Abstract:
Isabella Bird’s best-selling book on Japan is republished here, but with a difference: for the first time, it is now fully annotated with supporting commentaries, providing the twenty-first century reader with an enhanced informed view of the new ‘modern Japan’ as Bird experienced it in 1878. Originally published as a two-volume work in 1880, this later abridged version, first published in 1885 and promoted as ‘a tale of travel and adventure’, became one of the best-selling travel books published by John Murray; it was reprinted numerous times and by different publishers. This volume is the original 1885 edition. It is not a facsimile, but has been reprocessed digitally to enable the annotations to be inserted, as well as the 40 copperplate illustrations to be restored to their original quality. The commentaries and notes have been written by Kiyonori Kanasaka, Japan’s leading expert on Isabella Bird who, over the past nearly 30 years, has retraced Isabella Bird’s footsteps in all the parts of the world she visited, and knows her travels in Japan intimately. (See Isabella Bird and Japan: A Reassessment>, Renaissance Books 2017.) This book will be essential reading for all those interested in the Bird legacy, the birth of modern Japan, travel writings of the Far East, the topography of Japan and Japan’s social and political history.

Abstract:
To understand Scotland’s population histories it is frequently necessary to explore what was happening below Regional level. A database of Scottish civil parish populations from 1755 to 2001 is used to explore changes in population density and growth over time. Maps show density in 1801 and in 2001, decade population peaked in each parish, and growth from 1801 to 1851, 1851 to 1891, 1891 to 1951, and 1951 to 2000. Attention is drawn to some of the principal causes of change, including modifications to agrarian systems, fishing, new and declining industries, mining, on commuting to nearby major urban centres and oil-related development.

Abstract:
This chapter describes events in the life of Anna Howard Shaw from 1881 to 1889. Over the course of the 1880s Shaw willingly gave up the comfortable but limited life of a small town minister to dedicate herself to changing the inequalities of the social structure in ways that she believed would better women's lives more than any work she could do as a minister. Fortunately for Shaw, she turned out to have many of the talents, skills, and attributes that the leaders and the constituencies of the woman suffrage and women's temperance movements needed and valued. By 1888, Shaw would state that, “I have registered a vow that I will from this time forth never work for any political party, never give one dollar to any religious body, home or foreign, never listen Sunday after Sunday to the preaching of any man, never give one ounce of my strength of body or purse, or mind, or heart to any cause which opposes the best interest of women. ” Fortunately, Shaw achieved the independence to make those decisions.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Octave Chanute's growing interest in wood preservation. In 1880, the Department of Forestry statistics forecast that the nation's supply of white pine would be exhausted in eleven years and hardwood within twenty-five. Chanute was arguably the first American to show his concern for preserving natural resources; he demonstrated the commercial feasibility of preserving wood to slow deforestation. Gradually, railroaders recognized the need to make timber last as long as possible and they realized that increasing the life of ties decreased the cost of track repair. Chanute and his partner Joseph Card designed and erected the first large-scale American commercial wood preservation works for the Santa Fe in Las Vegas, New Mexico, in 1885; for the Union Pacific in Laramie, Wyoming, in July 1886; and for the Rock Island and other customers in Chicago in May 1886. These were the first and only works treating ties on a large scale until other American railroads followed more than a decade later.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Cohen’s Jewish writings in the 1880s, a crucial decade for him because it marks the beginning of his struggle with antisemitism. Cohen defends a communitarian doctrine against the liberalism of Kant, Mendelssohn, and Lazarus; his doctrine stresses the value of social unity above that of individual liberty. Cohen envisages a fusion of Judaism and Christianity to ensure this unity. He stresses the great value of religion and race to maintain and ensure unity, a doctrine which he will later abandon. A final section deals with Cohen’s stance in the Fenner trial, when Cohen was asked to serve as an advisor. This was one of the first trials to try someone for defamation of a public religion.

Abstract:
This chapter recounts how Boltzmann reacted to Hermann Helmholtz’s analogy between thermodynamic systems and a special kind of mechanical system (the “monocyclic systems”) by grouping all attempts to relate thermodynamics to mechanics, including the kinetic-molecular analogy, into a family of partial analogies all derivable from what we would now call a microcanonical ensemble. At that time, Boltzmann regarded ensemble-based statistical mechanics as the royal road to the laws of thermal equilibrium (as we now do). In the same period, he returned to the Boltzmann equation and the H theorem in reply to Peter Guthrie Tait’s attack on the equipartition theorem. He also made a non-technical survey of the second law of thermodynamics seen as a law of probability increase.

Abstract:
This chapter describes events in the life of Anna Howard Shaw from 1871 to 1880. Shaw had a vision that God had called her to a larger life. However, with no independent means of wealth, her choices appeared to be limited to marrying or resigning herself to struggle along as an impoverished schoolteacher, living in her parents' home. To gain access to any formal education for herself, she would have to leave that home. At this point Anna turned to the only resource she did have beyond her own dreams, ingenuity, and determination—her sister Mary, who had married a successful entrepreneur. So it was that Anna made the difficult and seemingly selfish decision to leave her parents' home and move in with her sister to seek her options in the small town of Big Rapids, Michigan. On August 26, 1873, the Big Rapids District Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church enthusiastically licensed twenty-six-year-old “Annie Howard Shaw” as a local preacher. In June 1878 Shaw sailed for Europe. By then she had earned her education and possessed her first investments. This thirty-one-year-old daughter of impoverished immigrants returned to tour the great sights of the continent.

Cortazzi, Hugh. Georges Bigot and Japan 1882-1889. Edited by Christian Polak. Amsterdam University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/9781898823766.

Full text
Abstract:
Incorporating over 250 illustrations, this is the first comprehensive study in English of French artist and caricaturist George Ferdinand Bigot (1860-1927) who, during the last two decades of the nineteenth century, was renowned in Japan but barely known in his own country. Even today, examples of his cartoons appear in Japanese school textbooks. Inspired by what he saw of Japanese culture and way of life at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878, Bigot managed to find his way to Japan in 1882 and immediately set about developing his career as an artist working in pen and ink, watercolours and oils. He also quickly exploited his talent as a highly skilled sketch artist and cartoonist. His output was prodigious and included regular commissions from The Graphic and various Japanese as well as French journals. He left Japan in 1899, never to return. The volume includes a full introduction of the life, work and artistry of Bigot by Christian Polak, together with an essay by Hugh Cortazzi on Charles Wirgman, publisher of Japan Punch. Wirgman was Bigot’s ‘predecessor’ and friend (he launched his own satirical magazine in 1887, the year Japan Punch closed).

Georges Bigot and Japan also makes a valuable contribution to Meiji studies and the history of both Franco- and Anglo-Japanese relations, as well as the role of art in modern international relations.
