchie, de instelling van een Senaat en het koninklijk veto verwerpt.Op 15 oktober verdedigde hij de ‘Vlaamse taal, op een ogenblik dat alle discussies in het Frans verliepen’. Wetten en besluiten dienden volgens hem ook in het Vlaams vertaald te worden. Hij werd daarin gesteund door de Waals-Brabander Lucien Jottrand (1804-1877). Toussaint voerde daarover een perscampagne.Deze materie kwam aan bod tijdens de werkzaamheden van het Nationaal Congres (10 november 1830-21 juli 1831). Op 27 november 1830 werd een amendement door de Oudenaardse vertegenwoordiger, Charles Liedts (1802-1878), goedgekeurd. Het stipuleerde dat alle wetten en besluiten dienden voorzien te zijn van een Vlaamse vertaling, ‘in de gemeenten waar Vlaams gesproken wordt’.In die zin is Toussaint een voorloper van de Gentse groep rond Philip Blommaert (1808-1871), de eerste ‘taalijveraars’ in de Vlaamse beweging.________Jozef Ferdinand Toussaint (1807-1885), zealot of the Flemish language. 15 October 1830Fernand Toussaint (Meulebeke 1805 – Ixelles 1885), son of a French emigrant, was at first a civil servant under the Dutch regime. In September 1830 he fled to Brussels and played a not unimportant role in the Belgian Revolution. He became a member of the revolutionary republican club, La Réunion Centrale. This club was intensely preoccupied with the preparation of the new state institutions. Toussaint took part in these debates twice, on 15 and 30 October 1830.His republican opinions were most evident on 15 October, when he rejected the hereditary monarchy, the institution of the Senate, and the royal veto.On 15 October he defended the “Flemish language, at a moment when all the discussions took place in French”. According to him, laws and decrees should also be translated into Flemish. He was supported in this by Lucien Jottrand (1804-1877) of Walloon Brabant. Toussaint lead a press campaign about this.This matter came up during the proceedings of the National Congress (10 November 1830-21 July 1831). On 27 November 1830, an amendment from the representative from Oudenaarde, Charles Liedts (1802-1878), was approved. It stipulated that all laws and decrees should be provided with a Flemish translation, “in the municipalities where Flemish is spoken”. In this sense, Toussaint is a forerunner of the Ghent group around Philip Blommaert (1808-1871), the first “language zealots” in the Flemish Movement.

Lease of the coastal dunes of the island of Texel from 1855 to 1885 In 1855, the province of North Holland started exploiting the coastal dunes of the island of Texel. The dunes were divided into 19 large plots, each of which was leased for several years. This map from around 1840 served as an official document till 1886 and was regularly updated. It shows the plots and lists of tenants and rents for each lease period. Also interventions such as the construction of ditches and dikes were drawn. The map uniquely shows the Mient (‘commons’), a low and moist dune landscape which was botanically very rich, but which was almost completely drained and forested around 1900. The present dune area of Texel still bears the traces of the lease and the interventions from the 19th century.

Abstract From Humanism to Nazism. The case of Frederik Jzn. Muller (1883-1944) Frederik Jzn. Muller (1883—1944) was professor of Latin at Leiden University from 1921 to 1944 and one of the few prominent Dutch classicists who collaborated with the German occupiers during the Second World War. The driving force behind Muller’s collaboration was not political opportunism or anti-Semitic ideology, but the conviction that only in a ‘Third Reich’ under German leadership could a new era of European culture dawn. With his belief in the close connection between cultural flourishing and state-building, Muller was a rare Dutch exponent of the intellectual movement known as the ‘third’ humanism, of which the German classicist Werner Jaeger (1888-1961) is commonly seen as the most typical representative. However, Frederik Muller’s views, much more so than Jaeger’s, expose the utterly paradoxical relationship between the ‘third’ humanism and the history of National Socialism.

Abstract Abstract 3357 Previously, we identified a role for the lysine residue couple 1967/1968 in the stability of activated factor VIII (FVIIIa). Using tandem mass tags (TMT 126/127) in combination with mass spectrometry, we identified lysine residues involved in the interaction between the A2 domain and the rest of heterodimer (A1/A3-C1-C2) of FVIIIa (Bloem et al., J Biol Chem 2012;287:5575–83). Upon FVIII activation and A2 domain dissociation, the highest increase in surface exposure occurred for the lysine couple 1967/1968, and functional studies confirmed the role thereof in FVIIIa stability. In addition to lysines 1967/1968 also other lysines displayed an increased surface exposure, including those in positions 1804, 1808, 1813 and 1818. The A3 domain region 1803–1818 has previously been implicated in interactions with ligands such as activated factor IX (FIXa). As such, one might expect increased surface exposure due to FVIII activation. On the other hand, A2 domain dissociation may have rearranged the A3 domain surface in this region. The relation between FIXa assembly and A2 domain retention was therefore explored in the present study. To unravel the role of region 1803–1818 in FVIIIa stability and FIXa binding, either region 1803–1810 or 1811–1818 was replaced by the corresponding regions of the homologous factor V. Additionally, as Asn1810 is N-linked glycosylated and this glycan is maintained in both chimeras, a variant that lacks this glycan (N1810C) was investigated. Factor × activation kinetics were used to investigate the apparent FIXa binding affinity of the FVIII variants. FXa generation was assessed on 15% phosphatidyl serine (PS) containing membranes. FIXa titration experiments showed that the affinity for the 1811–1818 variant is reduced (apparent Kd from 1.3 nM to 2.4 nM). Removal of the glycan and substitution of 1803–1810 has little or no effect on the apparent FIXa binding. FVIIIa-FIXa assembly on membranes containing 15% PS was studied using lipid- coated glass beads (lipospheres). Lipospheres were incubated with fluorescein-labeled FIXa and different FVIIIa concentrations. FIXa did only display liposphere binding in the presence of FVIIIa. Therefore, the mean fluorescent intensity on the lipospheres at increasing FVIIIa concentration could be used as a measure for FVIIIa-FIXa assembly on lipids. Results from these experiments showed that the 1811–1818 variant fails to promote FVIIIa-FIXa assembly, whereas the other variants behave like WT. To investigate FVIIIa stability, and thereby the role of the mutations on A2 domain dissociation, the activity of the variants was followed over time. Results showed that the 1811–1818 variant has a decreased half life of 1.5 min, compared to 6.9 min for WT. Also substitution of region 1803–1810 results in a lower half life, although to a lesser extent (2.8 min), whereas the glycan lacking variant behaves like WT (6.8 min). Incubation of FVIIIa variants with FIXa is known to stabilize FVIIIa and leads to an increased half life for all variants. However, the 1803–1810 variant is most efficiently stabilized by FIXa, shown by a 3-fold increase in half life, instead of 1.6-fold as seen for both WT and N1810C. The 1811–1818 variant is stabilized by 2.2-fold and therefore remains significantly less stable than WT. Together these results show that the 1811–1818 region is not only involved in FIXa binding, but additionally plays a major role in A2 domain retention. Region 1803–1810 also plays a role in FVIIIa stability, although to a lesser extent. Remarkably, the glycan at position Asn1810 does not influence neither FIXa binding nor FVIIIa stability, and apparently serves some other function. Koch, 1850 is revised and morphological cladistic analyses carried out including all of its species, as well as most of those of the related genera Vitalius Lucas, Silva & Bertani, 1993, Nhandu Lucas, 1983, Pterinopelma Pocock, 1901, Proshapalopus Mello-Leitão, 1923, Eupalaestrus Pocock, 1901, Lasiocyano Galleti-Lima, Hamilton, Borges & Guadanucci, 2023, Parvicarina Galleti-Lima, Hamilton, Borges & Guadanucci, 2023, and Tekoapora Galleti-Lima, Hamilton, Borges & Guadanucci, 2023. A matrix with 50 terminal taxa, 2 continuous and 48 discrete characters was analyzed with TNT 1.5. The result shows a monophyletic Lasiodora as sister group of Nhandu, and Vitalius is the sister group of this clade. Lasiodora comprises 7 species: Lasiodora klugi (C. L. Koch, 1841) (type species), L. benedeni Bertkau, 1880, L. parahybana Mello-Leitão, 1917, L. subcanens Mello-Leitão, 1921, L. camurujipe n. sp., L. sertaneja n. sp., and L. franciscana n. sp. Lasiodora itabunae Mello-Leitão, 1921 is considered a junior synonym of L. klugi. Lasiodora differens Chamberlin, 1917, L. curtior Chamberlin, 1917, L. mariannae Mello-Leitão, 1921, L. difficilis Mello-Leitão, 1921, L. erythrocythara Mello-Leitão, 1921, and Acanthoscurria cristata Mello-Leitão, 1923 are considered junior synonyms of L. benedeni. Lasiodora acanthognatha Mello-Leitão, 1921 is considered junior synonym of L. parahybana. Lasiodora dulcicola Mello-Leitão, 1921 is considered junior synonym of L. subcanens. Nhandu sylviae Sherwood, Gabriel & Brescovit, 2023 is considered junior synonym of Vitalius sorocabae Mello-Leitão, 1923. The holotype of Crypsidromus isabellinus Ausserer, 1871 (type species of the genus) was reanalyzed and is considered the senior synonym of Proshapalopus anomalus Mello-Leitão, 1923 (type species of the genus). Thus, the genus Crypsidromus Ausserer, 1871 is considered valid, removed from the synonymy with Lasiodora, and Proshapalopus is considered a junior synonym of Crypsidromus. The new combination C. multicuspidatus (Mello-Leitão, 1929) n. comb. is established. Crypsidromus bolivianus Simon, 1892 is considered a junior synonym of Acanthoscurria insubtilis Simon, 1892. Een grote mobilisatie in de roerige eerste jaren van de Belgische Afscheiding (1830-1831) leidde tot een nationale inzamelingsactie voor armlastige Nederlandse militairen en hun achterblijvende gezinsleden. Vrouwen ondernamen allerlei initiatieven op het terrein van liefdadigheid. Vooral het succes en de reikwijdte van verlotingen van handwerken springen daarbij in het oog.

De Vlaamse afdeling van de Belgische Pers-bond kwam in Gent tot stand in 1888. Ze verenigde journalisten van alle politieke strekkingen met uitzondering van Vlaams-nationalistische. De verdediging van enkele specifieke belangen die deels ruimer en deels beperkter dan syndicale belangen waren, bleef het voornaamste bindmiddel. Op het politieke terrein bleef ze strikt neutraal. Onder het Duitse bezettingsregime van 1914-1918 bleef het merendeel van de journalisten actief, ondanks de censuur, wat na de oorlog tot spanningen leidde.________The Flemish Section of the Belgian Press Association and the First World War (1887-1918)The Flemish section of the Belgian Press Association came into being in Ghent in 1888. It united journalists from all political tendencies, expect Flemish nationalist. The defence of a few specific interests that were in some ways broader and in some ways narrower than union interests remained the primary link between members. On the political field, the Flemish section remained strictly neutral. Under the German occupation regime of 1914-1918 the majority of journalists remained active despite censorship, which led to tensions after the war.

Tsunamis from volcanic ‘explosive’ eruptions are rare, with the last catastrophic event being Krakatau in 1883 (Verbeek, 1885), during which, tsunamis were generated in the far-field by pressure shock-waves and in the nearfield of the volcano, in the Sunda Straits, by several potential geological mechanisms including pyroclastic flows, ash column, and/or caldera collapse. On 1/22/55, at about 4:15 UTC, a one in 1,000 year eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’a-pai Volcano (HTHHV), that had started on12/20/21, reached its paroxysm with a series of large underwater explosions, releasing enormous energy (4-18 Mt of TNT), and ejecting a large ash plume 58 km into the stratosphere. We simulate both the near- and far-field tsunami generation from the eruption, but in this paper we focus on analyzing and validating the near-field impact against field data.

De bijdrage van Lode Wils beschrijft de wettelijke regeling van het taalgebruik in het openbaar in het Verenigd Koninkrijk der Nederlanden (1815-1830) en het Koninkrijk België (tot 1900). In tegenstelling tot de dwingende taalregeling sinds 1823, werd in 1830 de vrijheid van taalgebruik ingevoerd voor provincie- en gemeentebesturen, rechters en notarissen. De centrale overheid bevorderde wel het officiële gebruik van het Frans, vooral onder liberale regeringen. Vanaf 1884, onder een katholieke regering, nam het gebruik van het Nederlands toe.Het artikel bevat tevens een kritiek van de sociolinguistische publicaties van Roland Willemyns en zijn team.

In contradiction to the obligatory language regulation that had been in force from 1823, 1830 saw the introduction of freedom of the use of language for provincial and municipal councils, judges and notaries. However, the central authorities did promote the official use of French, in particular during liberal governments. From 1884 during a Catholic government the use of Dutch increased.The article also includes a critical review of the socio-linguistic publications by Roland Willemyns and his team.

In de historiografie werd het aandeel van het Vlaamse socialisme in de Vlaamse beweging lang miskend. Rond 1970 toonde onderzoek aan hoe het Vlaamse socialisme, ondanks een beperkt aantal volksvertegenwoordigers (drie in 1900 ten opzichte van 23 Waalse en 5 Brusselse) de taalwetten verdedigden. Na een frontale botsing met Waalse partijgenoten werd de taalkwestie in de unitaire Belgische Werkliedenpartij (°1885) in 1909 een vrije kwestie. Intussen vorderde het onderzoek. Dat maakte een nieuwe synthese mogelijk. Het opzet werd breder. In een eerste deel werd de partij doorgelicht als vertrekpunt naar communautaire tegenstellingen: een socialistisch reformisme en attentisme, het besluitvormingsproces, de interactie tussen centraal bestuur/federaties/ parlementsfractie, de ongelijkmatige economische ontwikkeling en de politieke vertaling ervan, het interne taalgebruik. Zoals elders vereenzelvigde de BWP zich steeds meer met het nationale vaderland. Brusselse, Vlaamse en Waalse socialisten vulden dit echter anders in.In een tweede deel staan de communautaire spanningen zelf centraal. Aanvankelijk leek het er op dat Vlamingen en Walen als Belgen taalkundig naar elkaar konden groeien. Dat veronderstelde gelijkheid en wederkerigheid. Het streefdoel werd dan ofwel een veralgemeende tweetaligheid ofwel een officiële eentaligheid van beide taalgebieden. Dat gebeurde niet. Na 1900 ging het Vlaamse socialisme tot de voorhoede van de Vlaamse beweging behoren, terwijl het Waalse socialisme de leiding van de Waalse beweging overnam. Dat was een complex proces. Voor de analyse ervan werd vertrokken van de argumenten die de Gentse leider Anseele in 1911 gebruikte om zijn afwachtend standpunt te verduidelijken: de Vlaamse kwestie als hoofd- of bijzaak, de toegenomen sterkte van de Vlaamse beweging, het beginselprogramma van de partij, het gevaar voor de eenheid van het Vlaamse socialisme én voor de eenheid van het Belgische socialisme.Wat alle partijgenoten bond, was een emotionele en rationele identificatie, gericht op de strijd voor politieke gelijkheid via het afdwingen van algemeen enkelvoudig stemrecht. Maar secundair botsten toenemende regionalismen. Het Vlaamse socialisme verscherpte de taalstrijd als aspect van de klassenstrijd tegen de francofone dominantie, die de emancipatie van de arbeiders bemoeilijkte. De eis tot ‘culturele autonomie’ (Otto Bauer!) vond ingang: zelfbeschikking over een Nederlandstalig onderwijs van laag tot hoog. Het Waalse socialisme duldde steeds minder de negatie van het programma door voortdurend aan de macht blijvende katholieke regeringen sinds 1884. Die steunden op Vlaanderen, terwijl in Wallonië een antiklerikale meerderheid van liberalen en socialisten bestond. De superioriteit van het Frans in België in vraag stellen of de kennis van het Nederlands aan Walen opleggen, werd geïnterpreteerd als een bijkomende discriminatie. Desnoods werd met bestuurlijke scheiding gedreigd. Toch werden in de partij mogelijkheden tot een vergelijk gezocht. België bestond uit twee volken met eigen culturele rechten. Breekpunt bleef hoe men wilde omgaan met ‘taalminderheden’ in beide landsgedeelten en hoe men die wilde definiëren.________‘Frenemies’? Communitarian tensions in the Socialist Party until 1914The contribution of Flemish socialism to the Flemish Movement has long been misunderstood in the historiography. Around 1970, research demonstrated how Flemish socialism, despite a limited number of representatives in parliament (three in 1900, in contrast to 23 from Wallonia and 5 from Brussels) defended the language laws. After a major clash with Walloon fellow party members, the language question became a free question within the Belgian Workers’ Party (*1885). In the meantime, the research kept advancing. This made a new synthesis possible. The framework became broader. In the first wave, the party was studied as a point of departure toward communitarian oppositions: a socialist reformism and ‘wait-andsee’ attitude, the decision-making process, the interaction between the central committee, federations, and the parliamentary group, uneven economic development and the political consequences thereof, internal language use. As elsewhere, the BWP identified more and more with the national fath-erland. Brussels, Flemish and Walloon socialists each understood this very differently.In the second wave, the communitarian tensions themselves take center stage. Originally, it seemed that Flemings and Walloons could grow toward one another linguistically as Belgians. This presupposed equality and reciprocity. The goal of struggle became either a general bilingualism or an official monolingualism for both language regions. That did not happen. After 1900, Flemish socialism belonged to the vanguard of the Flemish Movement, while Walloon socialism took over the leadership of the Walloon Movement. This was a complex process. The analysis of it took as a starting point the arguments that the Ghent leader Anseele used in 1911 in order to clarify his ‘wait-and-see’ point of view: the Flemish question as main or side question, the increasing strength of the Flemish Movement, the party manifesto, the concern for the unity of Flemish social-ism and for the unity of Belgian socialism.What bound all party members together was an emotional and rational identification with each other, built on the struggle for political equality through the demand for single universal suffrage. But growing regionalisms clashed under the surface. Flemish socialism increasingly emphasized the language struggle as an aspect of the class struggle against French-speaking domination, which hindered the emancipation of the workers. The demand for ‘cultural autonomy’ (Otto Bauer!) found purchase: self-determination of a Dutch-language education, from top to bottom. Walloon socialism grew more and more impatient of not being able to realise its program, due to the unbroken chain of Catholic governments in power since 1884. These governments found their support in Flanders, while an anticlerical majority of liberals and social-ists existed in Wallonia. Questioning the superiority of French in Belgium, or imposing the knowledge of Dutch on Walloons, was interpreted as another form of discrimination. If necessary there was the threat of administrative separation. Nevertheless, the party still looked for possibilities for compromise. Belgium consisted of two peoples, each with their own cultural rights. The sensitive point remained how one wanted to handle ‘linguistic minorities’ in both parts of the country, and how one wanted to define them.

Voormalig directeur J.M.L.A. de Beaumont heeft aan de hand van herinneringen, die in familiekring nog leefden, een bedrijfsgeschiedenis trachten te reconstrueren. Hoewel hij er uiteraard niet altijd in is geslaagd de omstandigheden, waaronder het bedrijf is gevoerd, te achterhalen - daarvoor lagen vele gebeurtenissen te ver terug in het verleden - heeft de redactie gemeend er toch goed aan te doen zijn studie als inleiding bij de inventaris van het bedrijfsarchief te publiceren. De bijdrage van de heer De Beaumont geeft immers goed aan in hoeverre de voornamelijk administratieve nalatenschap van bedrijven kan worden aangevuld tot een meer volledige historische documentatie omtrent het reilen en zeilen van een onderneming in de voorbije honderd jaar.

Die kende haar eigen, soms bewogen geschiedenis, tot het eind van de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw. In 1929 verkocht de laatste eigenaar ze aan Aimé Meiresonne, die daarmee in tien jaar tijd twee Gentse brouwerijen verwierf.

Opsomming Groen van Prinsterer (1801–1876) se Christelik-historiese beskouing is gekenmerk deur ’n tweeledige waardering vir die Godsopenbaring soos dit neerslag vind in die Skrif aan die een kant en in die geskiedenis aan die ander kant. Gegewe die feit dat sy openbaringsleer beduidend begrond is deur die Gereformeerde belydenisskrifte, beoog hierdie artikel om vir die eerste keer sy beskouing van die rol en aard van algemene openbaring – soos beskryf in artikel 2 van die Nederlandse Geloofsbelydenis – te ondersoek en in verband te bring met sy Christelik-historisme. In navolging van veral die Réveil sowel as die Historische Rechtsschule van Friedrich Carl von Savigny (1779–1861) verwerp hy die idee van ’n normatiewe natuurreg en beskou hy daarteenoor die goddelike openbaring as te vinde in die besondere openbaring van die Bybel, sowel as in die geskiedenis as algemene openbaring. Hierdie historiese algemene openbaring behoort volgens Groen egter beskou te word in die lig van die besondere openbaring, en met name spesifiek die openbaring van Jesus Christus se verlossingswerk en die verheerliking van Sy heerskappy as die oorhoofse doel van die wêreldgeskiedenis. Alhoewel Groen nie die rede of sintuie as middels tot die verkryging van kennis as sodanig verwerp nie, verwerp hy wel die idee dat die mens by wyse van waarnemings of rasionele konstruksies, los van die verligting van die goddelike openbaring, kernwaarhede aangaande die werklikheid kan bekom. The article analyzes the autobiography of Tit Egorovich Tochilov (1881-1939), a resident of Zimniaia Zolotitsa. In 1935, Tochilov was heavily taxed and deprived of the right to vote. He wrote the autobiography in 1939, after he was levied once again. In this text, Tochilov intended to describe his hard life, which was characterized by roaming and continuous work. He sought to make his life story public and to present himself as a hard worker who aligned with the ideology of the new Soviet state. Tit Egorovich Tochilov is known to Russian folklorists as a performer of epic poems (byliny). His autobiography contains descriptions of the socio-cultural practices and ethnographic realities of Zimniaia Zolotitsa. The village of Zimniaia Zolotitsa has an economy that is typical for the Pomor’e region. Throughout his life, Tochilov worked on fishing vessels and participated in the hunt of sea animals and in sea fishing. In our analysis of Tochilov’s autobiographical narrative, we consider an autobiography as a complex verbal construction that is not a reflection but a presentation of a person’s life. Tochilov’s narrative strategy strove to display his work biography. Accordingly, Tochilov talks in detail about his professional activities but relates almost nothing about his personal life. Tochilov’s autobiography is of interest to folklorists and anthropologists because it gives a detailed description of many sociocultural and professional practices of the Pomor’e: the structure and relationships in the male cooperative association (artel’), the organization of the hunt of sea animals and fishing trades, etc. In his narrative, Tochilov regularly refers to the hunting and fishing times for the Winter Coast of the White Sea that are contained in the traditional calendar.

Het begrip economische waarde wordt vaak gebruikt maar ook slecht begrepen. De verwarring met het begrip prijs lijkt vrijwel onuitroeibaar. De subjectivistische (marginalistische) revolutie van 1871 levert een solide fundament voor een consistente waardeleer. In het dagelijks leven valt echter waar te nemen dat de mainstream opvattingen leiden tot een objectivistische benadering van het economisch waardebegrip. Daardoor verdwijnt de essentie en worden onjuiste conclusies getrokken. In dit artikel staat het waardebegrip uit de Oostenrijkse School centraal. Omdat mensen slechts kunnen handelen met het oog op de toekomst kan economische waarde alleen worden bepaald door, ex ante, uit te gaan van de positie en situatie van partijen.

The first agricultural societies in the Cape Colony were established during the first half of the 19th century. Owing to their limited economic objectives, these agricultural societies did not satisfy the expectations of the farming community. Consequently the farmers felt the need to establish farmers' associations which could further both their economic and political aims which they realized were inseparable. As a result farmers' associations were founded within a specific regional context. They can be divided into three categories, namely the Afrikaans-speaking associations in the eastern districts of the Colony, the English-speaking (also in the eastern districts), and those in the predominantly Afrikaans-speaking western areas: These farmers' associations exercised such an influence on economic and political events in the Cape Colony especially during the 1870s and 1880s that their existence cannot be ignored by regional historians.

La seva producció agrària havia estat condicionada històricament per la meteorologia fins que, a partir del final del segle xviii, la xarxa de petits recs documentats des de l’edat mitjana es va ampliar i complementar amb grans canals de regadiu. Les disposicions legals van afavorir aquesta dinàmica, a través de la qual, durant tot el segle xix, gran part de la plana va ser convertida en irrigable gràcies a la construcció de nombrosos canals, entre els quals destaca el de l’Olla i Segalers, els anys 1817 i 1818.

Het Poolse receptieonderzoek naar het werk van de Vlaamse romanschrijver Hendrik Conscience (1812-1883), een van de meest vertaalde schrijvers uit het Nederlands in het Pools, concentreert zich hoofdzakelijk op vertalingen van zijn werk in boekvorm. Over de receptie van Conscience in de Poolse kranten en tijdschriften van de 19e en begin 20e eeuw is er weinig bekend, hoewel dit destijds een wezenlijke factor moest geweest zijn in de processen van verbreiding en assimilatie van zijn werk in de Poolse cultuur. Alleen al daarom kan de huidige kennis van de receptie van deze auteur als onvolledig beschouwd worden. Dit artikel presenteert de eerste deelresultaten van het onderzoek naar de receptie van Conscience in de Poolstalige pers tot 1918. Het verschaft basisinformatie over de historische en culturele context van die tijd en karakteriseert (zowel kwantitatief als kwalitatief) het voorlopige corpus van teksten. De meeste aandacht wordt gericht op tot nu toe onbekende vertalingen van twee verhalen van Conscience: Rikke-tikke-tak (1846) en Blinde Rosa (1847) die in 1856 als feuilleton zijn verschenen in het tijdschrift Rozmaitości (uitgegeven in Lviv). Dit zijn hoogstwaarschijnlijk ook de vroegste vertalingen van Conscience in het Pools, niet uit het origineel, maar via de Franse tussenvertaling van Wocquier (1854).

Het afdwingen van het recht op onderwijs in eigen taal behoorde tot de kernstrategie van de Vlaamse beweging: de erkenning van het leervak Nederlands op gelijke voet met het Frans in het secundair onderwijs en daarnaast de vernederlandsing van een paar vakken met perspectief op uitbreiding en zo de stap naar de hervorming van het universitair onderwijs. De taalwet van 1883, beperkt tot het door de staat ingericht onderwijs, kwam daaraan in essentie tegemoet, zij het via een moeizame toepassing. In het sterkere vrij katholiek onderwijs bestond geen algemene regeling. Vooral de Jezuïeten en de Jozefieten, die ook de slechtste reputatie hadden, zouden zich verzetten. Daarop begonnen ook de katholieke flaminganten steeds meer op een verplichting bij wet te rekenen en vandaar ook het wetsvoorstel-Coremans in 1901. Toen Mgr. Mercier in 1906 kardinaal werd, slaagde hij erin alle bisschoppen en reguliere orden achter de “Bisschoppelijke Onderrichtingen” van september te krijgen. Hoewel deze verbeteringen inhielden, waren ze vanuit principieel oogpunt slechter dan de taalwet van 1883: tweetalig lager onderwijs, geen vernederlandsing van vakken in het secundair onderwijs en de principiële afkeuring van het Nederlands als voertaal voor het universitair onderwijs. Het leidde tot een vertrouwensbreuk met het grootste deel van de katholieke Vlaamse beweging. Het is de verdienste van Lieve Gevers dat zij, nu ook voor de periode 1900-1906, de kerkelijke archieven terzake grondig heeft onderzocht en via een uitstekend geannoteerde bronnenpublicatie een zeer goed zicht op het besluitvormingsproces mogelijk maakt.
________25 Years of struggle for a partial Dutchification of Catholic Secondary education. Jesuits and bishops against Catholic supporters of the Flemish Movement. More insights due to a new publication of sources (1900-1906)The enforcement of the right to education in one’s own language was part of the core strategy of the Flemish Movement: the recognition of Dutch as a study subject in secondary education at the same level as French, as well as the Dutchification of some subjects with a view to expansion and thereby the transition to the reform of university education. The linguistic law of 1883, limited to education provided by the state, was essentially a concession towards this goal, although its application proved to be difficult. There was no general rule for the stronger free Catholic education. Particularly the Jesuits and the Josephites, who also had the worst reputation, were to resist the change. In reaction the Catholic supporters of the Flemish Movement started to count increasingly on a legal obligation, which resulted in the Coremans bill in 1901. When Mgr Mercier was elevated to cardinal in 1906, he succeeded in uniting all bishops and regular orders behind the Episcopal Instructions of September. Although these included improvements, they were in principle worse than the linguistic law of 1883: bilingual primary education, no Dutchification of study subjects in secondary education, and in principle the rejection of Dutch as the spoken language for university education. It caused a breach of trust with the largest part of the Catholic Flemish Movement. It is the merit of Lieve Gevers that she has provided an excellent insight in the decision making process after an in-depth study of the subject in the ecclesiastical archives, now also for the period of 1900-1906, and by means of an excellent annotated publication of sources.

We describe for the first time the instar III larva of the diving beetle genus Hovahydrus Biström, 1982, based on H. praetextus (Guignot, 1951) and a new species yet to be described (identified here as Hovahydrus sp. near H. minutissimus (Régimbart, 1903)). We include detailed morphometric and chaetotaxic analyses of the cephalic capsule, head appendages, legs, last abdominal segment and urogomphi in order to discover useful characters for distinguishing Hovahydrus larvae from those of other known Hyphydrini (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae, Hydroporinae). A provisional parsimony analysis based on larval characteristics of 11 Hyphydrini species in eight genera was conducted using the program TNT. Larval morphology supports a close relationship between Hovahydrus, Hyphydrus Illiger, 1802, and the endemic South Africa genera Andex Sharp, 1882, Coelhydrus Sharp, 1882, Darwinhydrus Sharp, 1882 and Primospes Sharp, 1882.

Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) presenting to the emergency department (ED) often have elevated cardiac troponin T (TnT) levels without evidence of type 1 myocardial infarction. We sought to explore the causes and significance of minor TnT elevations in patients with AF at the ED. All patients with AF admitted to the ED of Turku University Hospital between 1 March, 2013 and 11 April, 2016, and at least two TnT measurements, were screened. Overall, 2911 patients with a maximum TnT of 100 ng/L during hospitalization were analyzed. TnT was between 15 and 100 ng/L in 2116 patients. The most common primary discharge diagnoses in this group were AF (18.1%), infection (18.3%), ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack (10.7%), and heart failure (5.0%). Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) was equally uncommon both in patients with normal TnT and elevated TnT (4.4% vs. 4.5%). Age ≥75 years, low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), high C-reactive protein (CRP), and hemoglobin <10.0 g/dL, were the most important predictors of elevated TnT. Importantly, TnT elevation was a very frequent (>93%) finding in elderly (≥75 years) AF patients with either low eGFR or high CRP. In conclusion, minor TnT elevations carry limited diagnostic value in elderly AF patients with comorbidities.

Although the trek farmers were always on the move, a number of them were permanently settled in the present Oudtshoorn district by the end of the eighteenth century, the agricultural industry they founded promoting greater stability and a growing population. The traditional subsistence economy was converted into a market economy through the transport riding that sprang up between the Oudtshoorn district and the eastern and northern boundary districts. From 1811, when the magisterial district of George was established, and 1812 when a congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church took root there, the need for local administration and church authority increased. The first significant development in that direction was the erection in 1838 of the first church on Hartebeesrivier, a farm on the Grobbelaars River. This eventually became the centripetal force which led at the end of 1847 to the establishment of the town of Oudtshoorn on the farm Hartebeesrivier.

Hierdie artikel ondersoek die reeks kleiner “goudstormlope” wat gedurende die middel 1880’s plaasgevind het tot net na die Eerste Wêreldoorlog in KwaZulu-Natal – histories bekend as Zululand. Goudprospektering was veral aangespoor deur die £1 000 beloning aangebied deur die koloniale regering van Natal aan enige delwer wat ‘n betekenisvolle goudrif in hierdie geweste sou ontdek. Alhoewel betreklike ryk ertsneerslae van gouddraende riwwe dikwels ontdek is, en wat gevolglik tot stormlope na vergeleë areas in hierdie gebied aanleiding gegee het, het almal op die lange duur min opgelewer. Die eenvoudige verklaring daarvoor was dat die Goudrif net in ertsneste of -holtes voorgekom het en dus nie aaneenlopend was nie. Die bergagtige aard van die terrein met sy diep valleie was grotendeels die vernaamste rede die gebroke goudriflyn. Twee fases van goudmynbedrywighede is geïdentifiseer. Uiteindelik sou dit blyk dat die meeste van die goudmynmaatskappye in Zululand ‘n beperkte groei gehandhaaf het as kleinerige myne met ‘n gesukkel om ‘n bestaan te maak. Bedrywighede is beeïndig. Die uitsondering was ‘n kleinerige aanleg in die Pongolovallei wat die Wonderfonteinriwwe bewerk het. Na die Tweede Wêreldoorlog was daar net sporadiese pogings om bestaande goudriwwe te myn aangesien daar geen nuwes ontdek was nie. In hierdie artikel word die begin- en ontwikkelingsfase van die hoofgoudstormlope in Zululand ondersoek. Die lengte van elk se lewenssiklus sowel as die gesukkel om die “ertsneste” te vind en ‘n befondsing vir dié bedryf se velerlei uitdagings, word bespreek.

The Bremen Gymnasium Illustre was a driving force in the Reformed confessionalisation process in Europe. Between 1610 and 1810 the Academy counted 7,680 students and 201 professors. In this quantitative-prosopographic description of the Gymnasium’s corps of theology professors, geographical origins, education, careers, social class, payment, and matrimonial affiliations are compared with those of professors of the other Bremen faculties, and of the university of Franeker (1585‐1811). The Bremen group proves more excellent and less given to travel, but also less internationally oriented and affluent than their Franeker colleagues. Elites were in fact formed, but only partly through migration.

The contemporary custom in South Africa of conferring the honorary citizenship of a municipality on an individual originated in England and not, as at times argued, with the Romans. During the Middle Ages the so-called freemen were the only persons in England who enjoyed the full privileges of local management areas (boroughs). The word "freeman" did, however, as a result of legislation passed in the 19th century, lose its original meaning and much of its prestige value. Consequently a new title was created in 1885 to give to prominent people, namely "honorary freeman" (in Afrikaans known as "ereburgerskap"). In South Africa honorary freeman is an honour which has been granted since the second half of the 20th century by the council of a municipality to persons who in their opinion are worthy of it. There are no financial benefits attached to it for the recipient. In the Cape and Natal honorary citizenships are granted by ordinances in which honorary citizenship is specifically described. There are no ordinances of this kind in the Free State and Transvaal; there it is done in accordance with the authority vested in municipal councils. The tradition of granting freedom of entry into towns and cities to military units originated in London, England. It is a symbolic gesture by the civilian population to indicate their faith in a specific military unit.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the reuse of an intravaginal progesterone (P4) device during diestrus of Nelore cow embryo recipients in order to improve conception rate, accelerate estrus cycle re-synchronization of non-pregnant animals, and reduce the amount of waste generated by animal breeding biotechnologies. Two experiments were performed using 268 multiparous Nelore cows. In experiment 1, all animals were subjected to a timed embryo transfer (TET) procedure, but at the time of embryo transfer, two treatment groups were established: T1 - the control treatment (N = 132) and T2 - animals receiving a second-use CIDR® device for 12 days (N = 136). Experiment 2 was performed on cows that had not remained pregnant after experiment 1 using two groups: G1 - a control group (N = 69) and G2 -re-synchronized cows that received a P4 device for 12 days for the first TET (N = 74). In experiment 1, no significant effect of the P4 treatment was observed on conception rate (T1 = 37.9%, T2 = 39.7%; P = 0.50) and corpus luteum (CL) diameter (T1 = 17.5 ± 3.4 mm, T2 = 18.1 ± 3.4 mm; P = 0.61). In experiment 2, no significant effect of the treatment was observed on conception rate (G1 = 22.2%, G2 = 35.7%; P = 0.24), recipients utilization rate (G1 = 75.4%, G2 = 70.3%; P = 0.86), and CL diameter (G1 = 17.4 ± 3 mm, G2 = 18.1 ± 3.2 mm; P = 0.27). However, the P4 treatment (for re-synchronization) significantly increased the conception rate (G1 = 22.2%, G2 = 35.7%; P = 0.04), which was similar to that in a conventional TET protocol performed with a new device (38.8%). We conclude that reusable intravaginal P4 devices can help accelerate TET protocols, suggesting an alternative application method; furthermore, this protocol may help reduce waste production in assisted animal breeding.
